journey home.
See you next week at Windmill Lane for the return derby match.
Our two most recent JD Cymru South fixtures were both victims to the cold snap that took place before Christmas, freezing off our away matches against Taff’s Well and Abergavenny Town.
We’ll let you know when those matches are rescheduled.
Croeso cynnes i’r chwaraewyr, swyddogion a chefnogwyr Llanilltud Fawr ar gyfer ein gêm yn JD Cymru South heddiw ym Mharc Jenner.
Gobeithio cafodd bawb Nadolig Llawen a dymuniadau gorau i chi ar gyfer y flwyddyn newydd.
Welwch chi wythnos nesaf yn Lôn y Felin ar gyfer yr ail gêm derbi dros y gwyliau.
Mwynhewch y gêm heddiw a chewch siwrnai diogel adref.
A warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Llantwit Major to our JD Cymru South match today at Jenner Park.
I hope you all had a Merry Christmas, and best wishes for the New Year. Enjoy today’s game and have a safe
A reminder that the away match at Ynyshir Albions that was postponed in September as a mark of respect for the Queen’s death has been rescheduled for Saturday, 14th January, 2023, kicking off at 2pm.
A huge thank you to everybody in the club for participating in our Share A Smile campaign before Christmas. In total, we raised xxx for looked after children in the Vale of Glamorgan.
Our recent match against Cwmbran Celtic saw Troy Hiscock-Greening notch up his 200th appearance for Barry since first signing for the club in 2013/14, scoring 16 goals in that time, including his debut competitive appearance against Treforest.
Previously with Newport County and Merthyr, Troy has been one of the mainstays of the club for almost a decade. He was Young Player of the
Season in 2014/15 and made his 100th appearance for Barry in 2017, ironically also against Cwmbran Celtic.
Troy suffered a serious ACL injury in our opening JD Cymru Premier game of 2019/20 against Penybont, but has recovered to regain his position in the Barry line-up this season after a year at Pontypridd and Trethomas Bluebirds.
Well done, Troy.
Also, congratulations to today’s matchday magazine cover star, Callum Sainty, who recently reached the 150 appearance mark for Barry.
Congratulations to Mo Djalo on signing his first contract with the senior team.
18-year old Mo made his first team debut away at in the JD Cymru Premier Connah’s Quay Nomads last March, and scored his first goal for the senior side from the penalty spot away at Haverfordwest County in the MG Cup game in August.
A regular in the Development squad and frequently on the scoresheet, good luck, Mo!
Barry Town United Women were unlucky not to take a point in their pre-Christmas match against Cardiff City Women, the league leaders scoring in the 90th minute to win 1-0.
Following that result, Barry have only two matches remaining for in Phase One of the Genero Adran Premier League.
We are currently seventh in the eight team league, but are only four points away from fourth place, so there’s still everything to play for ahead of the league being split into two at the end of next month.
With the league taking a breather over the holidays and start of January, Barry’s next home league game is at home to Cardiff Met WFC on Sunday, 22nd January, kicking off at 2pm.
Congratulations to women’s team members Manon Pearce and Ruby Hamed-Jones who were both called up to Wales youth squads before Christmas.
Manon was called up to a training session as part of the Cymru under-19 squad, and Ruby to the under-17 age grade.
IN TOWN NEXT
Next Monday, 2nd January, we make the short return trip to Windmill Lane to face Llantwit Major in JD Cymru South. The match will kick off at 2pm.
Our next home league match will be on Saturday, 7th January when Swansea University are the visitors to Jenner Park. That will be a 2:30pm kick-off.
See you at the far post. Have a Happy New Year!
Ian
Barry came from a goal behind against Cwmbran Celtic to maintain their place at the top of the JD Cymru South, going seven points clear of second place.
The two clubs had met in a 6-2 goalfest at the start of the season in the Welsh Blood Service League Cup, and there was again an early goal when Cwmbran Celtic took the lead from a 14th minute corner, Alex Bonthron beating the Barry defence to be the first to the cross and putting the ball into the net.
It was no fluke against the run of play as the Cwmbran Celtic forward had already forced Barry ‘keeper Mike Lewis into action earlier in the game.
Barry levelled in the 43rd minute when Evan Press found Josh Graham in space in the box, and he finished calmly.
The home side got the winner with ten minutes remaining. The Cwmbran keeper was hesitant in coming off his line to reach a ball that had been chipped over the defence, and, while he waited to make a decision, Liam Warman reached the ball first and shot past him to score.
Cwmbran went close to an equaliser, hitting the woodwork in the dying minutes and pressurising Barry, but they were to rue their moments of lost possession.

