BEER IS BREWING

AT BASEMENT BREWHOUSE Our unique new dining destination has impressed in its first few weeks in operation, with a huge range of craft beers tantalising the tastebuds of even the most seasoned drinkers. The Basement Brewhouse opened its doors in spectacular fashion on Melbourne Cup Day with over a thousand people walking through the doors to have a look at the venue, and to try our delicious burgers and gourmet cheeses and cured meats from the delicatessen. We sold over 500 pints on opening day with our in-house Basement Brewhouse beers are proving extremely popular, with the #4 Sparkling Ale the hottest item on tap. Plenty of people are already enquiring about booking tables for lunch, dinner and private functions and overall, the feedback we’ve received has been extremely positive. People are loving it! American-style Pale Ale to launch the new microbrewery. We wanted to find the right balance of flavours to give our customers a few different options to choose from, and we had to choose flavours that would appeal to a broad audience. As the Brewhouse is an entirely new concept for the Bankstown area, we knew introducing craft and boutique styles would take a little bit of getting used to. We will be rotating our beverages tank-by-tank, and on-demand. If our patrons love a particular style or flavour, we will take their feedback onboard and brew accordingly. We will also be aiming to change brews seasonally, introducing lighter styles in the warmer months and darker, richer offerings for the cooler months. BURGERS & DELI Our burgers have been extremely popular since we opened, with the Mighty Brewhouse becoming our early best seller, as well as our signature Reuben sandwich. The sliders have been great too with people wanting to try a selection of our offerings.

The garbage fries, loaded with pulled pork, sweet corn, shallots, crispy bacon, American cheesy sauce and picco de galo are a great option for sharing, as well as the meat and cheese boards which are also proving to be a hit. CATERING FOR EVERYONE The Brewhouse really is a destination with something for everyone. There’s open-plan dining and lounge seating for those who want to relax, booth-style seating for casual get-togethers and secluded spots for an intimate drink .

men. There will also be cocktails and wine on tap available for those with a sweeter palate, or anyone wanting to finish their visit on a lighter note. MERCHANDISE We have stubby holders, bottle openers, mens and ladie’s t-shirts and trucker hats for sale, and staff get a discounted rate when they swipe their staff card. See page 7 for details.

Our private rooms can accommodate both large and small functions and parties, with flexible set up arrangements and great catering options. And don’t think the Brewhouse is just for the boys! We are serving a wide variety of beers and ciders that we feel appeal to women, just as much as

STAFF SOFT OPENING

AT BASEMENT BREWHOUSE Our Brewhouse Staff Night on Monday, 31 October was a big success, with over 450 staff, their friends and families coming to the new venue for a burger and a craft beer. After months of preparation, the brewhouse team were ready for a busy night, armed with knowledge and advice on all things craft-beer related. The majority of guests chose to sample our in-house Basement Brewhouse range of beers, with our Sparkling Ale the most popular drop of the night, while the Reuben Sandwich and the Mighty Brewhouse were the top picks from the burger bar. The kitchen was flat out all night with over 450 burgers and Reuben’s made in only 4 hours. That’s almost one burger every 30 seconds! Overall, we received very positive feedback about the venue as well as the craft beers and our staff, and we’re taking some constructive comments on board about our burger range. With any new venue there will always be teething problems, but management is extremely happy with the way the event was run and the official launch the following day.

Peking Square, the newest dining precinct inside Bankstown Sports Club, will change the way you think about Asian dining. With so many offerings in the one place, you are guaranteed to find something to tempt you, whether it’s our yum cha, made fresh on-site, or something from our a-lacarte menu or Peking duck oven. Our menus have been specially formulated with a focus on Asian fusion and authentic chinese street food, and our Signature 8 specialty menu illustrates exactly that. We begin with the Peking Square BBQ Trio; a tasting plate of crispy-skin duck, soya marinated chicken and honey-glazed pork. If you enjoy lamb, Hong Kong’s Typhoon Shelter-style cutlets are the perfect choice, or perhaps the sautéed diced Wagyu beef tossed with cashews and spicy Kung Po essence is more your style? The Pork spare ribs in Three Cup sauce are tender and juicy and have been tossed with basil, chilli and fried ginger, and then there are our seafood options which include lightly battered squid rolls, Singaporean-style Lobster tail and deep fried whole snapper. The final dish on our Signature 8 is the Buddha’s Vegetarian Delight. The Peking Square a-la-carte menu features a wide variety of dishes, incorporating a range of different flavours, themes and cooking styles. There will be a set seafood offering including favourites such as soft-shell crab, satay king prawns, baby octopus and scallops, as well as a weekly market offering which will be subject to supply, but will potentially include lobster, mud crab, pippies and freshwater barramundi. The chicken and meat dishes incorporate traditional Chinese, with offerings such as crispy skinned chicken, Kung Po chicken with cashews, beef in black bean sauce and Peking style

shredded beef, with a splash of modern creativity in the Little India curried chicken, beef with Wasabi and salt and pepper pork ribs. Our in-house Peking duck oven will produce juicy and succulent duck on-demand, for duck pancakes duck sang choy bow, Peking Square sliders, duck spring rolls and crispy-skinned duck in sweet plum sauce. There will also be a range of sizzle iron plate dishes, as well as clay and stone hot pot items, and of course, the signature Peking Square Conpoy fried rice heads up our rice and noodle menu. And if you’re up for sampling a few different flavours, Peking Square also has a special Degustation 8 menu incorporating a variety of Peking duck dishes, including bruschetta, pancakes, Japanese Udon and shredded duck. As well as the a-la-carte menu, Peking Square will have a yum cha service available where patrons will be able to order dumplings and noodles which will be made fresh by our in-house chefs. Our open-plan kitchen allows you to watch as your meals are created from scratch, before being delivered to your table. You will have access to our Chinese tea house situated in the middle of the square, which will serve a range of traditional herbal teas. Peking Square is scheduled to open its doors in December and will take both bookings and walkin’s. It will operate 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. There will be a staff soft opening for Peking Square in the coming weeks. Keep an eye on your emails and Facebook for details.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO Mark Condi, Chief Executive Officer

I would like to begin by thanking all staff for their patience over the last few months while construction of the new Brewhouse and Peking Square has taken place. The building works have been extremely noisy at times and I appreciate this has often made your jobs quite difficult when looking after customers. Please be assured, the builders are working as hard as they can to complete our new venues, and I’m confident all employees, members and patrons will thoroughly enjoy the additions to our club.

