Das heutige Konzert ist dem Andenken des britischen Kultur­ managers Sir Peter Jonas gewidmet, der am 22. April 2020 im Alter von 73 Jahren verstorben ist. Er war dem Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) und dem Pierre Boulez Saal über Jahre eng verbunden. Gemeinsam mit Daniel Barenboim kuratierte er die Festveranstaltung zum 50. Jubiläum des WZB, die am 19. Juni 2019 im Pierre Boulez Saal stattfand. Jörg Widmanns Labyrinth IV erlebte an diesem Abend unter der Leitung von Daniel Barenboim seine Uraufführung.

Von Irrgärten und neuen Wegen Das Boulez Ensemble spielt Mozart, Schubert, Berg und Widmann

Das Leben als Labyrinth Zu Zeiten, in denen Regeln und Abstand den Alltag bestimmen, tritt nach außen scheinbar Ordnung ins Leben. Und ­tatsächlich: Wer hat nicht in den vergangenen Wochen ein Regal aufgebaut, den Kleiderschrank entschlackt oder sich von fragwürdigen Kisten auf dem Dachboden befreit? Und doch täuscht oftmals die danach einkehrende innere Ruhe. Viel zu sehr ist man im alltäglichen ­Labyrinth des Lebens gefangen: da blockieren Entscheidungen, die aus Unentschlossenheit aufgeschoben wurden, oder selbst bei guter Planung plötzlich eintretende Hindernisse. Immer wieder fordern sie kräftezehrende Umwege, nur selten tut sich eine erstaunliche Abkürzung auf. Und dennoch empfinden wir Lust daran, im Herbst durch das ins Feld geschnittene Mais-Labyrinth zu tappen oder uns den gepflegten Hecken im Irrgarten eines barocken Schlosses auszuliefern. In allen Fällen ist es die Suche nach dem Ausgang oder mehr noch: einem Ziel, die den Menschen seit Jahr­ tausenden vorantreibt.

Die durch Homer und andere überlieferten Mythen der Antike verweisen auf Kreta und die minoische Kultur als Ursprung eines Labyrinths, in dem Minotaurus (halb Mensch, halb Stier) eingesperrt

lebte und nach Menschenopfern verlangte. Erst Theseus konnte ihn dort erlegen und fand durch Ariadnes Faden wieder heraus. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts postulierte der britische Archäologe Sir Arthur Evans, den Palast von König Minos gefunden zu haben und rekons­ truierte mit viel Fantasie (und Beton!) einzelne Elemente. Aktuelle archäologische Studien zeichnen indes ein anderes Bild: Bei dem farbigen, aber kleinen und abseits gelegenen angeblichen Thronsaal handele es sich lediglich um eine von Priesterinnen bewachte religiöse Stätte; das eigentliche Zentrum des weitläufigen, vielfach ver­ schachtelten Baus sei dagegen ein großer Platz gewesen. Die vielen symbolischen Darstellungen des Labyrinths auf antiken Münzen entstanden erst ein Jahrtausend nach der Zeit der Minoer und gehen auf spätere Erzählungen zurück. Was bleibt, ist tatsächlich ein ­Labyrinth – aus alten Mythen, Projektionen und Fantasien, wie sie uns begegnen bei jeder (Re-)Konstruktion von Geschichte in ­Geschichten, mit denen wir auch unser eigenes kulturelles Erbe für die Gegenwart zu erklären versuchen. Überschrittene Grenzen Franz Schubert: „Quartettsatz“ c-moll D 703 Angesichts der kurzen Lebensspanne bei Franz Schubert von einem „Spätwerk“ zu sprechen, verbietet sich von selbst. Dennoch lässt sich sein Schaffen gliedern in die Fülle der frühen Werke (mit sechs Symphonien und wenigstens elf Streichquartetten) und all jene Kompositionen, die ab etwa 1824 in der Zeit der Reife ent­ standen. Dazwischen liegen die „Jahre der Krise“ (1818–1823) – jener Abschnitt in Schuberts schöpferischer Biographie, in dem er einen inneren Abstand zu seinen bisherigen Werken gewann, sich stilistisch weiterentwickelte und im Bereich des Ausdrucks neue Wege ein­ schlug, in dem er aber auch zahlreiche dieser Experimente unver­ mittelt abbrach. Als sein älterer Bruder Ferdinand in einem Brief vom 3. Juli 1824 berichtet, er habe angefangen, „deine Quartetten wieder zu spielen“, reagierte Schubert mit verhaltener Ironie und deutlicher Distanz zu den eigenen Werken: „Über Deine Quartetten-­ Gesellschaft wundere ich mich umsomehr, da Du den Ignaz!!!

