Busted - 5,300 packets of contraband cigarettes from Russia intercepted at Malaga Airport

The five Russians arrived on a flight from Moscow with their suitcases full of cigarettes. They are accused of the crime of trafficking contraband goods, noted the Guardia Civil in a statement, and the 5,300 packets of different Russian brands closed with Russian seals have been confiscated by customs at the airport.

Axarquia hosted mental health conference 100 health and education professionals attended a children's mental health conference in the Axarquia last month. The event looked at ways to help children and adolescents from the region and was hosted by the Mental Health Clinical Management Unit. Groups were separated into four tables where each one dicussed a particular theme related to mental health, such as: drug consumption, difficulties in adolescence and ensuring a good primary education.

to the beaches. The beaches it was reported now have adapted ramps with a maximum of 8 degrees of inclination, railing and adapted access signs. With these extra features barriers are broken so that all people can enjoy the beauty of the beaches and coasts in our area.

More than 40 aircraft will participate in the 2nd Torre Del Mar International Air Show.

Nerja among the 20 most popular destinations according to Trip Advisor

Trip Advisor rentals portal has made a selection of the 20 most popular destinations to enjoy this summer based on the number of bookings made. In Nerja during the summer you do not have to go far to find a beautiful beach with glorious sunshine, a destination people want to flock to in order to take a well deserved rest. Nerja occupies 14th position amongst the 20 most popular destinations. Nerja is much more than the place where "Verano Azul", the popular TV soap was set. Besides it's beaches, it is much more tranquil than other areas of the Costa del Sol and a very family friendly resort with nice places to eat and drink. People are attracted to the resort to stroll on the Balcon de Europa and view our part of the Mediterranean coastline in all it's splendour.

New European Commission rules mean end to roaming charges

Movistar put a stop to it's roaming charges on the 15th June to meet the deadline set by the European Commission. This means that customers who travel to other EU member states will not have roaming charges applied for calls, texts or using the internet with their mobile phone. Vodafone, Orange and other operators also made moves to meet the deadline.

The Mayor of Velez Malaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer together with the Councillor for Tourism, Deputy Mayor and promoter for the Air Show Pablo Gonzalez, reported on the details of the shows that can be seen on the beaches of Torre del Mar between the 28th and 30th July. The Mayor commented that last years event was a huge success, bringing together 250,000 people who watched the spectacular acrobatics performed by the various planes. This year the number of aeroplanes and pilots will increase. The countries involved in participating are: France, Italy, UK, Turkey, Belgium and Spain. This show puts Torre del Mar on the map and contributes to enhance tourism for the area. Hotel occupancy last year was 100% full and the show had a massive economic impact on the area to the amount of 5 million euros. This years show will feature a flight demonstration group from Turkey, called the Turkish stars, they have eight aircraft and it will be the first time they have been seen in Spain. The Friday and Saturday will be the training days and Sunday will be the actual festival.

Missing tourist found by motorway in Nerja An 82 year old British tourist called Brian Hayes was found dehydrated and disorientated on the side of the motorway in Nerja last month. After 30 hours of searching the Guardia Civil located the man at km295 of the motorway near the Maro exit, close to the Nerja Caves. Mr Hayes was renting an apartment in the Capistrano area in Nerja and went to put his rubbish out on a Saturday and did not return. His daughter, Amanda Wilkins who was on holiday with her father and their family put out the warning in Nerja in order to find her father. It is thought that Mr Hayes suffered a fall that left him stuck. He was taken to hospital to be checked over and has made a full recovery.

W

hen I told people I was going to Formentera many of them thought it was an island in the Canary Islands, I had to explain that this little gem of an island was off the coast of Ibiza in the Balearics. This beautiful island of only 30 square miles is, in my eyes, the closest place you will get to the Carribbean without actually having to cross the Atlantic. The sky is blue, the sand is fine and white and the water so crystal clear. Much of the shoreline is protected and dedicated a natural park zone. It is a beach lovers paradise and with only an hour and 20 minutes flight from Malaga airport, it is literally a stones throw away for residents that live here. The island is an idyllic place if you love to relax on a beach and enjoy everything Italian.... Hang on, I hear you say, Italian? Well, while the island is 600 miles away from Italy, in the summer months it is awash with Italians and Italian culture. Italians seem to have embraced the island and claimed it as their favourite holiday destination. Which is no bad thing! Italians are renowned for their delicious food, fine dining and quality merchandise and will not accept anything less. Formentera as a result has an air of exclusivity about the place, so don't go there expecting cheap prices because it

is not that sort of destination. The island exudes class but it also has a relaxed, chilled out tranquil atmosphere, without the party, celebrity culture of nearby Ibiza. There are major restrictions on night life in Formentera, limiting how late music can be played at night, etc. Like many tourist destinations, Formentera is full in the warm summer months, the population expanding from 12,500 local inhabitants to over 45,000 in August. 70% of the island is protected from development - any building taking place must only be constructed on the site of an existing building. There is also a restriction on the number of floors hotels can have, which keeps buildings to just 4 floors. The hotel manager where I stayed confirmed that there had not been any new developments for 35 years. She confirmed, "We do not want to become like Ibiza." The island is mostly sandy and rocky, with a good area that is salt flats. The climate is very dry and is well suited to the bright green lizards that cover the parched landscape, hiding behind rocks and in crevices. The towns on Formentera are typically Mediterranean pueblos but much of the natural sandy/pink stone has been used in building. There are remote, unexplored lighthouses and people getting from A to B on pushbikes or mopeds. But the real attraction of Formentera are certainly the beaches. We visited Playa de Migjorn, a beach on the Southern side of the island or nicknamed "lucky beach". So called because of a seaside restaurant with the same name that served homemade pasta, bresaola, aperitivi and great music. You really are "lucky" and having the most perfect day if you ever get to visit ! I stayed in Es Pujols, a small family friendly resort on the Northern side of the island, a bus ride away from the Port town of La Savina. Es Pujols has a great ambience both day and night, again you could not help but notice the very Italian

