Westfield Community Association Newsletter No 154 November 2015

A time for gifts and messages, no doubt a list or two for Santa’s attention when technology plays a large part. When it comes to thanks what better way is there than the handwritten or spoken word for a present or deed? See page 11 for a wonderful example. However, my thanks on behalf of the Community Association is via the keyboard to those other volunteers who give of their time and effort to the production and distribution of this newsletter four times a year. Turning the pages you cannot fail but notice the large number of people who contact me thus giving you the chance to keep in touch with life in Westfield and the people who advertise. Not everyone is on Facebook and within these pages are often the answers to the questions asked there. I would appreciate more information to pass on to readers as I often hear that people do still read this from cover to cover presumably within the covers!! Also, I was told that there is so much to absorb in the winter issue that plans for next year’s WCA activities will wait for February. I hope you are not disappointed, there are certainly enough words to read. With all good wishes for the coming season and a healthy, happy 2016. Pauline Filsell-Page, Editor

IN REMEMBRANCE Kindly submitted to the WCA newsletter by Simon Knight with Ruth Carter WILLIAM BARROW

Private - GS/48445 – ‘B’ Company, 22nd (Kensington) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), 99th Brigade, 2nd Division. Born 1877 in Heathfield, Sussex the second son of Benjamin (farm labourer and cattleman on farm) and Lucy Barrow of Swife Road, Heathfield. The 1891 census finds William, then aged 14 years, living with his parents and five siblings at Jigs Hill, Kent Street, Westfield. He was then employed, like his father and elder brother Benjamin as a farm labourer. The 1901 census records that William, then aged 25, was single and living with his parents and two siblings at Jigs Hill and, like his elder brother Benjamin, employed as a dairy man driver. In 1903 he married Mary Ann (Annie). The 1911 census records that William, then aged 33 years, was living with his wife Mary Ann and their son William, then aged 7 years, at 41 Perth Road, Silverhill, St. Leonards. William was then employed by the Silverhill Dairy as a milk carrier. To help ends meet they had also taken in a lodger a self employed jobbing gardener named George Ward. The family appears to have later moved to 395 London Road, St. Leonards and his parents to Norton’s Farm, Westfield. In June 1916 conscription for married men was introduced and William was called up. However about this time or shortly after Mary Ann died leaving their son to be cared for by family. Following his initial training William embarked for France on 19th April 1917 where he joined his unit at the front. It is possible that he was one of a number of new recruits recently arrived from the UK and posted to the 22nd Battalion following heavy losses suffered by them earlier that year. The Battle of Cambrai opened on 20th November 1917 with great initial success for the British. However, by the time the 22nd Battalion entered the battle, on the evening of the 26th, the advance was grinding to a halt in front of the villages of Moeuvres and Bourlon and its neighbouring wood. The following evening the Kensingtons, minus ‘B’ Company, moved under heavy shell fire into Bourlon Wood to assist the men of the 62nd Division in an attempt to capture the remainder of the wood and the village to the west. However, the attack was abandoned due to the exhausted condition of the men of the 62nd Division and the strength of the Germans who themselves threatened to counter-attack and breakthrough. The Kensingtons remained in the wood, still under heavy shell fire, until their withdrawal to billets just behind the front line on the evening of the 28th. On 30th November the Germans counter-attacked with the objective of cutting off the salient formed by the British advance. Urgent requests for support near the village of Moeuvres west of Bourlon were soon received by the 2nd Division’s 5th and later 6th Brigades. The Kensingtons were placed temporarily under their command and again they moved forward to take up positions astride the Canal du Nord. Here over the following four days they held the front line. This line was not ideal and, in fact, one of the trenches was no more than a gap 300 yards long pointing straight toward the enemy with a block at its northern end. Exposed to attacks from three sides the Kensingtons repulsed numerous efforts by the Germans to dislodge them. Eventually on the night of 4th December the Battalion made an orderly withdrawal blowing dugouts containing surplus ammunition as they went. From 27th November to 4th December the 22nd Battalion lost: 7 officers wounded, 13 other ranks killed, 104 other ranks wounded and 1 man missing. William Barrow was one of those men, being reported as having been killed in action on 4th December, one of three men from the battalion who died that day. He was then aged 41 years. William has no known grave and is today commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Longueval, France. His name is also recorded upon the Hastings and St. Leonards war memorial in Alexandra Park. 5

