There’s nothing quite like time on Bald Head Island to foster new perspectives.
Stepping back reveals the grand picture, while a closer look exposes the beauty hidden in plain sight.

In a looping script, Bald Head Creek signs its name across the lush expanse of marsh.

A snowy egret, its bright white plumage and golden slippers on full display, levitates above the shallows.

Majestic as ever, the point of Cape Fear stretches far into the Atlantic in this bird’s eye view.

Hi, we’re Nathaniel and Amanda!

Our family’s love affair with Bald Head Island began in 2021, a year that transformed our lives and eventually led us to call this piece of paradise our home. Transitioning from the fast-paced life of Northern Virginia/DC, where we operated a successful retail business for over a decade, was a dream come true. Moving to the serene 18mph lifestyle of BHI marked the beginning of a new chapter.

In 2024 we purchased BHI Delivery and are excited to introduce new offerings that enhance all levels of service. Our goal is to provide every visitor with a smooth, stress-free experience that is elevated by the personal touches and attention to detail that only a family-owned business can provide. Be sure to wave if you spot our coral transport carts around the island!

No bridge links Bald Head Island to the mainland, so you’ll take a passenger ferry to get here. Cars take a back seat to golf carts, bikes or your own two feet. You’ll have plenty of time to take in the scenery, as the island’s speed limit is a mere 18 mph. There’s something nostalgic about the slower pace, not to mention the history waiting to be discovered. Check out these favorite landmarks and tours.

WE GO

BALD IS BEAUTIFUL

No trip to the island is complete without climbing Old Baldy Lighthouse for a breathtaking 360-degree aerial view. Commissioned by Thomas Jefferson, North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse stands tall after 200-plus years, thanks to the preservation efforts of the Old Baldy Foundation. Admission to climb the lighthouse includes entry to the Smith Island Museum of History, where you’ll find artifacts illuminating the duties of a lightkeeper. If you have more time, sign up for an in-depth guided historic tour of the island, which includes a visit to Fort Holmes, a Confederate earthworks fort reinforced with palmetto and oak logs.

SPIRITS IN THE NIGHT

Summer evenings, follow The Wisp’s Ghost Walk storytellers down moss-draped paths as they conjure 400 years of island lore. On this tour for all ages, you’ll hear tales of Theodosia (the lovely ill-fated daughter

Bikes are the best way to cover ground here while soaking up the surroundings. Coastal Urge or Riverside Outdoor Recreation can rent you one by the day or by the week.

THE GOOD OLD DAYS

For the ultimate throwback, put down your phone, put on your sneaks, and celebrate the company of friends in an old-school way.

IT'S NATURAL

If you’re looking for an introduction to the island’s different ecosystems, the Bald Head Island Conservancy offers a Nature Exploration Tour that embarks from the “Hatchling Hut” located near the island ferry landing. During the twohour program, you’ll search for wildlife among the maritime forest, salt marsh and beaches. At the Conservancy's campus, you'll visit their education center and have a chance to bring back a souvenir from Turtle Central gift shop.

RUN FOR IT

Relatively flat, car-free paved wynds make Bald Head perfect for joggers. At low tide the island’s beaches also present ample running room with a water view. If you want to come out for a good cause, sign up for a summer Turtle Trot with the Conservancy or the annual Run for the Light race hosted by the Old Baldy Foundation.

HAPPY TRAILS

Along Federal Road several trailheads enter the Bald Head Woods Preserve, a nearly 200-acre area of protected maritime forest. Just past the intersection of Federal Road and Edward Teach Wynd, the M. Kent Mitchell Nature Trail rewards hikers with creek panoramas and sightings of fiddler crabs and wading birds at low tide. The expanded Wildlife Overlook on Stede Bonnet Wynd offers viewing platforms over a freshwater lagoon that turtles and gators frequent.

SUNSET CINEMA

For a memorable evening that harkens back to yesteryear, position your golf cart on higher ground along South Beach at your own drive-in theater and wait for the sun to drop into the water (popcorn optional, but highly recommended). Turn your cart lights off to preserve your battery and not confuse any turtles. Stick around for epic star gazing as the sky grows dark and the island’s minimal light pollution allows the Milky Way to shine in all its glory.

FAMILY GAME NIGHT

What’s more fun than bonding over a little friendly competition? Whether your game is Texas Hold ‘Em, Scrabble or Twister, there’s a good time to be had staying in. Take the show on the road at The Wisp’s ever-popular Trivia Night or Music Bingo Night. Bald Head Bottle hosts its own family-friendly Bingo Nights as well. The rivalries can get heated, but don’t fear—you’ll cool down quickly with a cold beer, glass of wine, or cocktail while you play.

SEAS THE MOMENT

Bald Head Island is known for its traditional seaside pastimes, and with good reason. Fourteen miles of white sand wrap the island’s perimeter, and the day starts and ends with the sun rising and setting over the water. Bordering the island to the north, Bald Head Creek’s 10,000 protected acres beckon paddlers and fisherfolk alike.

