Message from the CEO
We kicked off May with the first in-person Kern County Economic Summit since 2020, in partnership with the Kern Economic Development Corporation and California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB). Held on the CSUB campus, this year’s summit took a refreshing turn from traditional forecasting to focus on the real-world issues shaping our region’s future: workforce preparedness, innovation, and healthcare sustainability. Dr. Vernon Harper, CSUB President and Chamber Chair Elect, welcomed attendees to the campus along with economists Dr. Richard Gearhart and Dr. Nyakundi Michieka, who shared about the region’s growth beyond traditional sectors. Our board members, Emily Duran, Ken Keller and Maybelle Liquigan shared the stage with other healthcare leaders to discuss the importance of investing and training our medical professionals and how collaboration across all healthcare systems creates a stronger, healthier community. The event concluded with a focus on investments in the future of our economy, featuring highlights from Pacific Steel Group, Stratolaunch, LLC, and the highly anticipated Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tejon. It was a powerful reminder that collaboration is not just a value, it’s our path forward.
We held our second quarterly Coffee with the Chamber on Thursday, May 22, with guest speaker Justin Leland, Director of Business Services and Financial Advisor at Moneywise Wealth Management . Justin shared insights into the Greater Bakersfield Chamber 401(k) Plan, a Multiple Employer Plan (MEP) designed to help local businesses offer competitive retirement benefits. This is just one example of how Chamber membership delivers real, tangible value. Are you a member of the MEP? If not, reach out to learn more!
And it's the official countdown to the 35th annual Beautiful Bakersfield Awards, presented by Valley Strong Credit Union, Saturday, June 14, at the Dignity Health Theater and Convention Center. This year's theme, “A Night at the MET,” celebrates creativity and excellence in style and spirit. I’m thrilled to share that the event is officially sold out once again! We’re honoring 99 nominees across 16 categories (plus the Chairwoman’s Award), each recognized for their extraordinary contributions to making Bakersfield beautiful. This award-style gala continues the legacy started by Mayor Mary K. Shell and reflects our community’s passion, resilience, and heart.
Whether you’re tuning in on KGET-TV 17 or joining us in person, we invite you to be part of Bakersfield’s Biggest Night!

Blessings,
Janelle Capra President & CEO Greater Bakersfield Chamber

A VIP Kern County Economic Summit Kick-Off
The Kern County Economic Summit kicked off in style with a VIP Dinner sponsored by Kaiser Permente before the main event at the iconic Luigi’s Restaurant and Delicatessen. This gathering brought together local business leaders, elected officials, community stakeholders, and economic development partners for an evening of connection, collaboration, and celebration.
With a warm, welcoming atmosphere and Luigi’s signature dishes on full display, the dinner was a meaningful opportunity to build relationships and set the tone for a dynamic day of insight and innovation at the Summit.
From toasts to shared stories, the evening highlighted the power of partnership in driving Kern County’s economic future forward.

Summit Spotlights Growth, Challenges, Innovation
The Kern County Economic Summit, back in person
The 2025 Kern County Economic Summit, presented by California State University, Bakersfield, the Kern Economic Development Corporation, and the Greater Bakersfield Chamber, convened business leaders, educators, economists, and healthcare executives on Thursday, May 1, to spotlight the region’s dynamic economic future. Held in person for the first time since the 2020 pandemic, the event drew a packed crowd to CSUB’s Student Recreation Center Gymnasium.
Panels on education and healthcare offered deep insight into workforce development and community well-being. Notable education leaders, including Dr. Steven Bloomberg, Dr. Jerry Fliger, and Dr. Vernon Harper, discussed collaborative efforts to expand student access and job training opportunities across Kern. Healthcare CEOs shared strategies to improve outcomes and access in a region challenged by rural disparities.
CSUB economists Dr. Richard Gearhart and Dr. Nyakundi Michieka offered data-driven updates. Gearhart emphasized strong job growth across sectors except mining, noting, “We have 160,000 more people employed in Kern since 2010.” However, he warned tariffs could significantly harm agriculture and logistics. Michieka echoed the importance of economic stability but noted slower population growth in Kern compared to statewide trends.
Innovation took center stage with updates from Stratolaunch, Pacific Steel Group, and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tejon, each highlighting Kern’s expanding industrial and tourism footprint.
“From healthcare to higher ed to space tech, this summit reminds us that Kern’s economy is diverse, resilient, and poised for the future,” said Janelle Capra, President and CEO of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber.
The Summit concluded with a renewed commitment to public-private collaboration, proving Kern County’s economy is not just surviving, but evolving.

