Chairman’s Report

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT JOHN MURRAY, CHAIRMAN

As we celebrate the 50th edition of InTouch Magazine, there’s no better time to be a part of Bankstown Sports Club and our associated venues, as we continue to grow and develop our organisation into the ultimate dining and entertainment destination for all of our members and guests. WELCOME GREENACRE I would like to officially welcome The Acres Club to the Bankstown Sports Club family. This great venue at Greenacre has been around for 63 years and had a very dedicated board of directors and a loyal group of members. Renovations and upgrades to the facilities have already begun, and more details will be revealed over the coming pages of this magazine. We have big plans for this club and we’ve already had a very positive response to the changes we’ve made so far.

SHAVE FOR A CURE I would like to congratulate the members and staff at Birrong Sports Club after their incredible fundraising efforts for the Leukaemia Foundation earlier this year. On 26 March, they hosted a World’s Greatest Shave event and raised $10,000 to help people suffering from blood cancer. More than 30 people shaved, cut or coloured their hair for the cause. Thank you to everyone who donated to this great cause.

ANZAC DAY Our ANZAC Day Mixed Bowls Legacy fundraiser at Bankstown Bowls Club has been a huge success once again this year, and we managed to raise $4,720 for the widows and children of our Defence Force personnel who have been injured or killed while serving our country. On a beautiful Autumn day, the directors and I joined

WELFARE REPORT June, July and August 2017

some of our members and their guests for a day of reflection, some friendly games of lawn bowls and some lunch to raise money for a good cause. This was the 5th year the event has been held and in that time, it’s managed to raise more than $15,000 for Legacy Bankstown. Birrong Sports Club also held an ANZAC Day fundraiser on behalf of Legacy, to support their local Defence Force families. They enjoyed some casual games of bowls and some lunch, before holding a commemoration service under the flags as the Yagoona Brass Band played alongside. Thank you to everyone who came along to support this great event!

CLUBGRANTS Bankstown Sports has recently funded some very worthwhile initiatives through the ClubGRANTS scheme. A special sensory garden, designed specifically to meet the needs of dementia patients, has just been finished at Bankstown City Aged Care. It features an outdoor entertainment space, new trees and shrubs, and plenty of garden-based activities to keep patients occupied. The residents have been enjoying the garden for a couple of weeks now, and staff say it has already made a huge difference to their moods and outlook on life. Our support for this project follows the success of the Elder Clowns program, which also aims to brighten the lives of dementia patients at BCAC. I have had glowing reports about the initiative from selected Bankstown Sports staff, who witnessed

the clowns in action and were deeply moved by the experience. I am also pleased to report we have made a $10,000 donation to help the victims of last year’s deadly floods in the NSW Central west region. The town of Forbes was declared a natural disaster zone in September following the largest flood in over 50 years. Hundreds of homes were inundated, residents were forced to evacuate, crops and livestock were lost and one man lost his life. The funds were given to the local SES who have purchased a sandbagging machine, which will be used to protect homes in future flood events.

NURSES AND MIDWIVES The board and I were also invited to celebrate International Nurses & Midwives Day at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital on 12 May, where we donated funding for another round of scholarship programs, which will further the education of the staff there. This is the 11th year the club has supported the hospital through this program, with a $40,000 donation.

LA PIAZZA La Piazza is celebrating its 10th year at Bankstown Sports and continues to be one of our most popular dining venues. Its reputation within the local community and its impressive patronage is a testament to co-owners Mario Libertini and Gary Di Paola, who work tirelessly to bring ‘the taste of Italy’ to Bankstown. Congratulations to Mario and Gary, and to all of their staff for reaching this milestone.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of members who have recently passed away: Robert Everett, Thomas Jilbert, Peter Casey, Amine Joukhadar, John Mc Neill, Carol Ho- Elder, Richard Brinsmead, Margaret Wright, Allan Barton, John Siommonds, Pamela Chaffen, Gwen Wilkins, Raymond Lucre, Peter Hicks, Gina Woods, Joseph Condello, Max Mc Leay, Brian Bruce, John Sills, Mario Naudi, Donald Sclater, Susan Holmes, Brian Blair, Kenneth Robins, George Smith and Pele Lututui-Palmer. The following members were reported as being in hospital and on behalf of our President, Directors and all our members we wish them a speedy recovery: Maria Damianou, Peggy Long and Said Hanna.

