If I could sum up this year in one word, it would be “productive”.

We celebrated two commencement ceremonies, our DNP Class of 2016 in December and our MS Class of 2017 in May, and are very proud of their hard work and accomplishments. In January, we welcomed 82 new SRNAs to the Class of 2019. We also honored our students and clinical partners in Orlando and South Florida for their service during the Pulse Nightclub and Fort Lauderdale Airport tragedies. Their work exemplifies Barry University’s commitment to social justice and collaborative service.

Our alumni achieved great success this year. Elizabeth O’Neill, ’06, was named Chief CRNA and Kevin Kennedy, ’03, was named to Assistant Chief CRNA. Heidi Aleman-Ortega, ’95 and ’16, and Erin Bauer, ’06 and ’16, published scholarly work in the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Journal’s February 2017 issue. Michael Long, ’15, also published scholarly work in the Open Journal of Anesthesiology in March 2017. We are thrilled to hear such great news from our alumni!

Our hardest work is yet to come. In the summer of 2018, the Master of Science in Anesthesiology will transition to the Post-Baccalaureate DNP in Anesthesiology for entry-level training. We are pending COA accreditation approval and treasure the hard work of our faculty and colleagues. We are committed to maintaining our high quality in nurse anesthesia education through this next chapter.

In December 2016, we celebrated the Commencement Ceremony for 13 graduates of the DNP with Specialization in Anesthesiology Class of 2016. Master of Science in Anesthesiology In a nutshell, what do you do?

I am currently serving as one of the Assistant Chief CRNA's and provide anesthesia for US Anesthesia Partners – Florida. Working primarily at the main Florida hospital campus in Orlando, I generally work night shifts with a remarkable team of CRNA's and anesthesiologists. What I particularly appreciate is the opportunity to practice anesthesia to the full extent we were taught.

What are you working on right now?

I am currently work on the natural responsibilities that comes along with management, and perhaps one day I will complete my DNP. I also have the pleasure of working on our farm and being a husband to my better 99 percent and father to three beautiful and gifted daughters.

Why do you love what you do?

I love being a CRNA because it fulfills my natural desire to make a meaningful and significant difference in someone's life. As CRNA's, we have an opportunity to accomplish this many times each day we go to work. Such opportunities are rare in most occupations, which makes me all the more thankful to be part of this profession.

How did Barry University help you get there?

I received my master’s in anesthesiology from Barry University in 2003. I am indeed grateful for the rigorous and comprehensive education Barry provides both inside the OR and in the classroom.

I formed friendships that last to today, and I will never forget the first lecture given by Dr. John McFadden, who made every lecture memorable and applicable. Another professor, Steve Clark, always expected the best from each one of his students and continually encouraged us in highly productive ways. All the many gifted classroom professors, CRNAs at ORMC, and Arnold Palmer fostered my love for anesthesia and more than prepared me for my CRNA career. They taught me a significant lesson: always remain a perpetual student.

Ironically, the more we know the more we realize how much we don't know. I love this truth about anesthesia. I owe much to my degree from Barry.

Master of Science Anesthesiology In a nutshell, what do you do?

I was promoted to chief CRNA in 2016. I, along with three assistant chiefs, manage 165 CRNAs across eight hospitals and nine surgery centers in Central Florida. Included in our responsibilities are recruiting, interviewing, hiring and onboarding. Once new hires start, we provide ongoing evaluations and growth opportunities, including pediatric and CV specialty tracks. We meet with physician and corporate leadership on a routine basis to discuss staffing needs, retention strategies and company goals for the future.

I manage the daily schedule and answer scheduling questions with the help of two schedulers in our office. Our CRNA leadership team updates existing policies and writes new policies as they pertain to the needs of our employees and our company.

What are you working on right now?

I am heavily involved in scheduling, both day-to-day and long term. Our company has grown tremendously over the past six years as we have attempted to keep up with the aging population and the growth of our hospital system.

