Bangkok Patana School, in collaboration with the PTG, would like to invite you and your children, aged nine and above, to a special screening of the awardwinning documentary, Screenagers – Growing up in the Digital Age.

T

his is a one hour documentary created by Dr Delaney Ruston - physician, filmmaker and mother of two children. She turned the camera on her own family struggling with balancing the usage of technology in her home. The video explores the issues pre-teens and teens experience with social media, video games, academics, and screen time. Through her own story, other parents’ stories from across the country, and interviews with psychologists and brain scientists, Screenagers reveals how the inappropriate use of technology can potentially impact child development and offers solutions on how adults can empower children to best navigate the digital world and achieve a healthy balance between online and offline activities.

ESS in the Jungles of Kaeng Krachan!

I

mmediately upon return from our restful Christmas holidays, Mr Smith and Ms Ferguson took their Year 12 Environmental Systems and Societies classes to Kaeng Krachan National Park in Petchaburi Province, southeast of Bangkok.

The students spent the better part of four days exploring and investigating various ecosystems of the national park. Whilst applying environmental investigation methods learned in class to the real world was the overarching goal, there were many objectives of this expedition. In one activity, students measured abiotic factors such as dissolved oxygen, stream velocity, total dissolved solids, pH, temperature, light intensity in a pristine rainforest stream and tried to see connections between these factors and biodiversity or abundance of macroinvertebrates in the stream.

On our fourth and final day in Kaeng Krachan, students devised their own research questions and participated in a half day individual field study where they applied the skills learned over the preceding days and collected data to answer their questions. The Year 12s then shared copious amounts of data and returned to school to write up their findings in the form of a practice Internal Assessment lab write up.

After returning and reflecting on our experiences in this amazing ecosystem, students commented on how much they loved their time in the forest. Most students felt that

Perhaps this quote from Andy Gatchalian (Year 12) sums up how our students felt about their Kaeng Krachan experience: “…I’ll be honest and say that initially, I really wasn’t looking forward to it. Solely because, science as a subject isn’t something I’m very passionate about. However, I left feeling very satisfied and happy, with a deeper appreciation for ecology, the earth and ESS as a subject in general. I

“I am confident that I was watching first-hand the next generation of field ecologists or nature enthusiasts, and therefore conservationists, evolve right before my very eyes.”

As their instructors, I think I can speak for both Caroline and myself, we were completely inspired by our students as well. They took their investigations very seriously and conducted themselves with professionalism and passion. I am confident that I was watching first-hand the next generation of field ecologists or nature enthusiasts, and therefore conservationists, evolve right before my very eyes. It was a true honour and privilege to work with these amazing young people in the field.

We have a new school publication which will be sent to each family next week. The Stewardship report is an overview of the organisation and operational activities at Bangkok Patana School.

Year 7s Fishy Findings A

team of Year 7 students have been challenged to advise the Foundation Stage on how to install a fish tank, what equipment they would need and which fish would best suit the environment. The small group of Secondary students presented their findings to the youngsters confidently and were able to answer lots of questions as well as providing them with a print out of their recommendations.

Mr Dan and the Foundation Stage children were really impressed and are looking forward to getting their fish tank installed soon!

CATs Corner

O

n the 15th - 17th January, STOP held their Campaign Days to raise awareness about human trafficking, considered by many as the modern form of slavery. Through human-trafficking themed activities such as a VR simulation and an interactive game, STOP highlighted the plight of trafficked victims to the school community.

In the Virtual Reality simulation, VR lenses we used and 360 degree videos that depicted a typical trafficking journey to help students experience the unease, fear and violence that a victim faces. We also ran a hugely popular ‘escape’ simulation game, where people were tied to a chair and challenged to escape in under a minute.

It was a hugely successful campaign - thank you to all the STOP members who helped out, and all members of the Bangkok Patana community who participated in the event! If you’re interested in joining STOP, please sign up for our ECA! Sakooltipaya (Koko) Lotharukpong, Year 12

his week, Forward Film, one of the fledgling CATs currently growing in the CAT Incubator ECA, tried their hand at a mini campaign event. The group found out first-hand what is involved in organising a Campaign Day including finding out who needs to be contacted to book tables and chairs, how to put a notice on the Daily Notices and how to reflect on an event to make sure that it is better next time.

Forward Film realised that although their promotion was good, it takes more than a poster to engage with the students at Bangkok Patana.

For many students, the Campaign Day is a steep learning curve. The safety of the CAT Incubator means that it is okay to make mistakes so that when you launch as a real CAT, you are fully prepared for success.

RIGHT TO READ

W

e are a new CAT group who believe that education is one of the most essential possessions any child should have. Right to Read aspire to improve access to education by providing books to disadvantaged children. Youngsters who are exposed to a wide range of vocabulary are able to improve their understanding and develop their creativity. Right to Read believe that improved exposure to story books will help children have a better education and the ability to broaden their future pathways.

Our first goal is to support Thomas House, a school in

Northern Thailand for children with learning disabilities.

We will be translating children’s story books from English into Thai and donating them to the school. This will help the children and the teachers improve their language development.

Transport Corner Weekly news from the Transport Department

Please note that ECAs for Years 1 – 6 finish today.

Secondary ECAs will continue until Friday 2nd February.

Please read the following information and plan your transport arrangements in advance for the departure and return dates of your child/ren’s Residential Visit week.

Please ensure to email Transport with any changes in advance.

TRANSPORT AND ECA INFORMATION FOR PRIMARY STUDENTS IN YEARS 3 – 6: • During Primary Residential Visit weeks, there will be no ECAs except for Selective Tennis, Selective Gymnastics, TigerShark Swimming, Singapore Mandarin, Danish and Dutch.
