Schattierungen des Lyrischen Cellosonaten von Brahms, Rachmaninow und Prokofjew

Mstislaw Rostropowitsch, der Sergej Prokofjew den Anstoß zu seiner heute abend zu hörenden Cellosonate gab und sie später auch uraufführte, hat die besondere Klangqualität seines Instruments am besten in Worte zu f­assen ­gewusst: Der Cello-Ton, so befand er, sei einer Tenorstimme vergleichbar und damit zutiefst „heroisch“ im C ­ harakter.

Tatsächlich ist das Cello in einer sehr vollen, ja der menschlichsten aller Tonlagen zuhause, die – wie das Programm von Pablo Ferrández und Denis Kozhukhin zeigt – eine Fülle an außerordentlich lyrischen Werken i­nspiriert hat.

Doch diesen Lyrismus nur mit der Natur des Instruments zu erklären, wäre zu einfach – seine Ursprünge sind ­komplexer. Immerhin ist das musikalische Idiom etwa in Prokofjews Cellosonate aus dem Jahr 1949 wohl auch das Ergebnis von vorsichtiger Zurückhaltung angesichts der kulturpolitischen Erlässe Andrej Schdanows aus den späten 1940er Jahren, in denen Stalins Mann für die Kultur eine Liste „musikalischer Vergehen“ spezifiziert hatte, die ­Prokofjew und seine Komponistenkollegen von nun an zu unterlassen hatten.

Johannes Brahms und Sergej Rachmaninow komponierten glücklicherweise in – zumindest politisch – unbeschwerteren Zeiten. Die lyrische Qualität von Brahms’ Sonate für Cello und Klavier in F-Dur, entstanden 1886 während eines Sommeraufenthalts am Thuner See in der Schweiz, verrät 5

den nachhaltigen Einfluss der Altistin Hermine Spies, die Brahms dort besuchte und deren Stimme in diesem Werk stets mitklingt. Brahms’ heimliche Gefühle für Hermine führten letztlich nirgendwohin, die sehnsüchtigen Töne in Rachmaninows Cellosonate dagegen bahnen sich ihren Weg zum Durchbruch – nicht im Sinne von amouröser, sondern von künstlerischer Erfüllung, denn mit einer Reihe von erfolgreichen Uraufführungen zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts konnte der Komponist endlich die Geister der Vergangenheit hinter sich lassen.

Von Erfolgen begleitet war auch das rastlose Leben des jungen Prokofjew, sowohl vor als auch nach der Revolution von 1917. Anders als Rachmaninow, der in den Wirren des Umsturzes ebenfalls sein Heimatland verlassen hatte, hielt Prokofjew seine Verbindung zur Sowjetunion ganz bewusst aufrecht, ging zehn Jahre später dort sogar auf Konzerttournee. In der Folge intensivierte er seine Kontakte nach Moskau und Leningrad und erwarb 1932 eine Wohnung in der Hauptstadt. Nach seiner Rückkehr in die Heimat konnte er sich mit der sowjetischen Staatsführung zunächst gut ­stellen, sollte aber bald – wie etwa auch Schostakowitsch – mit dem Zensurapparat in Berührung kommen.

Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg hatte Andrej Schdanow, Stalins kulturelles Sprachrohr, eine Reihe von Dekreten ­erlassen, die die offizielle Parteilinie in künstlerischen Fragen für die gesamte Sowjetunion festlegten, zunächst für literarische Zeitschriften, bald aber auch für den Film und schließlich, am 10. Februar 1948, auch für die klassische ­Musik.Vier Tage später wurden zahlreiche Werke Prokofjews auf den Index gesetzt und der Komponist sah sich – konfrontiert mit Vorwürfen wie „formalistische Auswüchse“, „antidemokratische Tendenzen“, „Verstöße gegen die ­Prinzipien der klassischen Musik“ und „Verbreitung der Atonalität“ – gezwungen, seine „Verfehlungen“ einzugestehen.

Düstere Zeiten.