10 | Staff News

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE We are in the final stages of construction for the new Peking Square precinct, which will offer an authentic Asian dining experience with yum cha and a-la-carte menu offerings, as well as our own Peking duck oven and a traditional Chinese tea house. The open-plan setting can accommodate almost 300 seats, while our four private dining rooms will cater for large and small functions and events. The

design is an extension of the authentic street scene inside Lucky Cheng’s, and the open kitchen will allow patrons to watch our talented noodle and dumpling chefs make your dishes to order. With Imperial Jade closes later this year to make way for a new Steakhouse, Peking Square will cater for all those wanting a traditional Asian dining fusion experience inside the club. GREENACRE AMALGAMATION Our plans to merge with Greenacre Bowling and Recreation Club are moving forward, with the state government approving the amalgamation, in principle. The Greenacre venue has been in financial decline over the past couple of years, due to reduced patronage and member numbers, so Bankstown Sports has stepped in to help. We are planning to upgrade all services and facilities, replace all carpets and furniture throughout the building, and modernise and refresh the gaming area. There will also be a significant overhaul of the outdoor space, with a new kids play area and a 208-seat restaurant and bar. The bistro menu has also been updated with a range of delicious new dishes and specials, serving a basic modern-Australian offering with some pub-style share food, steak, schnitzels and a $12 kids meal. We will also be introducing a few craft beers and boutique wines to our beverage menus. Some of the renovations are already underway in the gaming area, with the bar and restaurant next up on the to-do list. All construction works being carried out are in the best interests of Greenacre Bowls and its members, and Bankstown Sports is looking forward to this new partnership. BANKSTOWN SPORTS JOINS FORCES WITH NSW POLICE Bankstown Sports Club is very proud to have partnered up with NSW Police to raise awareness about a new anti-domestic violence campaign called ‘It’s not your fault”. We’re among a group of several clubs in Sydney’s west and south west to join the fight against domestic violence, to remind people that there is no excuse for it.

involvement has included showing a 30-second public service announcement in The Theatre before movie screenings, as well as print and digital media displays around the club. We understand we have the opportunity to spread this message to thousands of people in our community. Police respond to more than 140,000 incidents of domestic and family violence every year, which is about 380 cases every day, so it is vitally important that we get right behind this initiative. LIKE IT, LOVE IT, RATE IT! The results are in from our Staff Engagement Survey and I would like to thank everyone for getting involved this year. We had a response rate of 85 per cent this time around, which is a huge increase on last year’s participation. You will find a breakdown of the results across the following pages. Thank you for your honest feedback and we look forward to improving on these figures even further next year. WE ARE NOW FREE-RANGE! I am pleased to confirm Bankstown Sports is now using free-range eggs in all of its restaurants. We will be sourcing our eggs from Sunny Queen Farms in Queensland, which is an Australian-owned company which has passed the CHOICE free-range Model Code. More and more people are choosing to buy free-range eggs, and by sourcing our produce in a responsible manner, it means we have an opportunity to improve animal welfare and meet the expectations of our customers. AND FINALLY… I would like to wish all staff a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! This time of year is always busy for the club and the board of directors and I appreciate you working so hard to look after our customers. We sincerely hope you are able to spend some quality time with family and friends, and we look forward to seeing you all in 2017! You are able to pick up your christmas gift from the admin reception desk or your venue manager.

The campaign was launched in February this year, to raise public awareness by reminding people there is no excuse for domestic and family violence, and that it is never the victim’s fault. Our

SPORTS & COMMUNITY MEET THE TEAM

The Sport and Community team at Bankstown Sports Club manages the relationships and support provided to our 42 associated sporting clubs. It also looks after ClubGRANTS, acts as the liaison between the club and the many community service organisations we support, and coordinates staff volunteering and staff wellness. The team is relatively new (since December 2015) though some of its functions have previously existed under a different structure. The team was created to bring our sports administration function together with ClubGRANTS and community development, with the added focus of staff wellness. We have quite a few long-standing relationships with community organisations such as Bankstown City Aged Care, Lidcombe-Bankstown Hospital, Chester Hill Neighbourhood Centre, Coolaburoo Neighbourhood Centre, Bankstown Meals on Wheels, Bankstown Public School and Bankstown Girls High School.

16 | Staff News

In the past year we have supported some great local projects such as: • • • • •

RESPECT (Primary school boys say no to domestic violence) STARS – Out of school adventure experiences for marginalised young men Velma’s Pet Therapy – Rescue animals as companions for the elderly Bankstown Men’s Shed Midnight Basketball and Twilight Soccer programs.