Venue: The Plough Inn, The Moor Friday mornings from 10am to noon

he Hub has happened every Friday, except bank holidays, for another year. We don’t see all of the lovely people who used to a end or volunteer right at the beginning but 30 to 40 people join us most weeks. In September we raised £155 for Macmillan at this year’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. We’ve only had one ad‐hoc quiz in the last couple of months, which was iden fica on of road traffic signs. This was great fun but the results could be considered concerning – but Wes ield residents need not worry as we don’t come across many trams or reminders about the conges on charge locally! Monthly ‘Play Your Cards Right’ has won some nice prize money and is proving very popular. In the offing is a London style singalong on 20 November and, if we can organise it in me, maybe the long awaited evening trip to the dogs at Brighton on 26 November. The ever popular Christmas lunch will be provided by Mar n at the Plough on Thursday 17 December – the cost of which is subsidised for Hub regular a endees. Christmas carols will mark the season during the last Hub session for 2015 on the 18th. Hopefully all will be welcomed back on 8 January.

WESTFIELD BROWNIES AND GUIDES The Autumn term started in September as both units looked back on a busy summer term spent out on the school field or around the village which included an evening in the woods for the Brownies and a woods craft evening and an evening on the beach with fish and chips for the Guides. Members of both units went on a day trip to Olave 15 which was an International Camp for Guides at the Association’s camp site near East Grinstead where they were able to take part in a selection of activities. The following day five Westfield Brownies went to the same site for a three day camp which gave them the chance to try the activities which included, as it did for the day trippers, drumming and crate building; two of our girls managed to stand on their stack of 14 before it fell. The campers also met other Guides and Brownies and watched the show of dances and sketches put on by all the International Guides staying at the camp, for some it was first nights in a tent. In September the Brownies welcomed six new members and said a fond farewell to four girls who moved up to Guides and one trainee leader who has gone off to university. The Guides returned to find unexpectedly five members had left but we have now welcomed five new members so the unit stays the same size. The Brownies are at present spending as much of their meeting as possible outside working on an autumn badge while the Guides are looking into space and the night sky. Both units have places at their Tuesday night meetings so if interested please contact me. Sally Cruttenden 01424 754927

Members of Westfield WI have continued to have a busy time after the summer break. In September Trevor Weekes, the founder of East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance service, gave an excellent presentation about its work. The following week saw members enjoying an outing to Hever Castle. Brian Freeland brought George Bernard Shaw to life in October as he described him as a critic, a passionate socialist and playwright, using humorous and pithy quotes with wonderful effect. A dozen or so members attended the Rother Group meeting in Battle a few days later, when members from seven WIs enjoyed the visit of John Cave, a well-known Sussex folk singer. He entertained a large audience with songs and amusing anecdotes from the likes of Jake Thackray and Richard Stilgoe as well as performing some of his own songs. An afternoon of poking (fairly) gentle fun at establishment figures, including the WI! Our Annual Meeting is on 10 November with a competition ‘Something New from Something Old’. We host the Rother Group Carols at our own Parish Church on 1st December, and the December Christmas party meeting follows a week later, with a Christmas limerick as the competition. Posters in the village will give details of the 2016 meetings on 12 January and 9 February. Westfield WI meets in the Parish Hall on the second Tuesday of the month at 2.15 pm, and new members are very welcome. The WI offers book club and craft afternoons and opportunities to attend County workshops and events. Ring Julie Lloyd (President) on 01424 754013 if you would like more information. The ladies of Westfield W.I. are able to provide teas for up to 50 people in the Parish Hall, subject to availability, at £5.00 per head. Please contact

The 23rd World Scout Jamboree at Kirara‐Hama, Japan

(Proprietors: Rama & Pragna Patel)

