Connie’s Corner

We have exciting ski season news..... Our Mammoth weekend trip price has been reduced for the upcoming season! Your board has worked very hard to negotiate with our vendors and to pick the dates that help to keep our weekend trip prices down as low as possible. And we have once again planned for 2 weekday trips this season in response to last year’s participation. So what are you waiting for? Sign up now and reserve your spot on one or more of our trips, which make us such a special ski club! Please take a look at our very busy schedule to finish up 2010 as there is something for everyone! And each of the organizers would welcome your offer of help! We have Oktoberfest...”South Pacific” at the OC Performing Arts Center...a Halloween Party...a “Pray for Snow Party” to support BSSC’s racing program...monthly bridge nights, movie nights, and happy hour events...wine tasting....the newest Warren Miller Movie, “Wintervention”....and the year-ending holiday Boat Parade Party in Newport Beach. Between all of these events and our twice monthly meetings, we keep our members busy! Finally this month...I’d like to challenge each of our members to bring a friend to a fall meeting. Share the fun! And, should you see a new face in the crowd at a meeting, please introduce yourself and make them feel welcome. Let’s all be ambassadors this year for the greatest ski and sports club in southern California!

Connie Peacock, BSSC President

Happy Birthday BSSC

It was a bash and a blast. Many thanks to special people who worked to make this a special meeting, of course, our Signmaker extraordinaire, Donna Harvey, our man of many talents (even when he is not feeling well), Jess Gorman; Connie Peacock, our leader who also produced a schedule of events for the next few months, as well as her role as the Utah trip leader with material and booth, and Christy Walchli, my helpful “Balloon Lady” and Mammoth Trip Director and Sun Valley Leader. Thanks to Betty Bains for filling our schedule with fine events, Joe Culver, who manned the tennis table and talked about tennis, and wore a duel hat of history picture scanner. Thanks also go to Rich Toni for speaking on Mammoth mid-week trips and to Sheila Van Guilder who stepped in to man the Membership in Al Lawrence’s absence, Nova Madlock for directory assistance, Izzy Goberman for Race Raffle ticket sales, and Peggy Norris for her smiling face at our taco ticket spot. Also thanks to Corine Ghosn for sharing her birthday with us. Happy, Happy Corine. We want to extend special thanks to Laura Kennedy, Mammoth Mountain Resort local Representative who is a joy to talk to, and will be back on October 19th where she can really get us fired up on Mammoth. If you stopped to say hello, you might have noticed the Happy Birthday sign she had at her table, and the gifts she left us from Mammoth were wrapped in Birthday paper. Well done. As you can see to the right, our BSSC flag is traveling again! Nancy Slusher, new member Ralph Dexter and Barbara Jacobson in the Sierras on our 5 day hiking trip this August. Our hearty trio followed this trail along Rock Creek... mile after mile of the most gorgeous scenery. They were hiking at about 10,000+ feet on this trail between Bishop and Mammoth.

Let’s Go Skiing By Maxine Hanlon, VP Skiing

With hot weather like we had the last week in September it is tough to think about soft, cold snow and skiing - or is it? We have tentative dates for the Mammoth Weekend and Mid Week Trips and new pricing for the Weekend Bus trip of $330, a savings of $35 from last year. However, we need your support both as trip participants and volunteers. Our lodging will be the Snowflower Condos for all Mammoth trips. We have two more great ski trips — Sun Valley run by Christy Walchli and the Utah Trip led by Connie Peacock. We have just a few openings left on Sun Valley and some very important deadlines coming up on Utah. No later than October 10, it is “go” or “ no go.” Our pricing is based on a certain number of people going and without those numbers, the trip price is not realistic. At the October Board meeting, the fate of the Utah trip will be decided. ACTION is needed by you NOW. Contact Connie if you or your friends want to go — it is specially designed to be a quick trip with more skiing tailored to the needs of our working people. EVERY participant must sign in advance of the trip a BSSC trip wavier. For your consideration, a copy of the waiver and the BSSC trip policies are included in the BSSC website version of the newsletter. By the way, the name “SNOJOB” came into existence in 1968. Before that it was called the “No Name” newsletter. -
