ESCAMBIA COUNTY REMINDS

PUBLIC TO USE 911 FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY

Escambia County Public Safety reminds residents to call 911 for emergencies only, which will help ensure that ambulances and EMS resources can remain focused on responding to emergency calls instead of non-emergency situations.

Residents should keep in mind that not all medical situations require 911, and some issues are better handled by urgent care, primary care, a pharmacy or self-care.

Escambia County Emergency Communications has answered approximately 95,000 calls to 911 so far this year. Only 16% of these calls required emergency EMS transportation to a hospital, indicating that many calls were non-emergent and did not necessarily warrant a call to 911.

Do not call 911 for non-emergent situations such as:

• Non-life-threatening medical situations : Minor injuries or medical conditions that do not require immediate medical care do not warrant a 911 call. If you or someone you know has mild food poisoning, a slight fever, nausea, or a minor cut, consider calling a physician or going to urgent care.

• Requests for information : Calls for information, such as directory assistance, driving directions or road closures, should not be made to 911.

• Minor assistance : Do not call 911 if you need minor assistance, such as reaching something high up or across the room.

• Rides to the hospital : Do not call 911 just for a ride to the hospital if there is not an emergency medical situation. If you are unsure whether the situation is a true emergency, officials recommend calling 911 and letting the call-taker determine whether you need emergency help. Consider the following guide when determining who to call for non-emergency medical situations:

• Urgent Care (urgent but not life-threatening): Sprains, severe cold/cough, minor burns, skin infections

• Primary Care (symptoms that don't go away): Chronic symptoms, back pain, stomachaches, high blood pressure management

• Pharmacy : Questions about prescriptions or over-the-counter medications

• Self-care (minor injury or illness): Sunburn, minor cuts, seasonal allergies Escambia County offers the following tips when identifying an emergency that requires immediate assistance:

• A medical emergency, such as someone who is unconscious, gasping for air or not breathing, experiencing an allergic reaction, having chest pain, having uncontrollable bleeding, or any other symptoms that require immediate medical attention

• A fire

• A crime, especially if in progress

• A car crash, especially if someone is injured In an emergency situation that warrants a call to 911, be prepared to answer the calltaker’s questions, which may include:

• The location of the emergency, including the street address

• The phone number you are calling from

• The nature of the emergency

• Details about the emergency, such as a physical description of a person who may have committed a crime, a description of any fire that may be burning, or a description of injuries or symptoms being experienced by a person having a medical emergency

Escambia County Emergency Medical Services, a division of the Escambia County Department of Public Safety, is a provider of critical care, advanced life support, basic life support and bariatric transports. EMS provides these services to the over 300,000 residents of Escambia County.

DR. GRIER WILLIAMS SCHOOL OF MUSIC PRESENTS MATTHEW GRAYBIL AS PART OF THE KAMERMAN PIANO SERIES

The University of West Florida Dr. Grier Williams School of Music will present the Kamerman Piano Series at UWF featuring guest performer Matthew Graybil. The performance will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. in the Rolfs Music Hall at the Center for Fine and Performing Arts on the UWF Pensacola campus.

Renowned as an “exceptional young artist” by the New Yorker and as a “major talent” by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune since making his orchestral debut at age 14, Matthew Graybil has gained an international reputation as a talented piano recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. Graybil’s solo career features performances in major music capitals of the world including Mexico City, New York, Paris and Toronto, in venues such as Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center, the Lincoln Center and

more. Having studied music since age 6, earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School, Graybil’s career highlights works from the 20th and 21st centuries, reflected in his first solo album in which he “becomes so at one with the music that the line between performer and composer vanishes” marking him as “one of the most sensitive, poetic young pianists to debut on record in recent memory,” according to Fanfare Magazine.

The Dr. Grier Williams School of Music would like to thank the Kamerman Family and Jeannie Kamerman for their support of this and future Kamerman Piano Series events at UWF. UWF INCREASES CAPITAL CAMPAIGN GOAL TO $100M, ANNOUNCES NEW ADVANCEMENT LEADERSHIP

The University of West Florida is building on its record-breaking fundraising success, increasing the goal for its “Here for Good” capital campaign from $90 million to $100 million. The campaign, which launched publicly in April 2024, has already surpassed its original goal thanks to the overwhelming generosity of donors, alumni and community partners.

This past year, UWF saw sustained growth in philanthropic support, raising more than $15.7 million. More than 4,300 alumni gave back to the University, and 12 programs, scholarships and facilities received new names through donor support. This followed a record-breaking year when $31.4 million was raised.

“By increasing our goal to $100 million, we’re not just building on momentum –we’re reaffirming our commitment to creating opportunities that will impact students, faculty and our region for years to come,” said Manny Diaz Jr., UWF interim president.

As the University builds on this success, UWF also announces a leadership transition within University Advancement. Howard Reddy, vice president for University Advancement, has accepted the role of vice president of University Advancement, president and CEO of the Foundation at East Tennessee State University and will depart UWF after years of dedicated service that elevated the University’s fundraising and alumni engagement efforts. Under his leadership, the University launched its most ambitious campaign to date and achieved historic philanthropic results. UWF’s Tori Bennett has been appointed as interim vice president for University Advancement.

“It has been a great privilege to serve UWF,” Reddy said. “I have no doubt that the Division of University Advancement will continue to thrive under Tori's exceptional leadership.”

GULF WINDS CREDIT UNION HOSTS ANNUAL UNITE! CONFERENCE AT UNIVERSITY OF WEST FLORIDA

On Columbus Day, Gulf Winds Credit Union hosted their annual Unite! Conference for all team members at the University of West Florida. This event, focused on community, teamwork, and impact, served as an opportunity for the Gulf Winds team to come together and enjoy a motivational learning experience. With inspirational presentations, hands-on team-building activities, and fun, team members left the conference as One Team with One Mission.

This year, the keynote speaker was motivational speaker, Kevin Brown, author of Unleashing Your Hero. Brown gave the team insight into his own Hero Effect, noting the importance of writing our own visions and believing in those around us. The Gulf Winds team also enjoyed an inspiring presentation from financial leadership coach Cynthia Campbell, who encouraged team members to begin each day with positivity and embrace small actions to create change. Throughout the conference, President and CEO Daniel Souers and other members of the leadership team shared exciting developments that signaled a bright future for Gulf Winds.

“You will never go wrong pouring into your people,” said Pam Hatt, Chief Marketing Officer at Gulf Winds. “There is such a positive synergy that results when you take community impact and pair it with your purpose and your people. We all connected for impact while uniting for purpose, energized and left wanting more!”

The team’s breakout session, dubbed MannaCan, was centered around creative teamwork and community impact. Together, Manna Food Pantry staff, Gulf Winds’ event team, and the University of West Florida Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity helped to move and set up 7,005 pounds of food for the session. Gulf Winds team members were then separated into groups, and each team was given 480 cans of food to build a creative structure with. Groups were judged on teamwork, creativity, structural stability, and mission alignment. After the activity was completed, all cans were donated to Manna by Gulf Winds and brought back to the pantry, providing the equivalent of food for a day for 4,221 children, senior citizens, veterans, and others in need in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties.

“Gulf Winds has been part of the Manna family for over a decade,” said DeDe Flounlacker, Manna Executive Director. “Always finding meaningful ways to give, this donation from Gulf Winds will enable Manna to provide 12,664 nutritious meals for neighbors in need in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. We are so grateful for this partnership that impacts thousands of people each year.” Through collaboration, unity, and a deep sense of purpose, the day reinforced how each Gulf Winds team member can make an impact for members and each other.
