dolescents need an ‘invitational learning environment’ as this will enable them to develop both cognitively and academically.

LAST WEEK YEAR 11 AND 13 HAD THE ENTIRE SECONDARY SCHOOL TO THEMSELVES AND HOW DID THEY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS? Firstly, for the entire week, no-one had to queue at the Snack Bar, Noodle Bar or Canteen. This was a real bonus and students took full advantage as high levels of concentration and focus made them particularly hungry!

Year 13 had the opportunity to use their purpose-built Senior Studies space to work independently, and, at times, collaboratively, to complete a range of IB tasks. How different did they feel from the start to the end of the week? I was expecting Year 13 to say that they started Monday feeling very stressed, as they mapped out the week with an extensive ‘to do’ list. I was surprised to hear that they felt positive at the start of the week, just knowing that they had no other distractions and the capacity to focus on completing their personal plans for the week.

SO HOW WELL DID IT WORK WITH ALL YEAR 13 STUDENTS BEING IN ONE SPACE FOR THE WEEK? Very well, is the short answer. The large well-designed space they occupy feels like that of a university. The furniture is flexible and so some students chose to sit in larger groups, others in smaller groups. Some used the desk dividers, even decorating them with a few home comforts. Some preferred to work in a more isolated space in one of the ‘goldfish’ bowl rooms. A few students even chose to move the tables to sit alone, or near windows to access natural light. Everyone found their own space and way of working that was best for them.

All students, wherever they were working, had green plants visible to them. Plants in workspaces have been shown to reduce tension, anxiety and fatigue, as well as increase productivity. Perfect for our Senior students, but it is also one of the many benefits of the campus that we have here at Bangkok Patana, having such an abundance of greenery.

Guests and visitors always comment on this, and wherever you are on campus, we all benefit from the various designs inspired by nature, or ‘biophilic’ designs. Where spaces include natural elements, the 2015 Human Spaces Report identifies that humans are more creative. Kaplan’s attention restoration theory suggests that seeing nature can support improved concentration, as the brain alters its mode of processing. A human-centric perspective is so important in the design process of a school, as there is great psychological value to being in a pleasant environment, as we work better when that is the case.

SO HOW ELSE WERE OUR STUDENTS PSYCHOLOGICALLY ENGAGED DURING THE EXAMINATION AND COMPLETION WEEK? Being together with a similar focus creates interdependence and a strong collective identity. Students use membership of a group to build their sense of self. This is one of the reasons why Year 11 students could be found sitting on the same chair, at the same workspace in the Library or breakout area, with the same group of peers, pretty much for the entire

week. Working with others that they know, and can feel supported by, is important for a successful learning environment.

We use membership of a group as a key part of our social identity, to build our sense of self. Working collaboratively to revise can be good for students’ health – being engaged and absorbed in quality revision with peers can promote psychological well-being, and if students are happy, they will perform better. For some, the occasional game of table tennis during their break helped too!

Parents are always nervous about students having study leave for the first time, as they are unsure how focused students will be when they are away from the usual classroom routines. Students need opportunities to make meaningful connections with their peers, as this supports their social-emotional needs and development, and, is all part of the natural transitioning away from the adult anchor points in their life. Students also need to know and experience trust, as this enables them to learn to trust themselves. However, we also know that our Year 11s (and Year 13s) are still developing their emotional brains, and, will continue to do so for a few years yet; they are relative novices in decision-making and reasoned judgement. So, rest assured, we had our experienced teachers who were on hand to mentor and guide them, as well as providing access to a counsellor in our other newly-designed space, the Hub. So, going back to the start of this piece, it is clearly evident that Bangkok Patana very much fulfils the criteria of being an ‘invitational learning environment’; our Year11and13 students had a very successful and highly productive week.

