UPCOMING FIXTURES

It’s been a while since we were last here for a first team men’s game at Jenner Park, and there have been a number of fixture changes since then.

On Tuesday, 21st February we travel to Taff’s Well for a re-arranged JD Cymru

The January transfer window saw a number of players moving in different directions.

Josh Bull and Kyle Jones joined us from our opponents today, Cambrian and Clydach Vale. Josh made his debut in the 5-0 win over Swansea University, scoring in that game, while Kyle Jones made his debut in last week’s 2-1 win at Trefelin.

In the other direction, striker Sam Johnson has left us to join Cambrian, while Mervyn Bennett has gone on loan to the Rhondda club for the rest of the season.

Mo Djalo has also gone out on loan, joining Ardal South-East side, Goytre (Gwent). Mo scored and got an assist in their recent 3-3 draw with Abertillery Bluebirds.

Defender Liam Walsh has left us to join Cymru Premier side, Aberystwyth Town, while defender Luke Sylvester, a familiar figure to us at Barry, joins from Penybont.

MANAGER OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to Lee Kendall, the JD Cymru South Manager of the Month for December.

Kendall has also been nominated for the January award, as has Luke Cooper as Cymru South player of the month.

MIKE LEWIS

Congratulations to Mike Lewis, who made his 200th appearance for Barry in last week’s game at Trefelin.

Mike first joined Barry from Aberystwyth Town in Summer 2016, becoming part of the Welsh League Division One championship winning team and earning promotion to the Cymru Premier, where he spent five years, earning us European football on two occasions.

DREW FAHIYA

Congratulations too to Drew Fahiya, who recently notched up 150 appearances for the club.

Fahiya has scored 33 times in his Barry career since first joining the club in July 2015, having previously played for Port Talbot, Dinas Powys and Rhoose.

Barry boy Fahiya scored seven goals in his first season in Welsh League Division One, including putting Barry ahead against TNS in the Welsh Cup Fourth Round, and hit nineteen goals in 2016-17 as part of our promotion winning season.

He left for Pontypridd in 2020, but returned to Barry last Summer.

BARRY TOWN WOMEN

The Genero Adran Premier has now completed Phase One, and the eight clubs

separated into the Championship and Plate sections for the second phase.

Barry Town Women finished in seventh in phase one, and find themselves facing Pontypridd United, Aberystwyth Town and Abergavenny Town once again in the second half of the season.

Phase Two begins with a home match against Abergavenny Town on Sunday, 26th February, kicking off at 2pm.

LUKE STARLING

Well done to 17-year old Development Player, Luke Starling, who joined up with the First Team Squad for last week’s game in Trefelin.

Hope to see you on the pitch for the firsts soon!

KAYNE McLAGGON

Congratulations to Kayne McLaggon who has signed a new contract extension, keeping him at Jenner Park until 2025.

Kayne has been with us at Barry since Summer 2017, scoring 97 goals and playing 176 games for the club.

HALF-TERM SOCCER SCHOOLS

Barry Town United Academy has Soccer Schools for players aged 5-13 this week during half-term.

Contact Academy Director Damian Flynn on damian.flynn@barrytown.co.uk for more information.

Saturday, 7th January, 2023

Barry Town United 5 Swansea Uni 0

Five different players found the back of the net in a second half blitz by Barry.

After a goal-less first half, Barry scored twice in a three minute spell at the start of the second half. Josh Graham scored the opener, from a Michael George cross, before Curtis McDonald scored the second, heading home from Jordan Cotterill’s well-weighted ball.

New signing from Cambrian, Josh Bull, came on as substitute and add Barry’s third.

The fourth goal wasn’t long in coming. Liam Warman was again unmarked and set up Callum Sainty, another newly introduced substitute, to score with a hard shot past the keeper from twelve yards.

The final goal came in the 81st minute when Josh Bull’s low cross across the face of the goal was netted by Kayne McLaggon, sliding in at the far post.

Llanelli Town 1 Barry Town United 1

Away at third placed Llanelli, Barry dropped their first league points since August, but nevertheless extended their lead over second placed Briton Ferry Llansawel to five points, with two games in hand.

Kayne McLaggon scored his twentieth league goal of the season, his 71st minute penalty kick giving Barry the lead, before the home side equalised seven minutes from time.

Substitute Josh Bull was in the penalty area when he cut inside his marker and brought down by a clumsy challenge, leading to the spot kick.

The home side struck back, and equalised after 83 minutes.

Attacking down the Barry right, Hillman’s cross wasn’t properly cleared and Sean Cronin’s fierce shot from the edge of the box gave Barry ‘keeper Mike Lewis little chance of saving.

Llanelli pushed for a late winner, but the Barry defence stayed strong.

