Message from Troy Wells President and CEO of Baptist Health

Every organization has its own way of defining positive growth. At Baptist Health, we are very intentional in how we grow, and we don’t want to grow just for growth’s sake. Our passion has always been growing the number of people and communities we serve. With our Baptist Health strategic plan as our guide, we continue to grow our points of access, our workforce, and our partnerships. All of this enables us to serve more Arkansans and communities. Importantly, we also want to see growth of individuals within our organization. Collectively we become better when individually we continue to grow clinically, professionally, and spiritually. Being all our best means always changing and improving. Our team is dedicated to providing the best health care possible in the safest possible way. As we reflect on 2023, let’s celebrate all of our successes and dream big for what we can accomplish in the years to come.

Change to Keep Message From the Director of Pastoral Care

Michael Rogers

Perspective is critical because it matters how we see others, our purpose, and our future. Here at Baptist Health, our faith shapes our worldview. This faith shows up in our decision-making, compassionate care, and a genuine love for others. There’s an old cliche that says, “People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care!” Baptist Health’s mission is to provide quality patient service and respond to the changing needs of Arkansans with Christian compassion. Quality care is a high priority despite the cost and demands of the day. We value our patients and families by providing them with quality service. These times are constantly changing, and it demands our methodologies to change –– but not at the expense of our quality. Our Christian compassion demonstrates our quality. Christ was often moved with compassion before he healed those afflicted by disease. We must continue to see others through the lens of Christ and as an opportunity to show the love of Christ. Baptist Health believes that health care is more than a business. We are a healing ministry. Our belief system gives us perspective on our purpose. To be a good steward of God’s blessing, we must approach this work from a business perspective. However, our belief reminds us that we are more than a business. Spirituality connects us with a purpose that goes beyond ourselves. This calling is to be a healing ministry. We are in the service of providing ways that foster healing and growth. I am excited that you and I are a part of a healing ministry that gives us purpose outside ourselves. Theologian Howard Thurman said it best when he stated, “Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Baptist Health’s vision is to improve the health of Arkansans by changing the way health care is delivered. When we look at our vision, it should make us excited for our future. We have so many opportunities for advancement and to improve the quality of life for so many Arkansans. Presently, we have seen this in our use of technology and by adding many more access points that will help others get the necessary care they need. In these changing times, our vision reminds us that we will also change. In my church, we sing a hymn that reminds me of our vision. This hymn is named “A Charge to Keep I Have” by Charles Wesley. Two stanzas say “A charge to keep I have, a God to glorify, a neverdying soul to save, and fit it for the sky. To serve the present age, my calling to fulfill, O may it all my pow’rs engage to do my Master’s will!” 3

Baptist Health Grows System by Adding 12th Hospital Baptist Health closed out 2023 with a move that created significant growth for the health care system with the addition of the Drew Memorial Health System in Monticello. Drew Memorial, a 60-bed hospital now rebranded as Baptist Health Medical Center-Drew County, serves a population of 200,000 in southeast Arkansas and extends Baptist Health’s reach into a new area of the state. The addition of the Drew Memorial system also includes two clinics and home health operations. Similar to when the Fort Smith and Van Buren hospitals were added to the system in 2018, Baptist Health is able to reach into a new area to provide more access and better serve the health needs in southeast Arkansas. The Drew County hospital, which is Baptist Health’s 12th in the system, serves a completely new community that expands the service area. Continuing to grow Baptist Health’s comprehensive statewide network with coordinated services supports the vision of improving the health of Arkansans by changing the way health care is delivered. Baptist Health was approached about a possible merger by the Drew Memorial Health System, a non-profit organization that has operated in Monticello for more than 35 years. In the current health care environment, it is not uncommon for independent community hospitals to look for a system partner. Baptist Health has a proven track

record for operating its rural hospitals efficiently, allowing them to remain viable while providing quality health care in much needed areas of the state. Monticello’s hospital is extremely important to the surrounding communities, and Baptist Health has the experience and expertise to help it succeed and continue to provide a high level of care for the residents of south Arkansas. Baptist Health assessed the medical staff, community, facilities, operating performance, history, and other market factors to determine the feasibility of this addition to the system. After an extensive review, Baptist Health concluded that the Monticello hospital was a great fit. Baptist Health Medical Center-Drew County offers numerous services such as a cancer and infusion center, emergency department, wound center, rehab therapy, respiratory therapy, women’s services, a sleep center, radiology, and laboratory, among others. The addition of Baptist Health Medical Center-Drew County is a positive addition to Baptist Health that makes the system larger and serves more people both inside and outside the hospital walls. As Baptist Health serves more people, it will continue to provide faith-based health care that strengthens communities and encourages healthy lifestyles, which is consistent with Baptist Health’s belief that we are more than a business –– we are a healing ministry. 5