Mathematics Students Face Challenges in Jakarta

Junsu (David) Kang, 12F he SEAMC Senior competition in Jakarta, Indonesia, was an enthralling experience that allowed us to compete with mathematicians from different countries in Asia. Throughout the competition, we were faced with rounds that required us to not only apply our mathematics knowledge, but also to think strategically and creatively to approach the questions. For me, the most memorable part of the rounds was the innovation round, in which our collaboration group had to construct a boat to travel over the pool with limited resources and time.

This was an engaging challenge that allowed us to cooperate with students from different schools and come up with ideas on which model would be the most mathematically suitable for the round. SEAMC was a great opportunity to enjoy Mathematics with others and gave everyone a memorable experience.

Who are the Junior Delegates?

T

o become a Junior Delegate, first, the candidates had to send in an email explaining how we could contribute to the school once we became Junior Delegates. Next, we had to be nominated by our peers. Finally, all of the candidates went through an interview with Mr. Meadows and Ms. Perriam, where we were asked questions about how we worked in groups and why we were suited to the role.

The Junior Delegates work as a group to prepare assemblies during tutorial, as well as activities for the Year 9 Residential trip. In addition, we are responsible the KS3 dances which are really fun to organize. We also help out with events such as the university fairs. Most importantly, aside from the bonus of eating free food, we learn to work as a team and collaborate as well as gaining leadership skills.

Year 6 Tests their Senses with Visiting Author Duncan Ferguson, Year 6 Teacher

ear 6 students had a unique writing experience with visiting author, Steve Swinburne. His style of writing is narrative non-fiction, and he has a particular interest in environmental issues which ties in very nicely with the current Year 6 Unit of Learning, Back to Nature.

The key message was to write about your passion and to make the writing engaging for the reader by filling it with interesting detail. Mr Swinburne told students that if you block off one of your senses, the others become stronger. The students blindfolded themselves or closed their eyes and listened to nature. After a few minutes, they wrote down all the sounds and smells they had noticed; these notes were used to start a piece of writing about Bangkok.

Foundation Board Committed to Good Governance Shana Kongmun, Communications Coordinator

A

s part of their commitment to good governance, the Foundation Board held a training session for all Board members and for the first time, Sub-committee members, with a facilitator from the UK. The specialist worked with the members to ensure that the good governance practises in place were in line with the requirements for the CIS five year accreditation review requirements.

Governors are at the heart of how a school operates, and the governing body's main role is to help raise standards of achievement and help the school maintain standards, set targets for the future. Additionally, good governance includes helping the school respond to the needs of the parents and the wider community. The key strands of good governance include oversight of finances, legal compliance, strategic governance adapting to change, and monitoring the performance of the school.

Bangkok Patana’s Foundation Board reported that the facilitator found that the procedures and systems currently in place to maintain and ensure good governance met all requirements. Additionally Foundation Board members hold strategic planning meetings where they brainstorm about what the school should look like in five years and ten years.

Chess Whiz Represents Thailand in World Youth Chess Olympiad

C

hawit Asavasaetakul, Year 11, was chosen to represent Thailand in the World Youth Under-16 Chess Olympiad as part of the Thailand National Team for the third straight year. He played in Corum, Turkey with 51 teams from 40 countries over a ten day period. The Thai team performed well against the top youth players in the world.

Chawit began playing chess at the age of 11 when a classmate needed a chess partner to play against during lunch break. He then joined the Chess ECA and developed a passion for chess, shifting his interest from computer games to chess. Chawit won first place in this year’s Thailand National Championships.

