LANI KAHN DRODY

BOARD CHAIR

BAPTIST HEALTH FOUNDATION

Message from Leadership

As we reflect on the accomplishments of the past year, we are filled with immense pride and gratitude for the incredible progress we’ve made together. Baptist Health continues to flourish because of the dedication, passion and unwavering generosity of our donors, who share our commitment to advancing healthcare and improving lives.

This past year has been marked by remarkable achievements. Community leaders, healthcare professionals, donors and corporate philanthropy partners gathered at our Grand Gala to support Baptist Health and our community rallied together for Bounce Back from CancerTM to help build a world without cancer (pgs. 13 & 14).

We welcomed two new endowed chairs (pg. 40) and broke ground on the Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center — the first of its kind in the region, catering to the specific needs of women in our community (pg. 34). A $50 million investment in Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute from Kenneth C. Griffin — the largest single donation made to Baptist Health in our nearly 65year history — will propel us into a new era of clinical and research excellence and redefine the landscape of neurological care. Raising $151.6 million and disbursing $25.5 million to support the needs of our hospitals and institutes demonstrates our commitment to “power extraordinary” care, research and more for Baptist Health (pg. 16).

On September 20, 2024, Baptist Health announced Power Extraordinary — The Campaign for Baptist Health, a $600 million fundraising campaign to support Baptist Health’s vision of providing world-class, compassionate health services by pursuing a reimagined approach to patient care, a new era in research and clinical trials, a hub for the best minds in medicine and a globally recognized center for innovation (pg. 18).

Through this historic campaign, Baptist Health Foundation has set an important tone for how invaluable donor support is to the advancements we strive to make. Your generosity is not only a cornerstone of our mission, but a catalyst for our future. Every contribution brings us closer to the breakthrough innovations that are changing the landscape of healthcare.

Philanthropy makes it possible to expand our reach, bring hope to those in need and create a healthier future for all. It allows us to invest in cutting-edge research, support critical initiatives and provide compassionate care to those we serve.

Together, we are making a profound difference. On behalf of Baptist Health Foundation, we extend our deepest thanks for your partnership, for being an integral part of our journey and for driving positive change.

A very special thank you to our outgoing board chair, Lani Kahn Drody, for her dedicated leadership and service to Baptist Health Foundation. Her guidance, commitment and support have greatly contributed to our mission and the impact we are making. We deeply appreciate her hard work, passion and vision.

We are excited to welcome Michael Katz as our new chair. Get to know more about him and his vision for Baptist Health Foundation on pg. 32.

Inspired to Give

Meet Sandra Torres, R.N., a resource nurse from Baptist Health West Kendall Baptist Hospital, who had the opportunity to attend the 2024 Academy of MedicalSurgical Nurses conference in Toronto, Canada, thanks to the generosity of Baptist Health Foundation donors. Through this support, Sandra not only had the honor of presenting her research, but also connected with healthcare professionals from around the world, gaining valuable insights and knowledge she was eager to bring back to her team at West Kendall Baptist Hospital.

Sandra is grateful for her experience, stating, “I am deeply appreciative of Baptist Health Foundation’s commitment to supporting nurses like me. The chance to attend such a prestigious conference would not have been possible without this generous funding. It has been a significant milestone in my career, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn,

share my work and connect with others in the field.”

Inspired by the impact of philanthropy, Sandra transformed her gratitude into action by donating to Baptist Health’s Employee Giving Campaign and becoming a champion for the cause. As a champion, she encourages her peers to recognize the importance of giving back through philanthropy and joins a group of employee champions across Baptist Health who believe that generosity begins at home.

“I choose to support Baptist Health Foundation through the Employee Giving Campaign because I believe in the vital work they do. The Foundation plays a crucial role in enhancing healthcare services, providing resources and improving patient outcomes. It’s inspiring to witness the positive impact they have on the community, and I’m proud to be a part of that.

What motivates me to give back is the profound appreciation I have for our staff, patients and community. As a healthcare professional, I see firsthand the challenges and triumphs individuals face. By giving back, I aim to contribute to their well-being, whether it’s by supporting fellow staff members, improving patient experiences or making a positive difference in the wider community,” says Sandra.

