FundaciĂłn RodrĂguezAcosta, Granada Roll over the Alhambra in Granada, where you need to book months in advance and brave the hoards of people queueing to get in, and where you spend a long time seeing every single nook and cranny of the extensive site. This often overlooked tourist site lives just in the Alhambra's shadow: a spectacular house designed by an artist during the early 20th century, full of bizarre and interesting things, and well worth a couple of hours of your time.

I

recently had the opportunity to visit this wonderful sprawling house in Granada which was built between 1916 and 1930 by the

Spanish painter, Jose Maria Rodriguez Acosta. The house is now looked after by an established foundation and you can pay to visit the house and grounds. The building is situated just below the Alhambra Palace and sits in an elevated postion overlooking the beautiful city of Granada. It is one of the most peculiar buildings of Spanish architecture and was declared a national monument of interest in 1982. Rodriguez Acosta was a trained artist from Granada who began his studies at the Granada School of Arts and Crafts and then at the Faculty of Science at Granada University. He later became a pupil of Emilio Sala in Madrid and made many trips to Paris. He was in the lucky position that he was born to a weathly banking family which allowed him the freedom and autonomy to pursue his passion of painting, which in the early 20th century won him important prizes in both national and international exhibitions. Between 1915 and 1930 his brushes were forced to take a back seat as he undertook the planning, construction and decoration of his beloved home on the hill below the Alhambra in Granada. The house sits on a hill and this helped with the design of the beautiful terraces 8 THE MARKET PLACE

and gardens, which are a major feature of the house along with the phenomenal views across the city. We visited on a Sunday morning and managed to get parked up just below the foundation, although to be safe it is probably better to pay for parking in the Alhambra car park and take the short walk down. It costs just 5 euros to take the tour around parts of the house, gardens and tunnels. The guide was extremely informative and spoke in English as we were led around the artists home that he treasured so much. We were initially led to where Rodriguez Acosta displayed his artwork, in a grand room filled with marble and grandiose pillars. He certainly did not do things by halves, the room looked like it was fit for a King, with an eclectic mix of styles which would not have been the norm for that era, but looked very appealing. Unfortunately, we were unable to take photos in this part of the building or of his artwork, which was similar to his architectural style, being a unique medley of traditional paintings combined with a few more modern in style, so much so that a couple would not have looked out of place in a modern art gallery today. As we wandered out of the building we were able to admire the remarkable views which never fail to take your breath away, even though on this particular morning it was slightly misty as there had been a few showers in the night. We were also able to admire the impressive and ornamental gardens filled with mature plants and manicured bushes and beautifully shaped cypress trees which had created tunnels to walk through. The artist, being from a rich family had been able to travel to far-flung exotic places and he had brought back a variety of artifacts, statues and ideas to adorn his gardens. Roman statues, a Venician balcony, he copied pillars and columns which were very Roman in theme. He had bathing pools and fountains galore mingled with some tradional Spanish elements such as the patio tiling and heavy wooden doors with "rejas" or bars across the windows. The plants were also magnificent, mature fruit trees and a beautiful wisteria in full bloom. The guide then led us underneath the building where Rodriguez Acosta had built a series of tunnels, which legend has it were also connected underground to the Alhambra. It was said that Rodriguez Acosta entertained his many elite friends in this part of his house, he had made the tunnels so that every one metre there was an archway and these tunnels led downwards. It very much appeared like the artist was trying 10 THE MARKET PLACE

to play with the minds of other people. They seemed as if he was trying to set up some sort of elaborate puzzle or game with his friends. Going through these tunnels gave you a very strange and wierd sensation, so much so that one person in our party had to leave, it was all too much for her! Finally outside again we continued to explore the beautiful garden area where we were led to the far right of the building and on the edge was a separate house. This house the guide confirmed was where the artist installed his lover and her child. He never married and continued to live in the large part of the building preferring solitude whilst completing his many pieces of art. The foundation of Rodriguez Acosta can be visited in groups of less than 25 people from 10am until 6.30pm in summer and in winter from 10am until 4.30pm. You can get there by car or by using the bus stop C30 or C32. Or you can walk from Granada city centre. See the website: www.fundacionrodriguezacosta.com

ways to cut your grocery bill in Spain

With ever-rising prices for your weekly shop, finding ways to cut your grocery bill should be high on your 'To Do' list. Follow our tips on how to save.

by MoneySaverSpain.com

#1 Write a shopping list… and stick to it!

#5 Switch to own brand products

Almost half of shoppers overbuy because we forget what we really need.

Try downsizing from branded to own brand products with one or two items a week. Don’t like them? Go back to your normal brand.

