president’s report

For our club, the 2020/21 season promised a lot with a playing group consisting of a strong mix of young exciting talent and experienced players all supported by a well-established coaching program that we know delivers opportunity for success. When the season wrapped up we had an outstanding win in the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup and we finished in the top half of the table in 1’s, 2’s and 3s.

There is much to be celebrated at Bankstown and it isn’t always a trophy but rather a consistent sense of purpose and belonging for all that pass through the gates. One of the highlights for the year was the ongoing enthusiasm at training and the spirit in which games were played. The Bulldog fighting spirit, the community involvement, the extensive network of volunteers and the authenticity in which we open our arms and welcome everyone are all great examples of our “community spirit”.

The 2020/21 season was a season like no other as we collectively grappled with the impact of the global Pandemic. Whilst we staggered the start of the season, varied fixtures and implemented a range of COVID safe measures, the cricket continued throughout the summer without incident and that’s a credit to all players, officials and the SCA and CNSW for their strong leadership and guidance in managing the competition.

I would like to thank Canterbury Bankstown City Council for their enduring support and indeed we are fortunate to have access to incredible grounds that are always superbly presented. In fact our grounds are the standard by which others are measured, of which we are all exceedingly proud.

I would like to thank the Bankstown Sports Club, long term sponsors and great friends of cricket and the broader community. In my view the Sports Club is the best of the best, an organisation of great drive, integrity and compassion. I feel our partnership has endured for so many years because of common values and a “can do” attitude that just finds a way.

Further work was completed in 2020/21 to garner support and funding for our latest building project and we thank everyone involved across the club for their backing and effort in developing the vision. With the necessary financial planning comprising grants,

donations, general fundraising, sponsorships and the support of council and key Cricket stakeholders I hope the facility enhancements can be realised soon.

I would also like to give thanks to all that contributed to the successful running of the club – the various committee members, selectors, captains, in fact all volunteers who contributed in so many ways –we couldn’t exist without your support & involvement.

I hope you enjoy the Annual Report - another outstanding production by the genius of David Clifton and Marty Klumpp.

Scott Grant

HonorarY secretarY’s report

I have pleasure in presenting the Club’s 70th Annual Report.

Highlights of our 2020/21 season were:

• Maintaining a sense of humour, personal and group resilience as we managed our way through a Coronavirus affected 2020 offseason and pre-season. The challenges included delayed A W Green Shield trials, split grade trials timetables and delayed competition start dates and changed match formats for 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.

• Winning the ‘Kingsgrove Sports T20 Trophy’ following several near misses in recent seasons.

• 2nd Grade (5th) and 3rd Grade (4th) reaching the finals qualifying series.

• Hosting Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup (Final) matches at Memorial Oval.

• Hosting the NSW Women’s Premier Cricket final at Memorial Oval.

• Securing a major financial commitment from Bankstown Sports Club for the Memorial Oval Masterplan project. This will see BSC match other project funding $ for $ to a maximum of $1.5m over three years. We also secured Cricket NSW’s support via an application for a Cricket Australia Infrastructure Grant (April 2021) and CB City Council’s support to lodge a Greater Cities Sports Facility Fund submission (July 2021).

The Club’s coaching team was led by former 1st Grade Captain and Life Member Gary Crowfoot. Gary was supported by James Bourne, Michael Polson and Aaron Bird. Nic Carruthers and Chris Ridley coached the Poidevin Gray Shield and AW Green Shield sides respectively. Gary’s enthusiasm for his role and the Club in general is amazing. He literally lives and breathes this Club 24/7; there is no more committed and passionate Bulldog than Gary Crowfoot. Gary has orchestrated a major change to the Coaching Team for 2021/22. One of our favourite sons, former Australia A, NSW and Bankstown batsman Corey Richards, is taking on the Head Coach role. In Gary’s own words “I felt the time was right for a new face in the sheds; someone to

inject new ideas and give the boys different perspectives”. In truth, Gary has been lobbying Corey to “come home” for a few years. Gary will remain part of the coaching team, providing specialist batting coaching and supporting our Junior Bulldogs Academy and Women’s cricket needs. James Bourne announced at our end of season function that family and work pressures will mean he needs to take a back step from coaching for a few years; the resulting standing ovation said it all; James is much admired and appreciated and we can’t wait for him to be back in the kennel in any capacity.

Life Member Dean Magee again performed the role of Chairman of Selectors with 100% commitment amid the uncertainty (chaos) caused by COVID. With split trials

timetables, lower grades only playing LO formats until Christmas, challenges with player availability, sudden lockdowns (e.g., Northern Beaches cluster), the challenges seemed to compound every week. But Dean always remained focussed and levelheaded to ensure we got the best 11 on the paddock in every grade, every match. Huge thanks Deano; a great effort under trying circumstances that would have left many flailing. Whether scoring, lifting wicket covers or providing afternoon teas, we value every contribution from our volunteers. There are however some people who go way ‘above and beyond’, making exceptional contributions to ensure our club continues to function as efficiently as possible…

Marty Klumpp

Scott will hand over the reins at our AGM in July following a highly successful 15-year stint as President. During this time Scott has developed us into a more professional club, establishing strategies, policies and procedures that are recognised as a benchmark for Premier Clubs nationally. This work was recognised when BDCC won the inaugural Cricket Australia ‘Premier Cricket Club of the Year Award’ in 2016-17. Scott isn’t just a big picture person; he has a great capacity for hard work, never walks past a broom without picking it up and putting it to work and through that example, encourages others to do the same.

Perhaps Scott’s biggest legacy will be the enduring relationships he’s established with our major sponsors. Whether it’s Canterbury Bankstown City Council, Bankstown Sports Club, Revesby Worker’s Club or the different levels of cricket administration, these relationships have been crucial to past successes and will underpin our future development as a club.

