Your voice in the Chamber’s 2026 Strategic Planning Survey will guide the path ahead
The Chamber kicked off September with the 36th Annual John Brock Awards dinner honoring Angelo L. Mazzei, inventor and owner, Mazzei Injectors. Angelo’s legacy of innovation, leadership, and service is a shining example of what makes our community extraordinary. In addition to celebrating Angelo’s achievements, Dr. Vernon Harper assisted the JBA Committee to recognize outstanding students from CSU Bakersfield with scholarships for pursuing their education with excellence and leadership.
This month reminded us of the importance of coming together in unity. We joined the Bakersfield Fire Department Station 15 for the September 11th Memorial Ceremony in remembrance of those who lost their lives 24 years ago. Together, we honored their memory and the courage of our first responders.
That spirit of unity is exactly what we need as we look ahead to shaping the Chamber’s future. We launched a new Chamber Member Survey for 2026 Strategic Planning. This is your opportunity to help guide the vision for the years ahead. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey by October 1st, at the following link: Complete the Survey. Your feedback will ensure that our advocacy, programs, and resources align with the needs of our diverse membership and reflect the issues that matter most to you.
We hosted our Labor Law & HR Forum, led by Attorney Jerry Pearson, where members gained valuable insights on compliance, employee discipline, and maintaining a respectful workplace. Our thanks to Jerry and the Klein DeNatale Goldner team for their continued support of this series. Our September Ambassador luncheon was focused on small business owners along with the resources available from Bank of America’s Center for Business Empowerment. Karen Zuber presented a check to cover the cost of future episodes of the Chamber Perk. Stay tuned to how your business can reap the rewards of this sponsorship!
Plus, this edition of Metro features our Report from the Capitol with Congressman Vince Fong. For nearly a decade, the Chamber has partnered with Rep. Fong, who has been a steadfast advocate for Kern County and the Central Valley. It was an honor to welcome him back to share updates from Washington and the federal issues shaping our region.
And, we finished the month with our collaboration with B3K’s inaugural event, Unbound. An “investment to impact” conference that celebrated the limitless potential for economic growth in Kern County!
Yes, we are united in our goals to build something better in Bakersfield and beyond! Please make sure your voice is heard by completing the survey by October 1st.

Greater Bakersfield Chamber Blessings,
I love the Beautiful Bakersfield Awards. There is something deeply encouraging about being in a room full of people who truly care about the place where we choose to raise our children and build careers. Exposure to the transformative work that businesses, nonprofits, and individuals do to improve the quality of life in Bakersfield makes me so proud to be a part of this community.
It was astonishing to be nominated for Young Professional of the Year with inspiring leaders Imad Jobah, Lauren Skidmore, Nik Boone, David Madding, Gabriel Adame, and Gabriel Arellano. This recognition was so generous and affirmed that the organizations I am blessed to be a part of are making an impact. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Beautiful Bakersfield Committee for this once-in-a-lifetime honor.
As the Executive Director of Valley Center for the Blind (VCB), I have the privilege of working with a team to support, train, and employ people who are blind or have low vision. VCB provides a wide array of services from teaching seniors with vision loss how to keep living independently, to helping young adults prepare for and attain successful careers, to bringing parents of blind children together for support. In short, VCB shines bright in a sea of hopelessness for the thousands of people who have no other specialized service provider to rely on for hundreds of miles.
Our expanded facility in Bakersfield is a testament to the organization’s commitment to creating a reliable and innovative resource for people who are blind. Still, we have so far to go. Over 66% of Californians who are blind live below the poverty line and only 23% of people over the age of 16 who report difficulty seeing even with glasses are employed in this country. Over 75% of the VCB staff identify as blind, and so everything we do exemplifies the power of lived experience, informed choice, and creating opportunity.
We delight in the opportunity to speak up for our clients who are significantly underrepresented in social services, policy, and public discourse. Some of our wins in the last two years were accomplished through raising a unique voice in Washington, D.C. and Sacramento. Constant advocacy is key to understanding that blindness may be inconvenient and challenging, but VCB is proof that blindness is not the end—it’s a different kind of beginning.