GET TO KNOW THE TEAM MARIE KANAAN Sport and Community Department Manager JOSH CARMICHAEL Sporting Clubs Manager SHANNON HARLEY Community Coordinator

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT? Marie: I oversee the direction of the department. As part of the management team, it’s my role to ensure our department is operating within the strategic direction of the club. Josh: I am responsible for the Sports Club’s relationship with our 40+ associated sporting clubs in Bankstown, Birrong and Baulkham Hills. A big part of my role is in promoting best practice governance across these associated sporting clubs. Shannon: I liaise with local community organisations and take part in the local ClubGRANTS Committee. I review all non-sport community requests that are received by our venues and prepare recommendations for the Board. I also take care of all staff community events. WHAT DO YOUR DAILY TASKS INVOLVE? Marie: Liaising with internal and external stakeholders, planning and reporting meetings, attending community events, preparing plans and reports. Josh: Correspondence with sporting club delegates, constitution/policy writing, responding to funding requests and social media strategy. Right now I’m in the middle of overhauling the sporting clubs’ presence on the Club website. Shannon: Everything from corresponding with community organisations to fulfilling their requests. A typical day may also include carrying out research or something as random as being asked to play dominoes with an elderly couple from Greenacre. WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE YOU JOINED THE SPORT AND COMMUNITY DEPARTMENT? Marie: I was a Sponsorship and Marketing Manager for 6 months at the Australian Defence Credit Union immediately before joining Bankstown Sports. Prior to that, I worked in advertising as an Account Director for 6 years, and before that I held sports marketing and sport administration roles. Josh: For the last 14 years I was pastoring at a multiethnic Baptist Church in Chester Hill which has grown to five distinct congregations of about 250 people in total. I was heavily involved in the local community in schools-based work, at the Villawood immigration detention centre, as well as doing advocacy work for new arrivals to our country, hopefully helping them to find their fit in this great country. Shannon: I started with the club in 2012 working as part of the Treasury and Clearance Team in the early mornings. I could also be often spotted on tray service or as a host on the gaming floor. I applied for

this job when it became available as I love working with staff and the community. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? Marie: I find the sun! Play basketball, go for a swim, catch up with friends and enjoy some down time. Josh: Dote over my 18-month old daughter Eden, go to church, go to the gym, hang with my wife Jen, read a good book, watch a good movie, watch live sport. Shannon: I go on quick little getaways (or 9 week holidays!) whenever I can, see friends and family and as soon as it is warm enough (or sunny enough) I head to the ocean. I spend a lot of time in the Royal National Park in spring and summer. WHEN YOU WERE LITTLE, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? Marie: I wanted to be my mum. However, by the time I was a teenager I wanted to be a PE teacher or a full-time basketball player. Josh: I was convinced I’d be a professional cricketer or soccer player. Shannon: I had to ask mum about this one and she said I wanted to be a nurse, a choreographer, a counsellor, a detective, a farmer and the Prime Minister. There is still time to at least attempt a few of these! FAVOURITE FOOD TO EAT AT THE CLUB? Marie: #A14 at Lucky Cheng’s Josh: Anything Shannon: The potato pizza at La Piazza – yum! Or just avocado at the cafe. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER TO DATE? Marie: Returning to Bankstown (the area I grew up in) to do work that’s sport and community focused. Josh: Leading small groups of young adults from the church on several cross-cultural exchange trips to serve among the Indigenous people of Newman, WA, as well as overseas amongst local churches and tribes of people in Malawi and Zimbabwe in southern Africa. Shannon: Meeting Archie the Elder Clown at Bankstown City Aged Care. Archie visits residents living with dementia and sings and performs to them which enables them to ‘come out of their shell’ a little bit. He spreads some sunshine in their lives, and it was amazing to watch! Staff News | 17

Healthy Eating Tips by Emma Duxbury

When I joined the Bankstown Sports team in April this year, I had no idea what I was in for. I thought - Great! New job, new people, new environment. I’ll pack my lunches and take healthy snacks every day and I’ll totally be able to stay fit and healthy! But I was completely unaware and totally unprepared for the daily temptation I would be faced with… I’m usually happy to admit I’ve been caught up in the clean-eating, everything-must-be-lean-and-green phase that Australia, and the world, seems to be in at the moment. I hit the gym every day and generally watch everything I eat. Yes – I’m one of THOSE people. But when there is tempting, delicious food in every corner of the club, it’s so hard to say no! I did sample some of the incredible meals and don’t get me wrong - I loved every mouthful. But I also realised there are plenty of healthy options available as well. Here are the best options for you… INTOUCH CAFÉ & GREENFIELD STATION BISTRO The salad and sandwich bar at the café is probably the quickest and easiest option for a healthy meal. Fresh ingredients and different combinations of meat, salad and condiments will keep things interesting at every meal, which means you are more likely to actually enjoy your food and stick to healthy habits. 18 | Staff News

The Roast of the Day or the daily stir-fry special with boiled rice from the bistro are great choices if you feel like something warm. The salads are also a smart choice and there are some very tasty flavours! GRILLED IS GOOD! Meats that have been grilled are the way to go if you want to watch the waistline. Try and avoid anything fried or battered, and keep the sauce on the side! Just because something isn’t deep-fried or covered in sauce, doesn’t mean it won’t taste good. KEEP THE SAUCE ON THE SIDE… A lot of meals on a lot of our menus are healthy in themselves, but rich, creamy sauces increase the calorie count. If you want a lighter option, ask for the sauce or dressing on the side, and simply limit the amount you have. Alternatively, you can ask for no sauce at all. SWAP CHIPS FOR SALAD OR VEGGIES Substituting chips for extra salad is a great way to keep your lunch or dinner healthy. Our restaurants are more than happy to swap them out for you if you request it when you order. ONLY EAT WHAT YOU NEED Portion size is also a big factor in maintaining healthy eating habits. Take the half-portion option at places like Lucky Cheng’s to make sure you aren’t overindulging. Eat to fuel your body – not to reach food coma status!

