TWINKLING LIGHTS AND TROLLEY DELIGHTS

By Morgan Cole
Kicking off November 21 and running through Christmas Eve, Pensacola’s beloved Winterfest event series will return, transforming downtown Pensacola into a winter wonderland featuring festive trolley tours, holiday performances, thousands of dazzling lights and more.
Established in the 90s as a neighborhood gathering and trolley ride, Winterfest has grown to become a month-long annual tradition best known for its trolley performance tours, where guests hop aboard decorated trolleys and experience a series of interactive performances along a two-mile route with a cast of Christmas characters.
This cherished annual celebration brings family-friendly fun and holiday cheer to downtown Pensacola with live performances, an Elf Parade, interactive trolley tours, Santa and his reindeer and a myriad cast of characters.
“We look forward to bringing holiday magic to the Gulf Coast every year and this will be our biggest, most spectacular Winterfest ever,” Winterfest Founder Denise Daughtry said.
Santa and his friends will visit Winterfest on select nights beginning November 21 to welcome the arrival of the Winterfest Express Electric Train to downtown Pensacola. This kid-sized train seats 24, and will run downtown each night of Winterfest throughout the Christmas season. Tickets are $5 per-person, and can be purchased online through the Winterfest website.
“This year we’re adding two new trolley tours, starting with the Peanuts Tour, where kids (and kids at heart) can team up with Charlie Brown and friends on a quest to discover the true meaning of the
season and search for the perfect tree,” Winterfest Performance Tours Coordinator River Dakota said. “Couples are also in for a treat this year aboard the Mistletoe Magic Tour—a romantic, musical journey filled with laughter, champagne and timeless holiday hits from legends like Elvis and Eartha Kitt.”
Winterfest offers opportunities to have your photo taken with Santa and the Grinch, ride on the Polar Express and many more holiday themed festivities. Seasonal extras include nightly street theater on the historic courthouse steps and a lifesized gingerbread house rest stop, complete with hot cocoa and freshbaked gingerbread cookies.
This year’s festivities will once again include the popular Elf Parade on November 28 at 2 pm, providing an opportunity for the entire family to join in the fun as hundreds of revelers riding strollers, skateboards and wagons to follow Santa on a merry path through downtown Pensacola.
During the parade lineup, Santa himself will host a jolly costume contest—awarding prizes for Biggest elf ears, best costume, bestdecorated stroller, best-decorated wagon, ugliest sweaters and most festive skateboarder. Santa will announce the costume contest winners from each category just before the parade rolls out, and each winner will lead their section of the parade.
Also new this year—to celebrate the return of Snoopy and the Peanuts gang—is a special contest and Elf Parade group for the best dressed and decorated dog in a stroller. The winner will march at the head of the section with Snoopy.
“What started as a small community tradition has grown into a beloved celebration that draws families from across the region to
downtown Pensacola. This year’s event will be our biggest and most spectacular Winterfest ever—filled with new experiences, dazzling lights and the joyful spirit that makes downtown Pensacola shine during the holidays,” Daughtry said.
This year’s Winterfest is set to be bigger, brighter and more magical than ever, offering a full season of magic, memories and holiday joy for all ages.
Winterfest tours and photos with Santa take place in Plaza Wonderland at the corner of Government Street and Palafox Place. Snow and music starts at 5:30 pm on Fridays and 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday on all tour nights.
Tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased online at pensacolawinterfest.org. Prices for performance tours and photo sessions vary by date, so be sure to check out the calendar for details.
From twinkling lights to trolley delights, here’s a highlight of this year’s new and returning performance tours.

JUNIOR LEAGUE OF PENSACOLA TO HOST DIAPER DRIVE-UP DISTRIBUTION EVENT
The Junior League of Pensacola is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our 4th year for the Diaper drive-up distribution event this year on Sunday, December 7, 2025 outside the Junior League of Pensacola office, 2016 W Garden Street, Pensacola, FL 32502. This event will take place from 1 to 3 pm, while supplies last. Currently, 1 in 2 U.S. families with young children struggle with diaper needs. Diaper need is the lack of a sufficient amount of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry, and healthy. The Junior League of Pensacola recognizes the significant need for this service, and is committed to helping local families meet their children’s essential needs. Last year, we provided over 14,200 diapers and 15,450 wipes, supporting 276 children and 152 fami-
lies in our community at this event—and we’re excited to do it again this year! We’re dedicated to ensuring that even more families have access to this essential resource.
The diaper drive-up distribution event will provide parents or caregivers 50 diapers and a package of wipes per child, while supplies last. Families will have the option to select the size of diapers, size newborn to size 7, and child does not need to be present. Participants are asked to remain in their vehicles when they arrive to ensure the safety of everyone and walk-up participants will not be accommodated. We are unable to accommodate special requests in diaper brands. Pullups, training underwear, or adult size diapers will not be available at this event.