In der Kritik stand 1948 auch Nikolai Mjaskowski, einer von Prokofjews ältesten Freunden. Mjaskowski war Prokofjew bei der Überarbeitung seines Cellokonzertes zur Hand ­gegangen, das dieser kurz nach seiner Rückkehr in die ­Sowjetunion geschrieben hatte. 1949 war er erneut für die Entstehung eines Cello-Werkes von Prokofjew von zentraler Bedeutung: Nachdem er die fesselnde Aufführung einer Cello-Sonate Mjaskowskis durch Mstislaw Rostropowitsch und Swjatoslav Richter erlebt hatte, beschloss Prokofjew,

selbst ein Werk für diese Besetzung zu schreiben.

Prokofjews Sonate ist, zweifellos im Bewusstsein der Kritik von oberster Stelle, vergleichsweise geradlinig gestaltet.

Sie beginnt mit einer nachdenklichen Kantilene im Cello, begleitet von einer wiegenden Figur im Klavier. Chromatische Einfärbungen und Modulationen durchziehen den gesamten Satz, der geführt vom Klavier zunächst in ein eher lyrisches Thema, später zu kräftigeren, fanfarenhaften Figuren übergeht. Die reichhaltige Textur des Klavierparts erinnert ­beinahe an ein Klavierkonzert – die Uraufführung der Sonate spielte ebenfalls Richter gemeinsam mit Rostropowitsch –, im zweiten Thema gewinnt dann aber das lyrische Element die Oberhand. Ein fugenartig einsetzender Abschnitt, ­Moderato animato überschrieben, leitet die Durchführung ein, in der die gesanglichen mit den rastlosen Elementen der Sonate kontrastiert werden. Der lyrische Grundcharakter geht jedoch trotz aller Energie nie verloren, das Stück bleibt immer optimistisch, ganz so wie der „Sozialistische Realismus“ es verlangte – um beinahe jeden Preis.

Der zweite Satz ist de facto ein Scherzo mit Trio, ersteres ausgelassen und übermütig, letzteres ein ähnlich gefühlvoller Gesang wie das Seitenthema des Eröffnungssatzes. Auch hier bleiben die bissigen Momente im Hintergrund. Das Finale schließlich ist ein offenherziges Rondo, in dem das Klavier die schwungvolle Entschlossenheit von Prokofjews Klavier­ konzerten in Erinnerung ruft und das Cello Lyrik ebenso wie Witz beisteuert. Die Kulturbehörden zeigten sich tatsächlich besänftigt und die Sonate erlebte am 1. März 1950 ihre Uraufführung im Moskauer Konservatorium. Es war das letzte Kammermusikwerk, das Prokofjew vor seinem Tod drei Jahre später vollenden sollte.

Wie sein jüngerer Landsmann schrieb auch Rachmaninow nur eine einzige Cellosonate. Entstanden 1901, blieb sie einer seiner wenigen Abstecher in die Kammermusik. Tatsächlich gab Rachmaninow nach dieser Sonate die Komposition kleindimensionierter ­Instrumentalwerke ganz auf. Nichtsdestotrotz strahlt das Werk das Selbstbewusstsein eines Komponisten aus, der sich e­ ntschlossen den (Selbst-)Zweifeln 7

stellt, die ihn seit dem Misserfolg seiner E ­ rsten Symphonie 1897 verfolgt hatten. In dieser Hinsicht ist die Sonate mit dem zur selben Zeit e­ ntstandenen Zweiten Klavierkonzert vergleichbar. Die üppigen Melodiebögen sind gleichmäßig unter beiden Instrumenten aufgeteilt; nur manchmal droht der Klavierpart – auch hier an das Klavierkonzert erinnernd – zu dominieren und erfordert deshalb größte Zurück­ haltung und Virtuosität in der Interpretation. Zweifellos spielte Rachmaninow sein Instrument mit gewinnender Zurückhaltung, als er das Stück gemeinsam mit dessen ­Widmung­s­­­träger Anatoli Brandukow nur zwei Monate nach der erfolgreichen Premiere des Klavierkonzerts am 2. Dezember 1901 uraufführte.

Die Grundtonart des Stücks, g-moll, wird im einleitenden Lento durchweg nur angedeutet; erst zu Beginn des Allegro moderato seiner mitreißenden Melodik und den wirbelnden Sechzehnteln im Klavier wird sie geradeheraus affirmiert.