[Schuppanzigh] dazu bewegen vermochtest. Aber besser wird es seyn, wenn Ihr Euch an andere Quartetten als die meinigen haltet, denn es ist nichts daran, außer daß sie vielleicht Dir gefallen, dem alles von mir gefällt.“

Zu den Kompositionen aus dieser Zeit der radikalen Neuorien­ tierung gehört auch das im Dezember 1820 niedergeschriebene Quartett-Allegro c-moll, das bis heute wie eine seltsam entfernte Insel wirkt: „Keine Brücke führt zu ihm“, konstatiert Alfred Einstein in seiner Schubert-Biographie. In der Tat bleibt der Satz mit seiner düsteren, rastlos bohrenden Unruhe singulär – und führt Schuberts mühevolles kompositorisches Suchen auf geradezu bestürzende Weise klanglich vor Augen: Die nach Erlösung strebende Reprise wird in den letzten elf Takten mit der in sich kreisenden chromati­ schen Geste der Hauptthemengruppe harsch gewendet, als gäbe es kein Entrinnen. So geschlossen heute dieser Satz anmutet, so bleibt er doch nur Teil eines unvollständigen Streichquartetts: Der im Manuskript mit „Andante“ überschriebene zweite Satz bricht nach 41 Takten ab. Dass diese im Jahr ihrer Entstehung Grenzen überschreitende Komposition dennoch Eingang ins Repertoire fand, ist Johannes Brahms zu verdanken, der die Handschrift aus unbekanntem Besitz erworben hatte. Er organisierte eine erste Auf­ führung durch das Hellmesberger-Quartett im März 1867 wie auch die drei Jahre später erfolgte Drucklegung mit dem von ihm ange­ regten Titel „Quartett-Satz (C moll)“.

Romantische Wurzeln Alban Berg: Vier Stücke für Klarinette und Klavier op. 5 Wie sehr die Klangsprache der Romantik in der Musik Alban Bergs fortlebt, lässt sich in geradezu berückender Klarheit an den 1913 vollendeten Vier Stücken für Klarinette und Klavier erkennen.

Sie entstanden nach Ende des regelmäßigen Kompositionsunterrichts bei Arnold Schönberg in einer Zeit der stilistischen Orientierung, in der ganz unterschiedliche Gattungen und Besetzungskonstellationen bedacht wurden: von der einsätzigen Klaviersonate op. 1, den Vier Liedern op. 2 und dem zweisätzigen Streichquartett op. 3 (alle 1910 veröffentlicht) über die zwei Jahre später komponierten ­Orchesterlieder nach Ansichtskartentexten von Peter Altenberg op.

4 bis zu den großformatigen Drei Stücken für Orchester op. 6 von 1914. Der verhältnismäßig geringe schöpferische Ertrag dieser Jahre hat freilich verschiedene (auch ökonomische) Ursachen, wie die zeitraubende Anfertigung der Klavierauszüge zu Schönbergs epochalen Gurre-Liedern und Franz Schrekers Oper Der ferne Klang.

Mit einer Spieldauer von nur knapp acht Minuten hat Berg in der direkten Nachfolge von Schönbergs Klavierstücken op. 11 vier Sätze geschrieben, die von einer verblüffenden Kürze sind (und teilweise motivisch auf das Werk des Lehrers Bezug nehmen); ­dennoch handelt es sich der Idee nach nicht um Miniaturen, wie sie etwa Anton Webern geradezu radikal entwarf. Vielmehr löst Berg in seiner Komposition jene Idee ein, die Schönberg schon im August 1909 in einem Brief an Ferruccio Busoni formulierte: „Meine Musik muss kurz sein. Knapp! In zwei Noten: nicht bauen, sondern ausdrücken!! Und das Resultat, das ich erhoffe: keine styli­ sierten und sterilisierten Dauergefühle. Die giebts im Menschen nicht: dem Menschen ist es unmöglich, nur ein Gefühl gleichzeitig zu haben. Man hat tausende auf einmal. Und diese Buntheit, diese Vielgestaltigkeit, diese Unlogik, die unsere Empfindungen zeigen […], möchte ich in meiner Musik haben. Sie soll Ausdruck der Empfindung sein, so wie die Empfindung wirklich ist, die uns mit unserem Unbewußten in Verbindung bringt und nicht ein Wechsel­ balg aus Empfindung und ‚bewusster Logik‘.“ Klanglicher Zauber Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Klarinettenquintett A-Dur KV 581 Voller Begeisterung notiert Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart am 3. Dezember 1778 in einem Brief aus Mannheim an seinen Vater und mit Blick auf die Salzburger Hofkapelle: „Ach wenn wir nur auch clarinetti hätten! – sie glauben nicht was eine sinfonie mit flauten, oboen und clarinetten für einen herrlichen Effect macht!“ Tatsächlich war die erst wenige Jahrzehnte zuvor aus dem Chalumeau hervorgegangene Klarinette zu jener Zeit noch ein vollkommen neues Instrument. Mit ihrer klanglichen Vielfalt in gleich drei ­charakteristischen Registern stellte sie eine bis dahin unerhörte, sich subjektiv ausdrückende Bereicherung des Klangspektrums dar, ganz so wie dies Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart 1785/86 in seinen Ideen zu einer Ästhetik der Tonkunst beschrieben hat: „Der Charakter derselben ist: in Liebe zerflossenes Gefühl, – so ganz der Ton des empfindsamen Herzens […]. Der Ton ist so süß, so hin­ schmachtend; und wer die Mitteltinten [Zwischenfarben] darauf auszudrücken vermag, darf seines Sieges über die Herzen gewiß seyn.“ Und 1790 stellte für Johann Georg Albrechtsberger die ­Klarinette ein Instrument der „mannigfaltigsten Effecte“ dar, in

