As we all know, in the early days of March 2020 the global pandemic Coronavirus hit. The remainder of the season was cancelled while we were enjoying a positive season on and off the field. We were leading the Club Championship and with multiple teams playing finals we were poised to battle for silverware.
Of course, this was a frustrating end to the season and in the emotion of the moment we think about wins, losses, points, positioning on the table and the momentum that was driving us forward. What was most important was community health and safety. The suspension was completely understandable.
The records will show however that we finished the 2019/20 year as Club Champions and our 2nd grade team was awarded the Albert Cup having been running first at round 15.
By any measure we had a successful year and there are many people to thank for their unwavering commitments:Management committee: Making things tick, hours
2019/20 was an extraordinary season in so many ways A thought?
So who are we? …. We are the Mighty Bulldogs! Throughout the 2019/20 season our club was competitive. We lived and played by the Spirit of Cricket. As is our tradition, players, coaches and administrators connected as a group. On the eve of the finals, spirits were high.
of dedicated work, ensuring smooth operations;
Coaches:
Genuine interest in developing people both on and off the field; Players and supporters: Drive and hard work to compete with integrity; Sponsors and supporters: Financial assistance, transfer of know-how and support:
Canterbury-Bankstown City Council:
Provision of excellent facilities, and Warwick Star for preparing and maintaining Bankstown oval as a Premier oval in Sydney; Cricket New South Wales (CNSW) and Sydney Cricket Association (SCA): Guidance and support, fixture and competition management;
Umpires:
Officiating matches, guidance and knowledge.
At the time of writing, the Covid-19 impact still hovers and there remains uncertainty for the season ahead. Our lives, our club and our communities and business may never be the same in a post Covid-19 world.
Now, more than ever, it’s not about wins and losses. What is important is to be true to our Bulldog spirit, to bond together, to check in and to look after each other, our families, friends and the broader community.
I’m reminded of what Justin Langer says, “Always be ready, so you don’t have to get ready” and that’s a good way to approach 2020/21. There is no doubt our pre-season will be disrupted to an extent and the season itself may require flexibility and agility in order to get games away.
I’m confident that whatever is thrown at us in the coming weeks and months that together we can overcome it and prosper in the long term. My thanks to all that are involved with our great club, I invite everyone to get involved with a strong sense of belonging and I look forward to another outstanding season in 2020/21.
Congratulations to all for the year it was and for the way we represented our club throughout the season and best wishes for the coming season.
Best regards, Scott
Grant

sixty-nintH annual report
I present the Club’s Sixty-Ninth Annual Report and Financial Statement as the world deals with the COVID 19 virus. It feels a tad self-indulgent writing about sport while there is a mounting toll on the health and economic well-being of all the world’s peoples; that said, we owe it to everyone who worked tirelessly during 2019/20 season to effectively record this part of our history.
It should be noted that the Coronavirus pandemic caused Cricket NSW to abandon the Premier Grade Cricket season at the end of Round 15, prior to any finals matches being played. Premierships were awarded based on positions at the conclusion of the Minor Premiership.
The highlights of our 2019/20 season were:
• W inning the ‘Sydney Smith Club Championship Trophy’ for just the fourth time in 69 seasons;
• W inning the ‘Albert Cup’ Second Grade Premiership;
• F irst and Third Grades finishing third in their competitions;
• Hosting WBBL, Pakistan v CA XI and Sheffield Shield matches at Memorial Oval;
• Developing and presenting to CB City Council a ‘Concept Masterplan’ to upgrade Memorial Oval into a ‘turnkey’ facility capable of hosting day/night fixtures;
• Daniel Solway making his Sheffield Shield debut and Nathan Mc Andrew his Marsh Cup NSW LO debut
• Liam Marshall, Brad Simpson and Zeeshaan Ahmed representing NSW at the U19 National Championships with Liam and Brad selected to represent Australia at the U19 World Cup in South Africa
• Three former Bulldogs players operating in key management roles in the sport. Kevin Roberts as CEO of Cricket Australia, Scott Grant as COO at CA and James Allsopp, CEO of Cricket ACT. Kevin, Scott and James are great examples of our goal of developing not just successful cricketers but successful people.
Life Member and club stalwart Gary Crowfoot again led our coaching group, supported by James Bourne, Michael Polson and Aaron Bird. I see at close hand, perhaps more than most people, just how much time, care and passion Gary puts into his role. I can assure everyone that he is relentless in his drive for success for each player and the club as a whole. James, Michael and Aaron are fantastic specialist coaches who work collaboratively under Gary’s guidance. Thanks to James for stepping in and captaining 4th Grade on a few occasions when injuries etc left us short on experience.
Marty Klumpp
Dean Magee continued in the role of Chairman of Selectors and together with Gary deserves the utmost praise for his role in our outstanding Club performances this season. Dean puts in a huge amount of time selecting teams as injuries, representative player unavailability or workload restrictions, exams etc impact more and more on the selection process. This was at a time of huge change in Dean and Kim’s personal life with the birth of daughter Harper Rose. Dean works very hard at ensuring effective communication between himself, captains and players and he always calls things as he sees them (#nosugarcoating).
As always, enthusiastic, committed volunteers underpinned our great Club in 2019/20. Whether it’s parents and guardians ferrying players to training and matches, helping with scoring, removing and packing up wicket covers or providing afternoon teas, we value every contribution made by our volunteers. It would be remiss of me however, on behalf of all players and supporters, not to single out the following people who make exceptional contributions:
Scott Grant and Meegan Smith-Grant Scott and Meegan’s contribution ranges from strategy, bookkeeping, accounting and public relations to lots of ‘seriously getting your hands dirty’ stuff. No ivory tower attitudes here; the old
club adage of “if there’s a broom lying around, pick it up and start sweeping” is very much in Scott and Meegan’s DNA.
Eris Dignam and Margaret Dignam
Margaret and Eris continue their tradition of selfless support for the Club from canteen duty, practice co-ordination, equipment and clothing to banking. Eris has had some health challenges in recent times and we’re very hopeful that he is over the worst and back to being 110% cheeky in 2020/21.
Brian Freedman
In March 2020 we were honoured to have the President of the Uganda Cricket Association Bashir Badu and UCA CEO Martin Ondeko visit Bankstown. To hear Bashir and Martin speak about the unbelievable impact Brian’s pet project (Uganda Equipment Appeal) has had on the sport and on the lives of people in Uganda, is quite inspiring. Add to that 40+ years of service at every level of the game in Australia and you get one of the most unique and important contributions to the game in Australia.
David Clifton
David gives a huge amount of time supporting photography, our website, social media and running the successful All Abilities/Disability Cricket program. David no longer lives or works locally adding more kudos to his efforts. Awarded Life Membership in 2016 for
his outstanding contribution to the Club, this year’s annual report will be the 15th in succession that David had produced. He continues to introduce innovative graphics and designs to ensure it remains the best publication of its type in the land.
Geoff Price and Michelle Price
Pricey continued as 1st Grade scorer, helped Eris with practice co-ordination and Brian with Uganda collections and packing. We received a stark reminder of the contribution that Geoff and Michelle make when they visited family in NZ in January and all of a sudden there was a yawning gap in our volunteer capability. Thanks Geoff and Michelle, we appreciate everything you do to help keep the Club ticking along.
