Park District Boundaries

When determining the fees for a particular class, you must first determine whether you are “in-district” or “out-of-district.”

In-district residents are those who reside within the Barrington Park District boundaries and who pay taxes to the Barrington Park District. All others are out of district. Important: not all Village of Barrington residents are within the Barrington Park District boundaries and therefore require the out-ofdistrict rates. Please see the neighborhood lists to the right and check your tax statement to determine your residency status.

On behalf of the Park Board of Commissioners and Staff, we want to thank our Barrington Park District taxpayers for their overwhelming support on the April 4th election. This referendum project will be an incredible addition to the Park District and will provide many new opportunities. Construction is anticipated to begin August, 2024. The Park District approval process with the Village of Barrington could begin as early as October, 2023 and be tentatively approved late February, 2024. We will continue to provide updates on the project on our website at www.barringtonparkdistrict.org.

The Barrington Park Fitness Center supports participants of ALL AGES in the pursuit of a healthy and fit lifestyle. This year we introduced our FitTeen Orientation. This program is designed specifically for teens ages 14 - 17 years old who wish to join our Fitness Center. The FitTeen Orientation is led by a Park District Certified Personal Trainer, where teens will learn about gym safety, Fitness Center Etiquette and Code of Conduct, how to use the machines, form, technique and special instruction for the free weight area. Safety and enjoyment for all of our fitness patrons is the driving force behind this unique program. We hope to help teens maintain a healthy mind and body as well as establish positive habits that can help prevent injury, disease, loss of mobility and mental decline during the aging process. Establishing these habits early sets the stage toward enjoying a rich quality of life as an adult. If you have a teen that is interested in joining our Fitness Center, please contact our Health & Fitness Manager, Dana Daniel, at ddaniel@barringtonparkdistrict.org.

Mission Statement

The Barrington Park District seeks to enhance the quality of life and the environment; to acquire, conserve, and protect natural resources; and to provide health and recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities in our community. 2023 Fall Brochure I (847) 381-0687

Join the Barrington Park District for a memorable evening under the stars, camping out at Citizens Park. It’s a great way for novice campers and families to become familiar with the joys of camping without venturing too far into the wilderness! The Park District will provide grilled burgers, hot dogs, chips and a drink. The finale of the evening will be a campfire where participants will enjoy roasting marshmallows for s’mores. Coffee, juice and donuts will be served in the morning. Participants must provide their own tent and sleeping bags.

Saturday - Sunday September 9 - 10

Kent “The Outdoorsman” Hengels will be demonstrating a safe and easy way to start a campfire using dryer lint!

Not sure how to set up your tent? No worries! Kent has seen it all, from small solo tents that fit in a backpack, to large family-style tents that allow for all the luxuries in life and he is ready to help you set up and get camping!

Car to campsite transportation! No need to lug everything from your car to your campsite. Kent will take your gear (and your kiddos) to the site of their choice by way of golf cart!

Your preschooler’s mind is hard at work building the knowledge and skills it will use for a lifetime. Now, more than ever, it’s important to challenge their curious minds with activities that will keep them engaged and eager to learn! The Young Rembrandts pre-school program is specifically designed with the needs of our youngest learners in mind. We use subjects they’re familiar with such as animals and toys, as well as their favorite learning tools to enhance social and conflict resolution skills while improving listening, finemotor skills and time-on-task. Give your preschooler the information they’re hungry for and be amazed by what they’ll create! (Min/Max: 5/10). Instructor: Young Rembrandts Staff.

