Letter from the Head of School

Dear Bancroft Friends, When I accepted the headship of Bancroft School, I knew that getting to know the people of this community — and by that I mean both Bancroft and the Greater Worcester community — would be vital to any success I hoped to achieve. Like a coach who has a great playbook, I had Vision 2016 to define the strategic goals for our School. But without the trust and confidence of the players, I had no hope of furthering those goals.

Throughout the year, there were so many remarkable moments, including daily interactions with our amazing students, faculty, and staff, and a series of events that brought together families, alumni, and local leaders. What a team this has turned out to be. Together we have weathered transitions, celebrated wins, and formed strong relationships that will continue to deepen as we work together for the benefit of our students.

Extraordinary things can happen when a vision comes to fruition, and this issue of the Bulletin proves that. Our feature article about the Worcester Partnership shares the story of the ten first graders from Elm Park Community School who began the Partnership program in 2003. This year, all ten are college freshmen because people believed in them and gave them opportunities to shine. Also in this issue is a an update on our implementation of the strategic initiatives of Vision 2016. We have taken bold steps to enhance our programs, spaces, and teaching approach. This is a hugely exciting time for our School.

Included with the Bulletin is our Annual Report for 2014-2015. This listing is our chance to acknowledge and thank you for your support, which keeps Bancroft strong and makes our good work possible.

We should all take pride in what we have accomplished so far. The spirit of kindness and generosity that infuses this community is very special. BANCROFTNEWS Summer Study in Ecuador and the Galapagos A very exhilarated MaryAnn DeMaria, Bancroft US science teacher, shared the following message and photos after her adventure in South America last summer: “I just returned from a trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. I received a Fargo-Gauthier award that allowed me to visit the Galapagos with Ecology Project International, a non-profit organization that organizes student trips. I was able to travel with a school group from California in order to preview the trip. My goal is to offer a summer course in the Galapagos for Bancroft students that will combine wildlife ecology, tortoise biology, island biogeography, conservation, art, snorkeling, and hiking.”

MaryAnn’s goal is a reality now; the new Upper School course, “Field Research & Cultural Exchange in the Galapagos,” will take place in the summer of 2016. (For more information visit: www.bancroftschool.org/ galapagos) MaryAnn’s photo descriptions give an excellent idea of the exciting adventures that await the students:

“I just hiked up the peak on Bartolome Island, a small island off the coast of Santiago Island. What you can see in the distance is the black lava flow on Santiago Island. We hiked on the lava flow later that day. On the right is the famous Pinnacle Rock, and Sullivan Bay. This is where I saw a marine iguana feeding under water, as well as sea turtles and white tip sharks!”

“The famous Blue-Footed Boobies on North Seymour Island. The female has two eggs under her and the male was protecting the nest from another male. There were also frigate birds nesting, and many sea lions.”

“This was my favorite part of the trip. We were working in the El Chato Reserve, on Santa Cruz Island, looking for giant tortoises.

When we found a tortoise, we measured its carapace length and width, plastron length, weight, elevation, longitude, and latitude. We also put a microchip in the rear left leg if the animal didn’t have one. The tortoise in the picture is a male who is over 180 years old and weighed over 400 pounds. The data we collected was given to Roberto, a park ranger in the Galapagos National Park system.”

Interim Leaders for Lower School and HGP Bancroft is pleased to have Beth Beckmann, M.Ed. (left), serving as our interim Head of Lower School, and Candace Anderson, M.B.A., M.Ed. (right), as the interim Director of the Hope Graham Program — the two positions vacated when Head of Lower School Jyoti Datta accepted a position with the Worcester Public Schools this summer. “With these two terrific leaders in place, we have time to fully explore our options and follow a thoughtful process to identify the long-term leaders for these two roles,” says Head of School Trey Cassidy. Beth is an experienced school leader who has served many roles as an educator and administrator in more than 40 years of independent school work, including six years working with Trey Cassidy at University Liggett School. Candace has been the Associate Director of the Hope Graham Program (HGP) since it was established in 2011 to serve the needs of bright, capable Bancroft students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. She is excited to be filling this important role while continuing her work as the School’s Director of Academic Support.