SPONSORS and SUPPORTERS
At the time of writing Bankstown Sports Club is currently in a trading halt (along with all other registered Clubs). This has resulted in the loss of 600 jobs. We thank Chairman John Murray and CEO Mark Condi and his management team for their on-going support. We are confident they will leave no stone unturned to enable the Club’s business operations to resume successfully later in 2020, allowing it to continue to support local charities and its 46 sporting clubs. We are always grateful for the guidance we get from Marie Kanaan, Executive Manager Sport and Community Development and also Marie’s
team members Matthew Starr and Shannon Harley. We also thank Karthik Chidhambaram and the BSC Events team most sincerely for their professional and courteous help.
The closedown of Registered Clubs may lead to some media groups gaining a different insight into the role Clubs play in providing a community hub and underpinning the finances of so many local organisations. BDSC and BDCC have a shared history over six decades and both organisations are committed to working together to build a strong, vibrant and respected City in the future.

Bankstown district cricket cluB welcoMes our uGandan Partners
The club was recently honoured to host in Bankstown for a few days during their visit to Australia for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, Bashir Badu, the Chairman of the Uganda Cricket Association and CEO Martin Ondeko.
This time together gave us the opportunity to even better understand the benefits this scheme is making to the wider community in this under privileged country as well as the game of cricket.
When asked if they were happy to receive oddment club shirts the reply from Bashir was stark “it might just be another
shirt to people here but when we give it to a teacher or a groundsman and the like back in Uganda, it can be a life changing experience”.
For some time we have been including cricket books, largely donated by members of the Primary Club of Australia in our shipments and often wondered how they were being put to use. We were gladdened to learn the UCA had set up a library to make the books available to the widest possible audience and where they receive multiple copies of the same book they give these to schools to use as prizes for scholastic and sporting achievement.
A significant portion of what we ship is donated to government schools, making it seemingly unfair the Uganda Cricket Association has to pay import tax on what we ship and we are assisting them to apply pressure on their government for some relief in this area.
We currently have almost enough merchandise to fill our 14th container but this will obviously not happen until the Coronavirus situation is brought under control. We are continuing to collect however, and request all to spread the word that our Uganda project remains “open for business”.
“it might just be another shirt to people here… but [in Uganda] it can be a life changing experience”

Unfortunately this was our last game together in February 2020 before all sport was cancelled. Brian Fincato bowls to Cameron Chance, whose batting partner is George Shaloub. In the field is Mundeeb Uddin at mid on and Antonio Pejoski at close mid off.
The All Abilities Cricket Program is a partnership between Recreation, Sports and Aquatics Club (RSAC) and BDCC. It provides cricketers with a disability - of any ability - the opportunity to train for and play cricket to the highest elite level (Special Olympics or NSW Intellectual Disability Cricket) or solely for fun. Since
its inception, Bankstown Sports Club has always supported this program and continues to demonstrate its dedication to helping those in need in our communities.
Running all year round - every second Sunday from 9am to 11am - our program provides a continuity not possible in other cricket programs.
Unfortunately this year saw the entire sports landscape overturned and all sports actitivities ground to a shuddering halt due to the Coronavirus. At the time of going to print we have no idea when the program may re-commence. Stay tuned!

We also lost our main coach during the season - Matt Clifton - who left Australia to travel the globe (or many interesting places) and is now living and working in London.
Fortunately, as one door closes, another opens, and we were very grateful and fortunate to have Bankstown local Darren McLean join us as a qualified
coach in 2020. Darren partners with the great coaching support we get from the parents and carers such as Ian Russell, Bruce Andrews, Michael Katzakis and Manjit Dhupar. Without you all, this program simply could not function to the standard it does - the players and the club thank you sincerely.
We all look forward to coming back to cricket as soon as we can sometime in 2020.

The 2019/2020 season saw BCNSW celebrate its third year at Bankstown Oval and once again it was successful for a number of reasons.
Firstly the implementation of our juniors programme, which was run by our State Coach Jason Stubbs, this programme saw a number of new young players introduced to Blind Cricket.
Jason along with a good number of our senior players ran a number of clinics and game scenarios where the juniors learnt and improved their basic skills and learnt team work and the benefits of our game. These sessions were held in the mornings prior to our domestic games and all the
youngsters were encouraged to stay and participate in our domestic games. Our season launch was a game against the Sydney Thunder. This match as always was closely contested and saw BCNSW narrowly defeat the Thunder team. This game is now an annual event that allow BCNSW to showcase and explain the nuances of Blind Cricket to the Community Cricket Officers and the Senior Management of the Thunder, which helps us to improve the understanding of Blind Cricket across the greater Cricketing Community.
The National Cricket inclusion Championships were once again held in Geelong in January 2020. Bushfire crisis saw
the competition shortened by two days. BCNSW had a close fought win against Victoria in game 1 with NSW victorious by 5 runs in the end. NSW then played WA and knuckled down to grind out a win by a healthy margin. This game saw the debut of Ethan Scarturchio.
Game 3 NSW were pitted against SA and NSW were once again victorious sending us straight into the grand final. BCNSW faced SA in the final and for the third consecutive season were victorious with an emphatic win in a rain shortened match. NSW passed SA’s total in 10 overs. The team as a whole contributed with outstanding performances from all.
Captain Lindsay Heaven was
named player of the tournament and Shaun Fitzpatrick was the B2 player of the tournament and Oscar Stubbs was player of the final.
It was great to see Scott Grant at the final and want to thank Scott and the BDCC board for their ongoing support of BCNSW.
BCNSW hosted the Primary Club in our annual match at Graeme Thomas Oval. BCNSW had a narrow win but the Primary Club came within a whisker of their inaugural win but just fell short. The Primary Club are wonderful ongoing supporters of Blind Cricket.
The Bushfire Crisis and then Covid 19 has shortened our season but although shortened it was still a fun and fulfilling season for all involved. I must thank all of our hard working volunteers and our board for their effort in 2019-2020 without them things would be a lot different.
obituaries
we offer our sincere condolences to all MeMBers wHo Have lost loved ones in tHe Past Year
Alex Fulcher
MBE OAM (1935 – 2020)
It is with sadness we advise the passing in of Bankstown Sports Club Director and keen BDCC supporter Alex Fulcher.
A former professional cycling star with three silver and bronze medals in the Australian Pursuit championship, Alex was well known as a racing cyclist for his strong aggressive racing. However, it was Alex’s dedication to cycling as an administrator, sponsor, coach, selector, manager, mentor and helper for which he will always be best remembered. Alex gave 40 selfless years to the sport he loved, supported in large part by his devoted wife Janet. His commitment to track and road cycling as an elite athlete, coach, manager and volunteer was recognized with the awarding of an MBE in 1982 and OAM in 2013.
Apart from cycling and his family, Alex’s other great passion was Bankstown Sports Club and the sporting clubs and community-based charities that sit under BSC’s umbrella. Alex served on the Board of Bankstown Sports Club for 14 years from 2006. He brought the same diligence and commitment that he showed as an elite Cyclist and Sports Administrator to his role as a BSC Director. He never missed a Board meeting and attended literally hundreds of sporting club and charity presentations and AGM’s. People always warmed to his decency, gentlemanly manner and genuine interest in individuals and organisations that were “having a go” as he’s often put it.