“Chess is a fun game that everyone should try. It’s not about winning or losing. It’s about challenging your own mind. Also, it’s a hobby that will last a life time.” Chawit Asavasaetakul

Year 7 Student Takes Championship in Thai Youth Basketball Invitationals Chupit Chutitum

Y

ear 7 student Rylan Gulkin recently played on the winning team in the Thai Youth Basketball Invitationals, taking the top trophy against the Hang Tuah team from Indonesia. Ryan’s love for the sport pushed him to join the Charuwat Academy basketball team, one of the top Thai primary teams in Thailand in April where helped the team to win third place in the Under 12 Ubon Family Basketball tournament. He began playing at the age of six years old and dreams of playing professionally in the US NBA. Rylan also joined some of his older friends on the Bangkok Rookies team for the Asia Pacific Youth Basketball Cup 2019 for the first time in October, representing Thailand’s Under 13 team. Bangkok Rookies earned 6th place among 20 teams from Asia Pacific countries as well as the USA. In September, he and teammates from Bangkok Stars participated and won 2nd place in the Under 12 division of the Brio Streetball 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament.

Bangkok Patana Students Take First and Second in Thai Nationals Kart Championship Martin Vliegen

T

his past weekend Taiyo (6J) and Jem (8G) Vliegen geared-up for the last race of the Thai Nationals Kart Championship. Heading to the Bira track, Jem was leading the championship followed by Taiyo.

Taiyo kept it exciting by qualifying on pole position closely followed by Jem at only 1/10 of a second. Throughout the race day, both competitors gave the spectators the battles they came for.

In the final, Jem started on pole position with Taiyo in third position. After a nail-biting race for the first position, Jem reached the chequered flag just ahead of Taiyo. Jem won this final round and was crowned the Thai Nationals Champion 2019.

Taiyo is the well deserved runner-up. Next season Jem moves up to Juniors and Taiyo will continue to aim for the title in the Mini class.

CA Block 2 commences on Monday 25th November. Parents can check the new bus number for their child on Sunday evening after 6.00 pm. Please help your child and Transport by informing them of their bus number in advance – remember, it may be a different bus number each day. Please kindly check that your child’s ECA schedule is correct.

UNI COUNSELORS’ CORNER

How to Become a Serious Contender in Uni Selection Sallyanne Lynch, Careers and Universities Counsellor

T

he Careers Counselling team at Bangkok Patana is always looking for ways to support our students in submitting the most compelling application possible - in an increasingly competitive field. We are so fortunate to have a steady flow of admissions officers visiting us from leading educational institutions across the globe. From the frequent conversations we are having with the people who read and evaluate our students’ applications, one thing has become clear – we need to get our students to read and extend their knowledge, beyond the confines of their IB course syllabus, if they are going to really stand out in the application pool.

From a counselling perspective, when it comes to composing the strongest reference possible to support an application, it becomes challenging to suggest that a student is ‘intellectually curious’ and a ‘critical thinker’ without evidence of their genuine engagement with their area of academic interest.

In recent weeks, I have enjoyed meeting with Year 12 students to check in on how they are settling into the IB and start to gauge their interests in terms of possible university/college destinations and areas of specialisation. These conversations are always so energising as students are just beginning to understand the wealth of opportunities and choices available to them. I find it exciting to support the next wave of Bangkok Patana students as they make some tentative steps in preparation to exit the ‘Patana bubble’ on their journey towards further education… and adult life.

What I find exciting about having the opportunity to chat to Year 12 students now, as they are just beginning their IB journey, is encouraging them to start to really, genuinely, bite into the subject area they are interested in. Think about how much an intellectually curious young mind can absorb over 12 months if they make time to seriously delve into the areas they are interested in! It’s time to start to own their interests and earn that genuine consideration as a compelling candidate.

I ask all students to tell me how they are exploring their area of interest. Conversations soon turn to any wider reading they may be doing. Our students are aware that university admissions value candidates who show subject knowledge and enthusiasm, but often don’t know where to start. Here are some useful tips to support our students: • You have to build some time into your daily routine to tap into the news - especially news and developments related to your area of interest. Even 10 minutes of reading a day is fine. I talk with students about finding a time where this could happen - often the morning commute to school (instead of watching YouTube or mindlessly clicking away at social media) offers a window of time for busy students to check out BBC News or investigate the specific BBC pages on Business, Health, Tech, Science... whatever their interest may be. Building in the habit of browsing and reading the news media around their area of interest, students will inevitably stumble across a story,

a thread of something in particular that piques their curiosity - I urge them to follow the story as it may unfold over time in the media and click on to similar stories.

