SupportedtheMiamiHeartStudy'sgoalofadvancingpreventive cardiologybybetterdefiningfactorsthatleadtocardiovascular arterydiseaseinadultswhohavenosymptomsorobviousrisk factors-Morethan2,500asymptomaticvolunteersfromSouth Florida,aged40-65,haveenrolledintheMiamiHeartStudy(also knownasMiHeart)–positioningtheInstituteasaleaderonthis topicnationwide.Thestudyhasalreadyfoundsubstantial prevalenceofcoronaryplaqueinasymptomaticindividuals. Specifically,49%ofparticipantshadcoronaryplaque,and6%had stenosis(narrowingofarteries)ofgreaterthan50%,themost seriousriskfactorforheartattackorstrokeifuntreated.