Over the past decade Alex also became a great fan of the Bankstown Grade Club and was a regular supporter at Memorial Oval. In his typical style he would often sit in the grandstand watching matches, never seeking a special place or to take up anyone’s time. He’s often phoned the next day to debrief on his interpretation of the team tactics and individual performances –the DNA of an elite sportsman and coach never far from the surface. Alex relished reading every word of our Annual Reports and he attended every BDCC AGM since 2013 in his role as BSC Director.
We offer wife Janet and children Mark, Rik and Jacqueline our sincerest condolences.
Douglas James Shedden (1937 - 2020)
Doug Shedden was a popular figure in Bankstown City, having sat on Bankstown City Council between 1977-1987 where he served as Deputy Mayor from 1980–83. He was the elected Member for Bankstown in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1987 to 1999. During this time, he was active on the Bankstown Hospital Board and Management Committee of Bankstown Senior Citizens Centre.
Doug was a Director of Bankstown Sports Club between 2000 and 2014 and was afforded Life Membership in 2010. He served with distinction as a Director on the Board of the club and was an active participant in the Bankstown Sports Bowling club.
While Doug supported any and every Bankstown sporting club and community group, he held a particular soft sport for the efforts of Bankstown District Cricket Club. Immediately he heard that we were planning a re-development of the Bankstown Memorial Oval complex, he called President Brian Freedman and offered his full support. Doug attended several meetings with NSW Sports Minister Gabrielle Harrison and her successor John Watkins and guided the Club through the application process for Government grants. After many years of lobbying, his efforts paid dividends when the NSW Government awarded BDCC a grant that facilitated building the Kevin McCormick Grandstand and the Steve and Mark Waugh Pavilion.
In 2013 Bankstown Memorial Oval was described by Australian Captain Michael Clarke as “the best suburban cricket facility in the world”. As we continue to develop the Memorial Oval precinct, we should always remember that it was the foresight and quiet (but fierce) determination of Doug Shedden that got us our initial break.
Doug was always supported in his community work by wife Pat who sadly passed away suddenly in 2014, a loss that Doug never really got over. To Doug’s loving daughter Leanne, we offer our sincere condolences.
Gwen Briggs (1934 - 2020)
Gwen Briggs was a stalwart volunteer from the Club’s inception; a true pioneer of the great Bulldog tradition of welcoming opposing teams to Bankstown Oval and spoiling them with great afternoon teas.
Gwen was the wife of First Grade Cap Number 3 Ron Briggs, the diminutive right-handed Australia XI, NSW and Bankstown batsman who captained the Bulldogs inaugural Bevidere Cup winning side in 1958-59.
Club Historian Mick Stephenson recalls Gwen “as a lovely lady, who along with Mary Boddy had a huge influence on the club’s early days, especially with our famed afternoon teas”.
Gwen is typical of that great band of volunteers who make any sporting club tick. She and others like her have inspired new generations who carry on the good works, ensuring players are well fed and watered and allowing them to concentrate on the playing the game and not worrying about the things that need to happen off the field.
Gwen is proudly survived by children Troy, Greg, Cheryl and Jann and we offer them and their families our sincere condolences.
Alan Ellis (1926 - 2019)
The diminutive right hander Alan Ellis joined Bankstown from Balmain in 1953-54 season. He was an aggressive, hard hitting batsman and handy leg spinner. Remembered as a flamboyant captain and brilliant fieldsman, Alan always pushed on for victory regardless of the state of the game. His never say die attitude made him an exemplary role model for younger players, including Bulldog legends Bob Lamaro and John Bull. Alan amassed 5605 runs for Bankstown with 422 in first grade and snared 61 wickets with his leggies. For the trivia buffs, Alan was born on the 28th January, died on the 28th May and was very proud of his Bankstown 1st Grade Cap No. 28 cap, which was displayed in the Hall of Fame of his local Bowling Club for many years until his passing. Alan’s brother Ken played many seasons with Bankstown and was 3rd Grade Captain in our inaugural grade season, 1951-52.
To Alan’s daughter Jennifer Muller and the extended Ellis family, we offer our sincerest condolences.
club Grounds and facilities
Canterbury Bankstown City Council provided us with high quality on field and off field facilities that set us apart from many Premier Grade Clubs and underpin our continued success as a Club.
The efforts of CB City Council and curators Warwick Starr,NickMamolis,Mitchell Gardiner,NevilleRaeand DarrylThatcherandhisteam were recognised by Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW awarding Memorial Oval hosting rights for a Women’s BBL match, the CA XI versus Pakistan T20 warmup a Sheffield Shield match. SteveBuckley from Lance Hutchinson Oval also assisted with presenting the Sheffield Shield match and he was a terrific fit with the rest of the crew.
WarwickStarr has advised that he will be retiring in August 2020. Warwick took over at Memorial Oval from Tom Parker in 1996. During that time Warwick has prepared wickets for visiting international teams, Sheffield Shield, Limited Overs and T20 matches not to mention over 10 Belvidere Cup finals. He has won the coveted Ground of the Year Award on numerous occasions and consistently received the highest accolades from professional match officials and team captains. As a Grade Club we
are indebted to Warwick for the diligence he has shown towards preparing Memorial Oval no matter whether it was a highprofile representative match or a grade fixture. Warwick has always accommodated us when we asked for extra playing dates, for centre wicket training setups and was always keen to get feedback about how the facilities performed and take it on board. Last season we successfully completed the move from Jensen Oval to Kelso North Oval. NickMamolis transferred form Jensen and he applied his usual diligence towards bring up the new wicket square at Kelso North. The wicket was performing above expectations in the first few rounds but a service vehicle damaged the square resulting in the ground being taken out of service for a couple of rounds while laser levelling was completed. Nick is very committed to preparing wickets of the highest order and we know Kelso will be a top-class field – every new turf square takes time to settle and realistically Kelso will take another half / full season before it hits its straps. The outfield lacks a first-class drainage system (aka Memorial Oval) but the grass cover is the equal, if not superior to Memorial Oval. We appreciate the support of TimHall from the Bullsharks AFL Club and Peterand
JillArcher from East Hills Baseball Club with whom we share the amenities block. In particular Peter and Jill were very understanding as we got our processes right, especially coming to grips with the security system for the amenities block.
Grahame Thomas Oval is an open ground and it continues to gets a huge amount of recreational traffic. The playing of unauthorised ‘social’ sport at GT Oval is definitely taking a toll on the outfield with many of these groups using the same patch of ground (or the turf square) every time they turn up. Despite these challenges, Warwick and his team always ensure that grade training facilities and match wickets at GT Oval are of the highest order.
The Club also manages under license from CB City Council the John Mackay Sports Centre, The Bankstown Sporting Hall of Fame and Stephen and Mark Waugh Pavilion. These facilities support Men’s and Women’s Premier Grade Clubs. CNSW elite Academy Programs as well as a range of other community hirers including Bankstown Public School, Bankstown Girls High School, RSAC Disabled Cricket, Lakemba Sports Club and NSW Blind Cricket Association.

