UPANG lalo pang mapalaks ang kampanya laban sa pagkalat ng sakit na HIV-AIDS, isang forum ukol dito ang isinagawa ng Batangas City Health Office (CHO) sa Teachers Conference Center bilang pakikisa sa paggunita sa World AIDS Day kamakailan.

Ito ay may temang “Getting to Zero, Think Positive: Rethink HIV na naglalayong mapigil ang pagdami ng bilang ng dumaraming kaso ng sakit na AIDS sa bansa.

Ayon kay Dr. Allen EvangelioSantos, Medical Coordinator ng HIVSTI Prevention Program ng CHO, ang naturang gawain ay bilang paggunita sa alaala ng mga yumao dahil sa naturang sakit at isang oportunidad din aniya upang pagtibayin ang laban hinggil sa naturang lifetime disease.

Sa pamamagitan din aniya nito ay makakapagbahagi sila ng mahahalagang impormasyon hinggil sa mga Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) at Human Immuno-deficiency Virus o HIV at kung paano maiiwasan ito. Kilala bilang Home of the Country’s biggest Cattle Auction Market, ang bayan ng Padre Garcia ay siya ring itinuturing na cattle trading capital of Asia.

Bukod sa mga baka at iba pang hayop na dinadala sa bayang ito, may matagumpay ring programa ang pamahalaang lokal sa pag-aalaga ng mga gatasang baka.

Ayon kay Mayor Abraham Gutierrez, may 25 heifers o gatasang baka ang inaalagaan sa barangay Cawongan na nakakapagprodyus ng may 120 hanggang 130 litro ng gatas araw araw. Bukod sa mga naibebentang sariwang gatas, dito rin aniya sila kumukuha ng ipinaiinom sa mga batang kulang sa timbang.

Ambulansya at 31 breathing apparatus, ipinagkaloob sa BFP “WE’RE just trying to make our people get what is due to them, bilang bahagi ng partnership ng Shell sa kaniyang host community, at ang proyektong ito ay isa lamang sa napakaraming proyektong ating inilalaan sa komunidad.”

Ito ang pahayag ni Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (PSPC) External Relations Manager at Interim Media Relations Officer, Cesar Abaricia, sa turn-over ceremony ng ilang gamit-pangkaligtasan kabilang ang isang community ambulance at 31 units ng self-contained breathing apparatus sa Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) sub-station sa barangay Ambulong sa lunsod Batangas.

Ayon kay Abaricia, ang naturang programa ay isa lamang component o nasa ilalim ng umbrella program ng public private partnership (PPP) sa pagitan ng PSPC, BFP, pamahalaang lunsod ng Batangas, at ng City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC).

“Umaasa kaming higit na mas magiging handa ang komunidad at mas mabilis na makareresponde sa mga biglaang pangangailangan, gamit ang community ambulance at mga breathing apparatus,” dagdag pa ni Abaricia. Aniya pa, hiningi umano din nila ang tulong ng kanilang Singaporean counterpart para sa kaganapan ng proyekto.

Samantala, sa ipinadalang mensahe ni Mayor Eduardo

Dimacuha, sinabi nito na malaki ang pasasalamat niya sa PSPC at Singaporean counterpart nito sa pagkakaloob ng mga kagamitan na maaaring mapakinabangan sa panahon ng kalamidad.

“Sadyang malapit sa iba’t ibang panganib ang Lunsod Batangas tulad ng storm surge, landslide, sunog at maging chemical hazards.

At ang paghahanda sa kalamidad ay hindi trabaho ng isang tao lamang kundi ng mga ahensyang tulad ng Batangas City DRRM Council na maituturing na maramirami na ding nagawa at malaking tulong din ang pribadong sektor tulad ng PSPC,” saad pa ng alkalde.

Lubos naman ang pasasalamat ni Batangas City Fire Marshall FSInsp. Glenn Salazar sa panibagong biayyang kanilang tinanggap mula sa pribadong sector. Ito aniya ay isang kasagutan sa kaniyang 5-Point Agenda na magkaroon ng maayos at sapat na kagamitan para sa dagliang pagresponde sa anumang sakuna.