fused with Spanish feel about the place. The resort is small and cosy, filled with little shops and lovely restaurants. The beach was heavenly with lovely sand and clear water but also rocky areas which my son loved to explore with his fishing net in hand. One morning we had an early start, to take a walk along the coastline to Playa de Illetes. Much of the way you can meander along decked walkways that have been constructed to keep people from walking on the protected sand dune areas of the coast. We reached Playa de Illetes, which is a flat expanse of beach, perfect for sunbathers and families with children. The sea is generally flat and underfoot the sand is smooth and comfortable for the feet. I have never known anything like the water in Formentera. It is luminous, very much like walking through liquid air. Our walk up to Illetes revealled something we were not aware of, many of the beaches are nudist friendly and many of the sun worshippers wore nothing! With two children in tow, as you can imagine, we experienced plenty of comments and questions about the subject! We explored the beach and wandered the shores of the sea, while trying to avoid the huge amount of seaweed in some areas. Although this stuff does not feel very nice between your toes, it is actually a sea grass called Posidonia which has been around for at least 100,000 years. In 1999 it was protected by UNESCO as it only grows in the Mediterranean and one square metre of the stuff gives off more oxygen than one square metre of the amazon rainforest. The largest concentration of it is right there between Ibiza and Formentera. There are some great beach bars serving freshly caught fish, beautiful cocktails, champagne, speciality paellas etc... although do not expect your typical chiringuito that you get in Malaga province. The beach bars we experienced were a great deal more salubrious, more like fine dining but along with that came the significantly higher prices. We tried a bar called Tanga on Playa de Illetes, which was wonderful, if a little pricey. We also booked a special meal at a beach restaurant in Es Pujols called Chezz Gerdi, this place was amazing but again the prices were rather high. But you could not fault the gorgeous decor, the cool chillout zone with curved leather covered outdoor sofas, the view which was stunning looking out on to the Mediterranean across to Ibiza and both the staff and food were top quality. But you probably would not be able to dine here every night of the week! (sadly). We loved our little holiday on this island and would definitely make a return trip. If you want a super relaxed place to chill out with an even slower pace of life, beautiful beaches, Italian mixed with Spanish culture and clear sparkling sea water , then this place will be a hit with you - just save a little before you go!!. We flew to Ibiza from Malaga with Ryan Air - prices were around 100 euros. A ferry from Ibiza Port to Formentera costs around 40 euros return depending on the season. The Hotel we stayed in was Sa Volta in Es Pujols and was 120 euros per room per night including breakfast.

Reforming an Old Apartment - Where to Start? You have bought an old apartment that is a bit run down and needs a complete overhaul, but you don’t know where to start! Don’t worry, we will explain the steps that you should take. It is really important to firstly source a good professional that can advise on materials, the layout of the apartment and original elements that you can perhaps leave. If you don’t take advice then often your investment could end up looking even more like a ruin... Layout The first step is to plan the layout of the apartment. Now is the time to think about making any changes to the original plan of the property and adapt it to your own personal needs. Perhaps you need more rooms or on the contrary, fewer rooms to make your living space more open plan, such as a kitchen that combines with a living room. This is the moment when you need to sit down with an architect or an experienced builder in order to plan each room of the home.

Electrical Installation The second step is to take into account the lighting: an old house often presents

many electrical problems because the original electrics could be very old and not adapted to the needs of today’s life. You will have to analyse with an electrician what your needs are and modify the entire system but it will be worth it. Try to include in your system a way that allows you to save energy. Your electrician can advise you on this.

Insulation One of the most important steps of a reform is insulating the property. So choosing the right windows to replace the old single glazed ones with more modern ones that will keep out the cold and noise is a really excellent investment. Another problem with old buildings is the damp from moisture on the walls, ceilings and floors. You need to check everything well with builders and plumbers. Make sure the plumbing system is water tight and there is no rising damp. These problems need repairing before you decide on what type of floor you require, such as tiles, parquet, wood etc. Then you can move 16 THE MARKET PLACE

on to the more aesthetic part of the reform such as deciding on what type of kitchens and bathrooms you will have and what colours to decorate your home.

Car News

by Martin Ward

First Driving Impressions – Suzuki Swift, European Press Event, South of France. We flew from Farnborough into Nice airport, walked over to the car park to be met by long lines of Suzuki Swifts. They said any colour you want, so long as it’s red.

W

e put our bags in the relatively large boot, and then put our jackets on the back seat. Now this procedure could prove difficult for some, as the rear door handle is well hidden. I can just imagine going to pick up your granny, and she tries to get in the back. After a few minutes she will be knocking on the front windows to ask you to let her in. But it is clever design and engineering, and Suzuki say they wanted to make it look more sporty, and less like a five-door. This new car will only be available as five-door, no three-doors will be built any more. The first Swift was launched in Europe in 1983, but it was in 2004 that the current shape car was launched to much acclaim, with its distinctive styling. Then in 2010 the second generation was introduced, and now this allnew third generation. Over 5 million Swifts have been sold globally with over 1 million of those given homes in Europe, and 127,000 in the UK. Four engines were made available when it arrived in the UK last month: 1.2 Dualjet, 1.2 Dualjet SHVS 4X4, 1.0 Boosterjet SHVS and 1.0 Boosterjet. The SHVS is a mild-hybrid that has an extra battery, and although does not directly power the car on electric alone, the extra power from the battery is used for acceleration, which reduces the need on the petrol engine, so consequently reduces fuel consumption. On the launch in France Suzuki only had one engine to drive, the 1.0 Boosterjet with SHVS which produces 111ps and goes from 0-62mph in 10.6 seconds. It did feel a lively little thing, not lacking in power at all. This engine has a C02 emissions figure of 97g/km. We took this Swift on a variety of roads, including motorways where it sat there as good as gold at the French speed limit of 130kph. It was not buffeted about, and felt so safe and solid. Then up into the hills above Nice, and it went up and down those hills with no effort at all. There was enough power to get up, and enough braking power to get back down the steep inclines. This new Swift really is new, as it is built on a new platform, the same as is used on the Baleno and the recently introduced Ignis. This new platform is a highly rigid frame that enhances collision safety and has a continuous, smooth and curving form that better helps disperse energy. This has led to a reduction in reinforcements, making the body lighter than the current Swift, and this greatly 20 THE MARKET PLACE

