Si queremos sentarnos utilizamos una silla, para hacer la colada una lavadora, para ver encendemos una luz… Objetos de múltiples diseños y funciones que nos han acompañado a lo largo de la vida y que nos muestran que a medida que el mundo cambia también lo hacen los objetos.

Tras 11 paradas, podemos bajar en el Cementeri del Est. En un minuto estaremos en el Cementerio de Poblenou, el primero históricamente de la ciudad, donde contemplar mausoleos modernistas y de estilo neoclásico.

Al salir del cementerio, podemos seguir andando, por Carrer del Taulat hacia Carrer de la Ciutat de Granada y giraremos a la izquierda hacia Carrer de Roc Boronat. Siguiendo esta calle en 15 minutos estaremos en nuestro destino, la Rambla del Poblenou.

After 11 stops you can get off at the Cementeri del Est. Within one minute you will arrive at the Poble Nou cemetery, the first recorded cemetery in Barcelona, where you can admire modernist and neoclassical mausoleums. As you leave the cemetery, you should continue down Carrer del Taulat until you reach Carrer de la Ciutat de Granada, and then take a left towards Carrer de Roc Boronat. Keep walking down this street for 15 minutes and you will reach your destination, la Rambla del Poble Nou.

Os aconsejamos conocer a fondo una de las ramblas más populares de Barcelona, fruto del plan Cerdà y cuyos orígenes se remontan a 1853. Este paseo bullicioso del Poblenou, que une mar y montaña, está flanqueado por edificios modernistas, salpicado de estatuas y repleto de establecimientos y bares. Imprescindible ver el Casino de la Aliança.

A la hora de comer, y según vuestras preferencias una buena elección pueden ser los restaurantes Calamarga o Kalamata (ver pag.45).

El antiguo núcleo industrial

La primera hora de la tarde invita a deambular por el antiguo núcleo industrial del distrito, hoy convertido en la zona 22@, sede de empresas tecnológicas, de diseño y universidades.

Antiguas fábricas y más 30 de chimeneas repartidas por el barrio dan testimonio del pasado industrial. En este recorrido es imprescindible visitar la actual sede de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra, instalada en la antigua fábrica textil Ca l’Aranyó; Can Felipa, convertido hoy en centro cívico, y la antigua metalúrgica Can Girona.

La Rambla

We recommend that you take the time to soak up one of Barcelona’s most popular ramblas, a product of the Cerdà Plan dating back to 1853. This bustling Poble Nou promenade linking the mountains to the sea is lined with modernist buildings, dotted with statues and full of cafés and bars. You must visit the Casino de la Aliança.

Depending on your tastes, some good dining options could be the Calamarga or Kalamata restaurants (see page 45).

The old industrial centre

Early afternoon is a great time to wander around the district’s old industrial centre, which is now known as the 22@ district: a hub of design and technology companies and universities.

Old factories and over 30 chimneys are a reminder of the neighbourhood’s industrial past. You must take the time along this route to visit the current headquarters of Pompeu Fabra University, which is based in the former Ca l’Aranyó textile factory; Can Felipa, now used as a civic centre; and the former Can Girona metalwork factory. Barcelona Turisme also offers a guided architecture tour*.

Why not head back to the Rambla de Poble Nou and try one of the city’s most traditional horchatas? Find it at Tío Che. Their clients have changed over the years since they began serving the neighbourhood’s working class, but its delicious flavour remains the same.

And later, before heading back to the hotel, you can round off the night by getting a drink at Razzmatazz (Almogàvers 122/ Pamplona 88. Metro Marina (L1)/Bogatell (L4), not far from Poble Nou. This club is the home of one of the most famous hotspots of Barcelona nightlife.

# El Barrio Gótico comprende lo que antiguamente

se llamaba barrio de la catedral. Aquí se encuentran los grandes edificios góticos que señalan el apogeo de la ciudad y su cultura en la Edad Media.

También se conservan los restos de las antiguas fortificaciones y palacios que fundaron los romanos sobre el Mons Taber, como el templo dedicado a Augusto y las murallas. Nuestro itinerario empieza en la Plaça Nova.

1 # Portal del Bisbe Flanqueado por dos torres cilíndricas de la antigua muralla romana, al lado del actual Palacio Episcopal.

2 # Palacio Episcopal Calle del Bisbe Irurita. Edificado a finales del siglo XII y principios del XIII. 3 # Plaça de Sant Felip Neri (Pasado el Palacio Episcopal a la derecha). Uno de los rincones más poéticos de la ciudad.

