Refresh your home with paint There are many different styles of homes in the Barossa, and experienced painter and decorator, Craig Marston has worked in most during his 25 years in the industry.

He believes choice of paint colour begins with a discussion of likes and dislike as he and his clients look at the era of a house for inspiration.

“You really have to look at the style of house when you’re choosing colours. For a modern home, the colours might be more into the off whites and brown hues.... the neutrals, the brown hues and the grey hues. That’s the fashion at the moment.

“But, say you go into an old bungalow style home, the colour scheme there will be a lot different. You might go with the colours used back when the house was built. Then you get into decorating cornices and ceiling roses... you try and highlight them to suit the era of the house.”

“Plus, the colour has to go with all your furniture, floor coverings and curtains. You have to work with what they have... sometimes you don’t have much to work with, but sometimes you have. Some people know what they want, some people have no idea. I just like to bounce ideas around and find out what they like and what they don’t like,” said Craig.

Using colour cards to help choose a colour range in the first instance, Craig then likes to mix sample pots on site and, after painting the colour on the wall, people can see how the colour works in the natural light of their own homes.

Whilst choices seem endless, Craig is quick to point out that everyone has different tastes and keeping up with fashions isn’t always the way to go.

“What I like, doesn’t mean it’s what they like... you bounce off ideas. This is what it really comes down to, if the customer really likes something, do it.”

Autumn Home Ideas Old beauty returned to grace The old stone beauty set behind the Angaston Oval has been returned to grace through the vision of owner/ builders, Kim and Ian Mathieson.

The 1900’s home captured the interest of many in the town, but none willing to undertake the extensive renovations, with the building requiring more than a simple facelift.

The pair discovered the house after deciding to relocate from their busy Sydney lifestyle to a quieter place in the Barossa three years ago.

Kim was overseas on a working trip and had Ian fly over to view the house.

“The old houses that have character are either not worth buying or the ones that are nice go quickly so it was worth a look,” Kim said.

“Our initial thoughts were it needed an awful lot of work but I liked the floor plan and the romance of the stone house was really beautiful.”

Since purchasing the house, they have transformed nearly every room, including the demolition and reconstruction of some areas.

Ian, a qualified fitter and turner with a range of other trade skills, and Kim, a skilled painter and decorator, were able to undertake much of the work on their own.

Kim managed the project while Ian resigned from full time work to carry out the renovations.

The pair rented a house in Nuriootpa and set themselves a five-month deadline to complete the work necessary to live in the house.

After the initial clean-up, Kim and Ian salvaged what they could before deciding to demolish the kitchen, bathroom, outdoor laundry area and start over.

While they were aware of damage to the building including rising salt damp in the walls, the couple were in for a challenge when they discovered the extent of the repair work needed.

Kim and Ian discovered a second ceiling had been built under the original after it had started to sag, and was putting too much pressure on the load-bearing walls.

They also had to lay new sub floors, coming at a considerable expense, before adding new tiling.

Planning out the renovation carefully, Kim put together design briefs for each room, sourcing ideas from magazines and websites.

As they discovered during the renovation, some rooms were able to fill the design briefs accurately while others needed a lot of fine-tuning.

The renovation is a work in progress, and while they are still building some areas including an outdoor studio space, they are finally able to celebrate their hard work.

“It has been a journey. We really have achieved a lot and we are only now toasting our efforts,” Kim said.

Autumn Home Ideas An inspiring room Kim has felt drawn to the kitchen following its renovation, planned by herself and carried out by local cabinet maker, Mr Mark Feltus.

Kim was able to fulfil much of her design brief, and since its completion, has felt inspired to cook more than ever before, even making jams and other preserves in the kitchen.

“I am drawn into this room and this space,” Kim said.

The kitchen appears large and open with light coloured walls and cupboards, while the splashes of red throughout the room bring it to life.

An old fashioned red cooker adds character to the room and a red flower canvas painted by

Kim gives the room a personal touch.

