Presyo ng isda, magmamahal na mula sa susunod na linggo NANGANGAMBA ang mga mamimili na maaaring tumaas ang presyo ng mga isda sa mga pamilihan simula sa mga susunod na buwan bunga ng kakulangan ng suplay ng isda. pagbabangon ng bumaksak na tulay sa JBL Builders and William Uy Construction Joint Ventures sa halagang P64-milyong budget mula sa National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) na nakapaloob sa 2014 General Appropriation Act (GAA). Naibigay ng DPWH ang Notice to Proceed noong Enero at inasahan sanang matatapos sa loob ng pito hanggang walong buwan. WE need to understand very well this matter which is crucial in life. Truth is never just a cold and impersonal piece of information or datum which we describe as the objective fact and reality. This, sadly, is a common phenomenon. Many of us think that just because we have some facts at hand, we can just blurt them out at our convenience and believe we already are being truthful. The drunkards can easily do that, and yet they may not be truthful. Neither is truth just a subjective appreciation of things, dependent solely on one’s opinions, preferences if not biases and other conditionings. And so we hear many of us making statements that are prefaced with, “To me, I think or I believe that…” Let’s remember that we have the tendency to make ourselves as the creator of truth, or at least the standard of what is supposed to be right and fair. We have to be guarded against this tendency, because this distorts reality at its roots. Though we may manage to say some elements of truth with this tendency, a lot more are still needed to qualify ourselves as genuinely truthful. This tendency is not what personalizing the truth means. To personalize the truth means that our understanding of truth should correspond to the basic reality that we are persons. And as persons, we are rational, we have intelligence and will which, we must admit, we have not because we created them ourselves, but rather because they are given to us by a creator who ultimately is God. To personalize the truth therefore means that for us to be in the truth, we need to relate ourselves and whatever pieces of data, information and facts, to God in the first place, and then to others. To personalize the truth involves the dynamics of a living relation with God and with others. Our intelligence and will are given to us to enable us to enter into such relationships. We are meant for loving. Our pursuit of the truth cannot but be done in the context of love, of self-giving, to God and to everybody else. We have to relate ourselves and whatever pieces of data, info, etc., to God first, because as Creator of everything, he is the foundation of reality. Nothing would be real if it is unrelated to God. Thus, we would be taking an unsure and dangerous path if we fail to go to God first. As a saying goes, if we put God in the first place, then everything else would be in the right place. This only echoes what Christ himself said. “Seek first the kingdom of God and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Mt 6,33) And Christ himself, the Son of God who became man, has revealed to us how to be truthful. He explicitly said: “I am the way, the truth and the life…” And the truth he tells us is that we have to love God above all and everybody else as well. In fact, the new commandment he gave us is to love one another as he himself has loved us. And so, to be in the truth and to personalize the truth, we also have to understand that to relate ourselves and whatever we have to God also means to relate ourselves and everything else to others. We have to learn to share ourselves and all we have with others. We cannot and should not keep ourselves and what we have to ourselves alone. Keeping to ourselves would be a dangerous situation, made even more so by the fact that such situation actually poses as an attractive sweet poison, a treacherous silent killer of truth, love and everything else that flows from them. The ideal situation would be that our abiding consciousness is filled with thoughts and desires for God and for others. We have to develop this kind of consciousness in a very deliberate and even aggressive way. That’s because, with our weakened and wounded condition due to sin and its effects, we tend to think only of ourselves, of what is immediately convenient and advantageous to us in the material, worldly and temporal sense. The spiritual and supernatural aspects of life are hardly given any consideration. Or, many times our consciousness is simply empty or, at best, largely passive and reactive, waiting for some outside stimulus. We should always make the effort to consciously relate ourselves to God and to others. This is when we can say we are personalizing the truth.|