Nick Carruthers
Player of the year
His statistics say it all.
2 centuries, 5 fifties, 105 boundries, 31 sixes, 969 runs @ 44.05 with a strike rate of 87.8.
Nick’s commitment and enthusiasm for the game has been rewarded with a fabulous season. He continually put opposition opening attacks under pressure with his attacking approach while his 150 against Hawkesbury was one to remember.
Centuries in T20 matches are a rarity making his ton against Parramatta one for the record books.
A richly deserved award.

Firstly what an Incredible season it was for the club, with success across the entire board and to bring home the club championship, along with the second-grade title is a phenomenal effort by all the players, coaches, families and volunteers involved with the club! As a club we showed great signs of what was to come way back in the pre-season where we started with the largest turnout I have seen to our fitness program and this was just a sign of what was to come!
1st grade
The year ahead posed many challenges for our club and the first-grade group, with a young and relatively inexperienced but talented side ready to take on the season, and boy wasn’t it a thrilling start to the season. Winning by the barest of margins of just one run! The boys showed tremendous fight, discipline and teamwork to set the tone of what would be a great season ahead. Throughout the year our first-grade side was characterised by its Bulldogs’ spirit and contributions all throughout the team, with many players stepping up to showcase their ability as proven first grade cricketers. This season would see many of our long time Bankstown boys step up to the challenge with Marshy, Simmo, Ben Le Bas, Zeeshan & Gargy all showing their class in the top grade as well as embracing some new and exciting talent to the club from both this year and last in Hindsy, Burs, JL and Noddy (Nicotra) who are extremely great additions as both players and as people.
The emergence of those players in combination with the teams experienced players led to some of our season highlights! One that comes to mind is the youthful Marshy opening the bowling with Macca to have ND’s 7/8 and show what a force to be reckoned with we would be throughout the season.
However, the season wasn’t without its ups and downs, after being undefeated through the T20 competition which saw Nick belt teams everywhere – including a brilliant T20 hundred (to go with all other runs he scored this season). We fell agonisingly short of our Maiden T20 Thunder Conference title with Hawkesbury chasing down our total in the last over of the fixture.
There is no doubting that coming so close was tough to bear but being the resilient side we were, we bounced back and pushed on towards the Belvidere Cup in true Bulldog style, with many players stepping up to the challenge, from Zeesh’s swashbuckling 80, Hindsy’s incredible hundred on his club first grade debut in 40 degree heat, to the ever-reliable performances of players like BT, Macca, Browny and Nick to come charging towards the finals series.

We were gaining momentum right up until the last round with an incredible outright victory against Fairfield and a rain affected last round victory against Sutherland, to see us charging into the finals full of confidence, in form and full of confidence for what would lie ahead!
Whilst we may never know how successful our finals campaign would have been, to finish 3rd in the first-grade competition and to win the club championship is something everyone can be extremely proud of!
On behalf of all the team I’d like to say a huge “thank you” to
• Scott Grant and the Management Committee for looking after all the off-field requirements to keep the Club humming along
• Gary Crowfoot and James Bourne and the coaching group for your commitment to ensuring we had every chance to prepare and play to our potential
• Geoff Price, our dedicated 1st grade scorer for the past nine seasons, for your amazing commitment to the Club. We realised as soon as Geoff was overseas in January just what a vital role he plays every Saturday (and also on training days, along with the redoubtable Eris Dignam)
• Margaret Dignam, Meegan Smith-Grant, Kim McLean, Michelle Price for your efforts in the canteen
So, enjoy the break from cricket, and ensure you and your families stay safe over these challenging times for the country and I can’t wait to see what we can do in this competition next season!
First of all I’d like to congratulate the whole club for a such an outstanding season, in lots of ways 2019/2020 will never be forgotten in one way or another. It will be remembered as the season that Bankstown DCC were the best performed Club in the competition with 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, PG’s and Green Shield all making Finals and also winning what I believe is the hardest and most prestigious award to win, the CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP by a staggering 234 points. I have been lucky enough to be a 4 time winner of this award but to prove how hard is it to win that is over a 40 year career so do the maths 1 every 10 years means it doesn’t come around to often and it needs everything to go to plan from the front office to the coaches and most importantly the players. Everyone played their part perfectly in achieving this success and what has happened to the world since March should not take away from what we have all achieved in the 2019/2020 season so lets celebrate as best as we can.
I would also like to congratulate Daniel and the 1st grade team on their hugely successful season in all competitions, Sol’s I’m sure silverware is just around the corner with such a talented group of players and they have now found a leader who can take the team to another level. We will never know how far the team could have gone if the finals had been played, also congratulations Sol’s on all your personal achievements for both Bankstown and NSW in 2019/2020, I know the whole club feels part of your journey and I’m sure it will continue for a long time to come. Also a special mention to Matty Dedes and his 3rd grade team for an outstanding year as well.
Now about the 2nd Grade Albert Cup winners for the 2019/2020 season.
To all of the 20 guys that represented 2nd grade this season, congratulations on a fantastic year. You all thoroughly deserve to be called Premiers as each and everyone of you contributed to the success of the team both on and off the field at some point. Within 2 seasons this group has gone from 15th 2018 to 4th 2019 and now Premiers in 2020 what an achievement. One of the major reasons we did come up winners was the great blend of both youth and experience within the whole group highlight by most opposition Captains at the end of each game “ saying you have the perfect team this season that can take out the Premiership “ and we did. We had a great base of experience players each week due to the addition of proven 1st grade cricketers Dan Nicotra, Matt Bursa from Blacktown and Jarrod Lysaught from Campbelltown arriving to the club and combined with Mitch, Joel, Stef, Chris and then add the brilliance of our younger group and you have a winning formula which only comes around so often. Also 15 of the 20 squad members have played 1st grade in their careers at some stage with 12 playing a role in Dan’s team this season with great success when given the opportunity which no other club could match but interestingly we only had 3 players who played every game in 2nd grade being Dayne,Joel and Ryan.
Some interesting statistics to come out of a winning season that I thought were important, we were able to win 10 out of 14 tosses which allowed us to control the game from the outset and we were also unbeaten at our home grounds whether it be Bankstown or Kelso.

Our batting was not much different than last year scoring 3167 in 2018 to 2954 this season except there were more centuries scored, once again Mitch Hinds was our leading run scorer with 413 runs @ 29.5 but without doubt the biggest moment of his season was an outstanding 106 n/o against Penrith in 1st grade achieving something he has wanted to do for a long time, congratulations Mitch on another great year.
I think the biggest improvement was our disciplined bowling only conceding 2458 runs with a difference of 1106 from 2018, this allowed us to build and keep extreme pressure on the opposition batting side and I can not speak more highly of the bowling group. Also I believe our catching and ground fielding improved greatly which we must thank James for all his hard work on a Wed/Thurs in this area.
Chris Ridley: I would like to make special mention of how important Chris was to us at the back end of our season, just having you around the
group helped us all more than you will ever know and I’m so glad you finished the season with a brilliant 65 after a tough time of it but class lasts forever mate and never based on 1 season, now you have a Premiership win to call your own, thanks for everything over the last 2 seasons as you have been a huge part of not only 2nd grades success but the ongoing success whole club.