Paying close attention to detail, Kim and Ian marked the floor with a square of tape and walked around it for a weekend before Ian constructed a steel island to go in its place.

An open plate rack was also installed above the dishwasher to make it easy to put dishes away and built near the exit closest to the dining room for easy navigation.

“I had done a lot of thinking about how I was going to use the space and what would be most practical.”

Ian even spent weeks chiselling the channels on the walls to give the room a more elegant look.

Dear Erica, My Zucchini plants are getting a white powder on their leaves. I’ve been fertilising with Seasol.

Is there anything that can be done?

Jodie L. Answer: You have powdery mildew which starts occurring usually late summer, early autumn.

Try to water in the morning, rather than in the evening, as fungus needs moisture to grow and any moisture left on the leaves dries quickly during the day, but not at night.

Spray the leaves with lime sulphur or kelp powder on a cooler day, in the cool of the day, i.e. evening.

Dear Erica, We have white fly in the lemon tree and also in our capital pears.

I have tried various chemicals, but cannot get rid of them. What do you use?

Nathan P. Answer: White fly is very persistent and attacks citrus Ash trees and ornamental pears.

Both Baythroid and Confidor are very effective in getting rid of white fly.

You may find white fly still there after spraying with Confidor, but after a week it is gone.

Dear Erica, My Phalaenopsis orchids have developed bleached spots on their leaves. What is the cause?

Marie M. Answer: Your orchids must be too close to a window or getting too much sun.

They like medium to good light indoors or a shady spot outdoors.

If you have them outdoors be aware, they will have to come inside as it gets cold, as they are a tropical plant and can’t handle low temperatures.

Dear Erica, If I buy a number of potted trees, is it alright to put Blood and Bone fertiliser in the hole?

Malcolm.

Answer: With a potted tree, you could put Blood and Bone in the hole, but far better is to put old compost in your hole.

Compost holds the moisture and acts like a sponge and roots love growing in old, rotted down compost.

Barossa Nursery sells “Groganic”, a wonderful compost with a soil wetter and beneficial bacteria (x-facta) included.

Dig your hole twice as deep as you need, put a generous shovel of compost down the hole, then backfill with compost and garden soil.

Create a nice well and water in with Seasol (a root stimulant) and apply Seasol again a week later.

After that you can top dress your tree with Blood and Bone, which will leach down and reach the roots in a dilute form.

Trees have so many beneficial purposes, they are great in your garden and great for the planet.

Here is a list of a few awesome trees: Wonderful large shade trees include Ash trees, Claret and Golden Elm trees, Golden and Chinese and Plane trees with their soft, large mint green leaves and lovely spotted trunk.

Pistachio Chinensis (and there are some good examples in Angaston) produce brilliant red autumn leaves.

Gleditsia “Sunburst” having a beautiful fine ferny lime coloured foliage in summer, produces such brilliant gold autumn foliage it looks as if the tree is alight!

There is a large range of incredibly beautiful small trees.

“Cercis Forest pansy” has large purple brown leaves in spring and summer and in autumn turn yellow, burgundy, lavender and purple.

Crepe myrtles, flowering all summer in colours of white, pink, coral, red and purple, has beautiful orange and gold autumn foliage.

The large Prunus family are very popular and lovely trees, the favourite being Prunus Blieriama or double flowering plum.

It has gorgeous pink double blossom in spring, followed by attractive bronze foliage.

English Hawthorns are small trees with attractive leaves and small rose-like flowers in pink or crimson in spring.

Crab apples produce beautiful blossom in spring and attractive bunches of miniature apples in autumn.

Don’t blow the budget

Tanunda’s Mr James Bartsch, from Bartsch Builders says there are hidden pitfalls people need to be aware of when building or renovating your home.

Gone are the days when builders just built.

Today, with the strong emphasis on energy efficient homes, understanding all aspects of the industry is necessary to meet growing demands.

