Barnet Carers Centre is a local charity based in Finchley. We have been providing care and support in the Borough for almost 30 years but the need has never been greater.

Our mission is a simple one. To do our utmost to make sure that ll those in the Borough who are carers and are cared for have the best possible support and help to improve their lives.

We are one minute walk from North Finchley Bus Depot. The following buses travel to North Finchley: 82, 125, 134, 221, 263 and 460.

The nearest tube station is West Finchley (Northern Line) which is approximately a 20 minute walk.

Are you a carer?

identifying Barnet’s invisible carers Barnet is the largest Borough in London and it has a very large number of carers. The last census data from 2011 estimated that there were over 35,000 unpaid carers in Barnet. Today that number must be close to 40,000, and, with the population of the Borough predicted to grow considerably over the next decade, the number of carers is likely to increase dramatically. Barnet not only has a growing population, it also has an ageing population and, for this reason we know that the calls on our services will continue to increase.

There are a large number of people in the community who do not see themselves as carers. It is just something that they do. This might be for family or community reasons or it might just be because carers are not aware that they can receive help in their role.

Can you help us identify the invisible carers in Barnet?

Supporting Barnet’s Young C Our young people’s team at Barnet Carers Centre, BYCAS (Barnet Young Carers and Siblings), helps to support many of the hundreds of young carers that live in the Borough.

We work closely with the London Borough of Barnet to help identify young carers and to provide support services around both

the child and the family.

We run projects to provide support for all young carers as well as those who we feel have special needs

such as young adult carers and those young people who are the main carers for a parent or carer.

We work with schools across the Borough to help them identify and support young carers and link up with other services across Barnet.

If you are a young carer, or if you know a young carer who might benefit from our support, please contact us. We can make a difference.

Helping children to cope with an adult’s responsibility Young carers often have to take on responsibilities that go beyond what we would normally expect children and young people to do.

Cooking meals, cleaning the house, providing emotional support, providing personal care - the life of a young carer can sometimes see the traditional responsibilities turned upside down.

At Barnet Carers Centre, the BYCAS Team provide support for young people which enables them to cope with the situation they find themselves in. We provide one-to-one mentoring, life skills training, individual counselling and tutoring support for these, often isolated and vulnerable, young people.

Education Support & Fun

One-to-one tutoring to support young carers struggling to meet their potential in school because of their caring role.

Homework clubs to provide resources, support and a learning environment to help give young carers the opportunities otherwise not open to them.

Group and individual mentoring provides young people with the opportunity to build their confidence and connect with others in a similar situation.

Support through fun Being a young carer can be tough and we provide a wide range of activities via our projects where young people can be supported and mentored but also have fun and have the opportunity just to be a child. Our activity “hubs� run around the Borough for two age groups and we also organise events and outings aimed at young adult carers and those young people who have primary caring responsibility.

Bringing adult carers together As an informal carer you have a right to access support to help you maintain independence in your caring role. In Barnet, several of these services are operated by Barnet Carers Centre on behalf of Barnet Council.

As every Carer, and every

cared-for person, is different, Barnet Carers Centre provides an Individual Support Service. This will help you to develop a personalised plan and assist you in getting the required support services in place.

Our dedicated Adult Carer Support and

Outreach Team Officers work with carers for as long needed to help manage and maintain their caring responsibilities. We provide a flexible service, designed around the needs of both the carer and those they care for.

This can include: One-to-One meetings: To discuss any concerns that may exist for the carers and their families.

Statutory Carers Needs Assessment: This helps us identify and tailor our support to meet your needs.

Carer Discount Scheme and Leisure Pass: Access to a range of discounted services only available to carers in Barnet.

Introduction and referral to other services and partner organisations that can provide support.

Grants and subsidies: Help with the cost of caring or funding for respite breaks for carers. Some funds are only available to carers registered with Barnet Carers Centre.

Our Carer Support Officers can help you by: • Completing a Carers Needs Assessment and helping you to develop a Support Plan to address your key needs.

