Why the Eucharist promotes Social Justice JEROME R. SECILLANO, MPA

SOCIAL justice is a ticklish issue. Those who make it their concern are branded as subversives. Those who don’t care are seen as unsympathetic or heartless. Some see it mostly as the problem of the poor and never one that affects the rich and the powerful. Governments deal with it with great caution and uneasiness. The Church makes it a noble advocacy. Admittedly, the term “social justice” can be vague and allusive. But in the context of the Compendium of the Social Doctrines of the Church (CSDC), let us define it broadly as love and service of neighbor, most especially the poor and the suffering. So, how does this definition relate social justice with the Eucharist? St. Thomas Aquinas’ insights are helpful in this regard. He identifies the Eucharist as the sacrament of charity. (Aquinas, Summa Theologiae, III, q. 73, a.3). In his treatment of the theological virtues, Aquinas argues that, “no true virtue is possible without charity.” (Summa Theologiae, II-II, q. 23, a.7.) Thus, justice, including social justice, fails if it is not accompanied by charity— if it is not united to the sacrament of charity. In every act of charity, one loves another person for the sake of God and the grace to do this flow from the Eucharist. One gets a clearer understanding of Aquinas’ reasoning upon recognition of the Eucharist as the offering of the body and blood of Christ for the sake of a broken humanity. Each Eucharistic celebration is always an act of Christ’s charitable self-giving and it is never just a mechanical act but it is a giving out of love. As a celebration of love, there is no class distinction in the Eucharist. In fact, the Eucharist is about inclusivity and it is both a protest and resistance to social exclusion and discrimination. It is about solidarity and sharing, and it offers a dynamic that empowers action and it challenges us to make a difference in a world torn by strife and indifference. In the Eucharist, we begin by begging God for forgiveness. It is a reminder that sin is never merely an individual affair and that we are all complicit in the injustice and the violence that scar our world today and that all of us need to forgive and be forgiven. The Eucharist is essentially about the acknowledgment of oppression and the giving and receiving of forgiveness. All are given the opportunity to lament, to understand the hurts we have caused and to come face to face with the need to be just and morally upright. As a festive meal, the Eucharist also becomes a prophetic protest that challenges global hunger. The prayer we repeat at every Mass, “give us this day our daily bread”, obliges us to do everything possible to end the scandal of hunger and malnutrition afflicting so many people in our world today. Margaret Scott says, “A better world is possible, in which “yesterday’s bread” becomes “bread today” for all. The inseparable link between the Eucharist and social justice has its roots in the Scriptures. For the Old Testament Prophets, it was impossible to render worship to God while ignoring the demands of justice. God also repudiates any worship offered by those who are insensitive to the needs of the poor and the powerless. The book of Sirach says, “The Most High is not pleased with the offerings of the ungodly…Like the man who kills a son before his father’s eyes is the person who offers a sacrifice from the property of the poor”. (Sir. 34:22) In the New Testament, St. James condemns all inequality and discrimination based on status and wealth and reminds the early Christian communities that “religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress”. (James 1:27) In a society that has missed the concepts of equality and justice in the scripture, listening to the readings in the context of the Eucharist can refocus our vision of reality, correct our mistaken perceptions, widen the horizons of our worldview, and attune our way of thinking to Christ’s. The foregoing seems to suggest that the Eucharist is deeply “political” and potentially subversive. It is simply because God in the Eucharist uses both ordinary things such as bread and wine and people as His instruments to challenge the status quo in a world torn by violence and indifference. God is not removed or uninvolved in the affairs of the world but He continues to be at work in them through His creation. The liturgy can never be merely understood as an end in itself. Rather, it is the means by which humans encounter God and are transformed into His instruments, cooperating with God to establish a more just world.

