HALLOZINE PROVES PRINT'S UNDEAD

et ready for a spooktacu-

lar celebration of zines and indie media at Pensacola’s first-ever zine fest—HalloZine Festival.

Hosted and organized by 309 Punk Project, this all-new, two-day event is set to be a spooky celebration of zines and indie media. Held on the day before and the day of Halloween, HalloZine Festival is a 2025 Foo Foo Fest grant-funded event and will kick off this year’s official festival lineup.

“At 309 Punk Project, we have been reading zines, making them and collecting them, and we have a zine archive at our project,” 309 Punk Project Special Projects Coordinator Lauren Anzaldo said. “We appreciate and enjoy zines and everything about zine culture.”

Taking place at the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center in downtown Pensacola, HalloZine Festival will feature a zine market of local and national zines by DIY creators, an exhibition on the evolution of zine culture, engaging guest speakers, film screenings, workshops by zine makers and creatives and more.

If you are unfamiliar, zines are small, self-published, low-circulation booklets created by artists to share their work, personal expression or interests. These self-made booklets typically contain a combination of creative graphics, photographs, personal essays and poetry.

Zines gained popularity in the 1990s, particularly within the American punk scene, where they

served as a form of activism and a creative outlet for expressing personal or political viewpoints.

Today, zines are experiencing a resurgence, fueled by their raw, handmade charm. In an online world polished to perfection, these little booklets offer a breath of authenticity—a space where creativity thrives without filters or algorithms.

“We’ve noticed that recently, zines are back in a huge way. A lot of people are making zines, distributing them and trading them. Even though Pensacola has had a long history of zine-making over the decades, we’ve never had a zine festival before. So, it just seems like a really good time to hold this festival,” Anzaldo explained.

This free event will also feature a series of DIY maker stations for zine-making, button-making and block printing, as well as a Take a Zine, Leave a Zine trading table.

Over the course of the two-day event, guests will have the chance to enjoy a series of engaging keynote speakers from local and national zine-makers, including Julia Arredondo (Vice Versa Press and Curandera Press), Alex Wrekk (Stolen Sharpie Revolution) and Julia Gorton (Beat It! Zine).

HalloZine Festival kicks off at 11 am on Thursday, October 30 at the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center in downtown Pensacola.

Day one will kick off with the opening of the zine market and exhibit, where attendees will be able to purchase and trade zines, as well as learn more about the zine’s roots.

Following the market and exhibit, there will be a showing of the zine documentary, $100 & a T-Shirt. After the film wraps up, lunch will be served. Next on Thursday’s agenda will be a presentation by artist Julie Arredondo, in which she will share stories from her career, discuss her life as a traveling artist and some of the zines that inspire her.

Following Arredondo’s presentation, attendees will have the option to attend several afternoon workshops. A pizza party will be held to round off the evening’s festivities.

HalloZine will pick back up on Friday, October 30 at 11 am. Similar to Thursday, the zine market and exhibit will be open at the start of the day, followed by a short zinerelated video presentation. The Franken-Zine workshop will be held at 11:30 am, focusing on the disappearance and revival of print media.

After a brief lunch, Alex Wrekk— author of Stolen Sharpie Revolution (SSR) and SSR 2—will kick off the afternoon with a talk exploring the collaborative, creative and community-driven roots of zine culture.

Next on the schedule is artist Julia Gorton, who worked on a DIY music fan zine and spent much of the 1970s photographing iconic musicians in NYC. Gorton’s talk will feature stories of her photography and analog production during this time period. Gordon’s talk will conclude the event, but the fun will continue at the HalloZine afterparty.

Starting at 7 pm, the iconic Handlebar in downtown Pensacola will host a spooktacular Hallow -

een afterparty featuring a costume contest, spooky drinks and more haunted fun. Like any party at the Handlebar, there will be plenty of music, with a DJ playing plenty of goth, dark wave and post-punk music. The afterparty is open to individuals ages 21 and older, and the cover charge is $25 in advance, or $30 on the day of the event. For tickets and information on the official HalloZine afterparty, visit thehandlebar850.com.

Browse through a variety of unique zines, meet talented artists and create your own zine and

artwork on October 30 and 31 at the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center located at 117 E. Government St. in downtown Pensacola. Whether you’re a seasoned zine enthusiast or just curious about this creative medium, HalloZine Fest offers a little something for everyone. Daytime HalloZine events at the Voices of Pensacola Multicultural Center are free for all ages, but registration is required to attend. To register, visit bit.ly/hallozinefest. JAZZ FOR JUSTICE 2025: MUSIC WITH

MEANING IN DOWNTOWN

PENSACOLA, FEATURING NEW ORLEANS’ PRESERVATION HALL BRASS BAND

Get ready for another unforgettable celebration where music and community come together. Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) is proud to host Jazz for Justice once more on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Museum Plaza, 120 Church St., in the heart of Downtown Pensacola. Admission is free.