Abergavenny 0-1 Barry Town United

In a hard-fought match, Barry struggled to break down a disciplined Abergavenny side, their well organised defence restricting the visitors’ shooting opportunities.

The home side had the game’s first real chance, Barry ‘keeper Mike Lewis saving Jac Evans’s fierce low shot at the second time of asking.

Barry stepped up the pace in the second half, with Bull firing over the bar and Luke Cooper seeing his header pushed away by the ‘keeper.

Town were awarded an 83rd minute penalty when Luke Cooper attempted cross at the far post was handled by a home defender.

Kayne McLaggon saw his penalty saved by Abergavenny ‘keeper Connor Christie, but McLaggon was first on the scene to net the rebound, scoring his 21st league goal of the season and securing the three points.

Trefelin BGC 1 Barry Town United 2

Two goals from defender Luke Cooper secured three points for Barry in a 2-1 win away at Trefelin.

Despite starting brightly, Barry found themselves a goal down after fourteen minutes.

Goalkeeper, Mike Lewis, making his 200th appearance for the club, came to clear a cross, but mistimed his punch, allowing Damon Thomas to hook the ball over the ‘keeper, bouncing into the empty net.

Barry’s equalised five minutes after the break.

Jordan Cotterill’s free kick from the right was met at the back post, where a thundering header from Luke Cooper gave no chance to home ‘keeper, Lucas Cavalcante.

Right at the death, Super Cooper scored the 90th minute match-winner.

McLaggon, with his back to goal, passed the ball backwards and Cooper’s powerful side-footed effort was drilled into the bottom corner.

CAMBRIAN & CLYDACH

Cambrian & Clydach Vale were originally formed in 1965 as Cambrian United, named after the local Cambrian Colliery.

In its formative years, the club played in the Rhondda & District League before being promoted to the South Wales Amateur League in 1972.

In 1992, they won the Second Division and during the following decade they were frequently competitive at the top of the first division, coming second in both 1999-2000 and 2001-02.

In 2002, Cambrian United merged with Clydach Vale Boys and Girls Club, repeating a previous attempt to join forces. This time it was more successful, with the newly named Cambrian and Clydach Vale BGC winning the South Wales Amateur League First Division in 2004-05, gaining promotion to the Welsh League Third Division.

They were immediately successful, gaining promotion for the next two seasons through Welsh League Division Three, as Champions, and then Division Two, as runners-up, playing in Division One by the time of the 2007-08 season.

Around the same time, former England manager, Terry Venables, became the club president, his mother coming from the area.

Cambrian & Clydach have been consistent members of the Welsh League Division One

and now JD Cymru South since that time, having never been relegated or promoted from the second tier of Welsh football.

In 2009-10, Cambrian were runners-up in Welsh League Division One, finishing a point behind champions, Goytre United.

The following season, they were third, behind Bryntirion and Afan Lido, before becoming Welsh League Division One Champions in 2011-12, six points clear of second placed Taff’s Well.

The purple patch continued into the following season, where Cambrian were second, behind West End, in 2012-13.

In 2018-19, Cambrian and Clydach Vale finished second to Penybont in the league, but reached the Nathaniel MG League Cup final, being beaten by Cardiff Met at Jenner Park, having knocked out Cymru Premier clubs, Barry Town United, Aberystwyth, Newtown and TNS en route to the final.

In the newly re-badged JD Cymru South, Cambrian came fourth on Points Per Game in the Corona-affected 2019-20 season, and, with no football in 2020-21, finished fourth once again last season.

With continued improvements to their home ground, Cambrian & Clydach are looking to cement their reputation as Rhondda’s Number One club with promotion to the JD Cymru Premier.

Barry Town 3 Cambrian & Clydach 2

A Kayne McLaggon hat-trick at Jenner Park took Cymru Premier side, Barry, to their first Welsh Cup semi-final since 2013, after a tough match against the Rhondda side from the division below.

McLaggon gave Barry the lead after 7 minutes, netting from a Jordan Cotterill free-kick, but Cambrian struck back to take a half-time lead through Mark Crutch and former Barry striker, Sam Jones.

Barry levelled after 66 minutes when, once again, a Cotterill free-kick was headed home by McLaggon, past 300-game former Barry goalkeeper, Dan Bradley.

McLaggon got his hat-trick after 75 minutes, and Cotterill a hat-trick of assists, when he set up the striker to score his third goal of the game. Receiving the ball outside the box, McLaggon danced around the defence, before firing past Bradley into the bottom corner to score the match-winner.

ONES TO WATCH

Twenty-three year old Keetch is a product of the impressive academy set up at Cambrian, having played for the club from youth level all the way up to senior football.

After a brief spells away at Haverfordwest and Merthyr between 2020/21 Keetch returned to Cambrian last January.