dessen Klang „bey seelenvollem Vortrage“ ein „wirklich hinreißender Zauber“ liegt.

Offenbar hatte die Klarinette mit ihrem weit gespannten Aus­ drucksspektrum am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts den musikästhetischen Nerv der vorromantischen Zeit getroffen. Der Erfolg des neuen ­Instruments war allerdings entscheidend abhängig von der sich wechselseitig befruchtenden Zusammenarbeit zwischen Instrumen­ talisten und Komponisten, wurden doch zahlreiche Werke mit ­Soloklarinette nicht nur von einzelnen Musikern erprobt und auf­ geführt, sondern oftmals überhaupt erst inspiriert – so geschehen bei Mozart (durch Anton Stadler), Carl Maria von Weber (durch Heinrich Baermann), Louis Spohr (durch Simon Hermstedt) und noch bei Johannes Brahms (durch Richard Mühlfeld). Parallel dazu erfuhr das Instrument bauliche Veränderungen am Klappensystem oder auch im Ambitus. Gelegentlich entstanden daher auch spezifisch ausgeformte Werke, die auf eine bestimmte Entwicklungsstufe des Instruments zugeschnitten waren.

Dies gilt für Mozarts Klarinettenquintett wie auch für das ­Klarinettenkonzert A-Dur KV 622, die für Anton Stadler und seine Bassettklarinette entstanden. In der Tiefe um vier Halbtöne erweitert (und nicht mit dem Bassetthorn zu verwechseln), stellte sie ein räumlich weitgehend auf Wien beschränktes kurzzeitiges „Sonder­ modell“ der Instrumentenfamilie dar. Entsprechend wurden beide Kompositionen bei der postumen Veröffentlichung im Druck durch kleinere Revisionen im Notentext für eine gewöhnliche A-Klarinette spielbar gemacht; in dieser Form haben die Werke dann auch ­außerhalb der Donaumetropole rasch den Weg ins Repertoire ge­ funden.

Mit welchem Anspruch Mozart an die Konzeption des Klarinetten­ quintetts gegangen war, zeigt bereits die äußere, große viersätzige Anlage, bei der das Menuett überdies mit zwei Trio-Abschnitten ­alterniert. Vor allem aber werden in allen Sätzen die Eigenschaften der Klarinette geradezu systematisch vorgestellt: im Kopfsatz der chromatisch wie diatonisch entfaltete Tonraum, kombiniert mit Skalenläufen und gebrochenen Akkorden, im nachfolgenden Larghetto weiträumige melodische Linien, im Menuett der mit dem Instrument verbundene volksmusikalische Ton. Die so auskomponierte Präsen­ tation des Klarinetten-Idioms findet in den abwechslungsreichen Variationen des Finales ihren Höhepunkt – eine Idee übrigens, die später auch von Brahms und Reger in ihren Quintetten auf­ genommen wurde.