To steal a line that’s popular at present “how good is it to…”

• have played your junior cricket in the BDCA (with the South Bankstown Club)

• have played AW Green Shield for Bankstown DCC and captained the winning side in 1982-83

• have captained NSW Under 16 in 1983-84

• have represented NSW Schoolboys at Cricket, Soccer and Rugby Union in the same year

• have won a 1st Grade Premiership with the Bulldogs, scoring a match winning century in the final

• be awarded the Benaud Medal as ‘Player of the Belvidere Cup Final’

• serve as a Committeeman for over two decades

• lead the c lub as President for one and a half decades

• drive change in a way that unites not divides your fellow volunteers

• enjoy a successful business career including earning an MBA and… remain the same decent, smart, and down to earth bloke that started the journey. Thanks Shrub.

Meegan Grant

Meegan was a huge support in ensuring we provided lunches and afternoon teas in a COVIDSAFE manner. She designed a process to provide individual meals; bought the food, packed the food and served the food. Pretty much every match day during season 2020-21. In between times, she worked a full-time job and acted as Club Treasurer! A gem.

Eris and Margaret Dignam

Margaret and Eris continued their tradition of selfless support for the Club from canteen duty, practice co-ordination, club uniforms and assisting with banking. Eris was his usual busy self, always doublechecking details to ensure things don’t are done right and on time. Margaret was a tower of strength during the representative matches when her calm manner and capacity for hard work kept the hungry and thirsty customers moving at the front of the canteen queue.

Brian Freedman

Brian finalised another successful Uganda container load of equipment in January; this project literally has a life of its own these days but it’s also fair to say Brian remains the inspiration for its success. Brian was a huge help during the COVID affected pre-season, always on hand to open the indoor centre when training sessions had to be split across different timetables due to number restrictions. He singlehandily managed the set-up of the 4-day Sheffield Shield match in March and pretty much slept at the ground for a week to enable the bump-

in for the Marsh Cup final that was staged at short notice in the ‘unusual’ April timeslot. Admired from the upper echelons of the game’s administration to local junior associations, women’s cricket, umpires etc, Brian remains our moral compass, our keeper of traditions, our hardest worker… the best of the best.

David Clifton

David is an amazing volunteer. His photography, social media posts and live streaming are of themselves a huge effort but, just for good measure, David also manages our successful Disability Cricket program. This is our 70th Annual Report; it is the 16th in succession that David has produced and there’s no doubt it remains the gold standard across premier cricket clubs and indeed amateur sporting clubs nationally.

Geoff Price

Pricey completed his 10th season as 1st Grade scorer, helped Eris with practice co-ordination and Brian with Uganda collections and packing. Thanks Geoff, we appreciate everything you do to support the Club. Thanks also to Michelle Price for helping in the canteen, especially for major matches when things can get ‘crazy busy’.

SPONSORS and SUPPORTERS

Bankstown Sports Club suffered a severe hit to trade in 2020 caused by COVID related closures but through the tireless efforts of staff all levels, operations have rebounded well. We thank Chairman John Murray and CEO Mark Condi and his management

team for their on-going support. BSC continues to support local charities and its 46 sporting clubs. We are always grateful for the guidance we get from Marie Kanaan and Shannon Harley from the Community and Sport team.

uGanda communitY project

Because of the uncertainties due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we originally planned not to make a shipment to the Uganda Cricket Association in 2020 but undertake a strong collection period. However, the remarkable support of this program by Bankstown Sports Club enabled us to dispatch a container late in 2020.

As well as the normal contents this shipment contained a slightly unusual donation of school uniforms. When the Marton School at Engadine offered us approximately 400 of each summer, winter and sports uniforms we enquired of the UCA if they could use them and were delighted with their immediate response that they would be pleased to receive them and distribute them to

underprivileged schools and orphanages.

For a scheme that started in 2005 with the intention of shipping one container, the fact that we will ship container number 15 later this year is truly remarkable. The only publicity we use is word of mouth and some of our donors are contributing multiple times. Cricket clothing now makes up a significant part of our shipments and it is not unusual to see teams all over Uganda decked out in uniforms once regularly seen around Sydney.

It is very gratifying to see the difference this project is making to the development of cricket in Uganda with a 600% increase in participation credited to having the available equipment. Even

more importantly it is gratifying to see the difference it is making to peoples lives, described by past chairman of the Ugandan Cricket Association Bashir Badu as life changing.

It is very expensive to ship containers to land locked Uganda and we could not run this scheme without the fabulous support of the Bankstown Sports Club. Costing as much as $14,000 for a 40 foot container the Sporties have met the shipping cost of every consignment and we owe a huge thank you to their board and management. We are fortunate to have the Sports Club as part of our community.

“This program has seen a 600% increase in player participation in Uganda”

all abilities cricket proGram

At our first session back in over a year, Matt Brown sends his pace attack down to Gareth Donohue, while Matt Beer prepares to bowl.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 really savaged our All Abilities program (as it did with all aspects of life world-wide)... with play suspended from January 2020 until 1st May, 2021. After 14 months away from the game, our players returned with passion and commitment - there was such a fun atmosphere as they got into stride very quickly indeed.

It was as if we’d had just a two-week break for many players - they were that good so quickly.

The players appreciated the addition of a new volunteer coach - local grade women’s cricketer Angie Genford - who would have completed her Level 2 accreditation by the time this report is printed.

The All Abilities Cricket Program is a partnership between Recreation, Sports and Aquatics Club (RSAC) and BDCC. It provides cricketers with a disability - of any ability - the opportunity to train for and play cricket to the highest elite level (Special Olympics or NSW Intellectual Disability Cricket) or solely for fun and especially for socialising with other sportspeople.

david cliFton and darren Mclean

Since its inception, Bankstown Sports Club has always supported this program and continues to demonstrate its dedication to helping those in need in our communities.

Running all year round - every second Sunday from 9am to

11am - our program provides a continuity not possible in other cricket programs.

We are always grateful for the great coaching support we get from the parents and carers such as Ian Russell, Bruce Andrews, Michael Katzakis and Manjit

Dhupar. Without you all, this program simply could not function to the standard it does - the players and the club thank you sincerely.

Amanda Sivier about to bowl after Brianna Russell, while Ed Smith sends his wily spin down to Brian Finacato.