contributes to lowering fuel consumption. The new Swift is 10mm shorter, but the wheelbase is 20mm longer. It is 40mm wider and 10mm lower, so does look more in proportion than the outgoing model, and a good looking car it is too. The whole of the car gets a major make-over, and you cant really say that one particular part has changed more than another, but the front-end treatment is probably the most dramatic. The new large grille is very impressive and looks very bold and distinctive. But then the side profile has also changed, almost beyond recognition with the hidden handles and improved side swage-lines. But Suzuki have kept the ‘wrap-around’ windscreen that has become part of the Swifts DNA and looks as good today as it did when the car was first launched. As you get into the car, it is immediately obvious that the interior designers have thrown out every bit of the current car, and started again from fresh. It is such a huge improvement and there has been a lot of time and money spent in the cabin. The look, touch and feel is just so much better including the materials used. The layout of the dash and the controls, switches, dials and buttons are a huge step forward, it has the feel of a more premium car. Back out on the road the new Swift felt so agile and light, yet felt solid and safe. Going around some of the fairly scary corners it had precise handling and felt so stable. It really is a great little car - well, not so little car, to drive, and so much fun. From the hills, we then went to our overnight hotel location in Monaco. This small principality is so crowded with tall apartments, and building never stops there, but it is where the rich and famous like to own an address, mainly for financial reasons, and not because it is a nice place to live. After the evening meal I had a walk around the Marina, and out of all the boats and huge multi-million pound/dollar/euro yachts, only a handful had anyone aboard. The few that did attracted a small crowd on the dockside to view these very rich people and what they were doing aboard their very expensive gin-palaces. Living on one of these boats didn’t seem very private, or even safe. And every time we saw one of the inhabitants, it was almost like a visit to the zoo to see the very rare Pandas. People on the quayside would say, ‘oh look, look, look, quickly, here they come out again, and look, one of them is eating an orange, and look, the other one is having a cup of coffee’ – the onlookers taking photographs of these poor, rich people going about their normal business, but in full view of anyone who wanted to watch. Very odd. No prices were available for the Swift, but is expected to be priced very sensibly and competitively, which is Suzuki’s normal way of doing business, and a way that has been very successful for them. The new Swift is a good looking hatch that has a high level of quality, nice economical petrol engines, is fun and safe to drive and will no doubt be well-priced, affordable to buy and affordable to run.

Alhaurin Golf

Golfer's in the Axarquia region are very fortunate to have two excellent - and different - golfing challenges on their doorstep in the form of Añoreta and Baviera Golf courses. Although the majority of local players tend to play much of their golf on these two courses, it's often nice to try something a bit different - and Alhaurin Golf, in it's beautiful mountain setting and just an hour's drive from Nerja, fits the bill nicely. Market Place Magazine spoke with Samuel Cadenas, Alhaurin Golf's recently appointed Manager of Golf, to find out what the course has to offer... an Academy run by Jose Cadenas, and a pitch and putt course, one of the best in the region. There's a restaurant and a great hotel with 38 comfortable rooms. You are guaranteed a great experience when you spend time here, with our lovely team that make you feel like you are at home.

Why should golfers from the Axarquia region play at Alhaurin?

Sam, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am from Benagalbon, a nice little village close to Añoreta Golf. I have been playing golf since 1992 and I have a current handicap of 2. Aside from playing golf I am a qualified Rules Official.

I would definitely say that all golfers have to play our golf course because they will find 18 different holes, each different to the previous one. Later you can enjoy a snack and a cold beer on our nice terrace - what better way to spend your precious leisure time? Best of all, this experience comes at a very competitive price and only around one hour from Nerja.

You have a well stocked pro shop - what brands does it sell?

Our main brands are Calvin Klein, Puma, Under Armour, Callaway and Foot Joy.

What is your opinion on custom club fitting compared to buying 'off the shelf'?

Well, it all depends on the amount of time you spend playing and level of your golf. For example, if you are a beginner, I advise to buy off the shelf. You are starting to create a swing and this should be your priority. Once you have reached a good level, a custom fitting session should be the best way to bring your score down. But remember, golf is 90% in your mind, as Jack NIcklaus said.

Do you offer special deals for societies and large groups?

Yes, of course. Feel free to contact me through director@alhauringolf.com and I will give the best price on the Costa del Sol.

Who do you think will win this month's British Open at Royal Birkdale?

Rickie Fowler - he deserves it!!! He almost did it in the last major and he is a Cobra Puma Golf Player, my previous company. Also, he represents what and where golf needs to be in the coming years.

My first job in the golf industry was at Añoreta Golf and I was there until November 2015, when I decided to leave the company and pursue different interests within the golfing industry. I went to work at Cobra Puma Golf as a Field Account Executive. I was there until recently when Alhaurin Golf offered me the position of Golf Manager - a new, exciting opportunity in my professional career!

What are your initial targets/goals as new director of golf at Alhaurin?

My main target here is promote Alhaurin Golf as a great all round leisure facility, where visitors can relax and enjoy the time they spend.

Tell us more about the course and facilities? The course was designed by Severiano Ballesteros in 1993 and it is an enjoyable golf course with some challenge holes, and with the best views of the Costa del Sol. We also have 22 THE MARKET PLACE

From Nerja to Manilva, the people of Malaga take to the streets to accompany the Patron Saint of sailors, because the festival of the Virgin of Carmen is the day of the working classes, of the families that have grown and aged by that sea which bathes the shores of Malaga and has provided them with sustenance for their families. weekend beach festival at the Playa de Poniente, Torre del Mar on the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th July In just three years, Torre del Mar’s Weekend Beach Festival has put itself on the map of major Spanish music festivals, thanks to its line-up which includes the best current Spanish bands and artists and a good representation of the leading international DJs. Its commitment to a variety of styles, its perfect location (in the heart of the Costa del Sol) and its clear differentiation by providing extra activities such as the Fiesta de Bienvenida (Welcome Party), Daytime Concerts, Competitions and great infrastructure where the camping zone is next to the concert ground and the beach itself, mean the festival offers its visitors spectacular features. Nada Surf, Estopa, Kase. O, Residente, Amparanoia, The Prodigy and Paco Osuna, among others, complete an artistic line-up that is still being expanded. The DJ and producer Chris Liebing will also be there - one of the most versatile DJs in the world of electronica.