GROWING Women’s & Children’s Services

to Improve Maternal and Infant Health

6

Arkansas has the highest maternal mortality rate in the country, and the state has the third-highest infant mortality rate. Arkansas experiences 45 pregnancy-related deaths per 100,000 births thanks in part to the state’s high incidence of chronic disease, rural areas without adequate health care services, and high rates of poverty. But an estimated 90% of those deaths are preventable –– and Baptist Health is doing something about it. Women’s & Children’s Services has always been an important part of Baptist Health’s healing ministry, and this year provided an opportunity to evaluate ways to improve the state’s rankings in these critical areas of health care. Throughout 2023, Baptist Health has been hard at work implementing a strategic plan for Women’s & Children’s Services that analyzed new locations for care, explored strategies for physician integration, and developed targeted tactics to reach more people. The project started early in the year with a completion of a structural analysis on Women’s & Children’s Services that included a look at physician manpower and integration, an assessment of consumer and community needs, and a prioritization analysis. One key initiative in development is to expand Baptist Health’s reach by utilizing the Mobile Health Unit to provide mid-level OB care to high-risk mothers in the top five highrisk areas of Arkansas. The initial goal is to target and serve 500 new pregnant women in Sebastian, Drew, Phillips, Arkansas, and St. Francis counties –– counties identified as having the highest number of high-risk pregnancies –– to impact and improve maternal and infant mortality. But in the long-term, Baptist Health hopes to go from reaching hundreds of women to thousands. Plans to boost the Baptist Health pregnancy wellness centers in Little Rock and North Little Rock have also been developed to maximize the services these centers offer, which include free pregnancy testing, health screenings for

mothers, newborn assessments, breastfeeding assessments, car seat installation, CPR classes, and Medicaid referral letters. Many pregnant women seek out a Baptist Health pregnancy wellness center when they have nowhere else to turn and are desperate to find resources to help with their pregnancy and newborn. Often, they are uninsured and have no doctor when they arrive. Baptist Health’s pregnancy wellness centers provide free education on healthy pregnancy, preparing for childbirth, stages of labor, recovery and postpartum care, newborn care, developmental milestones, and childhood nutrition. As part of this Women’s & Children’s initiative, Baptist Health’s new ARHOME (Arkansas Health and Opportunity for Me) program, which was in the very early stages of its launch in late 2023, will have a focus on women with highrisk pregnancies, new mothers, and babies as part of its services aimed at improving the lives of at-risk populations. Baptist Health ARHOME plans to extend care into the homes of the mothers to develop a more intimate relationship and then follow the moms and track data until the children reach 2 years old. The team working on this initiative has also developed a Maternal Navigator concept for patient communication and monitoring, and a $200,000 grant application has been submitted to support the program. The team is also in the process of implementing a program for laborists, which is the OB/GYN version of hospitalists, for the Baptist Health Western and Central regions into 2024 and continues concentrated recruitment efforts for new providers including OB/GYNs and nurse midwives. This project is all about reaching out to people in need and earning their trust in the health care system. This is a key project in improving access to maternal and prenatal care, and Baptist Health will be on a mission in the coming years to make a difference in the state’s health ranking.