Coach Ian Russell (centre) keeps the action flowing, as Mark Bekir comes in to bowl.

obituaries

We oFFer our sincere condolences to all MeMBers WHo Have lost loved ones in tHe Past Year

Peter Power (1932 – 2021)

It is with great sadness that we pass on the news that Peter Power, a stalwart of the Club’s early years, has passed away aged 89 years. Peter Power played with the Club in our inaugural season, 1951/52, and continued to play lower grades until 1959/60. Outside of cricket, Peter built a meritorious career with NSW Police. Peter’s crowning achievement for the Bulldogs was as our first ever Premiership winning Captain, leading the 1953/54 Poidevin Gray Shield side that included former NSW and Australia representative Grahame Thomas.

Peter was known as a talented all-rounder who gave his all every time he donned the Royal Blue and White. In 1951/52 the Annual Report records the following profile “Peter’s attacking Captaincy was instrumental in the sides success; he led by example whether batting, bowling or through his brilliant fielding”. Underlining Peter’s ability with bat and ball was the fact he represented NSW in Baseball.

Peter continued his engagement with the club throughout his life and was a familiar face at Annual General Meetings until ill health prevented him from attending.

It was with enormous sadness that the Bulldog Family shared the news that Lisa Freedman, wife of Bulldog 1st Grade Cap number 170 Mark Freedman, passed away in December 2020.

A dedicated public educator, Lisa became Principal of Tathra Public School in 2014 and was a well-known and highly respected member of the close-knit South Coast community.

Lisa’s legacy will live through her amazing daughters Allara and Lia and the positive influence she had on so many students, teachers, and families during her thirty years as a public educator. Her positive approach to life was never more evident than in recent years following her cancer diagnosis as she zestfully went about enjoying life to the full.

Lisa was a Vice President and patrolling member of the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club and a driving force behind the highly successful ‘Tathra Wharf to Waves’ swimming carnival. Many Bulldog players, volunteers and supporters will remember Lisa’s friendly face and vivacious personality, certain to brighten up any room.

The Club places on record its deepest condolences to Husband Mark, Daughters Allara and Lia, Mother Helen and Brother Geoff along with BDCC Life Members Brian Freedman OAM and David Freedman.

Lisa Freedman with Life Member Brian Freedman and husband Mark Freedman (1st grade cap #170)

John Burns

The Club was deeply saddened with the passing in November 2020 of John Burns, father of Bulldog 1st Grade players Daniel Burns (Cap 231) and Tim Burns (Cap 254) following a long battle with cancer.

Along with wife Maryann, John was a keen supporter of Daniel and Tim at the Bankstown District Junior Association and during their careers at BDCC. John always busied himself preparing drinks for players and running covers on and off when rain affected play, as well as providing plenty of vocal support when the Dogs needed encouragement. Daniel’s current 2nd grade skipper Tony Clark paid a heartfelt tribute to John and led a minute silence for both sides prior to play at Raby Oval. The Club offers its heartfelt condolences to Maryann, Hannah, Daniel, Tim and the extended Burns family.

club Grounds and facilities

The Club was again lucky to have access to high quality on field and off field facilities that are the envy of all Premier Grade Clubs.

Memorial Oval supported representative matches Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup LO and hosted the Kingsgrove Sports T20 Cup Final and the NSW Women’s Premier Grade Final as well as a full season of Men’s and Women’s Premier Grade matches.

Warwick Starr headed the team until his retirement in March following a hand operation. Warwick took over at Memorial Oval from Tom Parker in 1996. During that time Warwick has prepared wickets for visiting international teams, Sheffield Shield, Limited Overs and T20 matches not to mention over 10 Belvidere Cup finals. He has won the coveted Ground of the Year Award on numerous occasions and consistently received the highest accolades from professional match officials and team captains. As a Club we are indebted to Warwick for the diligence he has shown towards preparing Memorial Oval no matter whether it was a high-

profile representative match or a grade fixture. We wish Warwick and Colleen all the best in retirement and look forward to catching up when they venture back down to the big smoke!

Following Warwick’s retirement, Nick Mamolis stepped into the role at short notice and performed admirably, gaining very positive feedback from match officials and players following the Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup matches. Warwick has been instrumental in Nick’s career development and the changeover has been seamless. We are hopeful Nick will be appointed permanently to the role as we have a gold class working relationship and believe strongly that Nick has the capacity to perform in the top echelon of curators.

Grahame Thomas Oval is a not an enclosed ground and its location within a high-density housing area means it gets a huge amount of recreational use. Despite this constraint, Warwick and Nick and the team always ensure that grade training facilities and match wickets at GT Oval are of the highest order. Nick has taken on board the challenge of getting more

consistent quality practice wickets at GT Oval in 202122 and has already commenced repair work to ensure he has good grass coverage to work with when spring arrives.

The Kelso Park North square has only been in place for two seasons and experienced some issues with soil levels. Former Memorial Oval and SCG Curator Tom Parker kindly provided Nick with some feedback on how to remediate the issues and we are very hopeful Kelso North will start to hit its straps in 2021-22.

The Club formally places on record its genuine thanks to Senior Curators Warwick Starr and Nick Mamolis, and team members Mitch Gardner, Darryl Thatcher and Neville Rae. We appreciate the efforts of this group very much and enjoy the friendly working relationship we’ve established over many years. Special thanks also to senior managers Nathan Watson and Brett Luth for their guidance and support, especially with the hastily organised Sheffield Shield and Marsh Cup representative matches.

This year marked the 39th year of this great competition. The winner is decided by each of the five grades awarding 3, 2 and 1 point(s) to the best contributors in each grade where all grades play.

A batting bonus point can be earnt for scoring 50 with a further point for every 25 thereafter. Bowlers and wicketkeepers earn a bonus point for taking three wickets or dismissals with an additional point awarded for each further wicket and each team decides a fielding point for each match.

After15 rounds the top five were…

Equal 5th place on 22 points

Nathan McAndrew

Macca missed a third of our season due to his commitments to Sydney Thunder but still finished in the top five. An absolute leader and a champion on and off the field, his move to Adelaide next season will give him the opportunity to play a lot more first class cricket and he can be assured we will all be cheering for him from afar.

Jake Cormack

Jake returned this season after some time off and was in terrific form from ball one. 737 runs @43.35 with two centuries is a season of which he should be very satisfied.