The easy solution is to create a list on your phone using a free app such as Out of Milk. Using an app means there’s a higher chance of jotting items down as soon as you think about them, rather than preparing a hurried list just before you go shopping.

#2 Don’t waste food In Spain nearly 8 million tonnes of food is wasted every year with around a third of that waste attributable to households. Once inside the supermarket we’re tempted by BOGOFs (buy one, get one free), 4×3 offers and more “special prices”. In reality the price of individual products is increased just to look like we’re getting a bargain. Once again there are lots of free apps and recipe sites online that you could use. Take a look at Love Food Hate Waste for tips and their free app.

#3 Do your regular and bulky shopping online Increased competition means that prices are getting more competitive online. As long as you meet the free delivery threshold, you don’t need to stick to a single provider.

#4 Don’t be embarrassed to use discount coupons Every little helps, and using discount coupons for those items you’re going to buy anyway is a no-brainer. Danone, Pescanova, Nestle and Heineken Group are among those currently offering discount coupons. 12 THE MARKET PLACE

You might be surprised by the quality of some Spanish own brands: Hacendado at Mercadona is nearly always well rated in surveys. However don’t assume that own brands are always going to be cheaper, take a moment to check before putting them in your trolley.

#6 Watch out with larger sized products Bigger is not always better. Every time you’re faced with a big sign indicating a special price for extra ml, grams or units do the maths (use the calculator on your phone). I’ve lost count of the times when bigger wasn’t cheaper, however as we’re usually in a hurry it’s easy for supermarkets to fool us into paying more. If bigger is cheaper, consider whether you can freeze or save part. It’s not a saving if you end up throwing some away.

#7 Don’t think that supermarkets know how to divide! Carrying on from the previous tip: most supermarket prices show the price of items also per 100ml or grams, which is great for comparing between different sized products. Except that it seems that many employees don’t know how to divide! Remember to take a few seconds to double check the maths. continued on page 14

#8 Make sure you use your supermarket loyalty scheme Not all supermarkets have one, but if they do and you’re a regular customer why aren’t you using it? Take a look at Carrefour’s discount cards as an example, but don’t buy more just to get a bigger discount.

#9 Avoid grocery street vendors No, we’re not talking about the local weekly market – that’s a great place to shop and save. What we do mean are those people located at the street corner / bus stop / train station who sell whatever they happen to have got their hands on that day. Selling without a permit is illegal, but more worrying is that there have been cases of people selling foods unfit for human consumption.

#10 Find the cheapest supermarket in your region Take a look at Spanish consumer organisation OCU’s list of the

cheapest supermarkets. The list includes small regional and national chains as well as the big players. There’s a considerable difference between the cheapest supermarkets at the top of the list and the most expensive ones at the bottom. Consumers can save between 276 euros and 3000 euros depending on their location.

Lux Mundi's Madrid & Segovia Excursion Recently a friendly group of people set off on Lux Mundi's, Torre del Mar and Fuengirola, joint excursion to Madrid.

T

hey arrived at the beautiful town of Aranjuez in the early afternoon; where there was time to take photos of the palace, walk through the beautiful gardens and to have lunch. They then continued their journey to Collado Villalba and checked in at the Hotel Galaico for 4 nights. The following day, Tuesday they joined the bus for the short journey to Madrid, where on arrival they collected 2 day tourist bus tickets and spent the day sightseeing, visiting places such as the Royal Palace, the Cathedral, the Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol.

On the Wednesday they again joined the bus after breakfast, returning to Madrid, where on arrival they entered the Prado Museum and there was plenty of time to marvel at the huge collection of works of famous artists. Later many chose to visit the Reina Sofia Museum to see Picasso's famous painting, Guernica, and some took a stroll through the Botanical Gardens and the Retiro Park. The following day there was a trip to Segovia where they were met by a guide who walked with them from the impressive aqueduct, through the main street passing many former palaces,

the Jewish Quarter and the Cathedral, until they reached the Alcazar where the tour ended. There was then time to visit the amazing Alcazar and the impressive Cathedral and to have lunch. On Friday the group returned to Torre del Mar and Fuengirola, exhausted but extremely happy after a very successful trip. Lux Mundi would like to thank all who supported this excursion, which enables them to continue with their charitable work and we hope to see you all again at future events in the Centre and excursions.