Construction Companies Give Back in Support of Baptist Health

Several construction companies in South Florida are dedicated to more than just building homes and businesses — they are laying the foundation for something even greater: high-quality, compassionate healthcare close to home.

Recognizing the importance of a strong healthcare system in the community they help build, several construction industry leaders have given back to Baptist Health through philanthropy. Companies such as NV2A Group, Moss Construction and Bermello Ajamil & Partners, among others, have made an impact by

supporting Baptist Health and becoming part of the Corporate Philanthropy Partners program — demonstrating a shared vision to build a vibrant and healthy community. Their collaboration with Baptist Health Foundation shows how construction companies are not simply builders of structures, they’re builders of hope, health and community.

For NV2A Group Chief Financial Officer Agustin Arellano Jr., supporting Baptist Health reflects a strong sense of community. He states, “As a construction management firm, NV2A

takes great pride in the projects we build and the clients who choose us to build for them. As a local South Florida firm, we take even greater pride in supporting organizations that make our community better. Our relationship with Baptist Health is one that we hold dear on many levels.”

Through their generosity, our Corporate Philanthropy Partners are ensuring that as South Florida grows, Baptist Health grows alongside it, helping provide access to lifesaving care and building a brighter, healthier future for all.

Generosity at Work Bounce Back from Cancer™

Funds raised through Bounce Back from Cancer™, a partnership between The Miami HEAT and Baptist Health Foundation, are helping Miami Cancer Institute conduct breakthrough research and clinical trials that will lead to effective new treatments for patients like Jose Monzon.

Jose is thankful for the option to participate in a clinical trial funded by Bounce Back from Cancer™ because it provided a new treatment approach when his prostate cancer spread to his lower back. He joined a study led by Rupesh Kotecha, M.D., chief of radiosurgery and director of central nervous system metastasis with Miami Cancer Institute, which is testing a unique form of highly precise radiation (termed radiosurgery) for patients like Jose who have received this therapy before and cannot undergo further conventional radiation.

2024 BOUNCE BACK FROM CANCER™ BY THE NUMBERS:

1,850+ registered participants

142 teams registered

7,100+ unique donations

$4.1 million raised

The goal of this clinical trial is to target the cancer in the spine effectively while reducing the risk of damaging the spinal cord from repeated treatments. Jose is deeply grateful to Dr. Kotecha and his team, as well as to Bounce Back from Cancer™ for funding the trial. He believes the new radiation approach is keeping him alive and maintaining his quality of life.

History Made

March 19, 2024, marked a historic day for Baptist Health and Baptist Health Foundation. On this day, we received the largest single donation in the nearly 65-year history of Baptist Health — a $50 million gift from Kenneth C. Griffin, founder and CEO of Miami-based hedge fund Citadel and founder of Griffin Catalyst.

The donation will support the expansion of Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute, including the creation of a cutting-edge center that will house Miami Neuroscience Institute and provide comprehensive patient care on the Baptist Health Baptist Hospital campus. The Kenneth C. Griffin Center at Miami Neuroscience Institute will also play a vital role in advancing research focused on neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases.

“Mr. Griffin’s extraordinary philanthropic commitment marks a pivotal moment in our mission to advance

brain science. Together, we are forging a legacy of innovation and compassion that will improve outcomes and change lives,” says Alex Villoch, chief executive officer of Baptist Health Foundation.

In addition to state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with the latest technology, the new facility will offer extensive space for Institute researchers to conduct their studies in the same building where they treat patients. This setup will enhance the Institute’s research program, fostering collaboration between researchers and clinicians. As a result, physician teamwork and innovation will reach new levels, driving breakthroughs in neuroscience and its various fields.

A gift of this size will significantly enhance neurological care in the region, sparking transformative change for the Institute.

As Alzheimer’s and other neurological conditions continue to rise, philanthropic support will play a crucial role in advancing research, improving patient care and driving medical breakthroughs.

