2025-2026 School Year Preschool

About Us

For over four decades, the BPD Preschool has been built on the understanding that your child’s happiness and growth are very important. We offer a play-based program with an emphasis on social, emotional, cognitive, physical and language development. Teachers encourage curiosity and strive to develop a love for learning. Each preschool day has a balanced schedule designed to address all developmental domains important to your child’s growth and development. We encourage children to socialize, interact cooperatively and gain independence so they can reach their full potential. With the support of the amazing Park District facilities, parks and amenities, there is so much for your child to explore!

Curriculum/Facility

The preschool program includes both group and individual activities throughout the day that are play- based. Meaningful play encourages curiosity, discovery and problem solving. In our classrooms, you will find busy, happy children engaged in math, art, science, language, literacy, dramatic play, music and motor activities. Our school uses the Jolly Phonics© program (also used by School District 220) with all classes to help children learn letter sounds. We follow the Illinois Early Learning Standards and the State of Illinois DCFS guidelines. We offer 3 classrooms, a large motor room, gym and a fenced-in playground dedicated to the preschool program. Our rooms remain securely locked during school hours. Each classroom has a bathroom with a child-size toilet and sink.

Staff

There are two teachers in each classroom with a maximum of sixteen to twenty children based on the class. Teachers work as a team. Every preschool teacher is professionally qualified and dedicated to the education and development of each child enrolled in the program. Teachers keep current in teaching methods through training and attendance at educational seminars throughout the year.

Dance

Do you love to tumble and dance? Then this is the class for you. Work on perfecting your tricks: back bends, cartwheels, hand stands, dive rolls and many more! Learn how to combine these tricks with dance movement for an unforgettable experience.

AMY NELSON is excited to share her passion for dance and focus on continuing growth at any age with the Barrington Park District! She grew up dancing in Arlington Heights and at John Hersey High School followed by receiving a dance scholarship to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville where she completed a dance minor in 2013. Amy focuses on continuing to grow her own skills and knowledge which has led her to various continuing education classes and workshops, including the Nan Giordano Certification Program and Yoga Alliance RYS 200-Hour Certification. Her favorite styles are Ballet and Contemporary. She looks forward to dancing with each of her students this year!

CHRISTINA PATTRAS is eager to be a new part of the Barrington Park District as a Dance Instructor! Since she was a little girl, Christina has absolutely loved the way in which dance aided in her self-expression and built up her confidence. She has previously taught dance at another park district but is beyond excited to bring her love of dance to Barrington. While she finds beauty in every style, she has a soft spot for both poms and hip-hop. Being part of the Poms Team in school was one of her top dance memories, and hip-hop was the style that got her truly invested in the art of dance! In her free time, you can find Christina going to the gym, practicing yoga, volunteering with an animal rescue, and spending time with her family, boyfriend, and friends.

Reset and Relax: An Evening of Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra

Presented by instructors Julie and Karen!

Take a break from the demands of daily life and join yoga instructors Julie and Karen for an evening dedicated to deep relaxation and renewal. This special session begins with Restorative Yoga, a restful practice that emphasizes stillness and gentle, passive stretching. Using props such as blankets, blocks and bolsters, your body will be fully supported as you ease into each pose, allowing the muscles to relax, the heart rate to slow and the nervous system to shift into a state of calm. This soothing experience is ideal for balancing the intensity of busy lifestyles and promoting physical and mental healing.

Following the restorative portion, the class will transition into Yoga Nidra, a guided meditation often called “Yogic Sleep.” While resting comfortably - feel free to bring your favorite blanket from home - you’ll be led through a sequence of verbal cues designed to bring conscious awareness to each part of the body. This ancient practice helps release stress and tension, offering profound rest and clarity. Everyone who attends will be entered into a raffle for a FREE gift! (Min/Max: 6/23).

Reality-Based Self-Defense for Teens & Adults

AGES: 16 YEARS AND UP

Have you ever worried what you would do if you were the target of criminal violence? Could you protect yourself or the ones you love? If the above questions have ever been a concern, you will find both the skills and understanding with this training!