6 Fresh Summer Party Ideas If you’re anything like us, you love a good summer barbecue. It just wouldn’t be a weekend summer party without grilled meat (and meat alternatives), oodles of potato salad, sliced watermelon and sending your guests off on another ice run.

W

e’re growing a little tired of the hot-dog-andplastic-wine-cup party circuit. We’re entering the hottest part of the year and with that can often come a summer-party faux pas! That’s why we’ve put together a few tips for a midsummer refresh: In other words, easy new ways to entertain. Read on to see the swaps we’re betting will make your summer shindig an affair to remember. THE OLD WAY: Chips and Salsa THE NEW WAY: Crostini and Crab Dip Yes, we agree, the old crowd-pleasing standby is delicious (and has saved us in a party pinch many a time). But this insanely cheesy and satisfying crab and artichoke dip really ups the ante and is easy to make. Go to: www.hostthetoast.com for the recipe and search: cheesy crab and artichoke dip. Not a seafood fan? Try googling alternative dips before just buying the usual Mercadona salsa. THE OLD WAY: Remove Your Shoes THE NEW WAY: Slip into Slippers We get it: A shoe-free house means no dirt, grass clippings or other nasties get on your cream-coloured carpets. But wait a sec: Have you seen your neighbour’s toes lately? Barefoot outside is one thing, but inside it can be just terribly unsightly. Set up a basket of lightweight slippers in your entrance hall (you can buy some inexpensive ones in the local Chinese shop) and encourage guests to help themselves to a pair. Your rugs will stay clean, and no one will be subjected to Cousin Frank’s cracked heels. THE OLD WAY: Pre-mixed Cocktails THE NEW WAY: Chilled Wine, Straight Up Now that everyone is noshing happily on fancy appetizers, what hostess wants to spend the rest of the evening playing bartender? Forgo the too-fancy cocktails and serve chilled wine instead. Less time spent with the blender means more time to catch up with your friends. But if you’re insistent, google the Ultimate Summer Cocktail Guide! THE OLD WAY: The Standard Buffet Table THE NEW WAY: Gourmet Goodies Everywhere Who wants to elbow their way to the good stuff along with everyone else? Make 26 THE MARKET PLACE

use of your space and spread out the snacks: Designate one side table for savoury appetizers, another for the cheese spread, another for salads. Fling open the doors and use your terrace and garden too, just make sure there is enough shade if the sun is still hot. This gets people moving around—and prevents awkward buffet-line small talk. THE OLD WAY: Assigned Seating THE NEW WAY: Scattered Floor Pillows You’ve already covered every flat surface with casseroles and crudités. Skip the dining-room affair (save place settings for autumn and winter) and embrace the boho vibe. Invite guests to grab a pillow and take a seat on the floor with their plate and drink. When they feel more laid-back, your party will follow suit!! THE OLD WAY: An elaborate dessert THE NEW WAY: A Take-Home Treat Ditch the complicated cakes and parfaits in favour of a guaranteed delight: the world’s easiest ice-cream sandwiches. Made with storebought haagan daas or ben & jerry's tubs of ice cream and cookies, all you need is a big knife and a moment to assemble. (Use your knife to cut right into the tub so it slices in circles and then pop in between 2 cookies - yum!) For guests who didn’t save room for sweets, wrap this no-fuss treat in a piece of waxed paper, then drop it into a plastic bag to go. They’ll thank you later.

Manish's Zodiac predictions - July Manish Kumar Arora, K.P. Astrologer, Numerologist, Tarot Card Reader & Vastu Consultant Facebook: manishastroconsultant email: manish@manishastrologer.com

Aries ( 21 March – 19 April )

Libra ( 23 September – 22 October )

Taurus ( 20 April – 20 May )

Scorpio ( 23 October – 21 November )

You can come up with new goals for yourself, and put emphasis on your career and having more success. You do your best thinking when you’re on your own and not being bothered by anyone. The more success you experience, the more energy you feel you have. You would prefer to tackle mental tasks by yourself and work in the background. You may find you have a stronger drive for work, much stronger than usual. You can focus on tasks and have the energy to get them done. You may work closely with someone who will help you to advance in your career. You may find love and build a loving relationship with someone who could be a long-term committed partner for you. It’s a great opportunity to expand and learn.

Gemini ( 21 May – 20 June)

You have energy to work hard toward the goals you have, are disciplined and focused, and take the slow, steady approach. You know that you’ll get there eventually. You can focus on the direction your life is taking, and see if you need to shift course at all. You may find love and build a loving relationship with someone who could be a long-term committed partner for you.

Cancer ( 21 June – 22 July )

It is a positive time for you to make more money or to run into a great financial opportunity or offer. This is the time for you to receive plenty of praise and recognition for your hard work. You would also be the centre of attention so people will be focusing on your personal wants and needs. You may also see a surge in your sex drive.

Leo ( 23 July – 22 August )

You seem to have more depth than usual, and you think more about life questions. You want to know more about subjects and people, and dig deeper into them. You have less patience for superficiality and want to be more intimate. You need to spread your boundaries beyond your own friends as you never know what information or connections you may gain by going outside the box.

Virgo ( 23 August – 22 September )

You may see more money or an increase of tasks and projects that could bring you more financial security or financial opportunities in your direction. If single, you can meet someone through your or their career, through a parent, boss, or mentor, or who is much older than you. If you’re in a relationship, you’re less affectionate but more responsible. 28 THE MARKET PLACE

Your energy may shift towards being focused on more serious aspects of life. Forging deeper emotional connections may be more important to you now. Your sex drive will also likely increase too, though you may have to repress that. It can be a good period for starting a new exercise routine or diet, and your energy overall may be higher. You feel most like yourself when you’re in a one-on-one setting, with people that you’re close to, or doing something with a partner. If you’re single, you may hate it even more now and try to find someone fast. You’re commitmentminded and want to be dedicated to someone. Friendships and finances seem to be looking positive for you. Your knowledge will grow and it’s time to get to learn new things.