“Baptist Health’s incredible team of dedicated doctors and researchers at Miami Neuroscience Institute bring hope and healing to individuals and families, both in our community and from around the world. I am proud to support Baptist Health’s work that is elevating Miami as a destination for world-class medical care,” says Kenneth C. Griffin.

This impactful investment highlights Baptist Health’s status as one of the nation’s leading healthcare institutions and a global leader in medical advancements, patient care, research and innovation. “This support is instrumental in advancing neuroscience research, and I hope it will inspire others to join us on this journey. Mr. Griffin’s gift positions our clinicians to redefine the landscape of neurological care in ways that will advance the field and, most importantly, drive impact for our patients,” says Michael W. McDermott, M.D., chief medical executive of Miami Neuroscience Institute.

A Reimagined Approach to Patient Care

At Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, taking care of the “whole patient” is a key component to providing patient-centric cancer care. Philanthropy plays an integral role in supporting Miami Cancer Institute’s patient support services by funding key programs and services for patients and their loved ones, with an emphasis on healing, recovery, wellness and disease prevention. These services include neuropsychological evaluations, psychiatric oncology consultations, nutrition interventions, acupuncture, patient navigation and the Arts in Medicine program.

Designed to provide support to families with a loved one in hospice, comfort carts are stocked with items to help meet the emotional and physical needs of the family during a difficult time. At Baptist Health Baptist Hospital, philanthropy helped fund the comfort carts to ease the strain on families, exemplifying our compassionate approach to care. Items distributed through the comfort carts included

blankets, tissues, hand sanitizer and lip balm for personal care and comfort, refreshments such as water, coffee and packaged snacks and even children’s games and coloring books. Thanks to donor support, Baptist Hospital can care for patients and their loved ones.

Baptist Health Fishermen’s Community Hospital is one of only two hospitals in the Florida Keys to offer medical oncology services. As part of Baptist Health Cancer Care, the oncology suite at Fishermen’s Community Hospital offers chemotherapy, molecular therapies, targeted therapies, transfusions and hydration services. Donor generosity is allowing patients in the Keys to receive their cancer care close to home, avoiding the long and often tedious drive to Miami. With an ongoing focus on quality and patient care, Baptist Health taps into philanthropic support to bring warm and meaningful care to patients who need it the most.

A New Era of Research

Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute is dedicated to advancing care through research. Philanthropy provides essential support to physicians conducting clinical trials at Miami Neuroscience Institute, including Italo Linfante, M.D, director of interventional neuroradiology. Dr. Linfante specializes in endovascular procedures and interventional neuroradiology, and has worked diligently on a randomized and blind clinical trial investigating a new drug that he co-developed. This drug has the potential to improve outcomes for acute ischemic stroke patients by delivering oxygen to the brain before blood flow is restored. Through philanthropic support, Dr. Linfante was able to publish his research and showcase evidence of the drug’s safety.

invasive procedures, demonstrating superior patient mobility and reduced postoperative pain. Donor support of the Institute’s Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction Fellowship allows fellows to receive comprehensive training in surgical treatment for hip and knee arthritis, while also participating in clinical and basic science research. The fellowship provides access to research staff to support project development and ongoing studies, part of the Institute’s focus on fostering a clinical, surgical and research environment for the brightest minds in orthopedics.

Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute is expanding its clinical trials and advancing innovative treatments to deliver exceptional patient outcomes. With the support of our donors, philanthropy is impacting all facets of research at the Institute — including publishing fees, study expenses, research associates and medical equipment. Philanthropically supported clinical trials are being conducted in radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgical oncology and hematology oncology, as well as pediatric, breast, head and neck, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecologic and lung cancers.

A Hub for the Best Minds in Medicine

Philanthropy is helping provide e-learning Continuing Medical Education programs for various clinicians, aligning with Baptist Health’s commitment to create a culture of continuous learning and innovation. Healthcare professionals who treat and care for patients with neurological disorders took advantage of an online course that offered state-of-the-art, evidence-based practices for clinicians through complex cases, novel treatment strategies and panel discussions. In addition, our donors supported the Antimicrobial Stewardship e-Learning Series, which offered easily accessible and tailored education on antimicrobial drugs.