Darauf folgt das nachdenklichere, rhapsodische Seitenthema, vorgestellt vom Klavier, das auf seinem Weg in die Dominante die Durparallele streift. Der ganze Abschnitt ist von der Molltonika eingefärbt und erinnert auch damit an die ­berauschende Musik des Klavierkonzerts; gleichzeitig wirft hier auch die Zweite Symphonie von 1906/07 schon ihre Schatten voraus. Ein spannungsgeladeneres Allegro scherzando in c-moll schließt sich an. Das Cello springt hier zunächst zwischen Pizzicato und Spiccato hin und her, bevor es erneut ins lyrische Singen gerät. Diese gefühlsgeladene Musik steht zunächst in Es-Dur, kurz darauf wandert der Satz mit einer weiteren ergreifenden Melodie ins noch sattere As-Dur. Mit Emotionen wird nicht gegeizt, besonders nicht auf dem Höhepunkt, der zum Allegro scherzando des Beginns zurückführt. Ähnlich geht es im anschließenden Andante weiter, ­wiederum eingeleitet durch das Klavier. Die beiden Instrumente umschlingen sich gegenseitig mit Themen und ­Gegenthemen und zeigen dabei Rachmaninows melodische Meisterschaft. Schließlich endet die Cellosonate, genau wie die Zweite Symphonie, mit der Rachmaninow seinen ­Kritikern resolut entgegentrat, in einem beschwingten Tanz.

Auch dieses aufgedrehte Rondo voller wagemutiger Sprünge, mit dem das Duo dem Abschluss entgegen stürmt, ist im Kern lyrisch – jedoch ohne die nostalgische Note der vorhergehenden Sätze.

Zwischen den beiden russischen Werken steht Johannes Brahms’ zweite Sonate für Cello und Klavier. 21 Jahre trennen sie von Brahms erstem Beitrag zu dieser Gattung aus dem Jahr 1865. Die Sonate eröffnet mit einer kühnen harmonischen Geste, ähnlich wie die drei Jahre zuvor entstandene Dritte Symphonie. Hier klingt das Eröffnungsmotiv allerdings eher fiebrig, bis das Cello weit in die Höhen des Violinschlüssels abhebt. Auch dies wirkt bisweilen fast neurotisch, und erst wenn Cello und Klavier sich gemeinsam in Richtung ­Seitenthema bewegen, kommt die Musik wirklich in Fluss.

In der Durchführung, die mit einer überraschenden Modulation nach fis-moll eröffnet, geben sich die beiden Instrumente durchaus streitlustig, danach kehrt die unruhige Musik des Satzbeginns wieder. Die Stimmung nimmt einen geradezu beängstigenden Tonfall an, das Cello rumort am unteren Ende seines Tonumfangs, bis das Klavier mit erst waghalsigen, dann nachdenklichen Figuren zur Reprise überleitet.

Die Modulation in die „Neapolitaner“-Tonart zu Beginn der Durchführung des ersten Satzes ließ die Grundtonart fis-moll des zweiten, Adagio affetuoso überschriebenen Satzes bereits anklingen. Im Grunde ist der Satz ein beseeltes Lied, das Brahms’ reifen, „herbstlichen“ Stil vorwegnimmt.

Das Adagio moduliert im zweiten Abschnitt einen Halbton nach unten und schwankt zwischen f-moll und dem verwandten As-Dur hin und her, bevor die Tonika mit noch überschwänglicherem Ausdruck wieder erreicht wird.

F-moll wird dann zur Grundtonart des anschließenden Scherzos mit einem für Brahms typischen, virtuosen Klavierpart. Dies verweist, zusammen mit einer weiteren abrupten Modulation (nach e-moll) zurück auf den Eröffnungssatz; das Trio in F-Dur bietet nur eine kurze Atempause.

Es bereitet den Weg für das unbekümmerte Finale, in dem sich die Spannungen der vorhergehenden Sätze schließlich lösen. Obwohl es auch hier durchaus nicht immer einmütig zugeht und generell eine harmonische Tendenz zur Molltonika besteht, ziehen Cello und Klavier doch an einem Strang und erreichen gemeinsam leidenschaftliche Höhepunkte und schließlich ein liedhaftes Seitenthema in b-moll (hier zeigt sich der Einfluss von Hermine Spies).