Thank you to all those who supported me in any way Main Road, Westfield to enable me to a end the 23rd World Scout 01424 751385 Jamboree at Kirara‐Hama, Japan in July and August 2015. Without the sponsorship of family, friends and Open Mon - Sat 8.00am - 8.00pm neighbours, local chari es and local businesses I (and Sunday 9.30am - 6.00pm the four other scouts from Has ngs and Rye) would not have been able to experience this once in a *Off Licence * Promotions* life me opportunity. Par cular thanks to the Lions In store Bakery, Bake ‘n Bite Club of Has ngs; Mrs A Lacy‐Tate Trust; Rotary Club of St Leonards on Sea; Lions Club of Rye and District; Hot Pies & Pasties, Cakes, Milk Has ngs & St Leonards Muffin Club; The Roy Hudson Fruit & Vegetables ~ local grown Trust and Stamco Building Supplies. Frozen Foods inc Korkers For me it was almost two years in the planning, for Newspapers & Magazines the leaders it was much longer. From the first Confectioneries selec on weekend back in November 2013, through many training weekend camps and fundraising ac vi es including car washing and bag packing. Going to Kirara‐Hama allowed me to experience new cultures; make lifelong friends and so much more. I was one of five scouts represen ng Has ngs and Rye LINK cash machine District and one of 36 scouts represen ng East Sussex. In total more than 3,000 scouts travelled from the UK, including those going as members of the Interna onal Service Team. We started by travelling to Osaka from Gatwick via Istanbul. Staying with a host family was amazing. Neither I nor my fellow scout from East Sussex who was staying with me spoke a word of Japanese, and none of the host family spoke any English. However, be it through mime, poin ng, or a li le Google translate we managed to make ourselves understood. The total culture shock we received through the complete immersion in Japanese culture was startling at first, but surely the best way to start our trip. On to Kirara‐Hama. Free from the comfort of air condi oning whilst staying at the Jamboree site itself, we truly knew what it is like to be hot. I can certainly say I will never complain about the weather in England again. I had so many new and exci ng experiences, including visi ng Hiroshima; experiencing the violent forces of an earthquake in an earthquake simulator; having a day out on a Japanese troop carrying vessel; and visi ng an elementary school – where the number of visi ng scouts outnumbered the pupils 3 to 1. At the end of the Jamboree we then travelled to Tokyo by bullet‐train for our last few days in Japan. Tokyo was an amazing experience. A very friendly city to tourists (or Bri sh ones at that) with English signs on all of the Tube sta ons. Our leaders allowed us an experience like no other, allowing us to roam the city at will in groups of 3 or more – much to the displeasure of the Con ngent Management Team. Be it for be er or worse, I returned from Japan a much more independent and (hopefully) grown up young adult. I would like to use this opportunity to extend my thanks once again to my parents for allowing me to go in the first place; to our leaders who had to put up with me, and to everybody else who helped me in my fundraising efforts as I could not have gone without you. Thank you very much for all you have done, Alexander Wilde September 2015

The Royal British Legion ~ Poppy Appeal 2015 Remembrance de As this issue of the WCA newsle er goes to press many (perhaps most) Wes ield residents will be wearing poppies in memory of all those members of the armed forces too many who suffered injury or loss, or who gave their lives serving their country. We wear the poppy not to glorify war but simply to acknowledge their sacrifice with pride and sadness. Once again this year the shops, pubs, restaurants and other businesses of Wes ield have supported the Royal Bri sh Legion by ac ng as collec ng points, and once again fi een volunteers have carried out the tradi onal house to house collec ons. We are grateful for their me and effort in this cause. It frequently happens that a household has already contributed elsewhere to the Poppy Day collec on, but here in Wes ield the response is almost always generous and posi ve to the collector. The nearby branch of the Royal Bri sh Legion at Sedlescombe welcomes new members, and can be contacted via their President Ernie Burgess 01424 870219 Mee ngs are held at the Queens Head, Sedlescombe on the third Wednesday each month (except August), from 10.30 am to 12 noon. Home Visits If you are not able to attend the surgery, or are caring for someone not able to attend, and feel a doctor visit is required, please call the surgery as early as possible in the morning. You may then receive a telephone call from a doctor to clarify if a visit is required and the necessary arrangements will be made. Please do not ask a doctor to call unless you are too unwell or disabled to leave your home. A GP can see four or five people in the surgery in the time taken to make one home visit, making it a very poor use of a doctor's time if a visit is not necessary, and we would therefore request that you come to the surgery if physically possible.

Westfield Parish Church From the Vicarage…….Christmas Around the World In preparation for our Christmas tree festival this year, I was doing some research into countries of the world and their Christmas customs and came across many different ways in which people celebrate at this time of year. We all know that Christmas trees are very important in Germany, in fact that is where our custom is said to have come from, but also Germany is well known for its Christmas Markets where all sorts of Christmas foods and decorations can be found. By contrast, in Australia it is the custom to decorate houses with bunches of 'Christmas Bush', “Ceratopetalum gummiferum”, a native Australian tree with small green leaves with red and cream coloured flowers. Neighbourhoods in Australia also have competitions with Light displays to raise money for charities (Westfield would beat them easily!) Scandinavia also has many different customs and, in Sweden, one of the biggest celebrations is St. Lucia's Day (or St. Lucy's Day) on 13 December. The celebration comes from stories that were told by Monks who first brought Christianity to Sweden. It is said that St Lucia would secretly bring food to Christians in Rome, who lived in hiding in the catacombs under the city. Lucy means 'light' and the story is that she would wear candles on her head so she had both her hands free to carry things. A custom that is still carried out today but not to be recommended! In many countries it is traditional to give presents on Christmas Eve rather than on Christmas Day, and in Denmark most people go to a Church Service on Christmas Eve to hear the Christmas Story. It's also traditional to give animals a treat on Christmas Eve, so some people go for a walk in the park or woods and take some food to give to the animals and birds. In Ghana December is the beginning of the chocolate harvest and the celebrations are full of colour, dance and drumming. Come to our Christingle service to find out more about Christmas and chocolate! There’s a great website www.whychristmas.com with lots more information and how Christmas is celebrated as a joyful happy time wherever you are in the world. Wherever you are, and however it is celebrated, we remember that Christmas is a celebration of a birthday. The birth of Christ, who came to earth two thousand years ago bringing new hope to everyone. In one of the Christmas readings Luke tell us that the Angel said to the shepherds “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord”. And then they sung – “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, goodwill among all people.” Christmas is a time of celebration and enjoyment, a time for families and friends to come together, and a time to give thanks for the wonderful gift of Jesus born among us. Every blessing for Christmas and the New Year Robert, Susan and Ciaran.