Bancroft Families in Beijing Early this summer, when Trey Cassidy and Robin Silverman hosted a gathering in Beijing for the families of our international students, they didn’t realize how much it would mean to all involved. More than 50 students, parents, and guests traveled from all over China to be there. As the mother of freshman Helen Yu explained, “It’s not easy for parents to decide to send their children to spend these important four years in a totally new place.” For Robin, who directs the International Program, one of the most important parts was “the opportunity to speak to parents face-to-face and reassure them that we are taking good care of their children.” The parents have now set up a chat group to connect with each other and the School. Although the international students are 7,000 miles from home, they and their families are an important part of our local and global community.

It’s Really a Small World While in China this summer to interview prospective Bancroft students, Robin Silverman, was walking along a street in Shanghai and bumped into Bruce Pollock— literally! Turns out Bruce, Bancroft’s former Head of Upper School, was chaperoning a group of students from his school in California. To prove it truly is a small world, they stopped for a photo.

Before flying home, Robin made a stop in Hong Kong to have dinner with ex-pat alumni, Meredith Brooks ’00 and Mia Pearson Williams ’99. It makes you wonder which Bancroft friends you might see when walking down any street in the world!

16 TAMY Nominations, 4 Wins for US Musical It’s common knowledge that Bancroft’s Performing Arts Department puts on phenomenal theatrical productions — and they have the hardware to prove it! The 2015 Upper School Musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” won four TAMY Awards out of an extraordinary 16 nominations. Presented by the Theatre at the Mount (TAM) at Mount Wachusett Community College, TAMY Awards celebrate exceptional musical theatre in area high schools. “It is great to be recognized for such a group effort,” said Director Chris Sheldon. “It’s a reflection of the hard work and dedication of the entire cast, production team, crew, and band.” TAM faculty attended and evaluated performances at 25 high schools before making their final decisions. They invited the nominees to attend a gala reception at TAM in May, where the winners were announced and received their awards. “It was like the Oscars or Tony Awards of high school,” said Chris.

Robo-teaching Bancroft alumna Adrienne Chodnowsky ’13 has the distinction of being Bancroft’s first robo-teaching assistant (TA). Projecting her image from Lehigh University, where she’s majoring in math with a theater minor, Adrienne controlled Bancroft’s iPad telepresence robot remotely, interacting with students in three different classes taught by Kim VanderSpek — Advanced Mathematical Inquiry (AMI), Tech Theater Costuming, and AP Calculus BC. The idea was sparked last summer, when Kim had a conversation with another former student, Alekos Robotis ’13, a math major at UC Berkeley. After chatting with some of her other former students, Kim put together a team of potential robo-TAs. A generous donor allowed Bancroft to purchase the robot, and Adrienne broke the ice in September. As we work to further integrate Bancroft’s Learning Laboratory Method throughout the curriculum, this technology opens up an abundance of rich opportunities for bringing outside expertise to campus.

FIRST CLASS

FUTURE The Original Ten Worcester Partnership Students Head to College

In 2003, ten six-year-olds from the Elm Park Community School became the first class of the Worcester Partnership program. Now 12 years later, all ten are beginning their freshman year of college.

They credit the program with helping them become the people they are today and with allowing them to envision their futures filled with choices and opportunities.

As they began the Worcester Partnership, it is unlikely that the children or their families could have predicted the impact this program would have on their lives. There were two people, however, who never doubted the outcome — Bancroft’s Charlie Aleksiewicz, whose 40+ years at Bancroft have placed him in roles from teacher to athletic director to Partnership director, and Jo Herron Truesdell ’72, a Kindergarten teacher at Bancroft since 1977. For the past 12 years “Mr. A.” and “Mrs. T.,” as the kids call them, have worked to build and grow this program, which has impacted the lives of so many underserved children.

“Hey, Jo! Do you have a minute?”

Those were the words Charlie casually called out to Jo Truesdell one day in 2003. “It turned out that he was hatching a plan,” says Jo. “What about,” he said to her, “if you and a teacher from Elm Park public school spent a month in the summer working with Elm Park kindergartners? They’d focus on reading, writing, and math in the morning, and after lunch they’d hike, swim at the YMCA, and have cookouts. It would help the kids avoid summer learning loss, and ….”

“The more he talked,” recalls Jo, “the more excited he became, and I found it impossible not to be drawn in by his passion.

That ‘minute’ has turned into 12 years…and counting.”