SHORE BETS

Each of the island’s beaches has its own vibe. West Beach waves near Harbour Village tend to be smaller, making it a popular beach for families with little kids. South Beach’s long stretch makes for great strolling and shelling, while East Beach’s swells summon surfers. It all comes together at the dramatic Cape Fear Point, where East Beach and South Beach converge and fish congregate. Be mindful of not walking out too far on the cape’s sandbars, as the tide comes in fast and the current can be strong.

BOARD SILLY

Don’t bother to lug a surfboard to the island—rent one from Coastal Urge or Riverside Outdoor Recreation in advance online or on the fly at beach access 42. Both companies also offer lessons if you want to brush up on your skills. Coastal Urge can also connect you with a rental skimboard or bodyboard if you didn’t bring your own. Sign up for a standup paddleboard (SUP) excursion with Coastal Urge for a novel way to discover the island’s waters or simply rent a SUP to head out on your own. Riverside Outdoor Recreation offers two-hour self-guided SUP tours, too.

FISH TALES

Surf fishing doesn’t get much better than Cape Fear Point, where game fish are abundant. You can cast right from the beach if you have a N.C. Saltwater Fishing License (available online and required if you’re 16 or older). All the gear you need can be purchased at the Dockmaster, BHI Hardware & General or Stoked Provisions. When you’re ready to catch the big one, local guides, including the island-based outdoor outfitter Stoked Provisions, can take you inshore fishing for drum, trout, bluefish, mackerel, flounder and tarpon or offshore in search of mahi, tuna, sailfish, grouper and wahoo. The Conservancy also offers Kids Crabbing and Fishing programs for ages five-12 that meet at the public creek access along Federal Road, along with a Kids Night Surf Fishing program for children 10 and up who have some fishing experience.

TURTLEY AWESOME

On Bald Head Island, we share the shore with loggerhead turtles, a threatened species monitored and protected for 40-plus years by the Conservancy. Nesting season typically runs May through July, while hatching season runs July through November. Conservancy members can join Beach Patrol Ride Alongs and Turtle Walks for a chance to witness a loggerhead mother lay her eggs or hatchlings emerge from a “boiling” nest.

Do your part to protect sea turtles! Use a red film over your flashlight if you’re walking along the shore at night, turn your porch lights off if you’re in a home along the beach, and fill in any holes you dig in the sand during the day, as they create obstacles for nesting mothers and hatchlings.

TIDAL TRIPS

There’s no better way to explore the island’s creeks than by kayak. Keep an eye on the tide, which can vary by three or four feet from high to low, and plan accordingly. A higher tide will allow you to paddle deeper into the creek’s twists and turns, while a lower tide may reveal more waterbirds feeding along the exposed marsh. No matter the time of day, you’re likely to see egrets and herons, and if you’re lucky, a bottlenose dolphin or diamondback terrapin. The Conservancy offers guided kayak tours with naturalists if you’re seeking an in-depth view of wildlife. Coastal Urge and Riverside Outdoor Recreation offer kayak rentals and guided kayak tours as well.

HAVE A BALL

The Bald Head Island Club and Shoals Club are your springboards for classic recreational pursuits. If you’re renting a home, reserve a guest membership in both clubs and you’ll be good to go.

THE HOLE STORY

A lauded 18-hole golf course, rated one of the top 100 resort courses in America, is the Bald Head Island Club’s crown jewel. Some holes lead you through the maritime forest, while others parallel the Atlantic Ocean. Clinics are offered by PGA professionals, and the Golf Shop rents clubs and shoes if you don’t feel like bringing yours.

The BHI Club gives discounted rates for accompanied junior golfers, so why not make your round a family affair?

AWESOME AQUATICS

At BHI Club’s incredible aquatics center, it’s the norm to see three generations enjoying time in the sun together. Little kids love the splashpad, slide tower and seaside playground, while bigger kids and adults cool off at the zero-entry leisure pool and waterslides. An adults-only lap pool and poolside cabana bar round out the options.

BHI Club’s sister venue, the Shoals Club, presents its own lively mix of water-based diversions, with a spacious swimming pool, zero-entry kiddie pool, and lineup of pool parties during the warmer months. Direct beach access to the cape, with chairs and umbrellas provided by the Shoals Club’s rec staff, makes spending a day by the shore a breeze.

COURT CASES

Whether tennis or pickleball is your game, court sports are alive and well at the BHI Club, where lessons, round robins and clinics take place year-round in view of the ocean. During the summer, stop by the Racquet Shop for Nike attire and footwear, tennis balls for purchase, racquet stringing services, and ball machine rental.