Baptist Health prioritizes the recruitment and retention of expert healthcare leaders, nurses and allied health professionals from around the globe, fostering tomorrow’s local and diverse talent alongside our distinguished physician-scientists. Through academic partnerships with higher learning institutions in South Florida, the Baptist Health Nurse Scholars Program offers

faculty, classroom space and clinical sites for various nursing student programs. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, several nurse scholars had the opportunity to learn and train alongside Baptist Health clinicians. Philanthropic support for the Nurse Scholars Program is allowing Baptist Health to nurture the best minds in medicine.

Learning opportunities like medical symposiums, conferences and clinical training equipment help clinicians stay informed with the latest research, treatments and best practices to improve patient care. At Baptist Health, donor support impacted clinicians across the organization by funding the Echocardiography and Structural Heart Symposium and the Miami Neuroscience Symposium; sending nurses to conferences like the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Conference and Pathway to Excellence Conference; and bringing in state-of-the-art clinical training equipment for the Bethesda College of Health Sciences to enhance the quality of education and training provided.

A Global Center for Innovation

Our expert clinical staff at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute offer the most advanced treatments for neurological conditions. Funded through philanthropy, BrainPath® is an innovative tool used to help support precise navigation through natural pathways in the brain with minimal disruption to surrounding brain tissue. By using BrainPath®, Miami Neuroscience Institute is delivering the latest minimally invasive treatments and advanced technologies to patients.

Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute is utilizing philanthropic support to leverage the latest and most advanced technology to deliver top-tier heart and vascular care with the Corindus CorPath GRX robotic system. Equipped with automated procedural movements and precise anatomical measurements,

this robotic system ensures more consistent and predictable navigation of complex anatomies. It also keeps interventional cardiologists safe by enabling them to perform procedures from a radiation-shielded environment.

Miami Neuroscience Institute is a global leader in using multidisciplinary approaches to treat patients. VisionTree is a digital healthcare platform that helps patients and providers track health data, share information securely and manage care more effectively.

Thanks to this innovative platform, Dr. McDermott can track his patients’ progress and identify the optimal time to operate.

Utilized by Michael W. McDermott, M.D., chief medical executive of Miami Neuroscience Institute and the Irma and Kalman Bass Endowed Chair in Clinical Neuroscience, VisionTree is funded by philanthropy and has impacted Dr. McDermott’s observation study focusing on meningiomas. The platform offers tools to analyze collected data, allows patients to input their symptoms and supports clinicians in creating personalized care plans. Thanks to this innovative platform, Dr. McDermott can track his patients’ progress and identify the optimal time to operate.

“Donor generosity is having a tremendous impact on the quality of service we’re providing the community.”
Angela Arocha, R.N.

Angela Arocha is a registered nurse at West Kendall Baptist Hospital’s Healthy Hub. “It’s a place where anybody can get screened for blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, body mass index — even food insecurity and mental health — and it’s completely free,” she says. “Once we get the results, I provide education, information and referrals to make sure they get the care they need.”

She finds the work she does very rewarding. “I’ve been inspired by so many people that I’ve touched, not just providing them with an important service, but also with support emotionally,” she says. “It’s really been lifealtering for me.”

Angela is grateful to the Baptist Health Foundation donors who help fund the Healthy Hub. “The program can’t exist if we don’t have that support,” she says. “People appreciate our services so much, and we’re creating a healthier community.”

“ Patients always talk about how they feel cared for by the entire team in a holistic way.”

Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute

Sebastian Duncan-Portuondo, a visual artist in the Arts in Medicine program at Miami Cancer Institute, believes that creating art can support the healing process. “We work with our cancer patients and have a moment of beauty together,” he says. “It changes their perspective on the treatment experience.” What’s more, the program works on several levels. “It’s not always just about making art, but also the companionship and spending time together.”

Studies have shown that patient engagement with the visual and performing arts helps lessen anxiety and alleviate pain. “This program is treating the mind and soul as well as the body,” Sebastian says.

