An Anglican community inspiring every learner every experience every day
To be a leader in Christian education that is characterised by a global vision that inspires hope
Commitment
We acknowledge the Dharug, Darkinjung, Wonnarua and Yolŋu peoples who are the traditional custodians of the land on which Barker College, Darkinjung Barker, Ngarralingayil Barker and Dhupuma Barker stand. We pay respect to the Elders past, present and emerging of the Dharug, Darkinjung, Wonnarua and Yolŋu nations and extend that respect to other Indigenous people within the Barker College community.
It gives me great pleasure to provide you with the outstanding HSC results from the leaving Class of 2024.
The Class of 2024 has led the School exceptionally well. I constantly remind our seniors that no school rises above its Year 12. They set the tone of our community, modelling focussed commitment, kindness and capacity. Yet amidst the shining achievements of these remarkable young people, we cannot ignore the dark moments of sadness that affected this cohort. We honour each and every student and the care, effort and support provided to them by their teachers.
This year we were delighted with a record number of 39 All-Rounders (achieving top Band results in 10 or more units), 12 placegetters and 80 students who received an ATAR of 95 and above. It is inspirational to note that these students contributed to the broader Barker community through an extensive range of co-curricular and service activities.
Barker is equally proud of the countless students in our graduating year whose efforts surpassed their own aspirations, demonstrating once again that the
diversity of the School is a strength. To one, to all, we offer our deepest admiration and thanks.
Barker is a non-selective school and we are greatly encouraged to see the exceptional effort that our students invested in their work. This augurs well for their future in whatever endeavour they choose to pursue. We continue to be competitive with schools that have selective student cohorts.
The HSC League Tables published in the media indicates that Barker College was ranked 47 in NSW whilst a useful guide for some observers, it fails to capture the countless stories of outstanding effort by students who lift themselves into higher bands by consistent and focussed efforts with the support of their caring teachers and encouragement of their loving families. I honour all the graduating Class of 2024 for their dedication, and we are pleased to share just a few of these stories in the pages that follow.
The Heads of Department, Heads of House and all staff are also to be congratulated for their support of their students. School education is a lengthy experience where so much more is accomplished than can ever be measured in ranks and marks. We seek to equip our students to do good in the world and to exercise their gifts for the benefit of others. The Class of 2024 certainly bring us hope for their future.
On behalf of over 17000 alumni whose ranks you now join, congratulations. From the scores of teachers, coaches and mentors over your 13+ years of education, congratulations to each and every student. We give thanks to the Lord for the blessing that the 2024 Year 12 cohort has been to our community.
We wish every student the continued blessings of the Lord for a life of fulfilment ahead. We will watch their future with a thankful heart and remind them we are at the ready to care for them all their days. Peace.
Phillip Heath AM Head of Barker College
From the outset, Lily was actively involved in various activities at Barker. She pursued the Duke of Edinburgh Award up to the silver level, participating in numerous service activities, including Time Out Basketball.
Additionally, she joined the Footprint group in Year 10, demonstrating her commitment to environmental sustainability. However, her primary focus was on sports, particularly Surf Lifesaving, Football, and Athletics, which she began in her very first week at Barker.
“I joined the Athletics and Cross-Country program because I have always loved running. An added benefit is that I have been lucky enough to train with some of my closest friends at school, and the ISA Cross-Country and Athletics carnivals have become some of my favourite school memories.” Her passion for Football stemmed from the camaraderie and fun of team sports, allowing her to connect with students across different year groups.
Balancing her co-curricular activities with academic studies was no small feat, but Lily managed it with the support from the School. “Being able to train at school versus running somewhere else was a huge time saver because it cut down on travel time a lot.” The support from the BASE program and her teachers played a crucial role in helping her maintain this balance. “Running and playing soccer is something I enjoy, and I found it to be a much-needed break in the midst of Year 12 stress, which motivated me to establish a good balance.”
“One of the best things about Barker is all the opportunities to try new things. If you throw yourself in 100%, you will make some great friends, go on some awesome trips, and it will become some of your best memories from school.”
