Daniel Andreu is a muralist and painter who transforms public spaces into visual stories that reflect the community and honor the strength, hope and dignity of everyday people. Although Pensacola is one of his main hubs, as a traveling artist he pulls inspiration from the places and people he visits.
Here in Pensacola, you’ll find his mural art adorning the tunnel entrance to Cordova Mall, highlighting the exterior brick walls of Arc Gateway and bringing a pop of magic to the walls of Dorothy’s Wizard of Oz-themed bar in downtown.
Keep up with Andreu’s adventures and see more of his artwork by following @artbyandreu on Instagram or visiting his website at artbyandreu.com.
What does being an artist mean to you?
Being an artist means using creativity as a form of service like turning walls into conversations that uplift communities. I was introduced to art early on by my dad, but my journey really began when I realized I could merge it with my background in public health to bring awareness, hope and connection to people. It was an organic relationship to begin working with wellness and nonprofit leaders, trying to tell their stories.
Of all the mediums you could’ve chosen, what led you to making murals?
I was really lucky to have an amazing magnet art program in high school where I got to try all mediums. I used everything from spray paint to airbrush, rollers and house paint, which made it a fun process where I got to play. I credit my upbringing in art for that openness. In public health, we always bring stakeholders to the table, and I love the idea of doing the same in art—fitting each piece to a space and being inspired by the people who live and work around it. Murals are for the people! It’s a collaborative endeavor.
Who is a big inspiration to you and your artwork, and why?
I’d say a mix of Salvador Dalí, 90s X-Men comics and my high school art teacher, Ms. McGill. Dalí taught me to dream beyond logic, comics taught me about

dynamic energy and color, and Ms. McGill taught me that breaking the rules makes one unique—she loved my wild ideas but also scolded me a lot.
What helps you map out how a mural piece will come together?
I start by listening to the community, the space and the story that needs to be told. From there, I sketch compositions that balance emotion, color and symbolism until everything aligns with the message we want to leave behind. We go back and forth. In fact, spending time in the space helps me understand the mission.
Looking ahead, what are your professional and personal goals for the next year or so?
I’d love to work with professional sports teams, the Special Olympics and organizations that inspire me. I’ve been privileged to paint in 13 different states this year, and I’m hoping to add a few more. I don’t really think in terms of goals just projects that make me curious and excited. After a nine-year career in healthcare, I basically feel like a big kid who finally gets to color on the walls.

French Quarter Fashion in Pensacola
Hemline brings a fashion experience reminiscent of the iconic French Quarter to downtown Pensacola, as envisioned by franchisee owners Tahnee Judice and Jimmy Stapleton. As a college student Judice fell in love with the New Orleansbased Hemline. Fast forward to today, now a mother of three daughters, she wanted a boutique that caters to women at every stage of life. For this reason, shoppers will find everything from fun, youthful pieces to polished, mature styles. Hemline’s curated selections emphasize variety, accessibility and exclusive styles from partnerships with designers like Amanda Uprichard that set it apart from other retail and clothing shops. Featuring wellknown favorites like eco-friendly Mavi denim alongside contemporary labels such as Alice & Olivia, the boutique’s selections span multiple price points, guaranteeing that shoppers on different budgets can find pieces they love. The boutique’s collection will cater to a broad age range from mid-20s to those well into their 60s and beyond, embracing all shapes and sizes. Shoppers can look forward to vibrant prints, fresh colors and versatile styles that suit any lifestyle without compromising personality. Longtime Panhandle residents Tony and Jen Lindberg have embarked on a journey to bring a fun new experience to downtown Pensacola, one that invites families and friends to savor an innovative cocktail-infused scoop or familyfriendly dessert. Inspired by their travels—and by local favorites like the spiked milkshakes once served at the former Tin Cow on Palafox Street—the Lindbergs sought to bring something new to the downtown dining scene. This search led to them opening Pensacola’s first Tipsy Scoop: a unique business concept created by founder Melissa Tavvs, blending artisanal ice cream and classic cocktails into a flavorful fusion. At Tipsy Scoop Pensacola, guests can indulge in a selection of nine flagship flavors plus Pensacola-exclusive creations like the Blue Chair Bay Spiked Key Lime Pie and Sunset Spritz, seasonal specials and non-alcoholic treats crafted especially for younger visitors. Adding to the experience are monthly classes led by co-owner Jen Lindberg, which include a complementary Tipsy Scoop glass as a momento. Classes run year-round, exploring seasonal themes and limited-edition flavors, allowing participants to dive into the art of crafting ice cream cocktails that can be recreated at home. The spirit of Tipsy Scoop Pensacola is captured in its iconic mural, featuring a swirling ice cream cone in a martini glass, accented by a cheerful cherry and Pensacola’s signature beach ball water tower: the artwork symbolizes the perfect combination of local coastal beauty and innovative flavors. Tipsy Scoopy is open Sunday through Thursday from 1 to 10 pm, Friday from 12 to 10 pm and Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm. Never miss out on cocktail creation classes, seasonal delights and more by following Tipsy Scoop Pensacola on Facebook.

