Chairman's Report

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT JOHN MURRAY OAM, CHAIRMAN

It’s going to be a busy few months ahead for Bankstown Sports and its associated venues as we prepare for our 60th anniversary, the opening of the Flinders Centre and we enter another round of ClubGRANTS.

VALE STEVE FOLKES In February this year, I was saddened to hear bout the sudden passing of legendary Bulldogs player and coach Steve Folkes. Steve began his career with Bankstown Sports Junior Rugby League Club in 1965 and played 200 games for the club. His first game was for the Bankstown Sports M1 side against the club’s M2 team at Kelso Park, East Hills. Steve is a legend of the CanterburyBankstown Bulldogs, having played 245 matches for the club including six grand finals, before retiring in 1991. He then went on to coach the Bulldogs for 11 seasons, and helped them to a premiership in 2004. Steve also represented NSW in nine State of Origin matches and played for the Kangaroos on Australia’s 1986 tour of Great Britain and France. I still remember attending a special testimonial dinner for Steve in 1989, hosted by Graeme Hughes at Bankstown Sports Club. We all sat down for a meal, an auction and a video tribute to the man who back then, had already made such a huge impact on the sport of rugby league, and the local community. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I pass on my condolences to the Folkes family.

FLINDERS CENTRE The foyer of our new 9-storey office tower will open on 12 June, providing a second

WELFARE REPORT June, July and August 2018

major entry point into the club for members and guests. It has been fitted out beautifully and features a dedicated club reception desk, as well as direct access to all floors of the carpark at the Restwell Street end. We are expecting a number of our tenants to move into their new spaces in the coming months, offering a range of new services to the local community. Flinders Centre has changed the skyscape of Bankstown’s CBD and features spectacular 360-degree views of Bankstown, the city and greater Sydney. I think all of our tenants are really going to enjoy their new office space and I look forward to working very closely with them in the coming years.

ANZAC DAY I’m pleased to announce Bankstown Sports Bowls raised almost $4,000 at their annual ANZAC Day Mixed Bowls Fundraiser for Legacy. The directors and I joined members and their guests for a special commemoration ceremony, some friendly games of lawn bowls and a casual lunch, to raise money for the widows and children of our Defence Force personnel who have been injured or killed while serving our country. Birrong Sports Bowls also held an ANZAC Day fundraiser to support their local Legacy, raising $600 through contributions from members and guests on the day. They held a small ceremony out the front of the club in the morning before everyone enjoyed a few games of bowls and lunch at The Italian Bistro.

NURSES & MIDWIVES SCHOLARSHIPS It was International Nurses & Midwives Day on Friday 11 May and the Board and I were delighted to be invited along to BankstownLidcombe Hospital to join their celebrations. We contributed $40,000 in funding for another round of education and training scholarships for the nurses and midwives there, which will help to further their skills in specialised areas. This is the 12th year the club has supported the hospital through this program.

SALVATION ARMY I would like to congratulate the Salvation Army who recently celebrated 100 years in the Bankstown area. They are such a vital service in our community, providing assistance to the elderly, disadvantaged and young people, and Bankstown Sports is proud to have a long-standing relationship with them.

60TH ANNIVERSARY And finally, as we prepare to mark Bankstown Sports Club’s 60th anniversary in September, we’ve been catching up with some of our longest-serving members to look back at some of the fond memories they have of the club. On pages 10 and 11 of this magazine, we catch up with Robert Rudd and Brian Marshall, who were both foundation members. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our members and their guests for their ongoing patronage and support, as we wouldn’t be the club we are today without you.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of members who have recently passed away: John Wilson, Guido Zanella, Martin Moylan, Kathleen Gil, Kathleen Cummings, Jean Tyrrell, Alan Sowden, Anthony Miller, Harold Bartlett, Joyce Lee, Henry Williams, Sylvia Bell, Sybil Chamberlain, Richard Brownlow, Iris Bayly, Neil Cook and George Cozma. The following member was reported as being in hospital and on behalf of our President, Directors and all our members we wish them a speedy recovery: Neville Woods.