Reflecting on her proudest achievement, Lily shared, “I feel like being at Barker and trying new things taught me how to handle being uncomfortable. One thing which I have always struggled with is public speaking, so I am proud of myself for taking on the challenge of being House Captain and pushing myself to become more comfortable speaking in front of a group.”
Barker’s support was instrumental in Lily’s academic journey. The flexibility offered by the School, such as Accelerated Business Studies, allowed her to manage her workload effectively. “All of my teachers were super helpful and wanted us to do our very best, so I felt supported by them throughout my whole journey.”
Lily’s advice to the next class of Year 12s is to fully embrace the opportunities Barker offers. “The support and opportunities Barker offers are pretty special. Although Year 12 is a busy year, I would tell them to still fully immerse themselves in their co-curriculars and any Barker events. I’ve loved my time at Barker, and I’m going to miss it.”
In her own words, Lily describes her Barker experience as “the best,” a fitting summary of her own journey at the School.
From the very beginning, Arnav’s love for Mathematics stood out. “My favourite subject was Maths,” he recalls, “since it challenged me to think critically and problemsolve in ways that I wouldn’t have imagined otherwise.
I enjoyed the logical progression of solving each question, and the satisfaction of reaching the solution was beyond rewarding.”
When asked about his motivation, Arnav shared, “Maths always appealed to me as a subject that would unlock different ways of thinking. The gradual satisfaction of understanding difficult concepts, along with the encouragement of my teachers, led me to keep pushing myself to see how far I could go.”
Barker played a pivotal role in Arnav’s academic journey. “My academic journey at Barker was enriched by an environment where I could ask for help and collaborate with others without feeling overwhelmed. My teachers willingly supported me and cared for my progress, which made the process much more seamless,” he reflects.
Beyond academics, Arnav immersed himself in a variety of co-curricular activities. He was involved in photography, Robotics, Band, Tennis, and the Da Vinci Decathlon. Each activity offered a unique experience. “Photography was a creative outlet, Robotics encouraged me to think critically and work collaboratively, band and tennis were great opportunities to connect with others and take a break from academics, and Da Vinci taught me the importance of teamwork,” he explains.
Arnav believes that co-curricular activities are essential for a well-rounded education. “Cocurricular activities at Barker allowed me to find a healthy balance between academics and exploring other passions. I also found it was a great way to meet new people and feel more connected within the broader school community,” he says.
One of Arnav’s proudest achievements was making it to the VEX Robotics Nationals Tournament in Year 7. “Being able to be a part of something so exciting at such an early time in my Barker journey made the experience incredibly memorable,” he recalls with pride.
As he prepares to leave Barker, Arnav has valuable advice for the next class of Year 12s. “Pace yourself and don’t let the pressure consume you. The ongoing stress of Year 12 makes it easy to feel overwhelmed, but taking time for yourself and leaning on your friends and teachers makes an immense difference. Also, remember that Year 12 is a marathon, rather than a sprint – study with intention and maintain consistency.”
Reflecting on his time at Barker, Arnav cherishes the memories, and the lessons learned. “One of my favourite memories was the Barker Big Start. It gave me the chance to strengthen connections with friends, and for the first time, the whole cohort started feeling more like a family. That sense of belonging made the rest of the journey feel more meaningful,” he shares.
“Barker has taught me the value in struggling and the subsequent growth from these challenges.
It taught me the value of balance – finding time for my interests alongside my academic pursuits made the whole experience more worthwhile. You don’t have to be perfect at everything, just willing to learn and adapt,” Arnav concludes. If he could describe his Barker experience in two words, they would be “forever grateful.”
Chelsea’s time at Barker has been marked by an impressive array of co-curricular and service-learning activities that have significantly shaped her experience.
Throughout her time at Barker, Chelsea has embraced numerous roles and responsibilities, including her leadership as a Prefect, where she led the Year 12 Jersey Committee, Year 12 Formal Committee, and developed the Indigenous Campuses Prefect Committee. Her involvement in sports such as Softball, where she served as Captain, Strength and Conditioning, and Squash, highlights her dedication and versatility.