First Driving Impressions – JEEP Wrangler, UK Press event – The Lakes

It was up to Windermere for the UK Press launch of the new Jeep Wrangler. On first inspection the Wrangler didn’t seem to have changed much, it was still a rugged looking, go-anywhere JEEP, and every inch this iconic vehicle. Jeep got its name when the US Government want a General Purpose vehicle, mainly for the Military, and became known as the General Purpose, or GP for short. The GP quickly turned into Jeep, and so the brand was born. We set off in the Wranglers in convoy along the shore of the Lake and as soon as we got in, we could see, feel and smell the improved quality - it is now almost premium in the cabin. After climbing up into the seats, like getting into a truck, it is surprising to find such a luxurious interior. After a few miles on some twisty, narrow country lanes, where the Wrangler behaved perfectly, it was time to do a bit of off-roading. We were warned it could get a bit severe in places – an understatement if ever there was one. The first bit of the off-road course was quite tame, just grass, mud and small stones to go over. Then we saw the hill we had to

go up, and presumably, back down again. This section of the testing was gruelling, not only for the car, but for us too. Talk about being thrown around, up and down, left to right, right to left, and all virtually at the same time. The Wrangler took us on a mountain climbing exercise, we were literally climbing a mountain. Well, probably not exactly a mountain as they don’t have mountains in the Lake District, but pretty close to it. Everything put in front of it, it managed to get over, around, or plough through. After over an hour of being frightened to death going up, there was a JEEP at the top of the hill with tea, coffee and bikkies. Not sure how it made it up there without spilling everything out of the flasks, but a well earned short break. Next problem… getting back down again, oh heck… another hour of being chucked about. The Wrangler is powered by two all-new engines: a 2.2 MultiJet 2 turbo diesel that produces 200hp, the other is a 2.0-litre petrol that produces 272hp. This new car has new styling all round, giving it a fresh appearance, but still on first looks, does look similar to the previous Wrangler. It does have a lowered beltline with larger

16 THE MARKET PLACE

windows for better visibility, and there are enough changes to spot the difference. The interior is much improved with increased storage space, presumably to store more sick-bags..!! The Wrangler is available as a short wheelbase two-door, or the longer wheelbase four-door. With either model you can take off the roof panels making it an open-top. Back in the cars to make the descent, and back to civilisation. Checking we were in 4L (Full-time four-wheel drive – Low Range) took a deep breath, and we headed back down the steep incline, littered with large rocks, boulders, slippery mud, streams of water, and just about everything nature could throw at us. But all the systems worked perfectly, the four-wheel drive, the traction control, the hill-descent, all operated together, all in perfect harmony. To get us back on solid ground back down the hill, or as we preferred to call it, the mountain, just sounds better, and more realistic. This Wrangler is almost unique in the car world, just a handful of similar competitors that are luxurious and look as good in the city as they do in rural settings. Cars that are fairly comfortable in every day situations on normal roads, but turn into really capable go-anywhere, do-anything vehicles – really clever engineering. Not sure how they do it but they do, and JEEP have had plenty of years to practice and get it right. Prices for the new JEEP Wrangler in the UK start from £44,865 and go up to £48,365.

Ideas to update your outdoor awning/shade fabric for summer

Covering your terrace or balcony with a good awning is possibly the best solution to withstand the sunny hours in the hottest months of the year. The mechanism can last in perfect condition for many years, but not so much the fabric, which can suffer from cuts, scratches and wear and tear in general. Here are some ideas to update the fabric of your awning, and therefore get full enjoyment out of your garden or terrace, shaded from the sun’s strong rays. Polyester Fabric for the Awning Polyester fabric is the cheapest of all. Therefore, as you can imagine, it won’t last for many seasons but it will get you out of trouble for a couple of seasons and is a quick solution for those who are looking for a cheap price. There are an immense variety of colours and patterns to choose from. In addition to the traditional stripey classic fabric, there are shades of one full colour or some with original motifs. Remember that the darker the colour of the fabric, the higher the percentage of filtered UV rays. The down side of choosing a very intense tone is that in the case of using it in windows, you will also reduce light coming into the house. This type of material should only be used in awnings that do not have a prolonged exposure to sunlight (for example in areas of sun and shade). And whenever possible, spray it with a protector to save it a little during the intense light of the summer. 20 THE MARKET PLACE

Acrylic Fabric for the Awning Halfway between the most and the least resistant are the acrylic fabrics. The great advantage is that they filter more than 80% of UV rays. This kind of fabric tolerates both wind and humidity quite well. They usually do not tear or spoil easily. Possibly the only “but” that we find is the issue of ventilation. If you install a pergola with this type of awning on your terrace, you may feel more continued on page 22

heat generating through the fabric. Acrylic fabrics can be used in the structures of arms, curtain, balcony or pergolas too.

Microperforated Fabric This is the most modern of all of the fabrics. It is a very special and very technical fabric. Its level of UV filtration goes up to 94% and at the same time it has the great advantage of allowing the evacuation of hot air accumulated under the fabric, thanks to its microperforated system (that way the temperature is reduced under your awning and you can avoid the greenhouse effect). This type of fabric is recommended most for terraces because of it’s weight. On a balcony you could use it but you would possibly have to motorize the drive so as not to end each day with arm ache. In addition, it is convenient to vacuum it from time to time to remove dust, and in the case of stains, use water and soap cautiously on it.