BANKSTOWN CITY UNITY BANK Bankstown City Unity Bank is a memberowned bank with no external shareholders to influence its activities, which means that any surplus it generates is returned to its members through better interest rates, products and services. The organisation merged with Bankstown City Credit Union in 2017, which has been servicing the local area for 50 years, and CEO Mark Genovese says this new association with Bankstown Sports is another fitting partnership. “We’re community-owned and we have a responsibility to invest back into the community, so our values are very much in alignment with the club. We’re really excited about being associated with Bankstown Sports because they have played a significant social role in the community, and so do we, and we think it’s a great natural partnership that we want to build and grow”. Bankstown City Unity Bank offers a range of loans, credit cards, financial assistance and

everyday banking services, but the new outlet in Flinders Centre isn’t your typical banking set up. Mark says they’ve also created an interactive hub featuring the latest technology for people to browse and try. “We’re going to provide a bit of a different experience so it won’t be your typical banking chamber. Yes – you will be able to sit down and get advice on a home loan or personal loan and term deposits, but we also wanted to bring some of the latest technology to showcase. Things like 3-D printing, virtual reality, the latest mobiles and laptops and desktops”. “We want people to get a sense of the impact technology is going to have on people’s lives, both from a commercial and social aspect. This is another way for us to give back to the community. We’ve been doing something similar in Bathurst with our tech hub there and the community has really embraced the concept. The amount of people that just come in and have a play with our digital toys and gadgets has been incredible”. Bankstown City Unity Bank is expected to open in June 2018. THE ORIGINAL BANKSTOWN SPORTS CLUBHOUSE

Looking back on

60 YEARS ROBERT RUDD

As we prepare to mark the 60th anniversary of Bankstown Sports Club this September, we thought we would take a trip down memory lane with some of our longest serving members.

Building the foundations… WITH BANKSTOWN SPORTS CLUB MEMBER #110 Back in 1958, a group of local men decided to form a combined sports club to provide a common meeting place for all sports in the Bankstown district. From humble beginnings in a small church hall on Greenfield Parade, these men literally built the club from the ground up, paving the way for the spectacular organisation that it is today. Robert Rudd is one of those men who volunteered his time and skills to get the club off the ground. Here is what he remembers about the early days. “When it first began, the club was just a hall that had been owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. It had a small stage up one end that had water underneath where they used to baptise their members. 10

Bankstown Sports InTouch

When we took over, it became our cellar where we kept our cold drinks. “I did some voluntary work on the building as I was a concreter and cement renderer, and my brother George helped out too. He went onto become Vice President of the club at one point, and he’s now a life member. Everyone at the time just pitched in and helped. There was a real mateship about the whole thing, all getting together for a common purpose. “I played a lot of sports for the club and I think I was the second player to win the Club Championship for golf, in our second year of operation. I also worked at the club at different times as a steward and as a contractor; I remember I cement rendered the squash courts.

Editorial CELEBRATING THE START OF STAGE 1 OF CONSTRUCTION

BANKSTOWN SPORTS IN 1986

Reminiscing… WITH BANKSTOWN SPORTS CLUB MEMBER #191 When we approached Brian Marshall about taking part in an interview for the club’s 60th anniversary, he was only too happy to oblige, sending through a letter with a detailed account of his earliest memories of our club. Here is his account of how he got involved with Bankstown Sports. “At 23 years of age, I began attending a few of the early meetings held in the old fibro Latter Day Saints building, which was located where the club stands now. I was alerted to these meetings by members of the Bankstown United Rugby League Club, where I played football. Unfortunately, after a few weeks – as young men do - we became bored, as we didn’t seem to be progressing very far with setting up the club.

“I have quite a few fond memories like winning three Club Championships with the golf club, I played A-grade cricket for Bankstown Sports and I also won a few snooker championships with my brother. I lived and worked around Bankstown for many years and I used to pull into the club almost every afternoon and meet up with a few other blokes here. “I’ve been back to the club a few times over the last few years but it’s getting harder and harder as we get older. I had my 60th wedding anniversary there recently. I met my wife at the old Masonic Hall that used to be just up the road from where the club is now. She was 15 and I was 18, just going into the army, and we’ve been together ever since. “I’m really proud of Bankstown Sports and the club it is today, especially because of the work my brother and I put into it. All three of my brothers and I were foundation members when it first opened, and it’s very dear to my heart”.