Ang Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) ay mayroon lamang 26 na tauhan na nahahati sa tatlong fire stations. Sa kabila nito, aptuloy umano ang pagsailalim sa mga pagsasanay ng mga bumbero at support staff nito upang matiyak ang ibayong serbisyo sa publiko.

Matatandaang ang Ambulong Fire Sub-Station ang kaunaunahang himpilan ng pamatay sunog na naipatayo sa ilalim ng

public-private partnership (PPP) sa bansa at mula noon ay walang malaking pinsalang naitala sa area of coverage nito.

Nakatakda namang magbukas sa darating na Enero 2016 ang isa pang BFP sub-station sa Batangas Provincial Sports Complex. Ito’y sa ilalim din ng PPP program katuwang ang First Gen Power Corporation.

Samnatala, ang lupang pagtatayuan naman ay kaloob ng pamahalaang panlalawigan na may sukat na 450 metro kuwadrado.|

Drug testing sa mga government hospitals sa MIMAROPA magpapatuloy, ayon sa DOH TINIYAK ng Department of Health – Mimaropa (DOH-Mimaropa) na magpapatuloy ang kanilang mga ginagawang biglaang drug test sa mga pasilidad nila sa rehiyon.

Ayon kay DOH-Mimaropa Regional Director Eduardo Janairo, nais nilang makasiguro na walang nagdrodroga sa mga ospital o health facility para kaligtasan ng kanilang mga kasama at mga pasyente.

Ginawa ni Director Janairo ang pahayag kasunod ng isang random drug testing sa Ospital ng Palawan sa Puerto Princesa nitong Huwebes.

Ang pagsasagawa ng suprise drug testing ay bahagi ng

Dangerous Drug Abuse Program ng DOH. Nagbabala si Director Janairo na ang paggamit ng ilegal na droga ay maaring magdulot ng pinsala sa katawan, sa pag-iisip at maging sa pamayanan.

Aniya, apektado ng iligal na droga ang may katawan pati ang mga kanyang mga minamahal at mga nakapaligid sa kanya.

Nangunguna ngayon ang damo o marijuana at ang shabu sa mga inaabusong droga sa Pilipinas.

Nagsimula ang biglang drug testing sa Palawan sa unang linggo ng Nobyembre.

Bago sa Ospital ng Palawan, may

224 kawani sa Culion Sanitarium at 436 sa Coron ang sumailalim sa drug test.

Kabilang sa mga sinuri sa Coron ay mga kawani ng Municipal Health Service, ng Waste Management, mga waiter at pati mga bangkero.

Sa unang linggo din ng Nobyembre sinuri ang may 215 health personnel sa Lubang, Occidental Mindoro.

Ito ang pahayag ni Bayan Muna Party-List representative Neri Colmenares sa mga Batangueñong mamamahayag sa isang mini press conference sa bayang ito kamakailan, kaalinsabay ng kaniyang pagsuporta sa Kabakahan Festival 2015 at pagdiriwang ng ika-66 na Foundation Day ng Padre Garcia.

Ayon pa sa mambabatas, matagal na niyang isinusulong ang pagtataas ng buwanang pensyon at iba pang benepisyo ng mga kasapi ng Social Security System (SSS), dangan na nga lamang at hindi gaanong nakakukuha ng suporta sa ibang mga mambabatas. Hinihintay na lamang umano ngayon ang lagda ng Pangulong Aquino para maipatupad ito.

Aniya pa, kung maipatutupad ang pagbabagong ito sa pensyon, inaasahang papalo sa P7,000 ang minimum na pensyon, o maaaring

tumaas pa batay sa bracket ng ahensyang kinabibilangan ng pensyonado.

Samantala, patuloy rin aniyang isinusulong ang reporma sa pamuwisan at maibaba ang income tax ng mga manggagawa. Ito aniya ang pinakamahirap isulong dahil sa ito’y mangangahulugan ng pagpapababa ng kita ng gobyerno, nguinit naniniwala siyang marami ngayon ang susuporta rito.

Kaugnay nito, isinusulong din ni Colmenares na mawala na ang kontraktwalisasyon ng mga manggagawa. Ito aniya ay isang malaking pahirap sa mga manggagawa na inuubos ang lakas at talento sa pagtatrabaho ngunit hindi naman buo ang nakukuhang benepisyo dahils a sila’y mga kontrakwal lamang.