4th place on 23 points

Basit Ali

In his second season with the club Basit had a cracker season with 27 wickets at the miserly average of 11.07

3rd place on 24 points

Brady Polkinghorne

Using his height to advantage together with the ability to bowl straight and a good work ethic was the mix for Brady to achieve the excellent season figures of 26 wickets @ 9.53

bankstown sports club joint winners on 29 points players of the Year 2020/2021

Ben Taylor and Niran Wijewardene

Ben Taylor

Pipped on the post by Dan Solway and Alex Kouventaris over the last two seasons BT had another battle on his hands this year with Niran but his 49 wickets at 19.71 and 316 runs @ 24.31 could not be denied. It is pleasing to note that this most prestigious award is shared by two of the most popular and respected members of the club. Heartiest congratulations Ben for another great season.

Niran Wijewardene

What a story, 4th grade last season, 3rd grade for the early part of this season and promoted to 2nd grade for the last 7 matches where he scored 329 runs @ 65.8 to go with his 551 runs in all grades @ 50.9. Will undoubtedly be pushing for 1st grade next season and there is no reason why he will not achieve this goal. Extremely well done, Wije.

1st grade T20 PREMIERS

Firstly, I want to say a huge thank you to everyone that has been involved in getting this season up and running. The committee, the volunteers, the SCA have all done an outstanding job of allowing so much cricket to be played given the challenging circumstances that were faced. While training and games may have been played in a different way this year, the players and coaches got on with the job and we saw some fantastic results on the park.

This year saw the club claim its inaugural First Grade T20 championship – which was a huge achievement. As far as campaigns go, to win a premiership, we simply could not have asked for a better performance. The season was faced with challenges right from the start with modified training and with players unavailable throughout the season, yet the team adapted so well. Everyone performed their different roles to such high standards throughout the season and it truly was a team effort. In the batting group, Nick and Zeeshaan were getting us off to such fast starts then Jake and Brownie used their experience through the middle overs, before Noddy would close out the innings with such a high strike rate.

Then the bowling group as a collective was impeccable. BT led the way, with his ability to shut the board down while taking wickets, and often worked in tandem with Ben Le Bas. There truly were not many teams who were able to handle our spin through the middle overs. The quicks also did a great job with Macca showing his class when available, as well as the young quicks in adjusting to their roles each and every game and doing a great job. Also, a special mention must go to Birdy - while not playing as much cricket as he has done

previously - the importance of his role and his execution was first class. His experience around the group and the work he puts in with Brad and Liam at training has been invaluable.

Finally, to Crowy, Bourney and Pols - your effort, commitment, and attitude to the group has been second to none, and it is great to see hard work rewarded with a flag. To Crowy, the group cannot thank you enough for all your years as head coach, your passion for the club and for the group is amazing and has been for a very long time. In your time as head coach to have won every major first grade flag and a club championship, truly reflects and is deserving of your passion – well done!

Overall, to win a premiership is extremely hard to do and to do so in what was a challenging year and to do so undefeated sums up what a tight knit and extremely talented group we have at this club. We can be so proud of this achievement for many years to come and thank you again to everyone that has been a part of making this fantastic achievement possible.

PLEASE NOTE: All

2nd grade

First of all I’d like to congratulate the whole club for another successful season as there are many clubs in Sydney who would be very happy with Top 10 in Club Champions, their First Grade side winning a Twenty20 Premiership as well as making finals again in the One Day Competition, 2nd and 3rd Grade playing finals Cricket again and their PG side unluckily missing a chance to play finals due to rain – but most of all, just competing week in week out with so many issues at all levels to overcome due to COVID-19, is an outstanding achievement. Everyone played their part again as best they could from the Committee to the Coaches to the players in achieving another successful Premier Cricket Season. Again, there is a lot to celebrate.

I would like to congratulate Daniel and the 1st grade team on their hugely successful season in white ball cricket – Sols I’m not sure if you remember what I said in last season’s report… “that silverware was just around the corner with such a talented group of players and they had now found a leader who can take the team to another level” – well, a huge congratulations and the boys did it. I know the whole club felt part of 1st Grade team throughout the Twenty20winning journey and I’m sure that the success will be remembered for a long time for those that played and it will motivate everyone at the club for years to come. Also, a special mention to Alex and his 3rd grade team for another outstanding year in again playing finals cricket.

Now about the 2nd Grade 2020/2021 season.

To all of the 22 guys that represented 2nd grade this season congratulations on another fantastic year, we fought hard to play finals cricket again after an indifferent start – but a good win in round 11 against Sydney showed me we were heading in the right direction to finish well and make a run at the finals. But history will show the worst rain seen in years hit Sydney for a week before the Quarter Final weekend and our season was over without a ball being bowled in anger. In my mind we had Wests covered and who knows what could have happened from there. But it was not meant to be and after 2 days watching it rain we finished 5th. From there after an even finals series Minor Premiers Manly - who had an outstanding season finishing on 83 points - won the Albert Cup in a well-fought out final against St George at Manly Oval.

Within 3 seasons this group has gone from 15th in 2018 to 4th in 2019, Premiers in 2020 and 5th in 2021 – which is a great achievement and something to all be proud of. Again we had the luxury of great experience within the group to choose from each week in Dan Nicotra, Matt Bursa, Mitch Hinds, Joel Brockley, Daniel Burns (who was a welcome return to the club from South Australia) and Gurinder Hara who had come across from Blacktown always

leading from the front and combine that with the improving class of Mansuk, Justin, Cameron, Ryan, Ethan, Dane and Ben that have been in the team for some time now, we have a playing roster any club would kill for. The improvement of our younger group this season was exciting as they are the future of our club and I would like at this time to congratulate Dane, Mansuk and Ethan for making their 1st Grade Twenty20 debuts - which was well deserved. We also had Blake, Koby and Modacer come from 3rd Grade and showed they are ready for the step-up next season. Alex, Muhammad, Matthew and Basit proved they are 2nd Grade cricketers at any other club in Sydney and I’m sure will be very important to the team moving forward.