Always known for its world-class croquet courts (aka greenswards), the BHI Club also claims two of the world’s top players, Jeff and Eileen Soo, as director/ instructors. Modern croquet combines the angles and precision of billiards with the strategy of chess. While the game offers endless challenges for experienced players, beginners can have a blast after just a few minutes of instruction. Clinics, lessons, open play, and monthly competitions called “scramblers” occur year-round.

TOO FIT TO QUIT

Both the Shoals Club and the BHI Club offer fitness rooms with all the cardio and strength training equipment you’ll need to meet your goals. Along with private sessions, the BHI Club’s personal trainers offer stretching classes, water aerobics, and for the more hardcore—boot camp. Morning yoga sessions on the Shoals Club presentation deck or beach during the summer months are popular, too.

KIDDING AROUND

During the summer season, both clubs offer activities that make you wish you were a kid again. From pool parties to movie nights to holiday crafts, the BHI Club keeps the good times rolling year round. Past themes of their half-day summer camps include superheroes, Christmas in July, creative discovery and more. Seasonally, the Shoals Club’s rec team leads sandcastle contests, t-shirt tie-dyeing, and craft projects to keep kids busy for hours.

ADVENTURE AWAITS

Looking to level up your island time?

Check out these novel excursions that lead you off the beaten path, face-to-face with slithery things, into the night, or through uncharted waters.

EYES ON THE SKIES

Link up with a Conservancy Birding Tour to see how many of the island’s 200 resident and migratory species you can find or join a Middle Island Exploration Tour and visit the Ibis Pond, a private sanctuary where birds congregate. If you’re birdwatching on your own, keep an eye out for ospreys soaring above the golf course, herons wading along the marsh edge, painted buntings flitting in the brush beside Federal Road, and bald eagles perched high atop the tree canopy.

EVENING EXPEDITIONS

Guided Sunset Kayaking tours led by the Conservancy provide a magical perspective of the island’s creeks as the sun goes down. These moderately difficult trips are affected by winds and tides, making them suitable for ages 14 and up (children 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult). For an option where you don’t have to paddle, Stoked Provisions offers private Sunset Cruises around the island. Make it a romantic evening for two or invite the whole gang to join you.

JET SETTING

Your backwater adventure with Stoked Provisions starts when you take a private boat ride for up to six people from Bald Head Island to Southport. There, you’ll board jet skis and explore the Intracoastal Waterway and Lockwood Folly River on your way to Holden Beach and back. Finish up with free time to explore Southport’s quaint shopping and waterfront restaurants before returning to the island by boat.

DARK ARTS

If you love creepy-crawly things, the Conservancy has your number. Sign up for a Reptile Round-Up for a chance to meet and handle turtles, lizards and snakes. Another Conservancy program, Hands-On Dissection, brings out the budding scientist in kids as they dissect specimens such as squids or spiny dogfish sharks. The Bald Head After Dark Tour introduces the nocturnal creatures of the island, including frogs, bats, alligators and deer, on a flashlight-led walk.

DEEP DIVES

Looking to dive the legendary Frying Pan Tower, spearfish, or even hunt for megalodon teeth? Check out Stoked Provisions’ adventurous scuba charters for certified divers. Pop by their shop along Merchants Row to learn more and to see a giant fossilized tooth from a megalodon, an extinct shark from the Cenozoic Period three times the size of a great white!

ISLAND SPEAK

Locals refer to the island’s relaxed pace as “Turtle Time.” Bald Head’s roads are called “wynds,” which rhymes with blinds. “Crofters” are small cottages with golf cart storage on the ground floor and a living/sleeping area on the second floor. Think garage apartment, but with an island spin.

Meet the Neighbors

You know the ones. Those neighbors who make you smile every time you see them, and those you rarely see at all. Some neighbors are super friendly, while others are pleasant enough, but generally keep their distance. You’ve probably encountered nosy neighbors and grumpy ones and even some who wander into your space as if they own it.

You might be surprised to learn that this universal human experience has its counterpart among the wildlife on Bald Head Island. Let us introduce you to some of our favorite colorful characters: the nonhuman mammals, as well as the reptiles, amphibians, marine life and birds that call Bald Head Island home.

When Larry Met Sally

Larry, one of two resident corn snakes at the Bald Head Island Conservancy’s Fleming Environmental Center, eagerly poked his head out of his rocky cave to greet Sally Milam, a curious 7-year-old visiting from Oxford, Mississippi. Meanwhile Ricky, Larry’s next-tank neighbor, was in a much less social mood, preferring to stay curled up behind some makeshift shrubbery and ignore the passersby.

Undeterred, Sally and her brother Kirk, 4, continued around the room, making the acquaintances of yellow-bellied sliders Thor and Hulk, Sheila the musk turtle, box turtles Brownie Bite and his elderly aquarium-mate Gloria, as well as the prickly sea urchins and sedate sea stars who inhabit the sprawling touch tank.

“It’s hard to believe sea urchins are alive,” marveled Sally, gingerly reaching into the tank to feel their spines. “They’re really cool, but they look like spiky, wet tennis balls!”