• The HEAP Guide to UK University Admissions urges all students to become informed and up to date with the current conversations and developments in their area of interest.

• Students pursuing the Sciences are told it is almost mandatory that they read journals to keep up to date with scientific developments and extend their subject knowledge beyond the IB syllabus.

• Popular courses such as Economics, Business and Marketing would expect competitive candidates to be up-to-date with global and regional economic issues. I encourage our students interested in Business to build in daily habits of reading The Bangkok Post to better familiarise themselves with regional economic issues. ‘BBC Business online’ and ‘The Economist’ are accessible and essential reading for any student wanting to be considered for a business-related pathway at competitive universities. We keep copies of The Economist in the school library.

• Students keen on following their interest in The Arts or Humanities should be naturally to inclined to be reading around the history of their area of interest and keeping up-to-date with relevant magazines and appropriate literature.

• Bangkok Patana has recently invested in purchasing some amazing Apps for students to access a plethora of online magazines, newspapers and journals. I have been encouraging our students to download the Press Reader app which gives them free access to download journals and magazines in categories including: Art, Business & Current Affairs, Computers & Technology, Design, Fashion, Gaming, History & Science, News, Photography, Religion, and much more.

One important reminder to students that it’s not simply about listing off a whole range of articles and reports they may have read, it is the ability for a student to reflect on their reading and share how they have engaged with it that is of interest to University Admissions. Our students should ask themselves: Did the reading trigger a curiosity to explore different genres perspectives on a certain topic or event? To what extent did the reading complement or contradict the learning the taking place their IB classes? How did the reading work to stimulate their own investigations and research? What has the student done, as a result of their reading, to go about discovering more? We recommend that each student keep a journal of their reading and the thoughts, ideas and observations they made. This will help them immensely when the student begins the process of crafting their university application.

More than ever, to be taken as a serious contender in university selection, students need to own their area of interest.

Evidencing their enquiring mind and being more aware of the world issues that are particularly relevant to their interests will strengthen the quality of their university application - preparing them to engage with the conversations taking place around them in the classroom and corridors of their next study destination.

ALUMNI EXPERIENCES: Dr Ashley Siribhadra Grad ‘14

M

y favourite memories are of the residentials, I just loved them. The school facilities are great, and they all get used! I just remember it was a nice environment to learn in, it was friendly, and you weren’t afraid to ask questions or say stupid things because you knew it would be fine. I made a lot of good friendships at the school too, and I remain friends with many of them. One friend even flew up from London to visit me in Dundee, we’ve been friends from Year 5. I made really meaningful friendships here.

Bangkok Patana prepared me for university by showing me the importance of being on time – emphasising the good things that come from being punctual. There was a lot of overlap from here to what we did in university. I studied medicine at university – it’s an MBChB (a five year degree) – a Bachelor’s in Medicine and Surgery at University of Dundee and graduated this past summer. I knew I wanted to do medicine, I think it was in Year 11, there was a Careers’ internships and I shadowed at Bumrungrad Hospital through the school. I enjoyed it and that confirmed my feelings. It was one of those experiences that I remember quite well.

In ten years I see myself as still being a doctor, hopefully I will have specialised by then and the dream is to be quite good at what I do. I want to come back to Thailand and make a change for better for people. I want to bring innovation that I’ve learned elsewhere and apply it to Thailand, I wouldn’t mind working rurally.

he Paris Institute of Political Studies (French: Institut d’études politiques de Paris) is more commonly known as Sciences Po and is set in several buildings in the heart of Paris round the Boulevard Saint-Germain in the 6th and 7th arrondissements. Near the Seine, the Ile de la social sciences with emphasis on civic, linguistic, artistic, Cite, and Luxembourg Gardens Sciences Po was estaband digital training. Stormy Weather’s Effect on Anxiety Karnsiree (Ling Ling) Chen, 13I

S

tormy weather has been reported to have positive effects on anxiety, helping to soothe an agitated mental state.