Catholic Church sets the example... VATICAN City -- With Nostra Aetate, the Roman Catholic Church has set an example and other religions should likewise open their doors. This was the sentiment of Hindu Swami Chidananda Saraswati, as he praised the spirit of Nostra Aetate, and the leadership, warmth and humility of Pope Francis. Nostra Aetate was promulgated by Pope Paul VI on Oct. 28, 1965, and two weeks ago, Pope Francis held an “interreligious general audience” to mark the anniversary. As the Second Vatican Council’s Declaration on the Church’s relation to Non-Christian religions, the document condemned anti-semitism in all its forms and signified an opening or widening of relations with other religions. Here’s some points Saraswati, founder and trustee of the Fowai Forum, speaks on the landmark document’s impact and how the conference held on it this week at Rome's Gregorian University will have a lasting impact: Saraswati: Hello. I am Swami Chidananda Saraswati. I represent Hinduism. I live in India. Over the last 30 years, I have been a teacher of Hindu scriptures, like Bhagavad Gita, and others. By declaring Nostra Aetate, the Roman Catholic Church has definitely set an example. People, other religions, should also open their doors. And of course, it is well known that much violence

And, oh, if you don’t mind I joke: the other day, I asked some executives in a company, “What exercise do you do daily?” And one responds, “I do one exercise daily: I jump to conclusions.” [smiling] So coming back to what I was saying, I think religion has the power to bring the best out of us, but unfortunately, in a lot of places, religion is bringing out the worst in the human being because of the simple reason that there is a misunderstanding, of the so-called other religions. If we sit together and have dialogue, and we then identify common goals, what we share, what is similar, then half the problem is gone. The other half, also, where we differ. For example, the Semitic religions do not believe in rebirth. The eastern religions -- Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism -- all of us believe in rebirth, reincarnation. At first it appears like a big gulf, but I don’t think that is such a big issue at all. Or for that matter, worshipping images. At first, it appears like an irreconcilable difference. Worshipping images. Blasphemous! One group thinks. Another group thinks that worshipping images is a stepping stone to realize the ultimate truth which is beyond images. The ultimate truth is not an image. So that's just to give two examples. But I am very confident that beginning with finding common ground, then one can begin to find areas of differences also, we will be able to appreciate each other's views. For instance, my colleague here from Jainism who gave the analogy, the world is like a garden. Different flowers may look different, may have different fragrances, but it's wonderful to have a garden of diverse flowers, and we can work together and make this world a wonderful place. Violence should end. I think if we work together we can also work on this terrorist problem too and change their hearts. All they need is a little bit of relocation. I think they are jobless and that is why they are doing all these things. They need to be engaged. They have so much energy. If they are given some respectable, good jobs, I think they will drop the weapons. What do they say, "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." There's that old saying. So many times these terrorists [do this] because of some misinformation, many times they are driven to these things because of poverty too. They are poor and agitated and somebody comes and says, "Come, I teach you," and guns are given to them.|

‘Laglag’ or ‘tanim bala’ scam, blowing up in the face of the Aquino administration SECRETARY Joseph Emilio Abaya of the Department of Transportation and Communications is again at the center of another scandalous issue – after the MRT/LRT breakdowns and mishaps – this time for the laglag or tanim bala scam. The scam involves the planting of bullets in passengers’ bags then extorting money from them to avoid being charged for the supposed offense. Abaya has been complaining that the issue has been ‘blown out of proportion’ and cited statistics that only 1,510, or .004 percent, of the 32.4 million passengers who passed through the country’s four airport terminals were arrested for alleged possession of live bullets. But again, Abaya misses the point. The point is not the number of passengers affected as compared to the total number of passengers who have used the country’s airport terminals. The reason that this issue has been generating so much protests and has been making the headlines in the past seven weeks or so is because of the Aquino government’s attempts to downplay the issue and its apparent inclination to drag its feet in addressing it. All government officials involved including Abaya, Manila International Airport Authority general manager Jose Angel Honrado, the Aviation Security Group (Avsegroup), and Office of Transportation Security administrator Roland Recomono have been denying that the problem exists. Even Liberal Party presidential candidate Mar Roxas, who once headed the Department of Transportation and Communications, contributed to the seeming cover up by claiming that the issue was just highlighted to put the administration, and the ruling party, in a bad light. Malacañang has also been downplaying the issue. It said during the last week of September and again six days ago, that the laglag bala extortion scheme is an isolated incident. Only after his administration received