THE ACRES CLUB

joins the family

Exciting times ahead for The Acres Club in Greenacre, which is being spruced up and refurbished for its members and guests. There’s a new addition to the Bankstown Sports Club family, with the state government formally approving our amalgamation with Greenacre Bowling Club, which will now be known as The Acres Club. The Greenacre venue was in need of a makeover, so Bankstown Sports has stepped in to help. Bankstown Sports has begun the process of upgrading all of The Acres Club’s services and facilities, aiming to give the venue a fresh, modern look. Carpet throughout the building has been replaced, with wooden floorboards now covering 4

Bankstown Sports InTouch

some of the floor space. There are new tables and chairs in the dining and bar areas, creating a more comfortable and relaxed feel. The bathrooms have been updated, as have the bar and gaming areas, and there are plans for a significant overhaul of the outdoor space, with a new kid’s play area and a 208-seat beer garden in the final design stages. We have a new team in the bistro, who have come up with a great selection of delicious meals. We have also introduced a number of craft beers and boutique wines to the beverage menu.

Editorial

Our aim is to make The Acres Club a favourite with your family, which is why we’re creating a club that can cater for all ages. Every Sunday we’ll have a jumping castle for the kids and on the first Sunday of each month, there will be more free entertainment and a special activity to keep the little ones occupied. We are currently in the process of merging all members from The Acres Club onto a Bankstown Sports Club membership. This is to ensure all members of Bankstown Sports and our associated venues have access to all of our great benefits, including birthday and New Year rewards, entry into exclusive member-only promotions, automatic membership to all five of our clubs, the ability to accrue and use membership points across all of our venues, and access to all dining and entertainment offerings at each of our clubs. We look forward to seeing you at The Acres Club soon. Bankstown Sports InTouch

New garden for

Bankstown City Aged Care residents Bankstown City Aged Care has created a beautiful new space for its elderly residents to relax in and enjoy, and Bankstown Sports Club is proud to be a part of it. Dementia is defined as a long-term loss of mental ability that interferes with normal daily activities. People living with dementia often lose their memory and the ability to complete familiar tasks, they misplace things, get confused with times and places, have trouble understanding words and visual images, and withdraw from work and social activities. More than 350,000 Australians are currently living with dementia, and that number is expected to climb steadily over the next 5 years.

Bankstown City Aged Care (BCAC) has been looking after our community since 1973, providing a safe, comfortable and enjoyable environment for its elderly residents. As well as residential care, it provides in-home support, respite care, advice and wellness programs to cater for all.

BCAC currently has over 100 residents living with dementia. The facility has a range of activities and services available to improve their quality of life and offer the highest level of care. This includes the Elder Clown project, which has been funded by Bankstown Sports Club, and has seen a significant decrease in the agitation levels of residents, a decline in behavioural disturbances and an improvement to the quality of family life. Another project the club has been happy to support through the ClubGRANTS scheme is the creation of a special sensory garden, designed specifically to meet the needs of dementia patients. The club has contributed $55,000 to fund the design and creation stage of this initiative. The new garden was completed in late May, and has replaced the old outdoor