Reflecting on her involvement, Chelsea recalls, “I distinctly remember on the first day of Year 10 when I commenced my time at Barker, Mr. Giltrap gave us our first-ever address and stated, ‘Try everything because now is the time to do it.’ That singular comment was the driving factor for participating in various new and unique activities at Barker.” This advice led her to immerse herself in a multitude of activities, fostering connections and discovering new passions.
Balancing these activities with academic studies was a challenge Chelsea embraced. She utilised her co-curricular and service activities as a ‘brain break’ from academic work, allowing her to relax and engage in something she was passionate about. This approach helped her maintain a balance between her studies and other interests, contributing to her overall wellbeing and success.
“By immersing myself in Barker’s co-curricular activities from Year 10, such as service opportunities to visit Barker’s Indigenous campuses, I wouldn’t have discovered my strong passion and desire to learn more about Indigenous culture.” This passion led her to study Aboriginal Studies as an HSC subject, attend the 2023 Garma Festival, and to create the Indigenous Campuses Prefect Committee, which is one of her proudest achievements. The committee aims to support and connect students across Barker’s campuses.
Chelsea’s time at Barker has taught her a great deal about herself, her passions, and her values. She has discovered a strong desire to help people and participate in service opportunities, which has influenced her potential career paths in the medical field. When asked to describe her Barker experience in two words, Chelsea simply says, “endless opportunities.”
During her time at the School, Mia immersed herself in a variety of sport, including Football, AFL, Touch Football, and Athletics.
“I got involved with a range of activities as it allowed me to not only meet new people from different year groups, but also find people that shared my passions and interests,” Mia explains. These activities provided her with a muchneeded break from her studies, both physically and mentally.
To balance her co-curricular commitments with academic studies Mia found that having a weekly schedule was crucial. “Finding a balance between school co-curriculars, outside of school teams, and academic studies was difficult, but I found that having a weekly schedule that included set times I would go to the Senior School Hub to study, or attend subject access was very beneficial,” she says. This approach helped her stay on top of her workload and manage her time effectively around training sessions.
One of Mia’s proudest achievements at Barker was being selected for the 1st AFL team in Year 12. “Even though it was my first year playing the sport, my teammates and coaches were very welcoming and taught me so much,” she recalls.
Academically, Mia’s favourite subject was Biology. “Biology is by far my favourite subject as I find human anatomy and genetics very fascinating,” she shares. A highlight of her academic journey was the biology trip to Lizard Island in Year 11, where she spent a week studying coral in the Great Barrier Reef.
Mia’s advice for the next class of Year 12s is to maintain a balanced routine. “Year 12 is very busy and without a balanced routine of study, co-curricular, socialising and rest, it can become overwhelming,” she advises.
Reflecting on her time at Barker, Mia highlights the 2023 Football Tour to the Gold Coast as a special memory. “It was the first football tour that the Girls’ 1st team got to be a part of, and it was an amazing experience to play against teams from around Australia and New Zealand,” she says.
Mia’s time at Barker taught her many valuable lessons, including kindness, respect, gratitude, and the importance of friendship. If she could describe her Barker experience in two words, they would be “personal growth.”
Eric Jiang’s journey at Barker as a veteran has been marked by a blend of academic rigor, personal growth, and memorable experiences. Reflecting on his time at Barker, Eric shares insights into his favourite subjects, motivations, and achievements.
Eric’s favourite subject is Latin, a choice influenced by the small class size of just four students. “Having a small class size allows for efficient collaboration and enjoyable learning together with close friends,” Eric explains. This intimate setting not only fostered a close-knit learning environment but also allowed the class to tailor the pace of their learning to best suit their needs as a cohort.
Eric’s teachers, particularly from the English department, have noted his dedication and hard work. When asked about his motivation, Eric reveals, “What really helped to motivate me was actually becoming my own biggest motivator. As I worked towards my eventual goal of achieving high academic standards and one day hopefully working in the field of Medicine, I have continuously set goals for myself and challenged myself to improve.”
Barker has played a significant role in supporting Eric’s academic journey. The School’s diverse curriculum and multitude of learning opportunities have allowed him to extend his learning. “My teachers have always been willing to both academically and personally support me in becoming the best version of myself,” Eric says. He also highlights the importance of Barker’s infrastructure and learning resources in facilitating his academic improvement.