Winter Visitors We have been confidently informed that this winter may be " A Freezer" A great time to put on your warm winter woollies, maybe tuck a little flask of brandy in your pocket and take your binoculars out to see some of the beautiful winter visitors we have here in East Sussex. Large mixed flocks of Redwings and Fieldfares can often be seen in apple orchards, they also love the red berries on Holly and Yew trees. Finch numbers increase with the high influx of Brambling, Greenfinches and Chaffinches, mainly migrating in from Scandinavia. If you are really lucky you may see the stunning Waxwing, a beautiful bird that also loves berries. In the past few years more Warblers are spending the winter here with us instead of flying off to warmer climes, the Blackcap is a prime example, the numbers of these pretty little birds which spend the winter in the UK has grown and grown. All of these birds may well pop into your gardens if natural food becomes scarce so keep your eyes peeled. Hastings Sierra Leone Friendship Link For cryptic crossword addicts remember to collect your 2015’s Orange Quiz Sheet Every year HSLFL raises several hundreds of £££ with their famous (or infamous) Orange Quiz Sheet. This year the theme is Education – people, places, subjects, activities…from preschool to university. If you like brainteasers and cryptic crosswords, you’ll love this. Anagrams, hidden clues, Spoonerisms, sneaky definitions: it’ll keep you puzzling it all out, for ages. Just the thing for the family to put its collective heads together over at Christmas. The sheets (only £1) are available from Westfield News, Hastings Tourist Information Office or from Westfield resident, Nola 01424 751295. To see what the Link does in Hastings Sierra Leone, just Google it – for the website, www.hastingshastings.org.uk; this gives a good idea of the urgent need and the kinds of tasks undertaken. Fortunately, Sierra Leone is very close to being declared ebola free – but even then, there’ll be a huge amount of regeneration work to be done, especially in the areas of health and education.

any dog owners will be nodding in agreement with me. Emmie, my rescue husky x Labrador, certainly did make my life whole. Now, after many times walking the footpaths of Westfield on a Sunday afternoon, she is walking the footpaths at Rainbow Bridge after being with us for over thirteen and a half years. An unusual crossbreed, and very pretty as well, meant she won many rosettes at dog shows, mainly red ones for first place. I think Emmie could lay claim to Westfield’s Fun Dog Show coming about, as a chance remark that I would have to move her trophies on the mantelpiece to fit in the one I had won in the horticultural society Autumn show in 2003 was overheard and the rest as they say is history. Through attending these shows I have made friends who I see again as I still take young 5 year old Frankie and Megan, now nearly 14, to compete for a prettiest bitch title, waggiest tail or best veteran. The end is hard as those of you who have been there will agree. You just have to remember that if you do have to make the decision as I did back in July it is the kindest thing you can do for your pet and to think of all the good times, the fun times. Taking on a dog is big commitment and is for life. Their love is unconditional, giving you so much in return, sometimes for so little. Always there for you, a comfort when you are sad and always wanting to please. L.S. Ed: Cat owners may also be nodding. 21