Sa kabilang dako, nagpahayag naman ng suporta si Batangas’ 4th District Congressman sa mga adbokasiya ni Colmenares. Aniya, lagi silang nagsusuportahan sa mga adbokasiya sa Mababang kapulungan at naniniwala siyang dapat mailuklok si Colmenares sa senado upang maipag-patuloy pa ang mas malawak na serbisyo publiko bilang mambabatas.|

‘Doable after all’

 FR. CARMELO O. DIOLA, SSL IN a video interview earlier this year, Archbishop Jose S. Palma of Cebu noted that the 51st International Eucharistic Congress which was thought at first to be “overhwelming” is, in fact, “very doable.” In about two months the Catholic world would be celebrating the much-awaited 51st International Eucharistic Congress in Cebu from Jan. 24 – 31, 2016.

This is a graced-filled, once-in-a-lifetime experience for most of us. As we know, this happens once every four years as Catholics all over the world gather to publicly proclaim the Eucharist as central to their lives. The gathering also rotates among six continents. The probability of the IEC happening again in the Philippines in our lifetime is not high.

In fact, this is only the second time it will be held in the Philippines. The first and only time was in Manila in 1937 when a seven-year old boy named Ricardo Vidal received first communion while a four-year old named Gaudencio Rosales witnessed the event.

This will be held in Asia, the continent where Christianity began; and in Cebu, the cradle of Christianity in the biggest Roman Catholic nation in Asia. It also comes at a time when the Church seems to be returning to its beginnings with all the challenges it faces as a religious body. For Catholics this is a tremendous spiritual boost.

The 51st IEC is an opportunity for delegates and pilgrims to celebrate in Philippine soil and to be reminded of our missionary vocation as a Eucharistic people, particularly in Asia where dialogue with the poor, the youth, and other religions loom large.

The congress is open to non-Catholics as well. In our broken world, the act of breaking bread beautifully witnesses to the power of God to bring healing and wholeness to individual lives, families, groups, and the world. It connects us to one another and to those who hunger for God. *** One of the rooms in the very inspiring St. John Paul II National Shrine in Washington D.C. is dedicated to his view of the Eucharist. The room highlights the words, “The Church has received the Eucharist from Christ her Lord not as one gift – however precious – among so many others, but as the gift par excellence – for it is the gift of Himself…” (Eucharist in the Church, no. 11).

There are other international gatherings of Roman Catholics, like the World Youth Day and the World Meeting of Families. The latter, recently held in Philadelphia, was attended by Pope Francis himself. The former, to be held in Poland will also have Pope Francis present.

While the absence of Pope Francis for the 51st IEC comes as a disappointment to many who had passionately anticipated his presence, the realization that the Eucharist is “gift par excellence” should boost the spirit of delegates and pilgrims. After all, the Petrine Office is at the humble service of this communion.

Next year’s IEC theme, “Christ in You, Our Hope of Glory” (Colossians 1:27) has a special resonance with the host country whose faith remains joyful, resilient, and event defiant despite its share of natural disasters – an earthquake that shattered many places of worship and the strongest storm ever to make landfall.

A most moving image of this power of the Eucharist is Pope Francis’s breaking of bread with survivors of Superstorm Yolanda last January 2015 in Tacloban, Philippines. There, amid very wet, windy, and trying conditions brought about by another tropical storm that was on signal number 2, he came, oblivious to the dangers and inconveniences. Who can forget the Pope covered with yellow raincoat over his liturgical vestments? Who could’ve remained dry-eyed as he spoke words of mercy and compassion? *** The joy awaits.|

What should we fear in the Digong Presidency HE is the only politician in the Philippines who dared to curse the Pope publicly.

Whatever his apologists say about it, Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte indeed cursed the Pope. Millions of people saw and heard him cursing Pope Francis. There is no need to interpret what he said. He did not curse the political administration that failed to manage the traffic, he cursed the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

Digong’s avid fans did not blink even when he cursed the Pope. Rather they defended him as only honest with his opinion. They insisted that he is far better than other politicians who lie, cheat and steal.