udd Robert R #110 Member

“Soon after, a sailor who lived in my street began knocking on my door once a week, telling me the proposed club could not begin to operate until it had 200 debentured members. I ended up paying the 10 pounds and became member 191. “My memory tells me, the first night the new club opened, they had an 18-gallon keg of beer and three pokie machines – a 2-shilling, 1-shilling and a sixpence. The club soon became a focal point for many young men and women in the area. I remember Darts became very popular early on and several teams were set up to visit other clubs for tournaments. “It continued to grow and soon we had replaced the fibro hall with a more substantial building, after purchasing some of the surrounding land. At the first general meeting, the Executive Committee was officially voted in and handed their operational duties to ensure the smooth running of the club. “I took my then girlfriend – now wife, Gail - to the club for the first time in 1964. We both had a hamburger and to this day, she still remembers it being the loveliest hamburger she had ever tasted! “Over the years, my work and personal life has taken me away from Bankstown at times, but I have always remained a member of Bankstown Sports. I still have 18 of the early annual membership badges that were issued, and my wife and I still try and visit the club whenever we can. “I will always remain a member as I believe this club looks after its members and contributes so much to charity and various community groups. I would like to congratulate the past and present club executive committee for their continued foresight and forward planning, and I wish the club continued success for the future”.

Bankstown Salvation Army

Celebrates 100 years! Dozens of people have turned out for a day of celebration, to look back on the past, acknowledge the present and prepare for the future. The Salvation Army is working hard to transform Australia, one life at a time. This vital service provides physical, psychological and spiritual support to local communities in a variety of different ways including crisis relief, community meals, support and assistance for addiction, emergency accommodation, employment help, youth services and lessons in everyday life skills such as basic conversational English classes. Among these incredible programs are a few services that are uniquely available to Bankstown residents including the English through Singing Class, and the Courtyard Café which operates two days per week to feed the hungry. On Sunday 11 March, Bankstown Salvation Army celebrated 100 years of service in the local area with prayers at the Bankstown Citadel, followed by a fellowship lunch and a heritage celebration. Bankstown Salvation Army Pastor and Corps Officer Frank Wang has been working with the Bankstown Salvation Army since 2016, and says they are now in a better place than ever. “Our mission statement is to transform lives. Everyone has different needs and we try our best to cater for all by taking a holistic approach. We aim to provide long term help

that is sustainable. Compared to two years ago, we are in a much better place now as we have developed many new relationships with people and organisations in the local community”. Frank says he finds his job highly rewarding but admits it can be challenging at times. “The most rewarding experience I have had working with this organisation is helping to transform people’s lives. Sometimes I meet people who do not have a place to sleep or have not had a proper meal in days. It takes patience to develop relationships with them and journey with them. Helping these people get back on their feet is a highly rewarding experience.” Bankstown Sports Club contributed $500 towards the centenary celebration to help provide a free community lunch on the day, and Frank says it was very much appreciated. “Bankstown Sports contributions are very significant for us. The meaning is much deeper and wider than the physical cash. As a charity in this community, any support is huge for us. It is encouraging for us to see other local organisations supporting us. Do something! Day Bankstown Sports is getting involved in some great initiatives for the month of July, as part of Australia’s biggest celebration of community volunteering. Bringing people together through random acts of kindness is what Do Something Day is all about. Bankstown Sports is proud to be involved in the campaign again this year, encouraging our staff to take part in a variety of activities in our community. Do Something Day will officially be held on Wednesday 25 July, but we’ve decided to extend some of our activities beyond a single day.

SALVATION ARMY FOOD DRIVE We’ll be running a food drive for the Salvation Army Bankstown throughout the month of July, where our employees will be encouraged to bring in canned goods and non-perishables to help those who are less fortunate in our community. Collection bins will be set up in our staffroom and at the end of the campaign, they will be delivered to the local Salvos depot.

BANKSTOWN CITY AGED CARE Every Wednesday, BCAC welcomes volunteers to come and meet with its residents for a cup of tea and a chat, to help

them feel connected to the community. We’re encouraging our employees to take part in these visits as a way of meeting new people and bringing a smile to an elderly resident’s face.

RECREATION SPORTS AND AQUATIC CLUB RSAC is an unfunded community-based organisation that provides sport, recreation and social activities and opportunities for people with a disability in the Bankstown area. One of their more popular initiatives is a Saturday Morning Cooking Class held at their Greenfield Parade centre, and we’ll be calling for staff volunteers to go along and help out.