Richard’s Ramblings ~ NEW RECRUITS. (2) As the weeks progressed (it was a ten week course) other subjects were cunningly inserted into the metable. Radio Procedure, Civil Defence and then the dreaded prac cal exercises. These gave the staff the opportunity to try their hands at ac ng. An elderly saloon car would be driven into a lamp post. An instructor, suitably intoxicated, would be found by a trainee constable si ng in the driving seat. The drunk was incoherent. Another ac ng drunk instructor would constantly try to distract the constable while he was a emp ng to breath test the drink driver. Other Instructors played members of the public who also harangued the officer. It became quite tense. The trainee constable, close to despair, eventually arrested the drink driver only to find that the real driver had already been taken to hospital and the drunk driver merely a tramp who was passing by and wanted to sit down. Such exercises were impossible to resolve because the instructors designed them to be full of ambigui es. They did prepare us to be ready for the unexpected though. Another li le exercise was the three minute lecture. Intended to accustom the student officer to think on his feet, the subjects were many and varied. One poor soul had to give a full three minutes on the inside of a ping pong ball. When my turn came my subject was “Ba ery Hens”. I couldn’t believe my luck. I started off thus: “ Ba ery hens are a subject I know very li le about. It’s true that, where I come from, hens are common. We don’t have ba ery ones however, we plug ours into the 13 amp socket.” I intended to con nue in a humorous vein but didn’t have to. The whole class, including the instructors, were convulsed with laughter for the rest of my allo ed me. A good result, that. A er five weeks, the senior course held their passing out parade.* We were allowed to a end their final dinner. Sgt Alf Webb was accompanied by a very a rac ve lady but due to Alf’s reputa on as a hard man, not one of the eligible single men spoke to the girl. Subjects became more complex. There was court procedure, which was recorded on video. Processing prisoners and a five mile cross country run. Add to this legal subjects such as robbery, burglary, the , unlawful imprisonment, decep on, going equipped and sudden and unexplained death. Everything now seemed more serious. Each Friday a ernoon there was the weekly test. It was verbal; the class instructors asking ques ons of individuals in front of everyone else. Ge ng the answer wrong caused delays in going home so everyone was on the ball. The staff decided that the students should stage a talent show for their entertainment. Peter, the ex Army RSM did the most amazing mind reading demonstra on that I have ever witnessed. Rather conveniently I cannot recall my part in this produc on. The final week comprised the final test and the passing out parade. One or two recruits failed the 100 ques on test and had to do the second five weeks of the course again. (No, I wasn’t one of them). Sgt Pond had us drilling on the parade ground two or three mes a day to perfect the rou ne. Alf Webb organised a gym display and our plimsolls and gym kit had to be prepared to a gli ering standard, likewise the uniform. We were permi ed to bring guests to the final day. Being close to Christmas our guests would be treated to mince pies and other seasonal fare. Come the final day, the morning was spent preparing our kit, Peter the ex RSM giving hints as to ge ng the best shine on our boots and the best creases in our trousers. The first item on the agenda was the gym display. This went well and was applauded by all the guests. A quick change and then the parade itself. A short explana on is now in order. For ten weeks we had drilled to the same tune, being “Old Comrades” wri en I believe by Carl Tieke. A jaunty li le tune, quite easy to keep a squad in step. The final parade however, marched off to something different. Some unspeakable instructor had hidden Old Comrades. The parade went well in spite of this and Sgt Pond was delighted. Cheers, Merry Christmas

Richard’s Ramblings con nued from page 22 Then came the final presenta ons and refreshments for all. Sgt Webb was again accompanied by the beau ful lady. Speeches were made and a representa ve of each class thanked the instructors. Alf Webb was thanked, along with special thanks for bringing his lovely wife. Alf responded. It was not his wife, but his daughter. Poor girl. Single and una ached, surrounded by many eligible men, none of whom paid the slightest a en on to her. We were all frightened of her dad! Best wishes, Richard, former Wes ield PCSO.

*There were always two courses running; such was the demand for recruits at that me that intakes were every five weeks. 23

WESTFIELD SCHOOL Headteacher: Matt Jarvis office@westfield.e-sussex.sch.uk http://westfield.e-sussex.sch.uk