a lot of flak and an organization of overseas Filipinos Migrante International threatened to launch protests against the government’s inaction, did President Aquino order an investigation. And yet Malacañang has remained deaf to calls to hold accountable and remove Abaya, Honrado, Recomono, and the head of the Avsegroup. The more the Aquino government downplays, nay dismisses, the issue, the more it generates a lot of fire, especially since its denials appear to have emboldened the perpetrators even more as so many cases have been reported in the past few days. Strange are the cases where the supposed passengers admitted to bringing the bullets; one even had a gun to go with it. Why would anyone do so after all the headlines about the scam? Are these meant to muddle the issue? With the Aquino government’s handling, or rather lack of it, of the laglag bala scam, as well as the attacks on and killings of the Lumad, one could not help but wonder if the problem is the Aquino government’s incompetence or an issue of impunity. After all the Philippines has gained infamy for the killings of journalists, environmental defenders and activists. The government has also been known for turning a blind eye and a deaf ear in corruption cases involving President Aquino’s favored Cabinet officials. Is this laglag bala scam, which, at first glance, appears to be the handiwork of a small-time syndicate in the country’s airport, a reflection of the impunity in corruption, as well, under the Aquino government? If it could not or would not run after seeming small time crooks preying on ordinary passengers, how could we ever expect it to run after big time crooks in government? The Devil’s Snot “UGH!!!” Daniel, who was doing his homework on the dining table, cried out as he gave a distasteful look at something smeared on his index finger. “What’s up, Daniel?” his father asked. “Arthur wiped his snot under the table again,” his grossed out face grimaced at his contaminated finger. “Just wash your finger, dude,” Arthur’s mischievous voice suggested. “Arthur Mark Vincent!!!” Their mother’s voice thundered. “Uh-oh! See ya later, guys,” their father left the boys to their maternal fate. “Mom, I…am… Sooorry!” Arthur hid behind Daniel’s chair. “Young man, how many times did I tell you not to do something so uncouth?” “Bu…,” the boy tried to explain. “No BUTs this time. You should learn to be more considerate of the others.” Daniel stood up to wash his finger leaving Arthur defenseless. “It’s just snot, Mom?” “Did you say, just?” She gave him a sterner look. Arthur uselessly tried to disappear between the chair’s wooden slats. “I didn’t…,” he tried explaining. “Do you realize that something as small as snot could cause more trouble than you can imagine?” “No, mom, but I’m reeeally soooorrrry!” Arthur pleaded. “What if it wasn’t your brother who got it? How do you think another person would feel?” “I dunno…,” Arthur shrugged his shoulders and resigned himself to his fate. “Well, tell me, how do you feel if you swiped someone else’s snot?” “I won’t, coz I’m be reeeally super-careful. Like, I would first check under the table.” “Veeery smart young man and totally selfish of you.” “Mom, pleeease!” “I’m sorry, no dessert tonight,” his mom said. “But…,” he tried one more time. “One more BUT and it will cost you your dinner, you hear?” “Yeees, mom,” Arthur condescendingly replied. “Now get some tissue paper and clean off your snot from under the table.”

