Welcome to our 30th Annual Super Baldy Bull Sale! We continue to bring you the best of Simmental and SimAngus, because of what crossbreeding with these two breeds can accomplish. The best of both black and red!

Years ago a cowboy, Gary Jacobsen of Cheyenne, Wyoming said to me, “the Simmental x Angus crossbred cow is just better in every way than the Black Baldy. She’s a Super Baldy.” And that phrase has stuck with me and is the reason for calling our sale ….. the Super Baldy Sale. And now the SimAngus cow is “the standard of the industry”.

It’s Simple — Because you want more pounds, more muscle, more a productive crossbred cows and you want it in an acceptable calving ease package. And we can provide it! Now more than ever, Simmental and Angus, have the genetics to do that in combination. With the use of the advanced genetic evaluation, and the use of the A.I. industries best sires, we can provide bulls in quantity. We are proud of our offering!

1-Use Simmental to add muscle and yield, while still maintaining maternal traits. Use on English based cows, Angus and Black Baldy cows.

2-Use SimAngus/Super Baldy to add just a little Continental muscle to a crossbreeding program. Or use it to maintain a portion of hybrid vigor to an existing crossbreeding program of SimAngus cows. We’ve developed some of these SimAngus bulls with enough calving ease to use on heifers.

3-Use Black/Red Angus or calving ease SimAngus bulls for calving ease on heifers and to cross on Simmental cross cows.

PAP – Simmental work well at altitude. To indicate how well they work, several years ago, we decided to PAP test all our bulls. On January 23, 2022, Dr. Tim Holt of Colorado State University tested our bulls at the ranch at 5,315 feet elevation. Our attempt is to show you which bulls are better risks to take to the “high country” and perform well. Those scores are provided on each bull. Dr. Holt predicts spring yearling born bulls with scores of 42 or less and fall born bulls of 45 or less will work well at high altitude.

10... Some of these bulls may develop into a herdsire of which we may want to collect semen in the future. Therefore, we would like to maintain a “1/3 semen interest” in each bull in the sale. This could mean collecting semen in your “off season”, at our expense.

This will not interfere with ownership of the bull or salvage value. On the “right” bull, it could be valuable for both parties.

CSU, on January 22nd, 2022 at 5,435 feet elevation. PAP scores are provided to indicate differences between bulls and how they may work at higher elevations. The Future...

... Altenburg Super Baldy Ranch, Willie & Sharon Altenburg, reached an agreement with Triangle J Ranch, Darby & Annette Line of Miller, Nebraska in a long term agreement over the next three years in the sale of our 40 year established Simmental and SimAngus cowherd.

We did not want to see our cowherd dispersed one at a time in the future. We are pleased to reach an agreement with Triangle J Ranch, in selling our program in its entirety. They are already well established in the industry, and as they expand, the inclusion of our cow herd and bull sale protects our long-term bull customers.

We greatly value our forty plus year established commercial bull customers and will be working with them as we transition over the next few years.

Darby Line comments, “It is truly an honor and a privilege to purchase one of the premier Simmental herds ever offered in its entirety. Not only has Willie built an outstanding cow herd from the ground up, he has helped every Simmental breeder by being a mentor, and a promoter of our great breed. With Willie’s help, our number one goal is to continue the great service that the Altenburg’s have provided for so many years to their customers. This will be an exciting adventure for Triangle J and we can’t wait to meet everyone that have been so loyal to the Super Baldy Sale.”

Willie has agreed to develop the bulls in the same growing yards near Wellington/Fort Collins as he has in the past. Many will be out of the same ASR cows as they have always been. The bulls will be PAP tested by Dr. Tim Holt at 5400 feet, as they have been in the past. Next year, on the third Saturday of March, Triangle J will host the first sale in Fort Collins, Colorado.
