James March CEO BAROSSA AUSTRALIA

Welcome to Barossa Vintage Festival 2023, Barossa Australia is delighted to be the custodian of this wonderful event.

75 years of history precedes the 2023 Festival, and our team acknowledges the communities that have contributed to the Festival in that time. The merger between Barossa Grape & Wine Association and Tourism Barossa Inc. in January 2022 to form Barossa Australia has empowered us all to truly embrace the Festival theme “Old Roots, New Ways”.

My great hope is that this theme will balance our responsibility to the traditions of the Festival but will also enable an evolution that guarantees its sustainability and relevance for the future. The Festival is arguably the most important event on the Barossa calendar. It is important for our communities and enables those that don’t live in the region to experience a little of what makes Barossa, Barossa.

We are pleased that Release Creative have been engaged as our Festival partner bringing their experience in the field and their own, direct Barossa experiences to this year’s Festival.

I am delighted that we can present Barossa Vintage Festival 2023 and I look forward to the celebration of harvest and our wonderful region.

A Front Cover Story

The vision behind our hero image campaign was dreamt up by local graphic designers Emily Hay (of Barossa Australia), Erica Brady and Kim Jericho (of Brady & Co). Our program cover design references the original festival program cover looping in a celebration of aging with joy, grace, and glamour with a contemporary nod. The model for this campaign is the 1953 Barossa Vintage Festival’s Miss Tanunda, Jillian Wehr. Styling was executed by Sharmonie Cockayne, hair and makeup was completed by Gemma Vendetta. Photography credit: Claudio Rashella.

Ben Patten HEAD OF DESTINATION AND VISITOR ENGAGEMENT, BAROSSA AUSTRALIA

Barossa Vintage Festival is important to community and to our visitors. It shows a little of the Barossa spirit through events such as the Ziegenmarkt and the Vintage Parade as well as the 70+ events that our businesses are hosting. Over 70,000 festival-goers converge on Australia’s premier wine and food region every two years, and we look forward to welcoming them and ensuring the best possible experience.

As the custodians of the Festival, our theme of “Old Roots, New Ways” speaks to our approach to the delivery of the program. Our outlook as a region and our great hope is that all visitors are as enamoured with Barossa as we are. A place of strong tradition, resilient communities, of outstanding wine, food, and experiences that almost a million visitors a year are immersed in. The global pandemic has been disruptive for us all, Barossa Vintage Festival 2023 is a celebration of the hard work that has gone before and the promise of what is to come. I can think of no better way to acknowledge Australia’s longest running regional Festival. Welcome to Barossa.

Ruth Blythman FESTIVAL DIRECTOR, RELEASE CREATIVE

Flicking through the pages of every festival program since 1947, it is clear that each festival has been produced with passion, creativity, resilience, and Barossa’s quintessential artisan skills on display. It’s little surprise Barossa Vintage Festival fills locals with a sense of pride and visitors with wonderment and an everlasting connection to the region. There is so much human value in passing on this rich tradition of culture, tourism, arts, and all the life lessons that come along with putting on a large-scale community led festival.

For the 75th Anniversary of the Vintage Festival, it feels fittings to honour the traditional spirit of the event by ushering it into the next chapter of its evolution. I’m incredibly proud of the 2023 program that has been achieved through the support of our team, event producers, volunteer committees, partners and broader community.

As with every festival prior, the 2023 Vintage Festival will be a celebration of community spirit as we collectively reap the rewards of labour with locals and visitors alike in true Barossan style.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

During your relaxed dinner at the awardwinning Novotel Resort the night before, rock, paper, scissors for who gets up with the kids on Day One to watch the sunrise at Steingarten. Then self-drive to southern Barossa and visit one of our gorgeous Reservoirs. Hop in a kayak and then make your way to the Whispering Wall engulfed in native bushland. Keep your eyes peeled for kangaroos and echidnas!