Also a special mention to Matthew Simpson on his contribution to the side with 27 dismissals which included some outstanding snares, it was great to have him back playing cricket at the club once again.
I would like now to write a little about each player as to what I thought was their most important moment of the season in our Premiership Win, with only 1 point between 1st / 2nd place and no finals that’s what it came down to: KEY MOMENTS!
Mansukh Singh: Round 13 Randwick 13 n/o We were
2nd Grade bowling 2019-20
4-17 when Mansukh and Jarrod came together with 29 overs to bat in the dark and rain, against his natural game showed how much he improved over the season facing 80 balls which allowed us to hang on to 2 points.
Zeeshaan Ahmed: Round 3 Northern District 138 Showed all his class facing 210 balls combining with Mitch for a 218 run partnership chasing 274. 6 points chasing at Kelso.
Daniel Nicotra: Round 2 St George Although we ending up losing outright his first innings of 40 off 17 balls on a tough green wicket allowed us to take 6 first innings points and after losing outright day 2, his innings on day 1 meant we kept 4 very important points.
Joel Brockley: Round 6 Manly after dismissing Manly for 206 on a soft wicket Joel scored a solid 34 off 45 balls opening the batting which allowed us to creep over the line in the end. 6 points at Manly Oval chasing no easy thing to do.
Mitch Hinds: Round 4 Mosman Topped scored with 79 off 119 balls holding the

batting together to get passed 200 giving us something to bowl at in the afternoon, Mosman crumbled to be all out 119. 6 points away from home again.
Ryan Clark: Round 14 Fairfield At 7-99 chasing 203 for victory winning was a long way off but Ryan played his best innings of his season scoring 56 n/o off 145 balls in 2 partnerships with Ben and Tush to get us home 8 down. 6 points gained against all odds.
Matthew Simpson: Round 8 UNSW Chasing 324 on day 2 in 45 degree heat and then after being 4-24 we were gone until Simo decided it was going to be his day scoring a wonderful 123 off 192 which will be talked about for a long time to come. 6 points chasing great dig.
Jarred Lysaught: Round 13 Randwick When we looked like losing outright Jarrod’s partnership with Mansukh help saved us, on 1 leg through injury he survived 71 balls and together they lasted 26 overs to save 2 very important points.
Ethan Debono: Round 8 UNSW Together with Matt chasing 324 to win, Ethan came in and hit 46 off 68 in a partnership of 85 and was a perfect foil for Matt as he was tiring in the heat, great finisher most improved batter of the season. 6 points chasing.
Thomas Sowden: Round 7 Gordon After a long partnership Tommie came to the crease and showed his class scoring 44 off 47 balls and taking the game away from Gordon when it could have gone another way. 6 points chasing again.
Chris Stefanish: Round 8 UNSW Stef had a great season and was well liked by all in the team and on day one against UNSW he excelled taking 6-for 56 off 21.5 overs on a very flat wicket, always gives 100%. 6 points set up by his efforts day 1
Matt Bursa: Whole Season I didn’t want to break Matt’s contribution into 1 game because wether it be game day or training he was the difference between our team finishing 4th in 2018/19 and 1st 2019/2020. Thanks Matt for what you brought us this season.
Dayne Heward: Round 7 Gordon On a very flat Bankstown wicket Dayne ran in hard and bowled a great spell taking 5-56 off 16.5 overs and set up our run chase. Most improved bowler for season 6 points chasing again.
Tushaar Garg: Round 13 Fairfield We didn’t see Tushaar much as he was in and out of 1st grade but when he was with us he always lead from the front, his all round game against Fairfield was a his best taking 3-25 and his partnership with Ryan 11 of 60 balls saved the game.
Also played in this Premiership side but had limited opportunities were Ben Le Bas 1 game 4-48 off 21 overs and 30 runs, Justin Felsch 4 games 33 runs 5 wickets, Blake Pearson 2 games 1 wicket, Cameron Middleton 62 runs 8 dismissals.
To win Premierships is not all about the 11 players that take the field each week – it is a collective achievement from some fantastic people and Bankstown DCC has plenty of them. To the Coach of The Year Winner Gary Growfoot and his staff James, Aaron, Ray, Alan, Mick Poulson and all the helpers at training including Geoff and Eris, thankyou for your dedication to the cause as there is always a quality session for the players week in week out to help them improve.
I would like to congratulate Dean and my fellow Captains for a job well done and thank them for their friendship and support in 2019/2020.
Special mention to James, Ron and Mike for being our support staff each week, it makes my life so much easier having you all involved and this win is as much yours as it is the players. To all our sponsors thankyou for all your ongoing support, without it we do not get to do what we all love doing so much.
To Scott, Brian, Marty and all the committee plus the ground staff at both Bankstown and Kelso Ovals and also the wonderful canteen ladies with again the best afternoon teas in Sydney Grade Cricket thankyou so much on behalf of the 2nd Grade team for all your efforts and support over 2019/2020 season and congratulation’s to you all for an outstanding year culminating in another CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP.
In closing: Everyone over the last 2 season has bought into the culture I have tried to bring to this team, sometimes not always happy about it eg “The Thanks For Coming Award” won this year by Mitch Hinds the official winner of the plastic toilet seat but it is never disrespectful. Ultimately it is the results on the field that win you games but the fun and camaraderie we had together off the field is just as important and it has been a pleasure to be in charge of this mature and immensely talented group of men.
Again I would like to thank my wife Jodie and all my family for their support as you have all been a part of another wonderful season.
Last but not least I want to wish all involved at Bankstown DCC a safe off season and look forward to whatever lies ahead for us all.

3rd grade
The 2019/2020 3rd grade season was a momentous, enigmatic and rewarding season for players, coaches and the Bankstown cricket club. Winning Second Grade, qualifying three home finals and achieving an all-lucrative club championship was a remarkable effort during the midst of utter adversity (Covid-19). I would personally like to begin by thanking every player, coach, helper and parent for the outstanding contribution toward 3rd grade cricket this year, which is a testament to the community, which we continue to strive for here at Bankstown Premier Grade Cricket Club.
Early on it was evident there was a very positive feeling surrounding the 3rd grade season. With a strong 2018/2019 campaign behind our backs, 3rd Grade drew confidence leading into the 2019/2020 season as a definite favorite. Losing our forever-trusted captain Iain Ridley, saw the onset of a new dynasty closely supported by Dean Magee – whom week in, week out altruistically ensured leadership qualities were instilled with necessary life lessons upon request. I would like to extend a special mention to Dean, entrusting me with the captaincy and continually helping and guiding me throughout the season. Thank-you!
Other special mentions go to Gary Crowfoot, Brian Freedman and Marty Klumpp for their consistent and selfless dedication to helping 3rd grade achieve almighty heights this season. Thanks also to President Scott Grant and the management Committee and Eris Dignam and Geoff Price for your help at training sessions.