Having returned to Bakersfield over seven years ago, I have been drawn to many vibrant organizations that make our world a better place. A special thank you to the Leadership Bakersfield Program through the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of Bakersfield Downtown, Royal Family Kids Camp, Bakersfield Angels, Daughters of the American Revolution, Bakersfield City Ballet, Kern County Library, Stewards, and countless other places proving that the spirit of Bakersfield is nothing short of remarkable. I look forward to serving this community for many fulfilling years to come because, as best said by Helen Keller, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”
From local stages to galleries, Leadership Bakersfield’s 2025 Arts & Culture Day showcased the city’s vibrant creative spirit
To highlight the abundance and rich history of the arts and culture in Bakersfield, Leadership Bakersfield’s 2025 Class spent a full day exploring the visual, performing, and cultural arts that comprise the fabric of our community. Participants embarked on a journey across the city, discovering Bakersfield’s rich artistic heritage, diverse talent, and thriving in creative spaces.
The day commenced with breakfast burritos, quiche, fruit, coffee, and mimosas at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County, where the class enjoyed a hands-on art experience led by Art Sherwin, followed by a tour of the Kern County Museum with Ashleigh Meyers. The day continued at the Stars Theater for lunch. While dining on a delicious meal prepared by Mossman’s Catering, the group was treated to performances by Stars Theater local talent.
In the afternoon, the class visited the Portrait of a Warrior Gallery, guided by gallery founder Lili Marsh, followed by a tour of the Bakersfield Museum of Art led by Victor Gonzalez, followed by a visit to the Arts Council of Kern for a tour and an interactive, handson activity led by Em Radmacher. The day concluded with a social networking and surprise flash mob by the talented youth of the Boys & Girls Club of Kern County.
The Greater Bakersfield Chamber extends our heartfelt thanks to Day Chairs, Chelsea Dow, Linda Sullenger, and Zane Smith, for orchestrating another “Best Day Ever!” Sincere appreciation also goes to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County for serving as this year’s Day Sponsor and for their invaluable support. Arts and culture remain deeply ingrained in the very identity of Bakersfield, offering both a connection to our past and inspiration for our future. Leadership Bakersfield’s 2025 Class left the day with a renewed appreciation for the diverse creative spirit that thrives in our community.
If you’re inspired by Arts & Culture Day’s impact and the meaningful work accomplished by Leadership Bakersfield participants, seize the opportunity to become a day sponsor for the 2026 cohort. To learn more about sponsorship opportunities, contact us at info@bakochamber.com.
The Greater Bakersfield Chamber welcomed Congressman Vince Fong, R-Bakersfield, for its Report from the Capitol, continuing a partnership that has spanned nearly a decade of public service. This members-only event offers local business and community leaders an exclusive opportunity to hear directly from Washington on the federal issues shaping Kern County and the Central Valley.
“Congressman Fong has been a steadfast advocate for Kern County and the Central Valley since his earliest days in public service to his current role,” said Chamber President & CEO Janelle Capra. “The Chamber is proud to have supported his vision since 2016, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration on policies that strengthen local businesses, create jobs, and improve quality of life.”
The Chamber’s Political Action Committee (BAKPAC) first endorsed Fong in 2016 when he ran for the 34th Assembly District seat, recognizing his deep roots in Kern County, his policy expertise, and his commitment to the business community. Now serving in the U.S. House of Representatives for California’s 20th District, Congressman Fong has carried that legacy to Washington.
In his remarks, Fong outlined priorities, including:
• Energy: Partnering with the Bureau of Land Management, Fong continues to advocate for the reopening of oil and gas leasing in Central California to reduce reliance on foreign energy sources. “If we do nothing, California is going to be more and more dependent on foreign sources of oil,” said Fong.
• Infrastructure: Fong is championing the AMERICA DRIVES Act and leading efforts to redirect $4 billion in recovered federal high-speed rail funds toward practical infrastructure projects across California.
• Agriculture: As vice chair of the Modern Agriculture Caucus, Fong is working to advance innovation in farming, particularly in smart irrigation and water-use efficiency. “As technology advances, we must leverage innovation to strengthen our agriculture industry in my state and across the nation,” said Fong.
• Workforce Development: Earlier this year, Fong hosted the district’s first Skilled Trades Fair, connecting more than 150 high school students with career opportunities in carpentry, electrical work, and advanced manufacturing
• Public Safety & Small Business: Fong introduced the SKIM Act to combat Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) fraud, which has siphoned hundreds of millions of dollars from vulnerable families. “Criminals who steal from children, families, and the elderly must be held accountable, and we must protect taxpayers from those who commit public assistance fraud,” said Fong.
The Report from the Capitol was made possible by the generous support of cosponsors Chevron and Hydrostor, as well as the following contributing sponsors: Berry Corporation, California Resources Corporation, Tejon Ranch Co., and Valley Strong Credit Union. The Chamber also extends its gratitude to its members whose steadfast support has made all this work possible.