Made possible by the Pensacola Foo Foo Festival, Jazz for Justice brings the best of New Orleans and Pensacola jazz to the stage. Attendees will experience world-class jazz performances, delicious food from local restaurants and food trucks, engaging vendors, and family-friendly activities, all while supporting free civil legal help for those most in need across North Florida.

A Showcase of Brass and Jazz

This year’s Jazz for Justice lineup is tuned to perfection, with an afternoon that swings from smooth grooves to high-energy brass explosions.

Kicking things off is a hometown favorite, Whiskey and Water (Pensacola), whose sound flows as effortlessly as their name. With silky jazz vocals poured over Louisiana blues, a splash of reggae, and a kick of Southern rock guitar, they strike the perfect chord to get the crowd swaying.

Keeping the music alive, Bon Bon Vivant (New Orleans) turns up the tempo with a performance that’s equal parts spectacle and soul. Blending indie grit, Americana heart, and that unmistakable Crescent City flair, frontwoman Abigail Cosio and saxophonist Jeremy Kelley craft songs that dance between revelry and reflection, proof that their music is as much storytelling as it is rhythm.

Bringing it all home with a crescendo, the legendary Preservation Hall Brass Band (New Orleans) takes the stage as the event’s headlining act. This all-star brass ensemble, led by trumpeter Mark Braud, carries the torch of New Orleans’ musical heritage. From timeless parade anthems to spirituals

and classic jazz standards, their sound is the heartbeat of the Big Easy, and it’s guaranteed to bring the crowd to its feet.

Family-Friendly Fun

Jazz for Justice offers more than music; it’s a true community event. Families can enjoy interactive science activities from the Pensacola MESS Hall, games, and more. Bring kids, grandparents, for an afternoon that feels like a neighborhood block party with worldclass music. Spread out a blanket, set up lawn chairs, and let the little ones dance in the grass while relaxing under the autumn sky. Jazz for Justice makes it easy to enjoy good food, great music, and quality time together in the heart of Downtown Pensacola.

Legal Services of North Florida

Jazz for Justice is not just about great music; it’s about making a difference. Legal Services of North Florida (LSNF) provides free civil legal help to low-income individuals and families across 16 counties, handling nearly 8,000 cases each year that impact more than 20,000 lives. Attendance and support ensure LSNF can provide civil legal aid to low-income individuals and families at no cost. ESCAMBIA COUNTY REMINDS PUBLIC TO USE 911 FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY

Escambia County Public Safety reminds residents to call 911 for emergencies only, which will help ensure that ambulances and EMS resources can remain focused on responding to emergency calls instead of non-emergency situations.

Residents should keep in mind that not all medical situations require 911, and some issues are better handled by urgent care, primary care, a pharmacy or self-care.

Escambia County Emergency Communications has answered approximately 95,000 calls to 911 so far this year. Only 16% of these calls required emergency EMS transportation to a hospital, indicating that many calls were non-emergent and did not necessarily warrant a call to 911.

Do not call 911 for non-emergent situations such as:

• Non-life-threatening medical situations : Minor injuries or medical conditions that do not require immediate medical care do not warrant a 911 call.

If you or someone you know has mild food poisoning, a slight fever, nausea, or a minor cut, consider calling a physician or going to urgent care.

• Requests for information : Calls for information, such as directory assistance, driving directions or road closures, should not be made to 911.

• Minor assistance : Do not call 911 if you need minor assistance, such as reaching something high up or across the room.

• Rides to the hospital : Do not call 911 just for a ride to the hospital if there is not an emergency medical situation. If you are unsure whether the situation is a true emergency, officials recommend calling 911 and letting the call-taker determine whether you need emergency help. Consider the following guide when determining who to call for non-emergency medical situations:

• Urgent Care (urgent but not life-threatening): Sprains, severe cold/cough, minor burns, skin infections

• Primary Care (symptoms that don't go away): Chronic symptoms, back pain, stomachaches, high blood pressure management

• Pharmacy : Questions about prescriptions or over-the-counter medications

• Self-care (minor injury or illness): Sunburn, minor cuts, seasonal allergies Escambia County offers the following tips when identifying an emergency that requires immediate assistance:

A medical emergency, such as someone who is unconscious, gasping for air or not breathing, experiencing an allergic reaction, having chest pain, having uncontrollable bleeding, or any other symptoms that require immediate medical attention

• A fire

• A crime, especially if in progress

• A car crash, especially if someone is injured In an emergency situation that warrants a call to 911, be prepared to answer the calltaker’s questions, which may include:

• The location of the emergency, including the street address

• The phone number you are calling from

• The nature of the emergency

• Details about the emergency, such as a physical description of a person who may have committed a crime, a description of any fire that may be burning, or a description of injuries or symptoms being experienced by a person having a medical emergency

Escambia County Emergency Medical Services, a division of the Escambia County Department of Public Safety, is a provider of critical care, advanced life support, basic life support and bariatric transports. EMS provides these services to the over 300,000 residents of Escambia County.

