75 Years of Service Celebrated by Crickettes

By Sharon Casey When you hear the word “cricket,” most folks think of a noisy little insect that chirps just as you close your eyes to sleep; or a game played with a ball.

If you are from Bartow, you think of the parade and carnival held near Halloween.

More than 75 years ago, a group of Bartow women shared the same vision – to bring together a service club for the betterment of the growing Bartow community, where they lived, worked and were raising their families. They wanted their own club – one where they could make their own rules and bylaws.

These ladies recruited 25 charter members and adopted a slate of service projects to give their club meaning and purpose.

The Crickette Club of Bartow held its first meeting on February 5, 1941. Isobel Miles, the county’s budget director and a driving force in the Club’s creation, became the first President.

They chose the name “Crickette,” as it means, “fair play.” The individual letters represent: Community Respect, Integrity, Caring, Kinship, Excellence, Timeless, Teamwork, and Enthusiasm.

As World War II raged, the Club aided the American Red Cross and the war effort. Members raised money through Defense and War Bonds, helping the community of Bartow reach 202 percent of the total bond quota.

Bartow’s Bloomin’ Arts Festival Committee, the George W. Harris Jr. Youth Runaway and Crisis Shelter, Senior Orphans, the Bartow Church Service Center, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Villa Classic Golf Tournament and the community’s Fourth of July Committee.

The Crickette Club Carnival, held annually since 1942, is the group’s primary fundraiser. The Carnival began as a way to avoid the usual mischief and pranks that can take place at Halloween.

The Carnival was such a success that then City Manager, C. R. Odom, asked the Club to continue it each year.

During seven decades, this Club has evolved into a dynamic and dedicated group of 68 business/professional woman; including bank executives, educators, attorneys and business owners, all who are committed to enhancing the community through hard work and dedication. They are a very close-knit group of women of all ages, who still share the same vision as those who came before them 75 years ago.

The Club added the Parade in 1950, which quickly became another Bartow tradition. The Parade and Carnival evolved over the years to become a top-notch event. It takes all of the Crickette Club members to put the Parade and Carnival together.

They work hard all year to be sure that the event is fun for children and children of all ages. It’s a great time for everyone in the family.

The Club learned that Bartow’s lone Girls Scout Troop didn’t have a place to meet. So, in 1944, the members initiated a fouryear project to raise $8,000 for the construction of a Girl Scout house. The cornerstone was laid on September 4, 1948, on the 3,500 square foot building on north Wilson Avenue, which would become the home for local Girl Scouts. The building was funded through contributions from Bartow citizens, the Girl Scout Council and the Crickette Club. The land was generously donated by the E.C. Stuart Family. The building was dedicated on May 8, 1949. Hundreds of young girls have passed through its portals since then, and the Crickette Club’s commitment to their success has remained strong.

The Club next built Camp Crickette (for the Scouts) at Bartow’s Mary Holland Park; and Club members continue to support Girl Scout programs through proceeds from the Parade and Carnival; and through an annual yard sale held at the Girl Scout House in early August.

The Crickette Club has supported many community projects and activities in Bartow; including the construction of Fort Blount Park, Summerlin Park at Wilson Lake, the Bartow High School Stadium renovations, the Bartow Volunteer Firefighters’ Statue, and Arts in Fort Blount Park. In addition, Club members donate their time and talents to many organizations including

The Crickette Club meets every Monday at noon, where they learn more about the community through presentations from guest speakers on various topics. The group also holds social events throughout the year, when they celebrate birthdays and holidays, or just meet to have fun. Several of them have been in the club for more than 40 years. As women retire out of the workforce, they continue to keep their memberships in the Club, because of all the many friendship they have made.

In honor of the Crickette Club’s 75th Anniversary, it has embarked on a year-long celebration that has included a reception at the Polk County History Center for members and special guests, as well as hosting the Bartow Chamber Fun Thursday at the Girl Scout House.

The Club will showcase the Crickette Carnival at Main Street’s Friday Fest in September and October by providing fun Cake Walks at the events. The Cake Walk at the Carnival is a Bartow tradition that has become one of the community’s favorites. When you win a Crickette Club cake, it’s not just an ordinary cake.

The Crickette Club celebration continues on with a Sponsorship Program in which the community can help the Crickette Club celebrate 75 years of service and supporting local Girls Scouts by helping leave a legacy through an endowed scholarship with the Polk Education Foundation. Sponsors will be acknowledged at various events, including the Crickette Club Carnival being held on October 27, 2016.