*** How often have we heard the expressions it is only a little or it is just a bit of vio-lence or sex? Isn’t it true that experience shows how a little of these could later on trigger something big in our imagination, curiosity, and passions? Like Arthur’s snot under the table, the devil also cunningly wipes his own snot in many places. More often than not, these come in small but powerful suggestive ads in TV, magazines, onternet pop-ups, jokes, and funny videos. St. Josemaría wrote about someone who lamented to him, “If only I had broken it off at the start! (The Way, no. 167)” This is a common experience of many who may have underestimated the damage that a little of ‘devil’s snot’ can do. Perhaps, one really had no intention of looking for something immoral or wasting time, but suddenly he gets snagged. Unlike Arthur’s snot, the devil’s snot appears more mysteriously attractive than disgusting.s It has a strange attraction that arouses one’s curiosity and passions. Thus, St. Josemaría would strongly advice: “Never speak of impure things or events, not even to lament them. Remember that such matter is stickier than pitch. (Ibid. no. 131)” If one is not vigilant, he gets caught and only after he has given in is when he starts feeling disgusted about what he has seen, heard or done. How does one avoid getting smeared with the devil’s snot? Here are a few helpful tips: a) Common sense. One of St. Josemaría most proactive tips to overcome ‘snot temptations’ is: ‘to do what you are supposed to be doing and to be in what you’re doing.’ If one has a sense of commitment to one’s duties and responsibilities, he will not give in to whimsically wasting time just reading, chatting, surfing or playing games. This attitude has saved the day for many souls in the spiritual combat. b) Sincerity. But common sense can only go so far as one’s sincerity with himself and about what he is doing. Very often, we are already aware that what we are reading, listening to or doing may already compromise our purity, charity and professional commitments. But we can sometimes give in to excuses and human respect. c) React. So we must also react right away. In The Way, we read, “Change the subject or, if that is not possible, continue with it, speaking of the need and the

PICARDAL, CSSR, STHD Along the Way THE most hotly debated issue at the just-concluded Synod of Bishops is whether to allow those who are divorced and remarried to receive Holy Communion. In the Philippines where divorce is not permitted by law, this may be a non-issue. Yet there are those who have separated from their spouses and are now cohabitating with their new partners. So in way, the issue may also concern them. There are many bishops who want to hold on to the canonical restriction which prohibits communion to the divorced and remarried. The reason given is that they are living in sin—they are committing adultery—and cannot receive communion. It would be a scandal to allow them to do so and completely wrong. Besides being sacrilegious, it would give a message to all that divorce and adultery is now tolerated. Many priests, religious and lay faithful hold on to this canonical restriction which they consider as dogma and would be upset if this is changed. On the other hand, there are those who want to change the law and allow those whose marriages have failed and who have remarried to receive the body of Christ in Holy Eucharist. They believe that God is merciful and the Church should show this mercy to the divorced and remarried. This is appropriate especially during this Holy Year in which mercy is the theme. Allowing them to receive communion is an expression of mercy. Even if they are unworthy they remain recipients of the mercy of God and the Church. This debate has nothing to do with changing any doctrine or dogma. Divorce is still prohibited by the Church and adultery remains a sin. It is about whether a canonical restriction should be lifted or not. I hold that this debate cannot be resolved by framing it in terms of being faithful to the law versus showing mercy. Rather, we have to review the theology of the Eucharist and discover the meaning of receiving Holy Communion. What does it mean to receive Holy Communion and what does prohibition from receiving it signify? From the perspective of the ecclesiology of communion, the Eucharist is the Christian community’s celebration of communion between the community and the Lord who is present, especially in the consecrated bread and wine. It is also the celebration of the communion among the members of the Church which is the body of Christ. The communion celebrated and deepened in the Eucharist has a vertical and horizontal dimension. The Eucharist is therefore a celebration of the unity, friendship and sharing between the community of believers and the Risen Lord and among the believers themselves. The person who receives the body of Christ in Holy Communion celebrates and affirms his/her communion with Christ and with the Church—the body of Christ. At the same time the person draws spiritual nourishment from Christ through the Church—a grace which is gratuitous. The question then is, does sin totally cut off the person’s communion with Christ and His body the Church? Does sin prevent sinners from celebrating communion with Christ and with the Church? Does sin excommunicate the sinner and make the sinner unworthy of receiving the body of Christ? If the answer is yes, then only a few can go to communion—the sinless few, for the ordinary Christian is a sinner—in varying degrees. Even the pope, in an interview, defines himself as a sinner. Eucharistic communion is, therefore, the prize for the perfect or righteous ones. If the answer is: it depends on what sin, then which sin? What about thieves, murderers, the corrupt politicians, or those that destroy the environment—can they receive holy communion? Should they be barred from communion? Or is it only those who have committed adultery—those who are divorced and remarried—are the only ones considered “living in sin” and not allowed to go to communion? The final question is: is it true that the divorced and remarried have totally ruptured their communion with Christ and the Church? Have they been excommunicated or excluded from the Church and separated from Christ that they do not deserve to receive Holy Communion? If yes, then it signifies that they have been excluded from God’s grace and condemned to live the rest of their life separated from God in all eternity. It means that they are excluded from receiving spiritual nourishment from Christ and the Church. They should not even go to Mass at all for going to the Eucharist without partaking of the body of Christ is like going to a banquet without partaking of the food from the table. The Pharisees and religious leaders of his time were scandalized by Jesus who ate with sinners. They called him a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of sinners. In the banquet of the Lord—the symbol of God’s kingdom—Jesus welcomes even those who have been condemned as sinners and considered by the Pharisees as excluded from the Kingdom and from God’s saving grace and mercy. In approaching this issue, one should avoid the mentality of the selfrighteous Pharisees who were obsessed with the strict and rigid observance of smallest precepts of the law and forgot to observe the greater law—of love, mercy and compassion. Jesus had harsh words for them. “Woe to you….”|