Somewhere over the rainbow, in downtown Pensacola, a new bar and eatery has opened where everyone is welcome and celebrated, as long as you’re not wicked.
Officially open as of October 22, Dorothy’s brings something truly unique to the downtown area—and with a fun theatrical twist.
Follow the hand-painted yellow brick road not only to the center of the dance floor but also toward made-from-scratch Portuguese-Southern fare, enchanting elixirs fit for the greatest and most terrible witches and wizards and a plethora of references to the world of the wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Dorothy’s was dreamt into existence by OASIS Florida Executive Director Kurt Goodman, General Manager Benjamin Haupt and Steel Pony Diner CoOwners Eric Michael and Kyree Whitehead. The bar and restaurant boasts colorful Wizard of Oz-themed decor, craft cocktails, quality food and offers a new clubbing destination that is designed to celebrate everyone.
However, Dorothy’s is more than an exciting new nightlife experience, it’s a fundraising lifeline for OASIS Florida, a nonprofit dedicated to the prevention and spread of HIV and to support those who are affected by HIV/AIDS.
The for-profit bar and restaurant is a subsidiary of OASIS, and all the profits are spent toward funding the non-profit’s public health programs. OASIS provides everything from housing to food bank assistance for all four counties of Northwest Florida. Any service that a person living with HIV needs can be found through OASIS.

Dorothy’s slogan, “Where everyone is celebrated—just don’t be wicked,” effectively summarizes the overall mission. This inclusive restaurant and bar atmosphere was established as a creative way to help offset budget cuts for OASIS, which is expected to lose $1.6 million in funding due to state and federal budget cuts.

“The real goal is to make sure that no programs are being cut because of federal and state funding cuts,” Haupt said. “Anything in addition to that means more programs and more help going toward people who need it. Right now, OASIS is losing about $300,000 in state and federal funding, so we want to donate $300,000 by the end of the year, every year.”
Steel Pony Diner Co-Owners Eric Michael and Kyree Whitehead have partnered with Dorothy’s as the resident restaurateurs, specializing in Portuguese dishes combined with Southern classics.
“Eric Michael is the head chef and co-owns the restaurant with his husband [Whitehead],” Haupt explained. “He creates a combination of flavors from where he’s from—Fall River, Mass. and Portugal, where his family is from. His grandma cooked a lot of Portuguese food for him growing up, so that’s the flavor profile that they have brought to the bar world.”
Steel Pony will continue dishing up their crowd-favorite dishes at Dorothy’s while also curating a menu specifically with Dorothy’s in mind—bar foods, burgers, biscuits and gravy, loaded fries, sandwiches and more homemade, hand-battered, never frozen good eats—which they serve late into the night. Eventually, Dorothy’s and Steel Pony would like to bring more 24-hour sit-in dining options back to Pensacola.
All Steel Pony dishes are made with pristine detail and precision, such as their Prego Steak Sandwich with Portuguese soup, Reuben hot dog and even many vegan and gluten-free options for a different take on late-night bar food.
In addition to the quality food, Dorothy’s also serves themed craft cocktails and an assortment of Portuguese wines.
Bar-goers can try multiple Ozian elixirs such as the Judy Garland, a floral old-fashioned named after the famous Hollywood actress who played Miss Dorothy herself. Also on the menu is the crowd-favorite Curse of the Poppies, which is best described as a spicy hibiscus margarita, as well as Haupt’s personal favorite Oz’s Lilly, which is a twist on an aviation—made with black cherry, violet, lemon and gin.
“I wanted sophisticated, nice craft cocktails,” Haupt said. “But, I didn’t want anything too crazy that people didn’t know what it was. I want to make sure that everyone can feel like they can get a cocktail off the menu with the price point to match.”
In addition to curating Dorothy’s craft cocktail menu, Haupt went to work on projects around the restaurant, including painting the iconic yellow brick road that also doubles as a dance floor later into the evening hours.
Local artist Daniel Andreu, was commissioned to paint the larger than life murals that adorn the inside walls of Dorothy’s.
“We told [Andreu] that the restaurant was Wizard of Oz-themed, and he came in with his drawings and renderings, and we ultimately chose him to do the artwork because of his fantastic realism work,” Haupt said. “My goal for everything when it comes to the bar is that everything should be sophisticated and whimsical, which seems like they could be antonyms, but together I want the space to feel whimsically sophisticated because that perfectly encapsulates what the Wizard of Oz is.”
Andreu depicts the key faces of the Wizard of Oz characters, including the bar’s namesake. Dorothy’s visitors will find these murals illuminated under black lights, offering an extra special effect after the lights go down, as it highlights the outline of the faces.
While there are many Blue Angels murals throughout Pensacola, Dorothy’s houses an extra special one that is unlike any other—a portrayal of The Wicked Witch of the West chasing after the jets on her broomstick.
Located at 309 S. Reus St., Dorothy’s is in a prime part of downtown Pensacola, right across from the Blue Wahoos Stadium and Pensacola City Hall. Dorothy’s is contributing more energy to the overall downtown area, receiving unwavering support from the local community since its grand opening on Halloween.
As the bar gains more footing, Haupt hopes to open for trivia nights, karaoke, special events and rentals.
Dorothy’s is currently open Sunday through Thursday from 3 pm to midnight and on Friday from 3 pm to 2 am. For more information about Dorothy’s, check out their Facebook @Dorothy’s and Instagram @dorothyspensacola.

