nformation Warfare Training Command (IWTC) NAS Pensacola Corry Station promoted IT2 Indigo S. Hart to first class petty officer through the Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Meritorious Advancement Program (MAP) July 9. According to the Navy Personnel Command website, MAP is designed to recognize superior performance and authorizes commanding officers to advance the best and most deserving E-3 through E-5 Sailors to the next higher pay grade. A strong MAP application includes community involvement, advanced education, collateral duties, command involvement and other vital performance indicators. Hart has a history of excellent performance. She was selected as IWTC Corry Station’s 2017 Junior Sailor of the Year, Junior Instructor of the Year, is currently the Joint Cyber Course supervisor and certified as a Master Training Specialist. As the IT “A” School Microsoft Certified Professional (Windows 7) leading petty officer and course supervisor resulting in a 92 percent grade point average with zero academic attrition, her efforts were critical in delivering highly capable technicians to the fleet potentially safeguarding hundreds of Department of Defense warfight-
ing networks afloat and ashore. She has served as a command career counselor and has been active in the morale, welfare and recreation committee, holiday party committee and petty officer association secretary. Her community service hours are very diverse and spread to multiple organizations around the Pensacola community. “I actually found out because my friends sent me pictures of the Fleet Training Management and Planning System showing that I had picked it up,” Hart said. “I was still very special to me to have the executive officer, command master chief, and my friends all at the presentation.” “IT2 Hart is my number one second class petty officer at my command,” IWTC Corry Station’s Commanding Officer Cmdr. Chad Smith said. “She is a phenomenal leader and professional who operates well above her paygrade. Her investment in the mission and Sailors has made a tremendous impact and exceeds all expectations every time. A model Sailor in all regards, her work ethic sets

an example for all too emulate. There is no finer candidate for the Meritorious Advancement Program.” According to Hart, the MAP program was not her motivation to succeed. “I didn’t have the mindset that I needed to work hard in order to get MAP,” Hart added. “I had the mindset to do the best that I could every day and give to this
command everything I have. I never expect to get rewarded or recognized for my everyday work. I come to work to give and not get back. There is a mindset that some people have that you need to step over other people to succeed in the military but it really takes a team. My department, triad and command really make me feel like they truly care about my success. Be-
ing awarded MAP by the triad in front of my command meant a great deal to me.” The Navy introduced MAP in July 2015, replacing the Navy’s Command Advancement Program. Meritorious promotion is part of the Navy’s ongoing talent management initiatives used to empower the command triad to advance their top-performing Sailors, advancing them when they are ready for the next level of responsibility. Navy retention and advancement policies are aimed at ensuring the best-qualified, highest-performing Sailors are promoted and retained. The MAP program supplements traditional advancement via exams to ensure that occurs, and to empower command leadership to personally identify those who are immediately ready for promotion. What advice does Hart give to other Sailors? “Find your motivation to be the best possible you,” Hart said. “For me it is a picture of my son in my planner. When I get overwhelmed I look at that. I felt that my department wanted me to succeed and they believed in me. They are invested in my career and success. This really helped me to believe in myself. There is a mindset that some people have that you need to step over other people to succeed in the military. My department, triad and command really make me feel like they truly care about my success.” For more from Center for Information Warfare Training, visit www.navy.mil/local/cid.