Also, a special mention has to go to Niran Wijewardene who with 329 runs @65 was the turning point of our season. Wij came into the team in round 10 scoring 66 in his first game and was a star from that point on as he gave everyone in the team a sense of confidence we were missing. He was a pleasure to have in the team, admired by all his teammates and showed if you put the hard work in, it does pay off in the end. Congratulations Niran on your performances in 2020/2021 and look forward to watching your progress in the coming season.

Some individual statistics to come out of this season that I thought were important to mention:

Our leading batsmen were: Mansuk 507 runs h/s 102 @ 39 was in another class after Christmas, Joel 437 runs h/s 107 @ 33 again got us off to great starts again and we are always a better team when we have Mitch Hinds at No 3 and again, he showed how important he is to us scoring 351 h/s 102 @ 51 well done again Mitch another wonderful season and thanks for all your support throughout a long year. I am also looking forward to seeing Justin and Ethan back after injury and work respectively as they started the season so well with big runs and it looks promising from both.

Our bowling was shared around nicely with everyone doing their job week in week out with myself 21, Ryan C 17, Gurinder 17, Matt B 15, Dane and Daniel 11 wickets each our main bowling group but we had Blake, Mahammad, Ben and Basit also contributing in important games. Special mention must go to Basit Ali who supported us both on and off the field. He had a great season with 25 wickets @ 10 in all grades and was my most improved cricketer in the club.

Also, a special mention to Middo on his contribution to the side with 26 dismissals which included some outstanding snares – his keeping after Christmas was of the highest level.

To be successful is not all about the 11 players that take the field each week, it is a collective achievement from some fantastic people and Bankstown DCC has plenty of them. To our Coach Gary Growfoot and his staff James, Aaron, Ray, Alan, Mick Poulson and all the

helpers at training including Geoff, Eris and Kash, it was a long and at times tough season for you all to navigate through – so thank you for your dedication to the cause as there is always a quality session for the players week in week out to help them improve.

Special mention to James, Ron and Gary for being our support staff each week on game day, we could not have been as successful as we have been without you all being involved.

To James Bourne, you know how much I respect you, the whole team thanks you for all you have done for us and you will be missed greatly.

I would like to congratulate Dean and my fellow Captains for a job well done and thank them once again for their friendship and support in 2020/2021.

To all our sponsors thank you for all your ongoing support, without it we do not get to do what we all love doing so much.

To Scott, Brian, Marty and all the committee plus the ground staff at both

Bankstown and Kelso Ovals and also the wonderful canteen ladies with the only afternoon teas in Sydney Grade Cricket - thank you so much on behalf of the 2nd Grade team for all your efforts and support over 2020/2021 season and congratulations to you all for an outstanding year.

In closing: Most players over the last 3 seasons have bought into the culture I have tried to bring to this team. It may not have suited everyone and for that I’m truly sorry - especially for those where it has affected their love for the game - but ultimately it is your own results on the field that you

will be judged on. It has been a pleasure to be your Captain over that time as you are all such a mature and talented group of young men and I hope we can do it again next season.

Again I would like to thank my wife Jodie and all my family for their support as you have all been part of another wonderful season.

Last but not least I want to wish all involved at Bankstown DCC a safe offseason and look forward to whatever lies ahead for us all.

Regards Tony Clark

3rd grade

The 2020/21 3rd Grade season was a rollercoaster that nobody wanted to end. With an unclear start date, everyone turned up each week during pre-season to ensure we carried on last season’s run. After a disappointing end with us not being able to play the quarter final last year due to Covid, we all knew where we wanted to be in March. Special mentions go out to the entire coaching staff, the committee, parents, volunteers and to all the players. Everyone’s efforts played a massive role in the success Bankstown had this year.

From round one it was evident that everyone had a very positive attitude to the upcoming season. With a strong 2019/20 season behind us, 3rd grade had a tight and unique bond that gave everyone confidence going forward created by prior success lead by Iain Ridley and Matthew Dedes. I would also like to acknowledge Dean Magee. The effort and commitment Dean puts in each week to not only 3rd grade but towards the whole club is greatly appreciated. I would like to personally thank Dean for the trust and support he has given me over the years, for which I’ll be forever grateful.

I would like to extend special mentions to Gary Crowfoot, James Bourne, Brian Freedman and Marty Klumpp for their tireless efforts week in and week out. I would also like to thank Scott Grant and the management committee for all your hard work behind the scenes. To Geoff Price and Eris Dignam, the effort and commitment you two provide every week, every season is nothing short of amazing and for that, the club thanks you both. The 2020/21 season for 3rd Grade showed a determined group of young men had one goal, and that was to play finals cricket. After missing out the season before due to Covid, nothing was getting in our way. This was proven by us making the semi finals in a challenging but very rewarding season.

Every individual who played a game in 3rd Grade should be proud of what they achieved and everyone played a massive role in the success that our team had this year, whether it was Niran Wijewardene and Anthony Melynk scoring runs for fun, making difficult wickets look easy, through to Basit Ali, Koby Layton and Rhys Ward taking bags full of wickets.

Even after a tough loss in the semis, everyone walked away from that game with their heads held high, knowing we did our best. The most pleasing part about the season was the bond built between the boys and regardless of the result, we always walked on and off the field knowing we were playing for each other. That’s what made this team so special and successful. I can safely say that this season has been by far one of my most challenging but rewarding seasons. It was an absolute pleasure to lead and play alongside all of you. Many memories were made over the season and I can’t wait to do it all again.

As my good friend Matthew Dedes once said, “There will always be more to life than cricket, but spending Saturdays with your best mates will always be hard to beat.”

4th grade

To say the 2020/21 season was a frustrating one would be an understatement. After a delayed start to the season, 4th Grade started with a bang, a bonus point win over Penrith promised so much, however as a team we were unable to put this level of performance consistently week in week out.

A devastating loss to Parramatta in round 9 summed up our season, needing 12 runs to win and 5 wickets down, we managed to lose by 1 run, followed up by a loss on the 3rd last ball against Sydney, combined with a 2-day washout, where all but 1 other game was able to get a result. We were left wondering if small results going a different way could have changed the course of the season. When no one scores above 200 runs in the season it makes it very difficult to be a consistently successful side.

