The 1983 varsity soccer team had the best record (11-2-1) since 1976, the year of the last Eastern League championship for Bancroft. However, the 1976 record of 6-0-2 in the league was topped by this year’s record of 8Tl. As well as achieving the League championship, the soccer team also qualified for the Division II playoffs, seeded fourth. Although Bancroft played a tough game on a rainy, fog­ gy day, Auburn, seeded fifth , was the victor, 0-1. The lone goal was scored only minutes before the end of the game. Though this loss removed Ban­ croft from the playoffs, the team was content with the fact that they had played one of their best games of the season.

The 1983 varsity field hockey team qualified for the District playoffs for the first time in four years, with a record of 10-1-4. Even with a strong defense, the field hockey team lost to Quaboag in the quarter-finals, 0-2. In her last year at Bancroft, captain sen­ ior Sara MacCarthy led the team through a very successful season.

The team has high hopes for a great season next year since only three sen­ iors are leaving the team.