Archaische Mythen Jörg Widmann: Labyrinth IV für Sopran und Ensemble Jedes Labyrinth hat seinen eigenen Plan. Ist es offen zwei­ dimensional angelegt, so lässt es sich von außen und von oben be­ trachtet leicht überblicken. Befindet man sich aber darin, erscheint es beängstigend ausweglos. Musikalisch ist dies schon in Johann ­Sebastian Bachs Kleinem harmonischen Labyrinth BWV 591 zu ­beobachten. Für Jörg Widmann jedoch stellt das Labyrinth in philo­ sophischer Dimension eine Denkstruktur dar, die kompositorisch ein „Lebensthema“ geworden ist: von einem ersten Werk für 48 Streicher (Berlin 2005) über ein weiteres für fünf Orchestergruppen (Donaueschingen 2006) und ein drittes für Sopran und Orchester­ gruppen (Köln 2014) bis hin zum Labyrinth IV, das als Auftragswerk der Daniel Barenboim Stiftung im Juni 2019 hier im Pierre Boulez Saal uraufgeführt wurde. Doch nicht nur in den Bezeichnungen dieser Werke finden sich für Widmann die verschlungenen Pfade wieder. Sie sind bereits im schöpferischen Prozess präsent, wenn ein Werk während der Konzeption, der Skizzierung und der Nieder­ schrift allmählich einen eigenen Körper gewinnt und für den Kom­ ponisten zum Lebewesen wird: „In meinen Labyrinthen“, sagt Widmann, „wünsche ich mir das ja geradezu, dass mich das Stück woanders hintreibt.“ Verglichen mit den drei vorhergehenden Werken ist Labyrinth IV für Sopran und Ensemble verhältnismäßig klein besetzt und von komprimierterer Struktur. Die zeitliche Verdichtung ist dabei der Verwendung konkreter Texte geschuldet, die ein scheinbar über Jahrhunderte gespanntes Beziehungsgeflecht offenlegen – auch wenn sich die Auswahl für den Komponisten eher wie zufällig aus den Tiefen der Literatur fügte. Dazu ist die räumliche Disposition nun flexibler, denn das Werk entstand aus der Erfahrung mit dem Pierre Boulez Saal heraus, „für diesen Raum mit seinen labyrinthischen Möglichkeiten. Dass die Sängerin im gesamten Raum herum­irren kann, das hat das Stück erst ermöglicht.“ Mit der etwa 20-minütigen, technisch enorm anspruchsvollen Gesangsszene erzählt Widmann die Geschichte des Minotaurus, jenes mythischen Zwitterwesens mit menschlichem Körper und Stierkopf, das auf Kreta in dem von König Minos erbauten Labyrinth hauste. Vor allem die Athener hatten darunter zu leiden, denn alle neun Jahre mussten sie als Tribut jeweils sieben Jünglinge und Jungfrauen dorthin entsenden – bis sich der Königssohn Theseus selbst einschiffte, um das Ungeheuer

zu töten. In Widmanns Labyrinth IV wird die Begebenheit allerdings aus der Perspektive der Ariadne erzählt – die in diesem Fall nicht den Faden reicht, sondern selbst gegen den grausigen Halbbruder den Dolch erhebt.

Eckpunkte der sechsteiligen Partitur bilden Minotaurus’ Zeugung durch Pasiphaë und einen von Poseidon entsandten Stier – und seine Tötung, die für ihn als Moment der Selbsterkenntnis nach Worten aus Euripides’ Theseus-Fragment möglicherweise eine ­Erlösung darstellte: „Oh unglückliche Mutter, warum nur hast Du mich geboren?“ Der mythischen Handlung zur Seite gestellt werden an zweiter und vorletzter Stelle Verse der deutschen Romantik, die – Ariadne gleichsam in den Mund gelegt – das Drama reflektieren und brechen: das „Kinderlied für ein Ungeheuer“ auf einen Text Clemens Brentanos und das in den Nachthimmel blickende Traurig schau ich in die Höh’ von Heinrich Heine, dessen lyrisches Ich sich rettungslos verloren hat: „Aber meinen eignen Stern / kann ich nirgends dort erblicken. / Hat im güldnen Labyrinth / sich vielleicht verirrt am Himmel, / wie ich selber mich verirrt / in dem irdischen Getümmel.“ Musikalisch erwächst aus der Melodie des stilisierten Kinderlieds als dritter Abschnitt der als Kanon konzipierte instru­ mentale Weg ins Labyrinth. Im Zentrum aber steht, adaptiert aus den Dionysos-Dithyramben von Friedrich Nietzsche, die von Hass­ liebe und Angst geprägte intensive Begegnung mit dem Ungeheuer: „Du drängst mich, drückst mich, / Ha! schon viel zu nahe! / […] / Was willst du dir erfoltern, / Du Folterer!“ In der so gefürchteten wie ersehnten falschen Umarmung der Ariadne („Komm zurück! / Mit allen deinen Martern!“) stirbt schließlich der Minotaurus, dessen letzten Atemzug sie mit den Worten „Ich bin dein Labyrinth…“ begleitet. Damit aber, und mit seiner Komposition als Ganzes, weist Widmann über den antiken Mythos hinaus ins Archetypisch-­ Abgründige: „Der Minotaurus wird stellvertretend getötet – als eine Angst, die wir in uns haben.“

Labyrinthine Musical Connections The Boulez Ensemble Plays Mozart, Schubert, Berg, and Widmann

The concept of the labyrinth contains a fascinating range of associations pointing back to human origins. In Patterns That Connect, their joint project of art history and anthropology, Carl Schuster and Edmund Carpenter argued that “certain paleolithic images, customs, and modes of thought survived in recognizable form into later periods,” maintaining that this was “especially true of paleolithic ‘geometric’ art”—such as the meandering patterns associated with the labyrinth.