4 # Casa del Arcediano o casa de l´Ardiaca Carrer de Santa Llúcia. Fue levantada sobre las murallas romanas, como residencia, en el siglo XV, del arcediano de la catedral. Es notable el patio tipo claustro, que centra una fuente gótica.

5 # Interior de la catedral Tres naves de crucero y veintinueve capillas laterales, en una de las cuales, la del Santísimo, se venera el Cristo de Lepanto. Es de admirar: El coro de tallas medievales y renacentistas, el Altar Mayor y la cripta de Santa Eulalia.

6 # Claustros de la catedral Bellísimo jardín central de palmeras y magnolias.

Interesantes verjas de hierro forjado.

7 # Puerta de la Piedad Acceso al claustro de la catedral. En el tímpano destaca una Piedad labrada en madera, de escuela flamenca.

8 # Casa de los Canónigos o dels Canonges Edificio gótico del siglo XIV, restaurado. Un paso superior cruza la calle del Bisbe Irurita.

9 # Centre Excursionista de Catalunya Carrer Paradís,10. En su interior se conservan las columnas romanas que pertenecieron al templo dedicado a Augusto.

Paseando por la ciudad # La Rambla

# La Rambla, que se extiende entre la Plaça de

Catalunya y el puerto, fue durante siglos el corazón de la ciudad, y aún hoy día sigue siendo la vía más representativa, popular y cosmopolita de la ciudad.

Nuestro itinerario comienza en la cabecera de la Rambla, donde ésta se abre a la Pl. de Catalunya.

1 # Font de Canaletes.

Fuente de hierro del siglo XIX. Uno de los símbolos de la ciudad.

2 # Iglesia de Belén.

En la esquina con la calle del Carme. Antigua iglesia de los jesuitas. Interior de estilo gótico catalán.

3 # Palau Moja.

Situado enfrente de la iglesia de Belén. Casa señorial de principios del siglo XVIII.

4 # Palau de la Virreina. (Rambla, 99) Uno de los edificios más suntuosos de La Rambla.

En los bajos hay una Oficina de información Cultural.

5 # Mercado de Sant Josep o de la “Boqueria”.

Construcción de hierro que alberga uno de los mercados de alimentación más típicos y tradicionales.

6 # Pla de la Boqueria.

Recibe este nombre el llano comprendido entre la calle Hospital y la calle de la Boquería. En el suelo hay un pavimento de Joan Miró.

7 # Gran Teatro del Liceo.

Es uno de los edificios emblemáticos de la Rambla.

Inagurado en 1847, se ha convertido en uno de los primeros escenarios líricos del mundo.

8 # Palau Güell. (Carrer Nou de la Rambla, 3) Obra de Antonio Gaudí, construida como residencia en Barcelona del conde Güell.

9 # Plaça Reial.

Plaza porticada en edificios uniformes. Fuente de hierro en el centro. Las farolas son obra de Gaudí.

10 # Museo de Cera.

Edificio construido en 1867 forma parte del Patrimonio Arquitectónico Nacional.

11 # Reials Drassanes.

Al salir podemos contemplar la ciudad desde el mar en las Golondrinas, barcazas de dos pisos que realizan recorridos por el puerto. Siguiendo el recorrido por El Moll de la Fusta se puede disfrutar de la espléndida vista. » “Eixample” means extension and here it refers to the urban expansion of the city which was carried out in the second half of the 19th Century according tho the plans drawn by Ildefons Cerdà. The “Eixample”, which is divided into two by the Rambla de Catalunya, is of greatest interesnt from the point of view of “Modernism”on the right and it is there that we have routed our itinerary.

Gaudí

Antoni Gaudí Cornet # Nació en Reus, en el 1852. Realizó los estudios de arquitectura en la Escuela Provincial de Arquitectura de Barce­lona. Antes de finalizar sus estudios, Gaudí colabora con el arquitecto Josep Fontseré en el proyecto del Parque de la Ciudadela. En 1878 gana por concurso la realización de un proyecto de farolas para la Plaça Reial de Barcelona, existentes en la actualidad. Entre 1883 y 1926, Gaudí deja a esta ciudad una muestra de obras de muy distinta índole. ›› Was born in Reus in 1852. He studied architecture in Barcelona Provincial School of Architecture. Before finishing his studies he collaborated with Josep Fontseré, architect, in the Citadella Park project. In 1878 he won a contest to carry out a street lights project for Barcelona´s Plaza Real. Those street ligths still exist. Between 1883 and 1926 Gaudí left in Barcelona a sample of ten different and varied works.