space in the middle of the Gillawarna unit. It incorporates a range of different elements to tap into all five senses including colourful flowers, animal statues, usable gardening equipment and a new outdoor entertainment space. Residents, under the supervision of staff, are encouraged to maintain the garden themselves, and there are also plans to hold regular working bees with staff from Bankstown Sports Club. Research indicates that physical and visual access to nature can have a range of positive impacts on sufferers, including quicker recovery from illness, reduction in stress, better sleep patterns and improved absorption of Vitamin D, which is important for maintaining strong bones. It’s hoped this garden will do just that for the residents at Bankstown City Aged Care.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE CLUB Loyalty can be described as somewhat of a devotion or a faithfulness to a place, person or thing that someone holds dear. For Beverly Wood and Maria Losapio, that loyalty lies with Bankstown Sports. These two delightful ladies have both been coming to our club for roughly 30 years and say they’ll continue to pop in every week, until they physically aren’t able to get here anymore. So why do they keep coming back week in, week out? “This is the best club in the world. We’ve watched this club grow and progress over the years and we love it” says Maria, with a sense of pride in her voice. World's best whisky

AT BANKSTOWN SPORTS Sullivans Cove French Oak Single Malt Whisky is one of the top whiskies in the world and you can now enjoy it at Basement Brewhouse and Atrium Bar. For the past two years, down in the cellar of the Sullivans Cove whisky and gin distillery in Tasmania, two 20L barrels of their awardwinning French Oak Single Malt have been ageing, slowly developing their colour and flavour, until the taste was just right. A short time ago, one of the barrels was poured into 700ml bottles and was sent directly to Bankstown Sports Club, and we are now ready for you to try. Sullivans Cove whisky was established in 1994. It produces three types of whisky; A French Oak or ‘Winter Whisky’, an American Oak, and a Double Barrel, which is 1-part French and 2-parts American with a lighter taste. Their spirits are described as the quintessential small-batch luxury whisky, inspired by nature using traditional methods and only the purest Tasmanian ingredients. 20

Bankstown Sports Club purchased two barrels of the Sullivans Cove French Oak back in 2015 when it was voted the World’s Best Single Malt Whisky at the World Whisky Awards – the first time a whisky from somewhere other than Scotland or Japan had been awarded this honour.

from somewhere other than Scotland or Japan has been awarded this honour.

It is now one of the most sought after whiskies in the world, and Bankstown Sports is one of the only venues in NSW to purchase private stock for members and guests to enjoy. We will also have one of the original barrels that our whisky was distilled in, on display in Atrium Bar.

Sullivans Cove French Oak single malt whisky is now available at Basement Brewhouse and Atrium Bar for a limited time. Another barrel will arrive in late October.

ABOUT SULLIVAN’S COVE FRENCH OAK The HH525 was voted the World’s Best Single Malt Whisky at the 2014 World Whisky Awards, which was the first time a whisky

It’s described as a “big, fat, chewy whisky, full of rich toffee and molasses notes. You could almost be forgiven for mistaking it for Demerara rum on first taste!” (extract from sullivanscove.com)

Tasting Notes: Full, rich dark chocolate with cinnamon, orange peel, hazelnut and licorice mint. Palate: Rich and sweet front palate with flavours of chocolate, pepper, toffee and fruit cake. Finish: Long, lingering finish of dried fruit and dark chocolate.

You can also see Lah Lah on TV daily, on ABC KIDS and CBEEBIES (Foxtel/Austar), and via online streaming on STAN.

SATURDAY 15 JULY If you only see one family concert this year, Having Fun with Lah-Lah’s Big Live Band is not to be missed! This show is different from any other production; it’s not just singing and dancing… it’s educational too! The stars of ABC KIDS will take the audience through some tunes from their new album, as well as old favourites including Brush Your Teeth and Lola Loves to Dance.

Birrong Sports shaved

FOR A CURE! Birrong Sports members and their families have raised over $10,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation in this year’s World’s Greatest Shave. On the afternoon of Sunday, 26 March, something very special happened at Birrong Sports Club. A small group of members banded together and decided to raise money for a very important cause. They put the word out to other members and guests to get involved, but never expected the response they would receive. The group, led by long-time member Michelle Hillyer, organised a Shave for a Cure event at the club, to fundraise for the Leukaemia Foundation, which funds research and provides free services to support people with blood cancer. More than 30 people put their hands up to either shave or colour their hair in front of dozens of locals who turned out in support.