Sagittarius ( 22 November -21 December )

You’re more comfortable in the spotlight, and are more willing to chase after what you want. You feel good about yourself, have a positive outlook on life and your optimistic attitude will help you keep going, no matter what is happening in your life. You may also be open to network and connect with others who may possibly bring you a job offer or opportunity.

Capricorn ( 22 December – 19 January )

You think bigger and want to learn more about things you know nothing about. You may be more sensitive about your beliefs than usual. In public, you may seem more emotional to others, and are especially sensitive to the way you’re perceived. It will also be a time for you to really look over how to get ahead with your finances by having others help you or bring opportunities for you.

Aquarius ( 20 January – 18 February )

You want to embrace what makes you a unique person, and be an individual. You may want to do something outside of your comfort zone, and feel a little rebellious. You’re focused on your future, can come up with a new dream for yourself or accomplish a dream, and aren’t open with your emotions. This is a good time to eliminate things in your life that are keeping you unhealthy.

Pisces ( 19 February – 20 March )

Your hopes, dreams, and wishes for your future may become prominent, and you do whatever you have to in order to see them realized. You’re more open to people who are radically different than you are, and make friends with people you wouldn’t normally give much attention to. You can also become wrapped up in a cause and try to do something good for the world.

Love your life more with advice on how to lead a healthy lifestyle Your brain actually eats itself when it's tired

5 Questions about Laser Hair Removal Do you wish your skin could have that ohso-silky feeling all year-round and not just on the day you shave? Laser hair removal could be the answer.

Sleep deprivation actually causes the brain to feed off neurons and synaptic connections, a new study published in the Journal of Neuroscience says. In other words, when you don’t get enough sleep, your brain starts to eat itself. Yum. Neuroscientist Michele Bellesi, from the Marche Polytechnic University in Italy, led a study examining the brain’s response to poor sleep habits using well-rested and overtired mice. Groups of mice in the study were given varying amounts of sleep, ranging from a solid eight hours to being forced to stay awake for five straight days. During sleep, glial cells, or astrocytes, clear the brain of synapses to rejuvenate the brain. Another cell is also at work when you’re snoozing. The microglial cell destroys old and worn out cells via a process called phagocytosis. These processes have a positive effect while you sleep, rewiring and replenishing the brain for the next day. However, when you stay awake, the cells actually go into overdrive and start hurting the brain instead. The study found that sleep-deprived mice had more active astrocytes than well-rested mice, which means the brain appeared to begin eating itself, US News reported. “We show for the first time that portions of synapses are literally eaten by astrocytes because of sleep loss,” Bellesi says. “But it may cause harm in the long term, and could explain why a chronic lack of sleep puts people at risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders.” A scary 40 percent of Americans sleep six hours or less a day, according to the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. That means that 41 million adult brains in the US alone are potentially gobbling themselves up.

How does laser hair removal actually work? With lighter skin types, a cosmetic medical-grade laser transmits a concentrated beam of light directly into the pigment of your hair follicles. With darker skins, the laser is attracted to the blood supply of the hair follicle. The laser then destroys and stunts the hair growth with both modalities. Don’t let the term ‘laser’ freak you out – the treatment is safe, fast and effective in the removal of excessive or unwanted hair. FYI, laser is actually an acronym. It stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Is IPL the same as laser hair removal? This is one of the biggest misconceptions in the industry: IPL (Intense Pulse Light) is not the same as laser hair removal. The biggest difference is that IPL devices do not use laser and therefore cannot effectively target the deeper hair follicles or be adjusted to suit specific skin tones, which can increase risk in burns for darker skin types. Lasers utilise one wavelength to selectively treat the targeted chromophore (dark matter), without harming the surrounding tissue. How do I know a clinic is safe? A safe laser hair removal clinic will offer clients complimentary consultations with a trained laser technician to assess the skin before treatments commence.

The laser technician will also provide advice on how to prepare the skin for optimal results before treatment, as well as correctly advise on how to deal with any post-treatment discomfort that may occur. Clinics should only use medicalgrade laser equipment with Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approval and operated exclusively by trained technicians. How do I know my laser technician is highly qualified? You wouldn’t let a GP operate on you as a surgeon, so why would you want a beauty therapist performing laser hair removal treatments on your skin? Laser technicians should be just that, qualified for the job and hold a Class IV in Laser Hair Removal. Is laser hair removal painful? Laser hair removal feels like a flicking or pinching sensation, with a little bit of added heat. It’s designed to be a relatively comfortable treatment. After each treatment, the hair becomes lighter or thinner and discomfort subsides. Super sensitive? You could use numbing gel to make treatment more Dentis bearable. t

If a glass of white wine is your go-to, then you may want to take a look in the mirror - literally. A new study by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology has found links between your favourite plonk and rosacea - a skin inflammation, which increases redness around the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin. The sample of 83,000 women across the US documented their drinking habits over a 14-year period, and those who drank between one and three glasses of the grape each month were found to have a 14 percent higher risk of developing the skin condition, while women drinking five glasses of white wine each day, had their risk factor jump up to 49 percent. Community Policing

by Mick Stockdale

We have had in our hands the best way to fight against the recent threats since 1829, when Sir Robert Peel wrote his Principles of modern police, the guideline of the London Metropolitan Police. In one of them we can read: “ The police are the public and the public are the police”. This sentence implies the essence of what the police and the public role should be in order to improve not only the communities safety, but also the citizens’ quality of life, which is the first and last aim of the police work. It is a proactive way of policing, in which community police officers work closely with the community they serve, by taking part in all the affairs that affect the normal life of the neighbours. Not only those related to the security directly, but in all the activities a community develops. Charity and social programs and events, infrastructures, education, etc. Here in Spain, there is an expression which comprises all this police philosophy, and it is: “ Hacer Iglesia”, in English “ To make church”. And it means no more no less than to gain people’s trust by listening to their concerns with interest, giving to them useful advice and taking part in all the society affairs, as a priest makes in his daily work. The problems to implement such a way of policing are much more advanced, and countries such as The United