Afternearly three weeks at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola during late October’s Hurricane Melissa and the subsequent recovery phase of Naval Station Guantanamo Bay from the storm, non-mission essential personnel temporarily relocated to the air station are returning to Cuba November 12 through 14.
The nearly 900 Naval Station Guantanamo Bay nonmission essential personnel temporarily relocated to NAS Pensacola have been residing in installation accommodations and – as eligible beneficiaries – have been able to use air station resources such as the Jet Port Café; Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) facilities and services; and Navy Inn offerings.
“The dedicated and professional team at NAS Pensacola went above and beyond to ensure that these members of our Navy family were afforded every convenience we could provide,” Capt. Chandra ‘Mamasan’ Newman said. “The support of our air station and tenant command service members, civilian employees and other volunteers has been amazing during our increased operational tempo with our Guantanamo Bay guests, and I couldn’t be prouder of this team during what has been a challenging evolution.”
Newman said the activation of the Emergency Family Assistance Center (EFAC), a temporarily activated
entity in response to an event causing relocation, was critical to the success of the nearly three-week operation. Controlled by NAS Pensacola’s Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC), several installation departments and community mutual aid partnerships such as the Pensacola-area American Red Cross and the United Services Organization (USO) were involved in the ongoing evolution.
“Our FFSC personnel have manned the EFAC since we began this almost three weeks ago,” Newman said. “Their dedication, perseverance and resilience speak volumes of just how engaged and willing NAS Pensacola and our tenant commands are in ensuring we take care of our Navy family.”
Along with NAS Pensacola’s Unaccompanied Housing employees, staff from the Navy Lodge; Navy Inn; the Navy Exchange (NEX); MWR’s Child and Youth Programs; NAS Pensacola Religious Ministries and Public Works and the U.S. Army Pensacola Veterinary Readiness Activity Fort Eisenhower Pensacola Branch were integral parts of the EFAC. Additionally, organizations including the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) and USO, as well as offinstallation organizations such as the American Red Cross, played a pivotal role in ensuring eligible beneficiaries were aware of available resources.
Newman added that the community support for Naval Station Guantanamo Bay non-mission essential personnel was overwhelming, referring to the significant donations of pet supplies, suggested outings and community engagements.
“Being part of a community which has embraced its service members and their families for nearly two centuries is awe-inspiring,” Newman said. “So many community organizations have reached out to provide assistance, to offer the opportunity to attend events, to just let these individuals displaced during a difficult time know that they care. The City of Pensacola and the surrounding communities are so much a part of our Navy, and we appreciate all they do.”
The non-mission essential personnel movement allowed Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to minimize operations during Hurricane Melissa and expedited recovery operations. An estimated 5,500 personnel and families live and work onboard Naval Station Guantanamo Bay.
NAS Pensacola, the only Navy installation in the Gulf with both a deep-water port and active airfield, previously received non-mission essential personnel during 2016’s Hurricane Michael, and also serves as a safe harbor for numerous U.S. Coast Guard and USNS ships during extreme weather situations.