Elementary Drawing

AGES: 6 - 12 YEARS

Our elementary learners are at the crucial time of development when they decide whether they’re good at something or not. This decision will affect not only the rest of their academic career, but their lifetime learning as well. The Young Rembrandts elementary program provides the tools this age group needs to succeed at drawing! Our program works because it’s not only hands-on and visual, it’s simply fun. Add to this our innovative guided instruction, topics that kids love and relate to, and instructors that know how to reach this group and we take kids from thinking they’re not “artists”, to knowing they can achieve this and everything else they put their minds to. (Min/Max: 5/15). ABOUT THE INSTUCTOR

Chris Steinmetz’ career, in LA, took off quickly as he spent his first three sessions working with Paul Simon (Graceland), John Denver, and David Lee Roth. Within a year, Producer Michael Wagener took notice of Steinmetz and hired him to engineer many classic 80s hard rock albums. During his time in LA, Steinmetz also did freelance work for many other bands such as Kiss (with Producer Bob Ezrin) and Alice in Chains - as well as many feature films.

In 1996, Steinmetz moved back to his native Chicago to be closer to family. He served as Chief Engineer at Chicago Trax before beginning a 10-year run as Senior Music Producer/Engineer at the Chicago Recording Company. Provided with access to Chicago’s growing music scene, Steinmetz’s normal clientele began to integrate hard rock and hip-hop. Between 2004 and 2008 alone, he received credits on albums by Kanye West, Disturbed, Rihanna, Twista, Lil Jon, Usher, E-dub, and Jin with all recordings going platinum or gold. During this time, Steinmetz also helped to pioneer the field of music mixing in 5.1 Surround Sound.

Chris Steinmetz created his own label, Stonecutter Records, in 2006 out of the desire to “advance artists to the next level in their careers and get them the exposure they deserve.” The label’s first project, Acoustic Chicago, is a compilation of 13 Chicago artists and features their music in an acoustic format to highlight songwriting ability.

Currently, Steinmetz splits his time between working as a freelance Music Producer/Engineer/Mixer, running his label Stonecutter Records and his newest creation, Stonecutter Studios.

As the Fitness Center is an adult facility, teen guests ages 14 – 17 years old are invited to participate ONLY after completing a mandatory Fit Teen Orientation with a Park District Certified Personal Trainer. Failure to follow the behavior and etiquette expectations outlined in this Etiquette and Code of Conduct will result in consequences including but not limited to: being sent home for the day, suspension for a determined length of time or permanent dismissal from the Fitness Center. These consequences are at the discretion of the Health & Fitness Manager.

• Show respect to all Park District staff, Fitness Center members and equipment.

• Wear appropriate clothing, including a shirt and closed-toe shoes. Bare feet, sandals, flip-flops, Crocs™, high heels and boots are not allowed. Guests must wear gym shoes at all times on the Fitness Floor.

• Use equipment for its intended purpose. For clarification on how to use the equipment or to inquire about an equipment orientation, please see a member of the Fitness staff.

• Be aware of other participants on the Fitness Floor and allow others to “work in”, returning settings to previous user’s setup. Rests between sets should take place off the machine.

• Keep equipment out of aisles and walkways.

• When using the stretching area, ensure that your body and equipment are not encroaching on the walkway. The stretching area is for exercising and not for congregating to socialize.

Reality-Based Self-Defense for Teens & Adults

AGES: 16 YEARS AND UP

Have you ever worried what you would do if you were the target of criminal violence? Could you protect yourself or the ones you love? If the above questions have ever been a concern, you will find both the skills and understanding with this training!

This program is tailored to busy individuals that do not have time to commit to formal marital arts training. It is a reality-based self-defense system blended with the sciences of anatomy and sports physiology.

All training is done with the following assumptions:

• Your attacker(s) are bigger, stronger, or have weapons.

• You are already being attacked (and your options to get away are gone).

It is a simple, safe, and devastatingly effective program using intuitive movements that anyone can do regardless of physical ability. It is slow paced with minimal stress. Students will learn to accurately target vulnerable structures and areas of the human body, build mental sight pictures and muscle memory – all with the goal to recall and use when it’s most needed.

No prior martial arts training is required.

This class is taught by Sensei Michael Christesen with over 30 years of martial arts instruction that includes Shotokan Karate, Jeet Kune Do, Japanese Jujitsu and Reality Based Self-Defense.