Llantwit Major FC were founded in 1962 and celebrated their 60th anniversary by winning the JD Cymru South, the club’s highest honour to date.
The club joined the South Wales Amateur League in 1971, with Gwyn John becoming the club’s first official manager.
Llantwit were promoted to the First Division at the end of the 1976-77 season, winning that division at the end of the 1979-80 season. A year later, they did the double, winning the South Wales Amateur League First Division and the Corinthian Cup, something they repeated once more in the 1983-84 season. A third Corinthian Cup followed in 1986-87.
Following relegation, Llantwit were again promoted to SWAL Division One in 199899, after winning Division Two under the management of Kevin Pycroft and Phil Clay.
In 2011-12, Llantwit were again South Wales Amateur League Division One champions, this time earning promotion to the Welsh League from their Windmill Lane base.
After a series of mid-table finishes in Welsh League Division Three, Llantwit were promoted as Champions in the 2016-17 season, finishing eight points clear of second placed STM Sports.
They repeated the feat a year later, winning Welsh League Division Two by two points ahead of Pontypridd Town.
In 2018-19, their first season in Welsh League Division One, Llantwit finished in seventh place. The leagues were then revised, with the Welsh League’s top flight (the highest tier in south Wales, the second tier on an all-Wales level) becoming the JD Cymru South for the 2019-20 season. In that Coronavirusaffected season, Llantwit finished in eleventh place on a Points-Per-Game basis when the season was cancelled.
The 2020-21 season was cancelled at JD Cymru South level, meaning that 202122 was the return to football for the Vale of Glamorgan club. They surprised many by putting together a consistent campaign across the season, winning the championship in April.
The club finished the season with 74 points, five clear of second placed Pontypridd Town. However, the club were not allowed to take up promotion to the JD Cymru Premier after failing to meet the full criteria for the top tier license.
Following the season, manager Karl Lewis left the club and was replaced by Steve McCarthy-Campbell. After a rocky start to the 22-23 season, Llantwit find themselves in the top half of the table in mid-December.
The visiting Barry took a four goal first half lead to secure all three points at Windmill Lane in the Welsh League Third Division game.
After Llantwit had held out against Barry for nearly half an hour, Michael Hartley’s thirty-yard strike gave Barry the lead after 28 minutes.
That was followed by an overhead strike in the box from TJ Nagi two minutes later to double Barry’s advantage.
Just before half-time, Ryan Dorrian made it three, making the most of a Major mistake and rolling the ball into the net from distance.
The fourth came on the stroke of half-time when Nagi was brought down in the box and Hartley scored from the spot.
Llantwit got back into the game with a second half consolation goal, but Barry were comfortable winners.
(With thanks to Ashley Cox)
Lansdown has been a stalwart within this Llantwit Major team for 14 years having joined the club all the way back in 2008
The 33 year old shot stopper has been a key member of the squad throughout their rise up the divisions and played a crucial role in the club’s title success last season with 10 clean sheets in the league.
Although The Major have had a tougher start to this season, in the six games they’ve won Lansdown has only conceded two goals.
After a shaky start the season the signing of Marenghi from Llanelli Town has proved been the catalyst to kick-start Llantwit Majors season.
Paolo has previous played for Monmouth Town and Treowen Stars in the Ardal South East. He had shown his talents up front at that level before briefly joining Llanelli at the start of this summer.
However since signing for the Major Marenghi has scored seven goals in nine appearances, helping propel The Millers into the top half of the table.
This season has seen our local community become ever more closer to the club, especially our very own academy!
Many local business and charities have pledged a significant amount of sponsorship towards our academy teams, allowing us to not just maintain our quality provision, but also grow and enhance the experience for the children as well as proudly allow us to continue to do our very best to develop each and everyone!
A huge thank you to all sponsors for your contribution this season!
Erbyn hyn, mae’r Cwpan Y Byd yn drosodd. Llongyfarchiadau i’r Ariannin am ennill gwobr fwyaf pêl-droed ar ôl gêm anhygoel wythnos diwethaf.
Mae’n teimlo fel oes ers i’r gystadleuaeth dechrau hanner ffordd trwy fis Tachwedd, a’r wyth diwrnod o gemau rhwng Cymru dechrau’r Cwpan Y Byd am y tro gyntaf ers 64 mlynedd, ac yn gadael eto ar ôl cyfres o ganlyniadau siomedig yn y grŵp.
