I would like to open by saying thank you to everybody who has contributed to bringing this magazine together. Advertisers, content contributors, those who have been a part of any of the events or competitions featured, you have all helped and enabled us to create this publication. I am going to keep this introduction short and sweet as I am not the type to make long rambling statements and I know that you would prefer to see what’s in the magazine rather than listen to me. So here’s a heads-up, firstly I would like to give a big shout-out to what I think was the best GOSH Décor Day so far (this was our 8th one) check out the great photos of the day on page 6/7. If you haven’t seen the video on BMTV, please take the time to watch as it is both inspiring and fabulous.
There are also articles on Risk Assessments for different industry sectors, copyright within our industry, step-by-step recipes for balloon décor, face painting and twisting, a review of the years photo competitions and a great article on an industry icon, Chris Horne who has been a fixture in this industry for more than 35 years. So, that’s enough from me but I will end by saying a big thank you to you all for your continued support, and we look forward to working with you throughout 2024 and beyond.
Best wishes to you all.

Amscan’s Head of Marketing Jen Wilson, caught up with Chris Horne, Head of Training and Education at Amscan UK, to share an insight into the industry veteran's career.
From Science teacher to Florist, and finally settling on the career of Balloon Professional for going on almost 40 years now, they discuss the ever-evolving landscape of our industry.
You’ve been part of our Amscan family for almost 20 years now. How have you seen the business develop over that time?
I’ve been part of the Amscan team for just over 19 years, holding various roles and remits, but always with a creative thread running through them. I’ve been fortunate enough to see the company grow through some major landmarks; International acquisitions, strategic enhancements and most recently the development and expansion of our state-ofthe-art distribution hub, under the Wonder umbrella. But above all, I’ve been able to work with some fantastic people who share the same passions and goals as I do.
How did you first step into the Balloon industry?
I first dabbled with balloons back in the 1980’s – I’m not sure it was quite an “industry” just then - where I began to incorporate balloons into my already successful floristry business. Mainly because I thought “this looks like it has potential”.
40 years on, I couldn’t be prouder that I had the courage and foresight (and sometimes the craziness as us balloon artists know only too well, let’s face it), to take the plunge on what was then a very new industry.
It certainly wasn’t easy though. Taking the time and committing the resources necessary, to learn everything I could and investigate every opportunity and new idea, was challenging and things got rocky occasionally, which I am certain many readers will also understand, but not giving up, powering on and sticking to those creative guns and principles, is what drove me forward; striving to be the best I could be.
And you certainly did become the best you could be, with plenty of competition titles to your bow, winning International Decorator of the year, International Designer of the year and International Trainer of the year multiple times over.
You’re right – although I don’t regularly talk about it so much – but when I think about all these achievements and reflect on these accolades, it’s really quite humbling.
I would say though, that having the opportunity to pass on the things I have learned to people, is also one of the greatest achievements there is. I have worked with some amazingly creative and supportive people over the years, both in the beginning of my career, throughout the balloon community, and the people I work with now.
I’m also grateful for the support of the business growing our Training and Education team, with people who share the same passion for the industry as I do. The introduction of Jacob to the team and working in conjunction with our Marketing and Design Team, has allowed us to enhance our opportunities and share our enthusiasm for teaching even further.
And also, I suppose one more recent achievement is both Jacob and yourself becoming our very own YouTube stars?
Indeed! This is the perfect example of continuously learning and evolving with both the industry and technology! These quite recent developments are still infant to many and being within a team of such imaginative and inspiring people in our workplace, and the wider celebrations community, is quite incredible.
I should do a plug here to our YouTube handle Amscan International :)
There have been so many changes in the balloon industry over the past 4 decades, however I certainly feel the momentum for change has swung significantly in the past 5 years.
As we have alluded to, the prominence of social media in the world, making it a much smaller place, allowing for trends, ideas and education to be exchanged within a second, right through to the sustainability requirements, it is so important to move in line with these demands. Being industry leaders at Amscan, it’s been a really exciting time; time for change and driving forwards on the journey.
We’ve worked together for a very long time now, and on projects all across the world, from Romford to Melbourne. What has been your favourite project to work on?
I really don’t think I could pick one if I am honest! There have been so many fantastic projects over the years which we have been involved with. From European retail development, Trade Shows and Exhibitions across the globe right from the early days in the US, through to the training of thousands of balloon artists – now- experts. It really does amaze me that my love for balloons has allowed me to be fortunate enough to travel to so many places, and meet so many people.