New Brand Campaign Focuses on Theme of ‘FOR YOU. FOR LIFE.’ The health care industry has changed significantly in the last several years, and so has Baptist Health. “Keep On Amazing” and “All Our Best” have served as enduring themes for Baptist Health during the last two decades both externally through marketing campaigns and internally in employee communications, but late 2023 ushered in a new era in brand messaging with the launch of a new marketing campaign. The newest brand campaign follows in the footsteps of those previous taglines to capitalize on a new theme introduced with Baptist Health’s women’s campaign earlier this year –– “For You. For Life.” The goal of the new “For You. For Life.” campaign is to drive Arkansans to connect emotionally with the values of Baptist Health and invite us to be a part of enabling their life story. The focus of the campaign includes holistic health care, personalized care, and culturally relevant and empathetic messaging. Health and wellness have steadily become more of a priority among health care consumers in recent years, and Arkansans are looking to Baptist Health now more than ever to provide individualized, whole-person health care for every stage of life. A person’s health is a part of their unique identity –– and the care is private and personalized to their specific needs. Life isn’t just about living –– it’s about living well. And Baptist Health wants to be there through every step of life’s journey. “For You. For Life.” speaks to the purpose of health care and reminds us who Baptist Health is serving and the partnership with all those who seek our care for themselves and their family members. Since the new campaign is centered around patients, the new television commercials, print and social media ads, and other messaging feature actual Baptist Health patients and their stories of how Baptist Health contributed to an important life moment. The commitment to personalized care and wellness is embodied through the song “Living My Best Life” –– which is used in the new Baptist Health commercials –– by nationally renowned singer/ songwriter Ben Rector. Rector’s upbeat and relatable music has attracted a loyal fan base, especially among millennials and Gen Zers. An avid Razorback fan and UA graduate, Rector maintains a close connection to Arkansas, presenting Baptist Health with the opportunity to tap into this fan base.

Workforce Development & Engagement Attracting, retaining, and developing the next generation of caregivers, physicians, and leaders reflective of the diversity of the community we serve. 10

Innovative Initiatives Improving Retention and Recruitment Baptist Health’s efforts to reduce the overall system turnover rate, improve recruitment metrics, and reduce staff vacancy rates found great success in 2023 thanks to a lot of work by teams and committees implementing innovative ideas to address staffing issues in a post-pandemic health care world. The primary goals for 2023 included providing adequate staffing at the bedside and other key positions, reducing external travel staffing needs, improving employee retention and turnover, and conducting an employee experience survey to achieve a baseline score with resulting action plans. During the pandemic, Baptist Health, like other hospitals and health systems across the country, experienced an attrition of bedside caregivers who chose to leave the bedside in favor of other areas of care outside the hospital setting that were perceived as having a lower risk of exposure. Recruiting staff back to the bedside has been an important mission coming out of the pandemic, and Baptist Health has used a targeted approach with multiple strategies to address the need. Retention of employees was also a top priority because successful recruitment of new employees will not provide adequate solutions without retaining the existing staff. Baptist Health conducted an extensive review of market salaries as part of a new strategy to position the system as a salary leader for nursing and other allied health positions such as radiology. To successfully recruit, Baptist Health needed to pay in the upper range of the market rather than past approaches to pay closer to the middle. This aggressive pay strategy was packaged with new advancement ladders to show nurses working in the units not only how they can advance their careers but also earn additional certifications and receive bonuses. The 5% pay increase across the board to all employees to kick off 2023 was icing on the

cake to continue to lead the market for nurses. This momentum in retaining and recruiting staff in 2023 in turn allowed Baptist Health to reduce the reliance on traveling nurses, whose use skyrocketed at hospitals across the country during the pandemic to address staffing shortages. Recognizing that some nurses and other caregivers want traveling positions, and to capitalize on that pool of caregivers, Baptist Health created an innovative internal travel pool in which nurses, radiology techs, and respiratory therapists, for example, could take advantage of traveling within the system rather than staying at one hospital. These positions are contracted employees just like an external travel company but are paid a premium in return for Baptist Health to send them to whatever campus or area is in greatest need. This has enabled Baptist Health to recruit a new, mobile workforce that is ready to be in North Little Rock one day and Conway the next if the need arises. Another key recruitment initiative that is paying off has been new scholarship options at Baptist Health College Little Rock. One popular scholarship program pays for a student’s education if the student pays for the first semester and then commits to working for Baptist Health for two to three years after graduation. Another program offered to senior students, Senior Assistance, was changed in 2023. The program provides financial help to students in their last semester of school. This program has allowed Baptist Health to target areas with large vacancies by offering the assistance to seniors who agree to work in areas where there is a larger staffing need for a commitment to Baptist Health. A new and amazing program for Baptist Health has been the Reach for the Stars scholarship program through the Baptist Health Foundation, which is available exclusively to Baptist Health employees with 11

