Local History

Indian Memorial in Barton on Sea

The 10th of July is the anniversary of the unveiling of the Indian memorial at Barton on Sea. We should remember the contribution the (pre 1947 partition) Indian Army made in WW1 and the time that Barton helped sick and injured Indian soldiers to recuperate.

When war was declared in August 1914 the Indian army expeditionry ryy force deployed to Europe. By September 1914 two infantry ryy and two cavalry ryy divisions had arrived in France. They played a vital role in helping to stem the tide of the German advance into Belgium and France. However, their bravery ryy both in defence and attack caused them many casualties in terms of killed, wounded and missing. In addition the Indian soldiers strugg ggled g to cope with the autumn and winter conditions in the front line.

The sick and wounded were brought back to England to a number of hospitals set up along the coast including Brighton Pavilion, the Mont Dore Hotel in Bournemouth (now the town hall) and at Brockenhurst. In Milford and at Bart rton, t hotels were commandeered and used as convalescent homes for the Indians to help their recovery ryy aft fter t their discharge from the main hospitals.

The Indian convalescent depot at Bart rton t consisted of the Bart rton t Court rtt Hotel and the Grand Marine Hotel which was nearly opposite the Beach Comber cafe.

This was a fairly new hotel having opened for business in 1910.

Newspapers of the time report rtt that over 250 guests were turned out of the hotels when the army commandeered them.

It quickly became apparent that the convalescent depot in Bart rton t would need to rapidly expand to take in the ever increasing numbers of recuperating serv rvicemen. v A hutted camp was built on the land that is now occupied by the Cliff fff Crescent building on the junction of Marine Drive and Bart rton t Court rtt Avenue.

A 1917 dated postcard from a British soldier convalescing at Bart rton t gives his address as hut 38 which give us some idea of the size of the camp in addition to the hotel accommodation.

The depot was run by the Indian Medical Serv rvice v under the command of two Indian Army doctors. Lt. Col. J. Chayt ytor-White t was the Commandant of and Lt. Col. W. Mawson his deputy, both of whom had been recalled to serv rvice. v

There were facilities provided to occupy the troops, such as an entert rtainments t hut and it is known that concert rts t were held there for the amusement of all.

Later as the war progressed a monthly magazine entitled ‘Bart rton t Breezes’ was produced within the camp. An art rticle t in the Daily Graphic dated 22nd of January ryy 1915 gives a photographic account of a concert rtt put on for the benefit of the Indian troops.

The art rticle t is entitled: “The West Entert rtains t the East.

Indian Troops at a New Forest Concert rt.” t Clearly this was quite an event for the Indian soldiers and the photographs show the troops filling the theatre and peering in through the windows try rying y to catch the act.

The people of Milton Parish took a great liking to the Indian soldiers. They were invited into people’s homes to have tea. They were photographed frequently and appear to have been treated as celebrities.

One Indian writing home to his family commented that the British people here were quite unlike the British people in India.

These were much friendlier.

The Indian soldiers wrote letters home to their friends and families.

The letters were censored and copied. The copies were held in the Indian Offi ffice fi in London until 1947. When that depart rtment t closed, the letters and other papers were sent to the British Library ryy where they can be read.

In one letter an Indian soldier writing from New Milton says: “Very ryy many people come to see us, and one cannot tell the lord from the begg ggar. g They grind wheat and do every ryt ything t by machinery ry, y and thresh the straw – all by machinery ry. y And they plough with horses. As for the shopkeepers, they are very ryy honest and make no diff fference f in their prices. Whether it be a child or a grown man they ask the same price of every ryone”. y

In 1911 King George V had decreed that members of the Indian Army were now entitled to receive the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry ryy in the face of the enemy. The first award of the Victoria Cross to an Indian Army soldier was given to Sepoy Khudadad Khan for his action in Belgium on 31st of October 1914. He was part rtt of a machine gun team that held their position until overw rwhelmed. w He was left ftt for dead by the German attackers but managed to crawl back to British lines. He came to Bart rton t to convalesce and recover from his wounds. He was still resident at the Bart rton t depot when the award was announced.

Indian soldiers who were assessed as being well enough to return to their units were marched from the convalescent camp to the railway station in New Milton where they took trains back to the front line.