SANTA ROSA COUNTY COMPLETES $4 MILLION DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS IN RANCHETTES SUBDIVISION

Santa Rosa County has completed a major drainage improvement project in the Ranchettes subdivision aimed at reducing flooding and improving stormwater management. The nearly $4 million project was funded through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), administered by the Florida Division of Emergency Management, in response to damages caused by Hurricane Sally in 2020.

“I am excited to share the completion of the Ranchettes drainage improvements,” said Commissioner Colten Wright, District 5. “This project will provide significant relief to residents by reducing flooding concerns, particularly during heavy rainfall events like those experienced in April 2014. I’m proud of our team’s ability to leverage grant funding, local Option Sales Tax, and general revenues to make such a significant investment in our infrastructure.”

The project included the construction of swales, installation of new driveway pipes, and the addition of inlet structures and stormwater pipes to direct runoff into a designated pond. These improvements are designed to mitigate

future structural flooding for approximately 300 homes across the Ranchettes, Northridge, and Whisper Bay subdivisions, considering a 100-year storm event.

In addition to protecting homes, the project enhances public safety by reducing the risk of road damage and closures that can hinder emergency and personal vehicle access during and after storms. The Ranchettes subdivision was originally built before stormwater control regulations were in place in Santa Rosa County.

The area has experienced repeated flooding, including damage to 44 private residences during the April 2014 flood, and structural flooding during Hurricane Sally, as well as heavy rain events in September 2004, April 2005, and June 2012.

Eighty-eight percent of the project was funded through grant funding and 12% funded through sales tax and general funding. This project was funded in part by sales tax dollars.

A full project overview video, featuring project experts, is available on YouTube.

The Santa Rosa LTRG serves as a vital coalition of community partners working together to support residents in the aftermath of disasters by coordinating resources, services, and recovery efforts. Under BRACE’s leadership, the group will strengthen collaboration, streamline case management, and ensure disaster-impacted families receive the long-term support they need to rebuild their lives.

“Santa Rosa County has a strong history of neighbors helping neighbors, and BRACE is honored to support that tradition,” said Dr. Nick Jackson, BRACE CEO. “By working alongside Santa Rosa County Emergency Management, faith-based organizations, nonprofits, and local leaders, we will ensure that recovery resources reach those who need them most—efficiently, effectively, and compassionately.”

Santa Rosa County Emergency Management welcomed the expanded partnership.

“Having BRACE step into this leadership role strengthens our community’s ability to recover from disasters,” said Tom Lloyd, Santa Rosa County Public Safety Director. “We are confident that BRACE’s experience and expertise will provide strong guidance for long-term recovery in Santa Rosa County.”

Championship and multiple conference titles, as well as the currently undefeated football team.

“These victories reflect the teamwork and pride that define our student-athletes and inspire Argo Nation,” Diaz said. “We are building champions for life.”

In addition to celebrating achievements, Diaz used the address to reflect on the true purpose of a university – to be “a living network of people joined together in the shared pursuit of learning, discovery and growth.” He spoke about the Greek word arete, meaning “virtue” or “excellence,” displayed in UWF’s athletic facilities, noting that it captures the spirit of what it means to be an Argonaut. He emphasized that UWF embodies this pursuit through exploration, innovation and collaboration across every discipline, fostering an environment where students are encouraged to think critically, engage in open dialogue and learn from one another.

Looking ahead, Diaz outlined priorities including construction of the Darrell Gooden Stadium, expanded wellness initiatives, the creation of the Office of Military Services and a renewed focus on research and economic development through new partnerships and innovation hubs.

“These initiatives represent not a change in direction, but a continuation of the forward momentum that defines this university,” Diaz said. “However long I have the opportunity to serve as interim president, my commitment is to continue advancing this momentum, ensuring that every member of our community has the opportunity to thrive.”

Diaz ended his address on an inspiring note, reflecting on the University’s mission and momentum for the future.

“UWF is more than an institution — it’s a community of purpose and possibility. Here, innovation takes shape, learning transforms lives, and collaboration strengthens our future. As we move into the year ahead, let us do so with optimism, unity and shared commitment to excellence in all that we do.”

Since its founding in 2006, BRACE has coordinated disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts across Escambia County and beyond. The organization

The Santa Rosa LTRG will convene local partners regularly to assess recovery needs, allocate resources, and ensure that individuals and families affected by disasters have access to assistance. BRACE will serve as program manager, facilitating meetings, coordinating case management, and supporting fundraising efforts to sustain recovery work.