States and UK know them pretty well. They have tried to implement it over a long time and with little success, as it needs the whole society involvement, something that rarely happens. More legal protection for police officers, more investment in educational programs, more interest from politicians and local governments are needed if we want to prevent and fight efficiently against threats such as radicalization, terrorism, new technology crimes, gender violence… All these new threats are happening in a very close enviroment (a house room, a person with a smartphone). So, traditional ways of policing are far from them. But, is this way of policing enough? Unfortunately not. And we have seen some examples of it in the news recently. Some citizens reported to the police in the UK about stranger behaviours of some muslim neighbours. But police couldn’t do anything to avoid them killing a lot of innocent people. How can the police follow more than a thousand possible terrorists 24/7? The answer, dear readers is in the new technology and AI. Nowadays, this technology is available and not very expensive, so the

only thing it needs is to be adapted to the police and in public spaces. Do you know that there are cameras on our roads which detect if you are using your mobile phone or wearing a safety belt? What if these cameras and the body cams that a lot of police officers are using currently in some countries could recognize potential terrorists, recorded by the police beforehand? Ladies and gentlemen, this is not science fiction, it is being developed in the United States by the hand of the Company Taser, the one that makes the electric pistols. So, only by combining both community policing and new technologies we will be able to prevent and fight against these threats and finally to live in peace. Well, that is my vision of community policing. The local crime situation this month has seen various house burglaries and a number of street robberies. So take note of any strange vehicles or people around your homes and make sure you only have on you what you need for the day and leave your valuables at home secure.

Embrace the Exotic with these Funky Fruits Beyond common apples and oranges, there’s a whole world of weird and wonderful fruits to explore.

E

xotic and unique-looking produce is mostly native to tropical and sub-tropical regions of places such as Southeast Asia, New Zealand and South America, but now it is grown in warm regions of other countries, too, including Spain. While you might find some of these fresh fruits in your regular supermarket on occasion, they’re more widely available at Asian, Latin and gourmet supermarkets, or from online specialty produce purveyors. Growing seasons vary by location and fruit, with some growing year-round in temperate or tropical climates. Canned, jarred and dried fruits are available year-round, as are products made from these fruits, such as jellies and jams. Like other fruits, exotic options are typically good sources of vitamins A and C, potassium and fibre. Inside and out, their vivid colours, varying textures and sweet to tart tastes may be a pleasant surprise! Their curious appearance may be one reason why specialty fruits are among six of the top 10 fastest growing categories in supermarkets, according to a 2015 study. A previous report found that sales of fresh global and exotic items grew 9 percent in 2014. That’s not surprising, given the culinary trend of fusion cuisine and a desire to eat healthier. Restaurant chefs are looking for ways to infuse unique and unexpected flavours into their dishes — and once chefs jump on a trend, consumers typically follow. Showcasing exotic fruits on television cooking shows also has helped introduce them more broadly to audiences who might otherwise never know what a dragon fruit looks like, for example. Travelling is another way consumers become familiar with foreign fruits; once they try it on holiday, they may look for the fruit upon returning home. It’s hard to remember, but mangoes and kiwis once were considered “exotic” and now they’re everyday staples in many people’s shopping trolleys.

Finger Lime Not a true lime, yet a member of the citrus family, finger limes are native to Australia and also are known as "caviar limes." Filled with juicy greenish-white or pink sacs that burst when bitten, they have a perfumey flavour reminiscent of lemon, lime and a hint of fresh herbs. Usually eaten fresh, finger limes also can be made into marmalade.

Mangosteen Although similar in name, mangosteen is not related to the mango. Its white, juicy, segmented flesh is more similar to a tangerine, with a sweet-tart flavour that melts in your mouth. Its hard, thick and tough dark rind is difficult to open but worth the effort.

Longan A smaller relative of the lychee, longans have a translucent white, soft pulp that surrounds a large black seed. When cut in half, it resembles an eyeball, earning this fruit its nickname: dragon’s eye. In China, longans are sometimes dried and added to tea for special occasions.

Dragon Fruit This grenade-shaped member of the cactus family (also called “pitaya”) has a leathery exterior ranging from yellow to bright pink with lime-green spiny tips. Flecked with tiny black seeds, its juicy flesh can be white or red and has a refreshing and light flavour. 44 THE MARKET PLACE

Rambutan Similar to lychees but not as juicy, the rambutan got its name from the Malay word for hair because its rind is covered in dark, soft bristles. It has a single seed surrounded by flesh that is grape-like in texture, with a sweet, delicate flavour.

Loquat/Nispero Native to China and widely grown in Japan, loquats are picked ripe, so they spoil quickly and bruise easily; therefore, they’re usually found fresh only in areas where they’re grown. The Spanish climate is ideal for these fruits and they are usually in abundance here in the Spring, but they have very limited shelf life so eat them up quick. Dried or canned loquats are available at many Asian markets.

Guava Several varieties of guava are available varying in size (small egg to apple), shape (round or pear-shaped), texture (rough or smooth- skinned) and colour (yellow, green, red or purpleblack, with flesh that is pale yellow to bright red), and with small edible seeds or seedless. To eat fresh, guava should be very ripe.

Horned Melon Known also as a “kiwano” or African horned cucumber, this bright yellow-orange fruit has horns that make it look like a small spacecraft. Its jellylike interior has a mild flavour that tastes like a combination of banana and cucumber.

Cherimoya Native to Peru and grown extensively here in Spain and also in California, cherimoya’s green, leathery, scaly skin is reminiscent of a globe artichoke, while its white, custardy flesh is peppered with black seeds. Cherimoya has a delicate flavour suggestive of banana and pineapple. Serve it chilled and halved for scooping.