We staff an average of 140 anesthetizing sites on a daily basis, and it is a challenge to provide coverage for our facilities while creating a workable schedule for our employees. We are looking at best practices across our corporation as well as OR utilization data at all of our sites to create a more streamlined and predictable scheduling process; it is a huge task. I am also updating compensation policies and am collaborating with physician and CRNA leadership to write policy for the CV and Pediatric CRNA evaluation process.

Why do you love what you do?

Nursing was a career change for me. Before becoming a nurse (and then a CRNA), I worked in the business world as administrative support to marketing and sales directors. It was a lot of fun, but I always felt like something was missing. I wanted to work in a field where I could feel like I made a difference to people and that is what lead me to health care.

I have always been a thinker. I am analytical and like the challenge of being given a puzzle to solve. I also like to look at the big picture of a situation and see how to get there logically. I am empathetic and compassionate and can relate to people on their level. I do like the satisfaction of making people happy or making them feel better, because I could do something helpful, say "yes" to something they asked for or be encouraging. I think being in leadership allows me to use my life and work experiences to make just as much of a difference in the day-to-day life my colleagues as it has done for my patients over the years.

How did Barry University help you get there?

Barry University was instrumental in teaching me not only the clinical skills I needed to practice anesthesia, but the skills necessary to be successful in a leadership role. I admire the faculty and directors in my anesthesia program for their integrity, empathy and strong work ethic. They set a great example and gave me a great foundation for my career.

Publication Corner Heidi Aleman-Ortega, DNP, CRNA was published in the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Journal February 2017 issue for her article titled, “Neuraxial Anesthesia and the Use of Sterile Gowning.” Dr. Aleman-Ortega earned her DNP with a specialization in anesthesiology from Barry University in July 2016. She practices clinically in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The full article can be viewed in the February 2017 AORN Journal, Volume 105, Issue 2.

Erin Bauer, DNP, CRNA won the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Journal 2016 Writer's Contest for her article titled, “Preoperative Screening for Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Children: A Systematic Literature Review.” The Writers Contest Award is granted by a peer review panel based on content, editorial quality, relevance to perioperative practices and patient care, and use of visual materials. Dr. Bauer received her award at the AORN Surgical Conference and Expo in Boston, Massachusetts, in April. Bauer earned her DNP with a specialization in anesthesiology from Barry University in July 2016. She practices clinically in Louisiana and teaches nurse anesthesia at Louisiana State University. The full article can be viewed in the December 2016 AORN Journal, Volume 104, Issue 6.

Michael Long, DNP, CRNA was published in the Open Journal of Anesthesiology March 2017 issue for his article “Intraoperative Gastric Tube Intubation: A Summary of Case Studies and Review of the Literature”. Dr. Long earned his DNP with a specialization in Anesthesiology from Barry University in 2015. He works clinically at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York.

The full article can be viewed in the March 2017 Open Journal of Anesthesiology, Volume 7, Issue 3.

Debra Varela, CRNA has been accepted for publication in the Anesthesia eJournal for her article titled, "Regional Anesthesia for Bilateral Carpal Tunnel Release". Varela will earn her DNP with Specialization in Anesthesiology from Barry University in July 2017.

She practices clinically in Arkansas.

Honors and Accolades South Florida SRNAs and Broward County first responders honored for service during Fort-Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport tragedy

SRNAs in the South Florida cohort were honored during the Anesthesia Heroes event with first responders in Broward County and Broward Health Medical Center for their service during the Fort-Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport tragedy. The Anesthesia Heroes event took place at the Weiner Museum of Decorative Arts (WMODA) in Dania Beach, FL on March 9, 2017. Their service exemplifies Barry University's commitment to inclusive community, social justice, and collaborative service.

Attendees included leaders from the Broward County Fire Department, Broward Health, WMODA, Barry University, and the Broward community.

Honors and Accolades TEAMHealth honors Barry SRNAs for support during Pulse Nightclub tragedy

In November, TEAMHealth honored Barry University SRNAs in the Orlando cohort for their support at Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) during the Pulse Nightclub shooting and presented students with an award to commemorate their service.

