GREY AND RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGES

ANDREW FALCONER

This month we feature two farmland (once in my garden!) birds, of which the Grey Partridge is native to the UK but the Red-legged The Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris was introduced from France in the rufa) is slightly larger than the Grey, at 32-35 cm in length. Sexes are alike. The distinctive head pattern shows a white throat bordered by a black stripe through the eye which extends into a black neck and black streaking onto a pale grey breast. The back is brown and the beak and legs are pinkish-red.

18th century. The Grey Partridge (Perdix perdix) is 28-32 cm in length. slightly smaller than a Blue Tit. Adults of both sexes are alike. It has a small, round head with an orange-brown face and throat, vermiculated ash-grey breast with chestnut brown bars on each flank, grey-brown back and wings and a reddish tail. The male has a dark brown belly patch, which is paler on the otherwise similar female.

Their habitat and behaviour is similar to the Grey Partridge, but they are more likely to run away quickly, rather than fly, when disturbed. They are uncommon near Balmullo but can be found in areas to the north and west, towards Newburgh and the Tay coast.

They breed and feed in farmland with hedges or other shelter and are usually seen in small flocks (“coveys) which are nervous and easily flushed into flight. They have declined greatly in recent years, mainly due to loss of habitat, but can be found along field edges near Cuplahills or the Quarry Photos courtesy of John Anderson, Crail

ANNOUNCEMENTS

BALMULLO COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Recycling Centres – from Monday 2nd April, Fife Council Recycling Centres will have opening times reduced. The overall opening times will be 09.00 – 17.00 from October – March and 0.900 – 17.45 from April to September, but for 5 days only. Cupar – closed Mondays & Thursdays, and for a lunch break 12.00 – 12.45. St. Andrews – closed Tuesdays & Fridays, and for a lunch break of 12.45 – 13.30. The large centre outside Ladybank will still be open all week, with no lunch break. Dog Fouling - We appreciate that the majority of dog owners in Balmullo act responsibly and “pick up” after their dog, but the perennial problem of dog fouling still goes on. We received the following letter from a concerned resident - “Today, Thursday 1st February, at 9.20 am, I arrived at the Bus Stop on the corner of Dunedin Park / School Road to find 3 large “parcels” of dog poo, right in front of the Bus Stop. It looked as if at least one person (probably a child walking to school) had stepped in it. What a mess the pavement was in!

I asked the Builders on the corner site if I could borrow a shovel from them, but instead of handing it to me a very kind builder cleared up the mess. Whoever was responsible for allowing their pet to foul the pavement should hang their head in shame!” Please pick up after your dog. We are receiving an increasing number of complaints from the public about dog-fouling. No-one should need reminding about the unpleasantness of dog-mess or its health hazards, especially to young children. Burnside Hall grounds, School Road, Lucklaw Road and Main Road are serious areas of concern. In the Park, dog-mess has been reported on the football pitch and in the children’s play area – even in the MUGA. The Community Council is considering asking the Parks Committee to close the park to dog-owners unless the problem is resolved. Please co-operate with us in keeping the village clean The next meeting is in Burnside Hall at 7.30pm on Monday 9th April. A copy of the Minutes will be available on the shelves at the Post Office.

The clothes will then be available to try on in the changing rooms provided and buy in our Pop Up Shop.

This is an opportunity to enjoy an evening with your friends, have fun trying on clothes you have seen modelled and know that you are helping to raise money for the further regeneration of St Athernase. Tickets cost £7.50 each. There will be two charity raffles, one drawn in the afternoon and the other in the evening. Remember that plenty of parking is available at the Burnside Hall. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Alison Jeffrey 01334 870 674.