Many other teachers have joined them since, and what makes the Partnership unique is their commitment to these children.

The teachers come back year after year. The students come

back year after year. Those first ten students quickly came to know they would be successful because the Partnership gave them opportunities, created experiences, and showed them that they have choices.

“This program made me who I am today.”

From the first time Yaniza Creamer stepped off the bus to attend the Worcester Partnership, she loved everything about Bancroft School. Being a six-year-old, she was especially enchanted with the playground. As it turned out, 12 years later she would walk across the stage within view of that same playground to accept her high school diploma as a member of Bancroft’s Class of 2015. In addition to being a member of the first Worcester Partnership class, Yaniza has another distinction: she was the first student to go through the entire Partnership program and later graduate from Bancroft.

Last summer, before heading off to Washington, DC, for her freshman year at American University, Yaniza stopped by the Bancroft campus to say goodbye to Mr. A. and Mrs. T., who’ve been there every step of the way. When asked what she wants people to know about the Partnership, Yaniza said simply, “The Worcester Partnership program made me who I am today. It educated me, but in a fun way, and I think everyone should experience education in that way. It challenged me every year to create projects and interact with grownups. I never really thought that interacting with grownups was educational, but it is. The program also made me want to attend Bancroft and I was very lucky to be able to do so.”

Malik Gedman, another of the first participants, shares the belief that he wouldn’t be the same person without the Partnership. “After I started the program I could envision myself in college, and always assumed I would get there.

Through the years, the program gives you so many life experiences that a lot of underprivileged kids aren’t exposed to. It helps you socially; it shows you the choices that are out there. You meet college students, and you’re exposed to people, experiences, and role models who give you the expectation of going to college.”

Malik’s three younger siblings are now in the program, and he wants them to have the same opportunities he did.

“My mom sometimes had to wake me up and tell me ‘Get up, you’re going to miss the bus!’ I’d be so disappointed if I missed the bus. I remember one time I missed it and I walked from Elm Park to Bancroft. My job now is to make sure my siblings keep coming.”

Malik is now enrolled in a bachelor’s program that starts with two years at Quinsigamond Community College (QCC) followed by two years at WPI, where he will graduate with a degree in medical bioengineering.

“They just keep getting on the bus.”

Originally, the Partnership was designed to end at sixth grade, but the students had other ideas. “I remember how sad I 12

was after my 6th grade year,” Malik says. “We had a nice graduation ceremony, but we didn’t want it to end. So the next summer, a lot of us just got on the bus, and Mr. A. let us stay.” As always, Mr. A. just rolled with it (“What was I going to do, turn them away?”). Malik became one of many Partnership “graduates” who took on a new role, working alongside the Bancroft high school students as a volunteer.

Over the years, Mr. A. and the teachers have expanded the curriculum to accommodate the older students. Most recently, the Partnership added a Middle School program that includes drama, technology, and community service units.

“Of course they will all go to college.”

Ask Mr. A. about “his kids” and he’ll beam with pride as he talks about each one. Like a proud papa, he reels off the list of Advanced Placement and honors classes they took in high school and the colleges they were accepted to. Last fall, Mr. A. reached out to each of the ten former Partnership students at the beginning of senior year and made sure they understood the college admission process. He invited WPI admission rep Eliza Michie Laurent ’01 to speak with them about the important steps to take while applying to college.

Commenting on the fact that that all ten of the first Partnership students are going to college, Jo Truesdell says simply, “It’s Mr. A. He expected them to go to college from

the start, so of course they expected to go to college. He brought them to Assumption College to watch basketball games when they were little so they would get a vision of themselves in college.” Today, these fine young adults are on their way, with nothing but choices ahead of them.

and Lesly Grullon (Anna Maria), and of course Josha, Kim, Malik, and Yaniza. We are proud of them and wish them luck. Mr. A. is already planning ways to keep in touch, and is organizing a cheering section at a WPI football game to cheer on Emmanuel, who is an offensive lineman.

Josha Cruz, who will be starting UMass–Amherst in January, says, “It’s not a coincidence we’re all going to good schools.

It is the positive influence of being involved with the Partnership and the people.”

“I have been teaching for almost 40 years, and of course I think the three Rs are vitally important,” says Jo. “However, in truth, the most important aspects of learning are the experiences we have and the connections we make with others — and that is why we all keep coming back here, summer after summer, and why this program is such a success.”