At one extreme, a labyrinth was constructed to trap the Minotaur of ancient Crete, holding the monster in wait for its next set of young victims. Yet similar maze-like structures have been used to symbolize spiritual pilgrimages and the quest for healing and ­redemption. Such ambiguity is indeed labyrinthine, its contours and contradictions suggesting a quality that seems to be intimately involved with creativity itself.

Much has been written about the significance of the maze in the development of polyphonic music and in the works of Johann ­Sebastian Bach in particular. And those familiar with Pierre Boulez are well aware of the centrality of the labyrinth as metaphor for his thought and process. His concept of the labyrinthine relationship between works for a given composer applies as well to music history and the maze-like connections between composers across eras.

Tonight’s program spans from the High Classicism of Mozart—in a work spotlighting Jörg Widmann’s own instrument—to the present

day, culminating in an extraordinary recent commission that was conceived quite specifically for the Pierre Boulez Saal. Widmann has even compared this space to a winding labyrinth. It was through a performance here of the music of Schubert (The Shepherd on the Rock, with its unusual combination of solo clarinet and soprano) that he first encountered the soprano Sarah Aristidou. Her unique vocal personality and eagerness to experiment played an important role in Widmann’s conception of Labyrinth IV. The work moreover stands out from his cycle of compositions involving the labyrinth image by virtue of its intense dramatic concision. Setting the mood for such intensity is the extreme compression of gesture in Alban Berg’s Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano.

But prolongation and detours can generate a powerful drama of their own. Schubert’s preoccupation with wanderers and harmonic peregrinations brings labyrinthine paths to mind, as we encounter in the single-movement Quartettsatz. “Only through the enlargement of the temporal scope of musical form,” writes French musicologist Xavier Hascher, “could Schubert convey the sentiments of eternity and otherworldliness which characterize his glimpses into the ideal, and its opposition to the anxious wandering through life’s laby­ rinth.”

Franz Schubert: Quartettsatz in C Minor D 703 Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony in B minor from 1822 is one of the most famous musical torsos of the symphonic repertoire.

The Quartettsatz (which is simply German for “quartet movement”) presents a parallel situation in the medium of chamber music. ­Adding to the mystique of both is the fact that it was not because of the composer’s premature death that these works were left incom­ plete: rather, Schubert seems to have faced a creative roadblock after completing certain sections (one movement for the quartet, two for the “Unfinished” Symphony). Although he made sketches for how to proceed, he decided to move on to other projects. In fact, the extraordinarily prolific Schubert started and abandoned several other compositions as well (both chamber and symphonic). Yet the ­Quartettsatz and the “Unfinished” each represent such a level of mastery that even in their incomplete states they offer a compelling musical experience. The former dates from the end of 1820—a year

after the beloved “Trout” Quintet—and marks an enormous leap forward from Schubert’s previous string quartets. He had written extensively in the medium as a teenager, but those early works were intended for cozy performances by his immediate family (with the composer taking the viola part).

The Quartettsatz seems to have steered Schubert in the direction of his final three masterpieces in the genre. After finishing this movement, Schubert drafted 41 measures of a slow movement in A-flat but then abandoned it altogether. He then took another pause from quartet writing for several years—just as he had after the youthful quartets. Yet already in this piece you can hear anticipations of the life-or-death urgency that characterizes the outer movements of the famous “Death and the Maiden” Quartet of 1826. Like so many of Schubert’s compositions, the Quartettsatz remained an ­unknown gem during the composer’s life (it wasn’t even published until 1870).

Schubert’s choice of C minor for his home key seems to prompt a language of clenched compression—rather as it did for Beethoven.

And in this final decade of his life, Schubert became increasingly obsessed with the legacy of the older master. The sense of ambition that is a signature of his final masterworks already fuels the Quartett­satz, with its highly wrought, agitated opening. Even the second theme, which spins out in a lyrical A-flat, is harried by the restless tempo and rhythmic energy of the whole movement. Schubert also twists conventional sonata form into unexpected harmonic directions (with a hint, at one point, of the suspended harmonies from the Andante of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony). One of the movement’s oddest features is the repression of the opening music. It doesn’t even appear in the recapitulation and is not heard again (after the exposition repeat) until the very end, when abrupt chords shutter the piece.