FEATURED EVENT: I SEE YOU LIKE THIS

PRESENTED BY

In the afternoon head to St Hugo for a leisurely wine tasting, then walk across to the Jacob’s Creek Visitor’s Centre, to take part in ‘I See You Like This’. Listen to live music, relax into a deckchair to munch down on some treats from the on-site food trucks. Enjoy a peaceful stroll through native bushland back to your Novotel accommodation. Try your luck at a hit of golf in the morning before making your way to the next destination.

‘I See You Like This’ by artist Jessica Wilson, is an interactive photo studio event, pairing child and guardian in an experience that turns the camera back and allows children to see their guardians as subjects through the lens of their own imagination. The experience includes the opportunity for the child to adorn their guardian with props, and to work with an artist and local photographer, to capture a professional portrait which will be on display during Festival days.

Tanunda

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

PRESENTED BY

Spend the day exploring Tanunda by foot and kick things off with a stroll down Murray Sreet, Tanunda. Grab your morning cup of coffee at one of Tanunda’s many cafes that pull enviable latte art as you make your way to Goat Square for the locally loved ‘Ziegenmarkt’. Pick up a breaky roll (and second coffee!) between auction bids at this 1800’s style live market auction. As the theatre of the auction winds down late morning, walk to the Barossa Vintage Festival Hub. Buy bespoke, artisan products and produce at Barossa Made Market. Around the corner, an art exhibition is just a three-minute walk away (we timed it) at the Barossa Regional Gallery. Take your time absorbing the 70+ entries into the Barossa Vintage Festival Art Prize. Wrap your perfect festival day up by settling into an evening at the Festival Hub. Drink and eat with friends under the stars reflecting on an idyllic day.

1949

Daughter of Bacchus competition changed to Barossa Valley Vintage Queen competition. Grape Picking Championships introduced. Car races and motorcycling races held. Tanunda hosted a motor cycle circus and chariot races as part of the Saturday evening entertainment.

1950

A rodeo; the Australian Rough-Riders’ Association championships was held in Angaston.

FEATURED EVENT: ZIEGENMARKT

Roll up to Goat Square, Tanunda to witness one of the Festival’s most boisterous and exciting events: a live produce and livestock market. Ziegenmarkt has been adored by locals since its inauguration into the festival program in 1979. Ziegenmarkt will once again see the reliving of the first town market. Billy Goat Square will ring with the hustle and bustle of a traditional market day as it recaptures the atmosphere of a bygone era. A quintessential Vintage Festival event featuring Barossa wine and food (produce as well as ready-to-eat), a live auction and plenty of family friendly entertainment.

FRIDAY

Seppeltsfield

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Spend the day exploring the iconic Seppeltsfield Road and its surrounds. Start in Greenock by devouring a mouth-watering breakfast at one of the local cafes. Then prepare your wallet as you fall in love with the art, craft, homewares and natural beauty products on offer in this part of the world. With your artisanal products in hand, head to one of the award-winning restaurants and book your afternoon gin or wine tasting while you’re waiting for dessert. If you are feeling more spontaneous, then don’t worry about the booking and just head to one of many cellar doors nestled in the rolling hills of Seppeltsfield. Finish off the day at the spectacular Sunset at Seppeltsfield Road event before heading to one of Seppeltsfield Road’s accommodation options, from luxury offerings to beautifully restored historic vineyard cottages, cosy bed and breakfasts or family-friendly log cabins.

FEATURED EVENT: SUNSET AT SEPPELTSFIELD ROAD

Overlook the vineyards as the sun sets over Seppeltsfield Road’s Avenue of Palms at what is poised to be one of the region’s most iconic and unforgettable experiences.  Settle into the afternoon on the road as we bring together more than 18 wineries, distilleries, food, art and music and you tip your hat off to this ‘money can’t buy experience’.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

With a 50-minute drive from Adelaide, there’s little time for the obligatory ‘are we there yet?’ from the back seats, before arriving at your destination in Nuriootpa. The Vintage Festival Parade boasts its reputation as the longest Parade in the Southern Hemisphere! Find your patch early and admire the creativity and quirk of this year’s floats. Stop in at Vine Inn Barossa for lunch as the family debate the favourite float of the Festival. Best to close your eyes and point to decide what to order from the Vine Inn Barossa menu given the extensive regional produce featured in their meals. Check into your four-star accommodation on site situated just 350 metres from the nearest local winery before seeing what the township has put on a show for this year’s festivities. We recommend making a stop into Provenance for a tasting, coffee or pizza before the day is out.