This must have been a repeated spectacle judging by the number of postcards that were printed showing Miltonians at the station watching the soldiers depart rt. t

By the spring of 1916 the Indian army had, mostly left ftt Europe to fight in warmer climes in the Middle East. In 1917 the Bart rton t depot staff fff raised funds to place a memorial in Bart rton t to commemorate the Indian Convalescent depot. It was unveiled by Lt. Col. Chayt ytor-White t on 10th July 1917.

On the 10th of July 2018 New Milton Town Council hosted a commemorative event with guests from the Indian and Pakistani High Commission and the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire.

A similar event was held in 2019.

Sadly this year because of the health risks it is not possible to repeat the ceremony although a wreath will be laid at 3.00pm.

Krysia Watson

Chair of New Forest Beekeepers Krysia Watson is our ‘Meet the Locals’ subject this month.

Krysia has lived in the New Forest for many years and is the Practice Manager at Heppenstalls Solicitors in New Milton. She is also Chair of the New Forest Beekeepers Association.

Krysia was born and raised in a small village on the outskirts of Swindon in Wiltshire. Her father was a carpenter and her mum looked after the home, Krysia and her three siblings. Growing up in the countryside provided Krysia with an idyllic rural education and love of nature.

Free time was spent with her sisters and brother playing in farmers fields and making dens out of haybales. At home they helped their father grow vegetables and tend the garden.

Sometime in 1988 Krysia spotted a swarm of bees and told her father. Her dad, ever the practical countryman

collected the swarm, and began learning about beekeeping eventually building up to about 30 hives over the Marlborough Downs After leaving college in Swindon Krysia worked as an instructor at Camp America in California for several months before returning home to begin her studies in Human Resources at University. Krysia met her future husband, Richard, in Swindon before starting University.

After graduating Richard’s career brought him to Southampton and Krysia was able to work in HR for the NHS in Portsmouth. When their family was blessed with the arrival of their children, Emmilyn and Oliver, they decided to move from Southampton to Sway village where the children could benefit from the same style of rural life that Krysia and Richard had enjoyed.

On moving to Sway Krysia had a number of contract roles before she became the Practice Manager for Heppenstalls Solicitors in 2014. In her role Krysia ensures the smooth running of the business in this busy and varied role. Krysia organises training, recruitment, pay, insurance, accreditations and events marketing. She also oversees the smooth running of the vital IT and phone systems.

This has paid off in recent times as the staff were able to work from home during the recent virus lockdown.

Heppenstalls has been serving the local community by providing legal services since 1893 when the first office opened in Lymington. The firm invests heavily in supporting local community projects such as the food bank based in Lymington and sponsored the publication of a heritage walk map in New Milton enabling

advice and guidance to apiarists in the Forest for over 100 years.

They were one of the founding sections of the New Forest Show when it first started at Netley Marsh in 1920. In the early days, the association kept bees on the Forest where the heather was an important nectar source.

It is at the New Forest Show that Krysia has another role in the Bee Tent. In 2016 following in her father’s footsteps she took up beekeeping after seeing a swarm on the allotments. She now has 16 hives in her garden and at various farm locations through the New Forest. Krysia joined the New Forest Beekeepers Association, which has been providing support,

In 2019 Krysia became the chair of the group. She is very keen to see the association continue to support beekeepers in the Forest and provide interesting topics for training and support of their members. The association also offers members of the public advice and assistance if they are concerned about swarms of bees or help identifying Asian Hornets. The association also provides education to the public and raises awareness of the importance of bees to the public. She is very pleased to see that there is an increasing number of younger members in the association as a result. The membership now stands at about 170.

Bees, and other pollinators, have a crucial role in our ecosystem and we should be doing all we can to support their survival.

Through better education and awareness provided by the New Forest Beekeepers Association and other likeminded groups, attitudes are changing. Farmers are using less pesticides.

Hedgerows are being left to provide a habitat for bees and other pollinators. Krysia is keen to point out that we can all do our bit to help if we have a garden. We can plant bee friendly flowers which can easily be obtained in local garden shops. By leaving dandelions, daisies and clover on the lawn we provide a rich source of nectar for bees.

Nature on your Doorstep July is the height of summer in the UK and usually warmer than our traditionally wet Wimbledon month of June.

There is the traditional benchmark of St Swithun’s Day, as the legend states, if it rains on July 15th it will continue for forty days, if it’s sunny we should look forward to a hot spell of weather for the rest of the summer. We will see!

July is the peak time for wildflowers and consequently it’s a great time to observe the insects, butterflies and bees that feed on them.