SENSORY MOVIE SESSIONS Bankstown Sports will be inviting a number of Autism and disability support groups to the club on Wednesday 18 July, to be part of a special sensory movie session in The Theatre. This session will cater for adults and children with autism and sensory awareness concerns, with the audio for the movie turned down and the lights dimmed, so all attendees can feel comfortable in their surroundings.

Rugby League

LOSES A LEGEND Following his shock passing earlier this year, Steve Folkes is being remembered as a sporting icon whose legacy will live on through junior athletes in the Canterbury Bankstown area. Steve Folkes is a name that’s all too familiar with rugby league fans in the Canterbury Bankstown area, not only for his incredible achievements on the footy field, but for being a mentor and a positive role model for young athletes. He grew up in the local area and began his footy career with Bankstown Sports Junior Rugby League Club in 1965, at the age of 6. He was a standout on the field from an early age and continued his dedication to hard work in other areas of his life as well, attending Punchbowl Boys High School where he performed very well and would go onto be School Captain in his final year.

Steve joined the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs where he played 245 first grade games between 1978-1991, appearing in six grand finals and winning four. He also represented NSW on nine occasions in State of Origin football and played five test matches for the Kangaroos. He went on to coach the Bulldogs between 1998 and 2008, winning the premiership in 2004. He also coached the Australian Women’s Rugby League team. Steve was a sporting icon in the local area and his legacy lives on, even after his passing. In 1988, Bankstown Sports Junior Rugby

League Club renamed their home ground ‘Steve Folkes Reserve’ in his honour, and the name remains today. The club continues to be one of the most successful junior rugby league clubs in the district, with 26 teams ranging in age from Under 4's to Under 20’s, and currently holds the record for the most grand final wins in one season. Over a thousand mourners gathered at Belmore Sports Ground to farewell the 59-year-old, who will be remembered as a champion player and coach, who was one of the toughest and one of the best.

It's all happening at Basement

BREWHOUSE Live DJ’s, new menu items, boozy shakes, Growler gift packs and special sporting events… if you haven’t been to the Brewhouse for a while, its time to pop in for a visit. We all know that Basement Brewhouse is your craft beer destination in Sydney’s west, featuring 30 taps with a variety of craft beers and ciders, wines and cocktails, a delicious burger bar and gourmet delicatessen. But have you seen all of the cool new stuff down there? Let’s start with the food… We’ve kept all of your favourite burgers but our chefs have come up with some incredible new flavours for you to try! There’s now a Charcoal Bun you can order with any of our burgers, made using bamboo charcoal in a brioche bun style. There’s two new chicken burgers; The Chicky Baby with buttermilk fried chicken breast, slaw, butter lettuce, American double jack cheese and peri peri mayonnaise, and the Basement Roadrunner with crumbed chicken breast schnitzel, smashed avocado, butter lettuce, bacon, onion, tomato, cheese sauce and aioli. We’ve also introduced The Peking Duck with succulent pieces of Peking duck, butter lettuce, shallot sticks, cucumber, coriander and house-made hoisin aioli, and there’s two new beef burgers – Say Cheese has beef, crispy bacon, double jack cheese, mozzarella sticks, butter lettuce and secret sauce, and the Moo Moo has grain-fed Darling Downs scotch fillet, caramelised onion, iceburg lettuce, a free-range egg, swiss cheese, fries and tomato relish. The Espresso Porky is our new pork burger which features BBQ pulled pork, butter lettuce, slaw, coriander and a spicy coffee-infused BBQ sauce. We have two new Hot Dawgs which are served with super crunchy fries on a toasted milk roll. There’s the Snow Dawg with delicious coursed and smoked German kransky, jalapenos, cheese, slaw, tomato and mustard sauce, or why not try the Maple Bacon Hot Dawg with grilled Austrian krainer sausage, maple bacon, crispy fried onion rings and smoky BBQ sauce. If you’re after a couple of sides to go with your burger, try the Peking Duck Fries, Mozarella Sticks, Jalapeno Poppers, pulled pork Nachos or Potato Skins, which are all new to the menu and they’re to die for!