100% tuition and expenses paid to become an RN. This allows the student to attend nursing school without the financial worry associated with schooling and to graduate debt free. Baptist Health has also hired recruitment and retention specialists whose sole focus is exactly what is in their titles –– to recruit staff and help to improve current operations in order to retain staff. The goal is for these specialists to talk to students during their clinical time and work with them while they are on a hospital campus as well as going to recruiting events. They also give the same attention to existing staff by talking to them about things that will keep them at Baptist Health and areas we need to improve. To continue to find ways to improve the employee experience and improve retention, some campuses have put snack carts on the nursing units with items such as candy bars, chips, and other snacks to provide some quick options even when they don’t have time to get away to buy a snack elsewhere. The North Little Rock campus created a relaxation room with a massage chair to help find a place to reenergize during the day. Many hospital campuses have started their own committees focused on employee appreciation and engagement, which also helps with retention. Shared governance is 12

giving staff a voice in designing workflows and getting more input into improvements related to the workforce. Thanks to this retention and recruitment initiative, Baptist Health beat its turnover rate goal for the year and is on the way to decreasing it to pre-pandemic levels. The vacancy rate also continues to decrease and is nearing the goal for 2023. Decreasing the vacancy rate means that more staff has been hired, but it also means the turnover rate has decreased. Recruitment and retention go hand in hand in any successful staffing strategy. In 2024, Baptist Health plans to expand its virtual workforce efforts that were under way in 2023. This new virtual workforce component consists of nurses and patient care techs who may not want the physical wear and tear of a 12-hour shift but can provide major relief to nurses in the units by relieving them of admission and discharge workflows, for example. The expectation for 2024 is that virtual nursing will continue to expand throughout the system to take time-consuming and complex workflows away to give direct relief to nurses at the bedside and decrease some of their burden.

Reach for the Stars - January 2023

60 Baptist Health Employees Receive Full-Tuition Nursing Scholarships Making Career Dreams Come True Since the Reach for the Stars scholarship program’s inceptions last year, 60 Baptist Health employees have now been given life-changing full-tuition scholarships to obtain their RN and BSN degrees –– and three employees have already graduated with their RN degree thanks to Reach for the Stars making this opportunity a financial reality. The amount of funding received through the Baptist Health Foundation for these 60 Reach for the Stars scholarship recipients totals over $1 million –– all to make the health care career dreams of Baptist Health employees come true! The Reach for the Stars scholarship program at Baptist Health is fully funded by an anonymous donor through the Baptist Health Foundation. The scholarship provides these employees with a full ride that covers 100 percent of eligible costs including tuition, educational materials, uniforms, and other applicable expenses. Additionally, all scholarship recipients qualify to receive full tuition and supplies if they enroll in a BSN program within six months of obtaining their RN degree.

“Peace of mind. Vote of confidence. Investment in the future. I could use any one or all these statements to interpret the feeling I felt on hearing I am an awardee of this extraordinary scholarship. It gives me peace of mind to know I will have all the resources I need to complete my nursing degree debt free and worry free. It tells me that Baptist Health supports me and is confident in my success. It also shows that Baptist Health is serious about the future of health care by their investment in the people who choose to serve in this most noble field. I can focus on my studies knowing that Baptist Health is here for me, and that at the end of my studies I have a place to work and grow for years to come.”

Meloney Harris, Patient Care Tech II, BHMC-Little Rock

“Receiving this aid has meant more than one might think –– it means support, stability, and opportunities. With this scholarship, Baptist Health has demonstrated their trust and respect in my potential. And because of that, I hope to repay that faith and generosity in the years to come. Thank you again for this incredible opportunity.”

First Year of Medical Sciences Academy at Southwest Opened New Doors of Learning Baptist Health’s strategic priority of developing the next generation of caregivers reached into new territory for the 2022-23 academic year with its first venture into a medical sciences academy program at Little Rock Southwest High School. Thanks to the work of many staff members from Baptist Health who were involved in the program during the past year, students at Southwest had a benefit no other high school in the area had –– a new avenue to pursue an interest in a health care profession at an earlier age and one that would help them be more prepared for their next steps in pursuing a health care career after high school. Students were exposed to a wide variety of health care career options through guest speakers from Baptist Health as well as gain hands-on experience through a project-based learning curriculum with a specialized classroom set up with equipment specifically to learn about patient care. Within the Baptist Health Academy of Medical Sciences at Southwest, there were 95 students participating in the health and nutrition track, 101 students in sports medicine, and 78 students in biomedical sciences. Baptist Health sent a diverse group of 40 guest speakers who provided their expertise during 75 classes throughout the year. Baptist Health was very intentional about providing speakers who covered a vast array of health careers including clinical, administrative, research, education, and community outreach. Licensures, certifications, and various degrees were also discussed. Baptist Health also provided extensive health care tours on the BHMC-Little Rock campus to 38 sophomores and 32 juniors during the year, and Baptist Health participated in a career exposure fair that included the recruitment team to provide career information, the Baptist Health College team to provide education information, and the Baptist Health Mobile Health Unit to experience community outreach. 14