LET THEM RUN FREE!

BANKSTOWN SPORTS CLUB HAS COMMITTED TO USING FREE-RANGE EGGS IN ALL OF ITS RESTAURANTS. The roll-out has included Greenfield Station Bistro, InTouch Café, Platform One, La Piazza, Lucky Cheng’s, Imperial Jade and the new Basement Brewhouse. Our restaurants at Baulkham Hills Sports and Bankstown Bowls have also introduced free-range eggs. We have sourced our eggs from Sunny Queen Farms in Queensland, an Australian-owned company which has passed the CHOICE free range Model Code, meaning there is a maximum of 1500 hens per hectare on their farms. According to data from consumer group CHOICE, 65% of Australians have opted to buy free-range eggs in the past twelve months, and Bankstown Sports CEO, Mark Condi, acknowledges the importance of this trend in society.

“More and more people are choosing to buy free-range eggs, and by sourcing our produce in a responsible manner, it means we have an opportunity to improve animal welfare and meet the expectations of our customers. “Switching to free-range is actually going to increase our costs, but we believe our new stock will be of a higher quality and better taste, and are a more natural option”. STAFFROOM BATHROOMS

Exceptional Customer Service

Construction of the new toilets and changerooms in the staffroom is underway!

After a slight delay, due to the launch of the Basement Brewhouse, the hoarding has gone up and building crews have been busy demolishing the old facilities to make way for brand new bathrooms for employees to enjoy. They will be styled in a similar way to the new Brewhouse facilities, with black benchtops, grey and white tiling and large mirrors to make the area look nice and spacious, with a crisp, clean feel. There will also be a state-of-the-art hand wash and dry system in place. Construction is due to take a couple of months and if all goes to plan, the new bathrooms should be open for operation by the end of the year. This project is part of our ongoing commitment to our staff to provide a happy, healthy and enjoyable environment for our employees to work and relax in. Our theory is, if staff love coming to work and enjoy their time at the club, they will in turn provide a much better customer service experience for our members and patrons.

POWERWALL The Powerwall is now complete and features all the information you need to know about current job vacancies, training courses, employee benefits and recognition, as well as the EAP and Chaplaincy service. There is also a section for you to give us your feedback and make suggestions for ways we can improve the club. You may have also noticed the two magnetic boards near the centre of the wall. Please feel free to bring in and hang up your photos from staff events or social activities with work colleagues. STAFF ART WALL If you’re a budding artist, why not show off your talents! We are creating a staff art wall in the internal corridor leading to the staffroom, where we will be showcasing paintings and drawings by our employees. If you would like to get involved, please contact Human Resources.

We want our members and patrons to have a good experience from the moment they walk into one of our clubs, until the time they leave. We want them to remember the outstanding customer service we provided, or the exceptional steak in the bistro, or the enjoyable evening they had at one of our shows with their loved ones.

We are naturally social creatures and forming positive relationships with our colleagues, members and patrons creates a much happier and more productive environment to work in. Some of the key factors in a good relationship are trust, effective communication, diversity and mutual respect. Bankstown Sports and its associated venues pride themselves on maintaining a happy and healthy workplace, where staff are able to focus on opportunities, rather than negativity.

Values Core Our

The hospitality industry is huge and there are plenty of other pubs and clubs out there coming up with new ways to entice our members and patrons. So, what can we do to make us stand out from the rest?

We strive to provide the highest level of customer service every time a member or patron walks through our door. From the moment they enter the foyer, to the time they leave, we should be providing them with a memorable and positive experience.

Feedback from our members, patrons and staff is what drives our business forward. It is essential to not only know what we’re doing well as a club, but also the areas we need to improve on. This is why we conduct our Member Survey and our Staff Engagement Survey, while also providing feedback forms for our customers at reception.

GOING GREEN At Bankstown Sports we strive to minimise the impact of our operations on our planet, and sustainability is embedded across everything we do. Our staff are our biggest resource and we are always looking for innovative solutions that enable Bankstown to be more efficient; do more, with less. It has been a big year for the club and we are proud of what we have achieved and also excited with the challenges we have set out for next year. In 2016 we have been able to: • Divert recyclables and food waste from landfill • Compost food waste onsite • Decrease energy and water consumption with a new chiller • Install solar panels on the roof at Baulkham Hills • Replace lighting in the car park and gaming area with LED • Save a large percentage of CO2 from being released to our atmosphere Our plans for 2017: • • •

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle: increase our recycling rates and decrease the amount of waste sent to landfill by 10% Better energy efficiency and lower water consumption: decrease our water and energy usage by 10% Promote, Engage and Change: coordinate

sustainability activities to engage patrons and staff (Cleanup Australia Day, Earth Day, National Recycling Week) Communicate: ensure we communicate our learning and achievements with you on a regular basis via this space.

What can you do? Here are 4 things we can all do right now to contribute to a more sustainable future: 1. Be part of the solution, not the problem – take quicker showers, re-use and recycle, ride a bike, start a veggie garden. Consider the impact of your actions on our planet. 2. Be a responsible citizen - individual actions make a big difference 3. Spread the word – information is power. Talk about sustainability with family, friends and coworkers, and encourage action. 4. Be a driver for change - make a difference in your local community, household, school and workplace. Remember - small changes make a big difference and we only have one planet! If you have a suggestion let us know at HR@BankstownSports.com

Mystery Shopper Wrap-up We are pleased to report some very positive feedback from our Mystery Shoppers this year, with scores of 89+ for every month across all of our venues. At Bankstown Sports, we had shoppers visit four times each month to rank us on their experiences and then give us a score out of 100. At Baulkham Hills, Birrong and Bankstown Bowls, mystery shoppers visited once every three months and used the same ranking system. The following staff members have been recognised by Mystery Shoppers for ‘Superior customer service’ in 2016 as part of our rewards and recongition program.