“It proves the power that art can have in someone’s most challenging moments.” Sebastian is grateful for the Arts in Medicine Program, which is fully funded through philanthropy. “It’s a wonderful job for an artist,” he says. “It allows us to continue our work while doing something meaningful in our community.”

Driven to Serve

Sherrill Hudson’s journey with Baptist Health began in 2013 when he made his first donation to Baptist Health Foundation. Driven by a desire to make a difference, he joined the Baptist Health Baptist Hospital board in 2015, where he served until 2022. Over the years, he and his wife, Mary Ann, have become more and more involved, deepening their support in countless ways.

In 2019, Sherrill joined Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute’s operating board, and today he proudly serves as its chair. His leadership has been pivotal in advancing critical initiatives, particularly in support of the new Baptist Health Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center.

In 2020, Sherrill joined the Baptist Health Board of Trustees, furthering his commitment to

our mission. He has become an incredible ambassador for our organization, engaging new donors and encouraging members of our community to become involved with Baptist Health.

Through his own personal network of friends, old college roommates and connections across South Florida, Sherrill has been a driving force in fundraising for Miami Cancer Institute. His work with Bounce Back from Cancer™ has placed him at the top of the leaderboard for the past two years, helping raise significant funds for cancer research.

Sherrill and Mary Ann’s generosity and leadership have created a meaningful legacy at Baptist Health, inspiring us all by building a strong foundation for the future. In 2024, Sherrill was named Baptist Health Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year.

Philanthropy Supports New Al and Jane

Baptist Health broke ground on the Al and Jane Nahmad Women’s Cancer Center on September 18, 2024. Located on the campus of Baptist Health Baptist Hospital, the Center is named in honor of Al and Jane Nahmad, longtime benefactors of Baptist Health.

Spanning 155,000 square feet, the Women’s Cancer Center will be housed in the new Keeley Pavilion and will deliver high-quality cancer care and pioneering research, and will offer an exceptional patient experience for women, who make up 65 percent of Miami Cancer Institute’s current patients.

The generous support of several Baptist Health Foundation donors was key in breaking ground on the Women’s Cancer Center, bringing the vision to life and paving the way for a state-of-the-art facility that will offer advanced treatments and compassionate care for women in our community and beyond.

“This represents a significant leap forward in our mission to provide comprehensive cancer care for women in our community. Thanks to the

Serving the Florida Keys

The Walsh family, owners of Ocean Properties Hotels and Resorts / OPAL Collection, made a $5 million gift to Baptist Health Foundation in support of the construction of the medical arts building at Baptist Health Fishermen’s Community Hospital.

The new hurricane-resistant Walsh Family Medical Arts Building spans nearly 10,000 square feet and will house primary care physician offices and such specialty services as orthopedics, gastroenterology, oncology infusion, physical therapy and rehabilitation services. It will allow the oncology infusion area inside the hospital to relocate to a bigger space, adding two more chairs and a lab area. The new building will also allow for greater clinical collaboration and make imaging

“We are very grateful to the Walsh family for this generous gift,” said Alex Villoch, CEO of Baptist Health Foundation. “Their support is helping to expand access to high-quality healthcare and expert physicians in the Middle Keys, so patients won’t have to travel far to get care.”

The Walshes are longtime donors to Baptist Health’s Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach and have supported many Baptist Health Foundation fundraising events.

“Partnering with Baptist Health was a great match, because our business, like theirs, is all about caring — caring for our guests and hospitality team like they care for their patients and staff,” said Mark Walsh. “We understand the importance of quality, available healthcare in the Florida Keys, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.”

“The Walsh Family Medical Arts Building represents yet another step forward in serving the health and wellness needs of our community,” said Drew Grossman, CEO of Fishermen’s Community Hospital and Mariners Hospital. “By consolidating services on one campus, this new facility extends Baptist Health’s commitment to provide the best healthcare to all residents and visitors in the Keys.”

Swaddled in Protection

At Baptist Health, the safety and care of our smallest and most vulnerable patients is a top priority. Every baby delivered at a Baptist Health hospital receives attentive, high-quality care, and thanks to the generous support of Baptist Health Foundation donors, we have taken even greater measures to protect them from birth to discharge and beyond.