“Most of the animals tend to stay in their own little world.”

Things Are the Where

Bald Head Island’s uncommonly diverse ecosystem offers its human and nonhuman residents a choice of living environments: ocean beach, dunes, salt marsh and the maritime forest.

“Most of the animals tend to stay in their own little world,” said Chris Shank, executive director of the Bald Head Island Conservancy, “but they do occasionally meander.”

Egrets, for example, forage in the marsh but roost in the forest. Sea turtles live in the ocean, but also spend time in the tidal creeks. After all, there is no concept of private property in the wild.

People, however, need to be respectful of boundaries when it comes to interactions. In other words, while it’s nice to get close to your human neighbors, it’s best to keep a respectful distance from the wild ones.

“Please do not approach, feed or harass the animals,” emphasized Shank, warning that they can become desensitized to humans, or even become aggressive if they perceive a threat.

Hatchlings Super Moms

In this barrier island community, most popular honors surely go to the iconic sea turtles, the unofficial mascots of Bald Head Island who come ashore from May through August. Nearly a homogeneous lot, 99 percent are loggerheads, with an occasional green turtle or a rare Kemp’s Ridley in the mix.

The Bald Head Island Conservancy staff gets to know these seasonal neighbors by name or number through a monitoring program administered by the Sea Turtle Protection Team, explained Shank. “When a mother sea turtle comes ashore, scientists apply a monitoring tag to her flipper and a passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag in her shoulder,” he said.

“The PIT tag, which is similar to the chips people put into their dogs and cats, is then scanned each time she returns to nest.”

These tags have allowed the staff to identify which turtles have repeatedly nested on Bald Head Island beaches over the past 40 years.

“Sea turtles are more regional creatures than beach specific,” said Paul Hillbrand, the Conservancy’s sea turtle biologist. Some only nest on Bald Head, some throughout the Cape Fear region, and some nest in multiple places along the North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia coasts.

The number of sea turtle nests also varies year to year, with 72 nests in 2024 being slightly below average. The previous few years were above average, however, with a record of 170 nests in 2019.

Humans who want to have a relationship of sorts with the sea turtles can do so through the Conservancy’s Adopta-Turtle program. Adoption options include hatchlings, moms and nests, as well as the grander Adopt-a-Legacy program. Legacy turtles are those who have nested on Bald Head Island for at least three seasons, not necessarily in consecutive years. Donors at that level are given the opportunity to name a mother turtle, be notified of her whereabouts, and receive special invitations to attend her nest excavations.

“There are a few turtles that have been nesting on Bald Head Island for more than 25 years,” said Shank, adding that very productive turtles can lay multiple nests—up to six—during a single season. First-time mother sea turtles are usually 20-30 years old, he said, and some of the legacy turtles are 50-60 years old.

“Scarlett is our superstar mom,” said Hillbrand. First identified on Bald Head Island in 2010, Scarlett laid three nests that produced 212 hatchlings. Across seven seasons between 2010 and 2024, she went on to lay 29 more nests, producing 2,350 hatchlings.

Other prolific legacy turtles include Claire, Billie, Emily and Caretta, a play on the loggerhead’s scientific name Caretta caretta. Most original name honors go to The Lovely Mrs. Bites, her moniker a tribute to Mike’s Bites, the popular eatery next door to the Conservancy.

Friends Fluffy, Stumpy

After the sea turtles, alligators are perhaps the most fascinating of island residents. As the largest, Fluffy, a 12.5foot, 450-pound male, is the most well known and perhaps most respected. As in, given an extra-wide berth.

“In 2022, we were involved in a program with North Carolina State University where we caught several gators and subdued them so we could get blood samples and monitor the toxins in their bloodstream,” said Shank. “We caught Fluffy and attached a satellite tag so we could track him, interested to see where he went. He was very active moving among the lagoons on the golf course, but he never left Bald Head Island.”

After all, as the alpha male, he has no reason to roam far.

“Alligators are territorial and not very nice to each other,” explained Shank. “They tend to get into tussles and the big ones will eat the little ones, which is why you might see some small and medium-sized ones in unusual places, especially in the spring. They are on the move, looking to relocate to a safer place to escape the larger ones.”

Likely due to this bullyish behavior, two alligators on the island have been known as Stumpy, so named because they were missing a limb.

“The original Stumpy is about 10 feet long and lives in the lagoon between holes one and nine on the golf course,” said Beth Darrow, PhD, director of science for the Conservancy. “He is missing his front right foot and part of his left rear foot. He doesn’t move around a lot because it’s difficult for him to walk far on land.”

Sadly, Stumpy II, who usually frequented the Wildlife Overlook along Stede Bonnet Wynd, passed away in September 2024.

One other named gator is a large female who hangs out near hole 15. “We call her Mama, because we suspect she is the mother of the babies in that lagoon,” said Darrow.