A MESSAGE FROM THE GM Andrew Kelly, General Manager

There’s been a lot happening at the club over the past few months, especially regarding the renovation work taking place in the staffroom, and I would like to thank you for your patience and continued hard work during this time. STAFFROOM I’m really excited about the construction upgrades happening in the staffroom and what the improvements will mean for all employees. We wanted to create a more modern, useful and enjoyable environment for our staff to use while on their break, or before or after their shift, and to give you a space with a good atmosphere and up-to-date facilities. The first phase of the renovations has seen brand new toilet and change room facilities installed and fitted out in the same style as the new Brewhouse, with a modern-industrial feel. We felt it was important to provide the same experience back-of-house, as our members and patrons enjoy. We want all of you to be proud of where you work and to enjoy your time at the club. The Powerwall is also now complete with brand new finger scan terminals, and all the latest information on training, job vacancies and staff activities. I encourage all of you to use the Feedback Box to tell us what you think of the changes, and to make suggestions on ways we can improve as a club, in the future. 26 | Staff News

ENGAGEMENT SURVEY Thank you to all staff who took park in this year’s Engagement Survey. We exceeded expectations for the level of completion which was 85 per cent. Our staff engagement rating improved too, from 48 last year to 54, which is a really good result. Nicholas Howlin, our HR manager and myself will be sharing the results of this survey with all staff over the coming months, by way of small meeting groups. This will also be a great time for you to share feedback and ask questions. Bankstown Sports Club is committed to providing a happy, healthy and safe environment for all employees and we will continue to work on strategies to improve our staff satisfaction. We want all of you to enjoy your work here, and I encourage you to give us your feedback if you feel there is something we could improve on. The Staff Engagement Team meets monthly to discuss potential problems and ways to overcome those issues. If you are interested in joining, please speak to Human Resources. SAVOUR AWARDS 2016 I would like to congratulate Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer and our Beverage team on their success at the 2016 NSW Savour Australia Restaurant and Catering Awards for Excellence. Greenfield Station Bistro won Best restaurant in the Family Dining, Sydney Metropolitan category and Atrium Bar took out Best Small Bar, recognising their

outstanding achievements in the food and beverage industry over the past year. Bankstown Sports also had several other restaurants named as finalists, including Platform One, Lucky Cheng’s, Stuzzichino and Pizzeria Bellucci. TOUCH FOOTBALL DAY A big thank you to the Bankstown Sports employees and their families who took part in the Salvation Army’s annual Touch Football Gala Day, held at Bexley North in October. Congratulations to our mixed and men’s teams who both came third in their respective divisions, especially when neither team trained in the lead up to the event! I was pleased to hear that everyone got a run on the field, regardless of ability, and that the level of comradery and support for one another was outstanding. You all contributed to raising funds and awareness for the Salvation Army and the generous work they do. Well done.

STAFF APPRECIATION NIGHT Please keep Monday, 16 January 2017 free… it’s Staff Appreciation Night! We will be holding it at Bankstown Bowls Club, which will be closed to patrons on the night. We have an exciting line up of live entertainment and our catering and beverage departments are going all out to provide a great experience. It would be great to see you all there. It’s been a big year and the board of directors and management would like a chance to thank you for all of your hard work. AND FINALLY… I hope everyone has a very happy Christmas and New Year period, and that all of you are able to spend time with family and friends. You are all valued members of the Bankstown Sports team and 2016 would not have been as successful as it has been, without you. I look forward to another prosperous year in 2017.

2016

Savour Awards Bankstown Sports Club prides itself on offering a wide variety of premium dining options for our members and patrons, and we are proud to have had two of our venues recognised for their outstanding achievements in the food and beverage industry over the past year. Greenfield Station Bistro and Atrium Bar received top honours at the 2016 NSW Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Awards for Excellence. The Bistro won the Family Dining category in the Sydney Metropolitan area, beating out Penshurst Cottage Italian Seafood, Queens Park Shed and The Traditional Chip Shop at Bondi Junction. Executive Chef Helmut Gundendorfer was on hand to accept the award at Luna Park’s Big Top. “We came close in the same category last year and we were up against some very tough competition this year. Each restaurant in our group is very popular, and I’m thrilled that we actually won!” 30 | Staff News

Atrium Bar took out the Small Bar category for the second year in a row, and Beverage Manager Gareth Heard, says it’s great to be recognised at such a prestigious event. “These awards are one of the highlights of the year in the food and beverage industry. The best of the best come together to celebrate each other’s achievements, and it’s a real honour to have Atrium Bar be given a mention”. Bankstown Sports Club had several other restaurants named as finalists, including Platform One, Lucky Cheng’s, Stuzzichino and Pizzeria Bellucci.

Preliminary works are underway on the new nine-storey commercial office tower on the corner of Restwell Street and Greenfield Parade, which will provide state-of-the-art office space with the highest environmental standards, and will accommodate all of the club’s administration offices. Bankstown Sports Club will occupy one floor of the building for admin offices and staff facilities, with full access to a private outdoor dining and leisure area. The remaining floors will be leased out to tenants, with several companies in the health & fitness, childcare and education industries already showing interest in the space.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

ROSTERING The Bankstown Sports rostering team deal with more than 500 staff on a weekly basis, and are constantly working to meet the changing needs of our business. There are plenty of misconceptions about what the team actually does, so here is how a typical day unfolds for a member of the rostering team. Joanne Hall - Roster Coordinator Demetrius Kirisome - Roster Coordinator Maati El Hafiane - Roster Coordinator START THE DAY WITH SICKIES! We usually get in around 8am and start by going through all the emails from the night before to see if any new sick leave applications have come through. We then work out which shifts need to be covered first; some of these are 8am or 10am starts, so we have to find replacement staff urgently. RE-ROSTERING The next few hours are spent moving staff around to try and cover the gaps in the roster due to sickies, and once we’ve done all we can with the employees already on shift, we start calling people to see if they can come in on their day off, start their shift early or stay back late. This can get a bit tricky when you have to factor in maximum working hours for the week and whether staff are trained in the areas you need to fill.