Canvas Screen for an Awning This type of fabric is composed of glass fibre and a PVC coating. It’s not like the curtains you’re used to seeing, it’s much thicker. Its great advantage is that it retains heat on the outside allowing light to pass through. Its fabric has micro-pores, which allow the fabric to breathe. Of course if you want to protect yourself from the rain and sun, this is not your fabric. The main drawback of this fabric is that it is sensitive to breakage, especially as a result of temperature changes. But, if you are going to

install it in an area that is not too exposed to the sun, it will hold up well for several seasons.

Waterproof PVC Fabric for an Awning The waterproof PVC fabric is widely used in shops or terraces, where you want to enjoy the outdoors despite the weather conditions. This fabric is composed of polyester fibres and a PVC coating on both sides of the awning. In this way, even if it rains you can enjoy the coverage of the awning. More expensive than the previous ones, it can be beneficial if you spend a lot of time on your terrace, even in the cold months. If you decide on a fabric of this type, keep in mind that the water needs to fall off somewhere. You need to make sure that the awning is sloped so that the rainwater can run away, so that you are not left with stagnant water anywhere. 22 THE MARKET PLACE

The Guardia Civil have arrested an Engish citizen who has been accused of being responsible for the start of the forest fire that burned on the 20th May over much of the Cerro de San Isidro. Officers from Seprona identified the start of the fire after being tipped off by various witnesses. The man apparently lit a small fire to burn various bits of rubbish, and due to the dryness of the terrain and the strong wind, the flames spread rapidly. Officers have also identified another man, who accompanied the first. Three helicopters were dispatched to the site and officers of the local fire department, civil protection officers and local police officers from Nerja. The flames were stabilised at 2.30pm and had burned 2 hectares of land, scrubland and pine forest. The area is frequented by residents and tourists since it offers panoramic views over Nerja.

John Lewis Octave

Roberts Radio Retro With DAB/DAB+ FM Wireless Internet Digital Radio and Amazon Alexa Roberts is known for its colourful, retro style radios, and the Revival RD70 continues that trend with this 1950s inspired set. It may look old hat but it's bang up to date in terms of quality, with punchy sounding pop music and clear speech as well as the latest tech. It's also supremely easy to use and thanks to its ability to accept batteries, you can carry it around the house as you go about your day. The only down side is that although it sounds great some of the other rivals sound even crisper. However, if you love this classic vintage look, it has everything you need.

VQ Susie- Q DAB/FM/DAB+ Digital and FM Radio, Internet Radio and Bluetooth. Also Spotify connect and multiroom. It can be used with the UNDOK multiroom speaker system app, available on google play, and can be controlled remotely from the app. There is no remote though and without the app the small screen and menus make it a little faffy to use. Health, Body & Soul Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle

What your skin is trying to tell you about your mental health

How alcohol affects your body as you get older

“Middle-aged people are more likely to drink three or more standard drinks a day,” says Geoff Munro of the Alcohol and Drug Foundation. “This ups the risk of chronic alcoholrelated diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer and liver cirrhosis. These conditions are largely the result of regular, long-term drinking, and the risk increases with more than two standard drinks a day.” The reason alcohol is linked to so many diseases is because it affects every bodily system. “As it’s carried via the bloodstream it enters every organ,” says Munro. “One standard drink takes about an hour to be processed by the liver, so alcohol circulates in the body for a long time.” It’s also harder to tolerate as you age, due to physiological changes, such as a decline in muscle mass and an increase in fat. Bad news, then, for those in their 60s, who are most likely to have more than five standard drinks on five or more nights per week, and those aged 70 and above – the group most likely to drink every day. “An older adult who drinks the same amount as a younger person will likely have a higher blood alcohol concentration,” says accredited practising dietitian Joel Feren. You can have a wine with dinner – just don’t down the bottle! “Drinking a small amount of alcohol regularly may reduce your risk of developing dementia and depression,” says Feren. And when it comes to red or white, choose the darker drop. 34 THE MARKET PLACE