One of Eric’s proudest achievements at Barker is placing fourth in Australia for the best pair of Model United Nations participants for high schoolers. “Working together with my teammate Justin, and supported all the way by our Debating coordinator, Mr. Hood, I am so grateful to Barker for backing our interests in Debating and Public Speaking at the highest national level,” Eric recounts.
Among Eric’s special memories at Barker is the rock climbing he did on his gold Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey. “From 40m flat faces to slanted crack climbing, I was terrified at first. However, I learned to trust the harnesses, my shoes, and my finger strength to help me achieve new heights with each climb,” he recalls.
Eric offers valuable advice for the next class of Year 12s: “Keep everything in perspective. Whilst assessment marks become a big focus of school, Barker life encompasses more than just marks through offering so many chances for new friendships and various co-curricular activities.”
From the very beginning of his Barker journey in Year 7, Rory immersed himself in a variety of co-curricular activities.
“At the start of my Barker journey in Year 7, I said yes to doing just about anything I could sign up for,” he recalls. Dance, Basketball, Rugby, and Robotics were all part of his afterschool schedule. As he progressed through Middle and Senior School, Rory honed his interests and focused on what he truly enjoyed.
Rory’s involvement in these activities stemmed from a desire to explore new opportunities. “I wanted to explore different opportunities that I otherwise wouldn’t have tried without Barker,” he explains. The School’s exceptional Robotics facilities were a significant draw for him. “No other school has the same Robotics facilities in the whole of Australia, and that was one of the main reasons I went to Barker in the first place.”
Balancing co-curricular activities with academic studies was a challenge Rory mastered over time. “It took some getting used to, but making sure that I was prepared for all of my assessments before spending time with cocurricular activities was key,” he says. Early on, he learned that procrastination led to stress and poorer results, motivating him to complete assessments well ahead of deadlines in his later years.
Rory emphasises the importance of immersing oneself in Barker’s co-curricular activities. His participation in Robotics took him to Canada, Türkiye and the USA, where he not only competed but also explored different cultures and made lasting connections. “I am truly amazed at the opportunities that are offered as being a student at Barker.”
One of Rory’s proudest achievements was becoming the Robotics Captain for 2023. “It was something I had spent considerable time trying to achieve and it allowed me to learn key leadership and teamwork skills,” he reflects. A special memory for Rory was driving the robot at the robotics championship in Houston. “Feeling the pressure of the competition and the full support of my peers is definitely one of the most rewarding experiences,” he says. This year, Barker Robotics won their division in the world championship and placed third overall out of over 4000 teams, marking the furthest any Australian team has gone in this competition.
His various leadership roles, including as a Middle School House leader and Robotics Captain, have equipped him with essential project management and organisational skills. “Barker has really taught me to be a leader and to try new things,” he notes.
When asked to describe his Barker experience in two words, Rory thoughtfully responds, “Honor non Honores.” He believes this phrase symbolises the Barker culture of quietly achieving and seeking personal growth over recognition. “It’s been really great to see the effort that our cohort has put into both academic and co-curricular aspects of Barker,” he concludes.
Spending 12 years at one school is a significant part of anyone’s life, and for Benjamin Weatherall, his time at Barker College has been nothing short of transformative.
“I started Barker in Year 1 and soon embraced the co-curricular opportunities on offerlearning guitar, a little bit of violin, saxophone, double bass, and percussion at school, as well as singing in the Copeland Choir and playing quite a lot of tennis in Junior School,” he recalls. His enthusiasm for learning and exploring new fields was evident from an early age.
Throughout his time at Barker, Benjamin was deeply involved in the Music program. He played in big bands, jazz ensembles, wind bands and the symphony orchestra. His vocal talents were showcased in the Copeland Choir during Junior School and briefly in the Middle School Choir. “I did debating for a few years as well as a range of sports, and also competed in the Da Vinci Decathlon team in 2019,” he shares. His involvement extended to several clubs, including Ancient Greek, Philosophy, and Book Club, which provided enriching ways to spend lunchtimes. Film photography in Middle School offered a meditative escape from his other commitments.