There were positives throughout the season, a strong win against eventual champions Sutherland before Christmas, with Brady Polkinghorne and Hayden Barrett leading the way with the ball - as they so often did during the season in bowling us to victory.

We also had some success towards the end of the season, beating then firstplaced side Sydney Uni in a match they expected to comfortably win, was a great achievement. Tom Ramage stepping up to 4th grade in style with 91 against the best bowling attack in the competition, and everyone contributing with the ball lead to a memorable victory and showing that on our day we could compete with any team in the competition.

Brady was outstanding this season with 21 wickets in only 8 games of 4th grade, showing that he is easily one of the better bowlers in the competition and had learnt how to get batsmen out in various conditions.

It was also great to see many players who began the season in 4th grade push up through the grades, with Rahid Alam, Ryan Freeman and in particular Anthony Melnyk all playing key parts in 3rd Grades’ finals run.

A special thank you to Daniel Slane, driving down from Newcastle throughout the season and consistently performing with the bat and ball, showing that he still has the ability to play much higher grades when soccer allows.

In a difficult season, the efforts of the committee and coaches in getting us on the field was greatly appreciated by all players. Dean Magee doesn’t get the credit he deserves, finding 55 fit and available players was very challenging throughout the season, and the efforts and endless phone calls he has each week is greatly appreciated by all captains.

Lastly I want to take the opportunity to thank our two coaches Gary Crowfoot and James Bourne. Although their roles are changing in the future, they have been immense assets to the club and to myself. Bourney has been a great mentor from when I started at the club, as some of my best personal performances were in sides that he played in, he always made cricket seem easier and less stressful when he was in the lineup. The support he has provided since joining the coaching staff has been a massive asset. Gary has been the only head coach I’ve had at Bankstown, and the past decade of success could not have been possible without him and the endless effort he puts in on and off the field 12 months a year. Two Green Shields, One Poidevin-Gray, Two Limited Overs Cups, a T20 Premiership, a 2nd Grade Premiership, a Belvidere Cup and a Club Championship is an enviable legacy. He also helped me become a better cricketer with bat and ball than I ever thought possible, and for that I will be forever thankful.

I look forward to seeing as many players as possible back at the club next year, and pushing for another successful Bulldogs season.

With the year that was 2020, we were incredibly fortunate as a club and sport, that the 2020/21 season was able to go ahead. The club excelled in its approach to making sure we had a proper pre-season and season, with as little friction from the pandemic as possible.

5th grade

With a young and ever-changing side, it was difficult to consistently put results on the board. Starting with the season with six debutants from the Green Shield squad against some very good 5th Grade sides proved to be a baptism of fire. The boys fought valiantly for the first few rounds but were outsmarted by more experienced players. Unfortunately, we did not register a win in the first 5 rounds, although we came extremely close a couple of times. I hope they all learned from the experiences and bring them to situations in the future.

We were able to bring some more experience with the return of players from HSC exams and in higher grades, managing to string together 4 wins out of 5 games either side of Christmas and another Covid breakout. Unfortunately, a couple of losses and a washout to finish the season left us lingering in the bottom half of the table, lower than I believe our performances and efforts warranted.

There were many breakout performances and players this year. Subtain Shahid’s two magnificent centuries in a season, a feat rarely achieved in 5th Grade, will surely see him gain the confidence and self-belief to rise through the grades. Subtain’s partnership with Lachlan Johnson, who raised his bat with a fifty against Sydney saw us chase down 250 – also rarely seen in 5th Grade. Charlie Fitzjohn, whose efforts week in, week out, saw him lead the wicket-taking tally for the competition for most of the season and also added a fine half century early in the season. Harjapan Singh’s fivefor at the death saw us beat Randwick-Petersham in a nail-biter. Sanjiv Weerasigham and Rohin Patel’s courageous partnership chasing down Fairfield on a difficult wicket in difficult circumstances – which ws paired with Mudassir Ejaz’s five wicket haul in the same game.

I want to thank and congratulate Prash, for taking the captaincy reins for the last two games of the season. I am sure there will be more opportunity to lead in the future if he wants it.

I want to thank every parent who helped our side throughout the season. Every little bit was hugely appreciated. With a group of such young players, it sometimes feels like herding cats setting up the field, packing covers, etc. Without the parents, I am not sure if we would have been ready to take the field every week.

I want to thank Kash Patel, who made my life as captain as easy as possible, handling scoring and administration issues I would not have been able to control or fix. Thank you again.

A huge thank you to Dean Magee who, as Chairman of Selectors, took a lot of weight off my shoulders with selections and helping manage my team each week. He kept me level-headed with decisions when I really wanted to pick 15 players every week.

Gary Crowfoot and James Bourne were instrumental in our succes this season. I cannot thank them enough for their efforts and dedication to each individual player. Both have been pivotal in creating our exceptional club culture. As a club and personally, we are going to miss Bourney and wish him the best in future. His positivity, motivation and insight have benefitted every player in the club, and for that I want to say thank you.

Thank you to Eris Dignam and Geoff Price for their efforts at training every week and helping us set up for home games at Grahame Thomas Oval. Also thank you to Marty Klumpp, Brian Freedman and the committee for their selfless work running the club as it is very much appreciated.

I also must congratulate – of the 28 players that we had in 5th Grade – every single player conducted themselves and played within the Spirit of Cricket. Not a game went by without the umpires, opposition or even opposition parents and scorers, approaching me and commending our side’s approach to the game. It is a credit to the club and culture that has been built that we consistently bring players who contribute as custodians of the sport.

It has been an absolute pleasure captaining 5th Grade this year. I hope the boys enjoyed it as much as I did. Bring on next season.

Handunneththi,

Having a less than ideal pre-season due to the Covid-19 outbreak and regulations imposed resulted in the main group of players training separately, that didn’t stop the squad being primed and ready for a successful campaign after bowing out last season in the Thunder Conference Semi Finals. The matches in the Thunder Conference always ebbs and flows, tough cricket with nail-biting endings and this season was every bit of it.