The 2019/2020 season saw the emergence of a team determined to go one better than the last. Comprising of past superstars, up and coming youngsters and some experienced grade cricketers, the season really lived up to all the hype. “Always at the death” will forever be instilled within my memory and my blood pressure levels, as the motto for our season. We tended to want to win games by the slightest of margins. Every week. Without a doubt. The tenacity and camaraderie on display, along with the ability to make something out of absolutely nothing provided the boys with memories I promise will last a lifetime. It’s what it will always be about.
Whether it was our trusted “king of spin” Thomas Sowden taking 3 wickets at the death, with only 10 runs to spare; Billa running in “snicking” off kids for fun; Kobe Layton hitting 3 sixes to end an innings; Basit Ali scoring 49 off 12 balls to bring it home for us; and of course who could forget Alex Kouventaris’ 70 to save the innings for us at Northern Districts – it was the overall ability to make something out of nothing that made this team so special.
There’s no doubt in my mind and I’m sure people will agree with me, that this year was by far our favorite and most rewarding in grade cricket. People often prioritise results and awards around individual performances but what made this team so special was the culture and willingness to grow. There were no superstars, only a team prepared to work for one another. It was an absolute pleasure to captain all the boys that came and went through my team, something I will cherish forever. To all the youngsters, study hard, listen to your mothers and for all the veterans, rest up for another year!
There will always be more to life than cricket, but spending Saturday’s with your best friends will always be hard to beat.
2019-20 Club Champions! What a wonderful achievement and testimony to all players who represented the Club this year as well as all the amazing off field support. A true team effort from all our volunteers, coaching staff, parents and players. Congratulations to Tony and the Second-grade side for their Premiership win. It’s great to get some more silverware back at the club again especially in a lower grades.
4th grade
Rolling into round 1 saw a 4th grade side led by Kouvy with half the team playing their first game of 4th grade. By round 3 Kouvy was promoted to 3rd grade and the captaincy was shared between Bulldog great James Bourne and myself. By round 6 we had won 5 of the 6 games and were sitting close to the top of the table. A major influence on this early season form I believe was the performances of Blake Pearson, who was scoring runs at 3 and taking wickets with the new ball. Apart from Blake though we saw a number of young players having break through performances such as Brody Polkinghorne’s 7 for 35 vs Gordon, Daniel Khan’s early season batting form with scores of 51, 78 no, 47 and 45. At the Christmas break 4th grade sat in 3rd place and were well positioned for a finals birth.
When we returned from the break we remained undefeated in our first 3 games back including our best win of the season against a strong Hawksbury team coming first at the time. This game featured the best batting partnership of the season. In a pressure situation Ryan Freeman walked to the crease at 6 for 63 chasing 175 with James Bourne not long at the crease. The pair batted superbly together with Bourney as the anchor and Freeman playing an innings of pure class and controlled aggression with the pair getting us over the line with Bourney 50no and Freeman 62no.
A heatwave at Penrith round 12 ended in a draw before we capitulated with the bat against Randwick Round 13 resulted in us needing to win one of our remaining last 2 games. A disappointing draw against Fairfield Round 14 where we were washed out with 26 runs to win when all other teams got on the paddock and got results soured our campaign.
A further wash out Round 15 saw us go from 3rd place to 8th almost overnight, which while disappointing was still a very decent effort for an inexperienced team. I think the players who played in 4s this season should be proud of what they achieved and the performances as a team. Our batting ultimately let us down at key stages of the year and proved the difference. A lot was learned and we take our experience into next season with expectations to be even better.
Special mention to Anthony Melnyk who played every game of 4th grade this season and took out the bowling aggregate with 18 wickets at 16. More impressive to me however was Anthony week in week out being the first to put his hand up to score, pack away equipment, bowl the hard spells, bat down the order and hold up an end with dogged determination. Bulldog qualities indeed – so, well-done mate.
Other notable mentions for the season would be Rahid Alam and the energy he brought to the team whilst doing a great job behind the stumps and showing glimpses of brilliance with the bat. Ryan Freeman likewise already mentioned but a player of immense talent and one to watch.
Thirty-one players used for the season – too many to mention them all but thank you to everyone who played in the side this season and for your efforts.
Thank you to the tireless efforts of our volunteers who without them we wouldn’t have the great club that we have. Thank you to the coaches led by life member and the inspirational Gary Crowfoot, Bourney and co. Thanks to Chairman Dean Magee for his support and guidance throughout the year and congratulations to other captains who led their teams well throughout the season. To Kouvy and Bourney (also Ryan Malcolm for looking after a round) great team effort guys. Once again as always, it’s an honour and a privilege to play for this great club. We must continue to pass on this club culture that is so rich and special to all those who have worn the Bulldogs colours or been involved over the years.
I guess it’s hard to know what lays in store for the upcoming season during these unprecedented times. What I do know is that during times like these you do appreciate things that can be taken for granted. Putting on the Bulldogs kit and walking out onto that field is something special and something to not take for granted. I’m sure we are all looking forward to getting back onto the field with our mates, having a win for the mighty Bulldogs and belting out our team song at the end of the day.
A season that could (and then couldn’t due to pandemic) have been for 5s. Coming off a mid-table finish from a young and inexperienced side in 18/19, expectations were high, due in no small part to an excellent preseason (the best I’ve witnessed in 15 years) and an obvious depth of talent amongst those trialling. With trial games disrupted, we went into Round 1 against what turned out to be a vastly experienced North Sydney side slightly under-done and copped a bit of a reality check early doors. This was the catalyst for some serious reflection and then an inspiring win against the odds against Saints, after losing the toss on a sticky, setting a meagre total yet rolling them for less than 100 in reply. We followed this up with two draws frustrating draws (both of which we were the dominant side in) and then a string of wins going into Christmas that had us firmly entrenched in the 6.
Post-Christmas is something that I believe all of the developing players within the side will never forget, for all the wrong reasons. Chasing a sub-par total of 230 against Wests to kick off the back half of the season, eight of our batsmen scored between 15 and 31 to have us rolled for 180. I truly believe that this was the key to our lack of success in the second half of the year; our ability with the stick was on show during every match but for far too little time from a few too little batsmen. Bryan’s composed and gritty 51* against Fairfield in Round 14 was the only time one of our batsmen made a score of note after Christmas, though if anyone goes back through the scorecards they will note 15+ innings of around 30. Put simply, starts don’t win games of cricket.
Draws against Easts, Penrith and Sutherland due to weather and a couple of horrible tosses to lose meant that very quickly our season nose-dived in regard to competition points, seeing us finish almost exactly where we did last season after a blinding start. This is extremely disappointing from my perspective as I truly believe that the core of this 5th Grade side is destined for much higher honours in years to come and I know that if everyone takes the time to look back on their seasons, we all left runs and wickets out there which could very well have seen us be one of the premier sides in the competition (albeit an abandoned one).
One absolute positive from this season is the excellent standards in regarding to fielding and general effort on display amongst this group. Young sides are always expected to be able to field due to athleticism but oftentimes the nous required to put in repeated, high-quality performances isn’t there in developing squads; not the case with these blokes. Time and time again, the effort on display from our pups was commented on by opposition skippers and umpires alike and this is one of the reasons why I’m sure that the core of this side, as well as those who made it in for their debuts this season will be the foundations of higher grade sides in seasons to come.