S

chool reopened on 3rd September for the Autumn term when we welcomed our new head teacher, Matt Jarvis, and deputy head, Laylee Pocock, into our family along with 30 new reception class children over the first couple of weeks. As usual, this academic year started with a bang as we explore some exciting topics from WWII, Jurassic Park, 1066 Battle of Hastings, to Ripples and The Seaside. Some of our classes have been out already on trips to enthuse them to Newhaven Fort, the Blue Reef Aquarium, Battle Abbey and, new for this year, The Natural History Museum. Year 1 were delighted with visitors from the Ambulance Service and a local farmer, complete with ambulance and tractor, to support their ‘You and Me’ topic. Once again, our Year 4 class were asked to contribute artwork for Hastings Week (October 10-18); they worked hard to produce pictures on ‘The Pier’ which were judged into third place out of entries from eleven local schools. The winners of the £100 cash prize donated by Tesco: Churchwood. We hope many of you had the chance to visit the exhibition and see all our children’s work on display at Tesco Hollington. We are pleased to give a home to a Rag Bag Bin, organised and serviced by our PTA committee, which lives just inside the school entrance gates in Workhouse Lane. If you are having a clear out, please drop in any unwanted clothes, shoes or textiles (bagged up) into the bin where once a term, all contents are collected, weighed and distributed to charities for further use; a percentage of the weight is returned in cash for the PTA to plough back into new fundraising events and resources for our school. As term 2 now unfolds, our PTA is already busy making plans and preparations for the school Christmas Fayre on Friday 4 December. Please come along and join in the fun of our traditional fayre from 3.15pm in the Community Hall and within the school grounds. Also in planning mode for the festive season, our Reception and KS1 classes are working hard on their Nativity tableau and plays, due to be performed to many proud parents/carers on 3, 8 and 9 December followed by our annual carol concerts from Years 5 & 6, performed around the village including the Grand Switch On of Westfield Lights (3 December) and an evening at Westfield Church on Tuesday 15 December at 6pm. School breaks for the Christmas holidays on Friday 18 December and returns for a brand new year on Wednesday 6 January 2016.

WESTFIELD HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY It has been an active summer for the WHS with a coach trip to Wisley and self drive trips to the Lavender Farm, Hadlow and Friary Gardeners, Hastings. All the trips were well attended and by amazing good luck held on sunny days. Everyone enjoyed themselves, learnt new things and bought themselves some unusual new plants. On 12 September the Autumn Show was one of our biggest ever Shows with lots of entries and plenty of competition. There were a number of new entrants and thanks to some recent floral art lessons from Chris Lynch we had quite a few novice entries. Anyone thinking of entering for the first time next year, don’t be shy...new entrants are always very welcome. For his superb vegetables, the Banksian Medal was won by Bernard Hillier. To see a list of all winners please page 28 or look at our website. We were lucky to have a dahlia expert at the Show, who not only displayed his high quality flowers but generously donated about 30 blooms. These were auctioned off at the end of the Show causing much hilarity and raising money for the WHS. You will recall at the Westfield Summer Fete we joined with Friary Gardeners, who provided a superb plant stall, and the WHS gave out nearly 100 pumpkin seedlings free of charge to anyone wishing to grow one for our Giant Pumpkin Competition at the end of October. This was a great success, with pumpkins ranging from 0.7kgs to a whopping 28kgs prizes were awarded to the BIG the BAD and the UGLY! The AGM in October saw some significant changes and we are happy to welcome several new committee members. Chairman is Patricia Marston, Vice Chair Catherine Collingwood, Treasurer James Easthope and Membership Secretary Tricia Oakland. On Wednesday 2 December we are holding a Christmas Floral Decoration evening, see below. For more information about this or any aspect of the WHS please contact me. T

he Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance attends incidents that could happen to anyone, anywhere, during their everyday life. The teams are tasked on average 4-6 times every day reaching the people who really need them, anywhere in our counties, within 20 minutes. In 2013, the charity became the first air ambulance in the country to provide a life-saving service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As a registered charity, relying almost entirely on donations to raise the £6.5 million each year required to fund the service. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, the air ambulance has attended over 25,000 incidents and continues to be available to every person living, working and travelling in our counties, should they ever need it. Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance has been to Westfield twice this year. In February the Mardenbased helicopter took 15 minutes to get to Westfield, land in a field next to the road so the charity helicopter’s doctor and paramedic could treat two casualties from a road traffic collision. Neither was airlifted, one was taken by South East Coast Ambulance (SECAmb) to King’s College Hospital in London; the transfer time was 85 minutes. The other went by land ambulance to A&E at the Conquest Hospital on The Ridge, Hastings. Police and a Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) were also in attendance. The second occasion was in late summer for an incident in Chapel Lane; here again no-one was airlifted - the little person involved was taken to the Conquest for observation but home again the same day. As this newsletter goes to print, the exciting news is a new replacement aircraft is now due early in 2016 capable of providing an enhanced service. Currently all interventions are executed in the open but the size of the new cabin will enable the teams to work inside. Also, it will be able to cover the whole region and return to base without refuelling. Other news is that a new site at Paddock Wood airfield is on the drawing board. In their 25th anniversary year, many people have bought tickets for KSSAT ‘Win a MINI’ Draw; the winner will be drawn on Tuesday 15 December. If you wish to donate throughout the year, there are green collection boxes in Westfield at the Plough, New Inn, Westfield News and the Surgery; cash in these boxes has amounted to £122 in the past year. Other contributions are via direct donations, bequests and fund-raising events, raffles and their lottery. 01622 833803 Registered Charity No. 1021367 kssairambulance.org.uk info@kssairambulance.org.uk Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Trust Wheelbarrow Park Estate, Pattenden Lane, Marden, Kent TN12 9QJ 34