For Tanunda based builder, Mr James Bartsch, knowledge is key, “you almost have to be a professor in every angle now,” he said.

The Bartsch Builders director has been in the industry for 43 years and is one of the longest serving builders in the Barossa.

“You can’t just be a scruffy tradesman with his backside hanging out of his jeans,” he laughed.

“You have to be qualified to give clients advice, you really have to do your research and know your stuff,” he said.

With a wealth of experience gained during his lifetime, James has seen the many traps unsuspecting homeowners face.

He refers to the movie “The Money Pit” and says it can be very true for inexperienced home renovators.

“There’s always a risk, when doing your own renovations, that things are left out of the budget.

Quite often people don’t have the ability to do things cost effectively. They get into a bit of trouble, might need to get someone in to do it for them and they haven’t allowed for it. The budget is critical.”

When employing the services of a builder, people need to get everything included in the quote to avoid surprises. It’s the case for renovations and additions, as well as new houses.

“We say, this is what it costs to do the whole job.

Then we talk about what they want to leave out or do themselves, at least then they have a figure in mind which is realistic to complete that project.

They won’t get into trouble financially,” he said.

City project builders have been known to leave mandatory requirements out, saying the building will comply when the client puts insulation in at their own expense, for example. This is a situation James has seen many times.

“People need to spend another month or so

before they actually sign up... to make sure they have everything included. It even pays to have a soil report done independently so they can give it to the builder when they’re getting a price - then they know exactly what the foundations are going to cost,” he said.

Another concern for James is the health risk posed by asbestos.

“When people renovate their own home, quite often they’ll do some of the demolition work and put themselves and their family’s health at risk.

There’s so many hidden places in the house that contain asbestos, it’s not always obvious.”

“A lot of it was used for copper hot water pipes, but the biggest catch is the old glued down vinyl floor coverings. They’re full of asbestos and the most dangerous type,” said James.

James has seen external building fashions come full circle. Major advances in technology have been made to achieve the mandatory six star energy rating now needed for new homes.

Solar panel efficiency, the use of double glazing and improved insulation products; low energy lighting, instant gas hot water systems and the introduction of hebel aerated concrete panels are all contributing to more cost effective, energy efficient and sustainable homes.

Keeping up with the latest products, thinking ahead to avoid problems and dealing with different personalities can be daunting at times, but James enjoys his work.

“It’s a constant challenge. You’re dealing with a lot of emotions across the board. With tradespeople, Mondays are never as good as Fridays... Sometimes things don’t go exactly as they should. You need to evaluate and make constant decisions.

“Basically, you’re handcrafting something out of literally millions of different components. Where else do you actually build something that’s never been put together like this before? You only have one chance at it. You have to become an expert in problem solving,” he said.

Get your cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli in for picking through the winter. Plant the first batch now and then every few weeks for a continuous supply.

“Fresh is always the best and people are beginning to see just how easy it is to grow your own. It’s a fantastic time to be out in the garden,” he said.

Autumn is the time to plant and Barossa Nursery’s Daniel Bartsch is excited about how gardens are evolving in the region.

“Colour is back which is fantastic to see,” he said.

“We’ve done grasses and cordylines for so long now, but we’re finding it’s going back to colour; so we’re selling a lot of perennials which put on an awesome show through the bulk of the year. Things like salvias and penstemons... all those ‘pretties’ are back,” he said.

Daniel said Autumn is a great time to get out into the garden, whether it’s fertilising the roses for that last flush of blooms or trimming and tidying up after the heatwave.

“Now’s the time to trim all the scorched bits off your plants...it’s safe to do that now as long as we don’t get any more 40 degree days!

“Also, after all that rain we had, you can start spraying the weeds now as well,” he said.

And for those considering lawn, it’s the ideal time to plant either instant or seed, whilst soils are still warm.

It’s also the perfect opportunity to help existing lawns recover after the long summer.