Baptist Health Named as One of 'America's Greatest Workplaces' Baptist Health was grateful to be nationally recognized in 2023 as an organization that truly values and celebrates the unique contributions of employees when Newsweek named the system to the list of America’s Greatest Workplaces. The initiatives that earned this recognition are important because a supportive and welcoming environment for employees in turn results in a better overall experience for the patients we serve. In addition to being named one of America’s Greatest Workplaces, Baptist Health also earned a place in these Newsweek award categories: • America’s Greatest Workplaces for Women • America’s Greatest Workplaces for Parents & Families • America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity • America’s Greatest Workplaces for Job Starters Baptist Health maintains a number of benefits to help parents and families, including on-site child care, tuition assistance, loan forgiveness, a credit union, an employee food pantry, and an abundance of company-provided benefits and discounts. Baptist Health has a number of ongoing initiatives that are dedicated to celebrating the health care organization’s diverse workforce. An annual survey asks employees for valuable feedback, and a diversity and inclusion committee comprised of employees meets monthly to assess this area. System leaders are trained in unconscious bias to further foster an inclusive work environment.

Baptist Health UAMS GME Program Celebrates More Resident Spots and Trained Physicians

The Baptist Health-UAMS Medical Education Program continued to tackle physician shortages with the announcement of more resident spots and the completed training of more physicians into the medical field. In 2023, the program increased the number of internal medicine residents admitted from 12 to 15 per year while the psychiatry program increased the number of residents from four to six per year. The Baptist Health-UAMS Medical Education Program also celebrated the completion of residency requirements for 24 physicians in addition to commissioning 12 other physicians for fellowship training in specialty fields. The Baptist Health-UAMS Medical Education Program welcomed 43 residents in 2023 for training in internal medicine, family medicine, psychiatry, and transitional year programs. Within the next two years, it will grow to a total of 117 residents once all four programs have reached full maturation. Baptist Health and the UAMS College of Medicine partnered in 2018 to create the four residency programs in response to an ongoing national shortage of primary care physicians and the expanding health care needs in Arkansas. Programs began resident training in 2019. Studies show that physicians are more likely to practice close to where they did their residencies –– 75% stay within 75 miles of where they trained.

New ARHOME Project Preparing to Do Big Things in 2024 In 2023, Baptist Health received approval to contract with the state Department of Human Services to provide ARHOME (Arkansas Health and Opportunity for Me) services for maternal and rural programs. These services focus on improving the lives of three at-risk populations: • Women with high-risk pregnancies, new mothers, and babies • Arkansans living in rural communities facing mental health and substance-use disorders • Young adults who are at greatest risk for poor health outcomes ARHOME replaced Arkansas Works last year and uses Medicaid funding to buy private health insurance for patients. ARHOME also encourages patients to be an active partner with their health care plan and work together to reach health and well-being goals. Toward the end of 2023, Baptist Health worked on applications for maternal and rural programs, coordinating contracts with providers and community organizations, and building out the operations for this program, which included hiring a system director to run it. Look for big things from this new initiative to help better serve populations in need in 2024.

Baptist Health Partnership With UAMS Opens New Cancer Clinic on Little Rock Campus Cancer care is a critical component in providing quality health care to the community. Following in the momentum of 2022 after the partnership was announced in 2021, Baptist Health and UAMS continued the growth of innovative cancer care in Arkansas that will expand access to serve more Arkansans with the most advanced care available. In May, Baptist Health and UAMS held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially commemorate the opening of the new cancer clinic and infusion center on the campus of BHMC-Little Rock. UAMS Baptist Health Cancer Clinic-Little Rock, in Suite 500 of the Hickingbotham Outpatient Center, manages the full spectrum of options for cancer patients such as prescribing the appropriate chemotherapy and leading a multidisciplinary approach to address all of a cancer patient’s health needs. The new cancer center marks the next step in the partnership with Baptist Health and UAMS working together to expand access to the most advanced cancer care to every corner of our state. More entry points to care can increase early diagnoses and result in better outcomes. UAMS Baptist Health Cancer Clinic-Little Rock is staffed by an experienced team of hematology/oncology, gynecologic oncology, and neuro-oncology specialists from the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, as well as a variety of other surgical and non-surgical oncology specialists. With disease-specific expertise in more than 35 cancer types, medical oncologists are trained to manage a patient's overall care and treatment plan, which may involve a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and other