They found his vulgarity a manifestation of bravery and firmness.

Many of Digong’s followers believe that stopping crimes requires the bitterest pill termed as Duterte or Digong solution, the way Hitler used extermination as Final Solution to his Jewish problems. A Digong’s follower hinted that if elected to office, Digong will return the death penalty and shall execute at least one criminal per month. In a gathering of his loyal supporters, Digong made no mention about the death penalty—instead, he promised to kill drug pushers, rapists, murderers, and kidnappers by himself. He claimed to have done this in past already. He recalled that he killed a bunch of rapists, poured gasoline on them and set them on fire. He admitted that he killed many. He displayed no remorse in his admission. He implied that he got away with murders and was proud of them.

Digong said that he will be bolder in his resolve to stop crimes if he is elected to office. He will not be stopped in carrying out a final solution to cure the criminal

society he is elected to deal with. No law can deter him.

No appeal to human rights will dissuade him from implementing such a final solution. He will be the law, as he shall be above the law itself. This is the Digong Presidency.

Digong promising a peaceful society bred in fear and submission. He speaks like a messiah that will finally establish a perfect kingdom in the Philippine archipelago.

In his rule, people can expect punishment for their oppressors. He will embody vengeance and justice at the same time.

But more than the fear that his words convey to the public mind is the impunity that his Presidency implies.

His regime is set to put everything in order by any means, and in doing so, it will not bow down to any law or earthly authority. His rule will be characterized by order, security, and peace—primary ingredients for people to enjoy their state of life whether they are rich or poor. While collateral injuries are bound to result from such ordering of the society, Digong and his compatriots cannot be expected to take responsibility for them. They will be busy fulfilling their promise of societal reconstruction. They will have no time to budge in, to reflect, and to render themselves accountable for their acts—and this is the most fearful of all.

The Digong regime will be a dystopia, one that you read only in the novels—Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runners, to say a few. In the six years of his reign, he will try to fix everything in the Philippines especially those things that he believes needed to be fixed. In the end, such dystopic regime will believe in its own greatness. And like in the novels, it will eat up itself and suffer its people until the day of reckoning comes.

Strike 2 for the Visiting Forces Agreement THE refusal of the US government to turn over Pvt. 1st Class Joseph Scott Pemberton to Philippine custody, despite his conviction of homicide in the killing of Jennifer Laude, as well as the servile obedience of the Philippine government, gives the Filipino people another reason for demanding the abrogation of the Visiting Forces Agreement(VFA) and the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the US. The VFA is being cited by the Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Foreign Affairs in justifying their refusal to implement the order of the court to remand Pemberton to the National Bilibid Prisons to serve his sentence.

This is the second time that a US soldier is able to elude justice for committing a heinous crime against Filipino citizens here in our very own country. The first was Lance Cpl. Daniel Smith who was convicted of raping Filipina “Nicole” in 2005 and was spirited out of the Makati City Jail by US and Philippine government officials and detained at the US embassy. Nicole and her family were pressured until Nicole retracted her statement identifying Smith as her attacker. As a result, Smith was acquitted and Nicole was brought to America.

It is not far fetched that the US, with the obeisance of the Philippine government, would employ the same pressure and tactics on the Laude family. The fact that Pemberton was not imprisoned shows that they do not intend to make him serve his 6-12 year sentence.

This is dangerous since the Philippine government, in signing the EDCA, has allowed the permanent presence of more US troops and the establishment of US bases all over the country. The Filipino people would soon suffer the oppression that the South Korean people have been suffering with the presence of US troops.

Citing government statistics, the Civil Network for a Peaceful Korea revealed that “50,082 crimes were committed by US soldiers from 1967 to 1998 (including those by soldiers’ families), and 56,904 US soldiers were involved (including soldiers’ families) in these crimes.”

Also, “the total number of crimes committed by US soldiers since September 8, 1945 (when they were first stationed in Korea) is estimated to be around 100,000.”