Berg as Miniaturist: Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano Op. 5 “Alban Berg is an extraordinarily gifted composer, but the state he was in when he came to me was such that his imagination apparently could not work on anything but lieder. Even the piano accompaniments to them were songlike. He was absolutely incapable of writing an instrumental movement or inventing an instrumental

theme.” So wrote Arnold Schoenberg about one of his two bestknown students. Even though Berg’s period of formal studies with him concluded in 1911 after seven years, the young composer ­continued to crave approval from his mentor, whom he revered as a figure of father-like authority.

Written in 1913, the Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano (which Berg dedicated to his former teacher) may have been among the ­recent endeavors Schoenberg had in mind when he issued a severe, traumatizing rebuke to Berg in a meeting they had in Berlin in early summer of that year. One of his critiques appears to have been of Berg’s turn to miniature forms. As the Berg scholar Douglas Jarman writes, the Four Pieces take to even further extremes the miniaturism of his recent Altenberg Songs (which had caused a famous scandal in March 1913), “compress[ing] large-scale dramatic gestures into tiny forms.” They “represent the furthest step Berg took in renouncing distinct thematic and motivic features in favor of a music whose material is generated from the manipulation of small cells…” The Four Pieces were first performed in public on October 17, 1919 in Vienna.

In sharp contrast to the sense of objective distance conveyed in the miniatures of Anton Webern (the other famous Schoenberg student), Berg’s clarinet pieces are still rooted in the world of ­Romantic expressivity—above all in the feelings of despair they communicate. The grouping of four pieces, with inner parts that could be seen as a slow movement and a scherzo, have naturally en­ couraged some commentators to perceive a hidden four-movement sonata plan. Berg places stringent demands on the clarinetist, from sotto voce notes high in the register to flutter-tongue gestures.

Schoenberg’s observation about Berg’s lieder predisposition certainly holds true with this music, which seems at times to touch on the edge of song, the words only remaining undisclosed.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Clarinet Quintet in A Major K. 581 Mozart’s writing for the clarinet ranks among the pinnacles of the literature. He initially fell in love with the sound of the instrument when spending time in Mannheim, with its splendid court orchestra, in 1777–78, and later, in his Vienna years, was drawn to the playing of a fellow Freemason, Anton Stadler. Interested in technical inno­

vations for his instrument, Stadler designed a special clarinet (the so-called “basset clarinet”) with an extended range two tones lower than that of the standard clarinet. It was for Stadler and this instrument that Mozart composed not only the Clarinet Quintet but the ­Clarinet Concerto of his final year and the clarinet solos accompanying a pair of arias in his opera La clemenza di Tito.

The Clarinet Quintet dates from September 1789. The choice of tonality, A major, makes it part of a “family” of works that share a certain lyrical sensibility: it is the key of the Clarinet Concerto and of the K. 488 Piano Concerto. The inclusion of a minuet—thus creating a four-movement work for strings and solo wind—distin­ guishes the Clarinet Quintet from Mozart’s other works for this combination, according to Roger Hellyer, and is “entirely consistent with the strong chamber-music (as opposed to concertante) character­ istics of the work.”

It is fascinating to compare the manifold ways in which Mozart exploits the clarinet’s natural melodious facility in the opening Allegro and in the ensuing Larghetto. His writing for the strings here ­enhances and complements that quality while also responding to the soloist’s virtuoso gestures. The minuet makes room to encompass two contrasting trios, keeping the clarinet offstage for the first of these but reserving a prominent solo role (accompanied by strings) in the second. For the final movement, Mozart settled on a variation format capped with a coda.

Finding a Way Out: Jörg Widmann's Labyrinth IV The theme of the labyrinth has long preoccupied Jörg Widmann.

Labyrinth IV is the latest addition to his ongoing cycle of works in­ spired by the musical and metaphorical potential of mazes. It began with two purely instrumental compositions: Labyrinth for 48 string instruments (2005) and Second Labyrinth for orchestral groups (2006). In 2013–14, Widmann introduced a soprano to the cycle in Third Labyrinth and expanded the temporal scope to nearly 50 ­minutes. The scenario draws on Friedrich Nietzsche’s late-period Dionysian Dithyrambs and a story from the collection Labyrinths by Jorge Luis Borges.

For Labyrinth IV, Widmann found a kindred artistic spirit in the soprano Sarah Aristidou and her attitude of eagerly pushing the

e­ nvelope. The result is a work that intrepidly ventures to extremes —of musical technique, of emotion, indeed of dramatic intensity.