interventions. Specialists from all areas of cancer care work together to develop a personalized treatment plan for each patient. In addition to providing treatment, medical oncologists may also manage the side effects of cancer and its treatments, provide supportive care to patients and their families, and coordinate care with other health care providers. They may also conduct clinical research and participate in the development of new cancer treatments. This continues the partnership’s mission to bring cutting-edge treatment to patients where they need it with a sophisticated level of care enhanced by the latest research and clinical trials. The partnership with UAMS leverages Baptist Health’s network of 12 hospitals and 100 clinics to bridge the gaps in the state’s cancer care network. In addition to the new clinic that opened in Little Rock in 2023, other locations involving the Baptist Health and UAMS cancer care partnership can be found on the North Little Rock and Fort Smith campuses.

Partnership Produces State’s First Proton Center for World-Class Cancer Therapy Recognizing the burden on patients forced to travel out of state for this soughtafter therapy, Baptist Health, UAMS, and Arkansas Children’s joined forces with Proton International to build the state’s first proton therapy center in Arkansas. The Proton Center of Arkansas opened in September at the UAMS campus, becoming the first of its kind in the state and only the 43rd in the nation to provide the most advanced cancer radiation treatment in the world. Proton therapy is a cutting-edge form of radiation that uses positively charged proton particles to destroy tumors, often in hardto-reach areas, with greater precision and 17

significantly less damage to healthy organs and tissues. Patients receiving proton therapy have less severe and fewer side effects than conventional X-ray radiation, which improves their recovery time and quality of life. Along with the UAMS Baptist Health Cancer Clinic and Infusion Center, Arkansas’ first proton center is another example of how strategic collaboration with other leading health care providers can improve the health of Arkansans. Proton therapy is used to treat a wide range of cancers in both children and adults, including brain, spine, breast, esophageal, head and neck, liver, lung, lymphomas, eye, pancreatic, and sarcomas. Proton therapy is the preferred treatment for children who face risks from unnecessary radiation exposure that adults do not, such as developmental delays, hormone deficiencies, effects on bone growth, and potential longterm effects of secondary cancers in exposed tissues. The Proton Center is part of the new $65 million UAMS Radiation Oncology Center, which opened in July in a building adjacent 18

to the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. The Proton Center occupies 9,000 square feet on the second floor of the three-story center and includes the proton treatment room, a CT room to prepare patients for proton therapy, a high-dose (HDR) radiation room, gowning rooms, recovery rooms, an anesthesia room, eight exam rooms, a large family area for pediatric patients, and a physician work room. The proton treatment room features a unique ambient experience that allows patients to choose a room theme and color that is digitally displayed on the walls and ceiling. This is especially helpful in reducing anxiety in children during treatment. The 55-ton cyclotron, a type of particle accelerator that powers the proton beam, made a cross-country journey by land and sea to Little Rock. Starting in Belgium, the massive equipment that included the 75-ton gantry, traveled by sea for five weeks, then by police escort on six semi-tractor trailers from the Port of Houston to Little Rock.

Improving the Patient Experience With Quality and Safety Baptist Health continues to design various initiatives under the High Reliability Organization (HRO) implementation plan –– all in an effort to provide a safer environment for patients, visitors, and employees. IN 2023, Baptist Health’s HRO efforts focused significantly on developing a more robust Root Cause Analysis (RCA) process that provided a framework for Baptist Health staff to investigate safety events in further detail. By doing so, Baptist Health identified deeper root causes to these safety events, which allowed us to generate more effective action plans to help prevent the same event from occurring again. Action items are now rated by their strength of action, which is based on how effective certain types of actions are at reducing the chance of an error in a sustainable way with less chance of relapse. Training sessions were held with outside experts in the Root Cause Analysis process that was adopted along with side-by-side guidance during events as competency with the RCA model was built. After initial training and implementation, executive sponsors were identified, trained, and began supporting the new process and pushing for actions that were strong and meaningful to reduce the likelihood of events. As a result of this more robust process, Baptist Health has seen a reduction of “deja vu” events, or events that look very similar if not exactly like those that have occurred in the past. A large part of building an HRO team and competency within Baptist Health is culture change, which addresses system failures and the unwavering expectation of achieving zero harm. In 2023, Baptist Health began deploying leadership safety