32 | Staff News

COMMUNICATION We then have to communicate everything to the Duty Managers and Team leaders to let them know about the changes, and make sure everything is recorded on the roster. LEAVE REQUESTS AND SHIFT SWAPS Once all that is sorted, we then go through our leave request forms, shift swaps and annual leave and approve as many of them as we can. And most days we also plan, or start creating the next roster. WELFARE CHECKS Welfare checks are another part of our job. If an employee calls in sick, we will give them a follow up phone call to make sure they are OK and to find out if they are going to need any more time off, or if there is anything the club can do to help. TRAINING Once all of the urgent jobs are done, we also create training schedules for new employees before they start, so they get their roster before commencing their employment at the club. We work closely with HR for this, and we speak with department heads about potential staff members for upcoming training courses. On top of all of this, the team helps out with inductions, attends meetings and takes part in club activities. We also review the roster to match the daily business requirements.

DANIEL SAMSA BOCCE CHAMPION Daniel Samsa has been working at Bankstown Sports Club since December 2014 as part of our bar and tray service team, but what a lot of his colleagues, and our members and patrons may not know, is that the 20-year-old is the current Under 23’s World Bocce Champion, and that in December 2016, he travelled overseas to Monaco to defend his title. Bocce is a ball sport developed in Italy, which closely resembles our game of lawn bowls in Australia. It is traditionally played on natural soil and asphalt courts with metal or plastic balls, and the aim is to get your team as close to the ‘jack’ as possible.

Daniel was introduced to the game by his grandparents in Slovenia 7 years ago, and he has played ever since. He started out with social games before getting involved in competitions, and before long he was competing overseas for world titles. When he is not representing Australia internationally, Daniel mentors and coached junior players in the Liverpool area, and also travels around local schools, teaching the kids about the sport of Bocce. Bankstown Sports would like to congratulate Daniel on his achievements and we wish him all the best for his future endeavours in the sport.

Bankstown Sports Club’s plans to amalgamate with Greenacre Bowling and Recreation Club are moving forward, with the state government approving the merger, in principal. The Greenacre venue has been in financial decline over the past couple of years, due to reduced patronage and member numbers, so Bankstown Sports has stepped in to help. With the full support of both club boards, BSC is planning to upgrade all services and facilities, replace all carpets and furniture throughout the building, and modernise and refresh the gaming area. There will also be a significant overhaul of the outdoor space, with a new kids play area and a 208-seat outdoor restaurant and bar. The bistro menu has also just been updated with a range of delicious new dishes and specials, serving a basic modern-Australian offering with some pub-style share food, steak, schnitzels and a $12 kids meal. Future staff opportunities to work at Greenacre will be advertised as they become available. Please check the powerwall in the staffroom or your emails for details.

with Mark Condi As part of our commitment to training and upskilling staff at Bankstown Sports Club and its associated venues, CEO Mark Condi has initiated new Leadership Development sessions for employees who have been forecast for leadership positions within the business, giving them the chance to engage one-on-one with senior management. Our Communications Manager Emma Duxbury joined the first of these sessions… OK, let me set the scene for you. It’s 9am on a Friday. With coffee in hand, I walked over to the club’s boardroom where I had been invited to take part in an ‘engagement session’ with the boss. One by one, staff members from around the club filed in, and as we all sat around the large brown table and quietly discussed how our weeks had been, Mark Condi walked into the room dressed in a hard hat and high-vis vest, with a giant grin on his face. As the eyebrows of every single person in the room slowly raised, he excitedly announced we were all going on a behind-the-scenes walk around the club. He explained that he, and Human Resources had handpicked a group of us to spend a few hours getting to know him a little better. We all grabbed a hard-hat and headed out the door, where Mark began to explain what the session was all about. He gave us a brief history of the club’s operations and told us about all the plans to

redevelop different parts of the building. We then went ‘back-of-house’ and as we walked through back corridors and rooms some of us had never seen before, we began to grasp just how enormous the club really is. We got an exclusive look at the Basement Brewhouse and Peking Square construction sites and saw the new space for InTouch Café, before Mark took us out onto the concrete slab where the new Flinders Centre is being built and walked us through the plans. We finished the tour in the Rainforest Lounge where we were given an update on the bathrooms and Imperial Jade, and were encouraged to ask questions and give feedback about anything we were curious about. The two hours flew by and I can honestly say, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience! Mark is so enthusiastic about all of the upgrades and renovations taking place, and his excitement is infectious. If you’re asked to attend one of these ‘Engagement Sessions’, definitely make the effort to go along. You won’t be disappointed! For more information on Leadership Development sessions, please contact Human Resources.

Sick/Carers leave is from the same entitlement pool of 10 days for full time staff and pro rata for part time staff per year.

Salvation Army Touch Football Gala Day A group of our Bankstown Sports Club employees and their families got together on Sunday 8 October to take part in the Salvation Army’s annual Touch Football Gala Day, held at Bexley North. The event was made up of teams from different Salvo’s organisations across Sydney and NSW, and we were invited to take part through our club Chaplain, Shane Mount. We had three teams taking part, with our mixed and men’s teams both placing third in their respective divisions. Everyone was pretty pleased with their efforts, given there had been no training in the lead up and most participants aren’t football players!