NEW BOOZY SHAKES Basement Brewhouse has a habit of looking a little outside the box when it comes to inspiration for new drink ideas, and our new range of alcoholic milkshakes are no exception. We’ve combined your favourite spirits and liqueurs with some delicious shake flavours for the ultimate indulgence. There’s the Salted Caramel Tequila Shake, the Kahlua Cookies & Cream, the Hokey Pokey Baileys Shake and the Classic Kraken Back Rum Chocolate Shake. They’re all $13 each and they’re perfect for a cheeky afternoon treat or nightcap.

COCKTAILS If beer isn’t your thing, you’ve probably already tried some of our wines and cocktails on tap. We’ve now expanded our offering to include a range of handmade cocktails! There’s a classic lime and mint Mojito served with Australian Beenleigh white rum, or an Aperol Spritz with Aperol and Prosecco served over ice, which is super refreshing if you like your drinks light and fruity. The Dark & Stormy is a blend of Dead Mans Drop spiced rum, Mr Black coffee liqueur and ginger beer, and the Fruit Bowl is a sweet and tropical mixture of passionfruit, mango and coconut liqueurs, topped with pineapple juice.

And if you’re sharing with friends, you can’t go past the traditional English classic Pimms Carafe, served in – you guessed it – a carafe, with two glasses.

GROWLER GIFT PACKS We all have that one mate who is so hard to buy for when it comes to birthdays and Christmas, but Basement Brewhouse has you covered. Our Growler Gift Packs get you a refillable take-away Growler, two pint glasses and a $20 gift card, so your mate can come in and fill the Growler with any beer they like from Basement Brewhouse. All of this for just $48! Come in and grab one today.

LIVE DJ You guys talk – and the Brewhouse listens. You’ve been telling us how much you love our private booths with their own TV’s and the sunken lounge, and the fire places are going to be the place to be during winter. But some of you wanted a bit more atmosphere. So… we now have a live DJ playing a mix of your favourite songs from 8pm-1am every Friday and Saturday night, so you and your mates can sit back and watch your favourite sport to a great soundtrack!

We're smokin'! We have some deliciously tempting events coming up at Baulkham Hills Sports in the coming months… You may have noticed the growing trend of barbeque foods around at the moment, extending well beyond the traditional snags, burgers and chicken that dad does on the four-burner in the backyard. Tender, melt-inyour-mouth cuts of meat are the top items on many menus around Sydney, and we’re excited to unveil our own range of slowcooked meats at The Gallery Restaurant. Our talented chefs have been experimenting with different flavours and recipes on their new pellet smoker, which is stationed in the courtyard near the main entrance to the club. They’ve been smoking a variety of different meats to see what our members and guests might like to try. Available on the menu now is a Smoked Lamb Rump with spiced fruit chutney and port wine jus, Combination Ribs with Buffalo Wings,

and Smokey BBQ Ribs which are basted in a hickory smoked BBQ sauce. Other spices they’re looking into are Moroccan, Texan, African, Jamaican, Korean and Portuguese, with sauces like Honey Bourbon, Chipotle, Bourbon Maple Jam and Sriracha. To give everyone the opportunity to sample our new meat range, we’re holding Smoking Sundays on the first Sunday of each month where members and guests can come along and try the different flavours. For more information, visit BaulkhamHillsSports.com

AUBURN TENNIS CLUB

Celebrates 50 Years

From humble beginnings as a tennis clubhouse to a fully licensed club that’s a favourite among locals, Auburn Tennis and Recreation Club has stood the test of time for more than half a decade. Auburn Tennis and Recreation Club has been located at 181 Chisholm Road in Auburn for half a century, servicing the local community and providing a casual meeting place for locals to enjoy a meal and a few drinks. It has a proud history and has undergone some major upgrades over the years, including a significant makeover and a name change.

recollections of former, long-term members of both associations.

In 2001, fire ripped through the tournament room at the Association courts, destroying all records of the Berala-Carramar Hardcourt Tennis Association. Documents relating to the Auburn and Lidcombe Association – which amalgamated with Berala-Carramar in July 1969 – were also lost in the blaze.

In 1936, the local council offered to build new tennis courts in Wyatt Park specifically for the Berala-Carramar Association to use, manage and maintain. It was a very successful tennis association, with a large number of teams, divisions and competitions.