LEUCHARS ST ATHERNASE REGENERATION UPDATE After over four years of planning, the first phase of the regeneration project of Leuchars St Athernase is now complete. We are very grateful to the Historic Lottery Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and many other grant funding bodies for their assistance in funding our project. The exterior of the church has been restored to its former glory, with new roofs, refurbished windows, rainwater goods, replacement stone skews and pointing of the existing stone. The refurbishment of the 1745 bell tower is now complete, with a new weather vane commissioned to replicate the original. Our cockerel on top of the weather vane has even had a face lift! The church bell (dated 1740) will now be rung using an automated system, but the bell wheel and various other objects of historical interest are to be kept and

will form part of a small exhibition detailing the various stages of the restoration. The church, having been closed during the construction period, is now open again and we look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful medieval building. PEDAL POWER

CHRISTINA JACK

Over a hundred years ago, imagine three boys speeding down a hill on their bikes. The hill is steep and they need to slow down! One boy drags his feet on the ground as his bike has no brakes. A second boy applies a "spoon" brake, a metal plate that rubs against the rear tyre to slow him down. Only the third boy is confident he'll be able to stop. Why? Because he's got the latest in bicycle technology: a coaster brake! All he has to do is backpedal a bit, and metal plates inside the crank hub rub together and safely slow him down. Disc brakes are in common use today and offer consistent braking power in all weather conditions, with no rim wear and longer lasting brake pads. Frames back then were made out of cast iron or wood. In this modern day bicycle features are made out of more exotic material like titanium, aluminium or steel. Car drivers assume the roads were built for them and bikes are seen as an intrusion to them, but it was cyclists who first started the push to build and pave flat roads more than 100 years ago. To many motorists it's back in the 19th century that bicycles belong. The hard, flat road surfaces we take for granted are relatively new. Asphalt surfaces weren't widespread until the 1930s. It's an interesting fact that cyclists paved the way for motorists. Before I retired, I remember when a work colleague gave me a lift home one dark dull winter’s night during the rush hour. To my horror, on getting out of the passenger seat, I nailed a cyclist with the door, who unknown to us, had undertaken on the inside while the car was stationary. It was difficult to see this cyclist filtering through the traffic as his bicycle had no lights and the cyclist wore no hi-viz clothing. Relieved that he was unhurt but the look of anger on his face said it all of who he thought was to blame for the

accident. I asked myself, why couldn't this cyclist have followed the same road rules as cars. Perhaps cyclists reading this would say rules aren't made for us! We all know that cyclists are playing their role of reducing traffic and pollution but there will always be the scenario of drivers vs cyclists. However, in my opinion, I think that cyclists undertaking traffic on the inside is dangerous unless it’s an official cycle path and they should always overtake traffic on the outside. As concerns for the health of the general population grow, cycling is a good source of exercise especially for the lungs, heart and bone joints but they should be aware of their surroundings and a little bit of tolerance goes a long way! Other thoughts ...... Should cycling be taken more seriously in that cyclists have cycle training to use the road safely to avoid unnecessary accidents?

Should there be more dedicated cycle paths shared with walkers and runners, safely protected from motor traffic? Would that increase more problems that walkers would feel more intimidated by fast cyclists? Remember some people are hard of hearing or have impaired vision. There again, cycling infrastructure would mean more public investment. A few decades ago, in the 50's, the feeling of freedom you had as a child on your bike when we went to places around our neighbourhood without our parents' supervision. Streets back then weren't dominated by cars and were safer for kids. Are the children of today missing out? What's your opinion? On your bike!

BALMULLO SWI President Ann Falconer welcomed members, and guest speaker, Hilary Green, to our meeting on Thursday, 1st February, 2018. Hilary is a Retained Firefighter with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, based at Cupar. She has over 18 years service as a Firefighter, and has been driving the Fire Appliances for about 15 years. Hilary gave a most informative and sometimes humorous talk about the job of a Firefighter, from training right through to attending fires, as well as other duties they carried out, assisting partner agencies, Police, Ambulance etc. She also provided very valuable information regarding fire safety, and supplied handy leaflets to the members. Members were reminded that the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service offer a Free Home Fire Safety Visit, which would also include fitting Free Smoke Alarms , where necessary. To book a visit, call 0800 0731999 or visit www.firescotland.gov.uk There followed a delicious light supper, provided by tea hostess Mary Reilly, together with several helpers. BALMULLO GALA NEWS

Being part of the local community is important to The Balmullo Gala and we have recently gifted some sports equipment to Balmullo Primary School - see photo. We hope all the children enjoy and benefit from all that they received in the coming months. We have a few exciting events coming up over the next few months. Firstly a brand new event being hosted by the Gala and St Andrews Wine Company is taking place on the 24th of March in Balmullo Inn – a Gin Tasting with 4 gins from across the UK. This has proved very popular with all tickets selling out quickly and we hope it’s a great success. Thanks to Ashley for allowing it in the pub. The next event is the return of Balmullo’s Got Talent and we hope last year’s winners Niamh, Maggie and Rowan will be taking part to defend their titles! The first heat takes place on Sunday the 25th of March between 4 and 6pm in the Balmullo Inn, the second heat takes place same time and place on the 29th of April and the final heat will be on the 27th of May. The grand final will be on Gala Day after the Hill