According to the same report, “Study by Ministry of Justice of south Korea shows that among the 39,452 cases (45,183 US soldiers involved) of crimes committed

by US soldiers from 1967 to 1987, south Korea was able to exercise its jurisdiction only in 234 cases, punishing only 351 US soldiers. Among them, 84 US soldiers were convicted of rape and 89 US soldiers were convicted of

murder and robbery. Taking into account the fact that rape cases were more common before 1967, and that many rape cases were intentionally hidden and forgotten, the actual number of rape cases committed by US soldiers will be much higher than what official figures suggest.”

The report also mentioned the following appalling cases: “Countless cases of rape were committed by US soldiers, including a woman gang raped by 4 soldiers’ in March 1946, a 14-year-old schoolgirl raped in 1956, a daughter and a mother both raped in 1967, a woman raped by 8 soldiers in the mountains in 1971, a month pregnant teacher raped in 1986 by 5 soldiers in the middle of Team Spirit military exercise, a handicapped schoolgirl sexually harassed in 1996, and a 6-year-old girl sexually harassed in May 1997.”

The fact that the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between the US and South Korean governments – which is much like the US-PH VFA – provides the latter very limited and narrow jurisdiction over crimes committed

by US troops stationed in that country, resulted in impunity in the commission of these crimes.

The same report by the Civil Network for a Peaceful Korea quoted Gregory Henderson, who served at the US embassy in Seoul in the 1950s and 1960s, who wrote: ” … Every US soldier from officer down enjoys material indulgence in Korea. Material indulgence includes abundant supply of fresh bodies of young local women.”

With the VFA and EDCA, and the servility of the Philippine government, it is no longer remote that the same social malady would be inflicted on the Filipino people, courtesy of US troops.

The Japanese people suffered the same. The crimes of US troops in Okinawa came to a head in 1995 when three US soldiers Marcus Gill, Rodrico Harp, and Kendrick Ledet kidnapped and raped a 12-year old Japanese girl. While the crime was committed on September 4, 1995, the US military initially refused to turn over custody of the three soldiers, citing the SOFA between the US and Japanese governments, despite repeated requests by Japanese officials. The three were turned over to Japanese custody only when they had been indicted on September 29.

This sparked massive protests participated in by tens of thousands in Okinawa demanding the removal of US bases. This prompted the Japanese and US governments to sign a 1996 agreement immediately

‘Adventing Life’ IT may just be a matter of time when the word “Christmas’” disappears from our vocabulary and remain as an unused etymological artifact in Wikipedia or some obscure digital bin.

This may sound hard to believe, but some first world countries are investing serious efforts to redefine or erase the word and the very meaning of Christmas. There are cities converting the Christmas season into a casual holiday by the prohibiting carols, crèches, and other decors related to Christ’s birth. They propose a more abstract, generic but (they claim) “politically correct” expression: “Happy Holidays!”

These individuals explain that they are only being sensitive about the sentiments of other religious denominations who may not be celebrating Christmas as a tradition. Behind these secular political correctness maneuvers lies nothing but a subtle but aggressive campaign to strip man –whether Catholics, Muslims, Buddhists or Jews– of his religiosity.

But this is not the greatest threat to Christmas. What is more dangerous is that more and more Christians are forgetting its true meaning by replacing it with materialistic and commercial cravings. The season is now becoming a yearly pretext, camouflaged with philanthropic make-up to quell one’s conscience, to indulge in worldly pleasures to fill one’s bottomless stockings with greed and pride.

And if many Christians are forgetting what Christmas really means it is because they have also forgotten how to genuinely prepare for it with Advent.

There can be no Christmas without Advent, and vice versa. Christmas without Advent would simply be feasting on one’s childish ego instead of receiving the

Child.

Advent, from the Latin word adventus, “can be translated as ‘presence’ or ‘arrival’. (…) It referred to the arrival of a high official and especially of kings or emperors in a province. (…)

Christians adopted this word in order to express their relationship with Jesus Christ. (…) when they used this word, they intended to say: God is here. He has not withdrawn from the world. He has not left us alone.

(Pope Benedict XVI, The Blessing of Christmas)” These considerations of Benedict XVI again remind us what Advent is and what it is for. It is a time of hope, but a hope placed on Someone and the only One who can offer us Salvation: God. If we remove God’s visitation from the picture, then man is left to hope only in his own fragile and twisted nature and in the false glitter of worldly goods that further blind him from his true identity and purpose in life.