“I think that immersing yourself in Barker’s cocurricular activities can be a great opportunity to broaden your horizons and allow for personal development beyond the academic demands of school,” he says. These pursuits, he feels, are vital for leading a well-rounded life during high school.
Reflecting on his time at Barker, Benjamin highlights the connections he made through various activities. The opportunity to connect with others in activities like the Japan Band Tour and school camps, stand out as some of his most enjoyable experiences. These interactions enriched his school life and created lasting memories.
One of Benjamin’s proudest achievements at Barker was winning the Barker Concerto Competition in 2023. “It was great to be able to perform alongside the other finalists and later perform as a marimba soloist at the Masterpiece Concert in the Chatswood Concourse,” he says. The months of preparation and dedication culminated in a performance that showcased his hard work and emotional commitment to music.
In summing up his Barker experience, Benjamin chooses these words: “Challenging and growthinducing.” His journey at Barker has been marked by a willingness to embrace challenges and a commitment to personal growth, making his 12 years at the School a period of significant development and achievement.
In the realm of sports, Tim’s enthusiasm for Volleyball stood out. He played for the 1sts Volleyball team in both Year 11 and 12, even captaining the team in his final year.
His commitment earned him a spot as a reserve player for the CAS representative volleyball team. Reflecting on his experience, Tim shared, “Volleyball has always been my passion. The intensity of the Friday night fixtures, especially with huge crowds and great cheers, created an atmosphere I’ll never forget.”
Tim’s musical talents were equally impressive. Since Year 7, he played the Euphonium in Barker’s Wind Symphony, with the Japan Band Tour being a highlight. His love for jazz led him to join the Year 12 Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Orchestra, which he described as “always a high point in the week.”
Robotics was another significant aspect of Tim’s Barker experience. In Year 10 and 11, he dedicated much time to learning and participating in Robotics, eventually becoming one of the FRC Mechanical Captains for the 2023 season. Leading the development of a subsystem and participating in the World Championships in Houston were among his proudest moments. “The trip to Houston was fantastic. Seeing everything in action on the world stage was an unforgettable experience,” Tim recalled.
Tim also completed his Gold, Silver, and Bronze Duke of Edinburgh awards, finding joy in the award trips. His involvement in CRU and participation in the Garma Festival in Year 11 further enriched his Barker journey and inspired him to become a better ally for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Academically, Tim excelled in Physics, his favourite subject. He found it fascinating to understand the inner workings of the world and appreciated how it applied to other aspects of his schooling, such as Design and Technology projects, Maths, and Robotics. Barker supported Tim’s academic journey with amazing teachers, valuable resources, and a focus on individual encouragement. One of his proudest achievements was receiving the MG Cowdry Award for service and leadership in the Middle School, a recognition that affirmed his desire to lead others.
Tim’s advice to the next class of Year 12s is to value their time by doing their best and creating strong connections within Barker’s communities.
“My time at Barker has taught me that success is about finding what you are passionate about and excelling in it,” Tim concluded. “It takes dedication, initiative, and a humble acknowledgment that you can’t succeed alone.”
A significant number of Barker students were given early entry offers to university in 2024. Students may apply for early entry programs based on the following categories and typically their Year 11 NESA grade plays a key role:
• Academic merit
• Elite athletes and performers
• Future leaders recognised by the School
• Students who have demonstrated significant school and community engagment and volunteering
• Rural or remote applicants
• Those who have experienced disadvantage
It is pleasing to note that so many Barker students who applied for an Early Entry program, were successful in receiving at least one offer, with many students receiving multiple early entry offers. These offers helped to provide an extra level of certainty as students continued to work hard to achieve their best in their final HSC exams.
The results listed below are only an attempt to highlight the performance of Barker students in 2024. Barker has performed exceptionally well. To gain a better understanding of these results and Barker’s overall performance these need to be viewed in the perspective of the Barker environment.
A reminder that the ATAR is a rank, not a mark (the highest achievable ATAR is 99.95).
These ATARs have been calculated from the HSC marks provided by NESA and the estimated 2023 scaling points.
These results have been calculated internally as complete information is not available to schools for all years. Provisionally they are as follows.