The skin is the body's largest organ and recent research has confirmed that it acts as both an immediate stress perceiver, as well as a target of stress responses. That is, your skin not only detects stress, but is often the first thing to reflect that stress outwardly, typically with an inflammatory response. Although cause and effect can be difficult to pin down, considerable data suggests that in some people at least, stress and other psychological factors can activate or worsen certain skin conditions. The link between psychological stress and the onset or aggravation of multiple skin diseases, has led to the investigation of how the brain and skin communicate with each other. The brain-skin

connection, similar to the gut-skin axis, looks at how the skin reacts to stress by activating the endocrine and immune systems, and the negative impact of chronic stress on skin health. Our skin contains sweat glands, blood vessels, nerve endings and cells controlled by our immune and nervous systems, which in turn are easily triggered by our mental health. More often than not stress is the main culprit. When we experience stress or anxiety, our body releases cortisol. This is a natural hormone that helps the body deal with stress, but if our body is exposed to persistent high levels of cortisol, it can wreak havoc on your skin. Stress, anxiety, depression, and other psychological conditions may be an underlying reason for common skin issues hyperhidrosis, acne and psoriasis.

A trick to help you fall asleep in a minute flat! Sleep expert Dr Nerina Ramlakhan says the trick to falling asleep instantly is to simply give yourself a hug when you get into bed. Dr Ramlahkan said the comforting gesture helps us to “feel safe” and can be key to getting the NHS recommended amount of seven to eight hours. The sleep professional says: “It’s something many of us more than likely do without even realising. “Feeling safe and relaxed before bed is the fundamental component to a good night’s sleep, and hugging yourself for at least one minute while in bed is the trick to feeling settled.” When we hug another person, our brain releases hormones which help us to feel good, such as oxytocin and serotonin. These hormones lead to us feeling safe, secure and establishing trust – and you get the same effect when Getting one you hug yourself. Dr Ramlahkan added: extra hour of “Simply place your right hand under your left armpit, and place your left arm over sleep each night your right arm, with your left hand gently does more for your but firmly resting on your right shoulder. Focus on breathing deeply, relax and daily happiness than you’ll be asleep within the minute.”

a big pay rise!

My Encounters withbyWine Irene Sayas

Los Frutales

www.ventana-abierta.es

White wine from red grapes 100% Merlot From Joaquin Fernandez Ecological Winery, Sierras de Malaga. Grapes hand-picked in the early hours of the morning. This Merlot grape is the first harvest, from the middle of August. They use indigenous yeasts and the vines are only treated with small amounts of copper and sulphur according to the ecological management of the vineyards

Terrain

The estate is 3km from Ronda and 40km from the Mediterranean sea. It stands 700 meters high and is south facing and consists of clay/calcareous sand soil. This essentially clayey soil, with only 20% calcareous sand, is very beneficial for the vineyard due to its water retention capacity.

Tasting

This is a wine that at first taste is quite acidic until it is accompanied by food, it then evolves and lowers its acidity. It smells like pink grapefruit with some sulphides and minerals, and tastes like acid citric fruit. You could say that it confuses, with its characteristic rosé smell and white flavour. Its colour is salmon touching on orange…It is likable, also kind of peculiar, to discover although it does not cease to be complicated and with a high percentage of alcohol. After trying different options for pairing with food, we chose a pate of duck and cranberries, some Romani salad dressed with an original hot sea sauce and some Pil-pil prawns, which had added smoked paprika that, surprisingly, helped to reduce the acidity of the wine. We commented that it would also marry very well with Torta del Casar (creamy and strong cheese from Extremadura). For music, we prefer something French, so I suggested Les Negresses Vertes and their song ‘Hasta LLegar’, which suited the wine and the food. Through the generosity of a friend,

Carmen, we had the opportunity to taste and compare another white wine of red grapes, in this case a Garnacha de Montaña grape, and we discovered that even though it has the same elaboration process, this has nothing to do with the result, nor colour, or flavour.

Process

This wine Los Frutales Blanco from red grapes, is made with a traditional white wine process. A direct pressing of the red grape, to avoid the extraction of the colour, followed by a fermentation at low temperature (15º) and a short stay in French oak barrels. This method, known as Blanc de Noirs, is used in the production of classic French champagne with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier red grapes. There is also the Blanc de Blancs, which is more familiar to us. Both processing terms were previously used exclusively to refer to sparkling wines but nowadays their use also extends to still wines.

Curiosities

Did you know that the cause of the colour, body and structure in the wine are polyphenols? These are fould in the skin and seeds of the grape. A phenol is a molecule which formula is C6-H5-OH. Each variety has a polyphenolic composition, that is determined by genetics, but also influences by the type and composition of its soil. The nutrients of the soil, as well as its mineral composition, its inclinations, the altitude, depth of the soil, the capacity or not of water retention and biological richness, will have much to do with the composition of polyphenols in a given wine. Along with the alcohol and acidity, polyphenols are one of the fundamental cornerstones of wine. They play very diverse roles in plants defence against herbivores and microorganisms, attraction of pollinators, protection from solar rays or preservation in the face of adverse and conflicting weather conditions. The vine, especially the grape, synthesizes polyphenols in response to stress situations, such as the attack of a fungus, lack of water, ultraviolet radiation, temperature variations or strong winds. Winemaking, especially maceration, influence’s these substances and, therefore, the final result of the wine.