Jackfruit A relative of the breadfruit and fig, jackfruit is the world’s largest fruit — it can weigh up to 45 kilos!. Inside, its many edible starchy seeds are encased in irregular clumps of yellow flesh that can be eaten raw, cooked, dried or pickled. Jackfruit has gained popularity as a meat replacement for vegetarian versions of foods such as tacos and pulled pork.

Passion Fruit This edible fruit from the passion flower is also known as “granadilla.” The most common variety looks like a purple egg and has a sweet-tart flavour and strong tropical scent. Since there is only a small amount of golden, jelly-like filling, passion fruits are often used as a flavouring or in Porn Star Martinis !! Exotic fruit recipe

Local animal charities TAIL (Torrox Animal International League)

C.A.S. (Costa Animal Society)

As viewed from the outside running a charity such as Tail, taking care of abandoned and maltreated dogs, seems such as easy thing to do. Obviously all can see that it’s such a worthwhile and necessary undertaking. The raw product - as it were - is all around and the objective is overwhelmingly a good thing.

PUNTA LARA CAS QUIZ

All said and done there is just one problem; unlike most enterprises particularly businesses you have no problem increasing your turnover (capacity, throughput, call it what you will) and the only restriction on your growth is cash, your capital. In no time at all your energies are devoted to raising money. Also, on an equal footing are two other time consuming endeavours of ensuring you have sufficient volunteers to man your efforts and then most time is spent doing your best to locate a loving home anywhere in Europe for the unlucky, or perhaps lucky dependant upon how you view it, dogs that arrive on your doorstep. As a charity no salaries are paid and so reliance is entirely upon the good people to whom Tail is beholden for their input. This week we have had a young lady from Germany, another from Sweden, a chap from New Zealand, another from Argentina, a young man from Hungary and another from Finland, all doing more than helping our regular volunteers at the Refuge. Throughout the year we are always delighted to greet someone new to us willing to help for however many hours they can spare, but during the summer months when many residents take their holidays we really do need you, both in the shops and in the Refuge or walking the dogs.

The Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to express our appreciation to Mark at the Punta Lara Bar and our regular quizzers for putting on another brilliant season of trivial pursuit. These quizzes have helped CAS raise much needed funds throughout the winter and spring. We will be taking a break during the dog days of summer but will resume these fun quizzes at the Punta Lara Bar in Nerja on the third Friday of each month starting in October.

CAS SHOP NEWS Fancy a horse ride while helping the Costa Animal Society (CAS)? We are now taking bookings for Andale horse riding school in the shop. With each booking CAS receives a E5 donation. The CAS shop is located next door to the Good Stuff Café in Nerja at No. 2 Calle Castilla Perez. The new premises, three times bigger than before, allow CAS to offer a large range of quality second-hand clothing, books, bric-a-brac and electrical items in good working order. Donations of like items are always welcome, sorry not furniture. CAS is also seeking volunteers to work in the shop. Please call in and talk to shop manager Karen for further information. Opening hours are from 10.00am until 2.00pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding bank holidays. The telephone number is 689 314 350. Please note: For the month of August we will be trading only from Monday to Friday 10.00am until 2.00pm. We will resume normal working hours in September.

FEATURED CAT OF THE MONTH Millie was born in September 2016 and is very sweet and uncomplicated. She gets on well with people, cats and dogs. Spayed and vaccinated - could travel anywhere, although a local home would be nice.

Are you searching for a new car?

Marketplace: Today we want you to introduce to Jürgen Haas and his new company www.autoagent.es. Hi Jürgen, how are you? Tell us something about your service. Jürgen: I’m importing quality 2nd hand cars from Germany on demand. My focus is on cars of German and British makes (but any other is possible , too), between 1-5 years old and with up to 100.000km. I also have contacts to campervan or classic car dealers. The unique thing about my service is, that I offer the complete service from start to finish! Finding the car you want, completing the purchase and managing the import procedures. That means, the customer is only involved twice in the process: in the beginning when he’s choosing the car and in the end, when he picks it up here in Frigiliana with the Spanish papers and number plates.

Marketplace: Why should people buy a nearly new second hand car from Germany? Jürgen: There are several reasons: Firstly, the nearly new 2nd hand car market is much bigger than here in Spain – this gives you the opportunity to choose nearly any colour or specification. Secondly, the cars are, like in the UK, much better looked after. All my cars have a gapless service history and are nonsmokers cars and the mileage is guaranteed. Thirdly, the cars are in much better condition, e.g. the paint or the headlights because of less sun, or the whole chassis, because of the better roads – I’m sure, 99% of the SUVs in Germany have never seen a campo track! Marketplace: What about the payment? Jürgen: The payment has to be made in advance to my bank account, after signing the buying and service contract. If you are paying from, for example, the UK, you can use our partner Currencies Direct and pay through them into my bank account. I don’t take cash. I keep the customer up to date about the status by email and they can call me any time. Whoever wants may have a copy of my passport as well. I have nothing to hide and I don’t want to rip anybody off. To those who only trust big companies: remember what happened in 2008!

Marketplace: That sounds good. How do you make sure that you only sell good cars? Jürgen: First of all, I only buy from serious dealers in Germany and, secondly, before the purchase, the car is checked by an independent engineer using an 80 point checklist and also looking at model specific issues. Thereby, I can make sure that the car is in perfect condition. Just last month I refused to buy a car because of too many issues after it was checked by the engineer. That’s Marketplace: What should people do when they are interested in in my interest as well, because I give at least a 1 year warranty on every car. Furthermore, in the whole ‘supply chain’ I only work with professionals: the car purchasing a car from you? dealers, the engineers, the transport company and the gestoria. AGATHA

AROA

HAPPY TALES At the end of May the Costa Animal Society (CAS) worked in conjunction with TAIL in Torrox and Valle Verde in La Herradura to resolve an urgent situation of ten Lab cross pups that were born to a Labrador in Frigiliana. The owner of the mother was facing eviction for having 12 dogs in his garden and the pups needed new homes by a deadline of June 01, 2017. The three charities advertised the pups far and wide with five going to the Netherlands, two to Germany and one to Norway. Two others were rehomed in Spain all within several weeks time, an amazing feat considering it can take months to find new places for a single waif. Aroa, Agatha and Adam were three out of six strays who were rescued by the APA charity from the Nerja pound back in January. APA was a bit over-stretched at the time so CAS agreed to take on these Bodegueros. After several months in kennels Aroa was adopted by a lovely lady from Norway who flew all the way to Malaga to collect her on June 01. Adam was seen on the CAS website by a very nice family in England who had adopted a similar female from CAS the year before. The family fell in love with Adam immediately and arranged for him to be transported to the Bolton area on June 13. Adam is now enjoying a wonderful life with his new sister in the UK. Agatha has also been chosen by a Nordic family thanks to our sister charity in Norway. She is currently being prepared for her flight to Scandinavia and should be in her new home by the end of July.