Kim Kha got in touch with Mr. A. to say, “I want you to know I really appreciate the care you showed about me entering college. It makes me really happy that you want me to do well in life!” Kim is completing a semester at QCC and will join Josha at UMass–Amherst in January.

While so many children in Worcester struggle to find opportunities, these ten inaugural Worcester Partnership students know they have been a part of something truly special. With the dedication of leaders like Charlie Aleksiewicz and Jo Truesdell, their tireless team of teachers and volunteers, and hundreds of students following in their footsteps, the “first ten” are poised to do great things and the Partnership’s impact is just beginning to be felt.

Bringing Vision 2016 into

Now more than three years into the implementation of Vision 2016, it’s exciting to see how many aspects of the School the strategic plan has influenced. It has guided us through the transition to a new Head of School, provided a framework for our talented faculty to expand beyond traditional classrooms and curricula, and set in motion an ongoing philosophical shift in the way we approach teaching and learning at Bancroft.

Even as it helps us adapt, our strategic plan supports and furthers the qualities that have always drawn families to Bancroft School — exceptional academics, superb faculty, hands-on learning experiences, exposure to different cultures, programs that develop leadership, courage, and values, and an education that meets the needs of the whole child.

As a broad range of individuals and committees from across our community weigh in on the next steps, the energy around learning is palpable. Here we present a snapshot of some of the Vision 2016 outcomes from the viewpoint of our faculty members.

INITIATIVE ONE

The Bancroft School Learning Laboratory Method

By Trevor O’Driscoll, Head of Middle School If you’ve raised or even been around a baby you probably have a good sense of how they first actively learn: with their mouths. Nothing within arm’s reach is safe from wonder, and the whole world, including the shag carpet and all its hidden treasures, is a learning laboratory. What’s that unknown round item on the floor?, one can imagine the baby thinking as she puts the cat kibble in her mouth. What’s that metal thing that gets inserted into the wall and parents really freak out about? — as the plug goes in for a gumming. What has she learned? Cat food: yuck. Plug: good entertainment watching dad yell and dance. Sticky memories made.

Although they aren’t putting anything in their mouths (generally rule number one in a science lab), students in the Research & Scientific Inquiry class learn in much the same way as the curious baby. For these juniors and seniors, the inquisitiveness that drives action is slightly more sophisticated than wondering about cat food. They pursue topics such as climate change and its effect on monarch butterfly egg viability and caterpillar growth rates (that’s the topic that earned Rachel Walker ’15 and Katherine Edwards ’15 the secondhighest score at The Massachusetts State Science & Engineering Fair last year). While teachers MaryAnn DeMaria and John Beauregard are instrumental in guiding their charges, asking questions that lead to more inquiry, and keeping everyone safe, students decide what they want to know more about. They pick things up. They manipulate objects and ideas. They learn by letting their curiosity lead them to action. They create sticky memories.

We as educators can learn a great deal from formative self-education experiences. Converting a driving and natural curiosity into hands-on engagement with subject matter is still, in many ways, the most effective way we humans learn.

With Bancroft’s Learning Laboratory Method and approach, teachers are capturing their students’ yearning for engagement to foster deep and meaningful knowledge acquisition.

The teachers themselves are role models for the students as they reach outside their norms and experiment with, reflect on, and adapt their work. The methodology, our expert teachers, and dedicated and committed students all work in concert to help make the memories sticky.

INITIATIVE TWO

The Bancroft Academic Center for Excellence

By Elisa Heinricher, US Computer Science Teacher Walk around Bancroft on any day of the week and you will see dynamic teachers and groups of students learning outside the confines of classroom walls— students using conventional and unconventional learning resources, students and faculty who are connected to thought leaders in the Worcester community and around the globe.

The idea of a Bancroft Academic Center for Excellence, or BACE, was originally conceived as a freestanding building — “a space in which students and teachers may work collaboratively on projectbased curricula.” But as we began integrating more Learning Laboratory Methods into our curriculum, it became clear that the School would need to take a look at the campus in its entirety to best support the accessibility of “learning, creating, and collaboration.”

The walls around learning are coming down at Bancroft, and all our learning spaces must be flexible enough to support many different types of learning. In just one day a space may transform from a medieval castle to a maker space, from a forum

discussing environmental issues with students halfway across the world to a performance space joining groups throughout the Worcester community.

