Bana Balang Project is supported by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund The NLDTF relies on funds generated by the National Lottery. The Lotteries Act identifies the manner in which NLDTF funding may be allocated. The Minister of Trade & Industry, on the recommendation of the industry experts in the relevant Distributing Agency, makes the policy that guides the allocation of funds to beneficiaries. It is the aim of the NLDTF that the grants made will make a difference to the lives of all South Africans, especially those more vulnerable. The NLDTF is dedicated to improving sustainability of the beneficiary organisations it funds. The NLDTF currently has in the region of R2 billion a year to distribute to registered non-profit organisations in the fields of charities; arts, culture and national heritage; and sport and recreation that meet the qualifying criteria. The NLDTF places emphasis on areas of greatest need and greatest potential, so that all South Africans can gain from, and contribute to, South Africa’s development.

HIV & AIDS has huge impact on young people South Africa’s HIV and AIDS epidemic has had a devastating effect on children in a number of ways. There were an estimated 330,000 under-15’s living with HIV in 2009, a figure that has almost doubled since 2001. HIV in South Africa is transmitted predominantly through heterosexual sex, with mother-to-child transmission being the other main infection route. The national transmission rate of HIV from mother to child is approximately 11%.

Because the virus is transmitted from the child’s mother in cases of mother-to-child transmission, the HIV-infected child is born into a family where the virus may have already had a severe impact on health, income, productivity and the ability to care for each other. The age bracket that AIDS most heavily targets is younger adults. This is why it is so important that youngsters are informed, aware and careful.

Facts that make you wonder: Every day nearly 5000 people in South Africa become infected with HIV. 86.4% of people aged 15-24 say that they are single, but 3 in 10 people aged 15, 1 in 5 people aged 16, 2 in 5 people aged 17 and more than half aged 18 have had sex.

Young people aged 15-24 make up nearly half of all new HIV infections worldwide.

If you or your partner has somebody on the side it greatly increases your risk of getting HIV & STI’s, but most people don’t think about it like that.

Approximately 72% of young people aged between 15-24 said they used condoms the last time they had sex.

Having sex with an older partner can increase your risk of getting HIV or another STI because older partners are more likely to be infected. Older partners often have the power, so asking them to use a condom can be difficult.

Approximately 87% of young people aged between 15-24 know that using condoms reduces their chances of contracting HIV and other STI’s.

Did you know that your life is NOT over after you find out that you are HIV positive? • Visit your health practitioner regularly • Look after yourself properly • Take the tablets when and how the doctor has prescribed them

What are you going to do about the impact that your actions & choices have on your future as well as on the future of those around you?

If caught early, cancer can bbe ttreated t d and beaten. It’s a tough subject to breach – people often whisper “The Big C” and this creates fear and loathing around the topic. The Vrede Foundation aims to raise cancer awareness amongst the South African youth through music. Music is the cornerstone of The Vrede Foundation’s process and the live music arena in South Africa is providing the stage from which this new message of hope and action can be delivered. At these live music events young South Africans can get information, learn how to be prepared, where to seek counseling, contribute funds to the Foundation’s trust to help their peers and simultaneously HAVE A REALLY GOOD TIME! Bana Balang spoke to two very talented musicians that are well known in the South African music scene. These muso’s, Emile Swiegers from Die Tuindwergies and Bouwer Bosch from Straatligkinders & Dans Dans Lisa, are passionate about what they do. Here is what they had to say: Emile Swiegers guitarist of Die Tuindwergies • What does Vredefest mean to you? Good vibes, good people and of course a good cause. • What is the goal of Vredefest? To raise money and to help the unfortunate people with their fight against cancer. • What impact did Vredefest have on

There’s a great team of people working together, to help you - Vredefest Bouwer Bosch vocals & guitar in Dans Dans Lisa & Straatligkinders • What does Vredefest mean to you? Vredefest for me means people coming together for one cause and raising funds for young people with cancer without medical funds, as well as young people celebrating life! • What is the goal of Vredefest? Vredefest’s goal is to create awareness about cancer in the popculture • Do you think that Vredefest has made a difference in South Africa? Yes definitely. INFLUENCES ON PERSONAL LIFESTYLE

Grade 7

DO YOU FOLLOW THE CROWD?