IHMC NAMED OUTSTANDING RESEARCH ORGANIZATION FOR WORK ON NADIA HUMANOID ROBOTICS PLATFORM
The Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) is once again in the international spotlight in the field of humanoid robotics.
The Institute was named Outstanding Research Organization in the 2025 Humanoid Robotics Industry Awards for its Nadia humanoid project. The awards are sponsored by Humanoid Robotics Technology (HRT) in partnership with Novanta.
Dr. Morley Stone, IHMC’s Chief Executive Officer, was thrilled that the team was recognized in this way — among competition such as the University of California at San Diego, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California at Berkley, Standford University, Shanghai Tech University, the Instituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Harbin Institute of Technology, Peking University, and ETH Zurich.
“IHMC is indeed a special place, where researchers work together across numerous disciplines every day to push the envelope in terms of what is possible in humanoid robotics and teaming,” Stone says. “To have the worldwide humanoid community recognize us and our work is an honor.”
Humanoid Robotics Technology is a website dedicated to industry news in humanoid robotics. The Outstanding Research Organization Award honors organizations that deliver research that significantly advances the field, includes community engagement and outreach to raise awareness of the benefits of humanoids in society, and pioneer new humanoid platforms, says Jack Hallewell, co-founder of HRT.
Nadia’s large range of motion and high power-to-weight ratio is one of the design elements that makes the humanoid unique in the field. The robot’s namesake is famed gymnast Nadia Comăneci, as a nod to the ultimate design goal — achieving humanrange-of-motion.
The HRT team said of Nadia and IHMC in the nomination:
Researchers at IHMC developed Anticipatory and Adaptive Footstep Streaming for Teleoperated Bipedal Robots. It retargets user steps to robot footstep locations, allowing the robot to utilise its own dynamics for locomotion, ensuring better balance and stability. The method anticipates user footsteps to minimise delays between when the user initiates and completes a step and when the robot does it. Additionally, the system autonomously adjusts the robot’s steps to account for its surrounding terrain,
overcoming challenges posed by environmental mismatches between the user’s flatground setup and the robot’s uneven terrain.
“It's a deep honor to have our Nadia project be recognized in this way,” says Senior Research Scientist Dr. Robert Griffin, who leads the robotics team at IHMC. “IHMC has always prided itself on its research contributions to the field and watching the evolution of humanoids as a discipline and industry from the time Nadia started in 2018 and 2019 to 2025 has been nothing short of astonishing.”
“We're quite excited for the recognition of our project's contribution to this revolution and are excited to see what the future holds, both for humanoids at large and for our future contributions to the field.”
The Nadia platform, which was retired in the fall of 2025 to make way for IHMC’s next generation platform named Alex, aimed to develop highly mobile ground robots that can function in indoor environments where stairs, ladders, and debris would require the same range of motion as a human.
As mentioned, Alex, IHMC’s next iteration humanoid, is under development supported by funding from the U.S. Office of Naval Research. The research goals for Alex include design and integration of nextgeneration controllers for outdoor urban operations, enhanced design of behaviors for building exploration, integration of a behavior cloning pipeline, and improved simulation environment.
The aim is for Alex and its successors to be robust and yet nimble enough to operate in operational environments where the risk to human responders is high, from military scenarios to disaster response.
In the winners’ announcement, Hallewell congratulated those recognized for advancing the field of humanoid robotics. “We’re proud to be part of this exciting journey and inspired by the ongoing achievements of the humanoid robotics community,” he said.
IHMC is a not-for-profit research institute of the Florida University System where researchers pioneer science and technology aimed at leveraging and extending human capabilities. IHMC researchers and staff collaborate extensively with the government, industry and academia to help develop breakthrough technologies. IHMC research partners have included: DARPA, the National Science Foundation, NASA, Army, Navy, Air Force, National Institutes of Health, IBM, Microsoft, Honda, Boeing, Lockheed, and many others.