The Jedi in Me THE Jedis of Star Wars are known to be masters of themselves. They have learned the art of fighting by knowing the weaknesses of their enemies as well as their own weaknesses. If Star Wars have Jedis, God wants us too to become Spiritual Jedis. We should be masters of ourselves – by conquering the evil within us and by overcoming our weaknesses. For to know our weaknesses is to win half of our battle against evil spirits. But how could one become a Spiritual Jedi? The answer is THROUGH FASTING. Fasting is one of the pillars of Lent. Sad to say, many have yet to understand and appreciate the essence of fasting. At the surface level, fasting might simply mean “not eating” on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. But there is more to it. The purpose of fasting is to TRAIN OUR WILL to SAY NO to our selfish desire or carnal desire. Jesuits call it AGERE CONTRA – going against our will. It’s a way of taming our carnal desire, which most of the time, greatly influences our thoughts, decisions, and actions. As per experience, many of our decisions and actions motivated by our selfish desires would always bring chaos, hurts, and sins. But when someone learns the art of subduing his flesh or selfish desire, he becomes the master of himself – A SPIRITUAL JEDI. It becomes easier for him to listen and obey the will of God. We need to remind ourselves – when God asks us to do something, that it is not for His benefit and advantage. God needs nothing. It is solely for the benefit of our souls and our happiness. For He loves us much. Today, let us pray that God will give us the grace and strength to be the master of ourselves. As Master Jedi Yoda said, “Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose.”  Guide for Reflection: A. SILENCE… Have a ten 10 to 15 minute silence. Relax. Beg God to give you spiritual freedom from the bondage of evil and his temptations. 4. What are your favourite sins? As a form of fasting, would you like to say NO to your favourite sins? 5. Knowing your weaknesses, what practical suggestions would you like to do to fortify your spiritual defence against temptations?  C. Read Prayerfully Psalm 59 – “Prayer of Deliverance”  D. 4 signs that the global crisis is still here to stay THE world economy is nowhere near recovery from the last economic implosion in 2007-08, even as governments and their economists would want us to believe so. While articles about the lingering crisis are scant, one could read through several news articles and recognize the signs pointing to it. 1. Growth rates in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the centers of global capitalism are still very low. Germany’s GDP growth in 2014 is at a low 1.6 percent, Japan at -0.1 percent, the US at 2.4 percent, the UK at 2.9 percent, and Switzerland at 1.9 percent. Even the so-called emerging economies or the BRICS are already reeling from the crisis with low growth rates: Brazil 0.1 percent, Russia 0.6 percent, and South Africa at 1.5 percent. While both India and China registered GDP growth rates of 7.3 percent in 2014 – China’s growth rate was 9.0 percent in 2011 – its impact on the world economy is not as significant as the centers of capitalism namely, the US and the European Union. 2. Interest rates, the main intervention mechanism being used by governments, and acceptable under neoliberal economics, remain low. US interest rate is at 0.500 %, Japan at 0.000%, Europe at 0.050%, and Switzerland at –0.750% This is a sign that industries are not expanding and are in no need for additional capital, and thus, not taking loans even with very low, zero, or negative interest rates. Governments in the centers of capitalism, which are the main purveyors of neoliberal economics, are engaging in pump priming through infrastructure projects, even if this is not within the neoliberal framework, in a failed attempt to stimulate economic activity. 3. Stock prices in the US, Europe, the Middle East and Asia have lost value year on year. Inflation rates are also low even as monopolies control prices. This means companies have no choice but to lower prices. Germany’s inflation rate is at 0.9%, Japan at 2.7%, US at 1.6%, the UK at 1.5%, and Switzerland at –0.0%. 4. Oil prices, which reached an all time high of $144.78 in June 2008 due to speculation, is currently at a low $29.04 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. http://www.macrotrends.net/1369/crudeoil-price-history-chart Brent North Sea crude for April delivery slumped $1.21 (3.6 percent) to $32.18 a barrel in London. Analysts blame the oversupply of oil for the slump in

prices and there are talks to freeze the output to January 2016 levels. But there appears to be no consensus in sight for oil producers. What is the cause of the oil glut? In the absence of any supply shock, which emanates from the sudden discovery of rich oil reserves that flood the market, there could only be one explanation: the major oil consumers are not using much oil. Oil is still the main source of energy that fuels industries. If production is not at peak levels, the consumption of oil would also be not that much, thus the glut. How does the crisis affect ordinary citizens? Official unemployment figures may be low but the quality of jobs has suffered so much. Part time jobs, odd jobs, contractual work, low wages with scant benefits, if any at all, affect majority of peoples of the world. Poverty, aside from wars, is also causing the refugee crisis affecting Europe. This has caused European governments to once again tighten its borders. Locally, the Aquino government, as well as its predecessors, has been boasting of the supposed higher GDP growth rates of the country. But growth rates are all about incremental increases and not the total value of the economy. The US, Europe, Japan, and even China and India, are way bigger economies than the Philippines. Worse, behind these growth rates are the lowering of the quality of life of majority of Filipinos, widening gap between the rich and the poor, poor quality of jobs, the growing informal economy, and the meager wages that could no longer provide families with living conditions befitting humans. Contractual employment has become so prevalent that a new term has evolved among workers and rank and file employees: “endo” or end of contract after five months. It is most unfortunate that most candidates for president and vice president, as well as for the two houses of Congress, have declared that they would pursue the neoliberal economic program of the Aquino government and its predecessors. These are the very same policies that have caused the crisis and have been perpetuating it. But there is hope. More and more peoples all over the world are engaging in various forms of protests and strikes. It’s time for the peoples’ voices to ring louder.| HTTP://BULATLAT.COM