We currently have about 40 young people in the Group and this term we have the new Leaders planning exciting programmes for them. All sections have taken advantage of the good weather and arranged activities outside whilst we have the light evenings. We would still like to find another Cub Leader so if anyone would be interested please contact Frances on 754548. We have vacancies in the Beaver Colony so if your son or daughter is aged between 6 and 8 years looking for fun and friends why not give us a try? Contact Katharine Moore 07736146779. Our summer camp for Cubs and Scouts was held at the end of August this year and we set off in pouring rain to Downe, Kent. Fortunately the rain let up enough for us to get the mess tents up and everything inside in time to have lunch. The following three days were dry and we made good use of the activities on site trying climbing, archery, gokarts, zip-wire, tunnels and the aerial trek. We also had a half day out to Downe House, the home of Charles Darwin. Everyone had a great time. On the fundraising side we are holding another popular Jumble Sale, please see box above. We are hoping to arrange, by popular request, another Murder Mystery evening early in the New Year so watch this space! Westfield Pool @ The Plough The summer pool team from the Plough changed leagues in the summer. The team had won the Country league the year before and also the Country league cup. The league wasn't a particularly strong one though and we felt a new challenge was required. There had never been a Rye Summer pool league to follow on from the well-established Rye Winter league in which we have played for around twenty years. Many of the players from all of the teams that form the Rye Winter league had often requested that the game be continued to fill the summer void. However, the committee had always declined their request, citing that they themselves required a break (excuse pun) from managing a new second league. If it was to happen, someone new would have to take on the challenge. Two of our players did just that. Ron Allen and James Sharples got together twelve pub teams from the Rye district and formed a new Summer league. A website and Facebook page was soon up and running and the competition was very popular. There were two divisions and The Plough won their division and The Robin Hood won theirs. There was a final playoff between the two, held at Pub 31 in Winchelsea to find the overall winner. Alas, our old adversaries had the beating of us on the night. One of our players, George Worley, won a £50 prize for winning more consecutive matches than any other player in the two leagues combined with a run of eleven unbeaten. That is quite an achievement and George kindly donated his £50 award to The Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital. Currently the Winter league has resumed and it is now stronger than ever. There has been a recruitment of several outside players of an extremely high standard into two of the teams which is a pity as it compromises the spirit of the league. We have always fielded teams from those that use the Plough or are residents of Westfield. We shall endeavour to do our best however and fly the flag for the Plough regardless. There will be a pool team Christmas quiz around mid December, date to be confirmed. Everyone interested in fielding a team should look out for further details nearer the time. All local businesses will kindly be displaying our flyer. 38

It was perfect weather for our Autumn American Open Tournament in September. Sixteen players were drawn partners and battled on to play four games with, and four games against their partner, thereby collecting their own score. The final set was played with Cliff Schubert partnering Mary Potterton against Denis Parnham and Margaret Atkins, who lost to the finalist 6-0. The finalists stayed on to enjoy a Ploughman's lunch shared with members and visitors of the club. For further details please contact 01424 752531 Mary Potterton

As I write this newsletter we have all enjoyed more than a week of glorious weather. Unfortunately for us the weather at the end of the Bowls season wasn’t so good. Our annual Bank Holiday Tournament had to be cancelled, despite the efforts of our greenkeeper, due to a flooded green, which resulted in us losing a lot of money. The playing season on a whole has been most successful and enjoyable. We have played over fifty games against other clubs including friendlies and the Rother League where we finished 6th. One of our last bowling fixtures was our club’s competition day. This was held in damp and drizzly conditions but was well supported and some competitive bowls played. With the building and completion of our new pavilion it has enabled us to increase and have a wider range of social/fund-raising events. We held an “Elvis” night with an Elvis impersonator and a surprise birthday party was held for a club member. In the following weeks we have two quizzes and a new venture for us, a Christmas Carol Night combined with games and Santa or one of his helpers. David Thomas Chairman 01424 754748