Materials kennzeichnen den Satz insgesamt, der umwerfend energisch endet – und erstmals interpretiert wurde von Brahms am Klavier und Robert Hausmann am Cello.

Differing Shades of Lyricism Cello Sonatas by Brahms, Rachmaninoff, and Prokofiev

It was Mstislav Rostropovich, the inspiration for the work by Sergei Prokofiev heard tonight and the performer at its premiere, who came closest to describing the unique sound of the cello. It had a voice, he maintained, that was tenorial in quality and therefore profoundly heroic in nature.

Certainly, the cello occupies that richest, most human part of the register, inspiring so many lyrical works, as witnessed throughout Pablo Ferrández and Denis Kozhukhin’s program.

But the roots of that lyricism are more complex to define than a simple case of cello’s cause and composers’ effect. After all, the idiom found in Prokofiev’s Sonata, composed in 1949, may well be a cautious response to the Zhdanov ­Decrees of the late 1940s, in which Stalin’s cultural envoy had detailed a list of musical crimes that Prokofiev, like all of his composing colleagues, would have to avoid.

Johannes Brahms and Sergei Rachmaninoff were, thankfully, composing in easier times, at least politically speaking.

The lyricism of Brahms’s Sonata for Cello and Piano in F major, written during a summer vacation on Lake Thun in Switzerland in 1886, speaks of the enduring influence of the contralto Hermine Spies, who visited Brahms there and whose voice breathes through the lines of this work. Brahms’s yearning for Hermine would not, ultimately, lead to happiness, but the longing tones that characterize so much of ­Rachmaninoff ’s Cello Sonata find their way to triumph.

This was not an amorous conclusion but an artistic one, as the composer vanquished former ghosts with a sequence of successful premieres at the beginning of the 20th century.

A spirit of ­optimism

Triumph likewise typified the peripatetic life of the young Prokofiev, both before and after the Revolution. But unlike Rachmaninoff, who also left his homeland in the wake of 1917, Prokofiev studiously maintained links with Russia, even touring the Soviet lands a decade later. Consequently, he decided to build more lasting bridges with Moscow and Leningrad and in 1932 secured an apartment in the capital.

On returning home, Prokofiev managed to keep on the good side of the Soviet authorities, but like Shostakovich would soon experience their censure.

Following World War II, ­Andrey Zhdanov, Stalin’s cultural spokesman, issued various d­ ecrees underlining official ­approaches to artistic matters throughout the Union. At first, these focused on literary journals, but soon turned their attention to the film industry and finally, on February 10, 1948, the classical music world. The last of these decrees was followed, four days later, by a ban on many of Prokofiev’s works, and the composer was forced to admit his “wrongs” when charges of “formalistic distortions,” “anti-­democratic tendencies,” “rejection of the principles of classical music” and “dissemination of atonality” were put to him. It was a dismal time.

Another composer criticized in 1948 was Nikolai ­Myaskovsky, one of Prokofiev’s oldest friends. Indeed, ­Myaskovsky had been particularly helpful with revisions to the Cello Concerto Prokofiev had composed on first returning to the Soviet Union. In 1949 he would again prove ­crucial to the development of another cello project, when Mstislav Rostropovich and Sviatoslav Richter gave a ­compelling performance of one of Myaskovsky’s cello ­sonatas and duly inspired Prokofiev to write his own.

No doubt reflective of state disapproval, Prokofiev’s ­Sonata is comparatively straightforward. It begins with a pensive cello cantilena, accompanied by a rocking figure in the piano. There are chromatic inflections and modulations throughout the movement, which first moves towards a more lyrical theme, led by the pianist, and then to bolder, fanfaric statements. Rich piano textures suggest an almost concerto-like approach—Richter was also to give the ­premiere of this Sonata with Rostropovich—before lyricism wins through in the second subject. A Moderato animato section, beginning like a fugue, announces the development, in which the songful and hectic sides of the Sonata’s character are juxtaposed. Throughout, however, energy never over13

whelms lyricism, maintaining a spirit of optimism that was key to “social realism”—almost at any cost.

The second movement is effectively a scherzo and trio, with the former providing high jinks and the latter being as sweetly sung as the second subject in the first movement.