Nais din ni Escudero na palawakin pa ng DA ang pagpapakalat ng impormasyon hingil sa mga programa ng PCIC para imulat ang mga magsasaka sa kahalagaan ng pagseseguro ng kanilang pananim. “Dapat makipagtulungan ang DA sa mga local government unit (LGU) hindi lamang para imulat nila ang mga magsasaka sa maitutulong ng PCIC sa kanila, kasama na rin dito ‘yung impormasyon na maaaring sagutin ng LGU ang parte ng insurance premium,” sabi ni Escudero. Sa inisyal na pagsusuri ng DA, umaabot na sa P6.4 bilyon ang nasira ng bagyong Lando na mas napuntirya ang mga taniman ng palay. Just recently, scouting movement in the country, particularly in the city of Batangas, has come to the center stage once again with the representation of Batangueño Scout Jayvy R. Gamboa and winning he title in an international search. Gamboa of Brgy. Alangilan, Batangas City , who has been hailed as among the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts (TOBS) 2014 of the Southern Tagalog Region representing the Batangas City Council has been adjudged as the winner

of the 6th Asia-Pacific Regional Award for Outstanding Scouts - 2015 in an Awarding Ceremony held during the Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Conference held in South Korea over the weekend. Selected from among the ranks of the previous winners of the annual Search for the Ten Outstanding Boy Scouts of the Philippines from 2012 to 2014 to represent the Boy Scouts of the Philippines in the prestigious search, Scout Gamboa flew to South Korea, bring with him the name and pride not just of fellow Batangueño scouts, but of all the Filipino youth. Earlier this week, Scout Gamboa has been elected as a Member of the Young Adult Member Group (YAMG) of the Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Committee for 2015-2018 during the 8th AsiaPacific Regional Scout Youth Forum. He was also selected as a Member of the APR Financial Resources Sub-Committee. “This development only proves that our efforts in molding our scouts truly make Batangas City Council a premier council in the country,” City Scout Executive Ramil Borbon said.. “It would make us more proud of

our scouts and will inspire us more to deliver the services necessary to keep our council at the forefront of scouting movement in the country,” he added. Meanwhile, former city administrator and BSP-Batangas City Council Vice Chairman Felipe M. Baroja said that the success of the Batangueño scouts is a clear indication that the scouting movement in the city is not just a matter of compliance for our youth in schools, or just a plain co-curricular activities, but a worthwhile avenue in developing new leaders and upright citizens.