The following information has been taken from external records and reliable

The club’s origins date back to 1927 when the Berala-Carramar Hardcourt Tennis Association affiliated with the NSW Hardcourt Tennis Association. Back then, tennis associations used a lot of privately-owned courts to host matches and tournaments, as well as courts built and owned by council.

In 1968, Berala-Carramar Association opened a licensed club on Chisholm Road in Auburn and named it the Berala-Carramar

Tennis Club. In 2005, the club underwent a major expansion to accommodate the needs of the local community, and also changed its name to Auburn Tennis and Recreation Club. In 2014, more renovation work was carried out to modernise the facilities to its present state. The venue then amalgamated with Bankstown Sports in December 2017. Although they are situated adjacent to one another, Auburn Tennis and Recreation Club and the Berala-Carramar Tennis Association operate as separate entities, while still offering local residents a variety of services, products and facilities. If you haven’t popped into Auburn Tennis Club yet, we’d love to see you! We have a variety of weekly activities including bingo, meat raffles and poker, as well as a courtesy bus that runs on Friday and Saturday nights. The venue has been updated with fresh décor and a new bar area to give it a modern look and feel, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The darts club wants

you!

If you’ve ever thought about giving darts a go, now is the perfect time to get involved! Did you know, the first darts were used in warfare in ancient history? Soldiers would cut down arrows and crossbow bolts and use them as miniature javelins in battle, and it was the practice of this skill that eventually developed into the game it is today. With origins dating back that far, it’s no wonder you can find a dart board or two in almost every pub or club around the world. It’s also a widely followed professional competitive game, where the top players are considered celebrities and tournaments are big social events. Bankstown Sports has two darts clubs which cater for all ages, genders and abilities, and they’re currently recruiting for new members. The Social Darts Club meets every Tuesday morning at 10.30am at Bankstown Sports Bowls Club, where they play a few social games on a 501 points system and catch up for a drink and

a meal. There are weekly prizes including meat trays and groceries, and it’s a great way to meet and interact with new people. The Monday Night Darts Club participates in a District Competition each week, with games held at Bankstown Sports Bowls, and other clubs in the local area. Baulkham Hills

CRICKET TURNS 100! As the club prepares to celebrate its centenary season in 2018/19, we take a look back at the organisation’s rich history. Baulko Cricket Club, as it is affectionately known by it’s members, has been ingrained in the Hills community for the past 100 years as a premier sporting club and social network for cricketers of all ages. Early records show the club was involved in both social and competitive matches in 1898 and 1899 in the Parramatta area, and in 1911, it became known as the Baulkham Hills Pleasure and Pastimes Club. However, World War I forced the cancellation of competitive cricket and other activities, and the club closed its doors for a number of years. In 1916, club members began making moves to reinstate the club, so they set about sourcing a home ground. The committee was

52

Bankstown Sports InTouch

granted permission by council to clear an area in Park Road Reserve where they could hold regular cricket matches. For 3 years, club members devoted their time to carving out the bush to create an oval, which would later be renamed Ted Horwood Reserve. In 1918, the club resumed its operations but was registered under a different name – Baulkham Hills Cricket Club. In 1919, they held their first seniors competition match at the new ground. At the time, a local newspaper reported that the batsmen had a distinct advantage over the fielding team, as there were steep inclines on either side of the wicket which they could glide the ball down.

By 1935, the club had grown into one of the largest clubs in the Parramatta District Cricket Association and if you fast forward to today, you will see 200 registered juniors and 130 senior players donning the maroon and gold week in, week out. The Baulko Cricket committee is currently planning a number of events to celebrate their 100th anniversary including a special centenary dinner at Castle Hill RSL on Friday 19 October 2018. All past and present members and their guests are invited to attend, there will be a guest speaker and plenty of memorabilia on display. Organisers are also creating an historical book which will feature entries from life members and past players, milestone statistics from over the years, and much more. Details of all events will be posted as they are finalised on the club website www.baulkocricket.com.au and on the Facebook page. If you would like to be involved with the Baulkham Hills Cricket Club centenary celebration, please contact baulkocricket100@gmail.com