Westfield Football Club Following relegation, the first team are in 10th place in Division 2 of the Southern Combination Football League. This season is the first year for over 20 years that the first team have not been able to compete in senior football. Following over 20 years success in senior Football the club has been relegated not through ability but the facilities at the Parish Field not meeting required standards for senior football. For many many years the club has been hoping that the Downs Project would come to fruition but unfortunately despite an expensive appeal to the Football Association at Wembley the club was relegated. This is very disappointing to all at WFC as with no Downs Project started let alone completed, the whole thing was out of the hands of Westfield FC. Following a poor start the reserves now have a new manager and things look far more positive. Having been promoted from the East Sussex League Division 4 to Division 3 this year the 3rd team have got off to a flyer and currently sit in top spot in Division 3. The recent Bank Holiday weekend saw Westfield Youth, run in conjunction with Pass+Move Football coaching, take 30 children, making up a side of u7s, u8s and u9s, across to Dordrecht, Holland to take part in a four team competition. It was part of a ‘Twin Towns’ initiative and hopefully will be the beginnings of a new relationship between Westfield Football Club, and in particular SV Oranje Wit, who hosted the tournament. Whilst the football was successful for Westfield FC, seeing each age group come away victorious, the real prize was in the new friends made and the incredible experience had by all children, parents and coaches alike. The chance to play abroad and experience the culture and approach to the game by the teams in Dordrecht will be priceless. It was also an eye opening one for WFC coaches as they witnessed firsthand how the game is run in Holland, the family approach that is generated and encouraged at clubs, coupled with the scale, quality and amount of facilities available and easily accessible to all children who want to play the game. It left us all with a lot of food for thought. The trophies the children received at a presentation on Sunday evening, which were supplied by our amazing host from SV Oranje Wit, Erik Van Vugt, all read “Every new friend is an adventure - the start of new memories.” A gesture and sentiment that nicely encapsulates the entire trip. Our thanks go to Erik Van Vugt and everyone at SV Oranje Wit. To Robin Gray at the Twin Town Association and to the most incredible group of young talented footballers who are a joy to work with and a credit to themselves and their families. Plans for a return trip next year are already under way and we are hoping to see Erik and SV Oranje Wit bring two sides across in late spring to take part in one of the local tournaments. The memorabilia of the Holland footballing experience is now on display in the WFC clubroom.

Window on Westfield The Westfield Parish Council Newsletter Compiled by the clerk to the Council. A brief summary of Council business conducted at their August, September and October meetings. Full minutes are available on the website www.westfieldvillage.co.uk or from the clerk. August Mick Kempster attended the August meeting to introduce himself as the newly elected Chairman of Westfield Football Club. The members ratified the selection of a new clerk to take over from Barbara Balkham from 1st September and it was explained that Barbara would actually remain in post for the month to ensure a smooth handover. As both the District and County Councillors were present useful discussions were held as to the quality of the various wheelie bins, the waste collection contracts, police enforcement issues and the fact that further noticeable savings are to be made at County level. The condition of Wheel Lane road surface was also discussed. September A public meeting had been organised by our PCSO to discuss an element of anti social behaviour that is currently being experienced. It was reported that limited funds might be made available by the police and Orbit Housing if any suitable projects could be identified and approved. Talks are ongoing on this issue. Councillors reported that some exciting new equipment had been identified to replace that which was destroyed on the recreation ground that would hopefully not be as easily destroyed. However, due to the extended lead times being quoted for any new equipment it was decided to order any replacement selected in time for an early spring installation. October Contractors have removed the burned equipment from the recreation ground and have laid turf to ensure the area is in as good a condition as is possible over the winter. A new dog waste bin has been installed at the footpath between Cottage Lane and the A28 to replace the one totally destroyed by fire during September. A site meeting had been held with ESCC representatives to further consider possible plans for the long awaited footpath at the A28 end of Cottage Lane. Match funding has been applied for to help with the cost of this work but unfortunately, by the time the detailed surveys, ownership, safety and feasibility studies are prepared and approved it is possible that this work may not be started within this financial year. It was reported that two new fingerpost signs have now been installed – one at the (p.t.o. 43

Continued from previous page)

Moor Lane, Workhouse Lane junction and the other at the Bluemans Lane, Sprays Lane and Moat Lane junction. A third post is awaiting replacement. It was reported that Highways had been contacted again regarding flooding on Main Road at the Moor Lane junction and the clerk was asked to follow up reminders sent to ESCC in July about damaged or missing speed signs at several parish locations.

Westfield Wheelies.....

...... needs a lift

A few years ago we had a thriving scheme here in Westfield where volunteers took people in the village to nearby medical appointments in their cars. The scheme was popular; of invaluable help to those receiving lifts and rewarding to those who kindly gave their time. Through it new friendships were often formed. Many people have expressed a wish that this scheme could be revived. To do so it would need a couple of volunteers to co-ordinate it involving a few daytime hours a month and good communication skills. If you would like to have a chat about this please contact Catherine – 01424 552485