Special mention must go to Tiep for firing up our teams, and to Matt Hunt, for wearing his lucky bucket hat in every game (which was very effective until we lost the semi-final!). The event was a fundraiser for Booth College and the Salvation Army, with bake stalls, markets and silent auctions. A really good day was had by all and everyone got a run on the field, regardless of ability. We even had a little cheer squad on the sidelines by the end of the day!

PAYNTER DIXON WINS AWARD FOR BANKSTOWN PROJECT Bankstown Sports Club would like to congratulate building company Paynter Dixon which has been recognised for the outstanding expansion of the Travelodge Hotel. They have been awarded an Excellence in Construction Award by the Master Builders Association, for the seamless extension of the existing building, which was completed with minimal disruption to club patrons. The MBA Awards are considered the most prestigious for the commercial building industry, with each project judged by a panel of industry experts. Entries are divided into price categories and cover the entire commercial contracting spectrum, ranging from the restoration of historic buildings to commercial, industrial, educational, retail and sporting facilities, as well as interior and shop fitouts. Paynter Dixon was recruited to build an additional two floors on the existing Travelodge Hotel, creating another 54 rooms. The work involved waterproofing our glass roof, soundproofing, relocation of major services, retaining lift services to the existing hotel and providing a tower crane to service our loading dock and material handling through the site. All requirements were carried out while approximately

38 | Staff News

5,500 visitors used the building on any given day, with both the club and hotel carrying out normal operations throughout construction. Bankstown Sports Club CEO Mark Condi says Paynter Dixon were professional from start to finish. “I would like to congratulate Paynter Dixon on their award, which is well deserved. The addition of the extra 4 floors of the Travelodge was a very difficult job, particularly when it was carried out while the hotel was fully operational and was surrounded by a large hospitality venue with a glass roof. Paynter Dixon understand the importance of continuing to trade and the limitation of noise and general disruption. It is often a delicate balance between building to get the job done and allowing us to trade or even sleep! Paynter Dixon have this balance down pat”. “We are extremely happy with the end result and Paynter Dixon have continued to work with the club on a number of projects including the recently opened Basement Brewhouse, the soon-to-be unveiled Peking Square and 10-storey office tower”.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF

I.T.

Ever wondered who comes to the rescue if the computers go down around the club? Or who the Duty Managers and Team Leaders call to fix the WiFi? The answer is…. I.T!!! We have three technology gurus working for Bankstown Sports and our associated venues. • • •

Brendan Stenner, I.T Manager Craig Wells, I.T Assistant Joseph Succar, I.T/AV Support Officer

What are some of the daily tasks your team undertakes? As soon as we arrive in the morning we check the enquiries that have arrived overnight and respond to as many as we can. We also review our system reports for any overnight changes to things like backup logs and our computer systems. And of course, we are then on standby throughout the day to respond to enquiries from each department, as issues arise.

What are some of the special projects you are currently working on? We are creating a new Point-of-Sale system for Peking Square, and we are in the middle of a massive network and WiFi upgrade for the club, which will improve our wireless capabilities significantly. We are also searching for a new brand of gaming floor tablet to make the service run a lot more efficiently, as well as implementing a new system for our Theatre ticket purchases. How many departments do you work with? All of them! Whether it’s a small computer issue or a large project being rolled out, our department is called upon every day. It’s never quiet, and no two days are ever the same.

ROB SHEHADIE Did you know Rob Shehadie used to be a first-grade rugby union player? He represented Australia/NSW at schoolboy, Under 19’s and Under 21’s levels. He also played for Lebanon in rugby league! But his sporting career was cut short due to injuries, and he was forced to look for something else to do. That’s when he turned to comedy. “While I was playing rugby and working, they were filming the first series of Fat Pizza. One of the actors from the show approached me and said they needed a big ethnic guy for a scene, and I thought yeah, I’ll give it a go. “I didn’t tell anyone cos I thought no one’s going to watch SBS and I didn’t want all the footy players to know I was acting. So I did it, and they liked me. They got me back for another scene in that series, which surprised me, but then it went to air. “I arrived at training the next day and all the boys were like ‘oh, were you on TV last night?’ Pizza had come on after South Park and everyone had been watching that. That’s how it all started and now here I am, 17 years later”.

and everyone can sit down and watch it and it’s got a multicultural feel to it. Anything multicultural in Australia seems to work very well”. The Bankstown Sports Club Staff Appreciation Night is happening on Monday, 16 January 2017 at Bankstown Bowls, and Rob is our headline entertainment act! He’s coming along to do a 30-minute stand-up set before DJ Danny B & The Hornstar, and he says he’s really looking forward to it. “Staff parties are always fun. Everyone is always looking for a good, fun night, and I’m sure there will be a good mix of different faces and nationalities, which will give me a lot of content! (Laughs) A lot of ammunition for the show! A bit of a heads up too; get your dancing shoes ready cos I’ll be getting a few people up for a dance”. Since then, it’s been a whirlwind couple of years for Rob, with his acting, stand-up comedy and MC roles, as well as stage and screen writing. He’s starred in SBS hits Fat Pizza and Housos, and was nominated for a TV WEEK LOGIE in the category of ‘Most Popular New Talent’ for his role in The Fat Pizza Movie. His most recent co-creation Here Come The Habibs has been a huge success, and Rob says he hopes his work can “bring a fresh comic perspective to multicultural Australia”. “I’m an entertainer, slash MC, slash comedian. In most environments, I can probably get a crowd going. I’ve got my set routine but I’ll often come out of that and I’ll look at the audience and decide who I can pick on, are there any look-a-likes, is someone talking or on their phone. There is always something you can get material from. I love improvisation and taking control of a room. “My comedy is very clean. Usually I don’t swear. I believe in keeping it clean cos you get a bigger audience. When Here Come The Habibs came out, it was very successful because it’s a clean family show 40 | Staff News