We are already embracing the notion of collaborative learning, and are developing infrastructure upgrades throughout the campus that will support the long-term campus plan.

As we ignite student curiosity and encourage student collaboration both inside and outside Bancroft, BACE has expanded from a physical building to a broadened mindset that influences the way we consider the needs of students and teachers as they literally “think outside the box.”

INITIATIVE THREE The Hope Graham Program at Bancroft School

By Candace Anderson, Interim Director of HGP Now in its third school year, the Hope Graham Program (HGP) has a robust student enrollment and by all counts is a success. This specialized program for bright learners with dyslexia and other languagebased learning differences is changing lives. How do we know? The easy answers would be our improved test scores or the number of books read—the quantifiable factors. But the real measures are the everyday remarkable moments.

No statistic can summarize the story of a child who had removed all books from her room in frustration before joining the program. Four months after her immersion in HGP, the same student independently set up a reading corner next to her bed.

Success is the group of Middle School students who advocated for and founded a Spanish conversation club, eager to participate with their classmates in the excitement of learning a new language.

It is the seventh grader whose love of boats inspired him to get his captain’s license, which required studying a complex technical manual and passing state and federal written tests, which he did—with one of the highest scores in his group.

And perhaps most of all, it is the benefit of having these diverse learners within our community. It is the value that they bring to their peers, the new levels of expertise that are required from our faculty, and the added depth of thought that it promotes among all of us. HGP benefits everyone at Bancroft, not just the students enrolled in it. It helps us think differently, consider the perspectives of others, stretch our minds, and set new goals.

HGP students are involved in the future of their program, from offering input in the hiring of a new teacher to starting a dialogue about seventh grade advisory groups. Our first two years have seen our students make amazing strides in a short time, building the skills and confidence they need to succeed in high school and beyond.

Progress is the boy in Lower School who finished a book and for the first time, to the joy of his mother, said, “I hope there is another one.”

INITIATIVE FOUR Bancroft and the World: Global Studies for the 21st Century

By Mark Taylor, US English Teacher With credit to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, change is the only constant in life. It is our responsibility, indeed our mission, to help students develop the skills to succeed in a complex and changing global community. The first step in that process is for us, as the educators, to be open to change, flexible, and to reflect on our experiences.

It is with this in mind that we approach global studies at Bancroft, giving students the opportunity to engage with the world and enhance their awareness of both themselves and other cultures at many moments and in many forms. Global learning is a continuous thread woven throughout the Bancroft student experience from PreK through Grade 12.

Through field trips and class projects, our youngest students discover how people from other times and places lived, recreating their clothing, homes, food, and art, while making connections with their own heritage.

In Middle School, exploration and discovery continue as the classes become more specialized.

The sixth grade Blackstone Valley project reveals how our own region connects with the world.

The Phenomenon of Language and World Issues courses raise awareness. Travel opportunities offer direct exposure to other cultures.

This strong foundation allows our Upper School students to find their own ways to impact the larger world community — from globally significant service projects in Worcester, to travel and study opportunities on several different continents.

Our International Student Program, launched in 2012, welcomes up to 20 students from China, fully matriculated at Bancroft for the four years of Upper School. It is a testament to these students’ full integration into our community that one of the original international students, Iris Li, was elected student council president for 2015-2016.

INITIATIVE FIVE Advancing Goodness in Our Changing World, PreK through Grade 12

by Lyssa Steponaitis, MS Math Teacher “I have one request of all of you this year. Be kind,” said senior Iris Li, the newly elected student council president as she addressed the students and faculty at this year’s opening assembly. “When I first came to Bancroft from China three years ago, I was overwhelmed by the kindness,” she continued. “My experience here never lacked supportive words, genuine compliments, and kind encouragements. This is the reason I am proud to call this place home.”

Bancroft provides numerous ways for students to better understand, empathize with, and ease the burdens of others. Bancroft Lower Schoolers collect mittens and hats for needy children. Fifth graders buddy up with first graders to ease their first days navigating the dining hall.

Seniors complete meaningful Co-op projects at local non-profit organizations.