Er gwaethaf y pêl-droed, roedd mynychu Cwpan Y Byd am y tro gyntaf yn ein bywydau yn gamp, yn ogystal â bod yn antur. Roedd hi’n hwyl i gwrdd â nifer o gefnogwyr Y Barri o gwmpas Doha ar y ffordd mewn neu mas o’r gemau. Mae gormod o bobl i enwi bob un (mi wnâi anghofio rhywun, dwi’n siŵr!), ond roedd cynrychiolaeth gref gan Y Barri yna, ar ran y clwb a hefyd pobl sy’n dod o’r dref. Gobeithio cafodd pawb hwyl yna.
Wnaeth bob un grŵp cynllun gwahanol ar gyfer teithio i’r twrnamaint, gyda sawl yn aros yn Doha gyda Wonky Sheep, eraill yn trefnu taith annibynnol i’r wlad a nifer yn aros yn Dubai ac yn mynd i Qatar ar ddiwrnod y gemau.
Wrth gwrs, wnes i daith fwy cymhleth, yn teithio yn gyntaf at Abu Dhabi ac wedyn ymlaen i Dubai, cymryd y ffleits mewn i Qatar, ac ymlaen wedyn i Muscat yn Oman, ac, ar ôl i Gymru gadael y gystadleuaeth, adre via Amman a Petra yn Jordan (fy lleoliad arfaethedig os wnaeth Gymru cymhwyso ar gyfer rowndiau terfynol).
Ces i hwyl yn gwylio gêm gyfeillgar ryngwladol rhwng United Arab Emirates a Kazakhstan mewn Abu Dhabi (2-1 i’r wlad gartref), gwylio’r gêm agoriadol Qatar v Ecuador mewn snackbar clwb pêl-droed yn Dubai
a chrwydro stadiwm genedlaethol Oman gyda’r nos yn ystod cystadleuaeth athletau ym Muscat.
Ac wrth gwrs, gwneud yr holl ddigwyddiadau twristaidd yn ogystal â’r dwristiaeth pêl-droed.
Er gwaethaf fy mhrofiad yn teithio i’r Ewros yn 2016 ac eto yn 2020, roedd holl awyrgylch Cwpan Y Byd yn wahanol. Efallai oherwydd y lleoliad mewn un ddinas, roedd yr awyrgylch yn wahanol. Roedd hi’n bosib cwrdd â phobl o bob un o’r 32 wlad (neu hyd yn oed fwy) mewn unrhyw achlysur ar strydoedd Doha a’r Souq Wahif, canolbwynt y dre i lawer.
Felly, wnes i gwrdd â Lucas o Drelew ym Mhatagonia, rhywun sy’n eitha enwog yn y byd Ladin-Americanaidd am wneud her gwariant arian ar y ffordd i’r Cwpan Y Byd. Gweler ffoto. Ar ddechrau’r twrnamaint, roedd Mecsicanwyr ym mhobman yn y ddinas, gyda nifer o Archentwyr yn ail – yna ar gyfer gwylio Messi yn codi’r Cwpan. Roedd e’n amlwg erbyn gêm yr wyth olaf yn erbyn yr Iseldiroedd, fod y rhan fwyaf o’r ffans yn y stadiwm oedd yn dod o Dde Amerig.
Roedd nifer o gefnogwyr Ecuador yn uwch nag oeddwn i’n disgwyl hefyd, a’r nifer o gefnogwyr Ewropeaidd cyffredinol yn amlwg yn llai.
Yn sicr, profiad gwahanol oedd cyrraedd Doha ar ddiwrnod gêm Iran. Roedd y ffleit o Ddubai yn llawn cefnogwyr Cymru, ond y maes awyr Doha yn llawn cefnogwyr Iran, newydd gyrraedd o’r wlad gyfagos.
Gêm gartref oedd hyn, er gwaethaf yr holl gyffro a phrotestiadau gartref yn y wlad. Hyd yn oed am ddeg
y bore, roedd Metro Doha yn swnllyd iawn oherwydd yr Iraniad. Efallai y tro cyntaf i fi fethu clywed fy hunain dros sŵn parhaol y gwrthwynebwyr.
Felly, mae’r siwrnai Cymru at Gwpan Y Byd wedi dod i ben. Ond dwi’n falch wnaethon ni gyrraedd y twrnamaint ar ôl yr holl fethiannau blaenorol. Gawn weld os rydyn ni’n gallu cymhwyso ar gyfer Ewro24 ac wedyn Cwpan Y Byd nesaf yn Ngogledd America. Ymlaen!
So, the World Cup is over. Congratulations to Argentina, after an amazing final last week.