Dragonflies are abundant during this season, with around a dozen common British species look out for. The smaller damselfly has only eight different variations. Look out for them over any water in your garden or in the New Forest anytime between now and September. They are best spotted on warm, still days and come out when the sun is high, so after mid-morning. Try to

take a good look at their wings for any markings, and the colour and shape of their abdomens of you want to tell the difference. There are many resources online to help you identify the species and do more research.

Another interesting species to examine in this hot weather is the moth. With over two and a half thousand different species in Britain, there’s plenty to learn about these night-time fliers. You will easily see them attracted to outdoor lights or windows, but it is relatively simple to make a ‘moth trap’ and investigate them a little more. If you drape a white sheet over a chair outside and simply shine a torch on it, you will attract quite a few. The best time is during the warm, humid summer nights. You can get a closer look at their wings and patterns and try and identify them.

Bugle gets a Haircut...and a kennel mate!

It comes to something when your dog can get a wash, cut and blow dry but we cant!!

Bernese Mountain Dogs have a heavy moult usually twice a year. This is known as ‘blowing off’ the coat and provides a challenge to most vacuum cleaners! They have a double coat, which is designed to retain heat in winter and keep them cool in summer so under no circumstances should they be clipped.

We try and time the appointments for the start of a moult as the wash helps to remove the worst of the hair.

Bugle also has a trim around the edges, in particular his trousers, ears and paws. If we don’t trim his trousers they can literally sweep the floor as he walks which means plenty of the outside comes in! As his fur grows very quickly, we aim to get this done every quarter, but sometimes we have to do

an interim trim ourselves.

On a very hot day in May, we took Bugle to the groomers three hours later we picked up a very sleek and shiny bear! In the meantime, Gary and I decided that we could not let the side down so I gave Gary a haircut and took the scissors to the front of my head( I did not ask Gary to do mine as I had

seen his previous attempts on Bugle!). I know that our respective hairdressers/ barbers will have a fit when we eventually get back to them but it was either that or the ‘Yorkshire Terrier Bow’!!

On a different note, we have been thinking for some time about getting another dog and can announce that Bugle will have a kennel mate from the end of July. The puppy is a descendant of Bugle’s on his father’s side and I have worked out that it will be his great nephew! We hope that our beautiful boy will not be too put out at having to share his column in the coming months and look forward to introducing you all to the new addition to the family. 26 March 2020 the Government urged house buyers to put their imminent property moves on hold during the UK lockdown designed to stem the tide of coronavirus. Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick said those due to move house should rearrange to a new date and delay the process of changing property.

He said that even those scheduled to move on Friday should rethink plans to bring in the removal vans. He tweeted “I know that many people across the country are due to move house tomorrow. Whilst emergency measures are in place, all parties should do all they can to agree a new move date� This meant there were a lot of people who had exchanged contracts who had to work with other parties in a chain to agree a new move date.

Mortgage lenders agreed to extend mortgage offers to enable this to be done. The Housing Secretary estimated that some 450,000 buyers had to put their plans on hold. There was a pause in operations for high street estate agents.

14 May 2020 government guidance gave the go-ahead for estate agent offices to open for business provided they considered how and when to reopen their offices in line with safer working guidance and social distancing measures.

Between 26 March and 14 May we had continued working trying to progress matters so that as soon as people could move home

we were in a position that they would be able to do so. It had been quite peaceful but on 14 May the telephones started ringing again and people were wondering when they were going to be able to move. A lot of pent up demand had built into the market during the lockdown.

While estate agents, surveyors, conveyancing solicitors and removal firms are eager to see the market return to normal, it will take time to adjust to new practises and ways of working. It is vital that everyone involved in the buying and selling of property observes Government guidance on social distancing in order to help ensure that the market can remain open long term.

Please do not visit offices, view houses or allow your house to be viewed if you are showing symptoms or if you have been asked to self isolate.

Please be flexible with moving dates especially if one of the parties in the chain falls ill with coronavirus or has to self isolate.

Local History

Gustavus Brander (1720-87)

It’s cert rtainly t an exotic name, Gustavus Brander. He may have been born in London, but he had Swedish antecedents and came to play a significant part rtt in Christchurch’s history ry. y

his country ryy home in Christchurch, none other than the impressive Priory ryy House, which lies within a couple of metres of the Priory ryy Church’s south wall.