Our friends can have a powerful influence on us. Everybody likes to fit in with the crowd. But sometimes the influence can have negative effects on our lives. We need to be able to evaluate influences on our lives and make the right choices. Read what Grade 7 learners wrote.

Dear Mary I am a 13 year old and all my friends have had sex. I’m the only one that has not. Should I have sex for this reason?

Dear Mary

Yours sincerely Confused

At least half of my class at school either smoke or take drugs. Most of them have tried it. I have not and I’m feeling left out and a bit of a nerd. What should I do?

Dear Confused

14-year old boy

I am sure that many of your friends have NOT had sexual intercourse yet. Even if they have this is not a reason for you to have sex. It is a good idea to wait until you are older before you have sex. One needs to be emotionally grown-up enough to cope with a sexual relationship. Only have sex when you are in a loving relationship with someone you can really trust and know. Apart form the risk of pregnancy, you must also think about HIV and AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases

Dear 14-year old boy You are not a nerd. In fact, exactly the opposite. You clearly have a mind of your own. What you should do is find out as much as you can about smoking cigarettes and taking drugs. Both of them can be very dangerous. Good luck and carry on making up your own mind.

Group ACTIVITY Dealing with pressure from friends Hayley’s friends are all going to a party at the local community hall on Saturday. She tells her parents she wants to go too. Her parents say “no” because they have heard that there are a lot of drugs at the party and also because Hayley is under-age. 1. 2. 3.

Who is influencing Hayley to go to the party? Is this a positive or negative influence? Say why. How do you think Hayley should deal with this? Should she: a) go to the party secretly and tell her parents she is going to stay at a friend’s house? b) tell her parents that she is old enough to make her own decisions and if she doesn’t go she will have no friends? c) tell her friends that there are drugs at the party and she doesn’t want to go as she could get into trouble with the police? d) find someone else in the class who is also not going to the party and plan to get together with them on Saturday?

Teachers Science Project

Making rock candy is a lesson in science in and of itself, and you can eat the results! You can make the crystals different colors, if you wish, simply by adding a bit of food coloring.

Rock Candy Recipe Teach your kids how crystals grow with this edible rock candy recipe. Let each child have their own jar and their own color.

Ingredients: • 2 cups sugar • 1/2 cup water • Food colouring (optional) • Clean glass jar • String (cut into 15 cm lengths) • Pencil

Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 5 minutes Total Time: 10 minutes

Preparation: In a medium pot, heat 1 cup of the sugar and the water. Do not boil! Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Gradually add a few drops of the food coloring of your choice and the rest of the sugar, stirring continuously until all the sugar is dissolved. Pour the solution into a clean glass jar and tie the pieces of string to the pencil and suspend them across the mouth of the jar so that the ends hang into the sugar water. Crystals suitable to eat will form in an hour and continue for several days to a week. Pieces can be broken off and eaten after the first hour. (But, try to hold out for big crystals!) Although you may see quick results in small measure, the larger rock candy crystals you’re accustomed to seeing in the sweets shop will take some time to form.

To have a dream (no not the one you had while your were sleeping), the dream you have for yourself when your older, when you are finished with school, your future. Sometimes we believe that it’s out of your reach, the good looking girl / boy, the perfect job, the nice car, we can go on with the list till the end of time, BUT everyone’s dream is unique because our needs are different. But why don’t we. LAZINESS is the main culprit. Yes we sit around waiting for the WHAT IF, to come to us. Take the first step, start believing that your dreams are to be achieved, and act on it! No matter where you’re from, what you wear or the kind of people you deal with – If you can dream it, you CAN achieve it. Don’t back down from a challenge. The future is full of challenges and it is in your power to overcome any of these, you just need to have the passion and the drive. DON’T be afraid to take that first step. Remember the highest mountains can be climbed, a problem can be solved and a dream can come true. It is up to you to take the first step and remember never be afraid to ask for help and guidance.