22

skills, universal safety skills, and universal relationship skills to build and shape the culture at all levels. By the end of the year, these skills began appearing widely in employee communications across the system. Baptist Health’s HRO initiative started in 2021 as the next iteration of continual improvement of quality outcomes and safety events. The initiative provides evidence-based practices around leadership and individual skills that promote these outcomes and encourages continued excellence in patient care delivery. Two additional items that began in 2023 will have a significant impact on safety within Baptist Health. The first, Epic’s Beaker module, will affect safety and efficiency of lab-based safety events. The second involves installing a new policy management software that will allow Baptist Health to better access policies, protocols, and procedures that guide the standard of care and the culture of the organization. As part of Baptist Health’s commitment to excellent patient care, the system began self-reporting quality and safety data to Leapfrog in the fall of 2021. Leapfrog is a nonprofit organization that collects publicly reported and self-reported quality data from health care organizations and uses the data to evaluate performance around quality and safety. Once Leapfrog completes an evaluation, letter grades are released to represent an organization’s overall performance. These letter grades range from an “A” to an “F” and consider measures that pertain to clinical outcomes, patient experience, and structures that promote safety and quality. Baptist Health is committed to achieving an “A” rating with Leapfrog for all of its participating hospitals.

Command Center Helping 'No Patient Wait for Care' Baptist Health is striving more than ever to provide timely, safe, and efficient medical care to patients from across the state –– without subjecting them to long and unnecessary wait times. A major component of this in 2023 was ensuring that all patients receive the right care they need, when they need it, and in the right locations that can provide that

24

specific care. This process and commitment is not only critical for our patients’ health and well-being but also for the overall effectiveness of the health care system. Reducing patient wait times to receive emergency care was a key objective due to the fact that delayed care can worsen a patient’s condition, leading to complications or more severe health issues.

In 2023, the Baptist Health Command Center has been able to increase inpatient admissions, decrease diversion or delay use by 10% over 2022, improve the median acute transfer acceptance turnaround time, improve acceptance of emergency department transfers in less than five minutes, and reduce the number of patients transferred to other locations outside of the system due to capability and capacity. This year, the Baptist Health Command Center has improved communication and coordination among various hospital departments and staff. The Command Center is the initial point of access for all patients choosing Baptist Health as a place to be transferred to. The staff facilitate the sharing of information and real-time updates, ensuring that everyone is on the same page. Another process within the Command Center called “level loading” aims to distribute patients more evenly across the system, which helps optimize the use of resources such as medical staff, hospital beds, and equipment –– all while helping Baptist Health avoid diversion, or rerouting of patients. The Command Center currently tracks emergency department diversion metrics in real-time to help play a key role in working to keep the hospitals off diversion. Baptist Health has developed a process that allows for immediate text messages when certain thresholds of diversion metrics are met to help drive action based on the need. For example, when Baptist Health reaches a certain threshold of patients waiting for beds in the emergency department, an automated alert goes out to select staff –– who have specific actions that each is responsible for –– to help move patients so that we can remain off diversion. Advanced software now replaces multiple phone calls, with a single unified message that goes to all care providers. This allows Baptist Health to provide faster care and see reduced treatment times that ultimately improve the lives of patients.

The monitoring tools provide real-time data on patient flow, bed availability, staff allocation, and equipment utilization. This information enables hospital staff to make informed decisions quickly and address barriers. Predictive analytics allow Baptist Health to forecast patient influx, future barriers, and resource demands. While not directly responsible for staffing, the Command Center can proactively adjust staffing levels and resource allocation using the Central Staffing office. Over the past year, the Command Center has also been involved in patient care and has had a profound impact on several diseases. Command Center nurses look to identify potential cases with suspected sepsis by discussing patient care and clinical signs of the patient. They then review the sepsis checklist with the referring hospital and request the transferring facility consider initiating sepsis guidelines while preparing for transport. Baptist Health provides similar guidance for other time-sensitive emergencies like stroke and cardiac patients. In 2023, the Command Center initiated a process that allows communication specialists within to collaborate with and take on duties once held by case management teams in Little Rock and North Little Rock. This new process takes the logistics and transport coordination of patients leaving the hospital by ambulance. Communication specialists work directly with the local EMS service to prioritize and coordinate transfers based on the current need of the system when it comes to emergency department admissions. Baptist Health continually looks at stateof-the-art technology and infrastructure to ensure that it is equipped with the latest communication systems, data analytics tools, monitoring equipment, and backup power sources –– all for the benefit of our patients.