Christchurch History Society Millennium Blue Plaque which tells us that Brander built Priory House c.1776 and that he was also Lord of the Manor of Christchurch Twynham, or Twyneham (author).

A naturalist (that’s not someone stripping off fff at Studland if you’re wondering) and raised with mercantilism in mind, Brander was successful, becoming a director of the Bank of England, no doubt helped by inheriting a fort rtune t from an uncle (if only).

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1754. In the same year he also became a founder member of the Society for the Encouragement of Art rts, t Manufactures and Commerce, whose principal aim was stimulating industry ryy through the awarding of prizes.

Too much work would have made Gustavus dull, so he also liked his ‘pursuits’, including scientific dabblings, which he enjoyed at

Brander had this spacious home built in c.1776 when he was in his mid-50s (it was Grade II Listed 200 years later in 1976). Apparently, while he was superv rvising v the building works, the remains of a significant collection of conventual buildings were uncovered, lost aft fter t the priory ryy had been closed by Henry ryy VIII as part rtt of his Dissolution.

The oddest find, however, was a concealed stash of bird bones, which has never been satisfactorily explained, although it has been posited that this might have indicated some pagan use for the site prior to it becoming ‘Christ Church’.

There’s a Christchurch History ryy Society Millennium Blue Plaque around the back of the Monastery ryy Garden, telling us more about Brander and Priory ryy House.

It was whilst in the area that Brander became fascinated by fossils, which were abundant, e.g. among the clays at Bart rton. t A set of his locally-collected fossils were presented by him to the British Museum, of which he became a trustee. These were described by Daniel Solander (1733-82), a Swedish naturalist, in a scrumptiously illustrated work entitled ‘Collection of Hampshire Fossils Deposited in the British Museum by Gustavus Brander’ (published by Brander himself, London, 1766).

The oddest incident in Brander’s life occurred in 1768 when his coach & horses dart rted t for the Thames in London: gratitude for his narrow escape translated into bequests for the Priory ry, y including the dosh for a thanksgiving on the third Sunday of August. Brander married Elizabeth Lloyd (née Gulston), the widow of Admiral John Lloyd, in January ryy 1780.

Brander, ever the polymath, also took an interest in cooking.

He owned one of the oldest, medieval cookbooks, ‘The Forme of Cury ry’ y (‘The Method of Cooking’ as ‘cury ry’ y came from a Middle French word meaning ‘to cook’, so don’t get too excited you curry ryy lovers). This book was presented to Queen Charlotte, the consort rtt of George III, three years or so aft fter t Brander’s death, in 1790. Apparently, its authors were master cooks of the late14th century ryy king, Richard II, and it was the first cookbook

mentioning olive oil, some spices such as cloves, and gourds.

As well as publishing a book, Brander took an interest in literature and the art rts t and wrote about the eff ffects f of lightning (as you do).

Brander benefited the Priory ry, y not only by building Priory ryy House, which is used by the Priory ryy today, but also by providing the considerable sum of £500, which equates to about £80,000 in today’s wonga, for the Priory ry’s y first organ.

Some might disagree about the legacy of Priory ryy House, which was built uncomfort rtably t close to the Priory ry’s y south wall. I doubt Brander would get away with it today. Of the many visitors to Priory ryy House, the most famous was undoubtedly Prince Louis Philippe (1773-1850), who stayed here in 1807 whilst exiled during the Napoleonic Wars.

He was crowned French king in 1830 but was forced to abdicate aft fter t the 1848 revolution.

His simplicity and directness make you believe that all is that’s needed in the world is a dose of good old fashioned kindness.

From the first page, I was drawn into the world of Joseph. His eloquent quotations were inspirational and the candour in his delivery

made each conversation a witty sparring match. This is a therapeutic read, something that resonates and offers a different outlook to the grim reality we all have faced in the first half of 2020. Ellory offers so much by using quotes from great writers on each page and lamenting the sad fact that few people bother to read books these days.

It’s a whirlwind journey through literature as well as a story in itself. Ellory weaves a colourful tapestry of words from prominent writers and thinkers such as Bukowski, Hemingway, Dickens, Mark Twain and Tennessee Williams to name but a few. To add to that, each character has the name of a famous writer such as Emily Bronte or Rudyard Kipling. This increases the whimsical sense of fantasy in the book.

Although the introduction of each does get a little repetitive, I found it gave an edge to the humour of the story.