Pope Francis reflects that Advent “returns us to the horizon of hope, a hope that does not disappoint because it is founded on the Word of God. A hope that does not disappoint, simply because the Lord never disappoints!

He is faithful!” Moreover he adds, “Let us rediscover the beauty of being together along the way: the Church, with her vocation and mission, and the whole of humanity, the people, the civilizations, the cultures, all together on the paths of time. (Address, 1-XII-2013)” Thus Advent, a journey towards the birth of our Lord in the Manger, reminds us that we are not solitary travelers. God walks with us! This is what unfailingly fills us with hope! Moreover, it encourages us to sincerely strive to prepare ourselves not only for the end of our passage here in life, but also to make the most of the divine companionship that God affords us during the

The Year of Mercy and Philippine society  REV. EUTIQUIO B. BELIZAR, JR., STHD By the road side FOREIGNERS often say Filipinos are friendly and hospitable. Does that mean we are also a merciful people? It seems we are. Invariably Filipinos admit to doing or saying kind things to others out of “awa” or “kalooy” (Tagalog and Waray words for “mercy”, “compasson” or “pity”). We are appalled when children are made to beg on the streets or work for a pittance (although we still tolerate these practices). We applaud the media when they expose sexual or physical abuse of children, maltreatment of women, senior citizens as well as persons with disabilities. No matter how late, we have laws that already protect their rights and welfare. Even the World Bank sang the praises of the Philippine government for its conditional cash transfer program for the poorest of the poor, hailing it as one of the best, if not the best, in the world. In fact, we are so merciful as a people that we easily forget the sins of past presidential dictators, grafters, and plunderers (of course, after a long course of public shaming through the media and public discourse).

“Filipinos have short memories,” say Filipino observers themselves.

Which explains why very few today appreciate the real horrors of Martial Law, with its gruesome human rights violations, forced disappearances, and rigged elections or, more recently, the Jueteng-gate of the Estrada years leading to his conviction and incarceration, the “I’m sorry” riggedpresidential-election controversy or the “moderate-your-greed” scams of the GMA era, the Reproductive-Health-Bill-passage-for-DAP arrangements or the super typhoon Yolanda and Mamasapano debacles of the current administration, among others—they all seem to be mercifully shelved in the public unconscious.

Are these enough evidence to warrant the claim that we are a merciful people?

Then, pray explain explain why: 1. We have an endless array of “bashers” and “nay-sayers” who love to put down not only celebrities and politicians in private and public fora, including the so-called social media, but also ordinary citizens who happen to offend their tastes and political-cultural-personal ideologies or idiosyncrasies?

2. Our election campaigns are, as a rule, not a competition of or dialogue over ideas and platforms but cut-throat wars of vilification versus vilification?

3. Human and animal rights groups who loudly cry foul over mistreatment of criminals or animals but are often short of words over victims of violent robbery, assassination, abortion, and other manifestations of disrespect for human life and property?

4. People who say and do the (morally) right things are often scoffed at or ignored, while people who say and do the (politically) correct things receive awards and citations?

5. Victims of wrongdoing such as “tanim-bala (plant-a-bullet scam)” are detained and traumatized by strict legal procedures while their perpetrators are vigorously defended or go scot-free?

6. Farmers do not have enough food, carpenters have no decent housing, fishermen cannot fish because their government cannot defend them from bullying by foreign ships?

7. Moreover, if we are a truly merciful people why is virtue in our society trampled upon with glee while crime is granted impunity?

8. Moreover to moreover, if we truly value mercy, why do we easily judge and condemn those who make little mistakes, such as mispronouncing words or making ungrammatically correct statements, when we exempt ourselves from accountability for misappropriating public money?

Pope Francis says mercy is no abstract idea but a concrete face “to recognize, contemplate, and serve” and reminds those of us who profess Christ that “mercy is the very foundation of the Church’s life” (Misericordiae Vultus, no. 10). Mercy and justice must embrace but mercy must outlast justice in the end, so we say. But the face to recognize, contemplate, and serve is not only our own but God’s in the poor, the neglected, the marginalized, the lowly of society.