Exhibition - Miradas de al Andalus by Miguel Angel Lopez The exhibition at the Nerja Museum which will remain until June 30 in the Ana María Márquez exhibition hall, offers a tour through 34 paintings and 3 ceramics, through different architectural landscapes that evoke the Andalusian territory in the

past of the Iberian Peninsula, and by Morocco, as well as people and objects that evoke the way of life of both worlds. This is the second exhibition proposed by the Nerja cultural space in 2019, which

is included in an annual program that includes five in total. With 'Miradas de al-Andalus', the Nerja Museum intends to link the vestiges and memories of al-Andalus that remain permanent in the landscape and the idiosyncrasy of much of Spain, with those vestiges and ways of living that are still valid in Morocco and that, ultimately, is heir to the Andalusian past. This exhibition is not accidental, since it has the purpose of vindicating the medieval past of the locality with a current look, and to find again two Jaenans in Nerja, the geographer and writer Ibn Sacid, of the XIIIth century, who visited frequently Niriya , name of Nerja in Arabic, and to whom he dedicated a poem, and Miguel Ángel Expósito, an artist who has masterfully captured the magic of al-Andalus that still persists in North Africa and Spain. It is, therefore, a show where yesterday and today come together to show us that we are the result of a past that never disappears.

Fertility and food - factors to consider for conception Fertility refers to the preconception period of a reproductive-aged woman — 15 to 49 years old, according to the World Health Organization — during which she is trying to get pregnant. A couple is considered to experience infertility if after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse, no pregnancy results. Since fertility in women is known to decline steadily with age (with each month of menstruation, women lose a portion of their ovarian reserve and egg quality may decline, making it harder to conceive). However, infertility is not a woman’s disease. In about 35 percent of couples with infertility, male and female related factors are involved. The causes of infertility vary, and there is no one-sizefits-all solution.

Causes of Female Infertility Female infertility often reflects problems with ovulation that may be related to diseases or conditions affecting the female reproductive system, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, primary ovarian insufficiency, structural uterine abnormalities (such as a condition in which the uterus is shaped like a heart), blocked fallopian tubes, uterine fibroids, excess body weight and overactivity. Eating disorders, overactivity and stress can cause a condition known as 'hypothalamic amenorrhea' that often is associated with infertility. Also, conditions such as celiac disease that are left untreated can affect fertility.

Causes of Male Infertility According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, male infertility factors often are related to varicocele, a condition in which veins on a man’s testicle are too large and cause the testicle to overheat. This elevated temperature can affect the shape, movement and quantity of sperm. Other factors that can lead to male infertility include genetic conditions that affect sperm production, injury to the testicles and conditions such as cystic fibrosis.

Recommendations for Women Many fertility researchers have relied on data from the Nurses’ Health Study II, a prospective cohort study that began in 1989 and evaluated nearly 20,000 responses from registered nurses to a questionnaire on diet and lifestyle habits and reproductive outcomes.

essential for reproductive health. The Recommended Dietary Allowance for men is 11 milligrams per day, which • Greater consumption of complex, high- can be achieved through food sources fibre carbohydrates including dairy, some seafood and whole grains; more research is needed • Consumption of full-fat dairy products on supplemental dosages. rather than low-fat dairy foods • Greater plant protein consumption and lower animal protein consumption

• Greater consumption of non-heme iron foods from plant sources. Researchers found that women who followed these dietary recommendations had a 66 percent lower risk of ovulatory disorder infertility and a 27 percent lower risk of infertility due to other causes. Regarding women using ART procedures such as IVF, studies have demonstrated success in the use of both the Mediterranean diet and a “pro-fertility” diet. For example, a study published in 2018 found that consuming more produce, seafood and healthy fats (such as olive oil and nuts) and less red meat decreased time to conception and increased likelihood of pregnancy in those undergoing ART.

Recommendations for Men With fewer studies conducted on male fertility, more research is needed to confidently make recommendations for this population. However, a recent review found that “healthy”diets consistently improve semen quality across a range of populations.

Researchers found that a high fertility diet, or an eating style that promotes fertility, for women consisted of:

In particular, increasing consumption of produce, seafood, poultry, whole grains and low-fat dairy products while decreasing consumption of red and processed meats, foods and beverages with added sugars, and high-fat dairy products may positively affect semen quality.