What are you favourite things about the medium of balloons?
The simplicity. That something as simple as a balloon can provide so many opportunities and so much joy. Creating smiles is certainly a career to be very fortunate to have!
And with that, and I know you’re not very good at choosing favourites, but out of the 82 shades in the Sempertex colour rainbow, which has to be your ultimate favourite?
My favourite shade has to be 976 Reflex Truffle. I love the matching foils too, which coordinate just perfectly.
And do you have a favourite technique at all?
Favourite technique? I have almost 40 year's experience, and am still learning something every day. How can I choose?
Yourself and Jacob always provide our customers and followers with hints and tips. What is your most valuable tip you could share with the readers?
® ® ®
Most valuable tip - plan and prepare thoroughly. Get everything that can be done in advance, done - so you avoid nasty surprises on site - and get home in time for tea!
In addition to this, always remember that there really is no limit to the creative potential of a balloon and a balloon artist! Dream and try. Try the idea, try the colour combination, try the mega installation, try the simple yet effective deliverable balloons. And if it doesn’t work how you wanted, try again. No one will ever know how many attempts it took to get that just how you imagined. What’s more, the learning and stumbling of balloon magic you may find during the journey, is half the reward! - Also don’t forget, you can always find plenty of tips on the Amscan Decorator Hub!
If you could change one thing about the party industry, what would it be and why?
I would love more people to have the courage of their own convictions, trust their own ability, and stop worrying about what other people are doing, or charging… or saying.
And final question; If you didn’t work in the party industry, what industry would you work in and why?
Probably horticulture. I love my garden and it's my go to place if things get a bit stressy!
If you’re interested in learning more tips, tricks and creative ideas from the Amscan team, follow them on Instagram @amscanuk or check out their YouTube channel Amscan International!
Copyright infringement is a prevalent issue in the balloon and party industry. While some designs featuring popular characters from franchises are legal with the proper licenses, many are not, which raises serious legal concerns.
As a business owner, it is your duty to understand and adhere to the laws regulating your business. Failure to comply with regulations could have serious consequences for both your business and personal life.
Copyright is the legal right to an intellectual property owner to restrict duplication.
A trademark is a brand's identity, including names, logos, slogans, and other distinctive features. Using someone else's work or brand for commercial purposes without authorisation is theft and violates their copyright or trademark.
Online marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and Alibaba offer a wide range of low-priced goods, but be aware, many of them are counterfeit, and fail to meet CE standards. Purchasing from trustworthy suppliers and wholesalers is essential to avoid legal and safety risks associated with counterfeit products.
Football logos are protected by copyright laws. To duplicate a football logo, you need permission from the copyright holder, usually the football club or organisation. Unauthorised use could result in legal consequences for copyright infringement.
The Risks Involved with Using Copyrighted Designs
Vinyl cutting machines have been instrumental in the rise of personalised and themed balloons. However, it's essential to remember that owning one doesn't give you the right to use logos, fonts, and characters owned by other businesses, even if requested by customers when no licensed balloon alternatives are available.
Purchasing cut files from individuals who break the law is also prohibited. Vinyl cutting machine owners must be aware of the risks involved with breaking this law.
Copyright and Trademark Laws for Popular TV Cartoon

Characters Characters
Cartoon characters are considered artistic works, which means they are protected by copyright laws. This protection extends even to obscure characters. As a result, they are not considered public property. Anyone who creates balloon models of popular TV characters and sells them without permission from the copyright holder risks committing copyright infringement. It's important to keep in mind that characters that are protected by copyright or trademark laws cannot be used for commercial purposes without obtaining proper authorisation from the rights holder. This applies to creating balloon versions of these characters for profit, promotional events, or any other commercial ventures.

Using your sponge apply the beige colour, avoiding the eye and the hollow of the cheek
With a lighter hand add a small amount of black to the temple, nose, chin and underthe cheekbone
Apply the white to the areas shown, these are the high points on the face
Using your brush add in the linework, varying the thickness of the lines, dont forget the cracks!
Using the sponge again or a brush if you prefer apply the black to the eye and hollow of the cheek.
With your brush use the beige to paint in the teeth. Add a small Y shape to the bottom teeth and an upside down Y to the top teeth
Paint in a highlight on each tooth with white. Outline the teeth with black and add a tiny teardrop in between each Y shape. Highlight with white the cracks, the Y shapes, around the inside of the hollow in the jaw bone and along the lower eye. Anywhere where the light would hit naturally.