Filipinos have a long way to go in seeing and showing the face of God as mercy. It is small wonder then that we need the Year of Mercy to make us sit up, listen to, and make visible the proclamation: “The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity” (Ex 34:6).||

.................................................................................................... journey. Advent is not only a preparation for Christmas, but a call to embrace our Lord’s constant visitation in the soul’s life journey.

Pope Benedict gives one example of our Lord’s visitation in the form of human sickness. “Illness can present itself in a new light when we see it as a part of Advent. For when we rebel against it, this is not only because it is painful or because it is hard to be still and alone: we rebel against it because there are so many important things we ought to be doing and because illness seems meaningless. But it is not in the least meaningless! In the structure of human life as a whole, it is profoundly meaningful. It can be a moment in our life that belongs to God, a time when we are open to him and thus learn to rediscover our own selves. (Op. cit.)”

Besides illness, there are other forms of “visitations” of Jesus in our soul. There are graces and blessings, material successes and failures, love and betrayals, etc. Literally every aspect of our short earthly sojourn can be an Advent experience. And Pope Francis says that the “journey is never finished. Just as in each of our own lives, there is always a need to restart, to rise again, to recover a sense of the goal of one’s own existence. (Ibid.)”

We can somehow call this rich spiritual outlook “Adventing life”. And by living this spirit will we experience what Benedict XVI says, “The Lord is here. This Christian certainty is meant to help us look at the world with new eyes and to understand the “visitation” as a visit, as one way in which he can come to us and be close to us. (Op. cit.)”|

Educators, firemen, media, plant trees together at the old dumpsite IN an effort to address the worsening effects of Climate Change, the personnel of the Department of Education Division of Batangas City spearheaded the mass tree planting at the Old Dumpsite at barangay Tingga Labac, Batangas City, Nov. 28.

2015 - National Tree Planting Activity, the personnel of the division enjoyed while digging the soil and planting 200 seedlings of acacia and 100 seedlings of cupang from the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (City ENRO).

Cross, the Batangas Press Club, utility workers of selected schools, officials of Barangay Tinga Labac joined the activity completing the list of 89 participants.

NCDA spearheads seminar in handling PWDs in tourism industry CALAMBA City – The National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) is organizing a seminar on “How to Handle Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Tourism Industry” at Lima Park Hotel in Malvar, Batangas on Thursday, December 10, 2015.

According to an invitation sent to Council members signed by NCDA acting Executive Director Carmen R. Zubiaga, the oneday seminar aims to promote the government’s National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) and other equally

important laws and mandates on disability among duty bearers and stakeholders in order to attain the goals on “Accessible Tourism for All.” Representatives from the tourism industry, tour guides, resort operators and transports operators as well as officials of the government who oversee the implementation of the tourism industry, representatives of PWDs people’s organization, and the media are expected to attend the activity.

Seaman Christopher Daniel Browning and Petty Officer Skyler A Dozierwalker were convicted of raping a Japanese woman in October 2012.

Browning was sentenced with imprisonment of 10 years and Dozierwalker nine years.

Immediately after their arrests in 2012, Lt. Gen. Salvatore Angelella, then commander of U.S. forces in Japan, put troops at Okinawa’s Kadena Air Base on a curfew and apologized to the victim. The two US servicemen were immediately turned over to Japanese officials and served their sentence in Japanese jails.

We are worse off as both Smith and Pemberton were

never turned over to Philippine custody even after their conviction. Smith was even able to elude Justice.

With the way the Philippine government has been acting, it appears that we are heading toward the direction of South Korea. The impunity would result in more crimes being committed

by US troops in the country.

BLC’s Underwater Clean Up Drive AMIDST their busy schedules, members of the Batangas Lions Club spared some time cleaning up our seabed fronting Mabini, Batangas, Nov. 28. The project was under the direct supervision of Lion Dr. Michael Francis Perez and 2nd VP Lion Alex Beredo, chairman and co-chairman, respectively.

On that busy weekend, most members braved the waves and

crossed strait to Maricaban Island for a Medical Mission in Tingloy town led