The vocal writing is characterized by wild leaps from stratospheric heights to deep chest voice; elsewhere, the soloist intones in a kind of ritualistic spell. While Widmann continues to develop some of the threads found in Third Labyrinth, this latest work is by contrast highly compressed and written for a smaller instrumental ensemble.

The score illuminates a harrowing and original dramaturgy that Widmann has designed by compiling his own libretto from originally unconnected poetic sources. The perceived “throughline” is the composer’s invention.

Widmann imagines an alternative to the famous ancient myth of the monstrous Minotaur, offspring of King Minos of Crete’s wife Pasiphaë and a white bull she was cursed by Poseidon to love. After being contained in a labyrinth designed by Daedalus, the Minotaur became the cause of much suffering as King Minos ritually sacrificed Athenian youths, sending them into the maze to be devoured— until the Athenian Theseus managed to kill the Minotaur with the help of Minos’s daughter Ariadne, whose love for Theseus inspired a clever plan. But Theseus is entirely absent from Labyrinth IV. ­Indeed, the scenario focuses solely on the perspective of Ariadne and her relationship with the Minotaur.

The score juxtaposes a wide range of poetic texts over five of its six sections, which Widmann titles as follows (the source authors are indicated in parentheses): (1) Conception of the Minotaur (a brief fragment from a rediscovered fragment of a play involving Theseus by Euripides—in ancient Greek); (2) Nursery Rhyme for a Monster (Clemens Brentano); (3) Going into the Labyrinth (this is the only wordless section, a purely instrumental canon); (4) In the Labyrinth (Friedrich Nietzsche); (5) Sadly I Gaze Up into the Sky (Heinrich Heine); and (6) Killing the Minotaur (also Nietzsche).

The piece opens by imagining a primal scene in which “Ariadne is watching as the Minotaur is conceived—so it’s not completely clear whether the sounds of the soprano represent lust or shock,” as Widmann explains, adding that it is important to recall that the beast is Ariadne’s half-brother. For the Euripides text (in Greek, “O miserable mother, tell me why did you bear me?”), the soprano “hums a psychedelic melody.” This first section sets the tone of ­uncompromising darkness and disorientation that Widmann boldly explores throughout—its counterpart most evident in the final ­section. In powerful contrast is the childlike innocence, touching

on folk-like music, of sections 2 and 5. The Brentano verses accom­ pany Ariadne as she leads the Minotaur into the labyrinth. Heine’s poem mirrors this lyrical oasis with dramatic shift of perspective to the open night sky as the Minotaur—in a “flashback” imagined by Ariadne—looks above and sees no way out in any direction, even under the open sky.

Alluding to the rich history of musical labyrinths as found in early music or the complex structures of Bach, the purely instrumental third section is a canon built from many voices. Their layering ­becomes a musical symbol of the labyrinth itself—an architecture that continually opens up into new pathways and can have no closure, no evident “way out.”

Following this interlude, the soprano—who throughout the work moves to different stations in the hall, enacting a journey through the labyrinth—comes back in section 4. Here, Widmann recontextualizes Nietzsche’s text, imagining that these are words Ariadne might address to the Minotaur. The musical temperature becomes feverish, the aggression and violence of the soundscape suggesting how she is hunted and haunted by this monstrous phenom­ enon. Heine’s poem, symmetrically positioned to echo the lyrical setting of Brentano in section 2, gives way to a shocking denoue­ ment in the final section.

In Widmann’s vision, Ariadne is “both fascinated and repulsed by the Minotaur,” whose demise—heralded by a pair of fanfaring trumpets—here remains ambiguous. Labyrinth IV synthesizes the ancient Greek understanding of “this tragic legacy”—with its ­unsparing sense of the sublime, of recognizing the tragic truth of human existence—with a modern psychological interpretation that such writers as Friedrich Dürrenmatt have posited: that the Minotaur symbolizes the terror and dread of existence itself and is wholly ­internal, a projection of the fears and panic of its victims who imagine that the unseen beast must be lurking around the next corner of the labyrinth…. As Ariadne realizes in the final moments before blackout, “I am your labyrinth.”

In Memoriam Sir Peter Jonas 1946–2020

Es gibt wenige solcher Begegnungen im Leben. Man trifft einen fremden Menschen und fühlt sich wie im Tiefschnee bei strahlender Sonne, wie auf einem Surfbrett im Meer, wie beim Fallen in ein frisch bezogenes Federbett. Meine Mutter hätte wohl gesagt: „Man fühlt sich wie eine Prinzessin.“ Aber das trifft es nicht. Zu viel Status, Hierarchie, Privilegien, Verpflichtungen.

Nein, Sir Peter Jonas zu begegnen, machte glücklich, leicht und befreit.