Keep on dreaming

BINGE DRINKING Binge drinking is drinking heavily on a single occasion, or drinking continuously over a number of days or weeks. It is also known as ‘getting smashed’, or ‘drinking to get drunk’. Alternatively, someone may not necessarily set out to drink a lot, but may be unsure of their limits, resulting in drinking too much over a short period of time. Usually this happens when there is pressure from friends and you – not wanting to be the odd one out, start drinking to show them that you can handle alcohol.

PLEASE NOTE: BINGE DRINKING IS HARMFUL If you drink to excess you’re likely to experience a number of physical effects, including: • • • • • •

hangovers nausea shakiness vomiting and memory loss injury to yourself and others Alcohol poisoning.

Alcohol is a major cause of injury and death among young people. When you’re drunk, you’re more likely to put yourself in risky situations, like getting into a car with someone who’s been drinking, or being the perpetrator or victim of violence. If you have not drunken alcohol before, it may be difficult for you to know what your limits are. The first time you drink alcohol, it may be a good idea to try drinking in a safe area, where someone can help you if you drink too much. This might be at home, or at a friends place.

BUT REMEMBER DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE AND DO NOT GET INTO A CAR IF THE DRIVER IS INTOXICATED.

Bana Balang

Love is both an action and a feeling. The action of love generates a blissful feeling called by the same name. When the action stops, the blissful feeling is replaced with pain. There is a similar feeling called lust which may be confused with love. You need to decipher between the two in order to have a healthy heart. Every person is capable of great love (and its opposite, fear, which generates all painful emotions such as hate, greed and jealousy). While there are many different ways to define love and there are many different ways to love someone (or even yourself), here is a general guide to loving.

Say it! When you say the words “I Love You”, they should carry with them the desire to show someone that you love them, not what you simply want to feel. When you say it, make sure you really mean it and are willing to do anything for that special person.

Empathise! Put yourself in someone else’s shoes. Rather than impose your own expectations or attempt to control them, to understand how they feel, where they come from, and who they are. Realise how they could also love you back just as well.

Love unconditionally! If you cannot love another person without attaching stipulations, then it is not love at all, but deep-seated opportunism (one who makes the most of an advantage, often unmindful of others). If your interest is not in the other person as such, but rather in how that person can enhance your experience of life, then it is not unconditional. If you have no intention of improving that person’s life, or allowing that person to be themselves and accepting them as they are, and not who you want them to be, then you are not striving to love them unconditionally

Expect nothing in return! That doesn’t mean you should allow someone to mistreat or undervalue you. It means that giving love does not guarantee receiving love. Try loving just for the sake of love. Realise that someone may have a different way of showing his or her love for you; do not expect to be loved back in exactly the same way.

Realise it can be lost! If you realise that you can lose the one you love, then you have a greater appreciation of what you have. Think how lucky you are to have someone to love. Don’t make an idol of the person you love. This will place them under undue pressure and will likely result in you losing them.

Dear Dr Eve I sometimes get drunk at a party and then I am not sure what is happening to me. I am worried that I may be in trouble. Aminah Dear Aminah The secret is to make sure that you are in control of what you are doing. Don’t drink if you are under 18. If you do drink, make sure that you don’t take open beverages from others. Do not drink until you are drunk either. If you suspect you are in trouble, speak to your health practitioner as soon as possible. Rather be safe than sorry. Dr Eve Dear Dr Eve I am very unhappy with my situation because I know that my girlfriend has cheated on me. Kabelo

Next time you face this ridicule, either good natured or malicious; offer the following information to those who taunt you. When you think of recycling, do you think making money? Most people think about recycling in terms of reducing trash or helping the environment. While these things are true, it is also true that you can make money by recycling. Save your cans and bottles. Companies charge a deposit when you purchase a can or bottle. Most people don’t think of it this way, but this really is part of the purchase price. Many people don’t turn in their cans and bottles, but the money can really add up. Five cents a can or bottle can turn into big bucks quickly. This doesn’t just have to be your cans or bottles. Many people throw them out with the regular trash, or just put them in their recycling bins, or just throw them out of the window. Take a walk through your neighbourhood and you could easily gather bags of cans and bottles that you can turn into cold hard cash. So next time you are laughed at for picking up trash show them your cash and smile.