After the students in the Middle School Diversity Club attended an interscholastic diversity conference last fall, they wanted to share the eye-opening and heartopening experience with their peers. It was decided that creating their own conference was the way to do it. They recruited Upper School students and faculty to lead diversity workshops ranging from Making Sushi to International Dance to How to be an Ally. The Diversity Club had the experience of planning a half-day conference, while their classmates had the opportunity to learn and share about a range of cultures and ideas other than their own.

Goodness is intrinsic in children, but it must be continually nurtured, modeled, reinforced, and experienced to firmly establish it as a habit of mind as we advance through a world that is not always kind.

In Memoriam Alumni Cora Whitin Truslow ’31

August 24, 2015, Scarborough, ME, at 101

Mrs. Truslow attended Bancroft and Miss Porter’s School. She married Henry Truslow in 1937, and was predeceased by him and their daughter Nancy. She lived in New England throughout her life and, enjoyed farming, knitting, tennis and was a loyal Red Sox fan. She is survived by four children, 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Weston Public Schools where she taught for 21 years, before retiring in 1995. She was active in her community as a tutor and volunteer for civic organizations, and she enjoyed various outdoor activities with her family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, daughter, and sister Joan Franklin Presner ’52. She leaves her five children, 12 grandchildren, sister Janet Franklin Amidon ’52 and extended family.

Mrs. Haskin attended Bancroft and graduated from Smith College. She was a lifelong activist and spokesperson on water resource issues in New Jersey, and served as a commissioner of the NJ Water Supply Authority. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold, and her son Jim. She is survived by four daughters, and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Gilman attended Bancroft, Miss Hall’s School and Smith College. She was an officer in the WAVES from 1943 to 1946, serving in DC and Newport, RI. She married Robbins Gilman who worked in the Foreign Service, leading them to live around the world. After retirement they settled in NH where Dossie, as she was known, enjoyed volunteering on many committees. She was pre-deceased by her husband, her sister, Elizabeth Dewey Marangoni ’31, and her brother, Francis H. Dewey ’42. She leaves four children, one granddaughter, and her brother Henry B. Dewey ’42 and his family.

Mrs. Goodale graduated from Bancroft and Bradford Jr. College. She was an avid sailor, most recently on her 35’ sailboat, Wings, which she enjoyed with her husband Ray, and their daughters. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with family in Vero Beach, FL and Mashpee, MA in the summer. She was predeceased by her sister Elaine Hamilton Norman ’62. She leaves her husband of 60 years, and two daughters, four grandsons, and two great-grandchildren and extended family.

Mr. Taber graduated from Bancroft and Skidmore College, where he majored in business. He lived for the last 14 years with his partner, Karen Sullivan, in Glendale, Arizona. Benji was predeceased by his father, and is survived by his mother, Mary, two sisters, and many extended family members.

Mrs. Simmerer graduated from Bancroft and the University of New Hampshire. She established the first kindergarten in Hubbardston where she was a teacher. She also worked for many years in the banking industry. Martha was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, David, four children, six grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren, and many extended family members.

Mr. Lufkin graduated from Bancroft and attended the University of Hartford. Having an aptitude for computers, he became proficient in computer systems and coding. He worked as a system supporter for several area companies, including TJX Companies in Marlborough, MA. He enjoyed traveling and cooking, and was an avid reader. He is survived by his grandmother, parents, and many extended family members.

Mrs. Richards graduated from Bancroft and the Nursery Training School of Boston. During her lifetime she was active in numerous volunteer activities, including the Girl Scouts of America for over 20 years and, more recently as a Board Member of the Camp Sargent Road Co-operative in Merrimack, NH, the manufactured housing park in which she lived. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, and leaves her three children, seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Cynthia Carey Taylor ’45 and extended family.

Mrs. Coburn graduated from Bancroft and Wellesley College, where she majored in Art History. She received an M. Ed. From Boston University. After raising her family, she became an elementary school teacher in the

Mr. Coes attended Bancroft through eighth grade, and then graduated from Hebron Academy. He received a BA from Williams College and completed his Master’s in mathematics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he also received an honorary doctorate in 1991.

Terry, as he was known, taught mathematics at Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich, RI for 41 years, and was Chair of the department for many years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Loring Coes, Jr. ’32, and his sister, Priscilla Coes Bean ‘65. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dana Cross Coes ’68, two daughters, a grandson, and sister Martha Coes Thayer ’58.