Despite the disappointment of Wales’ results, it was quite the experience to see us in the World Cup for the first time in my lifetime, and great to see so many Barry Town fans there in Qatar to witness it.
We all had a different experience, travelling and staying in different places.
The atmosphere was quite different to our previous Euro tournament trips with Mexicans and Argentinians the largest travelling nationalities in our time there. On matchday, though, you couldn’t miss the Iranians, who made it like a home game for them.
Let’s see if we can now qualify for Euro 24 and the World Cup in North America. Ymlaen!
Ian JohnsonThe pre-Christmas cold snap sadly meant the cancellation of almost two rounds of JD Cymru South fixtures, leaving Barry on top of the league at Christmas.
Back to back home victories over Carmarthen Town and Cwmbran Celtic took Barry to a seven point lead, but that was reduced to four when Briton Ferry Llansawel were 2-1 winners away at Swansea University in the only game played on the weekend of 9th-11th December.
Christmas deadlines mean that we go to print before last week’s match between Taff’s Well and Ferry, but, whatever that result, Barry are top and have games in hand over their nearest challenger.
Barry retain their seven point advantage over third placed Llanelli, who were surprisingly beaten 4-1 at home by Trefelin at the start of the month.
Meanwhile, Afan Lido have risen to fourth place in the league on the back of a twelve-match unbeaten run. They last lost in the league when beaten by Barry on the 2nd August. Most recently they beat Ynyshir 1-0 at home after beating Briton Ferry 3-2.
Carmarthen Town are in fifth, after a disappointing few weeks saw them lose to title challengers Ferry and Barry, before picking up a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Taff’s Well. That
leaves the Old Gold with 25 points from 15 games – eleven behind Barry, who have 36 from 14 games.
Trefelin have risen to sixth place after three consecutive wins, beating Ammanford, Ynyshir and Llanelli.
On the other hand, seventh-placed Cambrian and Clydach have gone into reverse – losing their last three games, against Barry, Llantwit Major and Swansea University.
Llantwit Major are in eighth, with 19 points on their tally so far. Their most recent result was a surprise 4-3 reverse away against Goytre United, following from a purple patch where they had won five matches on the trot before mid-November.
In the bottom of half of the table, Taff’s Well have won just one league game since mid-September, while tenth-placed Ammanford’s recent points have come mainly at the expense of lower placed clubs.
The battle at the bottom is heating up, with five clubs from 11th to 16th within four points of each other. Those include Cwmbran Celtic, Pontardawe Town, Swansea University, Abergavenny Town and Goytre United.
At the very bottom of the Cymru South, Ynyshir Albions have eight points, having lost their last three games.
Ian JohnsonHome stadium. Home colours. Home game. The football community knows the importance of home. But this year, thousands of people will be spending Christmas in dingy hostels, on friends’ sofas, or even sleeping in freezing cars. This is something we can’t ignore.
So we are making a stand. The JD Cymru Leagues is pleased to announce its support for the national #NoHomeKit campaign taking place across football in England and Wales.
Shelter Cymru are asking clubs and fans to swap their home colours for an away or third kit, show support and raise vital funds for those with no safe place to call home. Clubs in the JD Cymru Premier, JD Cymru North and JD Cymru South will get involved in the campaign in their fixtures on December 26 & 27.
The cost of living crisis is hitting hard. In the last year Wales has seen the highest rent rises in the UK outside London, while housing benefits have flatlined. 1 in 4 people in Wales fear they will become homeless within a year.
Rent has skyrocketed, people are unable to pay their energy bills, are cutting back on grocery essentials and are relying on food banks. Employment is no safety net; those in work are also becoming poorer, fighting to keep a roof over their families’ heads.
Whether you are watching at the ground or following along from home this Christmas, join the movement fighting to defend the right to a safe, secure and affordable home for everyone. Get involved by swapping your home colours for an away or third kit and text ‘HOME’ to 70480 to donate £10. You can also donate at https://justgiving.com/campaign/ NoHomeKitCymru.
Kerys Sheppard, Head of Fundraising at Shelter Cymru, said: “Last year it was fantastic to see fans and teams across Wales come together to fight the housing emergency. By taking part in No Home Kit in 2022, the football community will once again harness the unifying power of the game and do something special to help those facing and experiencing homelessness in Wales.
“Our frontline services are braced for an incredibly tough winter as the cost of living crisis bites, with 1 in 4 people in Wales afraid they may become homeless within a year. In these challenging times, it’s brilliant that so many teams and fans are stepping up and supporting #NoHomeKit this Christmas.”