Through philanthropy, we were able to bring the Hugs® Infant Protection Solution — the world’s leading infant security system, which protects nearly 2 million infants each year — to Baptist Health Homestead Hospital. Donor support helped purchase the infant tags and bands that are key to the system.

Additionally, it is the only infant tag that actively monitors its environment for potential sources of interference, providing the highest level of defense for the safety of our newborns.

Our commitment to infant safety extends beyond discharge, ensuring protective measures remain in place from the moment they leave our hospitals. Through philanthropy, infant car seats were purchased and provided to families in need to help with safe transportation. Designed to protect babies in the event of a car accident, infant car seats provide important support to their head, neck and spine.

The Hugs infant tag, though small, offers robust protection. Once secured around the infant’s ankle with a Hugs band, a layer of security is immediately activated. From the delivery room onward, the infant is safeguarded by tamper detection, exit detection and continuous monitoring.

Philanthropy has brought peace of mind to families by providing invaluable resources for the safety and protection of their infants. The generous support from our donors offers warmth and reassurance, reminding families that their community stands with them every step of the way.

Endowed Chairs

Celebrating Extraordinary

In 2024, Baptist Health Foundation celebrated the installation of four endowed chairs, honoring physicians who are committed to advancing Baptist Health’s impact through research and service.

Awarded to

Naiara Abreu Fraga Braghiroli, M.D., Ph.D.

At Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, this chair supports Dr. Braghiroli’s work in advanced skin cancer care, focusing on monitoring and diagnosing high-risk patients.

Barry T. Katzen Medical Director Endowed Chair Awarded to Tom C. Nguyen, M.D.

The endowment supports Dr. Nguyen’s work in furthering the development of Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute as a worldclass destination in providing advanced, multidisciplinary care, research and education, including innovative minimally invasive cardiovascular techniques and treatments.

José Milton Foundation Endowed Chair in Orthopedics Awarded to John W. Uribe, M.D.

The first endowed chair at Baptist Health Orthopedic Institute will support Dr. Uribe in advancing orthopedic patient care, research and innovation.

Kalman Bass Endowed Chair in Pain and Rehabilitative Medicine Awarded to Ronald B. Tolchin, D.O.

This chair supports Dr. Tolchin’s work at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute in advancing physiatry, also known as rehabilitation medicine, which focuses on diagnosing, preventing and treating disabilities of the brain, nerves, bones and muscles.

Powering Extraordinary Healthcare

Endowed chairs play a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare. An endowment represents a significant investment in enhancing patient care, innovation, research and education.

A generous $2 million gift from John and Mary Lou Dasburg in 2024 established the John and Mary Lou Dasburg Endowed Chair in Radiation Oncology and recognizes Minesh Mehta, M.D., deputy director and chief of radiation oncology at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute and an expert in radiation oncology, proton therapy and cancer research.

Since joining Miami Cancer Institute over six years ago, Dr. Mehta has been key in building its renowned radiation oncology program. Under his leadership, the program has become a global leader in cancer treatment and research. This chair will fund further research to tackle some of the most complex cancer cases.

Through an anonymous donation, the Distinguished Endowed Chair in Neurology was established in 2024 and awarded to Diego R. Torres-Russotto, M.D., chair of neurology at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute. This endowment will support Dr. Torres-Russotto’s important work to advance patient care, research and treatment in areas such as cognitive decline, movement disorders and Parkinson’s disease.

Philanthropic support of endowed chairs helps build a legacy that is far-reaching and transformative by elevating patient care through a culture of inquiry, curiosity and critical thinking. It is through the generosity of Baptist Health Foundation donors that we can continue elevating medical excellence at Baptist Health.

