Bartow with art at annual festival Bartow is where our history comes to life . . . and art. Each year dozens of community volunteers transform Downtown Bartow into a bustling center of compact, street-side art galleries called the Bloomin’ Arts Festival. This is the 45th year for the two-day festival, which also offers quilt, garden and car shows, a bike ride, live entertainment and lots of food, including area food trucks. After being one of the major sponsors of the Bloomin Arts Festival for more than 20 years, the law firm of Frost Van den Boom, P.A. is now its presenter. The Bloomin’ Arts Committee, supported by businesses, community groups and lots of volunteers, plans the event each year. Michell Githens is co-chairman again this year, and is joined by cochairman Lara Frederickson. The event is hosted by the Bartow Art Guild, City of Bartow, Greater Bartow Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Bartow, Inc. Bloomin’ Arts 2016 takes place Saturday and Sunday, March 5 and 6, along several blocks from Broadway to Florida Avenue, and from Davidson Street to Summerlin. Festival hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday. The Flower Show runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Sunday in the Main Street Bartow office at the corner of South Central Avenue and Summerlin Street. The Quilt Show is also indoors, in the Polk County History Center housed in the Historic Courthouse, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Bloomin’ Arts Festival Quilt Show presented by CenterState Bank is a non-juried show, displaying new quilts and family heirlooms. One talented quilter will receive the People’s Choice Award for their entry in the show. Classic cars and trucks along Broadway are a different kind of art. Colorful and shiny, they draw lots of attention. This year’s show is sponsored by Kelley Buick GMC, will be on Saturday, and entrants will have the chance to win plenty of trophies. More than 100 artists are expected to show sculpture, pottery,

photography, paintings, woodwork, glass and other arts. A number of awards and cash prizes are presented. Polk County students from elementary through high school also show their artwork. One school will win the Best Display Award of $100 with a ribbon to be awarded to the art teacher. High schools and colleges have been invited to compete for monetary awards of $1,140. Children will also find an art tent, sponsored by Mosaic, where they can be creative, have their faces painted, and get temporary tattoos. An RV Show will be presented by Camping World, the nation’s largest RV and outdoor retailer. The show is on Sunday, March 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A variety of live entertainment will be presented on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sunday there is a free concert by Brian Sutherland Band, courtesy of Carla J. 3:00 p.m., which will take place at Centennial Park on Davidson Street. Cyclists will be at Fort Blount Park for the 7:00 a.m. Bloomin’ Bike Ride registration and breakfast on Saturday. Line-up and drawing for the Artistic Motion Award is at 7:50 at Fort Blount Park. Riders in the 37- and 65-mile Tow Tours line up at 8:00 a.m., while the 16-mile Family Fun Ride starts at 8:15 a.m. A part of the proceeds for the rides go for providing new bikes for kids who can’t afford one. The Power Pedalers program has given more than 100 bikes to kids. St. Pat’s Unparade

is a longstanding untradition From its modest beginnings, now lost in the mists of time, Bartow’s St. Patrick’s Day Unparade has grown (de-evolved?) into a legendary fiesta attended by dozens of people who are Irish, or belly dancers, for a day. Rarely held on St. Patrick’s Day, this year is no exception. Combined with Main Street Bartow’s Friday Fest, the extravaganza is on March 18. The untraditional Unparade is growing, and the large gaps between parade watchers are getting smaller. The ever-popular and beautiful Citrus Cinderellas – the queens of the parade, will be reigning; the Mutt Strutt, (which replaced the dyed-green pig banned by a well known animal rights organization) will be strutting; and the small “fries” wannabe Citrus Cinderellas, the “Big Arsh Potater Queens,” whose motto is: “I think, therefore I Yam,” will have a float driven by the Spudly Prince of Tuberville. Some say Bartow’s King Commentater, S.L. Frisbie, will sit upon his throne aboard the spudly The “Liege of the Potater Queens” and one of the float, and it can be noted that many along the parade route not only recognize him as the Liege first organizers of the Unparade, S. L. Frisbie, IV. of the Potater Queens, but also of the entire Unparade itself. It was S.L. and a handful of other civic-minded Bartowans who began the Unparade those many years ago. Anyone who wants to be in the Unparade should be appropriately attired in shades of green or other Irish colors, and be somewhat wacky. Speaking of wacky, the St. Patrick’s Day Unparade usually features belly dancers, who also perform at Friday Fest. And a large number of shamrock-festooned golfcarts and bicycles have joined the festivities. The Uparade starts around 5:30 p.m.-ish at Nye Jordan Park, meanders up South Oak Avenue to Main Street, and heads east to Friday Fest on Central and Main. After the Unparade, stick around for all kinds of Irish delights – green beverages, music and dancing in the street, plus the Irish car show and kids activities. Mayor’s Prayer Goes

Back to Traditional Breakfast

When the Mayor’s Sunrise Prayer Breakfast was first conceived, it was agreed it would be a time of early morning prayer to begin the day. Somewhere along the line, the event became a luncheon. This year, for the first time in a long time, the time of prayer is switched back to the traditional early morning event. City of Bartow Mayor A.J. Jackson cordially invites you to the 31st Annual Mayor’s Sunrise Prayer Breakfast, on Thursday, March 24, 2016, at the Bartow Civic Center beginning at 7:00 a.m. Doors open at 6:30 a.m. Guest speaker is Polk County Sheriffs Office Chief Joe Halman, Jr. Outranked only by Chief of Staff Steve Lester and Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, Chief Joe Halman, Jr, as chief of the Department of Law Enforcement, oversees more than 650 sworn officers in five divisions. If civilians are included in that number, Halman is responsible for more than 1000 total personnel. Halman earned his bachelor’s degree from Warner Southern College

in 2003 and received his master’s from Southeastern University in 2008. He joined the Sheriff’s Office in 1985. He had served in the Army National Guard, before being honorably discharged in 1990. Seventh Blarney Tri Coming March 12 The 2016 Blarney Triathlon will put participants to the test in cycling, running and swimming on Saturday, March 12. The sprint triathlon distances in this annual Bartow Parks & Recreation event are a quarter-mile swim, 12-mile bike ride and a 5K run. This is the seventh annual Blarney Tri, sponsored by Mosaic. A race time of 8:30 a.m. is set this year, based on the estimated swim time.