En el interior del parque se encuentra la Casa-Museo , donde vivió Gaudí antes de trasladarse a la Sagrada Familia. Cabe destacar el banco ondulado del “trencadís” en el que hizo sentar a un obrero para tomar las medidas y proyectarlo. ›› This is Gaudi´s largest work in Barcelona. It is an area which main aim was to become a british style “garden-city”. Inside the Park, we can find the House-Museum where Gaudí lived beforemoving to the "Sagrada Familia" (The Holy Family). La montaña y el monasterio benedictino de Montserrat, el cual se fundó en el siglo XI, están situados en un parque natural a unos 50 km al oeste de Barcelona.

En el santuario se venera a Santa María de Montserrat, patrona de Catalunya. La comunidad benedictina, actualmente integrada por unos ochenta monjes, está al servicio del santuario desde hace casi mil años. Se dedica principalmente a la oración, el trabajo y la acogida de peregrinos, haciendo de este lugar un centro de encuentro, oración y cultura. Pan con tomate y jamón

Pa amb tomàquet "Pa amb Tomàquet" He aquí el plato más esencial y amado en Catalunya. Tan sencillo, como genial. El “pa amb tomàquet” se ha convertido en todo un símbolo de la identidad catalana. Parece fácil inventarlo, pero nada tiene que ver con otros maridajes. Os invitamos a descubrirlo en su auténtica esencia.

This is the best-loved traditional dish in Catalonia. It is as simple as delicious. “Pa amb tomàquet” has became a true symbol of Catalan identity.

It doesn’t seem like a difficult thing to come up with, but it is unlike any other culinary combination. We encourage you to discover it in its purest form.

Nada que ver con la pulpa de tomate machacada o triturada que utilizan en otros lugares para dar otro aspecto más risueño al pan, ni tampoco con las rodajas de tomate que engalanan algunas muestras de bocadillos fast food (para evitar, entre otras cosas, que se note su exiguo contenido proteico)… El “pa amb tomàquet” es algo muy peculiar, diferente… sello de la cultura gastronómica catalana. ¿Qué lo hace diferente? Más bien, ¿qué lo convierte en una

opción culinaria exquisita?

En primer lugar, las hogazas gruesas de pan artesano de pagès, como el que se hacía antaño, preferiblemente de la víspera o de dos o tres días antes. En segundo, un buen tomate con pulpa, mejor de verano, que es su temporada, y de proximidad. Tercero, un aceite de oliva virgen extra de las excelentes Denominaciones de Origen de Catalunya (ver recuadro); cuarto, una sal en escamas, por ejemplo, la

deliciosa de Fornells (Menorca).

Y finalmente, por quinto lugar, la forma de proceder. Para realizar un “pa amb tomàquet” en su sentido más purista deberemos tostar el pan ligeramente. Lo ideal sobre fuego de leña, a falta de ello con la tostadora. Partimos el tomate por la mitad y frotamos su pulpa por ambas caras de las rebanadas. Finalizamos con un hilo de aceite, también en ambas caras, y pizcamos la sal con los dedos sobre ellas. ¡Buen provecho!

It bears no resemblance to the chopped or blended tomato used by in other places to lend a brighter appearance to bread, nor to the slices of tomato used by some fast food sandwich chains (to prevent people from noting its their meagre protein content, among other things...).

“Pa amb tomàquet” is unique, it’s distinctive... It is a seal of the Catalan culinary culture. But what makes it different? Or even, what makes it such a fantastic dish? First and foremost, the thick loaves of homemade pagès bread baked in the traditional style, preferably made yesterday or two or even three days ago. Secondly, a good tomato with pulp. The best ones are grown in the summer, which is when they are in season, which are locally-sourced. Third, extra virgin olive oil from the excellent Catalonia designation of origin (see table); Fourth, salt flakes, such as the delicious Fornells salt (Menorca). In fifth place, and to cap off the list, the correct procedure. To make “pa amb tomàquet” in its purest form, you should lightly toast the bread. It is best to do so over an open fire, but failing that, you can use a toaster. Split the bread down the middle and rub the pulp across both sides of the slices. Finish by drizzling oil on both sides and sprinkling salt over them with your fingers. Bon Profit!

Con qué acompañarlo What should I have with it?

Un clásico es el jamón, pero quizá en su versión más catalana lo es con anchoas de l'Escala. Ideal también para acompañar quesos curados… Y hasta dulces. Cuentan que el cantante catalán Lluís Llach lo va alternado con mordiscos de chocolate puro.

Ham is a classic option, but the most traditional Catalan way is anchovies with L’Escala olive oil.

Cured cheese and even sweet cheese are also ideal parings. It is said that Catalan singer Lluís Llach eats his alternating with bites of pure chocolate.