Um die Bedeutung dieser Aussage ermessen zu können, das ­Ungeheuerliche, welches in ihr steckt, muss man wissen, mit wie viel Unsicherheit und Skrupeln ich unseren Treffen entgegenblickte.

Immer wollte ich etwas von ihm, etwas, das mir groß und riesig ­erschien, vermessen und fast unverschämt. Ob er denn bereit wäre, als Kurator das WZB zu beraten und zu unterstützen? Ob er denn helfen könne bei einem Fest zum 50-jährigen Bestehen des WZB? Ich wollte von ihm viel Zeit, viel Aufmerksamkeit, viel Hilfe.

Dabei war klar, dass vieles ohne ihn überhaupt nicht gelingen könnte.

Ich fühlte mich belastet und abhängig, nicht leicht und frei.

Abrakadabra. Bei jedem Gespräch gelang es ihm, die Rollen blitzschnell neu zu ordnen, nein: sie abzuschaffen. Ein wichtiges Handwerkszeug meiner Disziplin, soziale Rollen, gab es plötzlich nicht mehr. Er bedankte sich für die Ehre solcher Anfragen, ver­ wickelte mich ernsthaft in Gespräche, ob er dem WZB intellektuell und inhaltlich überhaupt gewachsen sei, ob ich keine Sorge hätte, dass er uns alle nur enttäuschen könnte. Er ließ mich mit Daniel Barenboim sprechen, wissend, dass ich fest damit gerechnet hatte, bestenfalls Mäuschen am Rande des Spielfelds großer Männer zu sein. Er machte sich nicht klein und mich nicht groß. Er war nicht auf Komplimente aus. Er stellte Augenhöhe her, übersprang das Abmustern, Abwägen, Lavieren. Und war dabei immer verblüffend offen.

Dies ließ ihn aus unserer Zeit fallen. Er sprach detailreich über seine Krankheiten, ohne um Mitleid zu werben. Er sprach über die „gorgeous bodies“, die sich zum 50sten des WZB von der Decke des Pierre Boulez Saals abseilen mögen, ohne einen Hauch von Sexismus. Er kam in Hemd und Flatterschal, ohne damit ein State­ ment zu setzen, sich distinguiert abzugrenzen. Er stand oft einfach da, groß, dünn und lachend. Ich wusste, dass er gerade von einer schrecklichen Chemotherapie kam, ihm elend war, niemand wusste, wie viel Zeit ihm noch bleiben würde. Er ließ mich an seinem Leben teilhaben. Ja, das war es wohl: Teilhabe.

There are only a few such encounters in life. You meet a stranger and feel as if you were surrounded by deep powder snow in bright sunshine, as if you were standing on a surfboard on the sea, or falling into a freshly made feather-bed. As my mother might have said, “You feel like a princess.” But that is not what it was.

Too much status, hierarchy, privilege, obligation. On the contrary: meeting Sir Peter Jonas made you feel happy, light, and liberated.

To fully appreciate the meaning of this statement, its outrageous­ ness, one has to understand the extent of the insecurity and scruples I felt before our meetings. Invariably, I wanted something from him, something that seemed big, even huge to me, presumptuous and almost impertinent. Might he be willing to counsel and sup­ port the WZB as a curator? Might he be able to help organize the festivities celebrating the WZB’s 50-year anniversary? I asked for a lot of time, a lot of attention, a lot of help from him. And it was al­ ways obvious that many things would never work without him. I felt weighed down and dependent, not light and liberated.

Abracadabra. In every conversation we had, he managed to re­ verse our roles with lightning speed, even more: to abolish them.

Social roles, such an important tool of my discipline, suddenly ceased to exist. He thanked me for the honor of such inquiries, be­ gan serious conversations about whether he was equal to the WZB in intellect and content, whether I was not worried he might only let us all down. He let me talk to Daniel Barenboim, knowing that I had been fully expecting to be a fly on the wall while great men took the playing field. He did not minimize himself, nor did he ag­ grandize me. He was not out fishing for compliments. He put him­ self at eye level, skipping the gauging, the weighing, the maneuver­ ing. And all the while, he was astoundingly open.

This made him seem a man not quite of our times. He spoke about his illnesses in detail without asking for pity. He spoke about the “gorgeous bodies” that would perform acrobatics suspended from the ceiling of the Pierre Boulez Saal without a trace of sexism.

He arrived in a shirt and fluttery scarf without turning that into a statement, without wanting to distinguish himself. Often, he would just stand there, tall, thin, and laughing. I knew that he had just come from a terrible chemotherapy session, that he was feeling mis­ erable, and no one knew how much time he had left. He allowed me to participate in his life.