“Alligators are prehistoric-looking and evoke wonder,” said Shank. “They add spice and intensity to our wildlife, so curiosity is natural.” However, he cautioned that getting close to them or interacting with them in any way is not only dangerous to humans and small pets, it is also hazardous for the alligators.

Shank relayed the sad demise of a mature, nine-foot alligator due to lead poisoning, inadvertently caused by humans. “People were fishing in a lagoon, which is not allowed,” he emphasized, “and a gator who lived there swallowed a bunch of fishing rigs, such as sinkers and weights. His gut was full of lead.”

Oh, Deer!

Popular and plentiful, deer are another species that are out and about throughout the island. Like people, two of their favorite places to hang out are at the grocery store and on the golf course.

“Deer have distinctive personalities,” said Shank. “Most are pretty elusive, but two of the friendliest are #100 and #98.”

Shank explained that deer with numbered tags on their ears have received contraceptive drugs in the past. The program was stopped several years ago because the deer population had stabilized. Currently, about 170 deer live on Bald Head Island and experts have determined that up to 200 can live here with minimal environmental impact.

Social creatures by nature, deer often pair up or travel in herds. “We are fairly certain #98 is the offspring of #100,” said Shank, explaining that they are not necessarily tagged in consecutive order. “Those two hang out together a lot and are not the least bit fazed by humans.”

“And they often greet us on Federal Road as we are headed into work,” added Darrow.

Another recognizable deer is 46/47, who tends to be seen in the woods behind Bayberry Court with his or her tongue hanging out, said Darrow, adding “and if anyone sees shy and elusive 7/8, who might be on the north side or on Middle Island, I’d love to know.”

More Featured Creatures

From South Beach to the tidal creeks, and from East Beach to Harbour Village, Bald Head Island is teeming with other equally interesting animals, including coyotes, foxes, rodents and ghost crabs. According to Shank, the diamondback terrapin, the smallest saltwater turtle, is an especially noteworthy resident.

“Seeing one is a treat because its shell is exceptionally beautiful,” he said.

Smart, adaptive and not so rare, coyotes exist just about everywhere in North Carolina, said Shank, including Bald Head Island. “Although they are seldom a threat to humans, they definitely can be a threat to pets,” he cautioned. “It’s important to keep dogs on a leash just in case.”

The birds of Bald Head Island, too, are a significant part of the community. “We don’t get to know them individually, but there are a lot of different species,” said Shank. He listed many types of gulls, oyster catchers, plovers, sanderlings and terns, as well as large wading birds, such as herons, ibises and egrets.

“We even had some spoonbills a few years ago,” he recalled. “They were probably visiting from Florida since we don’t typically see them in North Carolina.”

There’s also a pair of lovebirds in the neighborhood. A couple of ospreys have nested on the golf course over several years, and while the Conservancy has not been able to get a count of their offspring, Darrow quipped, “They are very productive!”

However, the aviary showstopper, according to Shank, is the male painted bunting. “That’s the one that birders are most interested in seeing,” he said. “Their colors are stunning and their song sounds like R2-D2.” Like many of the island’s human residents, painted buntings come in the spring and stay throughout the summer.

Seasonal visitors themselves, Sally and Kirk wrapped up their Conservancy visit with plans to stop by the Fleming Environmental Center next summer and say hello to their new friends.

“I liked all of them a lot, but I don’t think I’d want to be permanent neighbors with the snakes,” said Sally, who then quickly pivoted. “On second thought, they might keep rats away which would be good because my mom absolutely hates rats.”

And with that, she and Kirk were off to see what other critters they might encounter on the island before heading back home.

“I love them as much as anyone, but I also love bold colors and fun patterns and animal prints,” she laughed, looking around at the pops of color and vibrant art throughout Chic Shellter, her cleverly named Bald Head Island home. “For this house, I wanted something different. Something that’s a bit more me. I collect art and rugs and strange little things that I just love, and I brought them all here—to this place I love.”

Photos by Andrew Sherman

The primary suite is a serene layering of dreamy colors and textures, and a study in the impact of symmetry. The lavender, peach and green echo the upstairs, but here the colors are muted, creating a peaceful retreat.

Hooper was thrilled to find sea glass green cabinets in the kitchen, along with glass subway tile. It’s a fresh departure from the classic white kitchen, and green is a personal favorite color. She added the orange area rug to tie into the adjacent dining and living rooms.

Hooper and her brothers in 1984.
(L-R): Fred, Joe, Hooper and Jim.
All grown up in 2024.

A Wilmington native, Hooper doesn’t remember a time when Bald Head Island was not a significant part of her life. Her parents and grandparents owned houses on the island at various times since she was five years old, and Hooper, her three brothers, and any number of friends and family members, would come and go throughout the summer months.