READY FOR ADOPTION

the girl brought the pup home her mother couldn’t cope with another pet to look after as they already had two dogs and a cat. Marilyn is now being housed in kennels until a more permanent home can be found.

PART-TIME PETS Many people would like the company of a pet cat or dog, but are reluctant to make a long term commitment. What happens if I have to return to my home country? What do I do with the animal during my holidays? The Costa Animal Society (CAS) has the answer: a part-time pet! Why not consider fostering a cat or a dog until a permanent home can be found for it? Fostering can be a rewarding experience with the main responsibility being to care for an animal as if it were your own. CAS relies heavily on a network of volunteers to foster animals. They keep CAS regularly updated with information on the animal which CAS displays on its website (casnerja.org) and forwards to other charities throughout Europe. Animals can be from a few days to several years old, and can be fostered for anything from a few days up to months. The fosterer feeds, walks and generally includes the animal in all family activities. Some fosterers already have pets, which is not a prerequisite but it does help the animal to socialize. However, some fosterers only have foster animals, giving them the freedom to have a part-time pet when it suits them, rather than the permanent long-term responsibility of ownership. Occasionally, the fosterer wants to keep the animal, which is possible provided that the animal has not already been reserved by another adopter and that CAS is notified immediately. CAS will try to remove animals from foster homes if the fosterer is experiencing difficulty. Finding another foster home is done as quickly as possible but can’t always be achieved the same day. If the foster pet becomes ill or is in need of medication, CAS will pay for vet bills, but once an animal is adopted, the new owner becomes responsible for all expenses. Some animals are rehomed locally and potential new owners may ask to come and meet the animal. This can be done at the foster home or arrangements can be made to meet at another location. All manner of people can foster, from those living in the countryside to people in towns and villages, apartments and villas. The only requirement is that the animal is well cared for: fed, watered and activated, kept warm when it’s cool and cool when it’s warm. If you are interested in becoming a CAS fosterer, please contact Vera on 95 252 9670 for a no-obligation chat.

Their two brothers and one sister found homes fairly quickly but these lovely pups are still looking for their forever homes. Torre del Mar

is just 30 minutes from Malaga, and is the beach resort of Velez Málaga. Its population of 21,000 grows between June and September to 150,000. The towns attractions have expanded over the last few years to cope with the demand, and now the four kilometres of beach have been enhanced by an impressive promenade, which stretches all the way to Caleta de Vélez, a port providing over 200 berths and offering sailing and water sports. Throughout the summer, there are many Chiringuitos on the beach, serving fresh barbequed fish and ice cold beers. In 2002, Paseo de Larios was pedestrianized, and is now a tranquil promenade, with plenty of pavement cafés and restaurants. At the seafront end of Larios is a line of bars and discos which continue throughout the night on Fridays and Saturdays. The history of Torre is uncertain, but it is thought that it might have been part of an ancient Greek settlement, known as Mainake, which was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Tombs of the Carthaginians were found at the mouth of the river Velez. More recently, it was a small fishing village until major development began in the 1970’s.

La Herradura

nestles between the Punta de la Mona to the east and the rock of Cerro Gordo to the west. The bay enjoys shelter from west winds creating mostly crystal-clear waters, and is a popular location for water sports & paragliding. There are numerous beach bars and restaurants serving specialities of the region, including tropical salads, fresh fish or paella. The Marina del Este near La Herradura is tucked betwen Punta de la Mona to the west and Cotobro to the east. It boasts a beautiful port, elegantly designed to incorporate select shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants. This small strip of coast also claims to be the best place to dive between Almeria and Gibraltar, and is home to one of the areas leading diving schools.

Lake Viñuela

is a 15 minute drive from the N340 Autovia, leaving at the junction for Velez Malaga. Head inland along the A356; this direction also leads to numerous inland white villages. The first turning on our map is to Benamocarra, which is sign posted to the right after the last roundabout into Velez Malaga. This road will take you back over the main road and then also on to Iznate, and divides to take you to Almachar, El Borge and Cutar. The second turning off the A356 is on the right (after the Repsol garage) to Trapiche. Continue on the A356, and immediately you will see another junction on the left, sign posted to Benamargosa, Triana, Comares and Cutar. This road will also take you as far as Rio Gordo (for a scenic drive). There is a popular Spanish bar on the corner of this junction called El Cruz. Back on the A356, continue on and you will pass another junction on the right, to Canillas de Aceituno, and finally you will see Lake Vinuela in front of you. Turn right before the lake for Puente de Don Manuel, Alcaucin, Viñuela and Periana; carry straight on for Los Romanes, Rio Gordo and Colmenar.

Frigiliana

encompass 39.74 sq km within which live just over 3,000 people year round. Frigiliana is a popular tourist destination, and because there are many holiday homes here, the population triples during the summer months. The history of Frigiliana dates from prehistoric times. The village has been inhabited by numerous civilisations from the Phoenicians and Romans to the Arabs, who had the greatest impact on the town’s development. During the Christian reconquest, Frigiliana was the site of numerous battles culminating in the famous battle of the Rock of Frigiliana in 1569 which ended in the complete expulsion of the Moorish people. One can learn the history of this struggle by walking through the streets of the historic section where there are a series of twelve ceramic plaques posted about which explain the entire story.