FEATURED EVENT: THE PARADE

The Vintage Festival parade has seen crowds line our streets since 1948. Taking place from Tanunda to Nuriootpa in 2023, over its many years, awards have been given to the best floats with sections including town float, floral float, winery, humorous, commercial, and best decorated grape wagon. Could we call The Parade the Barossa Vintage Festival’s Magnus Opus? Piece de resistance? Or perhaps the jewel in the Barossa Vintage Festival crown? We’ll leave that for the public to decide, but this year, we’re turning up with our picnic basket, rug and family to enjoy the tremendous work fashioned by the entrants. See who swoons the judges and wins perpetual bragging rights by taking home the award for best float in their category.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

Start the day by taking a drive through Riesling country in the stunning Eden Valley. Surrounded by rolling hills and stands of ancient red gums, you’ll see why Eden Valley is known as the ‘Garden of Grapes and Gums’. Absorb the kaleidoscope of colours, patterns, church spires and historical homes that encapsulate the region.

Next, if you’ve come with the family, be sure to make a stop at Angaston. The kids will be ready to stretch their legs, and there’s no better place for them to burn off some energy than at Barossa Adventure Station which flaunts a multi-level play space, skate ramp, fitness station, a zip wire, a 1km mountain bike loop (hire your bikes from the nearby Angaston Hardware store if you have not bought your own). End your festival experience with a drive to Thorn-Clarke for our official festival wrap-up party, Paddock to Plate.

FEATURED EVENT: PADDOCK TO PLATE

What better way to wind down from the 75th Anniversary of the Barossa Vintage Festival than a new release red tasting and char-grilled lamb nestled in the landscape of Eden Valley? Indulge in a tasting of seven luxury reds, warm up by the fire bowl and immerse your senses in everything around you. Drink in the spectacular views, toe-tapping music and food to warm the soul. Thorn-Clarke Wines are family-owned, Estate grown, sustainability accredited and focused and it’s all here to see and enjoy!  This is a family-friendly event to unwind and reflect on our heritage while drinking wines that will see us through to the next chapter in our journey. Tickets include a Thorn-Clarke glass, seven tastings and a Char-grilled Lamb Yiros. Bring a deck chair, your friends, and your family or just come alone and mingle with our team.

Scarecrows

There are few things more telling of a Barossa Vintage on the horizon than scarecrows appearing throughout the region. A festival favourite since 1995, see these straw-filled personalities springing up as families in fields, appearing as winemakers in cellar doors, and surprising you in all shapes and sizes in shops and front yards throughout the region.

Whether you want to build your own, or find them along the trail, join us to celebrate the creativity, ingenuity, and artistry of the community, with straw-stuffed into weird, wacky and wonderful characters for you to discover.

Download your scarecrow trail map at barossavintagefestival.com.au to make the most of this free, self-guided tour.

Rockford Wines and the Young Ambassador Program

Rockford Wines is a family business committed to keeping the best of Australia’s traditional wine trade alive. One of Rockford’s founding principles was to always contribute to the Barossa community in both capital and labour; ensuring its ongoing health and viability.

When the opportunity arose to become major partner of the Young Ambassador Program we were pleased to take it up.

Supporting the emerging and future leaders of our region is another way to safeguard our community and provide opportunities and mentorship to the next generation. We look forward to the enthusiasm, commitment and innovation that the Young Ambassadors put forward this Vintage Festival and into the future.