On the night of June 12, 2016, students worked around the clock to treat victims. The ORMC anesthesia team made up of physicians, nurse anesthetists and Barry University student nurse anesthetists gave trauma anesthesia care for over forty surgeries in the span of twenty-four hours. We are very proud of our students' service to the community and the ORMC anesthesia team to save lives.

Barry University Welcomes Jennifer Havenstein, CRNA Jennifer is a full-time Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology for Barry University’s Anesthesiology programs. She was born and raised in Michigan where she completed her BSN at Lake Superior State University in 1993. After working for five years as a critical care nurse at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, she applied to nurse anesthesia school. In 2000 she received her Masters of Science Degree in Anesthesia from The University of Detroit/Mercy.

Jennifer began her doctoral quest at The University of Michigan in August of 2014, and will be a candidate for The Doctor of Anesthesia Practice Degree (DrAP) in December of 2017. She spent the majority of her anesthesia career at St John Medical Center, an inner city Detroit Level one trauma center. Her areas

of interest lie in trauma anesthesia, cardiovascular surgery and fatigue science. Jennifer currently works as the manager of anesthesia services for two hospitals in the Henry Ford Health System. Teaching has always been her passion, and she is excited to embark on this new adventure with the Barry Faculty.

News and Announcements Congratulations to Jeanne Antolchick, PhD, CRNA on her nomination to the Region 7 of the Nominating Committee of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA). Her term will officially commence at the Annual Banquet during the AANA 2017 Nurse Anesthesia Annual Congress in Seattle, Washington, on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Dr. Antolchick serves as full-time faculty at Barry University in the Tampa cohort.

The DNP Class of 2017 will present their posters and scholarly work at the Hollywood Beach Marriott Hotel on Saturday, July 15, 2017. Poster presentations are open to the public from 1:00-5:00PM in Salon A of the Hollywood Beach Marriott Hotel (2501 North Ocean Drive, Hollywood, FL 33019). Barry University SRNAs participated in community fairs and blood drives at St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church in Winter Park, FL. Students provided health screenings and lifestyle guidance to members of the Orlando community. This event is made possible

by Michelle Hodge in memory of the late David Hodge, CRNA who served as clinical coordinator for Barry University in Orlando.

Barry University welcomed 82 new SRNAs into the Master of Science in Anesthesiology on January 9, 2017. SRNAs gathered on the Miami Shores main campus for Orientation and the first three days of classes. They have now begun their first semester of clinical rotation with clinical affiliates throughout the South Florida, West Palm, Tampa, Orlando, and Ocala/Gainesville areas.

News and Announcements Congratulations to five students in Barry University's DNP with Specialization in Anesthesiology who won the Kathleen Papes Memorial Scholarship Award. Ana Nedialkov, Bertha Onyemayobi, Elizandra Pierre, Martha Polizzi, and Juliya Soldyshev received the award in March 2017. The Kathleen Papes Scholarship in Nursing was established in memory of Dr. Kathleen Papes whose career was one of leadership and advocacy for the nursing profession. Applicants must have a 3.5 GPA, submit an essay, and provide a letter of recommendation from Barry University Nursing faculty member.

To meet new standards established by the Council on Accreditation for Nurse Anesthesia Programs, Barry University is in the process of transitioning from a MS, Anesthesiology to a Post-Baccalaureate DNP in Anesthesiology.

The Post-Baccalaureate DNP in Anesthesiology is a full-time, science based program offering five different locations throughout Florida. Our well-rounded faculty offer personalized attention from admission to graduation. The integrated curriculum combines science-based didactic coursework, clinical rotation and state-of-the-art simulation training. Professional training workshops feature expertise from community leaders in anesthesia.

The program is currently pending approval from the Council on Accreditation for Nurse Anesthesia Programs (COA).

Classes are expected to begin in May 2018 and applications would open by the end of summer 2017.
