However, the visitors were level by half-time, with Andrew Hewitt scoring after half an hour, and Thomas Meechan making it two apiece.

Barry drew clear against ten minutes into the second half when Drew Fahiya scored, and then Merv Bennett scored his first senior goal for the club, just before the hour mark.

In the last ten minutes, Drew Fahiya scored his second of the game, and Jordan Cotterill added his name to the scoresheet to make it 6-2 to Barry.

MATCH REPORT

JD Cymru South Saturday, 26th November, 2022 Barry Town United 1 Carmarthen 0

Liam Warman scored the only goal before half time, after the red mist descended on Old Gold captain Greg Walters.

The result leaves Barry top of the table and four points clear of second placed Llanelli Town, while Carmarthen remain in fourth, nine points behind Barry.

With both sides in the upper echelons of the Cymru South table, attack was certainly going to be the recipe for success, and the opening half produced just that.

For large periods of the first half, it was Carmarthen who had the better chances. Thomas Dyson and Liam Thomas having half chances, but they came to nothing, but they were certainly in the ascendancy.

Then the game changed on the half hour mark. Greg Walters fouled Kayne McLaggon, and after the referee awarded the free kick, Walters kicked McLaggon, who was lying in pain on the floor. The referee had no option but to send him off, in what was a bonkers decision from the away captain.

The sending off certainly boosted Barry’s confidence as they pushed themselves up field and took the lead seven minutes before the half time break.

McLaggon laid the ball of to Liam Warman on the edge of the area. His shot took a deflection and looped over a back-pedalling Nicholas Jones, who had no chance of saving it, and Barry were in the lead at the break.

There’s no doubting Barry were looking to turn the screw after the break, and almost doubled their lead. Jordan Cotterill’s effort looked destined to nestle in the net, but Matthew Delaney made a goal line clearance to keep the deficit to one.

Warman then had a chance to convert a Josh Graham cross, but he couldn’t get any connection on it. If he did, the lead would have been doubled.

For large swathes of the second half, however, the game was played in Carmarthen’s half, and a combination of Barry not executing in the final third and Carmarthen not able to get out and counter made for a tough watch at times.

Carmarthen did find themselves further up the field in the final stages of the game, but their efforts came to nothing, and they left Jenner Park defeated.

CWMBRAN CELTIC

Cwmbran Celtic were formed in 1925, known in the early years as CYMS, Catholic Young Men’s Society.

After the immediate success of winning the Newport & District Division 2 Section A title in 1925/26 there was a 25-year wait until the next trophy, the Premier Division title in 1950/51.

The club disbanded in the late 1950s, largely as a consequence of National Service call-ups, but was rejuvenated by a large influx of youth and junior players.

The club was reformed in 1964 under the new name of Cwmbran Catholics and then as Cwmbran Celtic in 1972/73 when playing membership became open to all denominations. That season they won the Gwent Amateur Cup and were runners-up in the Gwent Premier League.

In 1979 the club bought its own premises at Oak Street in Old Cwmbran, which remains the club’s headquarters. Previously located at Cwmbran Park, in 1995 Celtic moved to their current ground in the shadows of Cwmbran Stadium, a ground developed over many years since then under a lease from Torfaen Council.

Playing in the Gwent County League, Cwmbran Celtic finished runners-up in 2004/05 and gained promotion to the Welsh League by moving across the road

to use Cwmbran Stadium.

In their first season at the higher league, they escaped immediate relegation on the final day of the season, but, moving back to the renamed Celtic Park, they went on to win Welsh League Division Three in 2006/07.

The following seasons were spent consolidating in Division Two, before gaining promotion to Welsh League Division One as runners-up at the end of the 2009/10 season.

Cwmbran Celtic were able to find their feet in Division One, playing four seasons in the Welsh second tier before being relegated in 2013/14. However, they only spent two seasons in Division Two before once again earning promotion in second place at the end of 2015/16.

Since then, Cwmbran Celtic have retained their position in the second tier, switching from Welsh League Division One to Cymru South when the league reorganisation took place in 2019.

In the Covid-19 affected 2019-20 season, Cwmbran Celtic were in 13th when the season ended, with a points per game of 1 per match, gaining an average of one point in each of their 22 games, retaining their league position.

Promotion challenging Barry Town were frustrated by a goal-less home draw against Cwmbran Celtic, who spent most of the game down to ten men.

The Gwent visitors’ captain Owen Cook was sent off in the tenth minute for a dangerously high tackle, but that didn’t help Barry to break through.

Drew Fahiya created a good early chance for James Dixon, delivering a cross from the right, but Dixon was unable to get the shot on target. Later, Dixon was able to dribble past the Celtic ‘keeper, but was too wide of the goal to score.

Callum Sainty also had a good chance to break the deadlock for Barry, but his header was well saved.

At the other end, Josh Bull hit the woodwork for Cwmbran Celtic, while Barry also ended the game with ten men after Dixon saw a second yellow card.

Er gwaethaf ei hanes fel tref newydd, ychydig o filltiroedd i’r gogledd o Gasnewydd, mae Cwmbrân ymysg un o’r trefi mwyaf yng Nghymru. Erbyn hyn mae Cwmbrân Celtic yn brif glwb y dref ers degawd, ond mae llawer o bobl dal yn ymgysylltu pêl-droed yn Nhorfaen gyda Thref Cwmbrân, pencampwyr gyntaf Cynghrair Cenedlaethol Cymru yn ôl ym 1992-93.