Population Health Providing High-Quality, Innovative Care at Lower Costs

26

Baptist Health’s Population Health Service Organization and value-based care initiatives continued their momentum in 2023 in several areas with the overall goals to lower the cost of care, improve health care quality, and reduce health care disparities making great progress. Here are some of the many highlights from progress made over the past year: The BH/UAMS Accountable Care Organization that is supported by the PHSO was notified in 2023 that it saved $18 million in 2022 compared to expected expenses. This resulted in a $12.5 million reward from CMS. These funds are being used to reward physicians and get new resources to help provide better care. All but one of the value based contracts have been redone to include new care management resources that help to better coordinate and manage care for patients with complex needs, reward providers for providing increased value of care to patients, and better collaborate with payers. Also, two new payer contracts have been completed. The PHSO has taken a lead role in identifying health care disparities in our communities, setting goals to improve those disparities and implementing tactics to reach those goals. The initial goals were centered on building infrastructure to find the disparities. In 2023, two areas of health care outcome disparities have been identified and will be the primary equity focus for 2024.

Physician engagement has been improved with quarterly POD meetings for all primary care physicians. Also, three new associate medical directors have been hired to increase provider engagement. The AMDs are full-time practicing physicians who will support educating physicians about performance opportunities. They will also help identify new opportunities to improve outcomes for patients. Our independent primary care physicians have new programs to support their work. They have increased access to care management staff, improved support in reporting care gaps to payers by PHSO staff, and have a new incentive program that rewards their office staff for closing care gaps. One of the AMDs is an independent physician. Structured Integrated Primary Care Pharmacy Program provides expanded coverage for all BH medical group (AHG/BHS) clinics. This program uses pharmacists in improving clinical outcomes for patients with diabetes and hypertension through evidence-based and standardized protocols that are approved by physicians. Growth continued for our care management work. We now have 30 care management staff, which is up from 18 in 2021. Patient enrollment in care management programs has increased by 63% so far from 2022.

Comprehensive Care for Women

Committed Caregivers for Our Community

At Baptist Health, we understand the impact of breast cancer on women and their families. With statistics revealing that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, we understand that time is of the essence, and waiting is not a good option. We believe timely education and preventative care are essential to empowering women and their families in fighting this devastating disease. To address this need, Baptist Health’s strong team of specialists is dedicated to giving comprehensive care, including imaging services and cancer genetic counseling. Our advanced imaging services utilize cutting-edge technology, allowing for early detection and effective treatment strategies. For women who receive the life-changing news that they have breast cancer, we offer nurse navigation services to guide them through their intense personal journeys of cancer care. Baptist Health has prioritized providing genetic counseling services to educate families because by understanding one’s genetic predisposition to cancer, individuals can make informed decisions and take proactive steps toward prevention. Annually, the Baptist Health Breast CenterLittle Rock, including our High-Risk Breast & Hereditary Cancer Clinic, cares for about 40,000 women and their families and has been serving patients for more than 20 years. We want to care for even more. Baptist Health Foundation has been seeking donations to strengthen our Baptist Health healing ministry’s lifesaving care and to support its expansion and renovation needs. We believe making more access available for our services is crucial to improving outcomes and winning the fight against cancer for the lives of Arkansans.

Baptist Health knows that building a strong and committed health care workforce is pivotal to the overall health and well-being of our state. We are devoted to developing dedicated professionals by providing scholarships to students at our Baptist Health College Little Rock. Our college has a strong history of preparing the next generation of nurses and health care professionals to provide the best care to Arkansans. Annually, the college educates more than 300 students, who complete the highest number of clinical hours in the state and receive hands-on instruction from a team of faculty, mentors, and advisors with master’s and doctorate degrees. We believe that everyone deserves access to exceptional health care services. Through generous financial gifts, Baptist Health Foundation is able to support students in their educational journeys, equipping them with the knowledge, training, and expertise needed to make a difference in the lives of patients and communities. By fostering a new generation of compassionate and skilled caregivers, we are taking an active role in meeting the growing demand for health care professionals in our state. The Foundation will continue striving to forge philanthropic partnerships to invest in cultivating committed caregivers. Our scholarships give students the opportunity to pursue their dreams by easing their financial burdens and enabling them to focus on their studies and clinical experiences. These vital donations can make all the difference in transforming the lives of Arkansans and shaping the health of our state.