2024 Beautiful Bakersfield Award
Recipient – Fatima Tulfo
Being nominated for the Beautiful Bakersfield Award in the Young Professional category was an honor. Being selected as the winner was overwhelming, all in the best ways. As someone who wasn't seen as college-bound, becoming the first in my family to earn a master's degree was a significant milestone. I hope my story reminds others that no matter where you start, you can grow, overcome challenges, and become a better version of yourself. The recognition represents how far I've come and how much my community has supported me along the way.
It's important to give back to the place that raised me. Bakersfield gave me my foundation, and I am committed to giving my time, energy, and heart to help Bakersfield be a better place to live, work, and visit. This commitment has grown deeper since becoming a mother and a godmother. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to set a good example. I want my son and goddaughters to see that you can achieve great things by working hard and helping others.
At Kern Community Foundation, I'm fortunate to support programs and partnerships that create real change. I have the opportunity to work alongside hardworking nonprofits and community leaders who are passionate about making Bakersfield a better place to live. Together, we're focusing on local issues, from food insecurity and educational attainment to long-term community resilience. I'm grateful to be part of a community that values its people and lifts one another up.
Thank you to the Greater Bakersfield Chamber for this

honor and for highlighting individuals and businesses who make our community stronger.

Coffee, Collaboration, and a Clearer Path to Retirement: Chamber Hosts Insightful Member Meetup
At the latest Coffee with the Chamber on Thursday, May 22, members and community of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber gathered for a morning of connection and clarity, as Moneywise Wealth Management’s Justin Leland broke down complex financial topics with refreshing simplicity.
The networking event provided a relaxed yet informative setting for local business leaders to connect with one another and a trusted financial expert. Leland, a seasoned voice in retirement planning and economic insights, shared timely updates on market trends and addressed attendees' most pressing financial questions.
One major highlight of the discussion centered around the Chamber’s 401(k) Multiple Employer Plan (MEP), a powerful member benefit designed to simplify retirement planning for small- and medium-sized businesses. Through this program, local employers can now offer their teams a competitive retirement savings option without the traditional administrative burden or high costs.
“This plan levels the playing field,” said Leland. “It allows smaller companies to access institutional-grade retirement services typically reserved for much larger organizations.”

Powering Possibility: A Day Inside Kern’s Energy & Water Lifelines Energy Day
This month, the 2025 Leadership Bakersfield class took a deep dive into Kern County’s vital role in powering California during their immersive and engaging “Energy Day.” The day wouldn’t have been possible without the vision and coordination of Advisory Council Day Chairs: Jamie Absher (Forefront Power) and Ever Marquez (Cal Water). From oil & gas and renewables to water systems and hands-on repairs, participants gained a comprehensive look at how energy and water flow through the region.
The day began at the historic Kern County Museum, where the group gathered over a continental breakfast to hear some of the area’s most influential voices in the energy sector. Richard Chapman, President & CEO of Kern Economic Development Corporation, shared economic insights tied to all energy sectors. Followed by Mayor Dave Noerr of Taft, highlighted the community’s energy legacy and evolving future. Suzanne Noble of the Western States Petroleum Association (WSPA) ended the speaker segment by offering an industry perspective on policy and innovation. To wrap up their time at the museum, Jlynn Bowen gave an exclusive tour of the Black Gold Exhibit.
The learning continued at the Kern Community College District (KCCD) Office, where the focus shifted to renewable energy. Sara Sullivan and Norma Rojas from CREL (California Renewable Energy Lab) and Marcos Rodriguez from Bakersfield College discussed the region’s commitment to sustainable integration and workforce development. Additionally, Marcos provided the participants with a tour of the KCCD District Office’s solar project for a better visual understanding.
Next, students dove into a hands-on journey through Bakersfield Water infrastructure, students immersed themselves in the fascinating world of water systems, guided by California Water Service. Their first stop was the Kern River Pumping Plant, a critical facility that draws raw water from the Kern River for the Northeast Bakersfield Water Treatment Plant. There, students saw firsthand the vast raw water ponds capable of holding up to 100 acre feet of water. Which serves as a vital emergency backup supply for the City of Bakersfield.
The experience deepened as the group toured the Northeast Water treatment plant guided by plant manager John Dulebohn. With a peak production capacity of 20 million gallons per day, the plant offered students a comprehensive look at the full water treatment process from raw water intake to potable drinking water.
Adding depth to the experience, Rafael Molina, District Manager for California Water Services in Bakersfield, hosted an engaging Q&A session. He walked students through the intricacies of Cal Waters water distribution system, emphasizing the complexity and coordination required to keep potable water flowing to thousands of homes and businesses.
The day was wrapped up with energy and excitement as students were treated to a live water leak repair demonstration. To top it all off, they rolled up their sleeves for a hands-on competition, where getting wet wasn’t just encouraged it was inevitable. The experience combined education, engagement, and a splash of fun. Leaving students with a new appreciation for the water systems that support their daily lives.