The left sided winger is an important creative outlet for Cambrian and Barry will need to be at their best to stop him out of the left.

Johnson will be a familiar face to all Barry supporters having only left the club last month to join Cambrian.

In his brief spell at the club Sam scored an important goal and assist for us against Aber Valley to help us qualify for the next round of the Welsh Cup.

In the 2021/22 season Sam ended the season as the Cymru South golden boot winner for Pontypridd Town helping them win promotion.

To All Cymru League, Adran League and Ardal League Clubs:

It is with great concern that the FAW note the increasing occurrence of pyrotechnics being set off at domestic matches in Wales.

A strong reminder is issued to Clubs at all levels of the game that pyrotechnics present a danger to spectators, players and officials. There is no safe use of pyrotechnics in spectator areas at football events with their use having many health risks such as loss of sight, limb or digit removal due to their explosive power.

The FAW will continue to take strong action against any individual and club in respect of an individual being in possession of any pyrotechnic device at a football match. This will involve not only a significant financial penalty but in the case of an individual found in possession of such a device, a ban. We should remind you that, in accordance with the FAW Rules, every Member Club is responsible for the conduct of its supporters.

In addition, it should be noted that being in possession of a pyrotechnic device at a football match or attempting to bring such a device into a football stadium may amount to a criminal offence which could result in arrest, charge and a minimum 3 year Football Banning Order.

Clubs are requested to be alert to this issue and we strongly urge that all necessary measures are taken to ensure their supporters are stopped from bringing pyrotechnic devices into grounds.

ACADEMY SPONSORS

This season has seen our local community become ever more closer to the club, especially our very own academy!

Many local business and charities have pledged a significant amount of sponsorship towards our academy teams, allowing us to not just maintain our quality provision, but also grow and enhance the experience for the children as well as proudly allow us to continue to do our very best to develop each and everyone!

A huge thank you to all sponsors for your contribution this season!

Mae’n ugain mlynedd eleni ers i’r Barri cipio Pencampwriaeth Uwchgynghrair Cymru am y tro diwethaf.

Yn ystod cyfnod aur y clwb ar ddiwedd y nawdegau a dechrau’r ganrif newydd, wnaeth Y Barri ennill yr Uwchgynghrair ar saith achlysur allan o wyth, rhwng 199596 a 2002-03.

Roedd 2003 ymysg y blynyddoedd mwya’ od ar gyfer cefnogwyr Y Barri, yn cwympo o’r ucheldiroedd llwyddiant ysgubol ar y cae yn y gwanwyn at golli’r tîm proffesiynol misoedd wedyn, ar ôl chwarae yn rowndiau rhagbrofol Cynghrair y Pencampwyr yn ystod yr haf.

Dechreuodd y flwyddyn gyda newid mawr oddi ar y cae. Toc cyn Dolig daeth y cyhoeddiad am bresenoldeb John Fashanu fel cadeirydd y clwb, gyda Kevin Green, perchennog y clwb yn parhau fel Prif Weithredwr.

Roedd Fash yn enwog ar gyfer ei yrfa pêl-droed fel rhan o’r Crazy Gang yn Wimbledon, yn ennill Cwpan FA yn 1988, ac fel cyflwynydd rhaglen TV Gladiators gydag Ulrika Jonssen.

Daeth i’r clwb gydag uchelgais ac arian tu ôl i’r geiriau gan dynion busnes Llundain.

Gyda gwreiddiau Nigeria, roedd Fash yn awyddus magu cysylltiadau rhwng Nigeria, ac yn rhoi cyfleodd i chwaraewyr o’r wlad yna yn Ewrop.

Ei fwriad oedd defnyddio’r Barri fel ffenest ar gyfer chwaraewyr ifanc i werthu nhw i glybiau mawr yr Uwchgynghrair yn

FASH A’R BARRI

Lloegr.

Hefyd, roedd Fash yn awyddus gwerthu hawliau darlledu pêl-droed gyffrous Y Barri i TV Africa, i ddarlledu ym mhob cornel o’r cyfandir yna, yn codi proffil y chwaraewyr a’r clwb ar yr un pryd.

Yn fuan iawn, wnaeth ffrwyth y bartneriaeth cyrraedd Parc Jenner – cyn Super Eagle Abiodun Baruwa.

Roedd Baruwa yn rhan o’r tîm llwyddiannus dan-23 Nigeria yng Ngemau Olympaidd 1996. Chwaraeodd hefyd yn ffeinal Cwpan Pencampwyr Affrica ar gyfer Shooting Stars yr un flwyddyn, yn colli allan yn erbyn Zamalek o’r Egypt ar giciau o’r smotyn.

Wedyn symudodd Baruwa i Ewrop, yn ymuno gyda Sion yn Y Swistir a Sturm Graz yn Awstria, ond chwaraeodd nifer llai o gemau dros y ddau cyn dod i’r Barri yn 2003.