A Grateful Patient’s Story Sparks Her Employer’s Gift to Advance Healthcare

Anniella Tabraue, a mother of twin girls and a longtime South Florida resident, faced one of the most challenging times of her life when her daughters were born prematurely at 34 weeks. The twins were immediately taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Baptist Health Baptist Hospital for the specialized care they needed. During this already difficult time, Anniella encountered her own life-threatening medical complication, requiring her to spend several days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Reflecting on her experience, Anniella said, “If I had been anywhere else, I don’t know if I would have received this level of care, or even survived. I can’t think of a better healthcare organization in South Florida. I’m most grateful for my life and for the doctors who were there to help me so quickly.”

As the development sales director at MG Developer, a residential property development company, Anniella shared that her personal experience with Baptist Health served as an additional motivation for her

employer to make a meaningful impact through philanthropy. A generous $2 million donation from MG Developer was made in support of Baptist Health Doctors Hospital and will help establish The Village at Coral Gables — a 48-residence collection of townhomes, lofts, villas and flats — as a wellnessconscious community.

“We are thrilled to partner with MG Developer and grateful for their generosity,” said Alex Villoch, CEO of Baptist Health Foundation. “This donation allows Doctors Hospital to have the resources it needs to provide exceptional care to patients and their families, while promoting healthy lifestyles and offering an additional benefit for residents of The Village. It’s a gift that will continue to support healthcare excellence in this community.”

Truly touched by the care she and her daughters received, Anniella is proud to have played a small role in bringing this donation to life. She states, “I think my having that experience helped push for that partnership with Baptist Health — I really believed in it.” Thanks to Anniella and MG Developer, more members of our community will have important access to high-quality care.

Philanthropy Helps Empower

Lucas Martinez had just completed his first year at Vanderbilt University when he was accepted into the inaugural cohort of the Neuroscience Research Scholars Program at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute in 2023. The Miami native and Christopher Columbus High School grad had always been interested in neuroscience. “I’m genuinely interested in how the brain works — the neural mechanisms that affect the way we think, the way we live,” he says.

The program, which is funded by philanthropy, gave Lucas the opportunity to participate in research in neurology, physiatry

and neurosurgery. During the 12-week program, he was mentored by Michael McDermott, M.D., a neurosurgeon and chief medical executive at Miami Neuroscience Institute and the Irma and Kalman Bass Endowed Chair in Clinical Neuroscience. “For an undergrad, being able to work in neurosurgery is hard to do, so it was an amazing experience,” he says.

Lucas is now working in Vanderbilt’s neurosurgery labs, has started a nonprofit program to improve stroke outcomes and plans to attend medical school in Miami. He is grateful to Baptist Health Foundation donors for the opportunities he received. “I

honestly believe this program can be one of the best and most sought-after in the country,” he says.

The program launched its second cohort of research scholars in 2024, including research scholar Braxton Jewett, who is profoundly grateful for Baptist Health Foundation donors, stating, “your kindness and generosity made all of this possible.”

Philanthropy is driving the development of vital academic research programs that nurture and cultivate talent, another example of how Baptist Health is fostering the next generation medical professionals.

the Next Generation

The recently opened Baptist Health Education Center marks a new beginning for healthcare education at Baptist Health. Spanning 38,000 square feet, this advanced facility offers a multidisciplinary learning environment for medical, nursing and clinical professionals.

The Education Center features 10 fully equipped surgical and medical simulation rooms, a robotics suite, virtual reality spaces, and specialized settings such as an Emergency Department room, eICU, hybrid OR, trauma bay and outpatient exam rooms, simulating various medical situations. With

dedicated debriefing rooms, procedural labs and classrooms, the Education Center will elevate healthcare education and training for years to come, positioning Baptist Health as a hub for the best minds in medicine.

Thanks to the generosity of Baptist Health Foundation donors, philanthropic funds were used to facilitate the expansion of a cutting-edge simulation lab at the Education Center. The lab offers healthcare professionals immersive, real-world scenario training, helping them enhance their skills and master new technologies and medical advancements.

Philanthropy plays a vital role in helping create and foster innovative educational opportunities, strengthening the resources needed to attract and retain top medical professionals. Baptist Health Foundation’s support of the Education Center is a testament to our commitment to pioneer healthcare solutions through generosity, creating a culture of continuous learning and innovation and providing compassionate, high-quality care for our community.