• Providing up to 12 months of one-to-one support to ensure that your support needs are being met on an ongoing basis.

• Refering you to the Centre-based services only available to Registered Carers, • Providing an Emergency Card Scheme for reassurance that those you care for will be looked after in the event that you are suddenly unavailable.

Creative writing provides an outlet for creativity and an opportunity to mix with others in a similar position.

When the strain becomes too much, massage can provide relaxation and stress relief.

Our ever-popular holistic health workshop has been described as stimulating, refreshing and rejuvenating.

When you register with us as a carer you will get a leisure pass which will give you access to local leisure centres and swimming pools.

Our counselling service is open to all registered carers. We offer up to 12 sessions, and while there is currently a waiting list, we are expanding the service to meet demand.

Practical support Appointments can be made with our specialist legal advisor to help with issues, such as power of attorney.

Form filling for benefits and other things can be very stressful. Our specialist advisor can help you.

Helping you care If you are caring for a person with dementia, our one-to-one sessions can help you in your role.

Our support group for those caring for someone with cancer facilitated by Cherry Lodge Cancer Care

If you are looking to return to work our employment project can provide you with all of the support you need.

Learn new skills in areas such as first aid, manual handling, welfare benefits, stress management.

Where those who care for people with mental health issues come to support each other.

If you need a period of respite our companionship service can provide a volunteer to befriend your cared for.

Health and Wellbeing Our regular drop-in arts and craft classes give the chance to relax and express yourself.

At Community & Home Support Services we have been providing care for people in the Borough of Barnet for over 30 years.

Our knowledge of care and of Barnet is second to none.

We provide social and personal care in the home and community, 24 hours a day, seven days a week with professional, dedicated care staff who are kind, caring and compassionate as well as reliable and fully trained in a wide range of areas of support.

As a local charity we do not have to worry about making a profit. Because of that, we can price our services competitively and make sure that our staff are well paid and trained.

We are Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulated and are an approved provider to the London Borough of Barnet.

We offer a bespoke service that will fit your needs. Whether it is a few hours of respite care during the day to allow time for errands, day visits to cook lunches and ensure medication compliance, night-time care or complete 24 hour care, we can help you.

Reliability is one of the key components of a good care service and it is something that we take very seriously. If we say we will be with you by 12 lunchtime, that is when we will be there.

We pride ourselves on continuity of care and we work hard to ensure that the same Personal Care Assistant attends every time.

We know that night care is very expensive which is why we are introducing our new “Night Owl” service. Our staff can visit for an hour or more each night to check on the cared for and provide medication or other services. We can also arrange for an on-call service for hours between 10pm and 6am. Staff are motivated and proud to work for the service, as a result staff turnover is kept to a minimum ensuring that continuity of care is in place for most people who use the service.

Barnet Carers Centre 2017/18 At Barnet Carers Centre, our vision is a simple one. Making Barnet a better place for carers and the cared for. Our mission is to to provide high quality services that respond to the needs of informal unpaid carers both young and old and the people they support.

The services provided are information, emotional and practical support, advice and breaks. We also offer community and home based care and support services to people with support needs and those with caring responsibilities. By supporting carers, we aim to improve the wellbeing of those who require the support of a personal care assistant, or a break from caring responsibilities. These include young carers through to adult carers and can range from a child from the age of five years or young person caring for a parent or sibling to an adult carer caring for a child, partner, or older relative.

Criteria for receiving support The carer or the person cared for must live in the borough of Barnet in order to access the Centre’s services. Self-funders with support needs accessing the Centre’s Community and Home Support Service may be resident outside of Barnet. Our services are provided mainly through contracts with the local authority and through grants from trusts and foundations.

Financial review

The Statement of Financial Activities for the financial year ended 31st March 2018, show that income increased from £1,215,932 in 2017 to £1,304,807, and that resources expended also increased from £1,257,806 in 2017 to £1,277,168. This resulted in an overall increase of reserves in the sum of £ 27,639, compared to a reduction in 2017 of £ 41,874.