BANKSTOWN SPORTS

SERVICE TO SPORTS AWARDS Bankstown Sports Club has celebrated another year of remarkable sporting achievements on, and off the field, with its annual Service to Sport Awards dinner in The Grand Ballroom. Recently more than 200 members of the 42 sporting clubs gathered for a 3-course meal, to recognise the invaluable contribution our members and volunteers make to the local community. The Board of Directors and club CEO Mark Condi were all on-hand to help with the award presentations. Several club members also received special recognition for going above and beyond the call of duty. Bankstown Sports Little Athletics Club member Zach Facer received a signed GWS Giants jersey and scarf for his generous donation to the Little Wings charity in June. Instead of receiving gifts for his 10th birthday, he asked his friends and family to make a donation to the organisation, and was able to raise almost $2,000. We also recognised junior cricket club coaches Lachlan Hunt and Jason Gauci for their incredible dedication to the sport, and their club. Young Club Person of the Year went to Emma Newman from the Bankstown Sports Women’s Cricket Club. 42 | Staff News

Troy Freeman from the Bankstown Sports Strikers Football Club was named Volunteer of the Year, for generously donating his time and effort to serve his local community. There were three nominations for Club of the Year in 2016. The award went to the Strikers for their development of junior sport in their local community. They have also been exploring several charity opportunities and this year donated their former club uniform to two different orphanages in Vanuatu and Myanmar. And finally, several long serving members of Bankstown Sports and its associated venues were recognised for their years of service to the clubs. The Service to Sport Medal is our most prestigious accolade and is presented to members who have given 20+ years of service as a volunteer. There were four recipients this year, Victor Gauci, Terry Webb, Joe Collister and Bernie White. An engaging and entertaining night was had by all, with plenty of stories shared and great memories made. A special thanks to the staff who helped make the night so memorable for all!

Following the success of our first ever Degustation Dinner, we’re teaming up with another winery once again to bring you another fine dining experience in March. In recent months, we’ve noticed a lot of our patrons enjoy the finer dining options at The Gallery Restaurant, and often ask us about the best wine selections to suit their meals. This gave us the idea of hosting Degustation dinners, showcasing 5-courses of food which are paired with the ideal wines, to bring out the best flavours and textures. The first event, held on 20 October, featured a glass of sparkling pinot noir on arrival, followed by seared

scallops with a pernod butternut and pea puree for entrée, which was matched with a Flying Fish chardonnay. This was followed by fish, veal and pork dishes, accompanied by white, red and Vermentino blends. The evening finished with a Tajima beef brisket, coupled with a wild berry reserve cabernet, and all of this was just $75 per person. The next Degustation dinner will be held on 16 March in The Gallery Restaurant. For bookings, please contact the club on 9639 2100.

Christmas

Toy Drive

Bankstown Sports Bowls

Bankstown Bowls is holding its annual toy drive for the kids at the Children’s Hospital in Westmead and we want your help! Drop a toy to the club before 17 December and make a child smile this Christmas… Christmas is a time for giving, not just to our family and friends, but to those in the community who need our help. Bankstown Bowls is holding its annual toy drive again, collecting donations of gifts for the sick kids at the Children’s Hospital in Westmead. Last year, the club was able to collect almost 100 brand new toys which were taken to the hospital and handed out to the children. You should have seen the smiles on their faces! This year, we need your help! If you are able to contribute a gift for a sick child, please drop in a new, unused and unwrapped toy into the club before 17 December. The Bowls Club is also holding a ham raffle to raise money for the hospital. Last year, staff, members and patrons raised $5,000, and we are hoping to break that record this year! If you would like to help, please contact the club on 9790 0176 for raffle ticket information.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Bankstown Girls High School Bankstown Sports Club has provided $14,400 in funding for four academic and sporting scholarships, which will help students experiencing financial hardship.

might normally lack. In some situations, the girls have either one or both parents who do not work and the financial strain on the family is a burden which the scholarships help to ease”.

Bankstown Sports has again provided financial support to the Academic and Sporting Scholarship program at Bankstown Girls High School, which will give four students in years 7, 9 and 11 the opportunity to learn and fulfil their academic and sporting potential.

Mr Leary says scholarship recipients must submit an application which provides evidence that they are experiencing financial hardship or disadvantage. “The girls who receive the scholarships use them to enhance their potential to achieve academically. They relieve a lot of stress from the girls and their families by helping them purchase equipment to help them with their learning. Every girl who earns a scholarship uses the money wisely to enhance their education and take advantage of a number of opportunities”.

The club has been supporting the scheme since 2006, and over the 10 years it has provided over $140,000 in funding. The scholarships support students who are experiencing financial hardship, but who have academic and/or sporting potential which could be advanced with some financial assistance. Bankstown Girls High School principal Mark Leary says they are extremely grateful to the club for its support. “These scholarships are an important part of providing equity for some of our girls. Many of the girls have very complex family situations and the financial hardship aspect of the scholarship guidelines ensure that the scholarships go to girls who are in need of financial support.

Bankstown Sports CEO Mark Condi says the club is more than happy to help. “We are very proud to be able to provide these scholarships to students in our local community who need a bit of extra assistance. The students who benefit from this funding have already shown academic or sporting prowess and have a real passion for bettering themselves. Everyone has a right to a good education and if the club can help facilitate this in any way, we will”.

“Some of the girls come from very large families and this helps ensure they have access to resources they Staff News | 47