This program is tailored to busy individuals that do not have time to commit to formal marital arts training. It is a reality-based self-defense system blended with the sciences of anatomy and sports physiology.

All training is done with the following assumptions:

• Your attacker(s) are bigger, stronger or have weapons.

• You are already being attacked (and your options to get away are gone).

It is a simple, safe and devastatingly effective program using intuitive movements that anyone can do regardless of physical ability. It is slow paced with minimal stress. Students will learn to accurately target vulnerable structures and areas of the human body, build mental sight pictures and muscle memory – all with the goal to recall and use when it’s most needed.

No prior martial arts training is required.

This class is taught by Sensei Michael Christesen with over 30 years of martial arts instruction that includes Shotokan Karate, Jeet Kune Do, Japanese Jujitsu and Reality Based Self-Defense.

HEAD COACHES ALWAYS NEEDED AND APPRECIATED!

As our programs grow, so does our need for coaches. The more coaches we have, the more teams can be formed and the more each individual child can participate!

Job Description: The coach should be a sincere, caring individual who can share a few hours a week for practices and games. He/she should also have some knowledge of the sport, serve as a positive role model who encourages good sportsmanship, be safety conscious, have patience and enthusiasm, and most of all, make sure everyone is having a great time!

Benefits: Is there any better feeling than knowing that you will be rewarded throughout the season as the kids learn from you as well as spending time with your child and being a positive influence on your whole team? If that isn’t enough, each head coach will receive a team plaque.

Youth League Coaches’ Meeting: All volunteers will be required to attend a coaches’ meeting on 11/18, where we will give you some guidelines and an informational packet that will help you while coaching your Park District team.

To Volunteer: Fill out a Coaching Application form available at the Fitness and Recreation Center front desk, or online at www.barringtonparkdistrict.org. If you have any questions, please contact Kent Hengels at (847) 304-5273 or khengels@barringtonparkdistrict.org.

Come From Away at the Paramount

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1

Enjoy a little slice of Broadway right in our own backyard. We are traveling to Paramount Theater in Aurora to see Come From Away. Welcome to the rock - a safe space at the end of the world. Nominated for 7 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. 9/11/2001… 38 airplanes, 6,579 stranded passengers from 100 countries converge in 1 small town in Newfoundland. Before they have a clue, what’s happening, thousands of passengers are diverted to the town of Gander, doubling its population and putting the townsfolk to the test. Based on astonishing true events and hundreds of hours of interviews with the townspeople and the “come from aways” (aka stranded passengers) who were welcomed with open arms, you’ll experience the spirit of small-town generosity that helped the healing begin. Full of songs that celebrate kinship and grit, the Come From Away’s message is simple and significant: in this day and age, it’s more important than ever for kindness to reach across the borders. Phantom of the Opera

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28

Join us as we travel to the beautiful Cadillac Palace Theater to see one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history. Spaces are limited so don’t miss your chance to “listen to the music of the night.” Phantom of the Opera is back to thrill Chicago audiences. The Barrington Park District offers a variety of Challenge Programs designed to meet the needs of a wide diversity of groups. All of our programs are designed to bring together or strengthen your group, and are tailored to meet your specific needs and goals. We believe that participants absorb more when they are physically, socially, intellectually and emotionally involved in the learning process. Our trained facilitators engage groups in activities that allow the participants to take ownership of their learning. Each program allows time for the participants to discuss the experience and relate the learning outcomes back to “real world” situations.

Teams Challenge Course: A variety of problem-based initiatives awaits the team as they are given challenges that might use ropes, cables, platforms, boards or a 12-foot wall. All challenges require teamwork from every member in order to accomplish the goal. Individual strengths are highlighted and the small group size allows for participation by everyone. These challenges take place on or near the ground and require focus, cooperation and trust. Over 20 stations are spread throughout the wooded trails.

Cooperative Games: Learn team-building skills while playing fun, active games. Cooperation, communication, strategy and good sportsmanship are stressed. Great for younger-aged groups!