“It was relatively primitive back then,” she recalled. “There were no phones, so we used CB radios. No television, so we rode bikes and went crabbing and built stick forts in the woods. There was a woman we called the turtle lady who would patrol the beaches and when it looked like a nest was going to boil, she would come knock on the doors and we would go out on the beach in our pajamas to help shepherd the baby turtles to the ocean. It was magical.”

During the relatively few years when the family didn’t own an island home, they still rented for several weeks a year, choosing to spend vacations in the place that feels most like home to all of them.

‘‘
It wasprimitiverelatively back then.

Small space—big impact. Hooper’s choice of wallpaper transformed the upstairs powder room into a tropical oasis. She dressed it up further with a handsome gold framed mirror.

Outside, neutral shake siding and crisp white trim convey “classic beach house,” belying the vibrant color palette found in the home’s interior. Along with golf carts, the ground level garage stores enough surfboards, beach chairs and bicycles for the whole family to enjoy.

“My little brother always says the saddest part of his childhood was getting back on the ferry to leave the island,” she laughed.

When their children were in elementary school, Hooper and her husband Read bought one of the Bald Head Island Villas. “We had it for about six years and absolutely loved it, but with three growing children and two dogs, we eventually found we needed something larger,” she explained.

The couple next bought a homesite in Cape Fear Station intending to build there, but soon pivoted to looking for a move-in-ready home they could enjoy right away since their daughter was in college and their twin sons would soon be, as well.

In April of 2024, they found exactly what they wanted at 9 Spikerush Court.

“The house has really good bones,” she said. “It checked all the boxes, and the crisp white walls provided a blank canvas for adding my family’s personality. I really only wallpapered the powder room and changed the light fixtures.”

Well, not quite.

‘‘ The house has really good bones – it checked all the boxes.

The seashell coral in the Moroccan rug kicked off the color palette for the house and inspired the play on words for the name Chic Shellter. It’s also a nod to the many hours Hooper spent shelling with her grandmother, Mimi. Additional pops of pink, purple, orange and aqua infuse the living room with an air of fun and frivolity.

The house was sold furnished, and Hooper soon moved into professional mode, serving as her own client. She kept some pieces in the same place, relocated others and brought in new items from her interior design studio.

“I was able to add all those unique touches that really make it ours,” she said.

In addition to working with individual clients nationwide, Hooper is the exclusive designer for Whitney Blair Custom homes on Bald Head Island. “That I get to live and work on this island is a dream come true,” she continued. “I feel so incredibly lucky.”

Hooper insists that her abiding love for the island has not wavered through the decades, despite the additional development of amenities, businesses and new homes.

“The island really hasn’t lost its charms, and I personally love the convenience of the grocery store and restaurants,” she said. “For the most part, and in all the ways that matter, it still feels like it did when we were kids.”

The Pattersons spend as much time on the island as their busy schedules will allow, including a 2024 reunion Thanksgiving weekend with her brothers, their wives and all their children. When they aren’t enjoying the home themselves, they rent Chic Shellter through Airbnb and VRBO, a choice that not only offsets expenses, but also has led to unexpected new relationships.

“I love connecting with people and I’ll often leave personal little touches for our guests,” said Hooper. “As a result, many of our renters have become friends. To me, sharing it is part of the joy.”

‘‘ It still feels like it did when we were kids.
Just a few rows back from the ocean, Chic Shellter provides peeka-boo views of the Oak Island Lighthouse from the back porch.
YOU ARE HERE

Art is a feast for the eyes, and these striking pieces in the dining room provide a delightful visual treat. Hooper retrieved the dining room table and chairs from her studio’s storage, calling the set a funkier version of the one she grew up with.

Celebrating 14 Years as Owners & Operators

It’s hard to believe 14 years have passed since islanders Claude and Melissa Pope became owners and operators of the Maritime Market. Promising to elevate the island’s food and beverage scene, they dove in headfirst back in 2011, expanding the store’s selection to include USDA Prime meats, fresh local seafood and produce,

gourmet deli items, and a curated selection of fine wine and craft beer. In short order, customers came to rely on the array of offerings and began packing lighter, knowing the Market had it covered.

As the years passed, the market expanded to include Sweet Bay Gourmet, offering grab-and-go options for breakfast and lunch, fresh-squeezed citrus, sushi, fresh pasta, and other house-made culinary delights, along with order-ahead family meals to feed a crowd. Located inside the market, Copper’s Wood-Fired Kitchen has taken the island by storm with its Neapolitan-style pizza. Outside, overlooking the beautifully landscaped Forest Pavilion, Side Wok offers delicious pan-Asian takeout.

In any given season, on any given day, the Market might host a lavish oyster roast on the side porch, an intimate dinner featuring Bordeaux from

Claude’s cellar, or a Howl at the Moon party for hundreds at Beach Access 39. The common theme? Come as you are, kick up your heels, and enjoy good food, libations and the fellowship of friends, old and new.