We kicked off the season with a 27-run home T20 win against Campbelltown. After winning the toss and electing to bat, we wanted to put the sword to the Ghosts and make our presence felt. Our openers Mansukh Singh 35 from 29 and Zeeshaan Ahmed 79 off 45 did that with an opening stand of 96 from only 10 overs. Ethan Debono’s power hitting 23 off just 14 balls laid the platform to set a nice total of 174 after 20 overs. The Ghosts were vanquished for 147 with Blake Pearson 2-30, skipper Liam Marshall 2/18 and Koby Layton 2/22. It was a fine all-round effort from the bowlers.

Round 2 we were on the road to Hawkesbury and losing the toss and bowling first we able to bowl them out for 169 off 42 overs. Liam Marshall lead from the front with figures of 4/22, Brad Simpson claimed two of the top 3 Hawks with sheer pace, Blake Pearson and Ryan Clark were both hard to put away and bowled great together during the middle overs. In reply, we lost 2 wickets in the first over then 4/20 and looked to be in troubled waters but to the rescue came Modacer Momandi 65 and Matt Simpson 73no with grit and determination to steer us to victory with 10 overs remaining.

Next round we suffered our first defeat of the season to Sydney Uni in the tightest of matches. Our openers Zeeshaan Ahmed and Mansukh Singh put on a healthy 56 for the opening stand before Zeeshaan was out for 29, Mansukh was caught for 30 with the score on 70 before Modacer Momandi capped a great weekend with a brilliant 83 in support of Matt Simpson who carried his bat with 82no. Ethan Debono finished our innings off with 24 from just 12 balls to reach a very healthy 4-264 off 50 overs. However, Sydney Uni’s Ben Mitchell got in the way with a magnificent 130no off 118 balls which got the students home with 3 balls to spare. The pick of our bowlers were Blake Pearson 2/43 and Brad Simpson 2/55.

The side took on the Parramatta at home and what a thriller it was. We won the toss and elected to bat first in great conditions and posted 304 runs. The confidence was high for a victory, but Parramatta almost proved too slippery with 302. Our top order clicked straight into top gear. Mansukh Singh hammered the ball from the outset and was a delight to behold in full flight with 72 off 82 with nine boundaries and two sensational sixes. Zeeshaan Ahmed scored 29. However, the day belonged to a rampaging Ethan De Bono who was at his dynamic best with a superlative 126 from 101 balls. De Bono batted for 105 minutes in an innings he will always remember. Matt Simpson compiled 36 and ran beautifully between the wickets with Ethan. This was crucial as the game developed. The Bulldogs were very confident with 300 plus in the bank and Liam Marshall added to that with his usual breakthrough claiming 3 wickets along with Blake Pearson chimed in with three poles and Ryan Clark with 2 wickets, however Parramatta fought valiantly, and it came down to the last over as Parramatta needed 28, then 4 off the last ball in a memorable victory!

Our last round game we defeated the Fairfield-Liverpool Lions convincingly at home. The Lions never really took the initiative against our fired-up attack. They battled their way to 154, which was well short of a competitive total. Very good early work by Liam Marshall silenced the Lions as he claimed 1/9 from an immaculate 5-over spell. Brad Simpson claimed 2/15, Ryan Clark went wicketless with his extremely accurate offies he conceded a meagre 24 runs to apply the pressure required to stall the FairfieldLiverpool innings – totally frustrating the Lions and they never really recovered.

Rhys Ward claimed 1/27 from 6 useful overs whilst enthusiastic Koby Layton was in superb form and hunted down the Lions with 3/46 in a productive 9-over spell was a masterly effort. A special mention to Zeeshaan Ahmed who chimed in with 1/6 which excited the crowd. Matt Simpson had a great day behind the stumps with 3 smart catches and 2 lightning-like stumpings. In reply, Mansukh Singh got the Bulldogs off to a flier with a dashing 37 at the top of the order hammering 6 sizzling boundaries. Skipper Liam Marshall is renowned for his bowling but guided his team to victory with the willow. When the team needed him most, he took control and guided them to 155 with a brilliant 29 not out. Matt Simpson completed a wonderful weekend with a very responsible 28 whilst in form Modacer Momandi hammered 25 useful runs.

Making the semi-finals for the 3rd straight year is a nice achievement, however our match against Campbelltown-Camden was washed out and due to us running 4th on the ladder we didn’t progress to the Thunder Conference Final. The whole team was extremely disappointed to end our campaign like this as we all felt we were a huge chance of winning the last game of the comp (Grand Final) but it shows how important winning all your 50 over matches are as they are worth 6 points, where T20 wins are only worth 3 points.

The whole group would like to thank Shane Cormack once again for being our manager, Dave Debono for scoring and even at times when Ethan wasn’t playing and especially to all the volunteers who help during our home games by setting up the ground and having a canteen available. A special mention to Justin Felsch for your continuing support on game day whilst being injured for the whole season, the team really valued your commitment and energy towards the group.

To Matt Simpson, Ryan Clark, Cameron Middleton and Mansukh Singh who all bow out. Thank you for all your efforts in the past couple of years – it’s unfortunate we couldn’t collect any silverware during our time, however you all have left a great platform for the next group of players to come into the squad and continue the success that this team I believe really deserves.

See you all again next year!

green shield

Firstly, I would like to thank Gary Crowfoot and James Bourne for their incredible help this year co-ordinating everything from Covid-safe numbers at the trials to the training sessions leading up to the start of the competition – it is greatly appreciated to have so much assistance in developing the youth of the club.

For the last 4 years Suresh has undeniably been the backbone of the AW Green Shield set-up at this great club along with his partner in crime, Milani. Their tireless work behind the scenes from corralling the parents to sit together, to the massive effort of setting out individual bagged lunches for the boys throughout the Covid period has not gone unnoticed – so thank you for your wonderful contribution.

A special mention to Iain and Nic for the preparation help on match day enabling me to focus on the boys’ roles. The 2020/21 campaign didn’t quite end up the way it was pictured in the lead up to the first round. With the pre-season sessions cut in half due to the ever-changing landscape of the Covid situation, the boys toiled hard to little prevail. We had a couple very close games against Sydney University and Blacktown and couldn’t manage to get over the line – but this was not through lack of hunger. The disappointment on the boys’ faces said it all, especially after the closer games. In saying that we came up against some very strong opposition - some of the quickest bowlers I have seen at this level over my time and some of the more disciplined fielding performances that I have witnessed.