Chwaraeodd Baruwa ei gem gyntaf yn erbyn Y Seintiau Newydd o flaen 1,147 o bobl ar ddiwedd mis Ionawr, gêm di-sgôr yn erbyn arweinwyr yr Uwchgynghrair ar y pryd.

Roedd Y Barri yn bell tu ôl y Seintiau, ond dros y gemau nesaf, wnaeth Y Barri lwyddo ennill bob un o’r 12 gêm wedyn, heblaw am gêm gyfartal oddi cartref ym Mangor.

Roedd y gêm yna, o flaen mil o bobl yn Ffordd Farrar, yn fwy enwog ar gyfer cefnogwr gartref cerdded allan o’r crowd ac yn siarad wyneb i wyneb wrth Baruwa ar y cae, gyda chyhuddiadau hiliaeth gan Fash wedyn.

Daeth ail chwaraewyr gyda chefndir Nigeria yn ystod mis Mawrth. Roedd Saheed Adebayo Akinfenwa yn dod o Lundain.

Gawn drafod mwy am ei yrfa ers gadael Y Barri mewn erthygl arall, ond sgoriodd yn ei gêm gyntaf, fel rhan o fuddugoliaeth 4-0 oddi cartref yn y Trallwng, a wnaeth sgorio yn gyson wedyn, yn rhwydo yn erbyn Derwyddon Cefn, Caerfyrddin, Aberystwyth a’r ddwy gôl yn curo Cwmbrân 2-1 ar ddydd Llun y Pasg.

Ar y cae, roedd breuddwydion Fash yn cael eu gwireddu, ond oddi ar y cae, doedd pethau ddim mor llwyddiannus, ac er gwaethaf cyrraedd Ewrop eto a chadeirydd y clwb yn ymddangos yn y jyngl ar gyfer I’m A Celebrity, roedd problemau ariannol i’r Barri ar y gorwel.

It’s twenty years since John Fashanu announced himself as the new Chair of Barry Town, midway through a season in which the club celebrated a treble double, having won the Welsh Premier and Welsh Cup double for a third successive season.

Fash had big ideas for the club, including using Barry as a shop window to attract and sell young Nigerian players to English Premiership clubs.

Amongst those who came to Jenner Park were former Olympic gold medalist and African Champions’ Cup finalist, Abiodun Baruwa, and a young Adebayo Akinfenwa (more about him another time!).

Barry won on the pitch, but off the field it was all going to go sour.

With 52 points from 20 games, Barry Town United are now eight points clear of second placed Briton Ferry Llansawel at the top of the JD Cymru South, with a game in hand. In recent weeks, Barry have won close matches at Abergavenny and Trefelin, after a 1-1 draw at third placed Llanelli.

Ferry were 2-1 winners at Ammanford last week, after losing 3-2 away at Cambrian.

In their Carmarthenshire derby, Llanelli scored twice late on in order to beat Carmarthen Town 3-1 away at Richmond Park. The Reds have 42 points from 19 games.

Fourth placed Afan Lido are continuing their strong run, having last lost in the first week of August. Recent weeks have seen a 2-1 win away at Pontardawe, a 3-0 home win over Carmarthen Town and a 5-2 victory away in their local derby versus Goytre United. Lido have 41 points from 21 games.

Cambrian & Clydach Vale are in fifth place, despite losing 3-1 at home to Abergavenny Town last week. In previous weeks they beat Pontardawe Town 2-0 away from home and Ferry 3-2. They have 34 points from 21 games.

Sixth placed Carmarthen Town are two points further behind, after recent defeats to Llanelli and Afan Lido.

In seventh place, Llantwit Major have 26 points after beating Swansea University 1-0 last weekend and beating Pontardawe Town 4-1 at Windmill Lane. Their match away at Ynyshir was abandoned.

Eighth placed Cwmbran Celtic have 24 points after beating Ynyshir Albions 4-1 last week.

Taff’s Well have the same number of points after playing Goytre United twice in a week. The Wellmen were beaten 2-0 at home but drew 2-2 away.

Trefelin are on a poor run with the 2-1 defeat to Barry last week coming on the back of an earlier 3-1 home defeat to Abergavenny Town, while local rivals Goytre United have taken four points from six in those games with Taff’s Well.

Four clubs are now on 19 points. Ammanford have lost their last pair of matches, beaten 2-1 at home by Briton Ferry last weekend and 2-1 at Swansea University at the end of January.

Abergavenny’s 3-1 win over Cambrian & Clydach takes them out of the relegation zone for the first time in months, with Swansea Uni and Pontardawe now there on goal difference after recent defeats.

Ynyshir remain bottom with nine points from 18 games.