Time has flown, but the more things change, the more they stay the same. Whether you’re a longtime islander or a first-time visitor, you’re treated like family by the Maritime Market family the moment you walk in the door.

Unless you’ve been marooned on an island far more remote than Bald Head, you’ve no doubt heard of the pickleball craze.

According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, it’s by far the fastest-growing sport in the nation—increasing an astonishing 159% over the past three years. Equally surprising to those who consider it a senior sport, the average age of a pickleball participant in the U.S. is 35, and the largest age group among players is 25-34. Tied for second in the age group category: players 18-24 and those 65+.

By all accounts, pickleball growth on the island has mirrored national trends, and the Bald Head Island Club’s board of directors has responded to the ever-increasing demand in a way that is nothing short of smashing

gameon!

Play began around 2 p.m., but the trash talking had been going on for hours.

On a sunny Saturday in May, four of the Triangle’s top male pickleball players gathered to dink it out at the Bald Head Island Club in an event that included a member round-robin and exhibition play from the celebrity guests.

Collin Shick, at the time the world’s number 12 player in men’s singles on the Carvana PPA tour, teamed up with former UNC and NBA basketball star Tyler Hansbrough. The two faced off against Brian Rosenthal and Chris Jaques. Rosenthal is the owner of RDUTennis and director of Raleigh Pro League; Jaques is the executive director of the Duke University Faculty Club.

An enthusiastic crowd that included many of the Bald Head Island Club’s most avid pickleball players surrounded court four of the new six-court pickleball complex, mesmerized by the foursome’s punishing drives, devastating drops, awesome overheads, and the fastest hands this side of a spaghetti western.

“Out!” shouted Hansbrough, as Jaques sent a blistering forehand down the line.

“Out of your reach,” retorted Rosenthal.

And so it went, with Shick/Hansbrough pulling slightly ahead in points and Rosenthal/Jaques absolutely dominating in the verbal abuse category.

if you build it, they

The way Jeff Archer, director of tennis at the Bald Head Island Club, remembers it, pickleball got rolling on Bald Head Island in the winter of 2020- 2021.

Longtime Bald Head Island resident Pat Miller recalled asking Cathy Wells, a Winston-Salem resident who owns one of the Bald Head Island Villas adjacent to the club, to teach her and some of the other ladies to play. “It took all four of us to get the scoring down,” laughed Pat. “That’s the hardest part of the game!” As the primary organizer of the burgeoning scene, Miller was dubbed “The Pickleball Queen.”

Initially, pickleball lines were put down on the last tennis court and players hit over the tennis net. When that wasn’t sufficient, the tennis court was divided into two pickleball courts with movable nets.

Men soon joined the women in playing and the club quickly added lines to a second tennis court “because we were bursting at the seams,” said Archer.

“The demand for pickleball play is huge—and growing” continued Archer. “While we still have an active group of tennis players, the ratio of court play is about 70% pickleball and 30% tennis, split about evenly among men and women.”

In addition to building the new, first-class pickleball facility as part of a major renovation to the Bald Head Island Club, the club also hired Michal Zaluski, known as “Z,” in June of 2023 as a full-time staff professional to oversee the club’s pickleball program. Certified in both tennis and pickleball, Zaluski runs

group and individual lessons, clinics, cardio pickleball classes and social play, such as Dinks & Drinks and family mixers.

“One of the reasons the sport is growing so quickly on Bald Head Island is the unbelievable culture here,” said Zaluski. “People are very welcoming of all levels of play, and anyone can jump on a court and be playing 30 minutes later. That’s not the case with most sports. Even having a tennis background is not necessary, although admittedly it can help.”

As part of the programming, Zaluski put together the May 2024 event, using contacts from his former position as director of racquets at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club. “We are all friends and have played together often,” he explained. “When I asked each of them if they would like to come to Bald Head Island for a few days and play pickleball, they jumped at the chance.”

...and keep coming

“It’s the best of both worlds honestly,” said Hansbrough, a pickleball enthusiast who plays four to five times a week. “Bald Head Island is such a beautiful place and the club’s new facility is really nice. It’s a very peaceful setting and then you get to play some competitive pickleball with your friends. It’s a lot of fun.”

At Zaluski’s invitation, Shick came to Bald Head Island twice in early 2024. The former North Carolina State University tennis player was a five-time ITA scholar-athlete who finished two years of medical school at UNC before taking a hiatus to play professional pickleball for a year. “When Z texted, I was excited because I absolutely love Bald Head,” he said. “I came here once when I was younger, and I feel lucky every time I get to come back. I love how peaceful it is, the golf carts, everything.”

a winning home-court

Rosenthal’s love of Bald Head goes deeper than most. He and his wife were married in the Bald Head Island Chapel in April of 2010 and had their reception at the Bald Head Island Club. “Meghan has been coming to the island her whole life,” said Rosenthal, who played tennis at N.C. State and has made a career within the tennis industry. “Getting married on the island was always her dream.” The couple made the exhibition weekend a family affair, bringing along their 11-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter.