It would be absolute remiss of me not to express my sincerest thanks for all of the efforts that people have put in for us as a club this year. Firstly to all of the volunteers, parents and supporters who front up for training/games each and every week, you are a credit to yourselves and the club and are a fundamental reason that we were able to win the Club Championship this season. I’m loathe to mention names as I know that I’ll forget people but I know the Dogs on the field are eternally grateful for all that you do off it. Great clubs are built on the back of you and I hope that you give yourselves the credit you deserve for what we were able to achieve on the field this season.
To Crowie, Bourney, Deano and all of the other skippers involved in leading this great club around in 2019/20, I’d like to express my sincerest thanks on behalf of both myself and my playing group. Your care for player wellbeing and the general confidence that your hard work has instilled amongst these blokes is something that all other clubs and players in the SCA should be envious of and the ship that you’re running, despite a heap of potential speed-bumps this season shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. Well done and thanks for letting me be a part of it.
Thank you again to Ben Taylor who really pushed the boys to excel at training, which enabled each playing member to perform at a regular occurrence, which was shown with great team and individual results throughout the competition.
To Gary Crowfoot, James Bourne and Nick Carruthers plus all the other bulldog players that had a word to the AWG side either at training or during the season, I thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience and helping to build the future of this great club.
In 2019/20 season we had seven players back up from the 2018/19 series and I want to thank these players for taking on the responsibility of the senior roles; a task they were probably not expecting. Standing up and showing the way to the fresher faced players was a great help for BT and me.
Finishing 5th is a great achievement. Looking back on the competition we had some boys who were able to hit the ground running, while others found their feet along the way. The challenges we gave the squad were met with great positivity, whether it was a bowling plan that they had only practised a hand full of times or just simply running more singles then their previous innings, it was great to see a group respond to these challenges.
Hayden and Ilyaan were our top performers with the ball with 15 wickets a piece, with five other players capturing six or more wickets each. The batting performances where lead by Arnav putting his best foot forward with 347 @43.0 average. Opening the batting Arnav scored three half centuries to add to his century in the first round. Manoj was next in line scoring 290 @ 36.0 average; with a couple of matches finely balanced, his timely middle order contributions swung the momentum back in our favour and set us up for victory.
The side won seven of the nine games played, unfortunately losing to the eventual Premiers in the semi-final. The games against Mosman and Manly certainly will be spoken about in the coming years; everyone that was privileged to witness the final overs of each game will appreciate the work put in by the boys to put themselves into a winning position. They also contributed to me needing blood pressure tablets!
Finally, I want the thank the Management Committee for continual support you have shown towards Ben and me in our AWG coaching roles. Also, to our fantastic Manager Suresh Weerasingham and lunch catering supremo Malini, thank you on behalf of all the boys for your tireless efforts. Thanks too to Kash Patel who led our on-line scoring efforts – maintaining your concentration and remaining calm in a couple of those tight finishes must have been very difficult.
To all the boys who played in this year’s Green Shield team, I wish you all the best for the offseason and hope you all continue your cricket careers with this wonderful Club.
With quite a few players finishing up their underage cricket careers last season it meant positions up for grabs. With some of these boys narrowly missing out the year before, we came into the 2019/2020 season with a point to prove.
Our season kicked off with a T20 against Penrith. Our two young quicks Brad Simpson and Liam Marshall straight away showing the competition what they’re made of by blasting some serious heat through the Penrith top order. With excellent efforts from spin twins Ryan Clark and Justin Felsch, supported by experienced paceman Dayne Heward, we managed to restrict Penrith to 155. Peter Dignam and Zeeshaan Ahmed took it upon themselves to just about secure the win with Cameron Middleton hitting a quick fire 20 to bring home the first win for the Dogs.
Round 2 saw us play Wests at Pratten Park, our first 50 Over match of the season. Bowling first our attack made very good use of the short ball rattling the Magpies top order. With some tight bowling through the middle overs once again we tied Wests to 201. After losing quick wickets we looked in some trouble but with a brilliant knock from wicket-keeper batsmen Cameron Middleton (65 off 51) saw us chase down the total in 39.5 overs.
Round 3 was home at Memorial Oval v Parramatta. Unfortunately, we lost Peter Dignam who suffered an injury in the Wests match. We batted first and after a cautious start Mansukh Singh and young gun Cameron Cotter performed well. Cotter was excellent in his debut game and Singh continued his display of elegant stroke play to notch 55. The middle order chipped all with starts but no one was able to capitalize on good starts and we ended 10/211. With some fantastic energy we made it known we were hungry for success and that we wouldn’t roll over. Once again with a ruthless cartel of quick bowling we tore through Parramatta’s batting line up, bowling them out for 70.
The half way mark; after some training talks and extra yards with our fielding we went into game 4 with confidence; Northern Districts at home. Some confusion at the start over who was batting and who was bowling it was finally settled that we would bat first, With a strong start from our openers and Mansukh Singh notched up 59 from 47 balls unfortunately that’s all we had to bark about; knocked over for 145. As We still took the field with confidence as T20 is a funny game and anything can happen. As our start to the day seemed to follow us in every way shape and form we did well to restrict Northern Districts with some dropped catches and some missed bowling executions we struggled to contain our opposition. At the death we thought we’d secured a lucky win but were advised that we’d received a 5 run penalty for time restrictions and this led to a super over. Unfortunately, we went down but a real credit to the young quicks who stood up in difficult circumstances.
In Round 5 we played arch rivals Campbelltown Ghosts at Bankstown. We compiled 298 at the overs with excellent knocks from Mansukh Singh 48 and Zeeshaan Ahmed 51. But once again Cameron Middleton stole the show with a magnificent knock of 100. Justin Felsch was also great with a quick fire 50 off 37 balls. We knew the job was only half done and that proved correct as Campbelltown shot towards our target only losing their third wicket at 255 and still having one batsman on 100 not out. But, cricket is a funny game and our young quicks Ryan Freeman and Blake Pearson, led by the reliable Dayne Heward, saw the Dogs pull off a miracle win. Dayne took the leadership role with a match winning 7 wickets and the other two

youngRound 6 was our last game of the season v Hawkesbury at Bensons Lane Hawkesbury. Rain caused some adverse conditions resulting in some PG matches being abandoned including conference leaders Blacktown Mounties. As this news came in we most certainly grew some hunger to get on and try and wrap up a win and finish first. We lost the toss and no surprise were sent in to bat. The wicket was very slow but we crawled our way. After more rain delays we eventually took the field ready to constitute a match. With Hawkesbury chipping away at us all the way it was once again the young quicks and our experienced spinners who dried up the runs and took the wickets. A mention to young tall quick Brady Polkinghorne who in his first PG game took a handy 3-16 off 8.5 overs. Dayne Heward and Blake Pearson who also chipped in with some reliable bowling but it was our spinners who did the damage in the middle overs. Ryan Clark bowled 10 overs 3-31 and really stole the game from Hawkesbury with his spin twin Tom Sowden tearing his leggies and embarrassing the batsmen with his near unplayable wrong’un. In the end a comfortable win that put us top of the table in our conference.
