As the nation picks itself up and celebrates a solemn Independence Day this month, please enjoy this month’s Bali & Beyond. First we take you to the villages of Belega and Bona, where bamboo furniture and crafts is the game.
This is an important month for the nation, as it commemorates it’s Independence Day on August 17. Yet the preceding month saw a sad day for Indonesia, when on Friday, July 17, 2009 bombs ripped through two big Jakarta hotels. A sad day for Indonesia after a lull of 4 years of peace since the last tragedies. For the tourism scene, this threatens Indonesian tourism in general, and as this goes to press one prediction is that cancellations to Indonesia and diversions to other destinations will be up from 5% to 10%. It was also predicted that a recovery would take around six months. The government then decided that it would propose a budget of Rp 94 billion for Indonesia’s tourism recovery efforts. The Bali Hotels Association also announced that security in Bali would 6

ndonesians remember him as Bung Karno or Pak Karno. Like many Javanese people, he had only one name. Sukarno was the son of a Javanese primary school teacher, an aristocrat named Raden
Soekemi Sosrodihardjo and his Balinese wife Ida Ayu Nyoman Rai from the Buleleng regency, and was born Kusno Sosrodihardjo in Blitar, East Java on June 6, 1901. He died in Jakarta on June 21, 1970 at the age of 69. Much of his life story can be found at the Ndalem Gebang, the home of Bung Karno’s parents.

ROYAL REGATTA The Royal Bali Yacht Club Regatta will be held from August 8-9, with races starting at 10 am. COOK, COOKIE, CLASS Fonterra Brands Indonesia brought Jean Francois Arnaud and Bruno Casassus in to give a “lesson” via a pastry master class on July 17 at The Patra Hotel. They talked about pastry trends, demonstrating and displaying some pastry recipes. Chefs as well as F&B hotel and restaurant staff in Bali attended this class. Jean Francois Arnaud is an expert pastry consultant with Hospitality and Tourism Consulting (HTC) in Asia and conducts pastry classes under the French Culinary School in Asia (FCSIA).

THIRD TRIUMPHS Over 326 athletes from 26 countries swam, cycled and ran in Bali on June 28 in the 3rd MRA Bali International Triathlon. Professional Australian triathlete Luke McKenzie returned to take the win, covering the 1.5 km swim, 750 meter beach run, 40 km bike ride through the hills of the Ungasan peninsula, and a 10 km run though the village of Jimbaran in only 2:10:15. In the individual triathlete division, second to Luke’s first was claimed by Swede Fredrick Nus Cruneberg who clocked a time of 2:13:57, followed by Australian Kyle James Gear with a time of 2:23:15 in third place. The top Indonesian time was turned in by Kadri Regar who placed 8th with a time of 2:29:31. The top performance turned in by a female triathlete was 2:36.39, recorded by Australian Michele Ann Gailey who placed 14th overall. Winning a special cash prize presented by the Bali Hotel Association, the best 3-member team was from the Kartika Plaza Hotel, who completed the entire race in 2:28:43 followed in second-place by the Bali Trail Blazers Team at 2:26:43.