• Low intake of trans fat and greater intake of monounsaturated fat

The trace mineral zinc receives widespread attention as a nutrient

Additional Considerations Other aspects of physical health, recreational behaviours and lifestyle can play a role in male and female fertility. Body weight: For people with overweight or obese BMIs, dietary interventions and physical activity helps to reduce risks associated with increased body mass and preconception health. For those with underweight BMIs, proper nutrition can play a part in improving fertility and enhancing the health of their future baby. Fitness: Aim for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week with two days of strength training. Alcohol, smoking and drug use: Men and women seeking improved fertility should abstain from smoking. It also is recommended to avoid alcohol or recreational drug use. Caffeine: Female patients should consume no more than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day, roughly the amount in a 12-ounce cup of coffee. Research is inconsistent regarding male fertility and caffeine. More research on the preconception period is needed to further identify the roles of nutrition and lifestyle habits, and specific recommendations likely will continue to evolve for both female and male fertility — as well as how to improve success rates of ART procedures. Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

Change is on the horizon and a spiritual revelation or attitude breakthrough occurs that propels you along a new path. Adventure, travel, and higher learning call to you. You are setting your sights on the future instead of worrying about the past, and setting those sights high. If not into a relationship you will see a surge of sensuous longing. Do not restrain yourself into your cocoon. This month, you are coming across as quite charming, but introspective nevertheless,. Work matters go especially well. Job seekers will find good prospects. Better inflow of income is guaranteed clubbed with a better career performance. Some unwanted expenditure related to medical issues is likely to bother your spirits. The chance for creative and romantic new beginnings arrives just in time to revitalize your outlook.

You are restless with routines, and tend to answer to your own internal rhythm rather than paying attention to society’s rhythms. Your hobbies can be out of the ordinary, and so can your relationships with children and lovers, depending on how this restlessness is affecting you. It’s an excellent period in your life for joining a group or association that helps you to feel part of a team. Your ability to understand and accept anything that is deep in meaning or significant is enhanced now. Any type of in-depth study is likely to go well. This period also indicates a real learning experience with someone with whom you can bounce ideas off and come to a better understanding of how you define yourself. Sexual opportunities are likely to abound, or your focus on one partner becomes more expansive, warm and intimate.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

Your sense of timing and balance is superb now, and your efficiency is improved many times over. Cleaning out closets, re-organizing the environment in which you live and work, and other such activities come to the fore. Others may turn to you for advice or recognize your competency and experience in a particular area of life. Look forward to what changes come your way just now along with taking a leap into the unknown.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

It’s a period conducive to turning dreams into reality, particularly creative ones. Your personality toughens up, but your powers of persuasion run high. Your tastes in romance, recreation, and the arts are slowly but surely refining and blossoming. Relationships continue to figure strongly in your priorities. You are finding more joy in others, and they are more responsive to your needs.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

Your career is receiving strong energy this month. It’s picking up pace, and professional matters become clearer and more straightforward. You are feeling re-motivated after some confusion and lack of enthusiasm in recent months. This could be a time of purging yourself of literal or psychic “junk”, as there is a sense that de-cluttering your life will be beneficial to your emotional well-being. 46 THE MARKET PLACE

It’s a time when exciting professional and travel opportunities could arise, seemingly out of the blue. Stimulating changes in the realms of friendships, group connections, and business plans are on the horizon. Love can be very romantic for you, but it can also be complicated or downright elusive! You may find yourself falling in love with someone unattainable or attached. The changes in professional sphere, began in the past, will proceed. Businessmen will expand the business, involving their partners or close acquaintances. You want to have fun, and you might find you’re pouring a lot of energy into your hobbies, children, and recreation in this month. Romance moves forward, and you’re ready to take the initiative when it comes to matters of the heart.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You are likely to derive much satisfaction from taking care of practical concerns in your life. This is a time of long-range planning that will bring you benefits down the road. Get your affairs in order, and invest in yourself! Your mood in love is mostly adventurous, and your charm is quite natural now. A more positive and forward-looking attitude wins you many admirers now.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

You would pursue your ambitions with renewed vigour and you would be able to meet a considerable amount of your pursuits. Legal and authoritative influences shall help you in your endeavours. For most of you who are already partnered, you are likely to find more joy in close relationships due to a more easygoing and tolerant attitude towards others and partnering in general.

Pippa’s Pawprints Spanish Dog Rescue ... and this is how it began. Edinburgh 2013. When my beloved, rescued cavalier, Sammy, died I was in pieces. The pain in my heart was as intense as it was losing my Dad whom I adored but somehow losing Sammy felt worse. I felt alone and in despair. I went for a walk by the narrow river, it was usually very peaceful there, I felt fragile, and prayed I wouldn’t meet anyone, because I wanted to allow the tears to trickle down my stained cheeks without embarrassment or shame or having to explain.