Pickle Spears - Up/Down Split Pickleball League

AGES: 16 YEARS AND UP

DO I HAVE TO BE ANY GOOD? - All skill levels welcome, but players must know how to keep score.

ROLLIN’ SOLO - Players sign up weekly, as individuals, and will be paired with different teammates throughout the night. One of the best parts of Pickleball is the community of players. What better way to meet new Pickleballers than by playing with new partners and opponents every game?

LET’S PLAY (PICKLE)BALL! - 6 games will be played each night. Games will last for a total of 12 minutes. There will be a small break between games, and a longer break mid-way through the night.

RUN UP THE SCORE - There will be no sets, it’s all points. Try and score as many as you can before time runs out!

GHERKIN GAME - One game each night will be designated as the Gherkin Game, where points will be doubled for each team!

THE UP / DOWN - The team with the most points when the time is up will go up a court and split partners. The losing team will go down a court and split partners. This will lead to players at a similar skill level playing together.

THE SPLIT - When you go up or down and split, the player from each team who finished on the serving side (right side on your respective court) will swap sides.

ADD ‘EM UP - Scores will be tallied up after each night, and accumulate throughout the season. The more weeks you sign up for, the more points you can accumulate!

FINISHING STRONG - The top 16 players will qualify for the playoffs on 11/7; players ranked #1 - #8 will compete in the Real Dill Division, and players ranked #9 - #16 will compete in the Bread & Butter Bracket. Winners for each level will win a prize!

Fee: $12/$16 per week

Sports Tips from Coach Kent

Tip #1 – Have Fun!

Sports should be all about fun. Our goal is to teach them the basics, but more importantly, make sure they are having fun! If they don’t have fun playing a sport for the first time, there is a chance that they will never want to play that sport again in the future.

Tip #2 – Try Something New!

Kids should be exposed to a variety of sports and they’ll quickly let you know which ones they prefer. Plus, you will find that what you learn in one sport will often translate to another sport. More often than not, stronger athletes are the ones that didn’t specialize in one sport at a young age but played a multitude of sports and learned helpful skills from each.

Tip #3 – If it’s Not for Them, No Need to Worry!

Our classes are reasonably priced and only last a handful of weeks. That way, you can sign up for a single session, and if it’s not for them, you are not committed to an entire season of that sport. Also, our coaches will have extra equipment on-hand so you aren’t spending money on equipment that they may never touch again.

Tip #4 – Team vs. Individual Sports.

A majority of parents sign their kids up for sports not just for the athletic experience, but for the social experience as well. However, not every child will benefit from playing sports on a team. Sign your child up for both team and individual sports to see which environment they like best.

Tip #5 – Have Questions? Contact Me!

I have been the Athletic Supervisor here at the Barrington Park District for over 10 years. If you need help finding the right program for your child or have any other questions about our athletic programs, please feel free to contact me at khengels@barringtonparkdistrict org or (847) 304-5273.

2023 Fall Brochure I (847) 381-0687

The Barrington Park District offers a variety of Challenge Programs designed to meet the needs of a wide diversity of groups. All of our programs are designed to bring together or strengthen your group, and are tailored to meet your specific needs and goals. We believe that participants absorb more when they are physically, socially, intellectually and emotionally involved in the learning process. Our trained facilitators engage groups in activities that allow the participants to take ownership of their learning. Each program allows time for the participants to discuss the experience and relate the learning outcomes back to “real world” situations.

Teams Challenge Course: A variety of problem-based initiatives awaits the team as they are given challenges that might use ropes, cables, platforms, boards or a 12-foot wall. All challenges require teamwork from every member in order to accomplish the goal. Individual strengths are highlighted and the small group size allows for participation by everyone. These challenges take place on or near the ground and require focus, cooperation and trust. Over 20 stations are spread throughout the wooded trails.

Cooperative Games: Learn team-building skills while playing fun, active games. Cooperation, communication, strategy and good sportsmanship are stressed. Great for younger-aged groups!