Some patients have attributed this to the social expectations dissolving with rainy weather: they have the opportunity to take walks in the rain or to just stay at home during thunderstorms.

Expectations from other people are lessened, and the pressure to go out and interact is removed. Another reason is similar to the literary device ‘pathetic fallacy’ where the environment reflects the mood of the character. In this case, stormy weather can reflect the patient’s internal mood, providing a more comfortable and seamless link between her psyche and the outside world. This helps to soothe anxiety as everything feels familiar.

A post about the phenomenon on Reddit's "Anxiety" channel corroborated this finding with more than a hundred responses in a week— many users said that rainy dark days were their favourite days of the week, particularly if it was a cold rainy day in the middle of summer. Some have even reported that thunder and lightning make them feel safe and protected.

Clinically, the reason for this is still being investigated and largely unknown: but the closest thing to an explanation for the preference of stormy weather is the ‘reverse seasonal affective disorder” or "summer depression," a type of depression which is intensified by a seasonal shift. Usually, it is triggered by fall or winter, when temperatures dip and daylight gets sparser. But a small proportion of cases are summertime ones, with a higher prevalence in particularly hot climates. Psychologists have partially attributed this sense of comfort to the brain’s natural craving for sensory input. Rain helps to cater to this longing as it produces a sound similar to white noise which the brain then receives a tonic signal from which subsequently decreases the need for as much input as normal. This settles the brain and calms us down.

Conversely, bright sunlight has a similar effect in keeping stimulated.

This phenomenon has earned the fond name of "pink noise," which refers to the noise which has enough variables in frequency to engage the subconscious but not enough to distract or disturb. Some examples are rain, wind, and rainforest noises are like this. In labs, pink noise has been tested and been shown to have a positive effect on sleep and memory. The omnipotence of nature makes our troubles feel small in comparison to the might of nature. This has the tendency to show people the world in a different light, making their problems pale in comparison to the scale of the world we live in. As a result, problems and anxiety begin to take up less space in our frame of mind.

Lastly, rain can also create a feeling of empathy: as if the rain is understanding of personal sorrows. On a perfect day, people can feel more alone and lost in their thoughts. This understanding has also been reflected in different pieces of literature, where authors allude to weather to set the tone for the prose.

#138: Just Wait a Second I felt a tinge of guilt after reading the short story below. Before you read it yourself take a moment to think about how many times the people we love have sought our attention, only to find that the technology in our hands is demanding more of our attention. I find myself, too often for my liking, saying “just wait a second or give me a minute” to my children. Most of the time it’s to reply to a conversation on WhatsApp or finish off an email. Is it really that important to send that text or click ‘like’ at that precise moment in time? Often, it’s a shallow interaction with the other person, especially when you compare it to the potential that of the face-to-face opportunity provided right in front of you….

Last night I felt a serious pang of remorse. My son Chase called me from college.

Frankly, I assumed it was a quick check-in or perhaps an ask of some sort. I was editing footage at the time, and well, I kept editing while we talked. Over the course of the call, I realised he had called to really have a solid conversation.

But by the time I realised it the call was soon ending.

When we hung up, I had a pit in my stomach. I realised I was only half listening. And, on top of that, it was pretty obvious I was not fully present by the tone of my voice, the cadence of my responses. It was strange, but all on its own my mind started playing back to me my exact half-hearted responses and my delayed “yeahs.”

I miss him, and I'm kicking myself for not having pushed aside the computer mouse….

The first Wednesday of every month you can find him in the PTG Room from 8:00 - 9:00am to answer any tech queries and offer advice and support on parenting in this digital age.