I believe the boys will have learnt many valuable lessons throughout the seven games as different situations would have been put in front of them that many would not have had the opportunity to tackle before i.e. the faster bowlers or the disciplined fielding displays. In the end, the boys pulled together and enjoyed the challenges that had been thrown their way.

Finally, I want the thank the Management Committee for the continued support and for providing what is needed to get the boys on the park.

To all the boys who played in this year’s Green Shield team, I wish you all the best for the off-season and hope you all continue your cricket careers with this wonderful club.

women’s cricket

The Bankstown Sports Women’s Cricket Club 2020-21 season once again proved very successful. However, the club had to cope with COVID-19 global pandemic training and playing requirements although fortunately the season was not materially impacted due to COVID, as well as continuing to focus on player development as the playing strength continued to build. Unfortunately, the weather curtailed 1st Grades season when their elimination final was washed out without a ball being bowled.

The club fielded 4 sides this season being 1st, 3rd Grades and U18 Brewer Shield teams in the Women’s Premier Cricket Competition and U15 Sixers Cricket League as well as contributing players in the Youth Championships representative teams. Congratulations to Ashleigh Gardner on winning the NSW Women’s Premier Cricket

First Grade Player of the Year award for this season & also to Ashleigh Gardner & Jannatul Sumona for being named in the NSW Women’s Premier Cricket First Grade Team of the Year for this season – both outstanding achievements.

There was also a NSW Women’s Premier Cricket First

Grade Team of the Decade announced this season with Laura Wright (WK), Rhiannon Dick, Sarah Aley and Emma Newman selected in this team.

We are grateful to these players for their commitment, support & obviously performances over the past 10 years and congratulate these players for being recognised by being selected in the team.

Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, most of the elite and representative teams were either not held this season or had very limited matches – hopefully these will return next season. Towards the end of this season there was a series of under-age matches played where Tahlia Dunne & Angelina Genford

represented NSW Metro U16 and U19 in matches against South Australia and Victoria.

Also, this season our club had 8 junior players selected in Academy squads from U15 through to the U19 age groups.

We continue to be extremely proud to have so many younger players in our club selected in these squads and are very pleased that the talents of so many of our younger players continue to be recognised outside our club.

Our thanks to Emma Newman & Paul Stathis for their work in coaching and managing the junior teams as well as parents who also contributed to running these teams. Our 1st and 3rd Grades,

as well as the Brewer Shield team, were also filled mainly with players who have made their way through our junior ranks over recent seasons which is confirmation that the Player Pathway in place within our club is allowing junior players the opportunity to develop their cricketing skills and giving them opportunities to play at higher levels.

In regard to player development, special acknowledgement to the Club’s Coaching team led by dedicated Club Coach Sarah Aley –known to most of us as “Mitsy” – who also continued to play in the 1st Grade team. We have been privileged to have an exInternational, National League & WBBL player as our Club Coach. Coaching assistants including Club Legend Therese Stewart and Laura Wright, Gary Crowfoot and Chris

Ridley from the Bankstown District Cricket Club also contributed significantly throughout the season as did Chloe Butler who coached the SCL team in the Spring competition and parent coaches including Gus Fernando, Brendan Dunne, Paul Stathis, David Gibson, Stephen Peters and Venkatesh Thirupathy who shared their expertise at training or on game day.

The club also acknowledges the contributions of parents and players including Virginia Errington, Alanna Yates, Brianna Fraser and Stephen Peters who managed teams so well and to our brilliant 1st Grade scorer Jennifer Campbell who this season took over from Kerrie Dick.

Volunteers are such an integral part of any club and we are extremely fortunate to have so many committed

volunteers within our club. To this end our thanks to Virginia Errington who stepped into the role of Club Secretary this season having taken over from Justin Newman who had filled the role for numerous seasons. Virginia was meticulous in all the meetings held (and there were many this season due to both COVID and the number of new committee members) as well as handling all the correspondence and being the primary club contact point. Our appreciation also to Gus Fernando who stepped into the Vice-President role this season taking over from Gary Penman who had filled this role for even longer than Justin had been Secretary. Gus also assumed the role of Head of the Cricket Operations Committee and Head of Selectors during the season which was much appreciated. Thank You also

to Meegan Smith-Grant who once again filled the role of Club Treasurer handling all our income & expenditure meticulously. Finally, a special call out to Rose Whelan for not just maintaining supply of our current playing and training clothing, however, also researching for a potential full clothing refresh hopefully next season.

Our club’s social media covering the club’s publicity, website & facebook pages was operated extremely effectively by Emma Newman, Rose and Alice Whelan. Social media continues to be a crucial part in everyone being kept up-to-date on club activities. The publicity not only enhances the brand of our club, it also enhances the positioning of female cricket in our area.

Our thanks to all members of the club’s Management Committee for their untiring efforts this season in enabling the club to operate so smoothly once again this season especially given the many uncertainties and additional administration requirements - everyone rolled up their sleeves and got on with it!

Unfortunately this season we had insufficient registrations to be able to field a 2nd Grade team – the club’s Management Committee is working hard to recruit additional players for next season with the aim of once again being able to nominate 4 teams in the NSW Women’s Premier Cricket Competition being a team in each of 1st, 2nd & 3rd Grade and Brewer Shield. Once again this season a number of players from our club also achieved selections

including playing in the WNCL and WBBL06 competitions. Congratulations to Sarah Aley, Ashleigh Gardner, Erin Burns, Maddie Penna, Katie Mack and Erica Kershaw who all played at the 1st Class level this season with Ashleigh also being a regular member of the Australia Women’s Team. Our congratulations and thanks to Sarah Aley (“Mitsy”) for your service to NSW & Australia cricket following your retirement from 1st class cricket this season.

Our club also congratulates the Bankstown Men’s Cricket Club on another successful season - we are very appreciative of the continued support we receive from the Men’s Club –we are extremely fortunate to be associated with such a wonderful Men’s Club.