Carly and I had a good connection, a good working relationship and after many chats, we planned to continue working together to create a rescue group using our experience and network of fosterers and connections with other rescues. Dog Rescue. We were still in the planning stages when I had a message begging me to save a beautiful pit bull terrier who was due to be euthanised later that day. His owner didn’t want him anymore and the volunteers were upset because he was beautiful and didn’t deserve to be in there. It was a tense time. Pippa’s doesn’t have a shelter and most shelters are full to the brim. But... I said if I could be supported, I’d place him in residential kennels until we rehomed him. This is when Inger, another founder member, joined us. Luque was duly saved and is now living happily in the campo with a lovely family bear Marbella. Enjoying her experience helping to save Luque (now Duque), she wanted to join Carly and I to create Pippa’s Pawprints SDR and so we did! We have our registration now and we opened our little charity shop in Calle Antonio

Jimenez no 4B. Our shop has lovely gifts and our new range of home-made natural dog treats are very popular. We are open Mon Wed Fri 10.30-2.30 but would like to open every day and are looking for volunteers to man the shop. Our aim with Pippa’s is to support other rescues by offering financial help towards medical expenses, to help find foster homes and forever homes. We have a wide network in Spain and have helped rehome dogs to Finland, Sweden, Holland, England and many to my home town, Edinburgh. It’s wonderful to meet up with the dogs there. Incidentally, I’m still in touch with all Coffia’s puppies’ families – the pups are 4 years old now. Having experienced the benefits of holding Sammy’s memorial service, I decided to train as a Funeral Celebrant and am now a member of the Fellowship of Professional Celebrants.

I wanted to train so that I can specialise in animal funeral/memorial services to offer compassion, sympathy and comfort to those who have experienced a great sense of loss when their beloved pet crosses Rainbow Bridge. I know how much it helped me having Sammy’s memorial. I feel so privileged being involved in the world of animal rescue, working with such great people, my co-founders, Carly and Inger, our stunning volunteers, Susan Geraldine Locke Dyde, Christine Paterson, Bernadette Murphy, Rosealeen Cairney, Hazel Martin to name a few but not forgetting our wonderful fosterers without whose support rescue groups couldn’t function. I admire my associates in animal rescue and feel comforted that we all work together with the same aim – to rescue, nurture and rehome animals with love.

POPPY In a tale you’ve unfortunately heard before the Costa Animal Society (CAS) was contacted when three small puppies were found in a box left by a public bin. CAS shop volunteer Carol sprang into action and took the unfortunate waifs home to begin showing them with the love they deserve and to help them learn to find trust and comfort with human companions. TAIL Torrox

Any owner knows that tic bites will cause distress and the pet will scratch madly, and most know that tics live in tall grasses and that dogs running through such terrain are likely to collect them on their coats as they brush through. Do not just pull tics out without great care or the use of a special tool as the head breaks off and remains attached to the skin. Leish however is caused by a sandfly bite in the late afternoon/early evening

Now that summer is well and truly with us maybe it's worth a reminder to check that all preventative measures have been taken to protect your dogs. Whether they be sofa pets or energetic larger breeds they all need protecting against a number of possible insect bites that can cause infections. so it may be wise to keep your dog indoors from that time. Fleas, who lay their eggs in the dogs coat, are something else to keep particular attention focused towards. By this time of the year we would hope that you have visited your vet for your pet's up to date treatment and that must be refreshed frequently. On your visit you can discuss the merits of “spot” treatment or an impregnated collar.

We are Torrox Animal Internation League (TAIL), a local charity/ refuge set in Torrox. Our goals are to rescue and rehome abandoned and maltreated dogs and work to educate local community about dog care and neutering. With new cases of animal abandonment every week, we need your help to keep on pursuing these goals. Please subscribe to our one euro campaign! The shops are open Mon-Sat 10am-2pm. The shelter is open Tues-Sun 11am-2pm and closed all day Monday. Both accept donations of bric-a-brac, clothing etc and the Costa del Oro shop has furniture too. Tel: (0034) 629501173

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

was once a sleepy fishing village but now the town has a population of over 21,000. The Balcón de Europa is a magnificent promenade that was made famous by King Alfonso XII , who’s statue now takes pride of place at the far end. Close by is the 17th century Church of El Salvador, and the beautiful gardens of Capistrano Playa. There are many beaches to be found either side and in front of the town, including Burriana with its numerous cafés and restaurants. Here too, you can take advantage of the water sports on offer, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. Just outside Nerja on the coast road towards Maro is a very impressive aquaduct which used to supply the local sugar factory.

Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
