W

e hope all of our students will develop important values which will help them to position themselves as global citizens. Near to the end of last term, leaders responsible for the curriculum and pastoral care of our students shared examples through which our students can experience our values of global citizenship. A few of these are shared on these pages. I often comment here on our plans for environmental awareness and action, so this week I share some examples of how we encourage some of the other values such as integrity, a sense of ethics, being willing to volunteer, and building intercultural understanding. Some of these things have been in place for a long time, while others are new.

Thank you to all colleagues across the school who are innovating, adapting, or refocussing learning experiences to fulfil our Vision statement.

Foundation Stage - All children in Foundation Stage are introduced to the ‘Peaceful Problem Solving’ approach as a tool for solving conflict – this supports them to manage their feelings, behaviour, social interactions and independence. This continues into Year 1.

All Foundation Stage children show independence with their snack routines – they pour their own milk, prepare their own snacks, tidy up, and wash their bowls and cups every day. This develops personal responsibility, encourages independence and builds a sense of respect for our immediate environment.

Year 9 - In Drama, the students research a real life situation based on one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and then develop a piece of verbatim theatre to illustrate the issues raised to an audience.

Year 5 students have learned about Human Rights, and more specifically, Children’s Rights. The Water Crisis topic referred back to these, as did ongoing PSHE lessons. Powerful questions can now be framed, such as ‘if these are children’s rights, what is your own responsibility to uphold them?’

Year 8 - In their Connections project, students come out of their normal timetable to collaborate with students from other classes, in large groups of 40 or so, to create their perfect island community in response to a series of unpredictable events. In this multidisciplinary project, they learn much about politics, economics, and environmental issues, all the while developing integrity while seeking to make things better for their island community.

Year 12 and 13 students studying Theory Of Knowledge need to consider multiple perspectives (including those from different cultural vantage-points), The students become more alert to the different norms and values of different societies and appreciating that these aren’t fixed in time and place.

Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) is also very important to the IB Diploma Programme – helping students to develop as active and reflective volunteers, and this aim is also supported by the many CAT clubs. These clubs are increasingly linking with younger age groups across the entire school. Both CAS and CAT strands are actively supported by the Libraries.

All PE students in Senior Studies are given the opportunity to be active volunteers by co-coaching younger teams, and to work with students from less privileged schools through sports. Meanwhile, our eldest students of Thai volunteer for various events and activities through the calendar year which promote Thai culture (e.g. Songkran, Loy Krathong).

Child’s Play or Physics Experiment?

he 13th December 2017 was the annual Physics Trip, when a large majority of the Year 12s went to Dream World to pursue further knowledge in physics.

Why Dream World? Isn’t it a children’s amusement park? Well, school has always been a platform for learning, and our school especially has a large abundance resources and learning tools.

However, an important aspect of learning can also be found outside the classroom as well as offering these hard-working physics students some time to relax and take a break from the hardships of the IB. Before the trip, we were told to install an accelerometer onto our phones, and were given a workbook to complete on the day. To complete the workbook required us to go on certain rides with our accelerometer and take measurements of the ride’s acceleration to put into some equations, luckily no one’s phones dropped out of their pockets! Examples of this include: • How large is the maximum centripetal acceleration as you swing the meter?

• Using your value of maximum velocity from the accelerometer what is the maximum Kinetic Energy of the boat?

Our time at Dream World included exploring various exciting rides, as well as fun activities such as super splash, the Viking and bumper cars whilst simultaneously applying our physics knowledge in real life situations. We collected an abundance of data, and completed our workbooks, when we got back we discussed our findings.

One student, Ruben Kwant commented “Although I have been to Dream World before, I had a lot of fun and I think I even learnt something!”

I

was lucky enough to visit this beautiful mountain over the break, alas this in not one of my photographs – I wish it was. One thing you may notice is that I have not attributed the owner of the photograph – something that we ask members of our community to do when they are presenting. This is because the photo comes with a Creative Commons Zero (CC0) licence – completely free to be used for any legal purpose with no attribution required. I found this on a relatively new site called PEXELS. I encourage you to take a look at this site before going down the traditional Google images route.

ue to unforeseen external circumstances the Mercy Centre visit is cancelled for this month. The next visit will be on Fun Day (10th February) and they will need lots of volunteers. Please look out for a sign-up link in the next issue of CATs Corner!

nteract and RISE are planning the muchanticipated Fun Day Auction. We are looking for artwork donations. If you would like to donate please contact tale@patana.ac.th The auction was awesome last year and RISE were able to pay the full cost of a day at the beach in Hua Hin for 32 children from the Place of Grace. Interact were able to purchase craft items so that children in a village school can benefit from arts based learning.

They also provide arts and crafts activities for the Mercy Centre children when they visit.

None of these activities are possible without your donations and support at the auction.

AT Incubator is an ECA that supports groups of students who are passionate about a global or local issue and want to instigate change by starting a new Community Action Team. The purpose of the ECA is to support students in their feasibility studies, ideas development, setting objectives and general organisation to enable them to succeed as fully-fledged CATs next academic year. Over the next few weeks I would like to introduce them to you.

This week we highlight Forward Film. This group who want to change mind-sets through the use of film and help raise awareness of some of the big global issues facing young people today. For more information, take a look at their Firefly page here.

L

ater this month we are taking a group of Key Stage 3 and 4 students to Kuala Lumpur to participate in the FOBISIA Student Leadership Conference. Students will be delivering workshops on student leadership development and show how taking the lead on community action can have wide reaching benefits to the local and global community.

It is fantastic to see so many passionate Bangkok Patana students stepping outside their comfort zone and developing their skills in this way. Look out for the full report next month.

This course is designed for non -Thai speakers who have absolutely no previous experience of the Thai language.

The course will be taught in four blocks covering a total of 56 hours in one academic year. Students will learn how to greet and introduce themselves, as well as vocabulary for food, drinks and conversations about Thai culture, going shopping, asking for directions and time and date.