FLORIDA LAUNCHES OPERATION
SENIOR SHIELD TO PROTECT OLDER ADULTS FROM SCAMS AND EXPLOITATION
Yesterday, Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins and Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA) Secretary Michelle Branham announced the launch of Operation Senior Shield (OSS), a new, statewide initiative designed to protect older Floridians from the growing threat of scams, fraud, and financial exploitation.
Operation Senior Shield provides older adults, caregivers, and families with fast, free scam alerts, enhanced statewide coordination with law enforcement, and critical tools to stay informed and secure. This initiative reflects Florida’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its rapidly growing senior population while simultaneously empowering them to recognize and quickly respond to threats.
Lieutenant Governor Collins highlighted the importance of swift and aggressive action, stating, "Our seniors have spent their lives serving their families and communities, and they deserve to be protected from criminals who target them. Operation Senior Shield is our answer to that threat and a mission to keep seniors safe. Too many older Floridians are being targeted by scammers, and it is time to push back and take this fight directly to them."
Lieutenant Governor Collins continued, "With real-time alerts, a statewide fraud strike team, and tools that help seniors recognize scams before they happen, we are putting the power back in their hands. Florida is not an easy target on my watch. I am grateful to Secretary Branham and Governor DeSantis for backing this effort as we work to protect the people who mean so much to our state."
Secretary Michelle Branham emphasized the personal impact of this exploitation and the urgency behind the new program. "As a state, we recognize how serious – and how personal – this issue is for so many Florida families," said Secretary Branham. "When a senior is targeted or exploited, it doesn’t just affect their bank account – it shakes their dignity, their confidence, and
their sense of security. I’ve seen firsthand what that looks like for someone I love, and it stays with you. That is why Operation Senior Shield means so much to me. We are taking decisive action to push back, stay ahead of these criminals, and give our seniors the protection and peace of mind they deserve."
Operation Senior Shield delivers a comprehensive defense strategy, including:
• Real-Time Scam Alerts: A free alert system delivering timely, critical information on scams circulating in Florida and across the nation. Seniors and caregivers will receive advanced notice of threats before scammers reach their door, inbox, or phone.
• Statewide Fraud Strike Team: A specialized, multi-disciplinary team comprised of cybersecurity experts, law enforcement, state agencies, community leaders, and a senior representative. This team will work collaboratively to share intelligence, proactively raise awareness, and respond quickly to emerging threats.
• Education & Prevention Tools: Easyto-understand resources and engaging, hands-on experiences, including innovative “scam the scammers” exercises. Under guidance from ethical hackers and cybersecurity experts, seniors will learn how schemes work in a safe environment, gaining the confidence and skills to recognize and stop scams before they take hold.
Operation Senior Shield also encourages all Floridians to actively engage in the effort: talk to the seniors in your life, review suspicious emails or calls together, and share the alerts with family, neighbors, and community groups. These important conversations help protect more seniors and strengthen relationships across the state. Florida continues to lead the nation in protecting older adults. With Operation Senior Shield, seniors are safer, empowered, and supported – and scammers are on notice. For more information or to sign up for alerts, visit opseniorshieldfl.com.

“These individuals embody what it means to lead boldly,” Keller said. “They are the very definition of excellence, purpose, innovation and courage. With them, the Lewis Bear Jr. College of Business is truly exceptional.”
This year, the holiday foster program will be split into two date ranges. The Thanksgiving option will run through Dec. 3. The Christmas option will span Dec. 17 - Jan. 5. This allows potential fosters to participate in either holiday or both!
Those interested should complete a foster application, and staff will review the applications to determine the pet that will best fit each foster. The shelter will provide everything a foster parent needs to care for the animal, including food, toys, treats, a harness and a leash.
"We're trying to encourage more of our community members to foster some of our awesome animals, especially through the holidays, to give them a break from the shelter," said Randy Lambert, Santa Rosa County Animal Services Chief. "The shelter is completely full, and getting these animals
into loving homes, even temporarily, will ultimately help them find their forever home."
After foster applications are reviewed, shelter staff will reach out directly to schedule pick-up and drop-off times.
Staff also recommends scheduling time to meet animals before picking them up for fostering, but all pets available for adoption online can be fostered. This program gives pets a break from the shelter environment and the opportunity to spend the holidays in a loving foster home. Foster homes give the shelter great insight into the animal's behavior and reduce the number of shelter pets to care for during the holidays.
The shelter asks that foster parents take lots of photos and videos of their temporary pets and share feedback on the animals' behavior, likes and dislikes.
Santa Rosa County Animal Services' mission is to build a society in which every animal is treated with compassion; we provide humane shelter and care for the approximately 3,500 lost, displaced and victimized animals who enter our doors every year. Our services protect animals and educate the community through outreach, intervention, and enforcement.

HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION RAISES
Baptist Health Care Foundation raised more than $93,500 to benefit its Mammogram Fund. The fund provides access to mammograms for uninsured individuals in our communities, as well as education and support for early detection. The Foundation works with community partners and donors year-round to help raise funds and awareness for this lifesaving effort.
The program remains vitally important as Baptist continues to eliminate barriers for those in need of screenings. Over the past 16 years, the Foundation’s Mammogram Fund has provided screenings for 3,024 patients. As a result of these screenings, 813 patients required additional testing, and 36 were diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Early detection saves lives, and thanks to our donors, thousands of women have received critical screenings they otherwise could not afford,” said Heather Moorer, Foundation director.
The Foundation would like to thank our community partners Pensacola Breast Cancer Association, Pink Pirates of Navarre, Tate High School Booster Club, Your Local Honda Dealer, The Grand Marlin Pensacola Beach, Jewelers Trade Shop and Oyster Bay Boutique Hotel, as well as all donors who supported this initiative.

EDUCATION EMPLOYER
RANKS
BY MILITARY TIMES,
NO. 15 NATIONALLY ON "BEST FOR VETS" LIST
The University of West Florida has been ranked No. 15 on the national Best for Vets: Colleges list and No. 1 on the Best for Vets: Education Employers list released by Military Times. UWF also ranked No. 3 among all Florida institutions and No. 1 in the State University System of Florida.
“These rankings display the amount of pride and care we take in our veterans and military-affiliated students, as well as employees, here at UWF,” said UWF Interim President Manny Diaz Jr. “While we celebrate this accomplishment, we continue to strive to do even more for our military students and veteran employees as a University.”
The Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges list evaluates the services colleges and universities provide to veterans, allowing them to make informed decisions on career planning and educational benefits afforded by their military service. At UWF, those services include the VetSuccess program, a partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that helps veterans and eligible dependents transition into college life and reach their academic goals. UWF also offers the Students Who Intern and Mentor, or SWIM, team, which connects military-affiliated students with dedicated mentors who provide personalized guidance on study skills, stress management and navigating campus resources. Together, these programs ensure veterans receive the support and resources they need to succeed both in the classroom and beyond.
“Being named to the Military Times Best for Vets: Colleges list is a direct reflection of our university’s unwavering commitment to those who have served,” said Lori Milkeris, director and veterans counselor of the MVRC. “This recognition isn’t about one program; it’s about the collective dedication of our faculty, staff and campus partners who work every day to ensure military-affiliated students
feel supported, understood and prepared for success. From our VetSuccess on Campus partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to the wraparound services we provide, we remain deeply committed to making the transition to higher education as seamless and empowering as possible.”
UWF’s distinction as a Best for Vets Employer reflects its long-standing commitment to supporting those who have served.
The University actively recruits through military job fairs and veteran-specific job boards while fostering partnerships with programs such as the Transition Assistance Program, National Guard and Reserve units, and professional military associations. Once veterans join the UWF team, they benefit from comprehensive medical and life insurance, retirement contributions and paid leave accrual. UWF also prioritizes flexibility, offering flexible scheduling and full compliance with the Family and Medical Leave Act to accommodate reservists and service-connected needs. These efforts demonstrate UWF’s dedication to creating a workplace where veterans are valued, supported and empowered to thrive.
This August, UWF also launched the newly formed Office of Military Services. This office allows for the University to streamline support for military affiliated students by uniting the University’s Army and Air Force ROTC programs and the Military and Veteran Resource Center under the Alystock, Witkin, Kreis and Overholtz Center for Leadership.
The Military Times Best for Vets survey is sent to colleges and universities across the nation asking about their programs for veterans. The survey results are then analyzed, along with public data about colleges and universities obtained from the Department of Education and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and turned into an official ranking.