Only Jaques was on his first trip to Bald Head Island. “But it won’t be the last,” he promised. “Today was an incredible opportunity,” said the former soccer player at UNC who shared the weekend with his wife and 3-month-old son. “I love playing with this crew anywhere, but this island is special. It’s absolutely beautiful and the people are so gracious. I would love to come back.”

As the exhibition wrapped up, the players continued their good-natured ribbing, stopping long enough to pose for pictures and chat with fans.

“Having events like this with top players is a big plus for our new facility,” summarized Miller. “As popular as the sport is, we just may need more courts in the future.”

And just like that, the Queen of Pickleball makes another excellent point.

BALD BOTTLE

Sip AND Savor the Strong Sense of Community

Jordyn Matthews, owner of Bald Head Bottle, likens wine to people—each bottle unique and worthy of getting to know fully.

“Every bottle of wine has its own personality and DNA,” she mused. “Each has different grapes, earthly elements and influences, with the mind of human winemakers further changing and engineering the final aromas and tastes. You have to get to know it and study it. Befriend it. Respect it.”

It’s an intriguing take on one of the world’s most beloved beverages, and an accurate reflection on Jordyn’s approach to her business and the greater Bald Head Island community.

“This business was conceived and designed to contribute to the island I love so much, and to provide another welcoming place to gather,” she said. “It’s not about alcohol so much as it is about getting a bunch of people together in a way that is wholesome and fun.”

Complexity and Balance

Jordyn and her husband Kirk first came to the island in 2014 and, like so many, immediately fell under its spell. They were, in her words, “serial renters” for years until one day, while at Island Retreat Spa next door, she noticed The Esplanade building under construction and began to daydream.

With a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a handy commercial real estate background, Jordyn approached Esplanade developer Tiffany Williams with a plan. Eighteen months later, in May of 2023, Bald Head Bottle opened, soon followed by the family purchasing a home on the island that September. Kirk’s job and the children’s schools are in Raleigh, so Jordyn commutes between the two homes weekly. It’s not always easy, she admitted, but the whole family loves the island and is completely supportive of the business.

“I joke with my husband that it’s like I’m having an affair with the island,” she laughed. “This island knows me, it gets me. It just feels like home.”

Because of the intimacy and intensity of that emotional connection, Jordyn feels protective of the island. “This might be an odd thing to say about a bar,” she said, “but I see this business as helping maintain the island’s beauty and innocence.”

Photos by Christi Golder

Also not typical of a drinking establishment, Bald Head Bottle is decidedly family friendly.

“Legally, kids can’t sit at the bar, but they are welcome in the space,” she emphasized.

“We host regular family events, like bingo nights, and we have a kids’ box on the snack menu.” Canine family members are welcome to join patrons on the deck, further contributing to the relaxed atmosphere.

Notes of Nostalgia

On the interior, Bald Head Bottle’s casually sophisticated decor was inspired by bars in Jordyn’s native Chicago, including one in her grandmother’s basement. “I worked with Lisa Sherry, a designer out of Charlotte,” she said.

“I had a vision based on my childhood, and she helped bring it to life.”

Jordyn calls the space “country club caliber, but inclusive,” elaborating that she wanted to provide an additional upscale place for people to go, especially since temporary members of both the Bald Head Island Club and the Shoals Club cannot access those facilities on weekends during the busy season.

“I want it to be the go-to for people who feel like dressing up and having a date night,

as well as someone coming off the beach in their bathing suit and coverup to buy a bottle of wine,” she said. “Coming here should feel like an everyday kind of special.”

Pairs Well with Others

Jordyn’s mostly-behind-the-scenes partner in Bald Head Bottle is Jason Kaczor, a friend from Raleigh who owns a wine shop next door to their home.

“When we were creating the shop, we batted around ideas of what to carry and decided on small production vineyards and wineries around the world, with an emphasis on organic producers and those who adhere to responsible farming practices,” she said. Domestic wines are the smallest part of the portfolio.

While initially Bald Head Bottle served wine and beer only, they added liquor to their offerings in the summer of 2024. Wine, however, continues to make up the majority of the business at 70 percent, with bar and retail sales of wine split 50-50.

Equally important is her partnership with other island businesses and organizations.

Bald Head Bottle sponsors and co-hosts events on a regular basis, furthering the sense of community for which the shop is known.

“We try to do something every month, even in January and February,” she said. “It’s always a lot of fun, and we try to be creative.”

The first event, Champagne and Caviar over Memorial Day weekend 2023, drew a huge crowd. “There was a tropical storm,” she remembered. “We were packed because everyone was looking for something to do!”

In addition to celebrations around major holidays, ongoing events range from parties to honor the spring and fall equinoxes to participating in island-wide pub crawls, and from supplying wine for yacht club functions to sponsoring a backto-school book and bottle swap.