Again, caustic elements are kept at bay. And then the finale offers an open-hearted rondo, with the piano recalling the peppy resolve of Prokofiev’s concertos for the instrument and the cello providing both lyricism and wit. The authorities were duly mollified and the Sonata had its premiere at the Moscow Conservatory on March 1, 1950. Sadly, it was the last chamber music composition Prokofiev completed before his death three years later.

Like his young compatriot, Rachmaninoff wrote but one cello sonata. It was composed in 1901, one of few ­inroads into chamber music. Indeed, Rachmaninoff would abandon small-scale instrumental pieces altogether after writing this Sonata. Nonetheless, it is a work filled with confidence, as the composer confronted the demons caused by the failure of his First Symphony in 1897. In that regard, the Sonata shares its triumph with the contemporaneous Second Piano Concerto. Here, rich melodic strands are shared equally between the instrumentalists, though at times, again echoing the Concerto, the piano threatens to dominate, requiring great restraint as well as virtuosity from any player.

Rachmaninoff undoubtedly performed with disarming control when he accompanied the work’s dedicatee, Anatoly Brandukov, at the premiere on December 2, 1901 (just two months after the successful first performance of the Second Piano Concerto).

The Sonata’s home key of G minor is constantly implied during the introductory Lento, though it is only stated ­outright at the start of the Allegro moderato, with its rousing melodies and whirling piano 16th notes. A more pensive, rhapsodic second subject follows, heralded by the piano, which then passes through the relative major on its way to the dominant. This section is tinged with the swooning tonic minor, again recalling the headiest music of the recent Concerto, as well as looking ahead to the Second Symphony 14

Emotion and luscious melody

(1906–7). A more antagonistic Allegro scherzando follows, in C minor. The cello constantly switches between pizzicato and spiccato textures, before blooming, once more, into lyrical life. This emotive music is in the relative key of E-flat major, though soon moves to an even more luscious A-flat major for another affecting melody. No emotion is downplayed, particularly in the eruption that leads back to the Allegro scherzando.

Further bounties are offered in the Andante, again introduced by the piano. The two players twist melodies and countermelodies around each other in a winning display of Rachmaninoff ’s tuneful gift. Finally, as in the Second Symphony, in which the composer resolutely countered his ­critics, the Cello Sonata finishes with a bold, elated dance. Its giddy rondo, full of audacious leaps, also has a lyrical heart, though without the nostalgia that characterized preceding movements, as the two instrumentalists drive towards a thrilling close.

Between the two Russian works stands Brahms’s Second Cello Sonata. 21 years separate it from his first contribution to the genre, completed in 1865. The Sonata opens with a bold harmonic gesture, not unlike that in the Third Symphony of three years earlier. Here, however, the motif sounds rather febrile, before the cello soon strides ahead, sailing high up into the treble clef. Occasionally, this too sounds neurotic and it is only when the cello and piano move in tandem towards the second subject that the material becomes truly fluid. A combative relationship returns in the development, opening with a surprising shift to F-sharp minor, followed by more of the restive music from the beginning of the movement. This then takes on a menacing tone, with the cello growling in the depths of its range, ­before the piano provides a sequence of daring and then reflective gestures, leading to the recapitulation.

The modulation to the “Neapolitan” key at the beginning of the development section in the first movement presages the tonic, F-sharp major, of the following Adagio affetuoso.

This is, in essence, a soulful song, prognostic of Brahms’s late “autumnal” style. The Adagio modulates down a semitone for the second section, wavering between F minor and its 15

relative, A-flat major, before returning to the tonic with even more fulsome expression. F minor becomes the home key of the ensuing scherzo, featuring one of Brahms’s virtuoso piano parts. This, in turn, harks back to the first movement, complete with another disruptive modulation (to E minor), before the F-major trio provides a brief moment of relaxation.

It acts as forerunner to the blithe finale, in which the tensions of the previous moments finally dissipate. While there are confrontations here too, as well as a tendency to drift towards the tonic minor, the cello and piano nonetheless work more or less in tandem, driving towards impassioned climaxes and moving into a lied-like B-flat minor theme (reflective of the presence of Hermine Spies). Fluidity of form and sheer variety of material typify the movement, which ends with a dazzling flurry—first heard with Brahms at the piano and Robert Hausmann playing the cello.