Member Simon Hawthorne – who hadn’t had a haircut in over 7 years – had all of his hair and beard shaved off, while bowler Phil Woodley managed to raise $870 himself. Michelle Hillyer also ended up shaving her head to a number 4! Birrong Sports Bowls Coordinator, Ian Stone, raised over $600 to shave off his moustache. In the 35 years they have been together, his wife has never seen him without a moustache! Their daughter Katie also got involved, and had all of her hair cut off. Birrong Sports contributed $1,000 to the event and a raffle was held with gift cards, wine and meat trays given away as prizes. All up, the group raised more than $10,000! Congratulations to everyone involved.

Beanies for BALDIES! The Baulkham Hills Sports Club bingo players have been knitting away to help sick kids at The Children’s Hospital in Westmead. The Baulkham Hills Sports Club bingo players have been very busy. Our members and guests are always finding ways to help the local community and a couple of months ago, some of our beautiful bingo gals jumped on board the Beanies for Baldies (B4B) initiative for The Children’s Hospital in Westmead. B4B delivers handmade knitted beanies, booties, mittens and scarfs to patients in the Variety Ward. These patients are children suffering from cancer and other immunodeficiency illnesses, as well as infectious diseases. Immunodeficiency disorders disrupt the body’s ability to defend itself against bacteria, viruses and parasites, which means sufferers get sick easily and often contract infections. Our bingo players decided to help, and got together to make more than 160 beanies, 4 pairs of booties, 2 pairs of mittens and a scarf! The donation was the biggest single donation

to B4B to date, and means they can officially expand beyond the walls of the Variety Ward into other areas of the Children’s Hospital, and out to other hospitals. Lorraine Harrington goes to bingo at the club every week and knitted 4 beanies. She says the project is something very close to her heart. “My neighbour’s grandchild had cancer and unfortunately passed away in the ward, so this is a bit of a personal thing for me. I think it’s really important that we have initiatives like this, to try and make them cheery. Most people put a pom pom on or something bright and colourful”. Some of the other ladies in the group have knitted more than 20 beanies each. They say they’ll keep going and will continue to support this incredible cause. If you would like to play bingo at Baulkham Hills Sports, it is on every Monday and Friday from 10am.

T R O P E R S T R O SP WE SHARE THE NEWS FROM OUR SPORTING CLUBS

G.O.A.L.

Bankstown Sports Club has introduced a new accreditation system to help our associated sporting clubs operate as productively and efficiently as possible. Bankstown Sports supports 42 sporting clubs in the Bankstown, Birrong, Baulkham Hills and Greenacre areas, providing financial, in-kind and administrative assistance to help them run effectively and in the best interests of their members. Each club is governed by its own committee which is responsible for the day-to-day operations. By way of ensuring each club is being run the best way possible, the G.O.A.L. (Governance and Operations Accreditation Level) program has been established to identify any areas that may need improvement, and where Bankstown Sports could offer more support and training.

There are five key focus areas: 1. Finance Management and Governance 2. Communication, Information Management and Community Engagement 3. Player, Volunteer Management and Codes of Behaviour 4. Health & Safety and Risk Management 5. Equipment and Facilities Management In a survey administered by consultants Crowe Horwath late last year, 33 clubs were asked to mark themselves on the above areas and based on these results, were given an Accreditation level from 1-5; the higher the

rating, the better the governance of the club. That score was then converted to a star rating with recommendations given to clubs as to how they can improve their governance and operations in key areas. The survey will be re-administered in the first half of 2018 to chart the improvement across our clubs. In time, we may look to make this star-rating system a public branding for our sporting clubs to reassure members and the public that our sporting clubs are operating according to best practice. That’s the GOAL!