Three Times the Charm . . .

Dancing Under The Stars Returns!

Dancing Under The Stars returns for the third consecutive year and returns to its autumn setting.

Started three years ago as a fundraiser for the Bartow Kiwanis Club, last year’s event for the first time teamed up with the Bartow Area Chamber Foundation.

This year, Dancing Under The Stars will take place from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday, September 16 at the Bartow Civic Center, 2250 S. Floral Ave., Bartow. Tickets are $50 per person, which includes an upscale catered dinner, social dancing; and a showcase of ballroom dance performances by two pairs of ballroom Dancesport Champions.

Charge Your Car at Dunkin’ Donuts Dunkin’ Donuts in Bartow is now a member of the network of BTCpower EV Chargers for electric cars.

This will allow drivers to charge their electric cars in the time it takes to eat lunch or dinner at Dunkin’ Donuts.

The electric vehicle charger is a 208V or 480V 3-phase charger that will charge a car quickly – in 30 minutes or less. It delivers 35 times more energy than a standard 120V outlet. It charges any car that accepts a DC direct charge to the onboard battery.

The connectors are CHAdeMO and SAE combo plug (if enabled). CHAdeMO chargers are typically used for Asian auto makers such as KIA, Nissan and Mitsubishi, whereas SAE Combo can charge European and US fast-charge capable vehicles. Charging can be paid for via credit card or NRG rfid payment card.

The scenic Tour de Tow cycling road tour will be on Saturday, September 17, 2016. This little slice of cycling heaven is an on-road tour taking cyclists along the scenic back roads of southern Polk County. With cool rest stops, including a boardwalk on the tranquil Peace River and a working barn filled with eclectic memorabilia, you can choose from a Family Fun Ride of 16 miles for $20.00, 37-mile Tow Tour for $30.00, and a 65-mile Tow Tour, $35.00. And, tandem riders are welcome, just $15.00 for the extra rider. Bartow’s Destination Treasure:

The Polk County History Center

Venture to Bartow and allow the Polk County History Center to indulge your curiosity. Housed within the Historic 1908 Polk County Courthouse on the corner of Main Street and Broadway Avenue, the Polk County History Center is recognized as the largest artifact on display.

The Historic 1908 Courthouse served the citizens of Polk County from 1908-1987. In 1998 the building was granted a new commission as the Polk County History Center and Historical and Genealogical Library.

Having been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, the courthouse is an exemplary representation of the neoclassical architectural style that flourished from 1890 into the early 20th Century.

This particular style is recognized through the use of tall columns, symmetrical fixtures, triangular pediments and accentuated domes.

Through careful preservation the building has been frozen in time and longtime residents consistently reflect on fond memories on their own experiences traversing the courthouse halls.

The Collections - with eleven permanent and four temporary galleries, the Polk County History Center offers a diverse collection with abundant opportunities for discovery. Anchoring the first floor are seven permanent galleries that explore the people, places and events that have made lasting impact on Polk County. From pioneers to industrialists and countless veterans each display illustrates a treasured and unique heritage.

Two adjoining galleries provide a distinct kid friendly experience.

Take time to play and dress up as pioneers, produce a puppet show, and explore replicas of a Seminole Chickee and pioneer cracker home.

A special fossil exhibit features teeth from a giant megalodon shark, the leg bones of a mastodon and skulls from a giant American crocodile, and sabre tooth cat. A recurring family day program is offered on the second

Saturday of each month and includes an activity and storytelling session.

The second floor of the Polk County History Center features the fully restored 1908 Courtroom, the 1926 Courtroom, and two additional permanent exhibits that explore Polk’s military history and the Paleo Indian’s who inhabited the region over 1,500 years ago. The vaulted ceilings and spacious viewing gallery reveal the prominence of the 1908 courtroom and reflect the public nature of the judicial process. Artifacts on display include an original judge’s bench, a thirteen person jury box and the bar that separated members of the court from the viewing gallery.

The 1926 courtroom has been transformed to serve as the presentation space for an active programming schedule that includes a monthly “Lunch & Learn” lecture series. “Lunch & Learn” is hosted on the third Tuesday of each month from 12:15 pm to 1:00 pm, bring a lunch and sit in on a lecture from a variety of topics.