Sports Program

Bankstown Sports is committed to creating fun, friendly and safe environments for all athletes to participate in sport. On Sunday 11 March, Bankstown Sports launched their new Safer Sports initiative with a sports gala day at The Crest Sporting Complex. Safer Sports was created by Bankstown Sports Club and its associated venues to promote our sporting clubs as fun, friendly and safe places to participate in sport. The Gala Day encouraged junior and senior Soccer and Hockey players to come down for a few friendly and trial games ahead of the upcoming season. More than 300 participants took part in the event and a great day was had by all. Baulkham Hills Hockey Club committee member, Andrew Attard, says the Safer Sports Initiative is very important to small clubs like his. “Whether you are a junior or senior, sport can play a profound role in development and overall health. It is important that we create an

inclusive, safe environment where people can make friends and play some serious sport. Over the coming years Bankstown Sports intends to build on the Safer Sports brand by providing our associated sporting clubs with a growing resource kit full of best practice materials, in areas such as child protection, healthy canteens, injury prevention, insurance advice, risk mitigation, the Sun Smart message, and plenty more. Bankstown Sports Club is committed to the safety and wellbeing of our associated sporting club members. Safer Sports has an overarching focus on making our associated sporting clubs a safe and inclusive environment in which to participate. We aim to create a strong reputation for our sporting clubs as the clubs of choice in this regard within their communities.

Bankstown Sports is proud to support Bradley Kilpatrick, who will be representing Australia at the Softball World Championship in Prince Albert, Canada. Bradley Kilpatrick has been playing Softball since he was 4-years-old after some friends invited him to join a local team. He began his career with The Georges River Association and he quickly developed his skills as one of the top pitchers in the club. In 2016, he was invited to try out for the Under 17s NSW Softball Team, which saw him travelling interstate to play competitive games against teams from around the world. It was at one of these camps that he was first spotted by talent scouts, and he impressed again at the National Softball Championships held in Blacktown, in January this year. In what he describes as a dream come true, Bradley has been selected to represent Australia at the Softball World Championship at Prince Albert in Canada, in July. These trips are completely self-funded and usually cost thousands of dollars, which is where Bankstown Sports has stepped in to help. The club has supported Bradley with cash and in-kind donations over the last few years and will assist him again this year with $500 to cover some of his expenses. We wish Bradley the best of luck!

DON'T BELIEVE IN NEVER! Earlier this year, the AFL launched a national campaign to highlight extraordinary stories within their sport, and a member of the Bankstown Sports AFL Club was asked to take part.

HAVE YOU TRIED BASEBALL? If you would like to give Baseball a go, Bankstown Sports Baseball Club will be running a special winter program at Boggabilla Reserve on Johnson Road in Bass Hill on Monday nights from July to September. Weekly sessions will run between 30 July and 24 September from 6pm-8pm, with experienced and accredited coaches to cater for all skill levels. For more information, contact the Bankstown Sports Baseball Club at bs.baseball@hotmail.com.

Over the past few months, you may have caught a glimpse of the AFL’s new TV campaign Don’t Believe In Never, which showcases the remarkable stories of three passionate and dedicated players, who have overcome adversity to be part of teams that they love. One of these players is from the Bankstown Sports Bull Sharks Under 18’s women’s team, and her story is quite unique. Dema is from Bankstown and comes from a conservative Islamic family. She had absolutely no interest in AFL until a teacher at her school introduced the sport to their PE classes, and she was instantly hooked. When she first went home and told her parents she wanted to join a team, her father Stephen immediately said no, worried she would get injured. However, after some convincing, he allowed Dema to join the Bankstown Sports Bull Sharks in a multicultural team of young women. After watching his daughter play and seeing the joy that the game brought her, Stephen jumped on board and is now the team’s number one supporter!

In their first game of the 2016 AFL season, Dema’s team lost 110-0. In 2017, they reached the Grand Final. Dema says while she loves playing AFL, the feeling of being part of a team is more important than winning. To view the full video, visit the Bankstown Sports AFL Club page on Facebook.

SUCCESS AT COMM GAMES Congratulations to former Bankstown Sports Athletics Club member Kyle Cranston, who came fifth overall in the Men’s Decathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The 25-year-old finished third in the 1500m and the Javelin and was among the top performers in the other disciplines, which saw him finish on 7734 points. Kyle was a member of BSAC throughout his childhood and teenage years, and also became Australia’s first ever medallist in the Decathlon at the Summer Universiade.