Mrs. Hastings was a dedicated volunteer and served on many boards, including Bancroft’s Board of Trustees from 1961 to 1963. She was predeceased by her husband, Rev. Bradford Hastings, and their daughter Judith Hastings Otis ’62. She is survived by her children, Daphne Hastings Wilcox ’61, William A. Hastings ’65 and Bradford Hastings ’68 and their families.

Mrs. Wandrei taught middle school English and history at Bancroft School from 1968 to 1988. A graduate of University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Assumption College, she was a lifelong learner and enjoyed traveling to Italy throughout her life. She was predeceased by her son James ’80 and is survived by her husband of 66 years, Alfred, daughter Joan Wandrei Gong ’69, two grandchildren and extended family.

Angela Cheng-Cimini is a Senior Human Resources consultant with over 20 years of experience. She is currently the Bancroft PFA president and has been active on the PFA for several years. A dedicated volunteer in the local community, Angela served as Chair of the $35M building committee for a local public school. She earned her B.S. in Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. She and her husband Mike are the parents of Matthew ’15 and Christina ’17.

Karyn Wagner is the Marketing/ PR Director at Wagner Auto Group.

She has actively been involved in the Bancroft PFA for more than 10 years, as well as the EcoTarium, Mohegan Council Boy Scouts of America, Dress for Success, and UMass Hospital. She holds a B.S. in Finance from Bentley University. Karyn and her husband Mark ’84 are the parents of Casey ’13 and Benjamin ’16.

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Bancroft, It is with tremendous pride that we bring you the 2014-2015 Annual Report, celebrating the many remarkable moments that occurred at Bancroft School. It was a year of transition, in which we welcomed a new Head of School and a number of new administrative leaders.

One might have expected hesitation on the part of our supporters, but nothing could be further from the truth. The numbers served to validate a feeling of collective optimism for the School. Our loyal donors were unwavering in their generosity, and we saw steady growth in the number of new donors making philanthropic gifts to Bancroft. All together, your financial contributions to Bancroft during the 2014-2015 school year totaled more than $709,000 – with $408,000 of that going to the Bancroft Fund.

We saw 100% participation in the Bancroft Fund from our Trustees and 88% participation among faculty and staff – a strong sign of their confidence in the vision and leadership of the School. We enlisted an amazing crew of volunteers to tell the story of the Bancroft Fund to their peers, resulting in an incredible 110% increase in parent participation. I am deeply grateful to Advancement Chair David Fahlstrom and our tireless volunteers who helped grow the culture of philanthropy across our campus. I am equally humbled and inspired by the number of Bancroft families who supported us with a gift. You truly made a difference.

Alumni, too, continue to be involved in so many facets of the School. Throughout the past year, at gatherings across the country, networking breakfasts at Bancroft, and our lively Reunion Weekend, the pride of being a Bancroft alum shone through. I was delighted to hear, time and again, how well prepared our graduates felt – both academically and emotionally – for college and life after Bancroft. It is a testament to this institution’s strength that we enjoy long-standing relationships with generations of graduates, former students, retired faculty, and others. Their commitment to stay involved illustrates the pride of belonging to the Bancroft family.

Spotlight on Giving

Pat Condon has been a familiar face on our Shore Drive campus for almost 50 years. Many know her as their fifth-grade teacher — a position she held for 32 years. Others know Pat as the mother of Jim ’83 and Becca ’86, or more recently, as the grandmother of Chris ’19 and Ben ’24.

Throughout these years, Pat has been an ardent ambassador of the School.

Since retiring from Bancroft in 2000, Pat has volunteered numerous hours to the School, most significantly as the Grandparent Chair of the Bancroft Fund. Together with her husband Gerry, Pat has contributed to the School every year for nearly five decades, and has consistently engaged and inspired others in their philanthropic giving to the School.

What is it that makes Pat such a passionate supporter of Bancroft?

It’s a number of things, but first and foremost, the wonderful opportunities the School afforded our children, and the support they had. What they gave our kids was above and beyond what we would have found anywhere else.

I am more than happy to make my annual gift to the Bancroft Fund, knowing it helps guarantee my grandchildren receive the best education from Bancroft School, as did their father and aunt.

All grandparents want the best for their grandchildren. I like to remind people that many hands make light work. If we all pitch in and give what we can, we can make a real difference.
