"Day in the Life of a Nurse" 2017

The BSN Program welcomed students from Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) to its beautiful Miami Shores Campus on Nov 17, 2017, as part of the Nursing Consortium of South Florida's 'Day in the Life of a Nurse.'

'Day in the Life of a Nurse' was established in 2000 as an initiative to expose high school students to the nursing profession. Hospitals and other institutions are encouraged to participate. Barry University's BSN program has proudly participated in 'Day in the Life of a Nurse' for over five years.

The day started with an introduction to nursing by Dr. Tony Umadhay, Ph.D., CRNA, associate dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and Dr. Mary Colvin, Ph.D, RN, CNE, program director of the BSN program. Students then participated in activities with BSN program faculty members Dr. Rey Lavandera, Dr.Roselle SamsonMojares, and Dr. Lauren Schwal. The activities included a CPR and AED demo, a Nurse Q &A session, and birthing simulations with Victoria the birthing simulator.

Daryl Lazaro-Hawkins takes 1st Place at SimGHOSTS Simulation Conference Daryl Lazaro Hawkins attended a four-day simulation workshop in Raleigh, NC, where she participated in a pre-conference hackathon competition. The competition was part of the 2017 SimGHOSTS Simulation Conference. A hackathon, or “hackfest,” is a design sprint-like event in which creative, technical and subject matter experts come together to build an innovative project to address a common problem.

During the event, multiple teams worked together and created a solution. Hawkins participated with other health care professionals from California and Canada to create a low-cost, anatomically correct solution for a cricothyrotomy task trainer.

The team created a 3-D printed model that allowed for correct anatomical landmarks for cricothyrotomy insertion.

Study Abroad Haiti Trip 2018

On March 4–10, Dr. Maureen Shaw, Tatiana Rodriguez, and nine students from the undergraduate nursing program traveled to Haiti through the Nursing Study Abroad Program (NSAP). Students worked with the local Haitian community clinics and offered direct patient care in the form of blood pressure screenings, glucose screenings, health promotion/prevention education regarding the importance of breast screening, HIV education, and the importance of a healthy diet.

BSN GRADUATES of 2017 Class

On May 4, Aug 28, and Dec 7, 2017, our program celebrated students who successfully completed the BSN program. Proud of our #BarryNurses

Farewell to Dr. Rey Lavandera & Dr. Virginia Hackett Peter Pan said, “Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting.”

Dr. Virginia Hackett and Dr. Rey Lavandera are anything BUT forgettable. After 12 years of service to Barry University and positively impacting the lives of many students, both are leaving at the end of this academic year.

Hackett has been a nurse for over 40 years. Many of those 40 years were spent at the bedside caring for critically ill patients. Hackett taught critical care nursing and other subjects while faculty at Barry University.

Hackett will be retiring and plans to enjoy traveling with her husband.

She is currently the president of the Lambda Chi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. Lavandera is an expert in organ transplantation. He worked in this specialty area for many years at Jackson Health. He has taught pathophysiology, pharmacology and nursing research. He will be leaving for a full-time clinical practice position in the Miami area. Lavandera has agreed to serve as an adjunct faculty member. We hope to see him from time to time on campus. On behalf of the faculty, students and staff, thank-you Hackett and Lavandera for changing the lives of many future nurses and for contributing to the success of the undergraduate program! You will never be forgotten!