With the finals being knock out format, the competition table meant nothing with Fairfield and Penrith both advancing through after finishing 3rd and 4th. Our game against Penrith was disappointing to say the least we lost the toss and were sent out to bowl with some costly dropped catches and poorly executed bowling plans to start with we did well to bring it back to restrict Penrith to 219. With the low total set we took nothing for granted as most of us knew scoreboard pressure is a big contender especially in underage cricket this certainly proved to be a difficult task, we started off strong as any other game but shortly fell in a heap. Some poor shot selection mixed with some excellent bowling and plans set by Penrith we were out of ideas and collapsed for 157.
While this was an unfortunate way to end such a fantastic season I personally enjoyed every moment as Coach. With only Dayne Heward moving on next year, I’m excited to see what the 2020/2021 season will hold for this young group of talented players. Some really promising signs and a special mention to the Brady, Blake and Ryan for stepping up when Brad and Liam left on state and national duties. Even though the unfortunate end it was still a successful year for the PG side finishing first in our conference laying a good platform for our campaign next season. A. huge thank you to Shane Cormack who was there every Sunday preparing the drinks and doing all the behind the scenes work. And last but not least thanks to our scorer Ron Heward who was there week in week out working the books and laptops. Your effort doesn’t go unnoticed mate so thank you on behalf of the 2019/2020 BDCC Poidevin Gray Squad.
The club fielded sides in 13 separate competitions covering Women’s Premier Cricket, Sixers Cricket League and Youth Championships representative teams. We also continued to have a high number of representative players across all grade/age groups which is an excellent reward for the development of our players over recent seasons. The experience that our many talented younger players have gained over recent years and the consequent improvement in skills and confidence was certainly on show on many occasions during this season.
This season Bankstown Sports made the finals in 6 of the competitions we entered with the highlight being 2nd Grade’s triumph in their T20 Final against St George-Sutherland played at North Sydney Oval. In that match JadeErrington reinforced her potential with a PlayeroftheFinal performance, top scoring with 85 runs. 2nd Grade also made the top 4 in the 50 over competition although unfortunately the final series was abandoned due to COVID-19. 3rd Grade reached the finals in both competitions – their semifinal in the T20 competition was unfortunately washed out
while they were defeated by Gordon in a close match in the 40 over competition. In that semifinal ChloeButler was outstanding scoring 51no and taking two wickets. Our Under 15 team in the Sydney Premier competition were also placed 4th and only lost one game in the home & away competition to the eventual premiers, the undefeated Penrith team. They should have finished higher, however, were unlucky to experience the highest number of washouts during the season.
Our Under 15 Spring Sixers side reached the Final, however, were also unfortunate to be washed out. Our club also,
once again, provided every player in both the Bankstown DCA Mollie Dive (U13) and Margaret Peden (U15) Representative teams. Both these teams performed very well each winning 4 of their 7 matches and being placed just outside the top 4.
In season 2019-20 the club continued to invest in our junior players, and it was very pleasing to see an increasing number of players now extending their cricket into senior grade teams. Our Premier Cricket (1st, 2nd and 3rd Grade) teams are now regularly made up of players who have made their way through our junior ranks – it is very rewarding for everyone involved in the club to see our “home grown” juniors showing their talents. It demonstrates that the club’s Player Pathway,
which has been in place for a number of seasons, is allowing junior players the opportunity to develop their cricketing skills and giving them opportunities at higher levels. Unfortunately, the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic closed down all cricket operations at the end of the season and prevented the selection of the Cricket NSW Academy 2020-21 squads. It was expected that a large number of our players would again have featured in these squads.
In regard to the talent development at the club, special mention must be made to our coaching staff this season again led by our dedicated and selfless ClubCoachRobMack. Rob did a brilliant job in investing his coaching expertise in all players – the coaching leadership Rob
has provided over recent seasons has contributed significantly towards the development of our junior players.
Thank you also to a growing number of our senior players past and present who have acted as coaching assistants to Rob including ClubLegend ThereseStewartand1st GradersRhiannonDick,Laura WrightandEmmaNewman. Therese’s experience gained from opening the bowling for Australia was invaluable in her coaching, Rhiannon honed the batting, bowling and fielding skills of a number of junior girls, Laura started up her own wicketkeeping academy – an area that was in need of focus at the club while Emma once again mentored many of our younger players. The experience and coaching of all these ladies
was invaluable and it is great to see club stalwarts giving back to the club – the commitment and dedication shown by these ladies was very much appreciated.
Thank you also to 2nd Grade Coach BrendanDunne, and parent coaches including AthavanNatkunamanickam, PaulStathis,StephenPeters andVenkateshThirupathy who shared their expertise at training and on game day. Special mention to ChloeButler who also passed on her skills to girls not much younger than herself – Chloe is already a terrific club person.
Finally, acknowledgement must also be given to other parents including ScottFraser, ClaireSpencer,LynStathis, BrookeButler,DeniseMartin andCraigStevens who
managed teams so well and to our brilliant scorers Kerrie DickandJenniferCampbell who were outstanding and so reliable in their roles. It takes many people to make a great club – and there were times also when other parents put their hands up to assist when required such as when the club provided outstanding lunches at home matches. We continue to be extremely fortunate to have so many people who are willing to assist in every dimension of the club’s administration & game day activities – this support is very much appreciated.
Once again this season a number of players achieved elite level selections highlighted by our two Australian representatives Ashleigh GardnerandErinBurns
Ashleigh has established herself in the top order of the World Cup winning team. Special congratulations to Erin whose selection came after many years of effort and endeavours. The club is very proud of these two ladies who are representing at the highest level in the World’s best team. SarahAley also added to her long history playing for the NSW Breakers and the Sydney Sixers. Sarah has become a key player for the Breakers since debuting in 2005 and is one of the most successful players in the history of the Australian domestic competition. Every time Sarah played for our club this season it was no surprise that the rest of the team lifted to perform at its best.
The club was also very fortunate to have KatieMack return for a number of matches – Katie showed her class with two brilliant half centuries. This season Katie represented the ACT and the Adelaide Strikers in the WBBL. Finally, one of our most gifted younger players MaddiePenna made her debut at the 1st class level when she was selected for both the ACT
and the Melbourne Stars in the WBBL. At the Underage State level AngelinaGenford,Hayley ElliottandEmilyLawler represented the NSW Metro Under 18’s and TahliaDunne the NSW Under 15 Metro team. All these players have a very bright future in cricket.
Our club also congratulates the Bankstown Men’s Cricket Club on another successful
season including winning the Premier Cricket Club Championship and the 2nd Grade Premiership which is an amazing result. We are very appreciative of the continued support we receive from the Men’s Club – BSWCC is extremely fortunate to be associated with such a wonderful Men’s Club.

annual reports - our History
Every annual report of our cricket club since its inauguration in 1951 is now bound into A4 volumes for both safe-keeeping and to preserve the rich history of our cricket club. All past and present members - and even those doing research on how cricket developed in the Bankstown region - are welcome to peruse and use these bound copies. While all of the recent annual reports are all still, and will continue to be, available on our website in digital format as pdf files, we will continue to add to these hard copy versions for future reference.