Hyd yn oed yn y fideo Cymdeithas Bêldroed Cymru newydd ar gyfer Cwpan y Byd 2022, mae llun Jimmy Blackie yn ymddangos, capten Tref Cwmbrân yn codi tlws Cynghrair Cenedlaethol Cymru i lawr ym Mharc Stebonheath ym 1993 ar ôl buddugoliaeth y Brain yn erbyn Llanelli i sicrhau llwyddiant yn y tymor cyntaf o’r cynghrair cenedlaethol.

Aeth y Cwmbrân arall ymlaen i chwarae yng Nghwpan Ewrop yr haf wedyn, yn curo Dinas Cork 3-2 yn y cymal gyntaf yn

Stadiwm Cwmbrân, gyda Francis Ford yn sgorio dwywaith, ar ôl i Simon King rhwydo yn gynnar o’r smotyn. Roedd mantais tair gôl gyda Chwmbrân, ond wnaeth Cork sgorio dwywaith yn yr ail hanner.

Collodd Cwmbrân 2-1 oddi cartref yn Iwerddon, eto yn ildio dwy gôl hwyr, ar ôl i gyn-chwaraewr Y Barri, Phil ‘Duffy’ McNeil agor y sgorio. Roedd e’n gyfartal dros y ddwy gêm, ond aeth Cork ymlaen i’r ail rownd yn erbyn Galatasaray oherwydd goliau oddi cartref.

Dan reolaeth Tony Wilcox, cyn-reolwr Y Barri, roedd y Brain yn llwyddiannus iawn dros y degawd wedyn, yn gwmws ar gyfer Ewrop ar nifer o weithiau, yn cynnwys chwarae yn erbyn Celtic yng Nghwpan UEFA, yn erbyn National Bucharest o Rwmania, Slovan Bratislava o Slofacia ac yn erbyn Maccabi Haifa o Israel. Roedd hefyd gêm yn erbyn Nistru Otaci o Moldofa yng Nghwpan Intertoto.

TREF CWMBRÂN

Yn y Cynghrair Cenedlaethol Cymru, roedd Cwmbrân yn agos iawn at y brig am flynyddoedd. Roedd y Brain yn pumed ym 1994-95 ac eto ym 1997-98.

Wnaethon nhw orffen yn drydedd ym 1998-99 a’r flwyddyn wedyn hefyd.

Aeth y teitl i’r wifr gyda’r Barri yn 2001, tîm Peter Nicholas yn gorffen y tymor tri phwynt yn unig o flaen Cwmbrân.

Ar dri achlysur mewn degawd, chwaraeodd Cwmbrân yn rownd derfynol Cwpan Cymru, ond wnaethon nhw golli bob un. Dwywaith collodd Cwmbrân yn erbyn Y Barri – ym 1997 a 2003, ar ôl marwolaeth sydyn Tony Wilcox, ac unwaith yn erbyn Dinas Bangor yn 2000.

Wnaeth Cwmbrân hefyd colli mewn rownd derfynol Cwpan Cynghrair Cymru, yn erbyn Caersws, yn eu unig ymddangosiad yn 2002.

Ond, ar ôl degawd yn yr hanner uchaf o’r Cynghrair Cenedlaethol, aeth pethau ar chwâl yn nhymor 2005-06. Wnaeth y gynghrair dynnu 13 o bwyntiau i ffwrdd o’r Brain, yn gadael nhw gyda dim ond 19 o bwyntiau, un lle oddi wrth y gwaelod o’r Uwchgynghrair.

Doedd dim gostyngiad pryd hynny, ond y flwyddyn wedyn, 2006-07, cafodd Cwmbrân ugain pwynt dros y tymor, ac aethon nhw i lawr i’r Cynghrair De Cymru, yn gorffen ar y gwaelod o’r cynghrair.

Cafodd Tref Cwmbrân gostyngiad eto ar ôl dau dymor, yn gorffen tymor 200809 ar waelod Adran Un o’r Cynghrair De Cymru (hynny yw, Cymru De presennol). Y flwyddyn wedyn, roedd Tref Cwmbrân,

Croesyceiliog a Chwmbrân Celtic i gyd yn yr un adran. Am hyn ymlaen, doedd Tref Cwmbrân ddim y cewri Cwmbrân.

Ers hynny, wnaeth y clwb gadael Cynghrair De Cymru ac yn chwarae ar lefel lleol yng Ngwent.

Ar hyn o bryd, maen nhw’n parhau i chwarae yn y Stadiwm, ond dwi’n deall nid yw’r eisteddle ar gael i ddefnyddio ac mae’r clwb bellach yn ceisio datblygu cyfleusterau eraill yn y dref.

Ar ôl osgoi gostyngiad llynedd, maen nhw yn chwarae yn Adran Gyntaf Gwent eto eleni, yn gobeithio eto am ddyfodol gwell. Pob lwc iddyn nhw!

Even though Cwmbran Celtic have been the pre-eminent club in Cwmbran for more than a decade, many people still think fondly of Cwmbran Town, the first ever League of Wales Champions.

Under the management of former Barry boss, Tony Wilcox, they not only won the league in 1992-93 but spent more than a decade in the upper half of the top flight, reaching three Welsh Cup finals and a League Cup Final.

In 2000-01, they pushed Barry close in the title race, with just three points separating the clubs at the end of the season.

More recently, they are now in the Gwent County League First Division, still playing at Cwmbran Stadium, but looking to develop their own facilities elsewhere in the town.