Race. There are 2 categories – age 13 and under and age 14 and over and it costs £1 to enter. The top prize is £50 and all entrants will be entered into a draw to win a £20 Amazon voucher. So, if you can sing, dance, do magic, do martial arts, play an instrument, recite poetry, dance or indeed have any other talent you would like to show us, make sure you enter! See our Facebook page for more information – The Balmullo Gala. Thanks to Emma Stothers for organising this event. The Balmullo 5’s football run by Steve Thaw and sponsored by Monteaths and A&R Finnie will return on the weekend of the 26th and 27th May in Balmullo Park. The tournament for kids will be Saturday the 26th – be there 11.30 for a 12 midday start. All kids teams must pre-register with Steve Thaw – see The Balmullo Gala Facebook page or the Balmullo 5’s Football Facebook page for more details. Or, email s.thaw75@gmail.com. For the adults tournament, be there at 12 midday for a 12.30 start – no need to pre -register. The Balmullo Gala will this year land on the 3rd Saturday in June instead of the 2nd Saturday so it will be on the 16th and we have lots lined up. The Hill Race will have a new route this year and the successful Dog Show will return too – see the next newsletter for more details. Our thanks to everyone in the village and the surrounding areas for continuing to support the Balmullo Gala – we couldn’t do it without you all! We are always looking for helpers and Committee members so if you would like to help at an event, at the Gala itself or join the committee, please send us a message on our Facebook page or email balmullogala@hotmail.co.uk. If you would like a stall at the Gala on the 16th of June or would like to donate a raffle prize, please send us a message or email too.

BALMULLO SWI TEA FOR 2 COFFEE AFTERNOON The Balmullo Nursery children, Mrs Duncan and Mrs Dunnett, would like to thank the ladies of Balmullo SWI for making them feel so welcome at their Tea for 2 fundraiser for Downs Syndrome on 14th March. The children loved the experience and very much enjoyed their juice and biscuit at a table with a table cloth on it. They have now requested that we have a table cloth on the snack table…with flowers. The children were keen to share what they had been learning when their parents came at pick up time. We were very proud of all the children.

HOGMANAY MOTHS

The blind had not been lowered in the study as darkness fell on the last evening of the year. Looking up from my desk, I noticed two small moths that had settled on the window, no doubt attracted to the light, as moths so often are. With their wings flat to the glass, they looked like miniature delta-winged aircraft only 2 centimetres across. On their undersides, exposed to me as they rested on the glass, they were dull brown and without any striking marks. Unfortunately, that is a description that applies to several species of moths that are active in mid-winter. I needed to see the upper surfaces of the wings to make an identification. Armed with a couple of glass specimen tubes, I went out into the cold night air. It was the work of

JEREMY GREENWOOD moments to catch them and triumphantly carry them inside for a close examination in the light. At first I was frustrated, for as soon as they were in the tubes they no longer held their wings out flat but folded them together above their bodies, with their upper surfaces pressed together, quite hidden from view. Grrr! Then one opened its wings, affording a good view, sufficient for me to be fairly sure which of the species of small brown moths that fly in the winter they were – the one that is actually called the Winter Moth. Not wanting to interrupt their lives any longer, I let them fly free into the chilly darkness. They had serious business to do: fly about the gardens until they found females to mate with. In this species the flying is all done by the males because the females have only rudimentary wings and simply sit on tree trunks waiting for the males to find them. Once mated, females climb further up the trees and lay their eggs in crevices in the bark close to leaf-buds. The eggs hatch just as the buds burst in spring and the caterpillars feed on young leaves before eventually dropping to the ground and pupating in the soil. By autumn, transformation in the pupa from caterpillar to moth has been completed. Like their mothers before them, the females crawl across the ground until they find a suitable tree trunk up which to climb, while the males start their nightly flights in search of suitable mates – unless distracted by lighted windows.
